your letters I love the stories and advertising that definitely have a "North Shore" focus. It's really good to know where the "deals" are. In the summer 2013 issue it was also really interesting to read about Margie Abbott, we know so much about the Prime Minister Tony Abbott but little is known about his wife Margie. It was great to learn more about her and to know she is a real community champion. I also really like the fact that you support Monika's Doggie Rescue. What an absolutely great job Monika does in rescuing unwanted doggies from all over Sydney. Mandy - Turramurra The article that I like most this month is 'PM's Wife & Local Community Champion' as she is an inspirational lady who remains down to earth in spite of being the 'First Lady!' Debbie - St Ives
We love to hear from you! PO Box 3116, North Turramurra, 2074 P: 8213 7306 E: editorial@livinglocalguide.com.au W: www.livinglocalguide.com.au W: www.facebook.com/LivingLocalGuide Living Local Magazine is a seasonal magazine. 45,000 copies are delivered to both businesses and households throughout the Upper North Shore.
We are all about connecting people to their community.
The article, Our Water Reservoirs by Robert C. Johnston - Issue 28, is a great write-up. As a local resident of four years and a migrant of 12 years, I am always interested in knowing this land better and this article showed me many places I have seen and had questions myself. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this piece and thank you all for sharing it with your readers. Please keep the good stuff coming. Alan - St Ives My favourite part of the magazine is that you feature local North Shore people who have made a difference in their community and deserve to be recognised. It could be a devoted dad like David Keleher or someone famous like Margie Abbott who is actually very humble as the article reveals. It is interesting and informative to read about these people who live and work among us. Tracy - Lindfield What I like most about the Living Local magazine is it's packed with information relating to the Upper North Shore. I like finding out places to eat which we weren't aware of before. We also like the Education news so we are informed of the activities that have been happening and how the schools are performing. I like the fact that when we read the magazine, we know all the information relates to places and people that are from our local community. It would be even better if the magazine is published more often! June - Turramurra I really enjoyed the cover story about the PM's wife. The cover story is always topical and this time was no exception. Jocelyn - Gordon

If you live on or around Bradfield Rd in Lindfield you may know that the area holds particular national significance.
RAAF TRAINEES LEAVE BRADFIELD PARK FOR TRAINING IN CANADA, 1940. PHOTO: AWM
The Royal Australian Air Force had a station here which was known as RAAF Bradfield Park. During the Second World War, thousands of RAAF recruits trained here before being funnelled into roles such as pilots, navigators, wireless operators and gunners.
Len flew 30 missions as a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot, with many close scrapes. His most rewarding mission was flying Allied Prisoners of War back to England after years of captivity.

TOP APP REVIEWS BY BRANDON COWAN, APP DEVELOPER - CRAZY DOG APPS
MOUSTACHIO: HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIDEOS Are you sick of wishing your friends happy birthday with a lame card or boring 'HBD' Facebook post? If so, try wishing them happy birthday Moustachio-style and shock your friends by sending them an unforgettable video. Moustachio is a hilarious app that lets you select the name of your friend and a custom video is created, sung by a semi-naked man with a moustache. There are thousands of names and if the name that you want is not already there, you can request it. May the power of the Moustache be with you… Moustachio is available for free on iPhone with inapp purchases to share his videos, unlock a second character and to add custom text.
PACT: EARN CASH FOR LIVING HEALTHY Pact is an innovative app that encourages you to do more exercise and eat healthy… or you pay! Making a pact through the app is easy. You simply enter how many days a week you want to go to the gym, select how much money you’ll pay for each day you miss and enter your payment information. Each time you go to the gym, you simply check in and make sure you stay there for at least 30 minutes. If you meet your weekly pact, you’ll earn (admittedly not very much) money and if you break your pact, you pay the price. It also lets you create pacts to eat more veggies and log healthy food.
APPS GONE FREE If you're like me and hate paying to download apps (ironically I do sell my own apps on the App Store…) but still want to discover new apps, you’ll love Apps Gone Free. Every day, it shows approximately 5-8 new apps that are free for 24 hours only. The thing I like about Apps Gone Free is that we aren’t bombarded with choice and are simply presented with a few, highquality and curated apps each day. Some days there are a few great apps to download and others there are just apps that would appeal to other people. The app can send you a notification once a day when they refresh the list of free apps, which I find useful, but you can turn off this notification. Apps Gone Free is available for free on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad.
LAZER TAG Created by Hasbro, one of the world’s leading game designers, Lazer Tag is simply an incredible gaming app that offers a unique experience. As the name suggests, it is exactly like normal lazer tag and virtual enemies fly across your screen. However, instead of just using the touch screen of your device, you actually move the device around and turn your body to face the virtual enemies. There are levels, different weapons and enemies, upgrades and lots of other cool stuff.
It connects with other fitness apps such as RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal and MapMyRun.
You could combine Lazer Tag with Pact and if you are as unfit as me (I’m pretty unfit as I just make apps on my computer virtually every day), playing Lazer Tag can become your Pact workout!
Pact is available for free (you actually make money if you stick to your pacts) on iPhone and Android.
Lazer Tag is available for free on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

SOCIALLocal But let me invite you to look again at the Easter story – for here God gives his answer to death: life!
HAPPY EASTER! BY ANDREW REES, RECTOR AT ST ANDREW’S WAHROONGA
Easter is a strange holiday, don’t you think? Sure four days off is nice but it is all very low key. Christmas seems much more appealing. What’s missing at Easter? We may struggle with Easter because of its subject matter - Easter seems to be about death. It’s not surprising that we invent a chocolate laying
bunny to distract us. Death or chocolate? The choice is obvious! Or is it? Because, once we wake on Easter Day from our chocolate induced slumber, we know death is all too present in our world and sometimes it gets far too close. Death is no friend of ours. Death takes what is good and brings it to an end.
What’s missing at Easter? The Bible’s answer to that is unexpected. What’s missing is death. Easter announces news of an empty tomb and a risen man. But not just any man. Jesus – God’s Son – who came to lay down his life for us, only then to take it back again; because it was impossible for death to hold him. At Easter, God says death will not win this day because he has defeated it and he calls us to share in his victory. Jesus said "he who believes in me will live, even though he dies", do you believe this? Happy Easter! Andrew Rees (Rector St Andrew’s Wahroonga) 2 Water Street, Wahroonga Ph: 9489 3278 E: office@standys.org.au Web: www.standys.org.au

MOST CREATIVE ENTRY! Anita - Pymble "One of my favourite things to do on the North Shore is exploring the Cascades in St Ives. I once saw a great historical picture from the early 1900's showing that it has been consistently enjoyed for such a very long time. My other favourite outing is to the Butcher's Block in Wahroonga, the staff are so friendly and the food so fresh, it is hard not to come for morning tea and want to stay on for lunch!" Marie - Gordon
"I love a sunrise kayak at Apple Tree Bay and paddling under the suspension bridge at Bobbin Head as far as you can go. You literally pass no one, the scenery is unbelievable and makes you feel as if you are in a Northern QLD rainforest! I often lie back on the kayak and peacefully take in my surroundings. A perfect day would be my family meeting me afterwards at the marina for a big brekky and feeding the fish. We are blessed living where we do!!!"
"My favourite thing to do on the upper north shore is cycle commuting to work with the Easy Riders. They leave Gordon every weekday at 6:45am and get to the city at 7:30am for coffee." Caroline - St Ives
WINNER!
Deb Walker - Turramurra

"I love chocolate but don't love the ingredients so lately I have been making my own! 4T raw cacao powder (unsweetened), 4T melted organic coconut oil, 2T honey, 1tsp vanilla. Mix, pour into chocolate moulds and store in freezer. Coconut oil melts in warm weather so I eat them straight out of the freezer." Liz - St Ives
"We live in West Pymble within walking distance of the mall and we love it! It’s a hidden treasure with great cafes. We love eating at Ventuno Italian Cafe/ Restaurant and the best shop for chocolate for us would have to be Otello Chocolates & Patisserie." Leigh Hatcher - West Pymble
Congratulations to our two entries selected to WIN BRIDGE CLIMB double passes. For your chance to WIN one of two family passes to TARONGA ZOO and to be published in our next edition, tell us your favourite places or things to do in winter, on the Upper North Shore. See p.7 for further details. 16

IGA PLUS LIQUOR OPENING BY BRIAN HANDISIDES, FREELANCE WRITER
A great community affair was held when IGA Plus Liquor St Ives had their grand opening over the Australia Day weekend. While the focus of the day was the opening of the new IGA, all the other shops in the St Ives centre joined in the celebrations by including samples of their coffee or food. It was a great show of the area’s community spirit. Kids were entertained by the Streets Paddle-Pop Lion, clowns, balloons, face painting and the Ku-ring-gai Fire Brigade engine which could be explored. Meanwhile, adults were able to sample wines and everyone shared in the sausage sizzle. Margie Abbott spoke briefly about the importance of community and, along with the Chriss Family and IGA Management team, cut the cake and opened the store. The management team then surprised Margie with a 18
donation to her workplace, St Ives Occasional Care, a not-forprofit centre for children up to five years. IGA have also made donations to other schools in the area and have established a reputation that cares for their local communities. Sasha and Sarai Vallaydam, husband and wife, are managing the new store. Offering a great selection, in a good location, with plenty of parking and friendly staff, they are sure to meet the needs of the community. The Chriss Family have been supporting the communities of Turramurra, Nth Turramurra, Galston and Belrose for more than 20 years. They now look forward to supporting the local schools, sporting clubs and local community groups of St Ives. The carnival atmosphere of the opening was a great showcase of the new store and fun was had by all. Congratulations IGA Plus Liquor St Ives on your opening.

automated skin MICRO NEEDLING
Skin+ in Pymble is pleased to be one of the first skin clinics in Australia to offer this. A new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin's texture, tone and colour. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. The skin's repair process results in a thicker dermis with softer wrinkles. New collagen production reverses years of sun damage. There is also a positive effect on hyperpigmentation as well as treating acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks. Patients notice an immediate "glow" to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several weeks. Results continue to improve up to six months after the treatment as collagen production continues.
Eastern Road Quality Meats have been in Turramurra for 16 years, having previously had a butcher in Fairlight for seven years, "Here [Turramurra] you get to know the families; we know them with young children up to their graduation." 1. Where is your farm located? Dunedoo - close to Dubbo. It is about a four and a half hour drive from Sydney. 2. How long are you at the farm? I’m spending four days a fortnight. It is less work in summer (as it is too hot) but as we come into autumn we will start planting and the winter maintenance including welding. 3. How are you coping in the drought? We’re surviving; we store a lot of hay in the shed and use it in the bad season. We also have a grazing permit. This gives you access to grass outside of the paddock, alongside quiet roads. A lot of paperwork is required to do this. 4. How is the farm developing? 2,500 trees were recently planted - 7 kilometres of tree lines. We’re active participants in Landcare Australia. More bird-life, shade for the animals, etc. We’re saving water with our trough and dam systems. We run the sprinklers on our recycled water. Cows will always go to the cooler water: our troughs stay cool which lessens the algae and every week they’re scrubbed-out. Cleaner the water, better the stock. We don’t use dogs to round up our cattle, just motorbikes. The cows want to be moved - grass is always sweeter in the new paddock where they will often frolic. Our goats graze - they’re organic weeders. They eat the flowering heads on the saffron thistle. 5. Achievements last year? North Shore’s Best Business Winner • We were awarded over 4 councils, at Luna Park on the 22nd Oct. We won overall with big awards for, "Paddock to Plate," sustainable farming, along with a host of other things including our charity work in Nepal. 2013 Tasmanian RAS Fine Food Show

• Heavy duty moisturiser for night time. Like old-school cold cream, to combat the effects of cool winds and central heating. • Lip gloss in a soft colour. This is the perfect balance to a heavy eye and looks great at the office. Many brands do half balm/half gloss formulas to keep your pucker perfect.
SPLURGE ON… • Foundation. Remember that girl in high school who had cheap orange foundation? Wish yours looked like that? Didn't think so. Foundation should be professionally colour checked twice a year to avoid “tide lines” and to ensure you have the right formula for a seamless finish. Try a more hydrating style to look five years younger. You're welcome. • Serum. This is where quality is everything. Serums have the highest concentration of active ingredients to really make a difference to your skin. They can combat everything from flakiness to spots and fine lines. Beats surgery! • A small bottle of luxe perfume. We only get cool weather in Sydney for a few months, so make the most of it with something warm and spicy. Snuggle up! • A really, really great lipstick. Invest in one top-notch, standout lip colour for the season, for when you really need to stop traffic. While you’re at it splash out and get a matching lip liner.

further developed. As an educator, possessing a growth mindset is invaluable to my students: their resilience increases, their ability to learn matures, and the standard of their work improves. As a Principal and a parent, I believe this approach gives our children an advantage for the rest of their lives. The advantage is this: that they are free to dream of the possibilities and pursue their personal best because they have learned how to ‘grow themselves’. By Mrs Megan Krimmer, Principal Roseville College.
Inspiring our children towards their best. Do you believe you or your children are born with a fixed IQ? Many of us have been brought up to believe that “some people are just born brighter than others and there is nothing you can do to develop intelligence”. We think differently at Roseville College, where we foster a growth mindset in our students. This theory, underpinned by compelling brain research, holds that every individual has tremendous hidden potential and that each one of us has the ability to grow and continually improve. This means that every person’s – every child’s intelligence can be

as "a place where children truly love coming to school, every day." There is an increasing demand by parents for an alternative education that complements the parenting practices of the home. "Our parents do not want the educational approach of traditional schools that churn out 'copy and paste' children who are the product of a restrictive and stifling education", says Mrs Maxfield. Thirty five years ago the pioneer parents at Pymble wanted an educational approach that recognised and fostered a child’s natural drive to grow and learn. They wanted their child to have choice, peer-learning, hands-on experiences, individualised as well as independent learning, and multi-aged classes. Today, parents want the very same things for their child and at Northside Montessori School this approach continues. Additionally, the school now provides many extra activities that busy parents want as part of a "one-stop shop." This includes languages, choir, orchestra, computing workshops, dance, sport, cultural experiences, camps, and so on. All that along with the schools OOSH program make it easy to see why this school continues to succeed.
Masada College Masada College recently hosted 300+ delegates from around Australia for their 3rd Cultures of Thinking in Schools Conference. "It was a great mix of public and private educational sectors, executive staff and classroom teachers. The idea is to create students who are independent thinkers responsible for their learning, rather than spoonfeeding. Creativity, empathy, metacognition and confidence in their thinking processes are reinforced," said Masada College Principal Wendy Barel. Mark Church of Harvard’s Project Zero was keynote speaker. Introductory workshops by Deputy Head Senior School/ Head Curriculum David Cook and Head Junior School Michelle Chaplin outlined key concepts and Masada’s journey. Advanced workshops by Head Teaching and Learning Simon Brooks looked at the role/purpose of Focus Groups.

SKY HIGH LEIGH HATCHER EDWINA HUNTER INTERVIEWS LEIGH HATCHER
One of Australia’s best-known finished hosting the national Sunday night radio program journalists, Leigh Hatcher. INTRO I had the privilege of interviewing one of Australia’s best-known television and radio journalists, Leigh Hatcher. Leigh’s career spans over four decades, which includes work as the Bureau Chief for the Macquarie Radio Network in the Canberra Press Gallery. He worked for the Seven Network as a Political and European Correspondent as well as the network’s Chief Olympic Correspondent. Leigh has also written a best selling book, "I’m Not Crazy, I’m Just a Little Unwell" in which he shares his experience of battling with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Last year, Leigh resigned from Sky News and 32

Leigh is also a husband, father and yet to be discovered "rock star" and now, Leigh believes he's walked into the biggest story in the world today - the new Director for Public Affairs with HammondCare. 1. With much success in both television and radio, you have now begun a new journey as the Director of Public Affairs for HammondCare. What’s the big news story people need to hear and what’s one of the aims you would like to achieve in your new role? The big news story is the care and support for our ageing population. There are about three million people at the moment over the age of 65 and that number will grow to eight million by 2050. The miracle of modern science means that we are staying alive longer and we are managing our increasingly complex health problems. However, there are big challenges ahead and big questions about how to provide quality care for and support for people, especially the needy. HammondCare is on the front line of that. As the Director of Public Affairs, one of my aims will be to show Australia a quality model of true care that has been built up over many decades by HammondCare. I’ll also be aiming to promote www.livinglocalguide.com.au
Our children LOVE coming to school EVERY day... ...come and see why. The real test of an education is if children can adapt to the next phase of their life and be happy in themselves and their abilities. This is our goal at Northside Montessori School. Our graduates tell us of their ability to accept challenges, take ownership of their learning, mix with diverse groups and have realistic knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses. We want our students to have wings to fly - to find their passions in life and have the courage to pursue them. Our education allows that to happen. We offer an educational program for children aged 18 months to 12 years - “giving children wings to fly”

'...there is nothing more that will keep you grounded as having kids!' a better understanding of the health and aged care challenges ahead, especially in dementia care. 2. How did HammondCare help you when your family needed assistance? Two years ago we cared for my in-laws at home. My father-in-law was sadly dying of leukaemia and my mother-in-law had dementia and was on dialysis. We tried for months to get them residential aged care but no one would take them together, due to the complex medical challenges they presented. That was until we came to HammondCare, who went the extra mile for us and came through for us where others didn’t. They said 'We don’t do dialysis – but we can learn' – and they did!
CAREER 3. What are some of the highlights of your career and did you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation reporting the news? There are so many highlights but very early on in my career 34
when I was 19, and to my utter amazement, I was appointed the Macquarie Radio Network’s Canberra Bureau Correspondent. I arrived on budget day 1975 the beginning of the so called constitutional crisis of 1975. For the next three months we had this crisis unfold until the first sacking of an Australian Prime Minister. It was a baptism of fire. Frankly, I hadn’t known much about politics up until then, so I had to learn on the job – fast! Other highlights would have to include being appointed the Seven Network’s Chief Olympic Reporter, and covering two Olympics - in Atlanta and Sydney 2000. I was there when Sydney was awarded the games in Monte Carlo - when Juan Antonio Samaranch said those now immortal words, 'and the winner is Sydney!' I’ve also done some significant stories about not-so-famous people who have made immeasurable contributions to others. Soon after Fred Hollows died, we went with Gabi Hollows to Vietnam. While we were there
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2014
we also did an interview with a lady who started an orphanage for abandoned children in the old Saigon. Christina Noble is her name and her story had such an amazing response when it went on air on the Seven Network. As a result, an Australian Christina Noble Children’s Foundation Australia was set up to raise funds for the vital work of helping children in need. It was one of the most moving stories I have done. My wife and I had the privilege of going to Saigon about two months ago and we dropped in and saw a still thriving orphanage 20 years on. Undoubtedly the most dangerous situation I faced was in the 1994 bushfires in the Blue Mountains of NSW. It was on the final day of the fires and we went into this blaze at Winmalee as it was wiping out a row of houses. I had already recorded my 15 seconds reporter’s 'piece to camera'. I immediately lost the camera crew, and fearing I’d die of smoke asphyxiation – I ran for some clear air. Then I thought I couldn’t leave them in there. I found them and in the midst of the chaos yelled - 'we’re out of here - no story is worth more than our lives!' As we’re running, my cameraman screamed out - 'I’m rolling, do your piece to camera again' so I turned around and blurted out my lines again as we literally ran for our lives. Before long we were taken into a sort of protective police custody in the back of a paddy wagon for about half an hour! www.livinglocalguide.com.au
4. In such a dynamic and cutthroat industry, can you tell us how you remain true to yourself and down-to-earth? I’ve got a family!!! I’ve got a wonderful wife, Meredith, who’s always been extremely adaptable. She’d worked in the medical and pastoral arenas - very different from the world of media - and that’s been good for us. Plus, I have four kids and there is nothing more that will keep you grounded as having kids! I have made a number of significant decisions in life to be a relevant husband and father. As I look back now, they have been the most significant and important decisions of my life.
'We’re out of here - no story is worth more than our lives!'
5. What are some of the technological changes in media that you have observed throughout your career? I first started 40 years ago and that world of the media is absolutely unrecognizable now. It’s remarkable to contemplate
how much it’s changed - from those clunky old telephones on the desk, reel to reel tapes and no mobile phones. One of my earlier jobs was being copy boy at the Sydney Morning Herald. I’d pick up the copy through the night shift and fax it through to 2GB. I’d put it on kind of a barrel machine and it would take five minutes to send each page through. Now, you have instant access to any information all around the world. In 1988 I got to take out Channel Seven’s first mobile phone – it was like a small case! When I was the European correspondent, we had one satellite feed a day. Now, you simply take a little satellite briefcase with you, open it up
www.livinglocalguide.com.au
and you are live on air. 6. What impact has social media had on the reliability of journalism? Reliable journalism has always been a big issue. It’s not just about getting the whole truth or nothing but the truth - but it’s also the impression of truth that you leave people with. I think the audience is more discerning today. With things like Twitter, everybody can be a reporter today. You no longer need to be employed by a broadcaster to broadcast news to the world. That poses lots of big questions about accuracy, reliability and truth. It’s a huge issue for not only the media but also for consumers of media.

FINDING YOUR FREEDOM FROM PAIN
FREQUENCY SPECIFIC MICROCURRENT TO THE RESCUE FOR PAIN AND INJURY BY KRYSTYNA ZAWADZKA, SOMATHERAPY, GORDON Pain affects lives. From minor aches to chronic agony, pain can change your mood, affect your health, destroy your relationships and stop you living your life to the full. But pain cannot exist by itself. It is the physical manifestation of some form of tissue trauma or dysfunction. Up until now, the most common way to manage pain was to repair any obvious injury and treat ongoing problems with anti-inflammatory drugs and/or pain killers. This method, while effective in some cases, neglects cellular tissue trauma and can lead to chronic pain and dysfunction. There are also other modalities that can help with persistent pain and improve health: nutrition, manual therapy, acupuncture, 44
various energy therapies and behaviour choices.
BUT FREQUENCY SPECIFIC MICROCURRENT THERAPY IS DIFFERENT! FSM Therapy incorporates some of the most up-to-date research and techniques in pain and injury management, directly targeting individual tissues and cellular disturbances to repair damaged tissue and enhance bioelectrical activity. It is a new way to treat myofascial pain, nerve pain and nerve regeneration. It offers a safe, effective treatment option, an alternative to surgery or medications, which are commonly recommended for sport injuries, pain or inflammation. The treatments carry no risks associated with
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2014
FSM is the trigger that stimulates repair, healing and regeneration of tissue after injury. It expedites the body’s natural healing from illness, inflammation and injury. Microcurrent frequencies are applied to specific conditions in different tissues. They resonate with the body’s tissue and change the pathological structure of the tissue. FSM uses currents in the micro ampere range, 1000 times less than TENS and below sensory threshold (you don't feel it). FSM therapy is particularly effective in treating nerve and muscle pain, post- surgical scars, headaches, bursitis, tendonitis, disc bulges, compression neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome, knee joint pain. New injuries heal in record time. FSM has been extensively researched and used by NASA. For more information please contact Somatherapy Clinic in Gordon. Somatherapy is licensed and certified FSM healthcare provider and has been using this therapy for over 9 years. SEE PAGE 46 FOR FURTHER DETAILS. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

what medical doctors say about
FSM THERAPY TREATMENTS: In my 20 years in medicine I have never experienced any treatment or therapy that provides relief and results as quickly as Frequency Specific Microcurrent. I have been amazed and pleased. Robert Lerman, MD PhD FSM is a whole new approach to the treatment of musculoskeletal pain patients that is far superior to any other treatment available. This was my personal experience. David Simmons MD - Author of “The Trigger Point Manual”
One of the best treatments that I have found is Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)… This form of therapy works quickly, with minimum discomfort and often with a rapid result … I could actually feel the tissue soften and melt under the microcurrent gloves. I can look forward to steady progress. I heartily recommend this treatment. Devin Starlanyl MD Author of “Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain: A Survivor’s Manual”
what patients say about
FSM THERAPY TREATMENTS: I have tried many kinds of treatment for my atypical chest pain without any relief. Doctors were unable to diagnose what’s causing the problem. X-rays, MRI and Cat-Scans all showed just wear and tear. I was left with strong pain killers as the only solution. General advice was to give up golf. I decided to try FSM in Somatherapy. After my first treatment I felt lighter, fitter and more flexible. Now, ten treatments later I have no pain

now after five treatments I have returned to comp tennis.
Sue Gilespie
My shoulder’s range of movement has improved greatly and my body improved so much so that I can enjoy the game that I love. Thank you Krystyna for a great job.
This is just a note to thank you for your successful treatment of my back condition. The targeted treatment of the ligaments supporting my thoracic spine was particularly helpful. I have seen my haematologist and he was keen that I should get back to swimming. I had my first swim yesterday.
Greg Raffell I have had frequent knee injuries, severe persistent pain, weakness in both legs and surgery on an old knee fracture. I was facing giving up my gardening business. I started FSM therapy two months ago. At the end of a very hard day of work during which I have climbed my ladder ‘one million times’ and walked up hills for nine hours, I would like to present my feedback regarding my final treatment: VERY GOOD! Exceptional resilience to fatigue and more and more comfortable in my knees as the day went through. Again, thank you very much. Luca Facibeni
Last year I developed a disc bulge in my lower back which made it hard to stand for more than a few minutes. I was facing back surgery as my only option until I found Krystyna. She gave me hope and she helped me get better with weekly treatments. Within a few weeks my disc bulge was gone and I’m now a walking miracle with little pain in my lower back. Rhonda Collier Hi Krystyna, I am so thrilled that I am pain free and doctors now say, "No operation needed!" Thank you as I am convinced you have helped greatly. Derek Pola
All this would not have been possible without your treatment to get me through the painful stage without physical manipulation. My post-herpetic (shingles) nerves settled to a manageable level. I shan’t hesitate to recommend your services to others, and I may well return at some stage according to my needs at the time. With thanks again, Jody Trouncer I had a chronic lower back pain for 20 years and I had numerous physio, chiropractic and massage treatments with little relief.
My comment (Krystyna): Derek came to Somatherapy Clinic in October 2012 suffering from a torn Rotator Cuff in his left shoulder. He suffered severe left shoulder pain, neck pain and referred pain down to his left wrist. The pain was interrupting his sleep causing him to be fatigued, stressed and he had great difficulty in working. His doctor advised him to have shoulder surgery as the only option and a few months postoperative rehabilitation. Derek was treated with Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy twice a week, for 2 1/2 months, resulting in a full recovery. FURTHER EXPERIENCES AND RESULTS ARE ON ENQUIRY.

YOURHealth I will usually only replace metallic fillings when there is evidence that it is starting to leak or fatigue, when the tooth around the filling has chipped or fractured or when a patient is absolutely adamant that they no longer want them.
ARE SILVER FILLINGS a bad idea?!? BY DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMEDSCI, BDENT (HON)
Over the last few years there has been a lot of negative discussion regarding the use of dental amalgam such as the silver fillings that dentists use to restore decayed or broken teeth. It is obvious that these fillings are not as aesthetically pleasing as the tooth coloured materials such as composite or glass ionomer cements but they have been used for over a hundred years and in certain clinical situations they may be more suitable and last longer. Is it true that silver fillings contain Mercury? Yes, mercury is contained within dental amalgam and this is a source of a lot of the negative 48
sentiment that revolves around metallic fillings. However once the filling has set in the tooth, the mercury is contained within metallic compounds and there is no research or evidence to suggest that these fillings result in harmful levels of mercury leaching out and getting into the body.
Ultimately the decision as to what material is used to restore a tooth is up to each individual patient. Dentists will generally offer their opinion as to which material they think is most suitable for a given clinical situation. Should I now have my silver fillings removed? Generally, I would never recommend replacing metallic fillings unless there is a legitimate dental need to do so. Each time a filling is replaced it results in additional tooth loss and potential trauma to the nerve within the tooth. Therefore

THE SOUND OF SUCCESS AUDiOHEALTH is a third generation family practice. Their experience is second to none and their dedication is vocational. Traditional family values are reflected in all aspects of the clinic and the focus is firmly on client needs and positive outcomes. In these economic times good value is a great motivator and you can save several thousand dollars on high end technology at the clinic with competitive pricing and there is added value in terms of personal service and after care. Old fashioned service means listening to clients’ needs and delivering the best product that the client can afford coupled with
ongoing support and care. Many people delay seeking assistance for so long that they forget what normal hearing sounds like which can be quite overwhelming unless the amount of amplification prescribed is just right. Initially, the hearing devices are set at a comfortable level with gradual increases over a period of time so that clients can ease into their new sound environment at a comfortable pace. "This approach" says Aaron Magee-lead clinician at the Gordon clinic -"works well in that the majority of our clients are hearing so well they are using their instruments on a daily

basis. Being an independent clinic, which is a rarity these days with only 17% of the profession remaining Australian owneroperated. This means we offer the personal touch and have the autonomy to offer clients more choice from a wide range of products, flexible pricing and one on one after care which is second to none. I am not happy unless my client is happy." If you suffer from hearing loss, want to improve your health and quality of life and that of your family, recent statistics show that this is one of the best ways to do this. WHO DO YOU THINK you are? BY TINA VARTIS, FREELANCE WRITER Are you, worthy of love, belonging and acceptance? How do you arrive at determining your value as a person? Are you influenced by the media or by comments made by friends, family, work colleagues and spouses? Do comments made about you on social media deeply impact you? How we answer these questions profoundly affects our ability to navigate through life. When we receive a constant flow of unfiltered negative messages about ourselves, we begin to internalise and believe the substance of those messages. Whether we realise it or not those unfiltered messages become 'personal truths' with the power to dominate our emotions, influence the choices we make and define our identity. Some messages are blatantly delivered 50
whereas others are delivered by stealth aimed at our hearts in order to harm us. What underlying messages would you receive about yourself if your talents went unrecognised, unappreciated and your efforts consistently discounted? What happens when you face rejection or find yourself the target of unwarranted criticism? How do you deal with discovering that people treat your needs as less important as theirs? If we look solely towards others for our value and identity and the only consistent messages we receive are negative, eventually we will reap from those seeds of negativity. Seeds which harvest low confidence, low sense of value, feelings of inadequacy, shame, fear and insecurity. How can we restore a healthy sense of identity? We need to
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2014
take inventory of toxic thinking and adopt a resilient mindset. Start examining situations, which give rise to negative beliefs. Identify the message behind the belief and challenge it. Replace dysfunctional 'personal truths' with the truth e.g. you share a personal opinion with others that is not well received and you’re ridiculed for holding that position. Your personal truth maintains that you must always have agreeable views with others in order to feel good about yourself and maintain your relationships. This event made you feel angry, embarrassed, rejected, stupid and isolated from others. So what can now be done? Ask yourself whether your reaction nurtured you, helped you in your relationships and whether the label placed on you is factual. If its not nurturing, if it harms your relationships and if holding a different opinion is not a sign of stupidity then holding onto and storing those initial emotions and thoughts will become detrimental to you. Your response instead needs grounding in reality. Challenge the message. Give yourself permission to be different and acknowledge that worth is not based on acceptance by those who disagree with you. Your value is intrinsic and others do not bestow it upon you. Remember, "It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters". www.livinglocalguide.com.au

When we learnt of the information that gave the background for the following story, it made us think that there are people with financial plans and/or financial planners that should feel very uncomfortable.

CAROLYN STEDMAN being a foster parent LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE INTERVIEWS CAROLYN STEDMAN
Carolyn and her husband, David, have raised six of their own children and for the last 40 years have made themselves available as foster parents to care for about sixty children in need. They have made a difference to many children's lives through their remarkable gift of care. Having been a foster parent for 40 years, what has this experience done for you and your family? 40 years of foster care has been an incredibly positive experience. It has shown our children how very blessed they were to have a stable, safe and loving home. It also gave our children a very realistic idea of what it was like to have a baby as part of the family. Our children learned numerous lessons about the care of small children and babies, which has helped them in the parenting and care of their own children. For David and I, it has been wonderful to be able to contribute in this way to our community. 54
What changes have you noticed over the years as a foster parent? I think, many years ago, that there was a focus on the parents of the foster child but now that has changed and the focus is definitely on the child. When a child comes into care, he/she comes with a 'My Life Story Book'. This book enables the carer to record significant information about the child's development and experiences. In this way, the child does not lose a part of their life. Main lessons you have learned over the past 40 years? The importance of a caring, loving and stable family environment. How have you balanced being a mum to your children and having your hands full with the needs of your foster children? I pray for patience. I believe we are all given gifts from God. Ours is the gift of caring. How many children do you have a one time? Usually one at a time but there have been several occasions
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2014
when a sibling group of two or three children have needed care together. Placements usually last between nine months - two years. What advice would you give other foster parents or those interested in fostering? If foster care is something people feel they would like to do, I would encourage them to contact one of the foster care agencies for information about getting started and training. Any parenting pearls of wisdom? Parents first and foremost need to love and respect each other. Secondly, parents need to be in agreement on discipline issues and show a 'united front'. It is obviously hard to care for these babies and then return them. Do you put boundaries in place for yourselves? Yes. We have a break in between each placement and perhaps a holiday too. We need a little 'down time' to grieve the loss of a child we have loved. I think doing these things has enabled us to continue to foster for many years. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

ABOUT FOSTER CARE
Foster care is provided to children and young people who are unable to live with their own families. The need for foster carers from a broad range of backgrounds has never been more critical. Foster carers take on the responsibilities of a parent for a period of time for children or young people at risk of harm or neglect or because their parent or carer needs periodic relief to provide a safe, nurturing and secure family environment for children and young people needing care. a strong focus on reunifying the child with their birth parents or extended family.
Immediate or crisis care: Emergency placements are for children who need an urgent placement because there are concerns for their immediate safety.
Long-term: These are placements for longer than six months. Long-term or permanent care placements usually refer to situations where the child is not expected to return to their family.
Respite care: From time to time, parents and carers need a break from their caring role. Respite care is for short periods of time, eg. school holidays, weekends or for short periods during the week.
Relative or kinship care: Relative or kinship care is when a child or young person lives with a relative or someone they already know.
Short to medium-term care: These are placements up to six months in duration. Short to medium-term placements have

do a day trip - coffee trail
BY EDWINA HUNTER
A drive around the lower North Shore in the brand new Renault Clio was a perfect opportunity to hunt great for cafes situated near some of my favourite walks. The Clio has a young and very modern feel about it. Stylish good looks and wonderful curves grace the car’s exterior. Inside, the centre console’s bold colour scheme clearly targets the younger market. It offers media connectivity and a glossy LCD touch-screen. With the optional power pack you also get Bluetooth hands-free technology, a great sound system and integrated satellite navigation. The Clio certainly gives peace of mind with warning beeps indicating that you have drifted over the speed limit or that there are speed cameras ahead. It’s a small but spacious car with plenty of room to comfortably fit four people. The engine uses start/stop technology which helps to keep fuel emissions low. It operates at 4.5 litres per 100km so it’s very economical. Although the engine is on the small side, it’s all you need for city driving. Certainly a good way to get from A-B which suited my day!

DELICADO
CREMORNE POINT WALK
First stop was Delicado located on Blues Point Road, McMahons Point. Stop here to breathe in the very essence of Spain at a specialist tapas bar and Spanish restaurant. I grabbed my Spanish coffee and continued down the Road to soak in the harbour views.
My last hop was a small drive to Cremorne Point to Sophie's Place, a cafe right at the wharf. They make coffee and homemade muffins – perfect to takeaway with you on your walk. The path from Sophie’s follows the harbour shoreline. Take in panoramic ocean views, the bush, private gardens, and the famous Lex and Ruby Graham Garden along the shoreline. You will find signs along the walk explaining points of interest and benches at particularly scenic spots.
THE BOAT HOUSE, BALMORAL BEACH
Special thanks to Northshore Renault for providing the Clio for this edition’s day trip – it really was the perfect car to zip around in!
Next I zoomed over to The Boat House, located on the Esplanade along Balmoral Beach. This beachside cafe/ restaurant is well presented, like its sister cafe in Palm Beach. Fresh, modern Australian cuisine, rustic furnishings, interiors and an abundance of flowers complement a setting framed by stunning views over Middle Harbour. It’s a perfect place to stop with children with a playground just outside. It’s also lovely grabbing a coffee and walking along the Esplanade.

SEASIDE meets COUNTRYSIDE BY EDWINA HUNTER
It was Friday afternoon. I was heading three hours south towards Mollymook, to a coastal hideaway, Bannisters. Arriving that night, I was welcomed by reception and shown my room. As soon as I opened the door to my room I was confronted by the sea. I already felt settled into holiday mode. All 32 rooms have been newly renovated, each boasting a private balcony overlooking spectacular views, situated on the cliff tops of Mollymook - your private oasis.
First night was dinner at Tallwood, a short drive or 14 minute walk down the road from Bannisters. The welcoming waiter explained the menu’s style (designed for sharing) and the accompanying wine. It was innovative and fresh, including some wonderful combinations of ingredients - a Mollymook gem.
60
The next morning started with more panoramic ocean views with breakfast at Rick Stein at Bannisters. Presented with a yummy buffet and dishes such as: layered granola compote, huevos rancheros and the classic English breakfast.
Next, I had a wedding to attend. The service was held at Mollymook beach which was followed by the reception held at St Isidore in Milton, a restaurant situated on a large piece of land. I recommend taking the time to tour their gardens and walk around their stunning lake.
That night the wedding crew were led back to Bannisters to sip cocktails whilst watching the sunset at Bannisters’ Pool Bar. They offer great service as you lounge by the infinity pool with a great menu overlooking panoramic views of the Pacific.
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2014
The next day I was keen to further explore the area. First place I stopped at was Narrawellee Inlet: the perfect location if you have young children as it’s well protected and the water is not too deep. A play area is also available plus gas BBQs and tables. I recommend hiring a paddle board from Stand Up Paddle (available by the reserve).
Next stop was a short drive to Lake Conjola. Take the boardwalk for a pleasant 15 minute walk to the beach. Stop at the viewing platforms along the way for excellent panoramic views of both the beach and lake. As the area is extensive reserve land, you can take a day trip to Boyd Lookout.
www.livinglocalguide.com.au
BEYONDLocal Next stop was Bawley Point, an Aboriginal word meaning, "Brown snake". Well known throughout the region for its fine beaches and peak surf (some of the best) conditions. There are plenty of other beaches where you can swim, picnic or simply watch kangaroos enjoying the surf.
That night was dinner at Rick Stein at Bannisters. Greeted by welcoming staff and presented with a menu of beautifully fresh
seafood with imaginative flavours. Rick Stein believes that fresh seafood should speak for itself and it really did. Again, on top of this you’re complimented by beautiful 180 degree views.
The next day was home day. Before starting my trip I stopped off in Milton to buy a coffee and fresh juice from Pilgrims Vegetarian Cafe. It’s a must-go-to offering healthy breakfasts with a casual, trendy ambience.
Overall it was a great trip. I call it seaside meets countryside as it offers the best of both worlds. A big thank you to Bannisters who made my trip extra special. It was a great stay and I felt spoilt with the views, location and room - an excellent coastal getaway!

TEACHER TRAINING SUCCESS BY RICHARD JACKSON The Nepal Schools Project is all about improving education for remote disadvantaged communities in one of the world’s poorest countries. So it is no surprise that Anne Prescott, with her passion for Maths education, has emerged in recent years as a key member of the Nepal Schools Project team. Dr Prescott BA MSc MEd PhD DipEd is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education in the Centre for Research in Learning and Change at the University of Technology, Sydney. Anne first became involved with the project when, as a member of the Rotary Club of Wahroonga, she joined the January 2011 Rotary sponsored teacher training team. She has since returned twice, including to lead a teacher training team last month, and will return again in January 2015. This continuity in, and reinforcement of, the teacher training program compounds its effectiveness and Anne reports real improvement in the skills of the Nepali teachers and students, most clearly in English language. This year’s team of nine were 62
drawn from Anne’s past students at UTS. We always seek volunteers to undertake fundraising for school facilities and Anne’s team joined in enthusiastically. You may have encountered Anne’s tenacious raffle ticket selling skills last December outside Eastern Road Quality Meats, Turramurra! The fantastic team raised over $20,000 towards a new roof, toilets and furniture for Gandharki Secondary School. A special "thanks" to Anne and her team: James Mackintosh, Jenny Quinn, Katherine Ho, Melissa Dullege, Michael Laws, Ruo Yiu Liu, Simon Forbes and Yu Su.
BALUDAYA PRIMARY SCHOOL MAKEOVER Wahroonga residents Dympna and Warren Sly have been generous supporters of the project since first travelling to Nepal in 2001. They returned last year on the Charity Trek lead by Allan Waldon. Their special focus is Baludaya Primary School in Satdobata village. Perching on a razor sharp ridge, Satdobata is a magical place with majestic panoramic
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2014
views of Ganesh Himal to one side and mighty Manaslu to the other. The local community is strong with vigorous leadership from a number of retired British Army Ghurkhas. Dympna and Warren’s support has transformed the school. The most recent work included a new roof fitted with translucent panels to flood the classrooms with light. Their generosity and quiet encouragement have been a key factor in the ongoing success of the project and we greatly value and appreciate their involvement. Thank you!
ROTARY TOILETS When high altitude trekking and a dodgy curry intersect it can seem like the toilet is spinning but "Rotary Toilets" – built by Rotary International – definitely don’t move. Work has started on the construction of four school toilet blocks in the needy Gorkha District. The project was organised by funder Peter Kindred of the Rotary Club of Chatswood. Additional funding was provided by the Rotary Clubs of Wahroonga and Mt Everest Lalitpur in Kathmandu, together with a grant from the Rotary Foundation’s international headquarters in Chicago. But the Rotary Clubs are not resting on their laurels as negotiations have commenced on a second toilet construction. The bone bucket at Eastern Road Quality Meats is a great source of fundraising for Nepal. Thank you !

With so many good businesses on the North Shore we were privileged to beat the 250 other entries. CHRISTMAS Our superb Bangalow Sweet hams and selected free range turkeys received much praise. Our shop will have organic, completely chemical free turkeys, from Bairnsdale in Victoria, ready again for Christmas this year. Definitely try our turkeys!

advantage to know who actually grows your food and how they grow it and so I have close personal contact with my growers. We truly care about them earning a viable living and we also care about how they treat their animals. DROUGHT APPEAL HERO Brendan Farrell, himself a farmer, heard about the struggle of farmers in Bourke NSW and wanted to help. The drought has crippled 60% of the state and continues its deadly toll. "There are so many variables but someone's got to do something because at the moment the suicide rate is so bad," Mr Farrell told SMH. So Brendan started the Burrumbuttock to Bourke Hay Run - where farmers from areas less affected donate hay and transport it to those badly affected. After a call to 2GB, it has gained momentum and inspired more generous donations of hay and money to pay for transport. After the success of the recent Burrumbuttock to Bourke Hay Run, organiser Brendan Farrell wants to hear from truck drivers who can cart the fodder from the Riverina to Bourke on April 4. So far the appeal has raised more than $1.5m and there is much more to do. To help Brendan and his team, contact Brendan through the Burrumbuttock to Bourke Hay Run Facebook page or via 'We’re for the Bush Appeal'. www.2gb.com/forthebush www.livinglocalguide.com.au

PROTECT YOUR GREATEST ASSET - you One of the most unpopular topics work for a period of time). in personal finance is the range of • Total and permanent disability insurance known as ''life products''. (aka TPD), which pays a lump sum No one wants to dwell on injury or death. However, look at it this way - life products are financial protection for your greatest asset. Ask someone about what that might be and they'll say their house, their share portfolio, their superannuation. But for most people, their greatest asset is actually their ability to generate income. And income is usually closely tied to wellbeing.
LIFE PRODUCTS INCLUDE: • Life insurance (a lump sum paid to your estate if you die). • Income continuance insurance (up to 75% of your income paid if injury or illness keeps you out of
if you can no longer work. • Critical illness insurance (aka ''trauma''), which pays a lump sum if you're unable to work. Once you think about these insurances as financial risk rather than medical emergency, it becomes apparent why people take them out. If you can't work, who will generate the income for your family? If you die - leaving a mortgage and kids - what does your spouse do about the loan and all the other debts and obligations? Commonly, tradies think they can rely on workers' compensation and expect other claims to be covered by health insurance.
Many Australians think their employer will look after them and others assume there's a benefit at Centrelink. Anyone relying on this should seek out real information. And remember, you need to replace the income you're accustomed to - a large mortgage can't be paid on a disability pension and workers' comp is very tightly defined. Investigate your options, using experts when you need them. If you're still confused ask yourself this: if I insure my car for $20,000, what's my income worth? LUCKY YOU CLEANSE JUICE REVIEW 1 BY KATE COURTNEY-O'CONNOR, FREELANCE WRITER Before undertaking a cleansing program, it’s important that you speak with your health practitioner, especially if you have a medical condition. At the moment I am breast feeding my seven month old baby, so I went and saw my health professional first and was advised that in addition to the cleansing program, I could also have root veggies, rice or anything grown naturally. This was so that I could consume the right carbs that would also be taken in by my son. I chose the 3-Day Juice Cleanse, so here is my day-by-day diary of a Lucky You Cleanse Lady!
DAY 1: Morning: I was rushing out the door as usual and there (like a present from Santa in a well presented, green refrigerator bag) were my six juices freshly delivered. I imagined the case to be bigger and difficult to fit in, our already full fridge. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover they were reasonably compact in size (500ml). To make it easy for busy mums like myself 66
they were numbered. I stacked them in the fridge and they were good to go. I was ready to get juiced up! Afternoon: I'm enjoying the juices and as I am someone who drinks a lot of water, I am enjoying always feeling hydrated and nourished. I had the Spicy Lemonade (Juice 3) and it was a real zinger - watch out for that one!
DAY 2: Morning: I woke up in the best mood. No sleep deprived feeling this morning! As my skin usually reacts quickly to things, I also noticed this morning that my skin was already looking good, so I didn’t feel the need to apply much make-up on. Afternoon: I stocked up on some healthy ingredients and detox teas to help me continue being healthy post cleanse. I feel excited at the future. Making better choices of what I am putting into my body, keeping active and building a healthy lifestyle that benefits my family and me.
DAY 3: The Cleanse Effect
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2014
Morning: I woke without that hangover feeling from whatever I had eaten the night before and I feel good on the inside in a way that I have not experienced before. I feel well, nourished, my skin is as soft as my baby’s bum and my mindset is healthier for the future. Afternoon: No hunger, I feel completely satisfied (even after being on liquids for three days).
CONCLUSION: It has been a real life lesson for me about how much I am affected, both mentally and physically by what I am putting into my body. I need to be putting all the right things into place. I am certainly going to work harder at living a healthier lifestyle and this is an experience I will never forget. So thankful for being able to do it! Lucky You Cleanse certainly doesn’t do things in halves. If you have any queries, there is a section on the website (www. luckyyoucleanse.com.au) that answers common questions. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

COMMENTS ON THE INDIVIDUAL JUICES:
the rest of the day as it stood out and was quite different.
Shot to start the day - Elixir: Contained Aloe Vera. This one is to start the day right detoxifying and cleansing.
Juice 4 - Red Juice: Contained Beetroot, Cucumber, Celery, Spinach/Kale, Silverbeet, Cos Lettuce, Parsley, Green Apple and Lemon. I really enjoyed this one. I am a beetroot fan and found it to have the perfect amount of sweetness for my afternoon kick!
Juice 1 - Pineapple Smoothie: Contained Alkaline Water, Kale, Silverbeet, Spinach, Pineapple and Banana. Colour was green and consistency was thick. I love pineapple, so I really enjoyed starting the day with this one! A definite winner! Juice 2 - Green B Juice: Contained Green Apple, Cucumber, Celery, Spinach, Kale, Silverbeet, Cos Lettuce, Parsley and Lemon. This one followed nicely after the first one. Water-like consistency, yet sweet enough to cover up that small aroma of freshly cut grass. Juice 3 - Spicy Lemonade: Contained Alkaline Water, Lemon, Green Apple, Stevia, Cayenne Pepper, Celtic Sea Salt. This one is bitter and spicy. But don’t be put off. It’s really good for you and you do adjust to the taste. I found it useful in breaking-up the juices for

SALVAGE COFFEE COLD BREW Salvage Coffee Cold Brew is brewed by a method utilising full immersion as opposed to “cold drip” as some are used to brewing.
This allows greater control of the extraction and more of the natural flavours of the terroir and variety of the bean being carried through. Brewed and bottled on site in Artarmon. Best served over ice. Find them on Facebook: Salvage Specialty Coffee www.livinglocalguide.com.au
Juice 5 - Green A Juice: Contained Cucumber, Celery, Spinach/Kale, Silverbeet, Cos Lettuce, Parsley and Lemon. This was similar to Juice 2, however for some odd reason I did find it hardest to drink. Maybe my belly was probably in shock from taking in so much goodness. I am sure over time it’s something I could get use to. Juice 6 - Cashew Nut Milk: Contained Alkaline Water, Activated Raw Cashew Kernels, Medjool dates. I found this absolutely delicious. I love milk drinks, so this was by far my favourite to drink! You will look forward to it every night!

BEWARE of chocolate toxicity in your dog this Easter!
BY DR MARTINE PERKINS, BVSC(HONS) MRCVS, MACVS, PYMBLE VETERINARY CLINIC WHAT TO DO IF MY DOG HAS EATEN CHOCOLATE?
ARE SOME TYPES OF CHOCOLATE WORSE THAN OTHERS? Generally, the darker and more bitter the chocolate the more toxic it is! The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate:
It's important to make sure the Easter Bunny’s stash is hidden well away from your dog! Dogs love the sweet taste of chocolate and although rarely fatal it can make them significantly ill. WHAT MAKES CHOCOLATE TOXIC TO DOGS? Chocolate is toxic because it contains substances known as methylxanthines (specifically theobromine and caffeine). Theobromine is similar to caffeine and is used medicinally as a diuretic, heart stimulant, blood vessel dilator and smooth muscle relaxant. Humans can breakdown and excrete these methylxanthines much more efficiently than dogs.
• 2mg/g of methylxanthines in milk chocolate • 15mg/g of methylxanthines in baking/dark chocolate As little as 15g of dark chocolate and 100g of milk chocolate may be toxic to a 10kg dog however larger quantities of ingestion will result in more severe signs.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF CHOCOLATE TOXICITY? • Vomiting and diarrhoea • Hyperactivity • Tremors and even seizures • Increased heart rate • Increased body temperature • Advanced signs can be cardiac failure, weakness, coma and ultimately death.
If your dog has ingested chocolate it is best to get him to your veterinarian so they can ascertain the amount of chocolate per kilogram of bodyweight and whether your dog may be at risk of toxicity. The sooner you get your pet to a veterinarian the better as vomiting can be induced quickly if necessary, helping to prevent absorption and toxicity. If too late then hospitalisation and supportive care may be necessary whilst the effects of the theobromine are active in your dogs system. It can take up to 4 days for complete resolution. It will be a far less invasive and lengthy veterinary visit if your pet gets immediate attention. Try to estimate the quantity your dog has eaten and bring any packaging along with you. Have a safe and Happy Easter with your furry friends this year!

WALK WITH TARONGA’S LEMURS THIS EASTER Lemur keepers at Taronga are preparing to welcome groups of visitors inside the Zoo’s new Lemur Forest Adventure exhibit at Easter. It is planned that groups of visitors will be able to walk through the Lemur exhibit between 11.15am and 4.00pm daily, following the path right beside the trees, rocks and climbing structures where the lemurs are leaping and walking. Lucky visitors may even see a Ring-tailed Lemur stepping along the climbing ropes like a tightrope walker, using their striking striped tail to balance. 70
The Lemur Forest Adventure replicates the lemurs’ natural habitat on the island of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa. This modern and interactive exhibit includes a forest path and a custom-built playground with complex climbing structure, designed to allow young visitors to climb just like lemurs.
These school holidays are also the last chance to see Taronga’s largest public outdoor sculpture trail, Taronga Wild! Rhinos, through the streets of Sydney’s CBD, outer suburbs and as far as Cowra and Dubbo in the Central West. A huge herd of 125 wildly colourful rhino sculptures have been created by well-known artists, schools and community groups to help raise awareness of the critical plight facing rhinos through poaching and habitat loss. YOURHome to plant a tree, all green life is beneficial to our health and wellbeing so the more plants we have around us the happier we will be. Autumn is the optimum time to get planting, as the air and soil temperatures are just right and the roots have enough time to establish themselves before winter arrives. Dig some composted cow manure through your garden beds that are exhausted by the summer heat to give your new plants the best start to see them through until Springtime.

SECURING A HEALTHY FUTURE BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS GARDEN CENTRE “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” There are increasing concerns amongst Australians that our urban green spaces are under threat so a national initiative has recently been launched with the title 202020 Vision. The aim is to increase urban green space in our cities by 20% by the year 2020 in a bid to improve air quality, reduce pollution, improve commercial productivity, cool our cities naturally and combat the lack of community spaces. The need for inter-industry collaboration is of paramount
importance and so far there are over 20 advocates and upwards of 50 partner organisations who have already committed to this vision – including government bodies, commercial developers, academics and most importantly the horticultural industry. Whilst the Nursery and Garden Industry Australia – the association of which Elegant Outdoors is a member – is playing its part in this huge campaign to green-up our cities, here in the suburbs we can contribute in a somewhat smaller but still very important and significant way.
