Panettone made the traditional way, using our very own sourdough started cultured from scratch. The process of creating the panettone using our sourdough starter takes a minimum of 72 hours, giving the bread its distinct flavour and fluffy texture. HISTORY HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

The North Shore is blessed with an abundance of history that sometimes we may not notice, simply because it has always been there. Since I was a young lad going on family holidays, I have wondered about the strange little octagonal building on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Telegraph Road. I knew that it was to do with our water supply but it was only recently that I looked closely at the reservoir to which it belonged. This led to an exploration which revealed interesting histories not only of this one but of the other
unique reservoirs that line the Pacific Highway. The Wahroonga Reservoirs near Woonona Avenue have provided water for many generations of North Shore residents. The large round riveted steel tank, built in 1898, has a capacity of 4.4 megalitres. The smaller riveted steel tank, distinctively elevated on its girder frame, was built in 1915 with a capacity of 1.1 megalitres.

Railway and bridges saw a rapid increase in the area’s development and the large 44 megalitre reservoir opposite was completed in 1937. This concrete reservoir’s construction is significant in that it was finished with an elegant brick facade and surrounded by trees to help make the structure more aesthetically pleasing. The divider (below left) allows half the reservoir to be drained for maintenance, without disrupting supply. The 1898 and 1937, reservoirs were originally open to the air but the risk of birds and airborne pollution led to them being covered during the late 1960s-mid 1970s.
Were you involved? Let us know. The Pymble Reservoir on the corner of Telegraph Road was completed in 1917. Pymble Bowling Club leased the grassed top from 1947 till club facilities were removed in 2002 because of the age of the heritage-listed reservoir’s concrete roof.

The Killara Reservoir on the corner of jacaranda-lined Lorne Avenue lies beneath Regimental Park, named for the local army unit now known as 2nd/17th Battalion, Royal NSW Regiment.

The reservoir was completed in 1931 and has a capacity of 166 megalitres. An expansive sports area with croquet courts, cricket pitch, tennis courts and soccer field sits on the reservoir’s grassed roof. Its elevation provides an interesting vista across the surrounds. Keep an eye out for these impressive water reservoirs next time you are driving along the Pacific Highway. CRAZY DOG APPS BY EDWINA HUNTER Fans of the ever-entertaining Beauty and the Geek will know, local entrepreneur, Brandon Cowan. Living Local Magazine is fortunate to have Brandon as our app writer (see page 9) so it has been great to watch him succeed but Brandon’s key success is due to his passion and expertise in creating apps. At just 16 years of age, he cofounded Crazy Dog Apps. "At the time, I wasn’t passionate about creating apps, I was passionate about creating new things from my ideas", he said. Achieving multiple awards and now, at only 19 years of age, his innovative apps and unique approach has seen Crazy Dog Apps featured on many popular media outlets.

I got in touch with Hilton Rosenfeld, a really smart family friend who had been in IT for over 30 years and shared my app ideas with him and shared my vision. He liked what he saw and together, we co-founded Crazy Dog Apps. 2. How long does it take to create a successful app? How long is a piece of string and what defines ‘success’ in an app? I recently created an app for the Taronga Conservation Society in less than three weeks (it is not yet released) as part of Vodafone AppAid 2013 and can imagine it will be very successful in that it will help solve the issue of the illegal wildlife trade. If it saves the life of even one animal, I would consider that to be a successful app but I’m sure it will save many, many more.
Assuming the person who wants to get an app made has never made one before, the developer of it should be a lot more than just 'a developer'. They should be experts in user experience design (layout of the app), interface/ graphics design, App Store optimisation and right down to offering suggestions about the monetisation of the app and which features the app should and shouldn’t have. There is a lot more to app development compared to what it appears the majority of the general public think. 4. Successful business, television star, what is next?

Admitingly, before I get up on stage to DJ I do get a bit nervous but once I'm up there jumping around, having a ball, the nerves just disappear. We met up with passionate local community leader and Prime Minister's wife, Margie Abbott, before she went to a lunch at the Manly Women’s Shelter where she is patron. Margie shares about her personal and family life, passion for her work, living in the local area and of course, about being married to the Prime Minister. Margie was born in New Zealand. Her desire to connect with people started early as Margie claims she made a "modest attempt" to learn the Maori language in the hope it would help break down barriers and build bridges. In 1983, Margie left New Zealand to work in the marketing department of a merchant bank in Sydney, where she met Tony Abbott, an Oxford educated, rugby playing, Rhodes Scholar and journalist with The Bulletin. He proposed marriage after taking her on the Kokoda Track and they married at Riverview Chapel in September 1988. They have three daughters, Louise, Bridget and Frances. 30
PERSONAL 1. There is quite a contrast in the role you have as director of an occasional care centre in Ku-ring-gai and being married to the Prime Minister. How do you balance this?
I just try to approach it by living in the moment.
My life hasn’t suddenly changed into something glamorous and exciting. We are a very ordinary Australian family who have found ourselves in an extraordinary situation and this is something I think it’s a state of mind. For that Tony and I have been very me, my work is my joy and my passion and being married to the keen to protect. When I first came to Australia . . . I would catch the ferry… and I would think, "Oh, that’s where the Prime Minister of Australia lives". Then I find myself in this situation and pinch myself. Life is strange. washing, walk the dog and do my own shopping. We want to keep doing these things because you can’t relate to the average person in the street if you are living in some surreal political bubble. You shouldn’t just disappear from your real life. People feel secure if they see you doing the things that you’ve always done - it adds value. We’re all just trying to do our best for our families or for the country on a bigger scale. Up until the 2010 election, most families at the centre where I work, had no idea who I was married to. It just doesn’t enter into it and it was only after that election, when there was the odd photo of me, that they would say, "Oh my goodness, we didn’t realise!" to which I would reply, "Well why would you?" Even now, I never talk politics [at the centre], I never talk about who I’ve met or what we might have done because when I’m at the centre, it’s the little people that are the priority. 32
2. In 1983, when you first arrived in Sydney, did you ever imagine being where you are now? No, never! In fact, that moment when I was standing at Kirribilli House with Prince Harry, my husband and our daughters, looking out over the most magnificent view over Sydney Harbour, I recalled when I first came to Australia and I was living in Manly. It is something that we have both worked very hard at. Tony has been in politics for almost 20 years and we made the decision early on that we would have independent lives so I could work or, in fact, I could do whatever

I chose, whether that would be me being at home (which I was very happy to do for a period of time) or going back to work. The weekends were always our family time and we tried to keep our public and our private life very separate, and it has worked to date. Of course, when he became Opposition Leader it changed because he was seen as the alternate Prime Minister and by extension, the family also needed to step up so to speak. We were lucky in that our girls were older and they could make the decision for themselves as to whether they wanted to be involved in campaigning or to attend functions with Tony and me. They love their father, they are very proud of their father, so for them that was just a natural extension of us as a family. I also think it’s very important for us as a family to see Tony in that role. He walks in our door and he is just Dad or Tony. He’s not allowed to get carried away with himself and he’s not the sort of person to www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Their first few steps away from that and that ability to realise that they can have friendships other than with the family, are important lessons for a young person. Society in general has tended to undervalue the importance of education in the early years and although I am a trained teacher, for me it’s just about the passion and something I have committed many years to. Now I find myself in a situation where I can talk about these things and draw attention to these things, not as a person with letters after my name but as a person who works in early childhood; I am very happy to do that.
do that. Equally, it’s important for us to see the work that he does. I think that by becoming involved, especially in recent times, the children get to see that side of him and as I say, they are very proud of him. But it’s the devil and the deep blue sea in terms of merging the public and the private, and despite the situation we are in now, and the blurring of lines, I think we will still (to a certain extent) be able to do that.
EARLY LEARNING EDUCATION 4. As a parent whose daughters attended the centre, then being director for the past five years, can you tell us why early education is so important? 34
Research has shown that the first five years of a child’s life are key times for brain development. The experiences, the love, the security, the relationships that a child has in the first five years are vital and the nature and the tone of these early experiences are the things that will hopefully set the foundation for good social relationships and brain development and confidence to go out into the big wide world and be able to say, "I can do this". I think equally, it’s a time for little people to see themselves other than just extensions of their parents. For the first few years they see themselves as very close to mum and dad

Equally, the people who work in early childhood have often been undervalued. As a society, and this is not just a political comment, we need to value our early childhood educators because they are doing a job in partnership with families, which I think is very important. 5. How difficult is it, as a carer, to speak to parents about any concerns you have with their child for example speech delays or hearing difficulty? These children are the whole world of the parent and as a carer, it’s all about the relationship you have with that parent and this is what I talk to my staff about. My guiding principle is that we have to treat every child as if they are our own and if it was my own child, as a parent, I would want www.livinglocalguide.com.au
COVERStory to be told [about any concerns] - we owe it to the families who have children in our care. They are always our priority, even if it turns out that it’s okay in the end, I would still want someone to tell me. It may just require speech pathology or be a behavioural issue, which can be very easily managed; but as a parent, yes, I’d want to know about that. Of course, once we have spoken to the parents, that’s not the end of the story but ultimately it’s a journey and we can support them along the way. 6. The Centre just celebrated its 37th birthday, which is a big achievement for any organisation. Can you tell us a bit about the celebrations? This is a community based not-for-profit Centre. In the early 1970’s a group of parents got together and thought, we don’t have a service that we can leave our children in for a period of time, so these parents formed a management committee. These were just local mums and dads. There’s a bit of a funny story. We have a sign that originally said 1973 so I had earmarked this year as our 40th anniversary but when going back through council documents we noticed [the centre] was only registered in 1976 so we decided to go ahead with the 37th birthday theme. So, it really is a celebration of community - we are not affiliated to anyone else - we are run by parents of the local community, for the parents. Although it’s

FAMILY 7. Do you have any house rules, for example with phones and emails, considering that you and Tony are in such demand? Tony has been magnificent. For 20 years, when he walks in the door the phone is switched off. Mind you, in recent times he has a tendency to check his phone but that is totally understandable and I will give him a little leeway. Tony has honestly been fantastic. He is completely devoted to family time. So, whether it is sitting on the deck eating breakfast or when the girls were younger, coming home at nine o’clock when the girls were asleep, he’d say I’ve got to go and read a story. He is committed to doing that and long may that continue. We may not be able to, as demands are far greater - certainly a very disciplined approach is required.
half kilogram (or one) more. My mother has type 2 diabetes so I am a prime candidate and so last Christmas, Tony gave me a bike. I had decided (and this is not a political response) that 2013 was going to be my year to get fit and be well. So, in January, a group of friends (who are the wives of all Tony’s mates that he cycles with) started getting together two to three times a week. We’ve done a number of charity rides, recently for The Kids Cancer Project and Giant Steps who support children with autism. It’s just gradual for me. I’ve lost almost 20 kilograms - I feel as though I’ve lost 20 years and my doctor is also saying to me that I’m well!
9. Do you cycle with Tony?
I have cut out bread and dairy and supplemented with other things. I went to see a naturopath and I got on the bike - it has really been life changing! My message to all women, regardless of your age, is (and particularly if you have a young family) when you can, exercise and have some time for yourself - for me it’s been life changing.
We don’t get a lot of time to cycle together. I started cycling in January, I’m 56 years of age soon and my doctor said, "You have a busy job and you walk every day but it’s not enough." Each time I visited him it would be another

I don’t see it as working out when we cycle as a group, we start with a coffee and end with a coffee and in the meantime, do a hard two hours. It’s very social as well. 10. With Christmas approaching, can you describe your family’s favourite traditions? To be with family - to put up the Christmas tree. We have neighbours over for breakfast every Christmas morning. We open the presents and we have a humble BBQ brunch for breakfast and then we are with the extended family after

that. Last year two of our daughters were overseas and it didn’t really feel like Christmas so this year we’re going to follow the girls because that’s Christmas for us - to be with family. This is the sign of the adult family, when we follow them!
LOCAL AREA 11. What do you love most about working on the Upper North Shore? It’s close to home, so I’m not having to battle traffic going to the city. The people and the families are fantastic. The people who work at the centre are locals and they are all fabulous. Part of our mission statement is that
we endeavour to reflect the hopes and values of those in the community and that’s what we strive to do. For me, that’s who I am too; so that’s a nice synergy. 12. Tell us a bit about bringing up your daughters in this area. Just prior to Tony moving into politics we moved to Fox Valley Road, Wahroonga and we used to frequent all the parks around there. We were surrounded with people like us - families commited to their communities and the places they lived in. That’s essentially what everyone wants in a community, to be around people you relate to.

Another very successful ‘Staff Grants’ evening was held at Turramurra Community Bank® Branch on 19 September 2013.
The celebration of the 10th Birthday of the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch has brought back memories of the community and business disruptions caused by rampant bank branch closures inflicted upon Australian townships and suburbs during 2001/02. While these memories might have dimmed somewhat, the reality was that the citizens of Ku-ring-gai experienced the disruptive effects of 13 bank branch closures during the early 2000’s. More recently, the residents of Lindfield and Turramurra have experienced further bank branch closures. The vision of the inaugural directors of Ku-ring-gai Financial Services Limited back in December 2002 comprised: n n n n n

The Staff Grants are a relatively new initiative at our branches where each staff member nominates a local community group to receive a small grant to be invested in a community project. The grants presentations are always very enjoyable as it is always fabulous to hear the uplifting stories from all the different recipients on the wonderful work they are doing in the community. Cheques were presented at the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch to seven recipients on the night: Warrawee Croquet Club, Turramurra High School Band, Warrawee Public School Library, Turramurra Rotary, Kissing Point Netball Club, Prostate Cancer Support Group (Jacaranda Lodge at the Sydney Adventist Hopsital), Walk Talk Fly Charity (on behalf of Jackson Keleher who has cerebral palsy). “Giving back to the community is an integral part of our Community Bank® branch’s philosophy. Both our Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank® Branches will continue to hold two ‘Staff Grants’ events per year” said David Langdon, Chairman, Ku-ring-gai Financial Services Limited.

At the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch, we like to empower women with wealth knowledge to help them plan for their financial security. Sadly, for a lot of women, taking control and planning for their financial future is just not on their agenda. Too many women still rely on their husband or partner to look after such matters. We recently hosted a seminar aptly named, ‘Girls Just Want to Have Funds’, at Avondale Golf Club. Gina Greenaway, our Financial Planner, covered topics that included superannuation and insuring your financial future. However, this seminar was not just about finances, the evening was also a fun fund raiser for the Cancer Council. The ‘Girls Night In’ initiative is all about bringing women together to celebrate and raise money to help the Cancer Council fight against breast and gynaecological cancers. Most people, including the Avondale Golf Club staff, wore something pink and over $500 was raised to support women’s health. Approximately 40 women attended on the night and most of the ladies were keen to do it all again next year. TURRAMURRA COMMUNITY FORUM The inaugural ‘Turramurra Community Forum’ was held on the 13th November at the Turramurra Masonic Hall. There was a fantastic turn-out with over 80 people from over 40 business and community groups meeting to present and discuss their ideas for projects and initiatives to improve the Turramurra community. Everyone was split into groups and they were invited to propose their ideas for projects that would benefit the Turramurra area and then there was a vote for the top priorities. A range of ideas were presented covering everything from having a community hub where people could congregrate, to bringing back the Post Office or using the building for the community’s benefit, to rejuvenating Rohini Street, to cycle ways to projects to support the disabled and elderly, just to name a few! The Turramurra Community Bank® Branch hosted the evening and will facilitate the next step which is determining which ideas were the most popular and organising committee/s to help implement the ideas.

Mrs Morgan is one of the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch staff’s favourite customers. Approximately 100 people attended a Cocktail Party to celebrate 10 years of Community Banking in Ku-ring-gai. It was held at Avondale Golf Club, Pymble on the 21st October. Mrs Morgan’s Melting Moments 8oz butter, 2oz caster sugar 6oz self-raising flour, 2oz cornflour, pinch of salt, ½ tsp vanilla. Cream the butter and sugar. Add flours, salt and vanilla. Bake for about 20 minutes in preheated oven at 160˚C degrees. To make the filling cream some butter, then add icing sugar gradually. Then add either vanilla and a bit of water to the mixture, ensuring it is not too thick. Alternatively, add some black coffee (instead of the vanilla and water) for a change. Join two biscuits together with the filling.

Derek Pola My comment (Krystyna): Derek came to Somatherapy Clinic in October 2012 suffering from a torn Rotator Cuff in his left shoulder three months ago. He suffered severe left shoulder pain, neck pain and referred pain down to his left wrist. The pain was interrupting his sleep. Pain and lack of sleep caused high stress, fatigue and great difficulty to work. His doctor advised him to have shoulder surgery as an only option and a few months post-operative rehabilitation. In the midst of being swept up in the festivities of Christmastime events, the curtain of 2013 is drawing to a close and we are left to reflect on how our lives were lived during the past year. Reviewing on what worked and what didn’t work in our lives during the year provides us with a window to discover missed opportunities. What happened to our New Year’s resolutions? What made them disappear into a vapour of good intentions?

Instead of a life lived with meaning and purpose, life slides down along a series of safe choices and random activities tied to an anchor of resistance.

GUARD YOUR MOUTH BY DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMEDSCI, BDENT (HON) Despite the various campaigns that have been designed to promote the use of mouthguards in sport there are still a large number of adults and children that don’t wear one. According to the Australian Dental Association’s website, only 36% of children aged 5-17 wear a mouthguard during games. Why is it important to wear a mouthguard? Wearing a mouthguard can prevent a number of different types of injury by absorbing and distributing some of the force from a blow to the head. These include soft tissue injuries around the lips and impact injuries to the jaw and teeth, which can be painful and potentially disfiguring. Treating these injuries is often complex and time 50
consuming, the cost of which far outweighs the cost of having a mouthguard fitted. When should a mouthguard be worn? Mouthguards should be worn whenever there is a risk of contact to the face. Therefore, it is important to wear one during training sessions as well as during games. Sports that may lead to preventable dental injuries not only include heavy contact sports such as rugby, AFL and soccer but also hockey, basketball, netball and recreational activities such as skiing. Are all mouthguards the same? No, a custom fit mouthguard made by a dentist will be a much better fit than any overthe-counter mouthguards. Over-the-counter mouthguards

How often should I replace my mouthguard? It is important to regularly check the fit of the mouthguard, especially when children are transitioning between their primary and adult teeth and also to check for any signs of damage. This can easily be done by bringing it along to their next dental check-up for their dentist to assess. How should I care for my mouthguard? Store it in a mouthguard box or firm plastic container and rinse with water after use. Avoid leaving it in the sun and never clean it in hot water as it will distort when exposed to heat. TARONGA ZOO'S newest member Early one morning, Taronga Zoo primate keepers watched on as the newest member of the Zoo’s renowned Chimpanzee group was born to mother, Kuma. Keepers had just arrived at the Chimpanzee Sanctuary to start their daily routine and observations, when Kuma delivered what keepers believe is a healthy young male. The experienced mother cradled the infant while other chimpanzees including her son, Furahi, 10 years, looked on with interest. Taronga primate keeper, Katie Hooker, said, "At 7:30 am, we were continuing to monitor Kuma‘s pregnancy in the exhibit where she was sitting on one of the climbing structures, about eight metres off the ground. She gave birth, easily reaching down to 54

Sadly, chimpanzees are increasingly endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, the bushmeat trade, and the illegal pet trade, which often sees young chimps abandoned or seized in poor physical and mental health.
Chimpanzees have highly structured family groups and mothering is learned. As the granddaughter of the former matriarch, Fifi, Kuma is wellplaced in the hierarchy of the group. Zoo visitors may be able to catch glimpses of the baby as Kuma has been in the Sanctuary’s exhibit since the birth.
Dr Goodall sent a message to Taronga on the opening of its Chimpanzee Sanctuary in September 2011 saying, "Taronga Zoo's chimpanzee community is well respected around the world. This new exhibit is very exciting and is filled with potential for the chimpanzees. I have come to know these chimpanzees well and I wish I was there today to see how they first react to their new home".

wonderful, wonderful 5 COPENHAGEN BY DENIS AND SUE PONTIN In Copenhagen we hired bikes and took advantage of an amazing ten days of mild sunny weather to travel around and see all the wonderful sights, especially the cafes and pastry and bread shops. Our daughter is studying at the University of Copenhagen and cycles to her lectures in the heart of Copenhagen from the city outskirts. We travelled further into Denmark on the efficient, clean and remarkably cheap railway system. Here are a few of our favourite sights. Enjoy! 1. ISRAELS PLADS - Our favourite meeting place was the Israels Plads food market near Norreport station. You could purchase in-season fruit and veg, seafood, meat, cheese, tea, coffee, oil, nuts etc. Since we self catered, this was great. We also purchased delicious egg-omelette wraps with mouth-watering filling.

fairytales are favourites with children worldwide. Our four children loved 'Thumbelina', 'The Emperor’s New Clothes', 'The Little Mermaid' and many more. This statue is found on the HC Andersen Boulevard and was a must for us to visit.

6. NYHAVN - Originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world docked, today the houses have been renovated and great restaurants line the canal. We had a great tasting plate of typical Danish savoury delights and a boat tour around the harbour and canals.
7. THE LITTLE MERMAID The bronze statue is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Copenhagen. Inspired by HC Anderson’s fairy tale, The Little Mermaid turned 100 years old just a month before our visit.
8. FREDERIKSBORG PALACE Built as a royal residence for King Christian IV and located on three small islands in the middle of Palace Lake. The adjoining, very large formal garden is magnificent and we spent a couple of hours walking through it enjoying its complexity and the wonderful view.

Northern Europe’s largest aquarium, surrounded by water. Standing in front of the Ocean Tank makes you feel very small with hammerhead and reef sharks, rays, moray eels and thousands of fish swimming overhead. There’s also a tank showcasing the Great Barrier Reef.
Operating since 1870 on the same site, it is an experience not to be missed. The traditional tearooms are steeped in history and the cakes and pastries are out of this world. Often a very long queue on weekends.

MONSOON TRIGGERS landslide BY RICHARD JACKSON MONSOON TRIGGERS LANDSLIDE The South Asian Monsoon was very destructive this year causing widespread loss-of-life and property damage, particularly in the Himalayas. Our key school, Bhairibi Primary School, in Ratmate, Gorkha had a narrow escape from catastrophe when the monsoon triggered a landslip immediately below the main school building. Fortunately the school escaped damage and we were able to act immediately, stabilising the site and building a stronger, concrete and masonry retaining wall.
WAHROONGA LOCAL FIGHTS THE HIMALAYAN SNOWS Wahroonga resident Craig Ley spent three nights in the remote, rarely visited Nepali Himalayan village of Manbu, Gorkha District during the January 2013 Nepal Charity Trek organised by Allan 60
Waldon of Eastern Road Quality Meats. Manbu is towards the upper limit of the habitable zone in the Himalayas and is very cold at night in winter. Manbu is home to a high school serving the surrounding villages where 42 of the students board during the week at a school hostel. A good quality school building in Nepal has a rough concrete floor, cement rendered walls, no glass in the windows and a corrugated iron roof: no ceiling, and insulation is unknown. This is bitterly cold for children trying to sleep during a winter snow storm as the freezing northern wind blasts the mountainside. Craig saw an urgent need and responded. Today a basic vinyl floorcovering makes the dorms both warmer under foot and easier to clean. Thanks to warm blankets and new sheets, the children are healthier and can

The 2012 UNSW student volunteer team raised several thousand dollars to help support the schools, following their visit last year. Their generosity and hard work has been invested in a computer studies facility at Bhairibi Primary School, comprising six desktops, two laptops, power supply and printer. The local people are very enthusiastic. Few computers are to be found in the area, as mains electricity has only been available for two years. But they have jumped straight to mobile phones, no landlines are available, and fully appreciate the vast potential of the internet for improving access to educational resources from around the world. The importance of the facility was underscored by its formal opening by the Chief District officer for Gorkha (equivalent to the State Premier) and District police chief. Students will pay a small fee approximately $1.50 per month to cover running costs and teacher salaries. Horse racing has a long and venerable tradition. Take the Melbourne Cup: since 1861, this event has been attended by scores of socialites, punters and partygoers who have revelled in its hedonistic traditions and festivities. Only the most light and nimble jockeys are successful. All horses are either three years old or over and must be bred from ‘pure’ bloodlines in order to compete at the famed carnival. Sadly, 'the sport of kings' has far 62
more losing punters than winners, with an estimated 115,000 'problem gamblers' in Australia (Healey, 2011). Underneath the glitzy façade lies a more sinister truth: horse 'wastage'. Each year, 18,000 thoroughbred foals are born into the horse racing industry in Australia. On average, 12,600 of these will be harshly and brutally discarded. Shockingly, the vast majority will be slaughtered, often in front of each other, before being made into dog meat or food for human consumption.

TOP 5 MORTGAGE TIPS BY MARK BOURIS, YELLOW BRICK ROAD EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN A lot of readers, from a recent article I wrote, wanted to know how to save money when you already have a home loan. Here are some tips: Have a plan: you should plan to own your home as fast as possible, and therefore pay as little interest as possible. Pay attention to the rate: consider a $350,000 loan over 30 years. If you had a 5.3% mortgage and refinanced at 4.94 % - maintaining the same repayments - your loan term would drop from 30 years to around 27 years and five months, saving around $60,000. Understand the loan term: shorter loan terms usually

mean you pay less interest and pay the debt faster. Let’s say you a have $350,000 mortgage at 4.94%, and you opt for a 25-year loan rather than a 30-year: you’d pay 19% less in interest, saving you $61,626. Shifting to a 20-year term will save you $120,199.20. Repayment frequency is key: the higher the frequency of payment, the slower the interest accrues and the faster you pay off the mortgage. If you pay half the monthly repayment amount fortnightly, rather than monthly, or a quarter of the monthly payment weekly, this means you end up paying the equivalent of an extra month’s payment

each year. Consider an average mortgage of around $350,000 and a 30 year term at 4.94%. You’d save around four years and eight months off your loan term and over $56,000 in interest, by paying the monthly repayment weekly or fortnightly. Put windfalls into your home loan: Tax refunds, Medicare rebates and work bonuses should go into the home loan, reducing interest and speeding repayment. When borrowers 'set and forget' their mortgage, they usually pay too much interest and have the debt longer than they should. Get focused and save yourself a lot of money.

DIABETES in our pets BY DR MARTINE PERKINS BVSC(HONS) MRCVS, MACVS, PYMBLE VETERINARY CLINIC By avoiding the risk factors, such as obesity, you can help reduce the chance of diabetes. What is Diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a deficiency in insulin production from the pancreas. Insulin is important in the utilisation of glucose in the body. Weight loss results from the body breaking down other resources to fuel the body as it cannot use its glucose stores. This is okay for a while, to cope with acute starvation, but over time ketones build up in the body and an uncomplicated case of diabetes turns into a very sick diabetic. What initial signs might your pet exhibit?
In dogs, sugars can enter the lens of the eye causing cataract formation. Because a cat's lens is different, this primarily occurs in dogs. Up to 70% of diabetic dogs develop cataracts within 12 months of their diagnosis, despite good diabetic control. Fortunately cataract removal is generally a very successful surgery. What breeds are affected? Some breeds are at increased risk. These include: the Australian terrier, schnauzers, bichon frise, poodles, samoyed, Yorkshire terrier, beagle, golden retriever, keeshond, and Burmese cats. What are other contributers? • obesity
• weight loss with an increased appetite
• infections and medications which cause insulin resistance
• increased drinking and urinating
• diseases such as pancreatitis, cushings, and hypothyroidism
•
pregnancy and dioestrus occasionally cause a gestational-type diabetes as seen in people.
Is diabetes curable? Dogs usually have type I diabetes. This is when there is an absolute lack of insulin production. Occasionally diabetes is transient in dogs but this is rare. In most instances we successfully manage diabetes rather than cure the dog. Cats more commonly get type II diabetes, which is when insulin production is impaired and triggers cause insulin resistance. In cats, we can often cure their diabetes by treating it well initially and resolving the causes of resistance such as obesity. Insulin therapy and dietary control are fundamental in the control of diabetes.
