WELCOME TO WINTER!

this issue...

We were so excited to have been granted accredited media access to follow the royals! Maree (our photographer) and I worked together as a tag-team photographing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they rapidly made their way around Sydney. We hope you enjoy this special edition of Living Local, showcasing a pictorial spread of William and Kate’s visit including quotes we collected from locals who met them, a history behind previous royal tours and notes about Kate’s style. Even more photos can be found on our website.

Your Letters In your interview with Leigh Hatcher, I most liked his passionate advocacy for those in need due to age and common mental health issues. His heightened compassion is obviously informed by his own experience in caring for his in-laws and finding appropriate treatment and accommodation for them, as well as his own illness with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I found the entire interview most enlightening and inspiring and wish him all the best in his new role at HammondCare. Anthea - Gordon

In the current edition I was encouraged to hear about Carolyn Stedman who has made a difference to so many children. It was great to see her recognised for all her hard work. Jocelyn - Gordon I was just reading your magazine, it's gorgeous and very informative! Meg - Turramurra I thoroughly enjoyed reading your latest Living Local magazine - places to eat, places to shop, places to visit, inspiring individuals. Julie - Wahroonga

TOP APP REVIEWS BY BRANDON COWAN, APP DEVELOPER - CRAZY DOG APPS WILDLIFE WITNESS “Downloaded and endorsed by Prince William” I’m an animal lover but you shouldn’t need to be one to fight back against animal cruelty; Wildlife Witness makes it very easy to report it. The illegal wildlife trade is an international crisis. Today, alone, 60 elephants will be killed and 12,000 bears are sitting in cages as part of the worldwide demand for wildlife products. These statistics are not flattering and I know that I would personally hate to be those poor animals right now. But there is hope and it is up to us to put an end to the needless killing and cruelty endured by these helpless animals. Wildlife Witness gives you the power to identify and report any wild animal cruelty incidences in Australia and Southeast Asia. Reports are automatically sent to a global organisation called TRAFFIC who investigate the reports and take appropriate action with relevant authorities. Be part of the solution and make sure you have Wildlife Witness ready! Available for free on iPhone and Android.

WIFI PHOTO TRANSFER It is no secret that Apple make it difficult for us to share photos and videos on our iPhones. WiFi Photo Transfer is the key that unlocks the annoying, photo-sharing shackles that come with our devices. This handy app lets you easily share photos or videos from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to your computer or any Smartphone, with ease. You wirelessly send up to 200 photos or videos at once, entirely for free! It is a great workaround to Apple’s 5 photo (or 1 video) limit when sharing via email. Available for free on the App Store. If you need to share more than 200 photos or videos at once, a paid version is available for just $1.29. 10

NEON LABYRINTH! - RELOADED Neon Labyrinth! is a futuristic labyrinth physics-based puzzle game that is simple, yet addictive. You are given control of a swarm of particles and are tasked with leading them to safety by tilting your iPhone. There are many different traps and obstacles to look out for which add to the fun-ness (disclaimer: I know that isn’t a real word) of the game. The higher the level, the more obstacle types. Jam-packed with over 225 different levels and 5 game types which is more than enough to keep you busy, especially for game-obsessed geeks like myself. Reloaded edition is available for free on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

SMASH HIT “Possibly the coolest app ever” – Brandon Cowan (yes, I did just selfquote myself and I do realise that I am lame). As an app developer, I couldn’t help but notice the brilliance of this app. Neither could Apple when they featured Smash Hit all over the App Store, including on the iTunes homepage. Truly a one-of-a-kind game that takes advantage of incredible 3D physics that pushes the technical limitations of an app to the edge. The graphics, sounds, animations of shattered glass and virtual buildings, 3D balls amongst other aspects are pretty incredible. It is difficult to use words to describe an app of such perfection so I’ll just stop now. Fun fact: Smash Hit and a public transport app called Tripview (if you haven’t heard of it, you could be living under a rock) are both two apps that I wish I created. I guess I’ll have to just settle with the 20+ other apps I’ve made…Available for free on iPhone and Android.

But winter is a time of preparation, for planting seeds and bulbs. It is a time of expectation that in due

season, when the sun returns so will life. A full life blooming from these humble seeds. As winter comes, we have already begun to wait for spring’s arrival. It is as the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote, 'If winter comes, can spring be far behind?' We live through the winter confident that what we have sown, in hope, will burst into life.

Z 6 7 C B I 8 9 W I L L I A M S M 11 M M M E A E L S R 16 L H M I H A 18 M A R C I A N A T R E E

Winter is upon us. It is a time for digging out the accompaniments of the season – hearty meals, warm coats and cold/flu tablets. As winter comes life seems to slow down a little; we are less frenetic, more willing to lay low.

We are confident, but aware that such a miracle as life is not in our power. Our confidence is in the power of another. It is a confidence rightly placed in our God who gives us life, breath and everything else. This winter I invite you to consider the full extent of his power to bring new life; not just to bulbs but to our very bodies. Here is the Christian hope, if winter comes, can spring be far behind? It is as Jesus declares about himself in John’s gospel; "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even if he dies". We can be sure that our God can bring new life, eternal life. This is our hope. Winter is upon us, another season we are blessed with, a season that will come and go. But, a season filled with hope of new life. What better season than this to investigate the claims of Jesus Christ, who offers this confident hope to anyone who would believe?

local things to do We like to take our daughter to the zoo on a lovely sunny winter's day! Elissa - Wahroonga

I like to spend my winter ice skating at Macquarie Ice Rink (and pretending I'm skating at Rockefeller Centre, New York, at Christmas time). Katrina - Pymble

I love winter on the North Shore because the green treefilled streets and beautiful camellia gardens inspire me to venture outside and walk in the neighbourhood. Crunchy fallen leaves, misty moist air and (usually) sunny days are a joy to experience as long as you are warmly dressed and ready to absorb the beautiful atmosphere and surroundings. We are very fortunate in living here. Anthea - Gordon

I like to get cozy at home in winter: light up the candles, make myself a cup of hot tea, pick up a good book to read... Wei - Hornsby

In my spare time I love to take a few Doggies for a Walk from Monika's Doggie Rescue and get some exercise in for myself too. They are always looking for walkers as their doggies are in great need of them and plenty of cuddles.

I love visiting (the secret) Swain Gardens (not many people seem to know about this place) a serene and secluded place. Pristine and colourful grounds - the Camellias of winter give over to the Azaleas of spring. A perfect place to visit and to take in the scenery.

Next, take an angle brush and sweep a light brown eyeshadow (no shimmer!) across your brows to blend the real hair and the pencil. Brow pencils and powders tend to appear darker on the brows than they look on your hand, so for best results go one shade paler than your hair to get a perfect match.

...Cindy Crawford said 'even I don't wake up looking like Cindy Crawford'

HOW TO RE-CREATE'The Kate' BY ELLEN MALONE, BEAUTY EXPERT Every great beauty has her signature look- think Audrey Hepburn's brows, Marilyn Monroe's red lips or Maria Callas's liquid eyeliner. We now have a new beauty icon, one that famously did her own make up for her wedding day, spawning millions of copycat looks all over the globe. So, how does she do it?

wearing just a bb and looking like a supermodel, however, as Cindy Crawford said 'even I don't wake up looking like Cindy Crawford'. So, pick a foundation which matches your BODY colour (not your face or neck) and apply with a brush, blending well. Follow with an illuminating concealer under the eyes, and some translucent powder to set. FOUR KEYS TO THE Next: apply a dusty pink KINGDOM: HOW TO REblush with just a hint CREATE 'THE KATE' of shimmer along the Key one: flawless glowing cheekbones towards the skin with a pretty pink cheek. temples. Key three: neutral smoky eyes. I know it's tempting to buy the brightest, sparkliest eyeshadow you can find but when it comes to classic beauty, neutral brown is best. First, take a chocolate brown eyeliner pencil and trace it along your lash line, top and bottom. Smudge with a small brush so there are no little gaps. Next, take the same light brown shadow you used for brows, and blend it evenly over the lid, starting with the lash line and ending a little above the crease. Blend with a little loose powder if the edges are too harsh. Add some white eyeliner on the inner rim to brighten your eyes, curl your lashes and apply THREE coats of very black mascara. Top tip: when you think you've applied enough mascara, add one more coat. Key four: the perfect nude pink lip. We all know the old adage, pick eyes or lips, not both? Wise words. Take a brownish pink lip liner a little darker than your natural lip colour and fill your lips in, leaving a little bare patch in the middle of the lower lip. Next, take a soft nude pink lipstick (the colour of your gums is a good guide) and apply two coats with a brush, blotting between layers. Add a swipe of soft pink gloss and you're fit for royalty!

Stealing private moments wherever possible between their jam-packed itinerary, William and Kate – with their new and adorable son Prince George their time spent in Sydney; we hope you enjoy what we felt was a refreshing Royal visit mixing both business with pleasure.

The Royal couple also received a demonstration of Taronga’s new Wildlife Witness app, developed in partnership with TRAFFiC, which enables users to report illegal wildlife trade using their smartphones. See our app review on page 10.

“They were very friendly. i think they enjoyed their experience and i definitely enjoyed meeting them. More than anything else, it was a wonderful chance to show the amazing diversity of wildlife we have here in Australia.”

While Prince George returned to the care of his nanny, Maria; William and Kate went on to take in the sights of the zoo. They were captivated by the bird show, which included iconic Australian birds and mammals such as koalas, echidnas and quokkas, and the show also featured harry the brolga - “he’s the red head,’’ the MC said, drawing a chuckle from William at the expense of his younger brother. When it was time to finally leave, the royal tourists left to a standing ovation from the delighted audience.

When Kate was introduced to Leuca, the koala, she reached out gingerly to stroke the animal’s grey fur.

“This is the moment everyone has been waiting for,’’ her husband said.

Another very inspiring ‘Staff Grants’ evening was held at Turramurra Community Bank® Branch on 10 April 2014. This is the fourth time that each of our staff members has nominated a local community group to receive a small grant to be invested in a community project. Since the ‘Staff Grants’ program commenced, our branch staff have assisted more than 20 local community groups in this way. Cheques were presented at the branch to the well deserving recipients. Michele Ferris chose Lynch Syndrome Australia, Karen Chivas the West Pymble Banksia Guides, Jodie Chilvers the NSW Justices Association, Sharon Franke the Duke of Edinburgh Program at Turramurra High School, Gabi Phipps the St Ives Rugby Club New Zealand Tour, Vikki Atkins the Lantern Club and Diana Smith the 2nd Turramurra Scout Group. JB’S HAIR DESIGN After more than three decades in the hairdressing industry, Jo Nicol of JB’s Hair Design is still passionate about her craft. The staff at Jo’s salon is made up of a creative team of progressive stylists and colourists who like to take their time with their consultations and who are intuitive and attentive to their customers’ needs. Jo’s passion for customer service is something that she shares with the staff at Turramurra Community Bank® Branch. Jo has been banking at the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch for more than seven years. She was initially attracted by the range of banking products that they offered as well as their reputation for providing exceptional personal service. “I couldn’t be happier with Denice Kelly and her team and the service that they provide is second to none. They all know me and are familiar with my business and nothing is ever too much trouble”. Jo and her husband Greg, a local architectural design draftsman with GWN Drafting, both have their personal and business accounts with Turramurra Community Bank® Branch and have invested in a number of the branch’s insurance products as well. Both their adult sons also have their business and personal accounts at the branch. Giving back to their local community is also a passion that Jo and Greg have in common with the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch. Greg has been involved for a number of years working in a voluntary capacity at Kissing Point Football and Sports Club. Jo and Greg are also volunteer members of the “Beautify Turramurra” committee, a working group that has recently been established to identify ways to enhance the local environment and create events to bring more life to the Turramurra town centre. COMMUNITYNews AUSTRALIAN REAL ESTATE TRENDS By Warren Dwyer, Branch Manager, Lindfield Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank

With the median house prices increasing, now is a great time if you are a first home buyer to consider purchasing your first home. With interest rates at historical lows it is also a great time for existing mortgage holders to review and restructure their loans to take advantage of the low interest rate environment. The latest edition of the Bendigo Bank/REIA Real Estate Market Facts Report (March 2014) reveals some interesting trends around Australia that should prove useful for people seeking suitable residential or investment properties across several price points. The Australian weighted average median house price is now $598,044 or 5.7 per cent higher compared with the September quarter 2013. This is a 13.1 per cent increase for the year. The December quarter was a standout in terms of capital city price growth. Sydney had the highest median house price across the capital cities at $763,000, an increase of 15.1 per cent over the year when compared to December 2012 or 6 per cent for the quarter. If you are interested in either restructuring, refinancing or using the untapped equity in your property to build wealth then please give us a call to find out how we can tailor a home loan package for you. Please contact Warren Dwyer at Lindfield on 0434 730 976 or Denice Kelly at Turramurra on 9488 9496.

BABYDONKIE.COM.AU – CLOTHING, ACCESSORIES AND DÉCOR BabyDonkie.com.au is an online store offering a collection of hand-picked children’s items from boutiques, organic products, handmade labels and new Australian designers started by local Lindfield resident Dong-Maria Le. Her website offers a unique range of beautiful products including charming and affordable clothing, accessories, . toys and décor for babies and kids. Baby Donkie took a few years to get off the ground. Dong-Maria started the business when she was on maternity leave with her first child when she sold a few things on ebay. It then blossomed and grew to the gorgeous website it is today whilst she was on maternity leave with her second son. Dong-Maria opened accounts for her online business at the Lindfield Community Bank® Branch about a year ago. She chose to bank with them because they were smaller and she thought that they would be able to spend more time with her and provide her with a more personalised service. She received step-by-step help through the process of setting up her merchant banking and credit card facilities for her website.

SAVE TIME COUNTING YOUR COINS AND LET OUR MACHINES DO IT FOR YOU. Our Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank® Branches both have high speed, self-service coin counting machines that are capable of counting 2,200 coins per minute or 38 coins per second. You simply pour your coins in and the machine counts them and issues you with a receipt to present to one of our Branch staff to be credited to your account. It’s as easy as that!

“I like doing my banking with Lindfield Community Bank® Branch because the service has been fantastic and was just what I was looking for. As I live locally, it is also easy to pop-in to the Branch or to give them a call if I need anything”. Please visit the Baby Donkie online store at babydonkie.com.au www.livinglocalguide.com.au

It’s the first question we ask when we wake up to ourselves. It doesn’t have to be asked in exasperation. The best way to ask it is with love, because then it’s a life-changer. It lets us step back, mindfully aware of where we are, who we are and where we’re going. And then we can step forward with purpose, alive to the possibilities. Real philosophy begins with a heart-felt question like this and then it carries on by giving you the means to teach yourself. The School of Practical Philosophy runs an 11-week course on Practical Philosophy and Mindfulness which gives you a chance to re-ask the sorts of questions we’ve all asked at some time or another. Who am I? What does it mean to be mindful? What is it to be wise? The mindfulness of Practical Philosophy simplifies life: bringing clarity, understanding and decisiveness to our thoughts and actions. Term 3 commences Monday 15th September. Philosophy was originally meant to change your life. Somewhere along the way, practical philosophy got hijacked by theoretical philosophy. It’s time to take it back. It’s a course for thoughtful men and women seeking to understand the nature of existence and the world in which we live. It explores the meaning of wisdom, truth, consciousness and the power of love. It is for all, regardless of education, occupation, age, race, political or religious beliefs. * Prices applicable for an 11 Week Course starting week of 15 th September 2014. Our children LOVE coming to school EVERY day... ...come and see why. The real test of an education is if children can adapt to the next phase of their life and be happy in themselves and their abilities. This is our goal at Northside Montessori School. Our graduates tell us of their ability to accept challenges, take ownership of their learning, mix with diverse groups and have realistic knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses. We want our students to have wings to fly - to find their passions in life and have the courage to pursue them. Our education allows that to happen. We offer an educational program for children aged 18 months to 12 years - “giving children wings to fly”

what patients say about SOMATHERAPY NECK TREATMENT: A few years ago I started to experience severe pain in my shoulder and neck and later on developing terrible migraines. On several occasions I visited my general physician who couldn’t identify the cause of the headaches. I tried everything, from Nurofen Plus to Panadeine Forte and strong narcotic analgesics, however no medication worked. The headaches increased, and my mood swings were heavily affecting my physical and mental discomfort. The extra time spent in front of the computer led to numbness in my right arm and severe shoulder pain. My social and work life were being affected. One day, a colleague told me about Krystyna. I was very skeptical on my first visit; where modern medicine had failed, I was almost sure that nothing else would help. After my second visit, the pain was significantly reduced to the point where it was almost gone! It felt like a miracle. From my first visit, Krystyna identified the source of my debilitating pain and directed me on the road to recovery. Who would have though that the source of all my anguish was coming from my neck muscles and it took Krystyna only one session to discover this. She taught me how to sit, rest and even how to get out of bed! Her knowledge is precious to me, her kindness and compassion is out of the ordinary and her ability to

read your problem is amazing. I feel safe because I trust her. I cannot express my gratitude for everything Krystyna has done for me. She has changed my life; I call her my wonderful Angel. Thank you! Monica Agathocleous For over 12 months I had been experiencing considerable loss of movement in my neck and left shoulder area which made turning my head to the left a very restricted movement (which needless to say was detrimental to my driving ability). I had X-rays taken which showed degenerative bone in my neck but I had not suffered any particular accident throughout the years to this area.

In the meantime, my left arm and shoulder became restricted in movement as well, making it difficult to put my arm behind my back to do up a zipper or to even raise my arm to brush my hair. I spent approximately 10 months going along to a chiropractor but this treatment did not improve either my neck or arm. I stopped going to the gym at that stage to give my arm and neck time to heal without any exercise but this did not assist the situation either. My arm had at this stage started to ache at night and I was experiencing pins and needles in my arm and fingers. The whole thing was getting worse.

A friend reffered me to Krystyna. I initially attended twice per week for two, one and a half hour sessions and then after one month I reduced this down to one session per week. After weekly visits over a period of 5 months my neck and arm had completely regained complete movement. Thanks to Krystyna’s vast knowledge and skills I can now turn my head when lane changing, I am able to place my arm behind my back and I have returned to the gym. The treatment is painless (in fact so relaxing that most times I was able to go to sleep quite easily for the entire treatment session). I have recommended this treatment to my family and friends without hesitation - it is the only treatment that worked. Christine Solomon Frequent, severe headaches associated with chronic neck tension since 1997. I couldn’t move my head because of the pain and stiffness. Chronic fatigue and low mood because of the constant pain. I tried many therapies including acupuncture giving me short lasting relief only. My two months of treatments with Krystyna resulted in significant and long lasting improvement. At present only maintenance treatments every 3 weeks. I got my life back. I’m now happy and full of energy! Rebecca Brown

IS SUGAR REALLY THAT BAD FOR MY TEETH? BY DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMEDSCI, BDENT (HON) I am often asked how important diet is in maintaining a healthy mouth. The answer is that along with oral hygiene, our consumption of sugar is probably the most influential factor contributing to the development of certain dental diseases, such as tooth decay.

Countless studies have proven the link between sugar consumption and tooth decay. The reason is that sugar is used as food by bacteria in the mouth which produces acid. This acid then dissolves the enamel of the tooth, in other words, it decays the tooth. Good oral hygiene will ensure that the number of bacteria sitting on the tooth surface is minimised but there are a couple of other things to keep in mind with relation to sugar. The first thing to be aware of is that the frequency of sugar consumption is just as important as the quantity of sugar. Due to the fact that bacteria are using the sugar to feed, there is more acid being produced when there is a constant supply of sugar in the mouth, for example from regular snacking. So I always recommend having any sugary food in one sitting and then using a sugar free chewing gum to stimulate saliva flow which helps to neutralise acids. Use of a fluoridated toothpaste or mouthrinse can also help by remineralising the tooth surface.

Some sugars are worse for teeth than others Call us today for an appointment on 9498 3811

Some sugars are worse for teeth than others. The fructose and sucrose that are found in a lot of soft drinks and juices are readily used by bacteria and therefore potentially harmful for teeth, whereas other sugars such as lactose, which is found in milk, have been found to be less harmful. We all know that high sugar diets contribute to numerous other health conditions, like diabetes and obesity, so a good oral hygiene routine that includes an awareness about sugar consumption will not only benefit your teeth but your whole body as well. YOU’VE LOST THAT lovin’ feeling BY TINA VARTIS, FREELANCE WRITER Remember Top Gun? Remember the scene with Maverick and Goose in a bar singing, “You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling?” Yep, that song. That song you are now singing in your head. Have you ever felt that way and wanted to ‘bring back that lovin’ feeling'? Then I highly recommend a book written by Gary Chapman, Ph.D entitled The Five Love Languages. In his book, Chapman discusses the importance of learning the primary love language of your spouse in order to more effectively communicate your love to them (love languages which can be applied across all relationships). Dr Chapman suggests that there are five love languages we use in order to communicate love to one another - Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts 58

of Service and Physical Touch. Why is learning a love language important? Well, imagine yourself choosing to live and work in a foreign country where English is not the primary language spoken. If you refuse to learn the language of your new country, you will find yourself disadvantaged. You might make some progress through pointing, drawing pictures, using an interpreter or scrambling for words in a dictionary, but it will not be enough to fully engage with others in a deeply meaningful way. The same goes for love languages. If we want richly, rewarding relationships, then investing in learning the love language of another will go a long way to reaping relational dividends for you both. For instance, my primary love

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE WINTER 2014

language is Quality Time, so if I plan an activity with someone I love, I do so with the expectation of experiencing that activity together ie without divided priorities. So if you turn up and spend more time being distracted with your 'smart' phone by sending text messages, reading emails, updating Facebook, playing games or checking sport scores, then, trust me, that is not quality time spent with a loved one. Unless you’re expecting an urgent call from Joe Hockey asking you for urgent advice regarding putting the budget back into surplus, without alienating the electorate, then put the phone away. Being with someone who seems to have their phone surgically attached to them as a form of life support gets to be too much after awhile.

If we want richly, rewarding relationships, then investing in learning the love language of another will go a long way In the next edition of Living Local I will look at each love language in a little more depth. For now, just keep in mind that marriage and relationships are not about you, they are actually about the other person. Adjusting your expression of love to match the love language of your spouse, partner or boy/girl friend is a small sacrifice to make, in order to put their needs before yours and protect that "lovin’ feeling"! www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Eastern Road Quality Meats Supports Quality of Life BY KATRINA HEMINGWAY Allan Waldon of Eastern Road Quality Meats is a great supporter of worthy causes. In 2006 he raised funds for the renovation of Bhairabi School in Northern Nepal when he saw there was a desperate need for basic facilities to provide shelter and education for Nepalese children and he continues to support them, having recently returned while leading others on the 2013 Nepal Charity Trek. Closer to home he continues to assist other local fundraising initiatives where the objective is to improve the quality of the lives of others who are more disadvantaged than ourselves, such as those living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Starting in 2010 when he supplied the Mudgee2Sydney MS Walk with sausages for their BBQ fundraiser, Allan once again teamed up

with the event organiser, Katrina Hemingway, and hosted a BBQ outside his butcher shop to support her next big event. Starting August 30 Wainwright’s Coast2Coast MS Walk , a challenging 303km, 12-day trek for 17 Australians across England. From St Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast the event aims to raise $150,000 for research into a cure for MS. BEYONDLocal almost doubled in size. At the beginning of May we started our autumn calving. This is a great time of year as it is always pleasing to see new calves. We have, for the last couple of years, been running some Dorper sheep. We have increased our sheep numbers and have just purchased a mob of really top Dorper ewes. This was from a dispersal of a really well-known Dorper stud. These ewes are top class. We will be lambing in August and have joined some of the ewes to a new Australian White Ram. Like the Dorper they also shed their wool, so no shearing, crutching or fly strike. Total meat breeds.

Beef cheeks, ox tail and lamb shanks just to name a few. The Easter Show was another fantastic time for us, with some great beef. Once again, we supported Abbotsleigh and Knox schools purchasing beef from both. The quality of The Show beef was again, a very high standard. We took the chance to plant a huge range of pasture to ensure great pasture establishment.

We planted clovers, chickory, plantain, Serrondella, biserrula, Rhodes grass, digit, and oats. This gives us a huge range of forage herbs and pasture for all seasons.

The introduction of legumes, like clovers, adds natural nitrogen to the soil-makeup saving on the use of chemical fertilizers. DO A DAY TRIP - Barrenjoey First stop was Scott’s Honda in Artarmon to pick up the new Honda Odyssey for the day. We immediately noticed the space inside the car - you could host a barn dance or move a soccer team with all of the easily adjustable room. Three rows of seats (the front two are heated) still allow space to stretch out in style. The dashboard is modern and the comfortable ride and seating arrangements make it a dream to drive on a long trip (the arm and head rests are very comfy). Heading towards the Northern Beaches our first stop was The Armchair Collective, a charming café, restaurant and homewares store. It was made for mornings: the sun showers in, the colours of the goods and flowers are bright and a painted table is piled high with the day’s papers.

Next stop was to check out Avalon Beach from Surfside Ave before continuing toward some of Sydney’s best views at Palm Beach. The Odyssey’s large windows make it the perfect car to view scenery. The driving position, entirely customisable with the flick of a switch and the blind spot recognition are also a great help in a big car such as this. 64

Barrenjoey Lighthouse, built in 1881 of the attractive Hawkesbury sandstone, marks the northernmost tip of Sydney and allows panoramic vistas across Pittwater and beyond. Two entrances access Barrenjoey Headland. The long, rocky, cracked, often muddy pathway has been upgraded to a beautiful wide track, making facing the steep, one kilometre hill a breeze. Recent bushfires have resulted in particularly panoramic views. The arduous shortcut, Smugglers Track, is currently closed due to repairs. The main lighthouse keeper’s house is open free of charge, whenever lighthouse tours are running. With no electricity or running water, local legend Jervis Sparks lived in one of the cottages from 1968 to 1999, carefully restoring the buildings and surrounding headland.

It was then time to head back. With outstanding fuel economy the Odyssey’s petrol gauge barely moved, despite the car having impressive power. Implementing Honda's Earth Dreams Technology, the Odyssey makes every little errand guilt-free. Special thanks to the team at Scott’s Honda Artarmon. It was a great road trip!

LOCAL PIN BOARD not-for-profit Before we built the maternal waiting home, pregnant women would walk for hours to give birth at a hospital. They faced many dangers and some would not reach their destination, either giving birth on the road or in their homes, without proper medical care. On top of this, HIV infection is a serious problem in Zimbabwe, with around 11% of expecting mothers testing HIV positive during antenatal screening.

SAVING BABIES FROM HIV Babies in a rural village in Zimbabwe are being born healthy and HIV-free, with strong mothers to care for them, thanks to the work of St Leonardsbased charity, AFAP Action on Poverty. Executive Director Christine Murphy was almost moved to tears when she recently visited the maternal waiting home the local charity helped to build. Christine Murphy explains the situation and recounts her recent visit to Zimbabwe.

...the next generation of children will have a chance of a healthy future We have a small window of opportunity where we can stop the transmission of the virus from mother to child – it is a window of less than 24 hours from birth. When given Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMCT) medication within this timeframe, babies will not become HIV positive and the next generation of children will have a chance of a healthy future. This would be virtually impossible to achieve if mums give birth unassisted at home. When I visited in February, I was so impressed by the success of the birth home. Of the 84 births that had occurred at the home since it was built in November 2012, all the mums and babies survived and every child was born HIV-free. The mums were given a place to rest before they gave birth, and also education in breastfeeding and other related health issues that will help them keep themselves and their babies healthy. I could also see that the community felt a real ownership over the birth home, as they provided the labour and made the bricks to build it – with the hospital providing medical staff. This sense of ownership will ensure the sustainability of the birth home for years to com. AFAP Action on Poverty is a small St Leonards-based charity that has been operating since 1968. They work to alleviate poverty in 19 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Their approach is to work in partnership with local communities and other incountry organisations to ensure their projects are sustainable and address the needs of the people. A Ride on the Low-Interest Train

BY MARK BOURIS, YELLOW BRICK ROAD EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN

3

Principal reductions off your mortgage: A period of low interest rates is a good time to reduce your mortgage because small amounts of cash go a long way. If you had a $300,000 variable rate loan at 5.2%, over 30 years, you would pay $1648 a month. If you added $25 a week to the repayment, you'd save more than $45,000, and you'd pay back the loan four years faster. A loan on the same terms for 4.7% instead of 5.7%, you'll pay $186 less a month.

The Reserve Bank forecasts that interest rates will be very low for some time. It's a good idea to take advantage of this environment while it lasts, so here are my top tips to make the most of it.

1

Reduce non-mortgage debt: Before taking on any more loans, pay down your most expensive debt, which will probably be credit card, store finance or a personal loan. In a very low interest rate environment, don't be caught paying 15 to 20%.

2

Buy a house: If you can get a mortgage at 5%, you should think very seriously about getting a home loan and using the low-cost debt to own an appreciating asset and replace your rent. Property is a long-term investment and rates will go up, so make sure you are prepared.

4

Use your mortgage to reduce expensive debt: As you build equity in your property (the difference between the property's value and what you owe) consider refinancing the mortgage and consolidating high-interest debt into your low-interest mortgage. However, while consolidation can provide

MYTH #01

cashflow relief, always try to keep repayments at the same level so you're not extending your debt.

5

Investing: With low interest rates on mortgages, think about using your home loan to build wealth by leveraging investments. You could buy an investment property or use the equity in your main property to borrow, to fund a share portfolio. Whatever you choose, get advice from people who don't profit from your investment. Even when interest rates are low, you still have to focus on good information and decisions. Most importantly, take advantage of the opportunity. It won't last forever. THIS WINTER let’s Focus on Arthritis in Our Pets BY DR MARTINE PERKINS, BVSC(HONS) MRCVS, MACVS, PYMBLE VETERINARY CLINIC RISK FACTORS FOR ARTHRITIS through pain. Small frequent Age: Old Age is a factor but sadly there are lots of pets with arthritis from quite a young age. Breed and Genetics: Joint dysplasia is commonly seen in some breeds. Arthritis occurs much more quickly in such joints.

A recent study showed that one in five adult dogs are affected by arthritis irrespective of age. Cats also suffer from arthritis which often goes unnoticed. Osteoarthritis (OA), often simply called arthritis, is a degenerative joint disease that results in poor cushioning and lubrication of the joint during movement. As arthritis progresses the cartilage becomes brittle and can even chip off. These cartilage fragments can result in further inflammation and pain. OA develops slowly and it is often not until it is well progressed that people notice changes in their pets behaviour or ability to move.

Size: Large breed dogs are more susceptible to OA due to the higher body weight however OA is still common in small and medium breeds as well as cats! Excess weight: No matter what breed, overfeeding is a big factor in the development of OA. Previous joint trauma: Joint trauma or joint surgery are predisposing risk factors.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP OUR PETS? Weight reduction: ask your vet to check your pet's body condition score. Controlled exercise: low impact exercise is best. You should not force your pet to exercise

walks are desirable on level, soft ground. Swimming can be helpful but discuss this with your veterinarian as there are many complicating factors. Bedding: soft and comfortable bedding off the cold ground that is easy to get in and out of is best. Try and keep your pet warm and dry through the cooler months. Senior health check: Book your pet in for a senior health check every 6mths if your pet is over 8yr or acting differently. Our pet's age much more rapidly than us and 1yr is actually a very long time in an old dog’s life! Medications: There are many different medications, nutraceuticals and diets for arthritis. So many in fact that it can get quite confusing! Consult your veterinarian for an up to date and unbiased opinion. There is constant progress in veterinary medicine and a lot more options are now available other than just pain relief!

Our Pick

living local loves...

BY EDWINA HUNTER I’m quite a healthy person generally – I’m always on the lookout for healthy choices – so when I heard about Lucky You Cleanse I was intrigued to try it.

I chose the LYC 3 Day Juice Cleanse; made from Australianbased, fresh, cold-pressed, raw, unpasteurised juice. Each day begins with a warm glass of lemon water and then an Aloe Vera Elixir. The day progresses with six special juices.

70

Juice one: Pineapple Smoothie; Juice two: Green Juice – including everything green; Juice three: Spicy Lemonade – including Cayenne pepper, this one was tough but revitalising; Juice four: Red or Orange juice – a colourful palette of healthy nurturing ingredients; Juice five: Green Juice – collection of greens; Juice six: Cashew Nut Milk – that feeling you have when you really want a juice, is the exact opposite to what you feel like at this moment (after constantly drinking all day). Juice six’s saving grace though is that it’s a night time smoothie that keeps you full

until the morning! After two days of this routine it got easier and easier. I could feel the benefits from day two and the results after only day three were: increased energy, feeling extra hydrated and clearer skin. It also got me into a better habit of mixing my own smoothies thereafter. I’m tempted to do the cleanse again very soon. I highly recommend trying this – it’s not hard and it provides a great break from worrying about what to eat each day. And it's yum! YOURHome Daphnes are a firm favourite because of their sweet smelling flowers which form in clusters. They like to be in morning sun or dappled shade, with good drainage but they do not like being overwatered. The most common variety is Daphne odora with its pale pink flowers – pick some and place in a vase inside and enjoy the perfume that will waft through your house for weeks.

A Colourful Winter BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS, TURRAMURRA GARDEN CENTRE Whilst the temperatures can be a little on the chilly side, there are plenty of plants that flower throughout winter to warm your heart - here are just a handful of my favourites. Primulas absolutely scream winter. They flower profusely, come in a multitude of colours and make perfect potted plants. The Primula family is large and diverse but the most commonly planted varieties are malacoides which have bunches of small blooms on delicate stems and obconica, with their larger leaves and flowers. A close relative is the Polyanthus. Pinching off dead flowers and feeding regularly with Yates Thrive Flower & Fruit™ soluble plant- food will encourage repeat blooming. Put some at your front door – the cheerful colours will make you forget it’s winter time. There are many varieties of Pieris japonica, growing anything between 1 and 3 metres. From late winter into spring, they bear beautiful sprays of pendulous flowers which vary in colour from white to shades of pinky-red. The new foliage is commonly a reddishcopper colour, which in most varieties turns to pale pink, cream and finally green. For best results, plant Pieris in semi-shaded areas with good drainage, apply Garden Gold™ which is a controlled-release fertiliser lasting 2-3 months, and mulch well to avoid drying out. The most popular varieties are Temple Bells, Forest Flame, Shojo, Christmas Cheer & Mountain Fire.

Cymbidium orchids are grown for their spectacular, colourful flowers and architectural foliage. In winter, enjoy the blooms inside in a brightly lit area and water the plant just once a week, allowing the excess water to drain. Never let your orchid wollow in water as it may cause root or fungal problems. After the many weeks of flowering you’ll get from these fantastic plants, move them outside to a morning sun position and feed monthly with Strike Back For Orchids™ fertiliser pellets.

SPECIAL OFFER: WE’LL GIVE YOU A 300g TUB OF STRIKE BACK FOR ORCHIDS™ ABSOLUTELY FREE WHEN YOU BUY A CYMBIDIUM ORCHID, DAPHNE OR PIERIS DURING JUNE AND JULY (whilst stocks last). YOURHome requires regular clipping. Enter the Rhaphiolepis “Oriental Pearl” which does not require as much pruning. When selecting screening plants, the fast growing Lillypilly has become a popular choice providing a convenient short-term solution, but will increase on-going hedging duties. The humble Camellia is an investment in time. Although slower growing, once established will form a spectacular hedge with less maintenance required. Evergreens are forever clean!

PASSION OR CHORE? BY MATTHEW HOOK, DIRECTOR OF OUTDOOR ESTABLISHMENTS Winter is upon us with lower temperatures and shorter days. As you run out of the house to get your kids to school on time, you notice the neglected garden. “It’s ok” you think “I’ll tend to the roses after work”. It’s now 5pm, you arrive home after a busy day. The sun is setting and the roses aren’t that important any more. When designing a new garden it is important to consider how it will be maintained. How much time would you like to spend in the garden? Will you pay someone to do it for you and if so, the cost? Planning early helps achieve the desired result.

TIPS WHEN PLANNING OR RENOVATING A GARDEN. Turf the turf The North shore is well known

The humble Camellia is an investment in time for large blocks and while turf demands a spot in the garden don’t overdo it, keep your lawn area to a manageable size. Consider how you will navigate the lawn mower on different levels with retaining walls. Simple brick garden edges will save time and effort keeping your turf from creeping into the gardens and hard surfaces such as sandstone flagging or brick paving is a great, low maintenance alternative to the usual Sir Walter Buffalo in a high traffic area. To hedge or not to hedge The Buxus (or Box Hedge) is a great hedging plant. It thrives in the Sydney climate but

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Deciduous trees such as the Japanese maple, London plane tree and the Liquidambar are incredible to look at but picking up the thousands of leaves they drop every year is not so enjoyable. If you want an area shaded in the summer but sunny in the winter, a deciduous tree is a great solution. However, if appropriate, consider an evergreen tree such as a Magnolia, Tuckeroo or Waterhousea. As a feature tree they are bold and really stand out in the garden but best of all, you wont find yourself filling a green bin with any of their leaves come autumn and winter! Do you need help designing your new backyard? Or are you just trying to add that missing something to your existing backyard? Outdoor Establishments would love to help. It’s what we do!
