Now thanks to Aspire you can have all the fun that makes a gap year what it is whilst making the time count towards your degree. It will be a year of fun, sun, sand, ocean and making friends and it’s also a year of purpose that gets you into the 2nd year at University. The latest edition of Living Local has again highlighted the many wonderful local attractions and businesses. The What's On page gives you a snapshot of a couple of events well worth a visit. I especially look forward to hearing about and supporting local activities. Jocelyn - Gordon

What I like about this spring edition of Living Local are the many informative and interesting articles for example 'From Boys to Men' and 'Memories of Bobbin Head'. I like all of the articles and advertisements about the approaching Summer coming. All in all, Living Local is a great little magazine that I always look forward to coming out. Thank you. Caroline - North Turramurra

Thank you for the concise magazine on a wide variety of topics for those people who live out of the area but frequent the Upper North Shore numerous times during a week. Knowing the businesses in this area is the first step in visiting them. Julie - Cherrybrook

Usually focusing on the wonderful wonders, I love Living Local's Spring edition because it features 'real' superheroes in 'Raising communities out of poverty'! It's beautiful! Melissa - Tahmoor

APP REVIEWS BY BRANDON COWAN, APP DEVELOPER - CRAZY DOG APPS

GIF KEYBOARD “GIF’s can now be sent on iPhone” It is well known that Apple seems to enjoy restricting our freedom when it comes to customizing our iPhones and iPads. Simple things like setting your ringtone to a custom song is incredibly technical and far from easy on iPhone. Few people even know that you can do it. When Apple released iOS 8 a few months back, they also loosened their previously tight grip on keyboard customization. Apple started to allow developers to create custom keyboards and submit them as apps to the App Store. Whilst this has brought hundreds of custom keyboard apps to the App Store, I came across one that was particularly cool. As the name suggests GIF Keyboard allows you to send GIF’s (a single picture which consists of several pictures that are displayed repeatedly one after another) via a custom keyboard, after downloading the app. Instead of sending tiny emoji pictures or sending ‘normal’ pictures, GIF Keyboard is a great way to bring your messages to life. The developers claim to have access to over 1 million GIF’s and they even have a search feature for them. Pretty cool, I know… GIF Keyboard is available to download for free on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

EMERGENCY + “A potentially life-saving app” There are only really two features of this app but they could potentially save lives. They are the ability to call 000 or SES and view your location. It’s easy enough to call 000 in an emergency

10

situation but often we don’t know the address of where we are. Or if you are like me and you have no sense of direction, you might not know what suburb you are in. Emergency + shows your location in both latitude/ longitude form and it also shows the exact address of where you are at and it appears to update every second. The latitude/longitude feature is useful if you are in an emergency situation and you are in a remote area, such as the bush. It’s an app that all bushwalkers, skiers, snowboarders (and I’m sure I’ve missed lots of other sports) should have! Emergency + is available for free for iPhone and Android but based on the reviews of the Android app, there may be issues with it.

COMMBANK “Bank more easily, anywhere, anytime” For those of us that are with the Commonwealth Bank, this is one convenient app. It lets you view your account balance, transfer money between accounts and pay people with just a few taps of your Smartphone. The app is secured by a pincode, just like when you withdraw money from an ATM. One of the latest and innovative features of the CommBank app is the ability to withdraw up to $200 in cash from most CommBank ATM’s without a card. It even lets a friend get the money for you! In the Commbank app, you just enter the amount of money that you’d like to withdraw and you get a code to enter at a Commonwealth Bank ATM. When entered, you receive the money, without the need for a bank card. CommBank is available for free on iPhone, Android and Windows phone and similar apps are available for other banks.

would grow up to give his life away and then conquer death to give us a hope that nothing can break. Long before we had even begun to ask whether there was still any hope, Jesus was already on his way to us. Christmas tells us that God comes to find us no matter where we are. When everything has come to a dead end, then this gift of hope has only just begun. Come celebrate our hope together this Christmas. www.standys.org.au

This news of hope couldn’t come at a better time. This world is running low on hope. We, our world, our nation, our families, ourselves, we need hope – that won’t disappoint or fade. We need a hope that can anchor our lives no matter what. Here is the wonder of Christmas.

Hope, our only hope was born on Christmas day! On Christmas day our God walks into this world with a tiny gift – a baby, Jesus, his son, our hope, who is strong enough to carry us all. As C. S. Lewis (author of the Narnia series) once wrote: 'once in our world, a stable held something in it that was bigger than our whole world.' In our hearts we know there is something wonderful about Christmas. Here with this gift in a stable, is our hope. This baby

$36,000 CHRISTMAS PRESENT BY MARK LEWIN, CFP ® FINANCIAL PLANNER We have been located in Pymble now for 5 years and have been quite surprised with the poor financial planning practises that clients have presented to us. It begs the questions "do you need a review of your existing financial plan and are the fees you are paying a reflection of the services that you are receiving?" Husband and wife, David and Sue (not their real names) had more than $500,000 in a super fund controlled by a major Australian institution and their previous financial planner had not contacted them in over 5 years. They accepted a review by us of their circumstances and have since become clients and have saved over $4,000 a year in superannuation administration fees to name just one of the benefits a review can offer. 14

Retired couple, Brendan and Sally who had not heard from their financial planner in over 2 years also became clients of our practice when we demonstrated the excess investment risk that their previous portfolio contained. It was the type of risk many held in super funds just prior to the global financial crisis. Bill is a senior executive and came to see us thinking we only offered "investment advice" but soon found himself $36,000 better off (two days before Christmas). We helped him successfully claim back income protection insurance premiums that he had been inadvertently paying for the previous 5 years. All of these cases point to the undeniable fact that a thorough investigation of a client’s circumstances by our practice

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

usually uncovers the mistakes and inefficiencies that prevail in our industry. For the past 20 years, we have made it our focus to ask all the right questions that will result in a financial plan tailored and customised to our client’s needs. Ask yourself these 5 questions: 1. On an annual basis do you know exactly how much in fees you are paying your financial planner? 2. When was the last time you compared your existing insurance premiums to the market? 3. Have you had the risk in your portfolio thoroughly explained to you? 4. There are over 5,000 managed funds offered in Australia, does your financial planner have access to the majority of them? 5. Does your financial planner arrange an annual review meeting on your behalf & properly review your investments (portfolio construction), insurance policies (risk management) and wills & powers of attorney (estate planning)? If you cannot answer these questions then call us on 8007 6244 to organise a no obligation review of your financial plan.

Wildflowers:

KU-RING-GAI’S BOTANICAL HISTORY

BY ROBERT C. JOHNSTON, WRITER AND RESEARCHER Summer is a great time to get out and explore the history of one of Ku-ring-gai’s best kept secrets. Nestled along the northern side of Mona Vale Road, just as you round the corner leading up to St. Ives Showground, is the beautiful Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden.

over without being noticed." In 1925, part of the site was considered for the proposed Gordon to Narrabeen railway line. In the early 1960s there was a push to preserve the 123 hectare site as a public garden, with the aim of protecting native plants and wildlife and to bring visitors to the local area.

throughout the year. During my exploration, I was particularly struck by the beauty of the White Kunzea and red Bottlebrush. In summer expect to see NSW Christmas Bush.

WHITE KUNZEA (KUNZEA AMBIGUA) THE GARDEN ENTRANCE OFF MONA VALE ROAD

It is positioned near "The First Rocks" – what historically denotes the end of the plateau country westward and the start of the rock-strewn hilly country heading east to the sea. For eons this area, traditionally the territory of the Guringai people, has been a place of natural, rugged beauty; the ancient Hawkesbury sandstone provides a fine frame on which to drape a rich haven of native plants and wildlife.

KANGAROO PAW, NATIVE TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA

In 1968 the garden and pavilion was officially opened by Sir Roden Cutler VC. Only a few weeks later a fire swept through and destroyed the whole area, fortunately sparing the buildings. Other fires have affected the site over the decades. As fire is an ecological requirement of many native plants, the garden is allowed to regenerate naturally and is helped along by hard yakka.

Christmas Bush was used in the early years of the Sydney colony as a red and green festive floral decoration in place of the familiar but unavailable holly and ivy. It has since become our Australian tradition.

NSW CHRISTMAS BUSH (CERATOPETALUM GUMMIFERUM). PAINTING BY EDWARD MINCHEN, 1895

Botanist and explorer George Caley, the first European recorded to visit the site in 1805, remarked that, "every inch of ground I consider to be sacred and not to be trampled 16

For those in for a challenge, some of the tracks are quite long and have some steep sections. Ensure that you carry water with you and that your footwear is adequate. The tracks are well signposted and printed maps (available near the pavilion) are easy to follow. Signs describe the terrain difficulty, duration, flora and fauna to be expected on each track.

The pavilion can be hired for private functions and its Bushland Education Centre hosts bush experiences, talks and walks for kids and adults. Numerous bushwalking tracks snake through the site. Each track is named after an Australian botanical pioneer: names such as Banks, Caley, Solander and Mueller – some of whom have BOTTLEBRUSH (CALLISTEMON) been immortalised in the scientific The garden is a wonderful names of certain plant species. location for a picnic. If your visit is like mine, you may glimpse the flitter of a spectacular bird darting between trees. You may hear the bush rustle as a swamp wallaby hops by or even catch one grazing with a joey in its pouch. Some tracks are flat and sealed, specifically designed for bicycles or joggers. Others feature raised boardwalks to provide wheelchair and stroller access, allowing less mobile explorers to experience the beautiful bush surrounds. Bordering each side of the garden are Ku-ring-gai Creek and Tree Fern Gully Creek. Walking tracks roughly follow the ancient routes these wend.

Hot Spots for

Summer

As summer rolls in, it’s time to find shady spots and places to cool down for you and your little ones. Visit the newly renovated Wahroonga Park. It’s a hit with a flying fox, two different slides, outdoor musical instruments and plenty of swings for all ages. Coffee and shops are close by, and the large shade sails and seating make the play area a great place to sit and enjoy lunch. The new playground is also fully enclosed, which will add to parents' peace of mind knowing that their children can’t suddenly run out onto the road. Just up the highway and opposite Warrawee Bowling Club you can find the cute little Curtilage Park, a brand new space just opened this year. Nestled in between two heritage listed properties, it provides lovely play equipment and a safe bike track for the kids. I also love wandering up the back of the park to catch a glimpse of the historic art deco Mahratta house. Mahratta house also offers Garden or House tours for those who want to explore further. There’s also West Pymble’s Bicentennial Park. It has a great bike track, a couple of challenging hills, play equipment, as well as an oval for kicking a ball around. But the best thing is its newly reopened pool. It has plenty of grass for relaxing with the family, four different pools, each with its own attributes, and a cute water play area which the kids will love. The park also offers electric BBQ’s and undercover picnic tables. Speaking of water play, if you head off the North Shore you can find some great wet playgrounds. My favourite is Putney Park, with its two connected wading pools and a large slide for the older kids. Views from the park look out over the Parramatta River, and you can watch the boats go by while the kids splash in the water and dig in the huge sand pit. Definitely one to check out this summer. I hope you find your favourite hot spots.

EASTERN ROAD QUALITY MEATS BY ALLAN WALDON, EASTERN ROAD QUALITY MEATS We are constantly breeding and producing better products at the farm, the cattle are looking fantastic and our sheep have improved out of sight in the last few years. We love the paddock to plate, knowing every part of the process and this year we have won medals in recognition of our efforts. With entries from all over Australia, we were over the moon with the results at this year’s Sydney RAS Fine Food Show. We were the only butcher shop that won gold medals for gourmet lamb and chicken products. The lamb was from our farm and received the most prestigious award we could hope for. Our farm breed lambs won gold for Lamb Sausages and Gourmet Lamb for flavour and taste. This year we also won the only gold medal sausage in the Tasmanian Food Show.

Christmas Trimmings At Eastern Road Quality Meats we have jumped right into summer and already looking around the corner at Christmas.

Turkey We have all you need for Christmas including genuine, free-range, Leadoux fresh turkeys. Sydney's only supplier. These quality birds are from a small farm where animal welfare is top priority. We are committed to getting the very best products from small caring producers. We will also have our ever popular turkey festive breast, a boned rolled season whole breast of turkey, easy to cook and serve and very moist. A real hit with everyone.

The Bangalow Sweet Hams are tasty and moist. Come in and have a taste for yourself. Cooked by Sydney’s best with some great glazes. Those who order a ham can come along on Sat Dec 13th 9:30am to our free open day in the shop. Learn how to prepare, glaze and cook a ham. These days, many companies sell blush and bronzer cream duos - the blush goes on cheeks and lips, the bronzer goes under the cheekbones, around the hairline and under your chin, and even a tiny bit on eyelids as your shadow. The cream formulation keeps things light and looks as though you hardly have makeup on at all. Perfect for touch ups on the go.

5. Get a nice smelling body lotion with a bit of shimmer in it. This is a great multi tasker to add glow, soothe skin after sun exposure and make you smell delicious, all at the same time. Who doesn't love that?

6. Fake it til you make it. Mix some fake tan into your moisturiser and pop it on with your usual skincare routine, making sure to blend it down onto your chest, and arms as well, if they're exposed. Most of us are a little paler in the face than the body, so this is a great way to get sneakily glowing and even toned by the end of the day.

7. Smell your way pretty. Last but not least, invest in a lighter alcohol free scent for summer, and put it in your hair. Perfume can actually accelerate sun damage if it's on exposed skin, so it's best to avoid wearing it on your neck in summer. Alcohol free versions let you feel gorgeous, without drying out your hair or damaging your skin.

CAN YOU PINPOINT YOUR SUCCESS TO A PARTICULAR MOMENT? There has never been a moment that I’ve thought, “I’ve made it,” because as anyone that knows me will tell you, I’m always striving to learn and improve! One of my proudest moments though would have to be opening our first store in the United States in 2012. I would never have imagined that a business that started in my dining room, making active wear for the women in my classes would turn into a global business with 170 Lorna Jane stores around the world! It just goes to show that if you have a dream and you are willing to work hard, great things really can happen.

WHAT’S THE MOST SURPRISING PART OF YOUR JOB? It would have to be the strong following of loyal customers we have developed over the years. Our customers are the culture and essence of Lorna Jane and their loyalty and support is incredible. What started out as a business about active wear is now a brand that inspires women all over the world to live their best life through our Active Living Philosophy – it truly motivates me to be and do my very best every single day!

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT THIS YEAR? Well, it’s more of a reminder than a lesson - but I am learning to be more ‘present’. When life gets chaotic I find myself thinking ahead too much, when I know that if I stay in the present moment and give each decision 100% of my attention then I actually feel better and achieve more.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU AND WHAT LEGACY DO YOU WISH TO LEAVE? I want to spread the Active Living philosophy all over the globe, and educate more and more women about just how fantastic they can feel when they move, nourish and believe, every day. This is the daily practice of moving your body every day, nourishing from the inside out and believing anything is possible and then being willing to work for it. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

WHAT’S YOUR HOT TIP WHEN FACED WITH TOO MUCH TURKEY AND PUDDING THIS CHRISTMAS? Christmas is a time when I eat whatever my heart desires. But the key for me is to get right back to healthy eating when the holiday is over and to avoid over indulging in the lead-up to Christmas.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT IN FITNESS FASHION THIS SUMMER? As the weather warms up, our collections focus more heavily on shorts, loose fitting tanks and statement sports bras. Keep a look out for lots of cute shorts to show off your legs and relaxed-fit tanks with fun detailing in bright fruit-inspired shades like Dewberry, Dragon Fruit and Neon Lemon Sorbet.

The Mosman Bay Walk is one of my favourites with spectacular views and lots of spots to stop for a well-deserved picnic. 36

WHEN YOU VISIT SYDNEY WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE WALKS ON THE NORTH SHORE? The Mosman Bay Walk is one of my favourites with spectacular views and lots of spots to stop for a well-deserved picnic. If I’m feeling a little more adventurous, I love the Wondabyne to Kariong Brook Falls Hike – it’s very secluded and difficult to find, but it lets you escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney for a few hours.

FAVOURITE BEACH? Manly is one of my favourite beaches to visit when I’m in Sydney! We shoot a lot of our campaign shoots for Lorna Jane on Manly Beach!

WHAT’S ON YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST? Gosh to be honest, I haven’t really thought about that yet! A little late I know - but I would like a copy of Diane Von Furstenberg’s new book and possibly a longer vacation than usual.

What Are You Doing?

The Future Project

Empowering Young Women Since 1885

It’s the first question we ask when we wake up to ourselves. It doesn’t have to be asked in exasperation. The best way to ask it is with love, because then it’s a life-changer. It lets us step back, mindfully aware of where we are, who we are and where we’re going. We start to look at things the right way up and then we can step forward with purpose, alive to the possibilities.

Future scientists are being nurtured in state-of-the-art school laboratories where they are doing real work alongside real scientists.

Abbotsleigh focuses on creating the richest possible learning environment for its students.

Real philosophy begins with a heart-felt question like this and then it carries on by giving you the means to teach yourself. The School of Philosophy runs an 11week course on Mindful Wisdom which gives you a chance to reask the sorts of questions we’ve all asked at some time or another. Who am I? What does it mean to be mindful? What is it to be wise? The mindfulness of practical philosophy simplifies life, bringing clarity, understanding and decisiveness to our thoughts and actions. Courses from 2nd February 2015. practicalphilsophy.org.au 02 9489 4333 42

The $20 million Science Centre at The King’s School is like no other in an Australian school. With 25 student interns passing through the first year of The Future Project, more are clamouring to be accepted for the second year. The inspiration behind the Future Project is its Project Director Roger Kennett, who worked hard to share his vision and find partners for the project. Student Clement Chiu, 15, said working on the project has convinced him to follow his dream of studying medicine. "This has given me a good foundation for future studies." Michelle Bull a Researcher with Vitramed, who specialises in gastro-intestinal research, said her company "could not believe" they were being offered the chance to work in a new, purpose-built laboratory, alongside science students.

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

At Abbotsleigh, size is important. We are big enough to offer a wide variety of programs, but small enough to offer personalised academic and pastoral care. Abbotsleigh honours its students’ individual differences and believes that exposure to a broad and balanced curriculum is key to ensuring well-rounded development. An extensive Service-Learning program fosters an enriched sense of social responsibility in each student. Every year Abbotsleigh achieves outstanding results in the NAPLAN testing and the HSC. Girls are regularly nominated and selected for OnSTAGE, Artexpress, DesignTECH and ENCORE. The School’s new sports precinct will be ready for use in Term 2, 2015, offering students access to wonderful new facilities including three indoor multi-purpose courts, a fitness studio and two teaching rooms. abbotsleigh.nsw.edu.au 02 9473 7777 www.livinglocalguide.com.au

KING’S MOUNTAIN BIKE CLASSIC 2014 BY LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE The second annual King’s Mountain Bike Classic was held on November 2, in the grounds of The King’s School. Former Knox Grammar student Jacob Van Egmond was the male champion of the 2014 King’s Mountain Bike Classic and Ameena Rabe was the Open Female Solo winner. Cadel Evans, the 2011 Tour de France champion, officially opened the track last year with the event drawing 100 participants. This year, the gruelling two-hour race had 115 participants competing from 13 schools. It’s easy to see why this competitive bike race is becoming the premier mountain bike race event for NSW school communities, with a purpose built 4.6km course through the bush, multiple race categories for both male and female riders and 44

a terrific focus on family fun. The race includes solo riders and two person teams. The team category is a relay-style race. Team riders must hand over to the other rider in the team after each lap. As soon as a solo rider completes a lap, or both riders in the case of a team, the time counts and is valid in the final results. Teams can be made up of two mates, father and son, husband and wife, brother and sister or other combination. All participating school students receive points towards determining the overall champion school. Team winners were Scott Reynolds and Max Mammone from Thomas Hassall Anglican College, near Hoxton Park, but close second were the King’s boys Max Lindsay and Andrew Mahler. For King’s team members Max, 16, and Andrew, 17, the race was doing what they have loved

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

since first hopping onto bikes as youngsters. Andrew, in Year 11, first got a taste of high-speed bike riding, racing his BMX around his grandfather’s Dural property as “a young boy". "Riding my BMX gave me great endurance training, and taught me about control, so it was natural to progress to mountain bikes," Andrew said. "I have recently started to use cleats, which has helped me to go even faster." For Max, in Year 10, the exhilaration of riding fast with the wind whipping his face sets mountain bike racing apart from other sports. "It was pretty exciting coming second after running fourth last year," Max said. Other results from the event: The school solo winners were Ollie Brouwers from The Scots College and Iona Reynolds from Thomas Hassall Anglican College and the winners of the Open Team of Two Female Riders was Lisa McHarg and Liz Bennet. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Without Words Week Without Words is a fundraising and awareness campaign for the 95% of children at St Lucy's who struggle to speak due to conditions like dyspraxia, autism or cognitive difficulties. Margie Abbott chose to participate for 24 hours. "I chose to become involved with Week without Words to develop my understanding of the difficulties children face when they are unable to easily use words to express their needs, their ideas and their emotions. I decided to try to go about my day normally, including going to work. From the outset I knew this was not going to be easy, as I work in early childhood education where ones words are

vital tools for teaching, guiding and shaping a day. St Lucy’s team gave me a variety of visual props to use such as an iPad enabling me to select words, pictures or images that “talk” and with some basic sign language the day flew! I now have a better understanding of the challenges children experience when unable to express themselves for whatever reason. It is often these

frustrations that can develop into a range of challenging social and emotional behaviours. This understanding puts educators like myself in a better position to support the child and their family. Finally, as a member of a community it is important to be able to reach out to others, to ‘walk in their shoes’. This experience has given me that opportunity and I am grateful for that." Margie Abbott.

TURRAMURRA HIGH’S "INSIDE OUT" PROJECT BY JENNI WRAY Turramurra High School is putting the finishing touches on something quite extraordinary in their school grounds. They have brought the whole community together to create an inspirational outdoor learning environment known as the "Inside Out" Project. Students, staff and parents have contributed to the design of the open-air area and through participation in fundraising events there is a shared ownership and pride in the project by Turramurra High School’s whole community. "We wanted to build an extraordinary open-air area that would be stimulating and engaging with spaces for our students to work individually as well as collaboratively," said Turramurra High School Principal, Stephanie McConnell. The "Inside Out" Project will accommodate up to 90 students 48

at one time and will be available to all subject areas. "Inside Out" is literally about taking the classroom outside but metaphorically, it is also about turning our ideas of traditional teaching and learning "Inside Out". The construction of the project involved excavating an area in the school grounds, followed by the building of a number of features including a sandstone amphitheatre, outdoor kitchen, seating areas, an outdoor chess board and garden beds. Local community groups have been a part of the project with the Ku-ring-gai Community Workshop (known as "The Shed") building seating, the Turramurra Lookout Community Garden helping to plan the vegetable gardens and representatives from the Rotary Club of Turramurra helping out on the school’s planting day, to name just a few. Turramurra Community Bank®

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

Branch is proud to be working in partnership with Turramurra High School and the community to ensure that the project is a success. The school’s P&C have donated $50,000 towards the project and the Turramurra Community Bank® has put in place a $75,000 interest free loan. This doesn’t cover all the costs so more fund raising is planned. "The Turramurra Community Bank® Branch loves to be involved with community projects like this one at Turramurra High School. Giving back to the community is an integral part of our bank’s philosophy and the more people that support us, the more we are able to contribute to exciting endeavours like the "Inside Out" Project," said Denice Kelly, Turramurra Community Branch Manager. Turramurra High School is inviting individuals to become a part of the project by making a gift of $80 (including GST) that will be recognised by the provision of an embossed paver that will be engraved with the donor’s name or message that will be installed as part of the "Inside Out" learning environment. You can pick up an order form from Turramurra Community Bank® Branch at 1273 Pacific Highway, Turramurra or from the school and orders can be placed up until the end of the first week in January 2015. For more information and to view the project's plans please visit Turramurra Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank or email turramurra@bendigobank. com.au or visit www. turramurrahighschool.com.au www.livinglocalguide.com.au

YOURHealth We all know that high sugar diets contribute to numerous other health conditions, like diabetes and obesity, so a good oral hygiene routine that includes an awareness about sugar consumption will not only benefit your teeth but your whole body as well. Countless studies have proven the link between sugar consumption and tooth decay. The reason is that sugar is used as food by bacteria in the mouth which produces acid. This acid then dissolves the enamel of the tooth, in other words, it decays the tooth. Good oral hygiene will ensure that the number of bacteria sitting on the tooth surface is minimised but there are a couple of other things to keep in mind with relation to sugar. Some sugars are worse for teeth than others. The fructose and sucrose that are found in a lot of soft drinks and juices are readily used by bacteria and therefore potentially harmful for teeth, whereas BY DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMED SCI, BDENT (HON) other sugars such as lactose, which is found in milk, have been found to be less harmful. As this issue of Living Local is dedicated to health, I As I have discussed in previous articles, periodontal thought it was appropriate to discuss some of the oral disease has been linked with numerous systemic health practices that can help to keep both our mouths conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and can and bodies healthy. affect aspects of pregnancy. A good oral hygiene routine of brushing for two minutes twice a day, flossing daily and having regular check-ups will ensure that there is a reduced risk of dental complications.

As our understanding of medicine advances, we are discovering that areas of the body rarely work in isolation and that the various parts of the body are in a delicate balance with one another. This also applies to the oral cavity and it is becoming clearer that a healthy mouth will contribute to an overall state of good health. THE EQUILIBRIA PROPOSAL TO ENHANCE NORTHCONNEX BY LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE NorthConnex will be the longest road tunnel project in Australia. It is planned as a tolled motorway linking the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. The link between the M1 and the M2 is recognised as important infrastructure for freight traffic and the wider connectivity within NSW to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow along Pennant Hills Road. Equilibria has proposed a viable alternative which is yet to be considered despite the local community group CAPS (Community Against Polluting Stacks) submitting a 10,769 signature petition on the 3rd November to Ku-ring-gai state Liberal MP Barry O’Farrell in Parliament. Doctors Against Pollution group is joining in support for an alternative to the current design 52

noting it poses serious risks to health for two groups - tunnel users and communities around the emission stacks. In an unusual situation, the emissions stacks are being placed in the center of residential suburbs - Wahroonga and West Pennant Hills, where unfiltered pollutants will be released into the air. Of great concern are the 9,300 school children in established schools in Wahroonga such as Abbotsleigh, Knox Grammar School, Wahroonga Bush School and multiple pre-schools, who will breathe pollutants on a daily basis. Tunnel users will also be exposed to a buildup of pollutants to hazardous levels - especially in the event of any traffic jam situation. Since the NorthConnex tunnel is designed for heavy freight trucks with diesel engines, a large volume of diesel engine gases

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

and particles will be emitted from the stacks. Diesel vehicles emit small particles (which contain heavy metals such as lead and arsenic), which deposit into lung tissue permanently, causing irreversible damage, inflammation, cancer and asbestos-like disease over a period of time. The Doctors Against Pollution group was formed to engage with the community and medical organisations about the health risks of air pollution. A vast body of medical research, published over the last 10 - 20 years, places diseases from air pollutants in a similar category to disease from cigarette smoking. These include increased risks of heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, asthma attacks, and poor lung development in children. Due to the strong associations with lung cancer and bladder cancer, "diesel vehicle emissions" have been classified as a Group 1A carcinogen (cancer causing) by the World Health Organisation. Of great concern to the medical community is that children are more vulnerable to air toxins they breathe faster, inhale more toxins, spend time outdoors and have growing lung tissue. Newer research also suggests impacts in pregnant women similar to smoking in pregnancy - low birth weight babies, premature babies, autism, and children with birth defects. These are areas of ongoing research, however they still represent significant issues to public health. Independent experts presented the health risks at a forum organised on September www.livinglocalguide.com.au

YOURHealth 4 at Barker College. The forum was covered by the ABC 7.30 Report program on September 5th. The medical group has made representations to local politicians for their consideration of alternative tunnel design options that will be critical to safeguard health for generations of residents and school children.

A Horizontal Tunnel Means Minimal Emissions From All Vehicles The Equilibria Proposal would enhance the NorthConnex M1-M2 Tunnel by extending the tunnel by approximately 1km. As the M1 falls downhill north of the Pacific Highway, a horizontal tunnel can join the M1 on grade, with minimum vehicle emissions. The smoke stack would be close to the Hornsby industrial area, not immediate to the residential area in Wahroonga. The redundant M1 land would be rezoned for a sustainable urban development.

The Equilibria Proposal is a viable alternative to the current proposal as it delivers benefits such as: • Less pollution because all vehicles will be driving the flat road • The extension to the tunnel would be cost effective due to economies of scale from existing construction setup • NSW Government receives capital return on sale of redundant M1 land • The pollution stack would be located adjacent to Hornsby industrial area, not immediate to Wahroonga residential area • Spring Gully Creek riparian zone, currently adjacent to the M1 would be protected, not destroyed • No Wahroonga resident would be forced out of their home • Provision of additional 2000 dwellings for Sydney within walking distance of a train station

LOCATION OF EMISSION STACKS IN HORNSBY INDUSTRIAL AREA

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

An analysis of the effect of gradient on pollution emission for each of the above cross sections was undertaken by Environ, using the 'Air Quality Appraisal Tool' (AQAT) from Pacific Environment Limited. The results illustrate the comparative emissions between the NorthConnex Tunnel and the Equilibria (extended and predominantly horizontal tunnel) Proposal. These results clearly show that improving tunnel alignment by reducing gradients to a minimum can reduce emissions by up to 50%. North Shore Local Business Keeping Seniors Safe at Home Instead North Shore senior care company Home Instead is helping keep seniors safe at home with their latest public education booklet – Making Home Safer for Seniors. The free booklet includes a number of simple home safety solutions, a home safety checklist and information on where seniors can access home maintenance and modification support. Research has shown that every year, one in three Australians aged 65 years and over and living in their own home will have a fall. Making Home Safer for Seniors provides practical solutions to help safeguard seniors’ health and independence. It also shares a range of ideas for creating a 56

more comfortable and practical senior home environment. Debbie Quirk, Director of Home Instead Senior Care North Shore & Northern Beaches says 90% of Australian seniors want to remain in the comfort of their own home rather than institutionalized care. However, the majority of seniors haven’t taken any steps to prepare their homes for their changing needs, as they grow older. “It is important that your home is, and remains, a safe, healthy and practical living environment for as long as possible. For families and seniors, it’s critical to invest the time in identifying the necessary home safety solutions, maintenance and modifications to ensure it

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

stays that way,” says Debbie. The most common issues found in seniors’ homes are trip hazards, a lack of assistive equipment, such as grab bars in bathrooms, and storage that is too high or too low. Home Instead Senior Care recommends a thorough safety check of senior homes annually. "An annual safety check can help prevent an assortment of home hazards, threatening seniors’ ability to continue living at home," Debbie said. Preventable home hazards, such as throw rugs, slippery floors or loose railings, can be particularly harmful, leading to falls and injuries that can threaten a seniors’ ability to live at home independently. Debbie says, "Home Instead CAREGivers are trained to identify and remedy any potential risks to senior safety, minimizing the risk for slips, trips, falls and other accidents in and around the home. When we go into homes, we see a lot of red flags that are easily overlooked by those who are familiar with the home. If something needs fixing, replacing or installing, we can help coordinate and supervise home maintenance and modification jobs for seniors. More often than not, these are relatively easy and affordable fixes - and could make the difference between a trip to the emergency room and staying safe at home, instead." THE RISING TIDE OF OFFENCE BY TINA VARTIS, FREELANCE WRITER We live in an increasingly intolerant and overly sensitive society where people take offence over the slightest expression of criticism, insult, ridicule, unflattering comparison or truth. Feelings are hurt and people resort to name-calling and demonising each other to the extent that in the wider community there are now laws created to protect people’s feelings by silencing the speech of those whose views are subjectively deemed as offensive. What has happened to our relationships and our culture that demands instant retribution for hurt feelings? Why has taking offence become the new moral high ground, a new virtue and practicing civility a vice? Hurt feelings are a part of life. There will always be people in our lives that will say and do 58

things that are blunt, insensitive, disagreeable, unpleasant and unkind. Sometimes people will even confront us with uncomfortable truths that offend us. Though we can’t control what others say, we can choose how we will respond to them. There is no ‘right’ to not being offended instead we all have a responsibility to deal with our own emotions in an appropriate manner. We need to navigate our way from an immature, selfcentred, controlling approach that demands that others think, act and say as we do and move towards a mature approach that recognises that others are allowed the freedom to be different, even if we don’t like what they say. So what can we do to become more resilient from taking offence? When people are

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

offended they can feel powerless, devalued, depressed, defensive and angry. There is a sense that they or their views are somehow diminished. It’s important to emotionally detach yourself from other people’s opinions of you and your ideas. Their thoughts do not devalue your identity. Criticism fails or succeeds not on some notion of whether it was appropriate or not but rather on the truth of what was said. Unless proven otherwise, assume the person in question had no ill intent with their comments. Clumsy or ill-advised word usage does not equate to malicious motive or intent. Accept that people are imperfect and will not meet your expectation of who you think they should be. Forgive past mistakes. Let go of the need to always be right and remember that we all have flaws.

Though we can’t control what others say, we can choose how we will respond to them. Taking offence is a choice. Acting detrimentally on a sense of entitled rage over being offended causes unnecessary division. Instead lets raise, teach and mentor the next generation that hurt feelings can be overcome without resorting to name-calling, rejecting, isolating, demonising others we are in relationship or legislating passage to get our own way at the expense of others. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

WEIGHT TRAINING FOR WOMAN “Weight training” – a couple of words that often instil a little fear into women - or triggers a nervous laugh! The fear that weight or resistance training will make women ‘bulky’ or masculine is one of the biggest misconceptions in the health and fitness industry that needs to be squashed. I am seeking to prove to any fearful women out there that this is but a misconception in two ways: 1) The physiological science behind and benefits of weight training for women: Metabolism: What does this funny word really mean? Your metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns energy (ie. food). What if I said that you could eat more and still keep the weight off? Muscle is an active tissue, which means it requires constant energy, whereas fat requires nil. If you can build even a small amount of muscle, your body becomes more efficient! Doing a cardio session might burn a couple of hundred calories in an hour but what if building a small amount of muscle helped you burn an extra 100 calories a day for the rest of your life! Muscles: Men VS. Women: Muscle hardly exists without the presence of testosterone, let alone actually trying to build muscle without it. Why is this important to know? Men naturally have far more testosterone than women. So sweating over even the chance of becoming masculine looking is wasted energy! We’re talking a lot of weight training in order to accomplish that look. So instead, burn that sweat with your trainer, creating a leaner, stronger and more efficient you!

Why else should women weight train? The more muscle a person has, the greater their body’s natural immunity to disease is. Weight training has many benefits, it builds bone density which is critically important for women during and post menopause; it develops a stronger core, leading to less back pain and since muscle is denser than fat; it takes up less room in your body and the result when combined with an appropriate diet is beach body curves!

Kim Ward: "I like seeing the progress of the weights going up each week, testing what I can achieve and I like the way my toned body looks in clothes now. It also makes me feel like I am in more control of my body especially when my trainer helps me with my technique." Ann: "It has completely changed my posture, my focus, and the way I walk and feel. I can lift heavier shopping bags, my core is so much stronger and people now think I am in fact younger than I am."

SPRING INTO SUMMER Receive 4 extra PT sessions for just $7 when you start your new body program! Call St Ives 9440 3910 Call Wahroonga 9487 5543 By 28th February 2015!

2) How does building a leaner, fitter, more efficient you make you feel? I could quite happily tell you all the benefits of weight training for women till I’m blue in the face - you might be able to tell by now that this is something I’m passionate about! However, we do certain things because of how they make us feel, not always just because 'it’s good for me'. So, I asked a few ladies in our studio why they enjoy weight training and how it makes them feel: Annabel Bruckner: "I love how empowered the weight training has made me feel and how much it has changed my body shape. I can even do chin ups now!"

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Nadine Foley: "My muscles are more toned without being bulky making my body more feminine. I can wear the clothes I loved wearing when I was younger and feel that I look good which has given me more confidence in everything I do. I would encourage all women to do some form of weight training. You won’t end up looking like a bodybuilder, but you will be stronger, fitter and able to cope with whatever life throws at you - and it’s fun too!"

WEEKEND AWAY - Southern Highlands BY EDWINA HUNTER Situated 90 minutes south of Sydney, in idyllic Sutton Forest, is Peppers Manor House. Arriving on Friday night felt like being welcomed into a Jane Austen novel. The beautiful, well maintained grounds were blooming with flowers and a gorgeous country aroma. My room, the Highland Studio, was just as charming: plenty of space, cosy, quiet, filled with character, exuding old world country charm and overlooking a lush green garden which at the time had a couple enjoying an aperitivo.

That night I had dinner booked at their award winning restaurant, Katers. The ambiance was made complete with overhanging ceiling lights, dark chocolate carpets and luxurious wallpaper. It was much like I imagine dinner at Jay Gatsby’s house. It was hard to go past the degustation with a bottle of Falls Wines merlot. All the produce is sourced locally, including vegetables, herbs and edible flowers straight from the hotel’s own gardens. I was told that the chef, Daniel James, is passionate about knowing where the food he serves comes from. All staff were professional, friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. 62

The next morning I walked around the grand grounds to take in the fresh air and admire the scenery. Then it was off to try out the adjacent golf course. Mt Broughton Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole championship course, ranked 71 in the top 100 courses in Australia. A sudden sun shower drew me inside to the clubhouse which offered an ideal vantage point to absorb the view and watch other players run in from the rain. After the short lived shower I was able to hop in my buggy for a great game of nine holes.

Next was some well-deserved lunch. A breathtaking 20 minute drive led me to Centennial Vineyards Restaurant. Being popular for weddings it is important to book ahead. Lunch, looking over the stunning vineyard, was lovely. If you’re looking for somewhere more casual, I recommend Exeter General Store, close to my heart as this general store was once

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

owned by my grandfather. Today it continues as a general store but with a lot more quirk! Sit amongst floor to ceiling shelves, filled with second hand books, making for a nice atmosphere. If you get there early enough, they might still be serving their popular scones with jam and cream. Best of all, the coffee is amazing!

Wine tasting followed. Tertini Wines in particular stood out and is a new favourite. Recently awarded as Best Cellar Door in the Southern Highlands, the entertaining staff were wonderful and it was hard to taste a wine you didn’t want to take home. That night I had a wedding reception at Attunga, a wonderful farm and campsite named after an Aboriginal word for "high place”. A fitting name, considering its striking highland views. Before heading home I drove past a lovely restaurant, Feast @ McVitty located on the McVitty Grove vineyard which I also highly recommend. Set in a modern building overlooking a scenic valley, it served perfectly sized meals with great flavours to match a local bottle of Pinot Gris. The scenery on the drive home made for an ideal end to my weekend away. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Education Beyond BY RICHARD JACKSON UTS Honours Anne Prescott Anne Prescott will be familiar to many from her tenacious raffle ticket selling technique on Saturday mornings outside Eastern Road Quality Meats in Turramurra. When not selling raffle tickets Dr Prescott BA DipEd MSc MEd PhD is Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education in the Centre for Research in Learning and Change at the University of Technology, Sydney. Her commitment to developing teacher skills in remote hill villages in Gorkha District Nepal is just as tenacious as her raffle ticket selling. Dr Prescott has lead or participated in highly successful three teacher training teams and will return again in January 2015. In recognition of Anne’s commitment and success of the project, Anne has been awarded a prestigious UTS Social Inclusion Award. The award was presented by the UTS Chancellor Professor Vicki Sara at a ceremony attended by Dr Tim Soutphommasane, the Race Discrimination Commissioner for the Australian Human Rights Commission.

UNSW Students During July university holidays, five students from the University of NSW battled the Himalayan monsoon to spend some time teaching at our schools in Nepal. These trips are not a glorified holiday. The students work hard teaching in the classroom and as this was the fourth group from UNSW to visit the schools, the schools have learnt how best to deploy the volunteers to get maximum value from their time in the schools. The program has evolved to emphasise: • Science: The training of Nepali teachers in the teaching of science is very basic. The Nepali teachers value the opportunity to learn how the visiting university students were taught science in Australian schools and are often keen to ask the visiting students to demonstrate how they would approach specific topics. 64

• IT: A small computer lab has been established at Bhairabi School. The teachers have had little exposure to the digital world themselves, and of course no training in IT teaching, so the visiting UNSW students have a great deal to offer. The local people value the student’s contribution and in turn offer students real insight into the traditional lifestyle of the local people. As it was the monsoon, the students got their hands dirty ploughing the paddies with the water buffalo and planting rice seedlings! It was dirty work that they didn’t have to do but it became a special experience nonetheless!

More School Toilets There’s not much point improving teaching standards and facilities if the students are not at school due to illness. Improving hygiene and sanitation at schools has

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

been shown to have one of the highest returns on aid spending in developing nations. The benefit is particularly important to female students as grossly inadequate toilets often prevent the girls attending school while they are going through their monthly menstruation cycle. So, fresh from the construction of four school toilet blocks, we have started work on a Rotary International supported project to build seven more school toilet blocks, perhaps eight if we can raise a little more funding. Please contact Richard Jackson on rjackson@jacksonassociates.com. au if you wish to help. The bone bucket is a great source of fundraising for Nepal. Thank you! www.livinglocalguide.com.au

FAIR GO FOR FRUIT BATS! MISCHIEF-MAKERS, OR MISUNDERSTOOD MAMMALS? BY ALICE DICKMAN For many in the community, there is an understandable perception that flying-foxes are mischievous, nuisance animals. This perception has come about from reports that they cause problems in fruit orchards and carry diseases such as the Australian bat lyssavirus (which is a virus that can be transmitted from bats to humans). However, there is an entirely different side to this story, and one that is seldom heard above the clamour to control these native mammals. Whilst there are over 90 species of bats in Australia, I would like to focus on the most well known but widely disliked of them all, the Grey-headed Flying-fox or fruit bat. Found along the

eastern seaboard, this impressive megabat is grey with a regal, russet collar that encircles its neck. Despite being listed as a vulnerable species, many people mistakenly believe that its numbers are increasing. This is understandable as flying-foxes often establish large roosting colonies in urban areas, but this is due to the fact they have been forced to move as a result of habitat loss and destruction. A hotter climate also means that bats may hang around for longer than usual such as what happened last year in Gordon when local residents who lived near the Ku-ring-gai Flying-fox Reserve complained about the smell, noise and droppings of a raucous bat colony that remained

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

over the summer and winter months. Unfortunately, the relationship between humans and bats is a contentious one and bats, wherever they go, are rarely welcomed. Take, for example, their recent eviction via ‘noisedisturbance’ from the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. Even when people build near pre-existing bat camps – there are misplaced calls to cull them. This would not only be illegal, as bats are native animals, but also environmentally destructive as flying-foxes play an important role in pollinating flowers and transporting the seeds of rainforest trees. Despite the bad press about flying-foxes, they carry out unique and important functions, and continue to decline in the wild so that the animals you see are not representative of a ‘pest species’ overextending themselves, but rather the vestiges of a declining species forced to move into town because of changes to their habitat. Yes, some diseases have been linked to bats, so only trained personnel should handle them, but knee-jerk reactions to cull or eradicate flying-foxes are not the answer! Perhaps an old adage applies: that bats (and their habitat) should be left alone to perform their ecological tasks, and to provide us with an enchanting visual display as they fly over the city at dusk every evening. In the meantime, take a bat tour at Centennial Park – a new colony has just moved in!

GIFT GIVING BECOMES CRYSTAL CLEAR WHEN YOUR PLANTS ARE AS LIGHT AS AIR BY CLAIRE CAREY-JONES, ELEGANT OUTDOORS GARDEN CENTRE, TURRAMURRA Are you looking for something contemporary, stylish and practical? Then our new range of glass terrariums create a whole world of possibilities, especially when they are used to showcase an exceptional specimen plant, the Tillandsia, better known as an Air Plant. As the ultimate low maintenance plant, Tillandsias form the largest genus of the bromeliad family. They are epiphytic, which means they use their root systems to attach themselves to wood or rocks in the natural environment. Tillandsias require minimal care and can exist as a “free form” unattached specimen. Their wonderful structural form varies from strap-shaped to narrowly triangular or linear and they often have prominent sheaths that add to their appeal, as does the silvery grey green tones of the leaf blades. How best to display them? Well, a grouping of two or three looks fantastic. Our stylish multi-faceted glass vessels come in a cube, quad and fabulous pyramid shape, perfect for displaying a single plant which appears to float in its own world. These terrariums look equally at home on the office desk or kitchen bench. If you prefer an edgier urban look, team your air plant with our grey granite light globe-look holders.

A relaxed beachy look is achievable by sitting your “Tilly” on a bed of crushed shells, then adding that special shell you and your children found on that last holiday and suddenly a memory becomes a living story! Shells, candles, organic and woody accessories create an instantly relaxed feel and it’s so easy to create a personalised and imaginative gift. Not only that, plants have de-stressing benefits and we can all do with that at this busy time of the year. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Maintenance for air plants is super simple. There are three key elements to success – bright light or filtered sun, thorough misting with water once a week and good air circulation. Come into our nursery for your “Tilly Terrarium” and we’ll give you a care guide fact sheet. We’ll help you create a gift that’s a real piece of art with a personal touch. Suddenly gift giving is crystal clear!

LILY INTOXICATION IN CATS BY DR MARTINE PERKINS, BVSC(HONS) MRCVS, MACVS, PYMBLE VETERINARY CLINIC

The festive season is upon us and flowers are a very popular gift to give during this time. Not only are they a popular gift but many people also have more flower arrangements in their own households for entertaining at this time of year. Lilies are a popular flower but are exceedingly toxic to cats and can cause acute, irreversible renal failure and death in as little as three days. Kittens and indoor cats may be drawn to floral arrangements, as they are a novel feature that stands out in an otherwise very familiar environment. Cats often

play with and sometimes chew parts of the plant. This activity could easily go unnoticed by the owner. All parts of the lily are poisonous to cats – flowers, stem, leaves, stamen, petals and pollen. The toxic dose is unknown but thought to be reached by ingestion of, or mouthing, very small amounts of plant material. Cats are unique amongst domestic pets in their susceptibility to lilies. Dogs that consume large amounts of the plant develop only mild gastrointestinal signs and rabbits show no toxicity at all. Cats are probably affected due to differences in their metabolism.

Cats can also be easily poisoned by human medications such as paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin. The first signs of lily toxicity are vomiting, depression, dehydration and partial or complete loss of appetite. This usually develops within 2 - 12 hours and then subsides. Renal failure then develops 24 – 72 hours later at which time the cat becomes critically ill. Most cats do not survive lily intoxication unless detection and treatment is immediate. Many cat owners and florists are completely unaware of lily intoxication in cats. So please keep cats safe – avoid lilies in your house or garden or giving lily floral arrangements to any cat household!

Lilies are a popular flower but are exceedingly toxic to cats and can cause acute, irreversible renal failure and death in as little as three days.

SCHKINNY MANINNY SAVED MY LIFE - THE LONG TERM CLEANSE EFFECT This is my second Schkinny Maninny juice cleanse for Living Local and before I begin sharing my detox experience, I think a little background history may be helpful. When I was pregnant with my first child I had something called gestational diabetes. I knew things had to change. I realised that when I hit 30, my body stopped bouncing back like when I was 25. Anyone who knows me knows that I am often sick.

lovely rainbow lorikeets outside will enjoy these”. Instead I enjoyed them. When you are only drinking fluids, you begin to miss chewing. Adding seeds and mixing it up with soup was a nice change too. My body however was fighting against this new healthy plan. I started to crave alcohol, sugar, caffeine, you name it but I fought every instinct in spite of the caffeine withdrawal symptoms! It took me a couple of days to get into it and when I did, the days got easier and easier.

When I got started on the detox, I was less than excited about the prospect. I had a busy lifestyle as a young mum and I did not feel ready to add a change of diet to my already busy life. So with a big sigh, I got started on the Schkinny Maninny cleanse. The main noticeable difference this time was that I had soup, detox tea and seeds to chew. When I received my tiny little tub of seeds with my first Schkinny Maninny delivery I thought “the

After I finished the cleanse, my skin was soft and my body felt good. However as soon as it was over I went back to my "normal" everyday eating and my body reacted. I couldn’t stand the thought of alcohol, sugar and caffeine. My tastes and cravings had changed and my body had become use to fresh and healthy produce. I then quickly worked at fixing my diet so that it reflected what Schkinny Maninny had provided.

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2014

I never truly felt that I could feel satisfied in eating healthy and now if I try to eat like my old habits, my body doesn’t like it. I can highly recommend doing Schkinny Maninny. Even though it’s hard especially if you are used to a high carb and high sugar diet, the end result is worth it. Schkinny Maninny supports you with great emails every day and you can follow them on social media and see what other people are doing too. I was on the road to being massively overweight, a heartbeat away from diabetes and constantly sick. Now my immune system has improved and I think about everything that goes in my mouth (I stay away from processed foods). Also my weight loss is gradual and healthy. My body is getting into its natural shape the right way. Schkinny Maninny is so much more than a detox, it’s a life saver. www.schkinnymaninny.com.au
