A great morning out for the kids (and peace of mind for mum knowing it is a fully enclosed park!) Cnr Gilroy & Eastern Road, Turramurra. Michelle

your letters TIPS FOR THE FAMILY As a former long term Pymble girl, I like to keep up with life and news on the North Shore. Now I enjoy bringing my family to visit local events and businesses, thanks to your insights to the area and recommendations, which as a busy mum of two, I don’t have time to research for myself! Thanks for the great work - keep it up. Thanks. Sarah McDonald

NEIGHBOURHOOD HAPPENINGS Having lived on the North Shore my whole life, I love seeing what's new, and what's happening in my neighbourhood. I love knowing and recognising all the business' that advertise in the magazine, particularly the restaurants so I can choose where to dine next! The size is great, the content amazing, you manage to appeal to all ages with articles for everyone. I love it! Karen Pirrie

LOCAL INFORMATION People who live in Upper Northshore like ourselves need good local information, which is succint, practical and easy to understand. LIVING LOCAL gives the answers with great updates about what's going on around the area and this is what we really need. This booklet provides a lot of information about our Northshore social activities, life style, education/advices, offers/services and many other things, which are very useful. Although I've lived in this area for more than 10 years, I find that I still learn many new things from this booklet which I do not know or never heard before, and this is what I really like from the LIVING LOCAL! Finally, I like this small size of booklet as I can easily carry it everywhere. Thomas Korompis

STAY HEALTHY THIS CHRISTMAS PERIOD! Christmas is around the corner. Here are a few tips on how to stay balanced, healthy and lively: • Eat when you’re hungry. • Alternate between one alcoholic beverage and a glass of water to stay hydrated. Ample hydration will prevent joint and muscle pain, fatigue and suppresses hunger. • Choose fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meats and fish, which are rich in anti-oxidants and amino acids for healthy muscle development and energy. • Stay active most days. Exercise helps relieve stress, keep off the

kilos and prevent injury. • Fit in time for relaxation. Limiting stress results in a healthier immune system. • Make sure that you have at least 6-8 hours of sleep per night. Adequate sleep is important for immunity, mood and metabolism. • See a health professional for any niggles you may have rather than nagging your loved ones. • Fit in time to do things that make you happy.

THE SALON FOR HAIR'S 10 YEAR BIRTHDAY Di Newbrun established The Salon for Hair, Turramurra, in 2003 and is celebrating 10 years of service to the local community. The Salon has a Balinese theme and relaxed atmosphere that clients love. “We are a city salon in the suburbs and, given people are time-poor, we always strive to be on time with little fuss,” says Di. While Di is not a hairdresser herself, she loves to give good service to her clients and she employs the best senior stylists who are all well-trained and upto-date with fashion. Di explains, “The main aim of our salon is to give our clients’ haircuts they can replicate at home, to complement our exceptional colour work.” To celebrate their 10th birthday, The Salon established a rewards program where clients will receive ongoing benefits. Di extends her thanks to everyone who has supported them. “We value you and wouldn’t be here without you,” she says. See page 23

THE WAHROONGA RESERVOIRS (ROBERT C. JOHNSTON)

our water reservoirs

HISTORY HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

BY ROBERT C. JOHNSTON, WRITER AND RESEARCHER

The North Shore is blessed with an abundance of history that sometimes we may not notice, simply because it has always been there. Since I was a young lad going on family holidays, I have wondered about the strange little octagonal building on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Telegraph Road. I knew that it was to do with our water supply but it was only recently that I looked closely at the reservoir to which it belonged. This led to an exploration which revealed interesting histories not only of this one but of the other

unique reservoirs that line the Pacific Highway. The Wahroonga Reservoirs near Woonona Avenue have provided water for many generations of North Shore residents. The large round riveted steel tank, built in 1898, has a capacity of 4.4 megalitres. The smaller riveted steel tank, distinctively elevated on its girder frame, was built in 1915 with a capacity of 1.1 megalitres.

THE WAHROONGA RESERVOIR BEING FILLED IN 1937 (W.B., IN THE RAILWAY CAME TO KU-RING-GAI) 10

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2013

Railway and bridges saw a rapid increase in the area’s development and the large 44 megalitre reservoir opposite was completed in 1937. This concrete reservoir’s construction is significant in that it was finished with an elegant brick facade and surrounded by trees to help make the structure more aesthetically pleasing. The divider (below left) allows half the reservoir to be drained for maintenance, without disrupting supply. The 1898 and 1937, reservoirs were originally open to the air but the risk of birds and airborne pollution led to them being covered during the late 1960s-mid 1970s.

Were you involved? Let us know. The Pymble Reservoir on the corner of Telegraph Road was completed in 1917. Pymble Bowling Club leased the grassed top from 1947 till club facilities were removed in 2002 because of the age of the heritage-listed reservoir’s concrete roof.

The Killara Reservoir on the corner of jacaranda-lined Lorne Avenue lies beneath Regimental Park, named for the local army unit now known as 2nd/17th Battalion, Royal NSW Regiment.

KILLARA RESERVOIR READY FOR FILLING IN 1931 (W.B., IN THE RAILWAY CAME TO KU-RING-GAI), & VIEWED FROM HIGHWAY

The reservoir was completed in 1931 and has a capacity of 166 megalitres. An expansive sports area with croquet courts, cricket pitch, tennis courts and soccer field sits on the reservoir’s grassed roof. Its elevation provides an interesting vista across the surrounds. Keep an eye out for these impressive water reservoirs next time you are driving along the Pacific Highway. We continue to be the beneficiaries of a legacy left by strong-willed people who not only sought to meet the needs of their time but who prepared our community for a bright and prosperous future. TOP APP REVIEWS BY BRANDON COWAN, APP DEVELOPER - CRAZY DOG APPS

VIEW BRANDON'S

INTERVIEW ON P.18!

365CUPS Are you tired of waiting for your coffee or food at restaurants after ordering? I definitely am and so too was the creator of 365Cups. 365Cups lets you pre-order your tea, coffee or any other food from a coffee shop or restaurant near you! From the app, you simply submit your custom order, it tells you how much it will cost and you just pick up your food from the place where you ordered it. It’s as simple as that! 365Cups even conveniently finds your location (you need to give permission first, for all you people who have privacy concerns and whatnot) and displays the coffee shops closest to you. If your local coffee shop is not on 365Cups yet, you can use the Suggest Venue feature to recommend them. Likewise, if you own a coffee shop, you can contact the 365Cups team using the same feature. 365Cups is available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android.

THE FUN FORMULA They say you can’t put a price on happiness... The Fun Formula is the path between your current level of happiness and how happy you can potentially be. What is this path made of, you ask? Well to start with, it has 50 fun tips that aim to increase the amount of fun you have at home, work, in your relationship and other aspects of your life.

12

The Fun Formula has a cool random fun fact generator and the app lets you save your favourite fun tips in an appropriately named Favourites section of the app. It also has a special Fun Formula 15 Minute Timer to help you do the things you want to do but usually don’t have time for. The Fun Formula is available on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad for $2.99.

KFC SNACK! IN THE FACE Ok, I’ll be honest. It did sort of take me more than 30 minutes to write a review for this app because I got so addicted to it. KFC Snack! In The Face is basically a KFC-branded Angry Birds where you can get KFC vouchers and win free stuff. Sounds fun, I know! Brandon’s helpful hint: You don’t always get vouchers on every level. But if you download the app and play the first level, you will get one. So, after do so, you can delete the app and play the first level again for additional vouchers (the app will save your previous ones) and repeat this process. This occurs as of time of writing and if KFC release an update to the app that stops this, don’t hate me. Some of the vouchers you can win include: • Buy one snack box, get one free (yes, I did put my favourite first) • $1 Krusher with every snack purchase • Buy three wicked wings, get one free • $1 375ml drink with every snack purchase KFC Snack! In The Face is available for free on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android.

CHRISTMAS joy to the world! BY ANDREW REES, RECTOR AT ST ANDREW’S WAHROONGA

Christmas is almost upon us. Let’s be honest, it is hard to miss (although some of us may wish we could!), but I can’t wait! Here at St Andrew’s we are looking forward to celebrating the joy of Christmas this year. Joy! That’s the word which best captures Christmas. Joy - exuberance coming from a

SOCIALPages money that an app will make. Most apps will generally take 5-14 weeks to create though. 3. Do you have any advice for people who want to create their own app?

CRAZY DOG APPS BY EDWINA HUNTER Fans of the ever-entertaining Beauty and the Geek will know, local entrepreneur, Brandon Cowan. Living Local Magazine is fortunate to have Brandon as our app writer (see page 9) so it has been great to watch him succeed but Brandon’s key success is due to his passion and expertise in creating apps. At just 16 years of age, he cofounded Crazy Dog Apps. "At the time, I wasn’t passionate about creating apps, I was passionate about creating new things from my ideas", he said. Achieving multiple awards and now, at only 19 years of age, his innovative apps and unique approach has seen Crazy Dog Apps featured on many popular media outlets.

BEAUTY AND THE GEEK INTERVIEW ONLINE!

didn’t go ahead with that absolutely ridiculous quote (I wouldn’t charge my clients anywhere near that much). I got in touch with Hilton Rosenfeld, a really smart family friend who had been in IT for over 30 years and shared my app ideas with him and shared my vision. He liked what he saw and together, we co-founded Crazy Dog Apps. 2. How long does it take to create a successful app? How long is a piece of string and what defines ‘success’ in an app? I recently created an app for the Taronga Conservation Society in less than three weeks (it is not yet released) as part of Vodafone AppAid 2013 and can imagine it will be very successful in that it will help solve the issue of the illegal wildlife trade. If it saves the life of even one animal, I would consider that to be a successful app but I’m sure it will save many, many more.

Assuming the person who wants to get an app made has never made one before, the developer of it should be a lot more than just 'a developer'. They should be experts in user experience design (layout of the app), interface/ graphics design, App Store optimisation and right down to offering suggestions about the monetisation of the app and which features the app should and shouldn’t have. There is a lot more to app development compared to what it appears the majority of the general public think. 4. Successful business, television star, what is next?

SUMMERTIME TRACKS BY EDWINA HUNTER Local girl, Demi Bryant, who along with Rochelle, make up the duo Dem Foxes. Demi wants to see more girls spinning amazing stuff and giving the DJ-scene a go. Demi shares about working with Backstage Clothing, her favourite tracks, fashion picks and upcoming events. 1. Can you tell us about your work representing Backstage Clothing: being part of The Artists Backstage Project?

is super-comfortable and you'll always be looking fabulous!

The Artists Backstage Project brings together a range of amazing artists to put on a range of fantastic events - sharing the love between musicians, artists, photographers, DJs plus so many more. I'm really excited to be involved with the project as part of Dem Foxes (the DJ duo I am a part of). It's awesome seeing all of these extremely talented people come together to create something magical.

From the latest RI-VIE-RA range I love the Dana short, a black short with ivory on the edges. The Clarice dress in all colours, one of my favourites is the colour scheme which goes from a pink into a bright orange. Last, but not least, the striped Venice top with the Riviera mini skirt to match, these black and white babies are your perfect summer crop and skirt combo.

2. What do you admire most about Backstage Clothing’s style? I love that the clothes are so easy to wear, Backstage really do have a cool style. You can go from day to night in a flash, everything 20

3. Favourite Backstage items for summer?

4. Where will you and Backstage Clothing perform in summer? Coming up on 18th December, Backstage is planning LOVELACE X BACKSTAGE launch with some fabulous artists at The Oxford Art Factory. Simon Lovelace will

be having an art installation, Jack Mannix will be doing a live photo shoot and in January, The Artists Backstage Project will have an exhibition at Blank Space Art Gallery. Also, there is going to be a special event in January during the exhibition to welcome two international models from Sweden that will be visiting as part of The Artists Backstage Project and Dem Foxes will de DJ'ing at their welcome party. It's going to be a really cool night so stay tuned for this event and come and dance the night away with Dem Foxes. 5. Secrets to confidence on stage? Just have fun! Admitingly, before I get up on stage to DJ I do get a bit nervous but once I'm up there jumping around, having a ball, the nerves just disappear. The advice I'd give to people is just get up there, do it and have fun. 6. Top upcoming summer tracks? There are so many to choose from it's crazy! We are loving Disclosure, When a Fire Starts to Burn. We also love Take Me by Rufus and anything from Flight Facilities two awesomely talented home - grown Aussie artists. 7. Have you got some summer mixes releasing soon? Where can we hear them? We actually just finished a Dem Foxes Summer Vibes mix not too long ago. You can jump onto our Soundcloud to listen to our mixes there - with more mixes coming soon! www.soundcloud.com/ dem-foxes www.backstagepresents.com www.livinglocalguide.com.au

PM'S WIFE & LOCAL COMMUNITY CHAMPION LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE TALKS WITH MARGIE ABBOTT IN ST IVES

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW + PHOTOS ONLINE!

We met up with passionate local community leader and Prime Minister's wife, Margie Abbott, before she went to a lunch at the Manly Women’s Shelter where she is patron. Margie shares about her personal and family life, passion for her work, living in the local area and of course, about being married to the Prime Minister. Margie was born in New Zealand. Her desire to connect with people started early as Margie claims she made a "modest attempt" to learn the Maori language in the hope it would help break down barriers and build bridges. In 1983, Margie left New Zealand to work in the marketing department of a merchant bank in Sydney, where she met Tony Abbott, an Oxford educated, rugby playing, Rhodes Scholar and journalist with The Bulletin. He proposed marriage after taking her on the Kokoda Track and they married at Riverview Chapel in September 1988. They have three daughters, Louise, Bridget and Frances. 30

PERSONAL 1. There is quite a contrast in the role you have as director of an occasional care centre in Ku-ring-gai and being married to the Prime Minister. How do you balance this?

I just try to approach it by living in the moment.

My life hasn’t suddenly changed into something glamorous and exciting. We are a very ordinary Australian family who have found ourselves in an extraordinary situation and this is something I think it’s a state of mind. For that Tony and I have been very me, my work is my joy and my passion and being married to the keen to protect. We still try to Prime Minister is a recent change have family dinners and exercise together. It’s about how you in my life. My approach is always to attempt to take it in my stride: approach the job and those relishing the moment. So, whether things are just too important to I am in the sandpit, at the painting let go. When I first came to Australia . . . I would catch the ferry… and I would think, "Oh, that’s where the Prime Minister of Australia lives". Then I find myself in this situation and pinch myself. Life is strange. washing, walk the dog and do my own shopping. We want to keep doing these things because you can’t relate to the average person in the street if you are living in some surreal political bubble. You shouldn’t just disappear from your real life. People feel secure if they see you doing the things that you’ve always done - it adds value. We’re all just trying to do our best for our families or for the country on a bigger scale. Up until the 2010 election, most families at the centre where I work, had no idea who I was married to. It just doesn’t enter into it and it was only after that election, when there was the odd photo of me, that they would say, "Oh my goodness, we didn’t realise!" to which I would reply, "Well why would you?" Even now, I never talk politics [at the centre], I never talk about who I’ve met or what we might have done because when I’m at the centre, it’s the little people that are the priority. 32

2. In 1983, when you first arrived in Sydney, did you ever imagine being where you are now? No, never! In fact, that moment when I was standing at Kirribilli House with Prince Harry, my husband and our daughters, looking out over the most magnificent view over Sydney Harbour, I recalled when I first came to Australia and I was living in Manly. I would catch the ferry across to work in the city and I would look at Kirribilli House and Admiralty House and I would think, "Oh, that’s where the Prime Minister of Australia lives". Then I find myself in this situation and pinch myself. Life is strange. 3. How have you maintained a private personal life despite Tony’s long political career? It is something that we have both worked very hard at. Tony has been in politics for almost 20 years and we made the decision early on that we would have independent lives so I could work or, in fact, I could do whatever

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2013

I chose, whether that would be me being at home (which I was very happy to do for a period of time) or going back to work. The weekends were always our family time and we tried to keep our public and our private life very separate, and it has worked to date. Of course, when he became Opposition Leader it changed because he was seen as the alternate Prime Minister and by extension, the family also needed to step up so to speak. We were lucky in that our girls were older and they could make the decision for themselves as to whether they wanted to be involved in campaigning or to attend functions with Tony and me. They love their father, they are very proud of their father, so for them that was just a natural extension of us as a family. I also think it’s very important for us as a family to see Tony in that role. He walks in our door and he is just Dad or Tony. COVERStory and grandparents - that’s their whole world. Their first few steps away from that and that ability to realise that they can have friendships other than with the family, are important lessons for a young person. Society in general has tended to undervalue the importance of education in the early years and although I am a trained teacher, for me it’s just about the passion and something I have committed many years to. Now I find myself in a situation where I can talk about these things and draw attention to these things, not as a person with letters after my name but as a person who works in early childhood; I am very happy to do that.

do that. Equally, it’s important for us to see the work that he does. I think that by becoming involved, especially in recent times, the children get to see that side of him and as I say, they are very proud of him. But it’s the devil and the deep blue sea in terms of merging the public and the private, and despite the situation we are in now, and the blurring of lines, I think we will still (to a certain extent) be able to do that.

EARLY LEARNING EDUCATION 4. As a parent whose daughters attended the centre, then being director for the past five years, can you tell us why early education is so important? 34

Research has shown that the first five years of a child’s life are key times for brain development. The experiences, the love, the security, the relationships that a child has in the first five years are vital and the nature and the tone of these early experiences are the things that will hopefully set the foundation for good social relationships and brain development and confidence to go out into the big wide world and be able to say, "I can do this". I think equally, it’s a time for little people to see themselves other than just extensions of their parents. For the first few years they see themselves as very close to mum and dad

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2013

Equally, the people who work in early childhood have often been undervalued. As a society, and this is not just a political comment, we need to value our early childhood educators because they are doing a job in partnership with families, which I think is very important. 5. How difficult is it, as a carer, to speak to parents about any concerns you have with their child for example speech delays or hearing difficulty? These children are the whole world of the parent and as a carer, it’s all about the relationship you have with that parent and this is what I talk to my staff about. My guiding principle is that we have to treat every child as if they are our own and if it was my own child, as a parent, I would want www.livinglocalguide.com.au

COVERStory to be told [about any concerns] - we owe it to the families who have children in our care. They are always our priority, even if it turns out that it’s okay in the end, I would still want someone to tell me. It may just require speech pathology or be a behavioural issue, which can be very easily managed; but as a parent, yes, I’d want to know about that. Of course, once we have spoken to the parents, that’s not the end of the story but ultimately it’s a journey and we can support them along the way. 6. The Centre just celebrated its 37th birthday, which is a big achievement for any organisation. Can you tell us a bit about the celebrations? This is a community based not-for-profit Centre. In the early 1970’s a group of parents got together and thought, we don’t have a service that we can leave our children in for a period of time, so these parents formed a management committee. These were just local mums and dads. There’s a bit of a funny story. We have a sign that originally said 1973 so I had earmarked this year as our 40th anniversary but when going back through council documents we noticed [the centre] was only registered in 1976 so we decided to go ahead with the 37th birthday theme. So, it really is a celebration of community - we are not affiliated to anyone else - we are run by parents of the local community, for the parents. Although it’s

FAMILY 7. Do you have any house rules, for example with phones and emails, considering that you and Tony are in such demand? Tony has been magnificent. For 20 years, when he walks in the door the phone is switched off. Mind you, in recent times he has a tendency to check his phone but that is totally understandable and I will give him a little leeway. Tony has honestly been fantastic. He is completely devoted to family time. So, whether it is sitting on the deck eating breakfast or when the girls were younger, coming home at nine o’clock when the girls were asleep, he’d say I’ve got to go and read a story. He is committed to doing that and long may that continue. We may not be able to, as demands are far greater - certainly a very disciplined approach is required.

half kilogram (or one) more. My mother has type 2 diabetes so I am a prime candidate and so last Christmas, Tony gave me a bike. I had decided (and this is not a political response) that 2013 was going to be my year to get fit and be well. So, in January, a group of friends (who are the wives of all Tony’s mates that he cycles with) started getting together two to three times a week. We’ve done a number of charity rides, recently for The Kids Cancer Project and Giant Steps who support children with autism. It’s just gradual for me. I’ve lost almost 20 kilograms - I feel as though I’ve lost 20 years and my doctor is also saying to me that I’m well!

9. Do you cycle with Tony?

I have cut out bread and dairy and supplemented with other things. I went to see a naturopath and I got on the bike - it has really been life changing! My message to all women, regardless of your age, is (and particularly if you have a young family) when you can, exercise and have some time for yourself - for me it’s been life changing.

We don’t get a lot of time to cycle together. I started cycling in January, I’m 56 years of age soon and my doctor said, "You have a busy job and you walk every day but it’s not enough." Each time I visited him it would be another

Yesterday, for example, I went up and down the hills around home for 40 minutes and I feel great! It also kills the need to eat so it’s a win-win situation. My mother at this age was slowing down but I think 50 is the new 40 and

I don’t see it as working out when we cycle as a group, we start with a coffee and end with a coffee and in the meantime, do a hard two hours. It’s very social as well. 10. With Christmas approaching, can you describe your family’s favourite traditions? To be with family - to put up the Christmas tree. We have neighbours over for breakfast every Christmas morning. We open the presents and we have a humble BBQ brunch for breakfast and then we are with the extended family after

LOCAL AREA 11. What do you love most about working on the Upper North Shore? It’s close to home, so I’m not having to battle traffic going to the city. The people and the families are fantastic. The people who work at the centre are locals and they are all fabulous. Part of our mission statement is that

we endeavour to reflect the hopes and values of those in the community and that’s what we strive to do. For me, that’s who I am too; so that’s a nice synergy. 12. Tell us a bit about bringing up your daughters in this area. Just prior to Tony moving into politics we moved to Fox Valley Road, Wahroonga and we used to frequent all the parks around there. We were surrounded with people like us - families commited to their communities and the places they lived in. That’s essentially what everyone wants in a community, to be around people you relate to.

KU-RING-GAI LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

December 2013

REFLECTIONS ON 10 YEARS OF COMMUNITY BANKING IN KU-RING-GAI

TURRAMURRA COMMUNITY BANK® BRANCH STAFF GRANTS

By David Langdon Chairman, Ku-ring-gai Financial Services Limited

Another very successful ‘Staff Grants’ evening was held at Turramurra Community Bank® Branch on 19 September 2013.

The celebration of the 10th Birthday of the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch has brought back memories of the community and business disruptions caused by rampant bank branch closures inflicted upon Australian townships and suburbs during 2001/02. While these memories might have dimmed somewhat, the reality was that the citizens of Ku-ring-gai experienced the disruptive effects of 13 bank branch closures during the early 2000’s. More recently, the residents of Lindfield and Turramurra have experienced further bank branch closures. The vision of the inaugural directors of Ku-ring-gai Financial Services Limited back in December 2002 comprised: n n n n n

Retain local banking services Promote and stimulate local business Local decision-making Enhance the wealth and well-being of the community Be recognised as an outstanding community partner.

A little over a decade later, Ku-ring-gai Financial Services Limited has more than 500 shareholders and operates Community Bank® branches in Turramurra and Lindfield which have more than $275 million of banking business on their books and which provide superior banking services to more than 4,000 local customers. Furthermore, the company has returned more than $1.25 million to the local community in the form of community contributions and shareholder dividends during this period.

The Staff Grants are a relatively new initiative at our branches where each staff member nominates a local community group to receive a small grant to be invested in a community project. The grants presentations are always very enjoyable as it is always fabulous to hear the uplifting stories from all the different recipients on the wonderful work they are doing in the community. Cheques were presented at the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch to seven recipients on the night: Warrawee Croquet Club, Turramurra High School Band, Warrawee Public School Library, Turramurra Rotary, Kissing Point Netball Club, Prostate Cancer Support Group (Jacaranda Lodge at the Sydney Adventist Hopsital), Walk Talk Fly Charity (on behalf of Jackson Keleher who has cerebral palsy). “Giving back to the community is an integral part of our Community Bank® branch’s philosophy. Both our Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank® Branches will continue to hold two ‘Staff Grants’ events per year” said David Langdon, Chairman, Ku-ring-gai Financial Services Limited.

I trust that there will be many more exciting activities and achievements throughout the next 10 years. In the meantime, our directors and staff remain confident that our ability to support our local communities will continue to grow and further enhance the quality of life in Ku-ring-gai. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

COMMUNITYNews GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUNDS By Denice Kelly, Senior Branch Manager

At the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch, we like to empower women with wealth knowledge to help them plan for their financial security. Sadly, for a lot of women, taking control and planning for their financial future is just not on their agenda. Too many women still rely on their husband or partner to look after such matters. Our branch would like to help change that situation and give women the information that they need to look after their financial future themselves. We recently hosted a seminar aptly named, ‘Girls Just Want to Have Funds’, at Avondale Golf Club. Gina Greenaway, our Financial Planner, covered topics that included superannuation and insuring your financial future. However, this seminar was not just about finances, the evening was also a fun fund raiser for the Cancer Council. The ‘Girls Night In’ initiative is all about bringing women together to celebrate and raise money to help the Cancer Council fight against breast and gynaecological cancers. Most people, including the Avondale Golf Club staff, wore something pink and over $500 was raised to support women’s health. Approximately 40 women attended on the night and most of the ladies were keen to do it all again next year. If you would like to speak to Denice Kelly about how you can plan for your financial security or about any of your banking requirements, please give her a call on 0428 437 761. 38

TURRAMURRA COMMUNITY FORUM The inaugural ‘Turramurra Community Forum’ was held on the 13th November at the Turramurra Masonic Hall. There was a fantastic turn-out with over 80 people from over 40 business and community groups meeting to present and discuss their ideas for projects and initiatives to improve the Turramurra community. Everyone was split into groups and they were invited to propose their ideas for projects that would benefit the Turramurra area and then there was a vote for the top priorities. A range of ideas were presented covering everything from having a community hub where people could congregrate, to bringing back the Post Office or using the building for the community’s benefit, to rejuvenating Rohini Street, to cycle ways to projects to support the disabled and elderly, just to name a few! The Turramurra Community Bank® Branch hosted the evening and will facilitate the next step which is determining which ideas were the most popular and organising committee/s to help implement the ideas.

KIPLING’S GARAGE BAR Kipling’s Garage Bar opened in August 2013 and is a unique venue that has been created by converting the shell of a 1950s garage into an industrial chic space. Whether you would like a drink or tapas, Kipling’s offers an intimate and friendly atmosphere to catch up or wind down. You can also enjoy live music or even take part in a cooking class on the premises. Owners Helen and Chris Thompson have been banking with the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch since they first came up with the idea for their business mid-way through 2012. The reason they chose the branch was that they liked the idea of supporting the local community. The more people that bank with the Community Bank®, the more money there is to invest back into the local community in the form of donations, grants and sponsorships. “The Turramurra Community Bank® Branch is a short walk away and I’m in there every day. The girls in the branch are so happy and helpful and can always answer my questions. I also appreciate how involved they are in the local community”, said Helen. Kipling’s Garage Bar is centrally located by the Turramurra bus and train interchange at the bottom of Rohini Street at 2 Eastern Road, Turramurra. Ph: 9440 4088. COMMUNITYNews SUPPORTING THE LINDFIELD COMMUNITY By Warren Dwyer, Branch Manager, Lindfield Community Bank® Branch

The Lindfield and Turramurra Community Bank® Branches believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank – in that order. While we are working to provide banking products and services for our customers, we also like to think about the bigger picture and the ways that we can help to strengthen our local community. Here in Lindfield, we’ve created a number of unique partnerships and services which enable us to do this including partnerships with: Lindfield East Public School, Cromehurst School Lindfield, Beaumont Road Public School, Newington Prepartory College, Holy Family School Lindfield, Jewish Arts, Lindfield Rugby Club, Roseville Bowling Club, Killara Bowling Club, Lindfield Bowling Club, Roseville Kids Care, Wildthings and Rotary Club of Lindfield. First and foremost, banking is our business, but it’s the time and effort that we as a team spend innovating in the community that makes us unique and sets us apart. It’s also why so many people choose to bank with us. As more and more people within the community support us, the more we are able to give back to our local community in the form of donations, grants and sponsorships. Why not come in and see me and my team here at Lindfield and discover the range of very competitive products we have, experience the personalised service that we are renowned for and experience banking the way it should be.

CAFÉ CIAO DOWN Café Ciao Down, located on the Pacific Highway at Lindfield, has been open for business for 12 years but was bought by new owner, Dan Kuzmiuk in July this year. Dan has also been a Lindfield Community Bank® Branch customer since July. When he decided to purchase the business, he went to a number of banks but the Lindfield Community Bank® Branch was the only one that helped him through the process by breaking down for him exactly what he would need from them, how much it was going to cost him and how many payments. He said that the friendly service that he received from the staff was also a “huge deal” and a major consideration in choosing the Lindfield Community Bank® Branch as his bank. Friendly service is also something that Dan’s customers at Café Ciao Down receive. Along with delicious Aroma coffee, a variety of fresh pastas, salads and sandwiches, there is a terrific atmosphere courtesy of its large communal table positioned in the centre of the shop. Café Ciao Down - 358-360 Pacific Highway, Lindfield. Phone: 9416 8366. Open from 6.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 2.00pm on Saturday & 7.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday.

If you would like to speak with Warren Dwyer about any of your banking requirements, please give him a call on 0434 730 976.

How banking with our Community Bank® Branches can make a difference 1. You choose to bank with your locally-owned Turramurra or Lindfield Community Bank® Branch. 2. You select from a competitive range of banking products and services. 3. The local Ku-ring-gai community shares in the income generated by your banking. The more you bank with us, the more the community benefits in the form of grants, sponsorships and dividends. 4. The Ku-ring-gai community, not Bendigo Bank, chooses which community projects receive support. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

STOP PRESS! Mrs Morgan’s Melting Moments

Customer 10th Anniversary Celebration

Mrs Morgan is one of the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch staff’s favourite customers. She is an original shareholder in the bank and she also mentioned that she was the one that suggested that the old men’s wear shop on the highway would be a good spot for the bank - which is where it is still located today.

Approximately 100 people attended a Cocktail Party to celebrate 10 years of Community Banking in Ku-ring-gai. It was held at Avondale Golf Club, Pymble on the 21st October. Guests included Paul Fletcher MP, Jennifer Anderson, the Mayor of Ku-ring-gai and Alex Hughes, Regional Manager, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank as well as a number of loyal customers, shareholders, directors and staff.

Once a fortnight or so, she visits the branch and takes with her some of her delicious baked treats. Her Melting Moments are legendary but she also makes a delicious date and ginger slice, shortbread and almond biscuits. All the girls at the Turramurra branch appreciate and value the wonderful friendship that they have with this very special customer.

Mrs Morgan’s Melting Moments 8oz butter, 2oz caster sugar 6oz self-raising flour, 2oz cornflour, pinch of salt, ½ tsp vanilla. Cream the butter and sugar. Add flours, salt and vanilla. Bake for about 20 minutes in preheated oven at 160˚C degrees. To make the filling cream some butter, then add icing sugar gradually. Then add either vanilla and a bit of water to the mixture, ensuring it is not too thick. Alternatively, add some black coffee (instead of the vanilla and water) for a change. BY KRYSTYNA ZAWADZKA, SOMATHERAPY, GORDON (ALSO SEE PAGE 46-47) Shoulders are vulnerable to injury from both acute trauma (fall, MVA) and repetitive trauma (repetitive strain) to the musculo-tendinous unit of the shoulder e.g. throwing injuries, bowling, overhead tennis serve, driving golf balls, carrying a

what patients say about SOMATHERAPY SHOULDER TREATMENT: (ALSO SEE PAGE 44)

Hi Krystyna, I am so thrilled that I am pain free and doctors now say, "No operation needed!" Thank you as I am convinced you have helped greatly. Derek Pola My comment (Krystyna): Derek came to Somatherapy Clinic in October 2012 suffering from a torn Rotator Cuff in his left shoulder three months ago. He suffered severe left shoulder pain, neck pain and referred pain down to his left wrist. The pain was interrupting his sleep. Pain and lack of sleep caused high stress, fatigue and great difficulty to work. His doctor advised him to have shoulder surgery as an only option and a few months post-operative rehabilitation. Derek was treated with Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy twice a week, for two ½ months, resulting in a
full recovery. I was referred to Krystyna for treatment of chronic pain in my left shoulder caused by an old injury. I received treatment in my shoulder improving with each visit. After the fourth treatment the pain was all but gone and I was gaining confidence again. At the same time I was having migraine episodes several times a week and I asked if there was a treatment available and to my relief, there was. Since my initial

treatment, I would be unlucky to have one headache episode in a month. Krystyna was able to offer me a clear explanation of what my migraine was and offer me a very simple yet amazingly effective treatment. I have now introduced Krystyna to the rest of my family including my teenage boys and we have found Krystyna a huge contributor to our wellbeing and sports injury management including: structural issues with quick growing teenagers, shoulder strains, hamstring complaints, torn calf muscles and associated problems with counter compensation of the body from the injuries. I have no hesitation in recommending Krystyna to those that seek a proven alternative to traditional treatments. Leo Sprague I injured my shoulder playing tennis and tore part of my rotator cuff tendons. I was considering surgery but a friend recommended that I see Krystyna. I also have an old neck injury, which gives me pain and headaches that I have learnt to live with. I didn’t realise how restricted I had been until after a few treatments by Krystyna. The most noticeable thing was that I could turn my head easily and painlessly whilst driving.

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

After my seventh treatment I sent a message saying, “...just letting you know that my neck is great! So won’t need to see you this afternoon. Thanks for fixing me! See you Fri for my shoulder”. After eight treatments on my shoulder, I have returned to hitting basic tennis shots. I have decided not to have surgery and to continue this therapy until full recovery. Occupational Therapist (name withheld) In early October I slipped and injured my shoulders. A GP. X-rays and an Ultrasound indicated a complete tear of the Supraspinatus tendon. A surgeon said there was nothing he could do, although I had already decided to reject surgery. My neighbour suggested I consult Krystyna. We are all in our 70s, so find ourselves liable to old injuries resurfacing. I felt relief from the start, and after five weeks I have almost had complete movement back and the pain has diminished. I shall definitely continue seeing Krystyna until completely healed but everyone is amazed at the speed of my recovery. I shall definitely make Krystyna my first port of call if future problems arose. Thank you Krystyna. Janne Bidenko

YOURHealth So how do we fight resistance when we want to make changes in our lives? •

Recognise that change requires sacrifice and time - concepts directly opposed to the world we live in where the microwave mentality of instant gratification is the norm.

• Be reasonable – don't pick six things to change at once - pick one thing.

NEW YEAR resistance fighters BY TINA VARTIS, FREELANCE WRITER AND COUNSELLOR

Stephen Pressfield in his book, The War of Art, made this comment, "Most of us have two lives. The life we live and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance".

What's one factor that separates the 8% who fulfil their resolutions and the 92% who don't? Resistance!

In the midst of being swept up in the festivities of Christmastime events, the curtain of 2013 is drawing to a close and we are left to reflect on how our lives were lived during the past year. Reviewing on what worked and what didn’t work in our lives during the year provides us with a window to discover missed opportunities. What happened to our New Year’s resolutions? What made them disappear into a vapour of good intentions?

Resistance, that chameleonlike factor that changes its appearance to suit the circumstances of the moment in order to delay, prevent and keep us from moving forward to a better place in our lives. Living with resistance is like being confined to the Big Brother house where your companions, instead of being people, are things like procrastination, distraction, selfdoubt, rationalisation, defeatism and fear. Instead of a life lived with meaning and purpose, life slides down along a series of safe choices and random activities tied to an anchor of resistance.

Studies show that only 8% of people fulfil their New Year's resolutions. 48

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2013

Make a plan with specific time frames to achieve your goals, rather than making vague, pie-in-the-sky statements more suited to making you feel better rather than providing you with the focus and challenge to fulfil your dream.

Monitor your progress. Ask yourself whether your daily choices line up with the changes you desire to make in your life or whether they move you away from your goals.

Resistance will always be with us and overcoming its power to keep us from moving from the life we live to the unlived life within us requires courage. Courage that realises that there is something more important than the baggage of self-defeating thoughts and emotions that Resistance brings into our lives. Waiting for the calendar to turn over to 2014 plays right into the delaying hands of resistance. Don’t let resistance claim another dream or another resolution. Fight back. Start today and make the change. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

YOURHealth include those that can be bought as a stock guard that does not require any fitting and boil and bite mouthguards that are heated in hot water before biting into the mould at home. When a mouthguard is customfitted by your dentist, it will not only improve the protection that it provides but it will also be easier to wear while playing sport due to it not coming loose and ensuring that it does not restrict breathing.

GUARD YOUR MOUTH BY DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMEDSCI, BDENT (HON) Despite the various campaigns that have been designed to promote the use of mouthguards in sport there are still a large number of adults and children that don’t wear one. According to the Australian Dental Association’s website, only 36% of children aged 5-17 wear a mouthguard during games. Why is it important to wear a mouthguard? Wearing a mouthguard can prevent a number of different types of injury by absorbing and distributing some of the force from a blow to the head. These include soft tissue injuries around the lips and impact injuries to the jaw and teeth, which can be painful and potentially disfiguring. Treating these injuries is often complex and time 50

consuming, the cost of which far outweighs the cost of having a mouthguard fitted. When should a mouthguard be worn? Mouthguards should be worn whenever there is a risk of contact to the face. Therefore, it is important to wear one during training sessions as well as during games. Sports that may lead to preventable dental injuries not only include heavy contact sports such as rugby, AFL and soccer but also hockey, basketball, netball and recreational activities such as skiing. Are all mouthguards the same? No, a custom fit mouthguard made by a dentist will be a much better fit than any overthe-counter mouthguards. Over-the-counter mouthguards

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2013

How often should I replace my mouthguard? It is important to regularly check the fit of the mouthguard, especially when children are transitioning between their primary and adult teeth and also to check for any signs of damage. This can easily be done by bringing it along to their next dental check-up for their dentist to assess. How should I care for my mouthguard? Store it in a mouthguard box or firm plastic container and rinse with water after use. Avoid leaving it in the sun and never clean it in hot water as it will distort when exposed to heat. If it needs a clean, it can be rinsed in mouthwash. Dr Laurence McCarthy is an honours graduate of the University of Sydney and works at Gordon Dental. LIFEStyle An astute financial planner is quoted as succinctly saying, "When it's both, it gets overwhelming." As with much of the world, Australia faces a rapidly ageing population. And challenging financial and emotional circumstances will no doubt occur with growing frequency.

SQUEEZED FROM both sides BY MARK LEWIN, CFP ® FINANCIAL PLANNER Many baby boomers are still providing financial help to their adult children - who are perhaps still living at home - while helping their ageing parents with their financial and other needs.

The study found:

Meanwhile, these baby boomers are typically trying to make the most of their last years in the workforce to boost their own retirement savings.

• 21% provided some financial support to their parents aged 65+

A recent study reveals that this financial squeeze between adult children and elderly parents may be surprisingly common and disturbing.

52

• 48% of middle-aged individuals last year gave some financial support to their grown children

If you find yourself caught in such a predicament you should make a clear distinction, when dealing with grown children, between expenses that are important (such as further education) and not-as-important (such as concert tickets). Furthermore, another good tip is to gain a proper understanding of an elderly parent's finances. Indeed, someone caught in a financial squeeze between adult children and elderly parents should perhaps be talking to a financial planner - including about what assistance they can afford or cannot afford to give. Many thanks to Robin Bowerman, Vanguard Australia, for the information found in this article.

BEYONDLocal increasingly operate here at the zoo and in the wild." "Recently, a Taronga vet arrived at the Jane Goodall Foundation’s Tchimpounga Rehabilitation Centre in the Congo to treat chimpanzees for the latest release into the sanctuary. Our construction manager will help manage the building of the next part of the sanctuary."

TARONGA ZOO'S newest member Early one morning, Taronga Zoo primate keepers watched on as the newest member of the Zoo’s renowned Chimpanzee group was born to mother, Kuma. Keepers had just arrived at the Chimpanzee Sanctuary to start their daily routine and observations, when Kuma delivered what keepers believe is a healthy young male. The experienced mother cradled the infant while other chimpanzees including her son, Furahi, 10 years, looked on with interest. Taronga primate keeper, Katie Hooker, said, "At 7:30 am, we were continuing to monitor Kuma‘s pregnancy in the exhibit where she was sitting on one of the climbing structures, about eight metres off the ground. She gave birth, easily reaching down to 54

bring her new baby up onto her chest. It took about four minutes." "We’ve just been keeping everything normal and low-key to support Kuma and let her settle the newcomer into the group. She’s been doing all the right things, grooming and feeding the baby."

Taronga Foundation is also is providing financial support for Tchimpounga with $150,000 over five years from 2011 as well as sending veterinarians, zoo keepers, construction specialists, electricians and volunteers to work at the sanctuary. Sadly, chimpanzees are increasingly endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, the bushmeat trade, and the illegal pet trade, which often sees young chimps abandoned or seized in poor physical and mental health.

Chimpanzees have highly structured family groups and mothering is learned. As the granddaughter of the former matriarch, Fifi, Kuma is wellplaced in the hierarchy of the group. Zoo visitors may be able to catch glimpses of the baby as Kuma has been in the Sanctuary’s exhibit since the birth.

Dr Goodall sent a message to Taronga on the opening of its Chimpanzee Sanctuary in September 2011 saying, "Taronga Zoo's chimpanzee community is well respected around the world. This new exhibit is very exciting and is filled with potential for the chimpanzees. I have come to know these chimpanzees well and I wish I was there today to see how they first react to their new home".

Taronga Director, Cameron Kerr, said, "This is great news for our chimpanzee group, and adds to our conservation efforts that

do a day trip! BY EDWINA HUNTER Just two and a half hours drive north of Sydney, along the M1 Motorway (formally F3 Freeway) you will reach Port Stephens. A haven close to home! This picturesque region, spanning 24km of white sandy beaches, forest-covered hills and coastal communities, offers an abundance of exciting activities. On a recent holiday, some of my favourite activitites included:

There are a number of amazing cycle paths including the threekilometre cycleway to Fingal Bay being the most popular, which takes riders through the Tomaree National Park bringing them out at the Fingal Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. We used Shoal Bay Bike Hire. The service was amazing!

RELAXING SWIM

HIT THE DUNES! Experience riding up and down the highest coastal sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. Sand Dune Adventures gave us a great tour, including learning about the Aboriginal food, culture and history in the area.

After an adventure-filled day, spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the crystal blue waters and relaxing on one of the many unpopulated soft sandy beaches such as Fingal Bay or Stockton.

GREAT FOOD We loved Catch at Shoal Bay and with children, Fingal Beach Surf Life Saving Club is a must!

wonderful, wonderful 5 COPENHAGEN BY DENIS AND SUE PONTIN In Copenhagen we hired bikes and took advantage of an amazing ten days of mild sunny weather to travel around and see all the wonderful sights, especially the cafes and pastry and bread shops. Our daughter is studying at the University of Copenhagen and cycles to her lectures in the heart of Copenhagen from the city outskirts. We travelled further into Denmark on the efficient, clean and remarkably cheap railway system. Here are a few of our favourite sights. Enjoy! 1. ISRAELS PLADS - Our favourite meeting place was the Israels Plads food market near Norreport station. You could purchase in-season fruit and veg, seafood, meat, cheese, tea, coffee, oil, nuts etc. Since we self catered, this was great. We also purchased delicious egg-omelette wraps with mouth-watering filling.

2. THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY - COPENHAGEN CATHEDRAL - The beautiful

fairytales are favourites with children worldwide. Our four children loved 'Thumbelina', 'The Emperor’s New Clothes', 'The Little Mermaid' and many more. This statue is found on the HC Andersen Boulevard and was a must for us to visit.

5. LEGO FLAGSHIP STORE -

cathedral that Princess Mary and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark married in 2004. This church was completed in 1829 and holds statues of Christ and his 12 apostles. Certainly worth a visit.

4. MEMORIAL STATUE OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1805 - 1985) - His stories and

We were attracted to the lifesized lego toys in this store. We must be all big kids at heart! Lego is one of the world’s best known Danish toy manufacturers. This shop has a section where the children can play and build their own models.

6. NYHAVN - Originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world docked, today the houses have been renovated and great restaurants line the canal. We had a great tasting plate of typical Danish savoury delights and a boat tour around the harbour and canals.

7. THE LITTLE MERMAID The bronze statue is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Copenhagen. Inspired by HC Anderson’s fairy tale, The Little Mermaid turned 100 years old just a month before our visit.

8. FREDERIKSBORG PALACE Built as a royal residence for King Christian IV and located on three small islands in the middle of Palace Lake. The adjoining, very large formal garden is magnificent and we spent a couple of hours walking through it enjoying its complexity and the wonderful view.

3. THE BLUE PLANET AQUARIUM -

9. THE PATISSERIE LA GLACE -

Northern Europe’s largest aquarium, surrounded by water. Standing in front of the Ocean Tank makes you feel very small with hammerhead and reef sharks, rays, moray eels and thousands of fish swimming overhead. There’s also a tank showcasing the Great Barrier Reef.

Operating since 1870 on the same site, it is an experience not to be missed. The traditional tearooms are steeped in history and the cakes and pastries are out of this world. Often a very long queue on weekends.

COMPUTER STUDIES IN THE MOUNTAINS

MONSOON TRIGGERS landslide BY RICHARD JACKSON MONSOON TRIGGERS LANDSLIDE The South Asian Monsoon was very destructive this year causing widespread loss-of-life and property damage, particularly in the Himalayas. Our key school, Bhairibi Primary School, in Ratmate, Gorkha had a narrow escape from catastrophe when the monsoon triggered a landslip immediately below the main school building. Fortunately the school escaped damage and we were able to act immediately, stabilising the site and building a stronger, concrete and masonry retaining wall.

WAHROONGA LOCAL FIGHTS THE HIMALAYAN SNOWS Wahroonga resident Craig Ley spent three nights in the remote, rarely visited Nepali Himalayan village of Manbu, Gorkha District during the January 2013 Nepal Charity Trek organised by Allan 60

Waldon of Eastern Road Quality Meats. Manbu is towards the upper limit of the habitable zone in the Himalayas and is very cold at night in winter. Manbu is home to a high school serving the surrounding villages where 42 of the students board during the week at a school hostel. A good quality school building in Nepal has a rough concrete floor, cement rendered walls, no glass in the windows and a corrugated iron roof: no ceiling, and insulation is unknown. This is bitterly cold for children trying to sleep during a winter snow storm as the freezing northern wind blasts the mountainside. Craig saw an urgent need and responded. Today a basic vinyl floorcovering makes the dorms both warmer under foot and easier to clean. Thanks to warm blankets and new sheets, the children are healthier and can

The 2012 UNSW student volunteer team raised several thousand dollars to help support the schools, following their visit last year. Their generosity and hard work has been invested in a computer studies facility at Bhairibi Primary School, comprising six desktops, two laptops, power supply and printer. The local people are very enthusiastic. Few computers are to be found in the area, as mains electricity has only been available for two years. But they have jumped straight to mobile phones, no landlines are available, and fully appreciate the vast potential of the internet for improving access to educational resources from around the world. The importance of the facility was underscored by its formal opening by the Chief District officer for Gorkha (equivalent to the State Premier) and District police chief. Students will pay a small fee approximately $1.50 per month to cover running costs and teacher salaries. The bone bucket at Eastern Road Quality Meats has been a great source of fundraising for Nepal. Thank you for your generosity. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

'race to the bottom' BY ALICE DICKMAN

Horse racing has a long and venerable tradition. Take the Melbourne Cup: since 1861, this event has been attended by scores of socialites, punters and partygoers who have revelled in its hedonistic traditions and festivities. Only the most light and nimble jockeys are successful. All horses are either three years old or over and must be bred from ‘pure’ bloodlines in order to compete at the famed carnival. Sadly, 'the sport of kings' has far 62

more losing punters than winners, with an estimated 115,000 'problem gamblers' in Australia (Healey, 2011). Underneath the glitzy façade lies a more sinister truth: horse 'wastage'. Each year, 18,000 thoroughbred foals are born into the horse racing industry in Australia. On average, 12,600 of these will be harshly and brutally discarded. Shockingly, the vast majority will be slaughtered, often in front of each other, before being made into dog meat or food for human consumption.

TOP 5 MORTGAGE TIPS BY MARK BOURIS, YELLOW BRICK ROAD EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN A lot of readers, from a recent article I wrote, wanted to know how to save money when you already have a home loan. Here are some tips: Have a plan: you should plan to own your home as fast as possible, and therefore pay as little interest as possible. Pay attention to the rate: consider a $350,000 loan over 30 years. If you had a 5.3% mortgage and refinanced at 4.94 % - maintaining the same repayments - your loan term would drop from 30 years to around 27 years and five months, saving around $60,000. Understand the loan term: shorter loan terms usually

1

mean you pay less interest and pay the debt faster. Let’s say you a have $350,000 mortgage at 4.94%, and you opt for a 25-year loan rather than a 30-year: you’d pay 19% less in interest, saving you $61,626. Shifting to a 20-year term will save you $120,199.20. Repayment frequency is key: the higher the frequency of payment, the slower the interest accrues and the faster you pay off the mortgage. If you pay half the monthly repayment amount fortnightly, rather than monthly, or a quarter of the monthly payment weekly, this means you end up paying the equivalent of an extra month’s payment

4

each year. Consider an average mortgage of around $350,000 and a 30 year term at 4.94%. You’d save around four years and eight months off your loan term and over $56,000 in interest, by paying the monthly repayment weekly or fortnightly. Put windfalls into your home loan: Tax refunds, Medicare rebates and work bonuses should go into the home loan, reducing interest and speeding repayment. When borrowers 'set and forget' their mortgage, they usually pay too much interest and have the debt longer than they should. Get focused and save yourself a lot of money.

YOURHome I'd tried a few organic hair products and hadn't found something great so I asked a friend who owned an organic hair salon what she recommended and she suggested EverEscents. Not only did EverEscents meet my expectations, the website is very comprehensive with its explanations and ingredients lists, and the packaging is also worth a mention: sleek and appealing with all the information you need. For me, it's a double thumbs up.

local loves BITE SIZE CATERING

The Organic Moroccan Argan Oil is a fabulous product, and with only a few drops of this beautiful oil-blend, it left my hair nourished, smooth and shiny. I love that this is a silicone and toxic-free product, and includes all the amazing natural properties of argan oil. The Rose Shampoo and Rose Conditioner gave me great results. Not only does it smell fantastic, I only needed a small amount of product for it to lather nicely and leave me with a clean, shiny finish to my hair. My hair styled easily, throughout the day it felt wonderful and I wasn't left with the feeling of excess product in my hair. I am also quite particular about ingredients and, I dare say, I was quite impressed - plant based formulations and organic ingredients.

Bite Size Catering was established in 2004 by chef Elke Travers (a food lover who has travelled throughout Australia and Europe) with a mission to create memorable food and flavour experiences using a “rustic to refined” approach. For high-profile corporate functions, rustic shared dining and everything in between, Bite Size Catering hand-picks local

seasonal produce for freshness and flavour, and it is the variety of these ingredients that drives head chef Elke’s boundless creativity. She and the team love to discuss with you your ideas and objectives and then combine it with 25 years of culinary experience, skills and knowledge to ensure everything comes together as you want it.

Modern, spacious, well-designed office space with the latest technology. A variety of meeting and board rooms, large open areas to relax in, comprehensive business and secretarial services, and friendly and professional support staff means you can focus more on running your business. DIABETES in our pets BY DR MARTINE PERKINS BVSC(HONS) MRCVS, MACVS, PYMBLE VETERINARY CLINIC By avoiding the risk factors, such as obesity, you can help reduce the chance of diabetes. What is Diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a deficiency in insulin production from the pancreas. Insulin is important in the utilisation of glucose in the body. Weight loss results from the body breaking down other resources to fuel the body as it cannot use its glucose stores. This is okay for a while, to cope with acute starvation, but over time ketones build up in the body and an uncomplicated case of diabetes turns into a very sick diabetic. What initial signs might your pet exhibit?

In dogs, sugars can enter the lens of the eye causing cataract formation. Because a cat's lens is different, this primarily occurs in dogs. Up to 70% of diabetic dogs develop cataracts within 12 months of their diagnosis, despite good diabetic control. Fortunately cataract removal is generally a very successful surgery. What breeds are affected? Some breeds are at increased risk. These include: the Australian terrier, schnauzers, bichon frise, poodles, samoyed, Yorkshire terrier, beagle, golden retriever, keeshond, and Burmese cats. What are other contributers? • obesity

• weight loss with an increased appetite

• infections and medications which cause insulin resistance

• increased drinking and urinating

• diseases such as pancreatitis, cushings, and hypothyroidism

pregnancy and dioestrus occasionally cause a gestational-type diabetes as seen in people.

Is diabetes curable? Dogs usually have type I diabetes. This is when there is an absolute lack of insulin production. Occasionally diabetes is transient in dogs but this is rare. In most instances we successfully manage diabetes rather than cure the dog. Cats more commonly get type II diabetes, which is when insulin production is impaired and triggers cause insulin resistance. In cats, we can often cure their diabetes by treating it well initially and resolving the causes of resistance such as obesity. Insulin therapy and dietary control are fundamental in the control of diabetes.

SUMMERTIME & CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS! BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS GARDEN CENTRE, TURRAMURRA

There’s always so much going on during summer with parties, holidays, Christmas and family barbeques. Time is what most of us don’t have on our side so here are some tips to help you and your plants get through this hot and hectic season. Plants in the garden are most susceptible to heat stress this time of year, so here are just a few things you can do to help them through the sizzling days. Apply Debco’s SaturAid to both garden beds and potted plants. The active ingredients break down the surface tension of soils and potting mixes, so water soaks deep down to the root-zone where the plant needs it most. Mulch your garden beds well with Amgrow’s Sugar Cane, Tea Tree or Pine Bark to retain precious moisture. Spray plants with Yates Waterwise DroughtShield. This ready-to-use product protects plants from heat, water loss, drying winds and sunburn. It is biodegradable and the protective film stretches up to 100% with leaf growth and lasts for up to 90 days - sunscreen for plants!

Water reservoirs in the shape of frogs and birds are an ideal way to keep your pot plants moist whilst you’re away. Simply fill their open mouths with water and place them in the soil. The water slowly seeps through the terracotta spike into the potting media, getting straight to the root system. Available in a range of colours, they look great sitting next to your plant and always raise a smile.

Wondering what to buy that, shall we say, older-than-you relative who loves their houseplants but can’t lift heavy watering cans anymore? This Christmas give them a loop handle watering can or one that incorporates a sprayer too. These are beautifully made and compliment the frog and bird water reservoirs.

Use baubles, pine cones, fruit and greenery en-masse in glass jars, vases and even in lanterns to create instant and easy decorations for your Christmas table. Tie festive ribbons around them to give that finishing touch. So simple, so quick, so effective, so you can get on with enjoying Christmas. Everyone at Elegant Outdoors would like to thank our customers for their support and friendship and we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

POOL COMPLIANCE AND COMPLIANCE CERTIFICATES - have you registered? BY KEVIN HINDER, LICENCED REAL ESTATE AGENT The NSW Government has now introduced a Swimming Pool Register Many buyers have been missing out on homes at or before auction and requires all pool owners in NSW to do a self-assessment and and as a result, we have seen register their pool online for pool compliance.

Additionally, early in 2014 it will be a requirement to have a compliance certificate if you plan on selling or leasing your property. With potential fines and the possibility of matters being referred to court, things could end up costly and stressful, so, avoid running the risk and help make your backyard safer. Simply go online to www.swimming poolregister.nsw.gov.au. If you know, or feel, that your pool or outdoor spa may not be compliant and you have considered fencing, now could be as good a time as any to have someone provide a quote to help you become compliant. Need a referral to someone who has a successful and reliable pool www.livinglocalguide.com.au

fencing business, or would you just like some friendly advice? Feel free to email Kevin at: propertyreport@rwt.com.au or call anytime on 0417 253 633.

WOW! MY HOME IS WORTH HOW MUCH? The second half of 2013 has seen an upward trend in property prices and buyer confidence.

sellers achieving sales well beyond their expectations. With interest rates continuing along at low levels and the stock market steady, many industry experts are forecasting a continued strong property market well into 2014. Now, and the first quarter 2014, should be an excellent time to capitalise on the strong market. With a good number of investors back in the market and ready to buy, including many first-time investors, now could be a good time to sell investment properties, especially units (with or without tenancy). If you have not had your property’s value appraised in the last five years you may be surprised by recent growth. For a personalised property report, email your contact number and property details to: propertyreport@rwt.com.au or call Kevin on: 0417 253 633.
