WELCOME TO SPRING!

this issue...

What a great feeling to know that the cold weather is behind us!

For our cover story, I had the pleasure of talking with Edward and Robert from Opportunity International Australia. They are working all around the world to raise communities out of poverty through microfinance. To my amazement, some of the people who start a business with microloans achieve truly incredible things; heartwarming, challenging and well worth a read. To keep you up to date with our local news, we have updated our website livinglocalguide.com.au. You can now expect weekly blogs about the local area plus more. Like us on Facebook, facebook.com/ LivingLocalGuide and follow our new Instagram account instagram.com/ LivingLocalGuide. Have a wonderful spring!

What I like most about Living Local Magazine is it's packed with information relating to the Upper North shore. I like finding out places to eat which we weren't aware of before. We also like the Education news so we are informed of the activities that have been happening and how the schools are performing. I like the fact that when we read the magazine, we know all the information relates to places, people that are from our local community. It will be even better if the magazine is published more often! June - Turramurra

APP REVIEWS BY BRANDON COWAN, APP DEVELOPER - CRAZY DOG APPS MESSENGER “The most popular, hated app ever… created by Facebook” Usually I review apps I love or admire but this is an exception and it seems that thousands of people from around the globe agree with me according to their negative reviews for the app. So why is this app so hated? The main reason is that the normal Facebook app previously had all their normal features such as news feed, ability to stalk profiles of friends and acquaintances, instant messaging, notifications and all the rest, in a single app. But now when you go to message a friend, you are advised to download the Messenger app. Messaging friends is now a separate function that is performed outside the Facebook app, using the stand alone messaging app. Why is this a problem? I’m glad you asked! Basically it is almost always a terrible practice in app development to 'force' your users to do something, which is exactly what Facebook have done. Instead of performing all your Facebook functions in the one app, users now need to download another app to perform a function that was initially available in the original app, but has since been removed. Removing functionality is hardly cause for celebration. Why did Facebook do this? Who knows, surely it just wasn’t to inconvenience and annoy their users. But then again … Unfortunately, Messenger is available to download for free on iPhone and Android.

UBER If you haven’t already heard of Uber, you probably don’t watch the news, listen to the radio or read the paper. Uber is a taxi replacement app that rose to fame due to its regular battles with taxi industries across the globe. I personally think of it as a 21st century taxi company though. It is what any of those 'oldschool' taxi companies would look like if they spent more time and money, investing in technology. 10

Uber lets you book a driver to pick you up from somewhere and drop you off, just like a taxi. But it’s better. The app lets you see where your driver is in real-time before they get to you, view their profile and average rating from other previous passengers and you can even pay with your credit card directly in the app so you don’t need cash on you. Uber is in 44 countries (yes, including Sydney) and available to download, free, on iPhone and Android.

POLICECAM

rape-whistle”

“Keep safe and prevent violence with Policecam – the 21st century

Policecam – Safety & Emergency is an app designed specifically to prevent violent and sexual assaults before they happen, and gather evidence against those who engage in that sort of behaviour. When you are witnessing a crime about to take place or are afraid of something happening, simply open Policecam and shake the phone to start a video recording. But that’s not it, there’s a lot more safety sauce that has been poured into Policecam. When you activate the app: • A police siren alarm sounds to warn potential offenders not to attack in order to deter them from committing a crime. • The video recording gets uploaded to a website instead of the device so if the offender takes your iPhone, they cannot take the video evidence. • A link to watch the video recording, along with your GPS coordinates is sent to up to 3 of your emergency contacts. The app has been designed as a way to prevent violence and sexual assault, with its main focus targeting potential coward punches. Policecam is available for free on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Disclaimer: My Company (Crazy Dog Apps) is affiliated with Policecam however, we do not profit off the app. Policecam is entirely free to use and the only instance where people may be optionally asked to pay is if they abuse the system and activate the emergency feature more than 5 times.

In our world today we can always find reasons to complain. But, for the most part our complaints are ‘first world problems’ and if we take a step back we can see how

blessed we are. Spring is upon us and when we stop to take life in, we can see how blessed we are. This season is bursting forth with flowers, colours, warm days, tastes and sounds of new life rising forth out of winter and the remarkable thing about all of this, is that it is a gift. We earn none of it. It is freely given to all of us no matter who we are.

Recently my family needed to make use of a local hospital. I was struck by how blessed we are, living in a city where amazing facilities, faultless service and skilful treatment are made available to us.

SPRING IS UPON US

The Bible has a word for this experience – favour! Favour is a word that we normally don’t hear in our world, yet it is how God treats us. He showers on us life, guidance, blessings and everything else. Yes, you can look to the rich blessings of spring to see this. But, if you want to be sure God is favourably disposed toward you, then I invite you to consider God’s son Jesus, of whom the scriptures say this: for you know the favour of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that through his poverty you might become rich. God is so favourably disposed toward us that his son Jesus, freely spent his life to the point of death so that we can know God’s riches of forgiveness, love and hope. This spring, why not take time to explore God’s favour with us. www.standys.org.au

SOCIALPages FROM THESE DISCUSSIONS MIKE WAS HAPPY TO DISCOVER THAT: • He could receive most of his full time pay just by working two days because of the insurance he didn’t know he had in his super fund; and that he • Already had enough retirement savings in place to leave work immediately.

MIKE’S GREAT ESCAPE BY MARK LEWIN, CFP ® FINANCIAL PLANNER Mike was anxious and very tired. He had just returned to work after a six month illness but his on going back-aches meant that not matter what he tried the pain he felt always left him feeling uncomfortable at work. Even though Mike worked part time his pain caused him many problems and he barely managed to work his two days per week. Mike’s doctor told him that if he took more time to rest, his back would give him less problems. However, since Mike suffered from osteoarthritis, he knew he would never be completely better. Besides, Mike had responsibilities and commitments that couldn’t afford him to take the type of rest he needed without it severely impacting his life. 14

Mike had only gone back to work because all of his leave had been used up. This was despite the help he received from his HR manager who worked out the best plan for him to spread out his entitlement payments for as long as possible. Now, with all of his sick leave, long service and holiday pay used up, Mike was unsure what would happen next. All of his life he had worked towards a comfortable retirement. Now four years earlier than he had planned, he asked himself whether he could afford to retire or would he need to continue working in spite of the daily pain he suffered? Fortunately, Mike decided to call a financial planner to discuss the options available to him.

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SPRING 2014

Mike was of course very relieved to be informed of this situation. In fact, considering all of the stresses at his job, he decided not to bother with the insurance claim and resigned immediately. Mike is now relaxing and has started to adjust to his retirement lifestyle. His back is less of an issue for him and he can put time into the things he would rather do, knowing that his financial concerns were taken care of. Like Mike, are you working with health issues when you may be able to claim insurance and recuperate? Could your finances already be enough to allow you to afford to retire? Isn’t time you sought professional financial advice?

. . . [Mike] asked himself whether he could afford to retire or would he need to continue working in spite of the daily pain he suffered?

What do mums do when they no longer go to work? BY ELISSA TOMLINS, LOCAL MUM So you’ve just had a baby. Bub’s settled into a routine, hubby’s back at work, and you’re finally getting “just enough” sleep. Watching re-runs of Offspring was fun at first but it’s now wearing thin. The best thing I ever did was to ring up a friend; a more experienced mum-of-two who offered for me to come over for a weekly catch-up where our bubs would play on the mat and we could enjoy cups of tea - just like old times. I also continued to meet with my newborn mothers’ group. We would meet together for the first 12 weeks through the local Early Childhood Health Centre, and from there all it took was one or two mums with some initiative and a new social group was born. There was always something to do with the group that was enjoyable for both mum and bub - lunch at the park, play dates at a house, or simply an enjoyable coffee in a café.

2

BECOME MORE ACTIVE

That was enough for the early months, but when bub grew up, she needed more activity. So we started finding playgroups. So much fun! There are lots of toys to play with as well as freshly made cakes and a whole new group of mums to meet. Playgroups are inexpensive, and lots of local churches and community groups offer them.

3

EDUCATE YOUR TODDLER

I’ve tried to give my toddler lots of learning experiences, such as being part of a music group (Mainly Music), taking her to the local sports centre (Softplay) and taking her to swimming lessons. The activities don’t have to be expensive, and don’t forget there’s always the local park.

A PRIVATE CHEF BRINGS THE RESTAURANT HOME BY LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE A new kind of catering has come to the North Shore. DIMANCHE - a unique Private Chef who literally brings the restaurant to you, in the comfort of your own home. Meet Lauren. North Shore-ite, studied Event Management with experience built across several industries. Meet Maxime. French-born Chef, studied in France under some of the world’s finest French Chefs, Phillipe Labbe and Michel Sarran. A homely style of cooking, Maxime combines his passion for the kitchen and his experience from his parents, grandparents, Michelin star Chefs and Hatted Chefs (including Manu Fieldel!) to create dishes that truly tantalise and tease the tastebuds. The concept of the company is to provide an alternative dining experience for those who might be time-poor, have small children or who just want something

different, unique and a bit special. Maxime and Lauren work with you to design a menu specially personalised to your evening and something that all your guests can enjoy. On the day itself, they will take over your kitchen and create a Michelin-star meal, individually plated and served by waitstaff making you feel as though you’re dining at a top Sydney restaurant. Special wines can be provided and paired with each course. For those wanting an even more unique experience, you can even ask for a sommelier to join you on the night and talk you and your guests through the wine selections. And the best part? They will clean up and put away anything used, leaving your kitchen spotless, your stomachs full and you and your guests with an opportunity to get socially re-acquainted!

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

So how did DIMANCHE begin? It all began when boy met girl and they fell in love… Boy was a Chef so Sundays became designated date night. Divine dishes were eaten, wondrous wines consumed. Laughter, stories, memories made. There was romance, there was love. It was two people enjoying each other’s company over fine wines and some truly delicious dishes. And then came baby. Lives changed and Sundays were no longer date night but just another night of the week. Enter the word 'no'. No to date night and no to get-togethers. Maxime and Lauren longed for those nights of food and fond memories and knew other friends were in the same boat. And DIMANCHE was born. In French, DIMANCHE means Sunday. A reminder of the experiences Maxime and Lauren shared as a couple and a motivation for the memories they want to create for their guests. DIMANCHE dinner is a Private Chef experience, based on the North Shore. They are available for bookings 7 days a week for brunch, lunch or dinner and they can provide you with canapés, sit down meals and romantic/ wedding packages. If you would like to sample Maxime’s dishes, tastings are run regularly by DIMANCHE at various locations around Sydney. Karoo & Co is a newly established family owned business located in Wahroonga. The name originated from a region of South Africa called the ‘Little Karoo’. When the du Plessis family moved to Sydney they wanted to create a Karoo influenced café/restaurant that serves homemade speciality meals with a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere. Karoo & Co offers all day, takeaway and evening menus. The all day menu consists of light meals such as Curry Bunnies, Boerewors, Bobotie and Malva pudding. Our evening menu consists of a selection of wines, crafted beers and wood fired pizza. The café will also have a deli and homewares section featuring products such as dried fruit, chutney’s, African quilts and bowls. With every purchase, 10% will be donated to a charity in Africa to combat poverty. You’re invited to experience a taste of Karoo & Co.

Sponge Tipped Applicators Or Dodgy Brushes As soon as a sponge tipped applicator starts to fall apart, it needs to go in the bin. You can get packets of disposable applicators quite cheaply, and your eyeshadows will last better with the use of clean tools. Better still, invest in a small set of quality brushes. They are much easier to clean and will give a better finish. Brushes should be washed once a week with shampoo or laundry soap- avoid getting the handle wet for greater longevity.

Anything Which You Haven't Worn For Over A Year

SPRING HAS SPRUNG, THE GRASS IS RIZ, I WONDER HOW MY MAKE UP IS? BY ELLEN MALONE, BEAUTY EXPERT I love a good spring clean and nothing makes you feel as good as a clean car/ house/makeup bag. With winter on the way out, it's a great time to say out with the old....

Mascara However unpopular this might be, I'm going to say it. The preservative systems in mascaras only work properly for the first three months after opening- even if you don't use yours all the time. You MUST chuck it if it's flaky, smells funny, or you've had an eye infection. No excuses. 28

Pressed Powders These tend to form a 'crust' on top, formed by oil from your face mixing with old product on your sponge or brush. Eww. Keep your new one fresh by changing sponges or washing your brushes regularly.

Lip Glosses, Especially Those With A 'Dip' Applicator Anything which goes on your lips will tend to be a breeding ground for bacteria. Lipsticks can be scraped and disinfected, much harder to clean out a

It's old, and you either don't love it or it just doesn't suit you. Make space in your bag for something you really adore. And in with the new....

Foundation Your skin will tend to be a little more tanned (and not so dry!) than during winter, branch out and try something different. Many formulas now contain skin brightening ingredients for extra glow.

Face And Body Illuminator Make up is all about showing off your best assets and with spring on the way and more skin on show, a good illuminator will show off what yo' mama gave you. Place a little on tops of cheekbones, Cupid's bow and collarbone. Va-va-voom!

Fragrance With a sweet breeze in the air and flowers in bloom, a new perfume will put a spring in your step. Swap your heavier fragrance for something fresh and pretty - if you have a signature fragrance you cannot live without, many brands make lighter versions of their classics to suit the warmer weather.

WITH A SMALL LOAN, MOTHERS LIVING IN POVERTY CAN START A SMALL BUSINESS AND PROVIDE FOR THEIR CHILDREN

RAISING COMMUNITIES OUT OF POVERTY BY LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE Edwina Hunter interviews, Chairman, Edward Kerr and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Dunn of Opportunity International Australia, both of whom are working to raise communities out of poverty, all around the world through microfinance. Can you tell us a little about Opportunity International Australia and how supporters’ funds are being used? Opportunity International Australia empowers families through community development programs and small loans. Currently our work is focused in India, Indonesia and the Philippines. Two areas we focus on are: (1) Microfinance and (2) Community development programs. Microfinancing is a way to give people a hand up by making small loans available to families living in poverty. With as little as $70, people can start their 30

own business and begin to earn an income in order to afford the things that we so easily take for granted living in Sydney, such as food, clean water, proper shelter and an education. The people who apply for loans are very poor. With no credit history and no assets, their desire to get out of poverty drives them to succeed. Success allows them to make repayments and it breeds hope for adults, as they know that this is a ticket out of poverty for their kids. As one adult explained, “I expected to live my life in this slum, but I don’t want my kids raising their kids in a slum.” The other way funds are being used is to make sure the programs Opportunity is involved in are as impactful as possible. Opportunity works through local partners in the Philippines, India and Indonesia. The local partner from Opportunity International

will go into an area and introduce programs to community leaders and identify those interested. They in turn, hold a town meeting and discuss the opportunity. All it needs is a little spark of interest. So who does this all work? Microfinance isn’t just about loans, it’s about insurance and savings and all the other things we consider financial services. There is a lot of information to unpack and it is generally done over a three-day period so that the community has time to understand what it’s all about. From here, small groups of five people then decide to go ahead and those five people will generally guarantee each other’s initial loans. Initially it’s a support structure that helps to build confidence but as everyone progresses and people begin to repay the loans, then the program moves to an individual model. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

COVERStory who are involved with sanitation or water programs or education or housing. Are your clients hopeful for a better future? Our clients have hopes and dreams for their kids just like we do here in the North Shore. They have a fantastic optimism and hope, which comes from their community relationships, as they tend to help each other out. They do community a whole heap better than we do. You see it even in the rubbish tips in Manila. Look at the failure rate of small business here in Australia. The difference in these countries is that they won't let small business fail, they help each other up. So it’s very inspiring. A huge benefit for a woman running her own business can

often mean that her husband can move back home from working far away which reunites the family and allows them all to work in the family business. The strength that is shown in these communities is something we can really learn from. There is such a remarkable difference between what we are like here on the North Shore or in Australia at large. Sometimes here in Australia, people don’t talk to each other and often people don’t even know who their neighbours are. They may drive into the garage, put the electric garage door down and walk into their own house and hardly communicate with the people around them. It is so different from these communities we see overseas. Life is challenging wherever you

are but these clients face more than most. Some of the hardships they face are tackled when they have community assets brought about because these communities helped each other out with microbusinesses. What other ways are people being helped? Two of our partners have apprenticeship schemes. They provide loans to women who can start their own businesses and they also provide loans to young men and girls who are ready to learn a trade. They are then matched with masters of the trade so it becomes a masterapprenticeship relationship. This is different from a typical microfinance client who might buy two pigs to breed or bring produce home from the market

to cook and then sell food. It’s getting training in a formalised way and building confidence in business along the way, which leads to having access to a much bigger loan. They are both terrific programs because they look after the children of the women who have built up a successful business. They can have an apprenticeship whereas before they wouldn’t have had access. When a typhoon or a disaster hits these countries, the microbusinesses are protected by microinsurance – which they would never have had access to before. There was one story about a loan officer emailing us that he had rescued about 15 of his people from the floodwaters. The loans were rescheduled and Opportunity provided extra food and blankets. Microinsurance is one of the fastest growing areas in microfinance and its actually been working effectively when disaster happens.

How can we help? It’s easy to turn a blind eye to the rest of the world because people see helping as too hard or they don’t know what they can do to help, so instead they do nothing. We understand that it’s hard to relate to things that you don’t see or experience. Instead it becomes easier to compare ourselves with others closer to home. Kids these days may grow up and think that because they don’t have the latest phone that they are deprived, but in reality this is far from the truth. We know what is happening in other countries and we need to educate people about the real plight of others in a way that is not destructive or distressful. We see this as a justice issue. It is the right thing to do to help people with a hand up. The multiplier effect of the dollar that you give today being used time and time again, means that

the gift keeps on giving. It’s very impactful. The more loans made available, the more people and communities will be impacted. By supporting Opportunity International Australia, individuals or businesses can help families start their own businesses and transform their lives, their children’s futures and their communities. SOCIALPages undertake a trek – a literal journey into manhood. These are some of the ways King’s uses to tackle the issue of preparing students for life. Interestingly, since undertaking this program, our academic results have soared! Q. What are the key conversations you must have with your son?

FROM BOYS TO MEN BY EDWINA HUNTER Edwina caught up with Dr Tim Hawkes, a leading Australian educator and writer. He is currently the Headmaster of The King's School, Parramatta and the author of ‘Ten Conversations You Must Have with Your Son’. The book aims to equip parents with the necessary skills to help them guide their sons. Q. What was the driving force for you to help parents guide the lives of their sons towards adulthood? There has been a manifest betrayal by Australian schools of their students. With the rise of accountability measures such as HSC league tables and My School websites, we see a growing focus on preparing students for an exam rather than preparing them for life. I want to recover our mandate as educators to prepare students for the post-school world. A good education is something infinitely more rewarding than preparing a 34

child for a test. A good education is holistic and develops a child intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually. It was in recognition of this that we at King’s wrote the four books that make up the ‘Learning Leadership’ series. This four year leadership course covers topics such as values, resilience, courage and integrity. The course also looks at life skills, such as giving a speech, conducting yourself in an interview, writing a résumé, dealing with the cyber world and engaging in strategic planning. We also introduced a Boys to Men program into Year 10. Essentially, this is a life-skills program that covers things like financial literacy, etiquette, cooking, cleaning, car maintenance, sex and intimacy. Contemporary issues such as online dating and managing the cyber world are also explored. A novel was written for the boys called ‘Blizzard Lines’. It also covers many of these issues. Boys read the novel as they

Key conversations are conversations that are relevant. Typically, these tend to be conversations about love, identity, values, leadership, achievement, sex, money, health, living together and resilience. 'Ten Conversations You Must Have with Your Son' is designed to give parents a scaffold so they might undertake these conversations with even more success. Q. How do you advise parents to keep communication going within the home? I am troubled by the minimal amount of time some fathers spend with their teenage sons. It is sometimes measured in seconds in a day. With mums it is usually better. One of the problems with us dads is that in seeking to be significant outside of the home, we fail to be significant inside the home. Having been hard-wired to provide, we express our love by providing for the family. However, part of providing is giving our family emotional and social support. Our presence is hungered for by our sons as much as our provision. When we get home after a day at work, we need to resist the urge to retreat from the family. We need to www.livinglocalguide.com.au

SOCIALPages make ourselves available to our sons and our families. Parents who spend time talking with their sons provide opportunities for their sons to discuss their thoughts and feelings. This can make our sons emotionally healthier. They become trained to discuss their feelings and are less likely to bottle them up. In many ways it’s teaching boys how to cope. THERE ARE TRICKS TO INCREASING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IN THE HOME: • Dine together and ban the use of phones during meals. Use the time to discuss the high points and low points of the day. • Use car journeys to chat to the kids. Ban the headphones when travelling short distances in the car. • Make the kitchen table a conversation zone. Preparing meals together often leads to serendipitous conversations. • Use sport as a place and time to share non-threatening conversations. These trivial conversations are needed to build the bridge needed for the more 'heavy' conversations at other times. Q. How do you believe boys can achieve better academic and non-academic outcomes? What has often happened in our school system is that behaviours modelled by girls are considered good. However, behaviours modelled by boys are sometimes considered bad. You are a good student if you are quiet and sit

still – which typically does not describe the behaviour of a boy. Boys tend to enjoy a learning environment that is visual in its approach and technologically rich. At King’s we’ve had great success creating an environment where big learning tasks are dealt with by breaking it up into smaller chunks. We also use more competition and activebased learning. Allowing more processing time and teaching in an environment where there is good natural light can also help. We air-condition classrooms so that boys get rid of excess body heat after recess and music is sometimes used to help boys focus on learning. More than anything, boys, like girls, need great teachers. They need mentors that can inspire, that create a sense of wonder and disturb with new possibilities. Boys need teachers who enjoy teaching and have a great sense of humour. It needs to be remembered that boys are often physically big. We can assume a level of maturity, based on their size. However, boys may have V8 bodies, but they often have P-Plate minds. They don’t have the wisdom of experience. Their brain is still developing until they are 26 years of age. Our boys need to understand themselves. They need to know why they get grumpy in the early teen years. It’s because there is a 600% increase in testosterone – that’s an anabolic steroid – so they get roid rage. Therefore, they need to learn impulse control. A simple way to do this

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

is to teach boys about traffic lights – if you see red, STOP! If you see yellow, it doesn’t mean go faster, it’s a warning light. Only when things are green, is it good to go. I asked Director of Life Education, Dr Steven Middleton about the 'Boys to Men' course. I’m thrilled to be a part of this iconic program at King’s. It’s always exciting to be involved with something that is new and revolutionary like our ‘Boys to Men’ course. There is a lot of research that suggests that character education and academic education are complementary. King’s embraces this thinking so that values education is translated into the classroom as well as encouraged outside the classroom. The boys see a lot of the things we do in the ‘Boys to Men’ program as fun. They do cooking, etc. but we also do things like trying to defuse dangerous situations, learning how to relate to others and how to manage the complex issue of sex and intimacy. We are looking at developing boys who we can be proud of as fathers, husbands and sons. This process needs to start early. It’s easier to build a boy than mend a man.

Following a highly successful music tour by Barker students to Cuba in December 2012, the School’s Director of Music, Simon Smith, has just returned from three weeks in Havana assisting with the development of an international music festival, as well as observing classroom teaching practices, conducting clinics and donating music resources. "As a music educator, the school visits were of particular interest," Mr Smith said. "All Cuban music students possess advanced musical literacy skills. Music is so important to the Cubans – it is vibrant and diverse and there is a high importance placed on culture." Being able to spend time in the classrooms at the two schools visited, allowed Simon the opportunity to learn more about the teaching methods in the classroom that develop this high level of musical ability. This knowledge will be enormously beneficial to Barker’s music program.

"Every child is entitled to an education and to experience the joy of reading," said College Principal, Mrs Vicki Waters. "Reading is integral to education, so it is inspiring that our Indigenous scholars have embraced this worthy cause." At Pymble we recognise that education is the key to overcoming Indigenous disadvantage," said Mrs Waters. "This year we have 12 Indigenous students enrolled in the College’s Indigenous Scholarship program who are experiencing the benefits of an outstanding education." What Are You Doing?

Breakthrough at King’s – The Future Project

Being Successful Is Not One Dimensional

It’s the first question we ask when we wake up to ourselves. It doesn’t have to be asked in exasperation. The best way to ask it is with love, because then it’s a life-changer. It lets us step back, mindfully aware of where we are, who we are and where we’re going. We start to look at things the right way up. And then we can step forward with purpose, alive to the possibilities.

In a world first, a Science Research Centre has been embedded within an Australian secondary school.

International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) offers three year degrees for young people who are leaving school after Year 12. ICMS offers degrees in: Business Management, Event Management, Hospitality, International Tourism, Sport and Property Management.

Real philosophy begins with a heart-felt question like this and then it carries on by giving you the means to teach yourself. The School of Philosophy runs an 11week course on Mindful Wisdom which gives you a chance to reask the sorts of questions we’ve all asked at some time or another. Who am I? What does it mean to be mindful? What is it to be wise? The mindfulness of practical philosophy simplifies life, bringing clarity, understanding and decisiveness to our thoughts and actions. Term 3, 2014 commences Monday 15th September 2014. For further information: www.practicalphilsophy.org.au or call 9489 4333 46

The King's School, Parramatta, Australia’s oldest independent school is pioneering some of the newest ideas in Science. A unique Science Centre was opened at the School on 7 March 2014. It not only provides science laboratories for students but also provides research laboratories for scientists. The Science Centre houses up to 16 full-time scientists from universities and the commercial world, who are engaged in cutting edge research. Part of this research is undertaken in partnership with students from the school, thus allowing some students to engage in authentic scientific research. "We wish to move beyond the traditional expressions of school Science into genuine collaboration with those involved in cutting-edge discovery. We want to move beyond exam preparation to life preparation," said Headmaster, Dr Tim Hawkes. Visit www.thefutureproject.com for more information.

ICMS is unique in that we look at the ‘whole person’ and not just at their academic results. We realise that being successful in life is not one dimensional, there are many skills and attributes needed. Courses are highly practical and designed to equip young men and women with a range of skills that will help them confidently prepare for the workforce. Our unique learning methods include up to 1200 hours of skills in a practical setting allowing the transfer of knowledge and hands on experience to reinforce a young person’s confidence through our world class "Industry Training" programs. Over 97% of ICMS graduates are employed while they are still studying or soon after. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Philosophy was originally meant to change your life. Somewhere along the way, practical philosophy got hijacked by theoretical philosophy. It’s time to take it back. This eleven-week course draws on those philosophic ideas of East and West which have always led to mindful presence and effective action in work, study and every aspect of daily life. It’s a course for thoughtful men and women seeking to understand the nature of existence and the world in which we live. It explores the meaning of wisdom, truth, consciousness and the power of love. It is for all, regardless of education, occupation, age, race, political or religious beliefs. It gives you the tools to become more mindful, more connected and more alive. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Our children LOVE coming to school EVERY day... ...come and see why. Children are intrinsically motivated and are driven by their desire to become independent and competent. This is at the core of the Montessori approach to learning. Children like to make choices and explore concepts, largely on their own. The sense of achievement and reward is in the attainment of knowledge and the mastery of skills, and is not reliant on teacher praise, merit awards or adult approval. At Northside Montessori School, we honour and support the intrinsic motivation of the child. We offer an educational program for children aged 18 months to 12 years - “knowledge is reward itself”

TIPS FOR FINAL HSC EXAM PREPARATION BY MRS MEGAN KRIMMER, PRINCIPAL ROSEVILLE COLLEGE There are only a few short weeks until the HSC exams are well and truly finished and these weeks are often the trickiest, because they are so important for final preparations and can be easily frittered away.

• • Parents know that time flies and does so quickly when you’re not paying attention. Students have • waited thirteen long years for "their turn" to celebrate the final year and many are not only tired after their Trial Examinations but are also easily distracted by everything except studying as they approach "the end". • As a Principal, my advice to HSC students includes: • Adopt the mantra, "No regrets" in relation to your final weeks. • If you need a break, make it short and effective. Yes, you are tired, but a fantastically • long break awaits you after your final exam. 50

You cannot study 24/7 and cramming is rarely effective. Develop a realistic study timetable NOW that incorporates some down time. Recruit your family to help you stay on track. Ensure your study notes are complete. If they aren’t, complete them quickly. Take a moment to reflect on your reports, past assessments and exams over the past twelve months. Have you really taken your teachers’ feedback on board and incorporated their suggestions into your study? Use your allocated time for each subject revising material and ensuring you learn, know and understand the content. If there is something you still don’t understand, ask your teachers NOW. It’s not too late. As soon as you can, prioritise which past HSC exam papers and practice papers you can

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SPRING 2014

realistically complete under timed conditions within your study timetable. Use them to discover and refine the skills you need for each examination. Involve your teacher; ask them to mark your answers and to give you constructive feedback that you can work on in the time remaining. • If not already in a study group, join one and teach each other. Working out how to explain something to someone else is a great way to reinforce your own learning! • Your HSC responses will be enriched if you continue to read widely to deepen your knowledge and understanding. • Exercise, eat healthy food, drink lots of water, be inspired, get into the sunshine, try to smile at your parents and siblings – at least once a day, and do things that make you laugh. • Don’t feel guilty enjoying end of school celebrations (in moderation, of course), especially the activities you have planned around in your study timetable. However, guard your time well, especially if other things try to creep in. • Most importantly, YOU are not "a walking ATAR". An ATAR does not, and will not define you. What defines you as a person is who you are – your fine character, the way you treat other people and the mark you will make on the world. I wish every HSC student and their parents the very best through the last part of this year’s HSC journey. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

WHY DO MY GUMS BLEED?!? BY DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMED SCI, BDENT (HON) I am frequently asked by patients: “Why do my gums bleed? The most common cause of bleeding gums is gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum tissue which causes redness, swelling and bleeding. It is caused by the presence of bacteria due to a build-up of plaque and food debris around the gums.

Gingivitis can generally be prevented by good oral hygiene practices. Brushing for two minutes twice a day, combined with flossing daily, should minimize the plaque and bacteria that cause gingivitis. If you find flossing difficult, there are other cleaning aids designed to clean between the teeth, such as interproximal brushes. Over time some hard depositing may adhere to the teeth and this may need to be removed by a dentist as it is difficult to remove at home.

. . . flossing will help to remove the source of the inflammation, so even if it stimulates some bleeding, it is vital that these areas are cleaned with floss. A lot of patients will report that their gums bleed when they floss and this then dampens their enthusiasm for flossing. However, flossing will help to remove the source of the inflammation, so even if it stimulates some bleeding, it is vital that these areas are cleaned with floss. If left untreated, gingivitis can spread deeper into the tissues around the roots of the teeth and lead to periodontitis, which can cause mobility of the teeth, infections in the gum and ultimately, tooth loss. As I have mentioned in previous articles, periodontal disease has been linked to numerous other health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Therefore regular checkups and a daily oral hygiene routine are essential. If you are worried about your gums or you have persistent inflammation or bleeding, you should contact your dentist. alking is a great way to improve and / or maintain your overall health and fitness. Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. It can reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers. There is also very strong evidence to support improvement in all of these health conditions if they are already diagnosed.

Resistance exercise increases your muscle strength by requiring your muscles to lift, push or pull against something. This type of exercise can also increase bone density and help prevent osteoporosis, which is important as you get older. You really do not need any equipment to get started as body weight exercises are generally sufficient when your exercise programme is professionally designed and supervised by a Step into Life trainer.

SUMMER IS COMING! Spring is a great time of year. Warmer weather, more day light and summer is just around the corner. You can
always tell spring has sprung. All of a sudden you see people wearing shorts and skirts again. To some this is an exciting time. A time to go out and enjoy hot summer nights and beautiful sunny days with friends and

loved ones. To others, it’s a time where we begin to look seriously at ourselves and wonder what happened over winter. Did I really put on that much weight over winter? All of a sudden flashbacks of pizza, popcorn and chocolate come flooding back. What can I do? Where can I start and can I get into shape for summer? The answer is yes and now is the time

to get back into regular exercise. Two or three exercise sessions per week, tailored by a fitness professional, will have you in great shape in no time at all. You’ll also feel amazing as well. ARE YOUR SUMMER FEET READY?

BY WENDY DIXON, PODIATRIST AND OWNER OF FEET IN MOTION PODIATRY CLINIC

With summer just around the corner, it’s time for long leisurely walks along the beach, playing in the park, training for a fun run or just sitting under a tree with a good book. Whatever the plan, it’s time to take off your shoes and expose your feet to the world. Prepare your feet and get them into shape for summer. “Early intervention and prevention is the key to good foot health” says 56

Wendy Dixon, Podiatrist and owner of Feet in Motion Podiatry clinic. “Most foot problems can be easily and painlessly treated” she says. Wendy suggests a few simple tips to get your feet off to a bounding start to the warm weather.

some good advice. Are your feet flat (pronated) or high arched (supinated)? Are your feet narrow or wide? Do you need extra support or insoles? There is no ‘one style’ fits all when it comes to footwear.

Dry Cracked Heels

Exercise And Training

Prevention is key. Early removal of dry skin around the heels now will save pain in the summer months. The dry skin needs to be removed before you will benefit from application of creams. Wearing shoes with the heel enclosed helps prevent the heels from cracking.

Increased activity and training can lead to heel pain, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, knee pain and aching hips or back and can indicate that your feet aren’t giving you a stable base of support. A comprehensive biomechanical assessment may be required to assess poor foot function together with advice regarding a long-term management plan. See more online at www.livinglocalguide.com.au

YOURHealth Receiving gifts are symbols of love which carry with them emotional value. Gifts are a way to make another feel appreciated and special. It’s easy to purchase gifts if you are a natural spender but if you are the type of person who is a saver then chances are you will experience emotional resistance to the idea of purchasing an item in order to express your love. Moan and groan all you like, but remember this isn’t about you, it’s about meeting the emotional needs of another.

HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE? BY TINA VARTIS, FREELANCE WRITER In the last edition of Living Local, I looked at Gary Chapman’s book, the Five Love Languages and highlighted one of the languages discussed in the book. In this edition, we’ll be looking at the four remaining love languages. But let’s start with a quick recap first. The Five Love Languages is a book about discovering your unique preference when it comes to feeling loved and cared for. As I am sure most of us have discovered, what makes us feel loved, doesn’t necessarily align with how others feel loved. In order to bridge the gap, Gary Chapman has identified five unique ways in which we receive and give love, so that we are better able to communicate our love to another in a way that will be received: (1) Words of 58

Acts of Service is offering to do something for another in order to help them out or free up their time so that they can do other things.

Affirmation (2) Quality Time (3) Quality time is about Receiving Gifts (4) Acts of Service being fully present and (5) Physical Touch. Words of Affirmation can be verbal compliments, or words of appreciation or words of encouragement, which are best expressed in kind and humble ways. Supporting someone who has willingly begun a new health regime to lose weight is great encouragement, but pressuring someone to lose weight is not a form of encouragement. In fact, it has an adverse affect and your words can be received as judgemental and an expression of rejection. Quality time is about being fully present and engaged with one another rather than competing for attention caused by divided priorities.

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SPRING 2014

and engaged with one another rather than competing for attention caused by divided priorities. Physical Touch is the final love language. It can be a warm hug, a kiss, a touch, an embrace or sexual intimacy. As you can see, there are many ways we can express love to one another. Love is not a one off act, but a daily choice. Criticisms and demands drive wedges and stop the flow of love, but making a request about our needs at least gives the other person some direction on how we best feel loved and appreciated. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Sprite High Output Shower Filter This has been an amazing breakthrough for our family and is one of the best health decisions we’ve made. Literally from the very first shower after that water filter was installed, I noticed a big difference in the softness of the water, my skin was less dry and there was no chlorine smell. But here’s the miracle: my husband frequently gets eczema and since moving to the North Shore, his skin has been particularly irritated. Within two weeks of using the shower filter, the eczema had pretty much gone! From the first use he was no longer itchy after showering, the eczema on his neck fully cleared up, and his eyelids and arms significantly improved. In addition to the health benefits, the filter is easy to install, fits most showerheads, has a compact design, and only needs to be replaced once a year. www.truwater.com.au or 1300 554 878

HydROtwist Omnipure Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier This system is for drinking water and there are many great things about it. First, the water tastes great and this even influences the flavour of coffee! It features state-of-the-art technology in water purification which removes almost all potential hazards from the water, including salts, microorganisms, organic impurities, heavy metals, chemicals and

The Vitamix

BY EDWINA HUNTER

I was sceptical of the Vitamix, mostly due to the fact that I have a blender so why spend RRP $995. Now I am converted. I love everything healthy but don’t like to cook and I am time-poor which 60

pesticides, and then enriches the water with healthy minerals and balances it to the optimum PH level. It’s arguably the best reverse osmosis system available due to its superior quality, minimised wastewater and engineering. It’s easy to install, can move house with me, boasts a 10-year warranty, and while it’s a larger than the average filter, it’s compact design fits perfectly under my sink and I've never yet had an empty tank. It’s taken me a while to get around to filtering my water but drinking this clean water makes me feel much better and the thought of drinking anything else makes me think twice. www.truwater.com.au or 1300 554 878 is not a helpful mix. The best thing I found about the Vitamix was its speed, versatility and efficiency. Eating wholefoods in one, quick and great-tasting, recipe after another. Replacing the work of ten kitchen appliances and pulverising nutrient-packed peels, pulp and seeds. Plus it has a selfcleaning system! I especially love how it makes excellent soup in one simple action, making it steaming hot and ready to eat. Its blades reach speeds fast enough to create friction heat in four to six minutes. It also crushes and blends ice and frozen foods before enough friction heat is created to melt it! www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Healthy Hair What a wonderful experience I had at Anjeos Hair & Beaute in Pymble! Their products are what attracted me, but as it turns out, there’s so much more to like about this innovative and pioneering salon! Anjeos is also an eco-friendly salon and is focused on the health and well-being of their clients - I love that. They’ve been recognised for their energysaving appliances including lights and water-saving taps, plus the client-focused team is genuinely committed to excellence. They offer beauty treatments such as manicures while you get your hair done (I had an amazing hand

massage!) and the scalp therapy treatment head massage was heavenly. Mums are welcome with children (although it was definitely more relaxing without my children), relax with herbal tea or organic coffee, and they open Wednesday evenings so you can shop on Thursday night. Now for the products, first, Pureology, this brand is committed to sustainability and it boasts a zerosulphate, vegan and anti-fade complex, not to mention that it’s made my hair smell and feel great. Similarly, INOA ammoniafree colour range uses the latest science and technology: an oilbased delivery system that helps respect and protect the hair. The ammonia-free hair colour is

certainly appealing: no eye-watering, nose-tickling, headacheinducing fumes to breathe in, no scalp-itching, and no ammonia leeching into my body. The soft honey-gold tint, while subtle, has brought depth and texture to my winter tresses; perfect for spring. It’s my kind of salon – health conscience and a complete experience.

TRU WATER FILTERS BY REBECCA LOUIE When it comes to water, I've
always been an out-ofthe-tap kind of girl; it’s easily accessible and almost free. There’s a big topical debate about water, some advocate that tap water is just fine, others like to filter or purify (and the scope of systems is vast), while it's reported that $12.8 billion is spent on bottled water each year. But what's actually in the water I drink? I like to know what I'm putting in my body - I read food labels, buy organic when I can, and research lots before making informed choices - so, I started reading about water. Did you know that Sydney Water supplies water to your home through a network of 21,000 kilometres of water pipes, 251 reservoirs and 164 pumping stations, and it's monitored by testing for over 50 chemicals and contaminants? Since there's a seemingly endless amount of research and discussion on the internet, I gave my online research a rest and got some local knowledge. To my surprise, I learnt much more at Truwater in Gordon than I expected. I expected to walk out of Truwater with a solution for my kitchen drinking water (and I did). Any sort of filter can improve the quality of tap water. Different ones remove different things: anything from contaminants to metals to chemicals such as chlorine or even fluoride. But, I

never dreamt of walking out with a shower filter! A shower filter? Have you ever tasted chlorine in your water? Chlorine is added to our water supply, to remove bacteria and other harmful microorganisms, at levels considered safe. With each pregnancy, one of my first symptoms has been smelling and tasting chlorine in the tap water. When I moved back to the North Shore, this was also the case; I could taste the chlorine and, no, I wasn’t pregnant. Anecdotally, the level of chlorine in the water seems to be higher around certain areas of the North Shore. Surprisingly, 50% of our daily water exposure comes from our shower, however, when you use hot water, chlorine vapourises, steam collects in your shower stall and you inhale harmful fumes. According to Truwater staff, a shower filter is arguably more important than filtering drinking water and, after using it, I tend to agree – read my review and miracle story on page 60 to find out the reasons why. Truwater staff were knowledgeable, helpful and acknowledged that people have many different needs and preferences when it comes to water. I was really impressed with the choice of high-quality products at really reasonable prices, everything from basic filtration to reverse osmosis purification; whole-house, undersink, bench top, and jug-style systems; and varying capacities.

As a side-note, I feel it’s important to acknowledge how fortunate we are to live in a country with sanitary conditions and access to clean drinking water. According to WHO & UNICEF (2012), 780 million people worldwide still don’t have access to clean drinking water! That’s around 35 times the population of Australia, who don’t have water to drink. In addition, women spend 200 million hours a day collecting water and every 21 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness. Thirty percent more water is required by 2040 to meet the needs of the growing world population and 1300L of water is required to produce every kilogram of wheat. When it comes to water, we certainly face many challenges. Whether you think you should filter or not, do some research, analyse what you find, consider the alternatives, talk to Truwater about the alternatives and make an informed choice. Water is definitely worth researching. Reviews of the two products I tried are on page 60. L1/900 Pacific Hwy, Gordon 1300 554 878

Sarah Broad Sarah Broad is but one of the superstars in our Vision Personal Training studio in St Ives. In just over 12 months this amazing woman has now lost over 50kg and there is no sign of her slowing as she gets closer to her ultimate goal! Before starting her training with Vision, Sarah felt she had tried everything and failed. All the changes she thought she would need to make were way outside her comfort zone and more importantly she didn’t actually know how she could create change in her life. Just recently we asked her how she felt about change at the time she started and how she knew

she was ready. "I didn’t even think about how big the challenge was. I just started as quickly as I could and trusted my trainer. This hasn’t changed in my time with Vision. I was really nervous about not gaining the results I wanted but this very quickly changed when the weight kept coming off." For Sarah, the best thing about losing the weight has been that she gets to be "a truly active person again". She has been walking, running, cross training and she has even started horse riding again! "I ran the Blackmore’s Bridge Run last year. Nine kilometres but it could have been a marathon – I felt on top of the world – a natural high!" Sarah’s Vision for herself this time next

year is that she will have lost another 25 kilos and will be a "fitter, leaner person, re-evaluating her goals to keep motivated." We’re behind you, Sarah!

"Vision has been the best experience for me, not only has it made me physically stronger it has also made me mentally stronger. Vision has helped me gain more confidence not only in my body image but also around my friends and at school. The changes I have seen in myself over the past year are positive ones that I know I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life. They have helped me to see the full potential in all aspects of my life. Through the help of my trainer Kimberley and a positive change in my diet, I have been able to adopt a new way of thinking in regards to my health. Overall, my time at Vision has been a life changing and motivating experience and I can’t thank the staff, in particular Kimberley, enough for the encouragement I have received which has provided me with the right tools to succeed in my weight loss and fitness journey!" SCHOOL CLASSROOM IN NEED OF REBUILDING

A DARK CLASSROOM WHEN IT IS COLD OR WET

Gandaki School in Nepal BY ANNE PRESCOTT, UTS MATHEMATICS TEACHER EDUCATION Gandaki is in a remote village in Nepal about 5-6 hours west of Kathmandu. It is in a poor region of Gorkha and the school and toilets are badly in need of renovation. The Rotary Club of Wahroonga has joined with Sambhav Nepal to support the teachers and students in this region www.sambhavnepal.org. In remote villages, school buildings and toilet facilities are often in very poor condition. In some places school toilets are non-existent and those that do exist are in shocking condition with no way of cleaning them. These unhygienic conditions not only lead to many illnesses but are a cause of high absenteeism and drop outs especially among girls as the girls are constantly missing school for a week each month www.ekantipur.com/2014/01/20/ national/130-salyan-schools-lacktoilet/384171.html Until sanitation problems are resolved, girls education will continue to decline, so we have been raising money to provide Gandaki school with much needed decent toilets. 64

The Gandaki school buildings are also a problem. During monsoon season, the roof leaks and the rain comes through causing the dirt floors to be become mud. There is no electricity and no glass in the windows so when it rains or gets too cold the shutters have to be closed causing the classrooms to become dark. With water damaged furniture, the conditions for both teacher and students are extremely difficult. As a teacher I cannot see how the students can gain a good education in these conditions. We plan to rebuild the school buildings with a concrete floor and decent walls with a Perspex panel between the top of the wall and the roof so light always comes into the room. The teachers from Gandaki have been a part of the Teacher Professional Development sessions that we have held every January since 2011. Until recently, primary teachers only needed a Year 8 education and there was no teacher education at all. This has been changed to a Year 12 education but still no teacher education – especially in

LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SPRING 2014

rural areas. Many of the teachers walk for more than two hours each way to these professional development sessions because they find them worthwhile. We have worked with them on lesson plans, classroom management and activities that help students learn concepts. Last January we had a group of primary Mathematics teachers, primary English teachers, and secondary Mathematics, Science and English teachers. It is exciting to see the joy of the teachers as they learn new techniques and become more confident in their teaching. EASTERN ROAD QUALITY MEATS BY ALLAN WALDON, EASTERN ROAD QUALITY MEATS Spring is on the way and it is a great time to try some fantastic spring lamb. The Farm "We know them we grow them." Our farm in the Central West is looking really good. We have plenty of grass and the cattle look fantastic. We just bought a new Murray Grey Bull and he is now living it up with the cows. With plenty of new calves, it’s a good time on the farm. So there is plenty of tasty grass fed beef at the shop now through till after Christmas. We also just purchased a complete stud of Dorper Sheep. The management of these sheep is made easier as there is no need to shear them. You can look at these sheep on the web at Top Deck Dorper Stud. We have been breeding Dorpers for a few years now and this line of sheep is some of the best in the country.

New Products Season’s Best. Try some of our Dorper Lamb or Dry Aged Beef from Our Farm. We have plenty of new products ready to go, these include bottled Elgaar Organic Milk From Tassie, Artisan Breads from Brasserie Breads, a great range of good French and Australian cheeses and damn good Bilpin Apple Pies! We also have a great selection of seafood. This year we will have the best Turkeys ever. They are Leadoux Turkeys from Victoria and we will be the only supplier of these in Sydney. These are genuine free-range birds. I have checked them out and the farm practices and we are very excited to have them this year. Our beef from the farm is fantastic. Our cattle are all raised on our farm grass feed. We work hard on animal welfare

and our cattle are not stressed nor do we ever work our cattle with dogs. With our new cool room we are able to dry age our beef for 21 plus days. Why not try some on the BBQ!

News Our new cool room is finished and running, giving us more room to dry age our beef from the farm. I have also been lucky enough this year to spend some time with the extraordinary Will Studd and now know a lot more about cheeses! Find us on Facebook and check out all the latest farm photos and shop news and watch out for our Super Specials. DO A DAY TRIP - TreeTop Adventure Park BY SUE HANDISIDES If you are looking for a fantastic outdoor adventure for the young and the young at heart – I would absolutely recommend Treetop Adventure park. I took my family and a couple who recently arrived from the USA to the Central Coast location, about an hour north of Sydney. Imagine swinging though the Australian bush on a flying fox after having navigated a rope ladder swinging from one tree to the next, a Tarzan swing or maybe a tightrope walk. Soon after arriving in the beautiful bush location our sons Oliver and Jasper kitted up for the children’s course. The children were connected by a continuous belay system, which kept them safe while they navigated the challenges of the 4 courses,

66

KEES & CHELSEA GROENEWEGEN

which increase in difficulty as you progress from one to the next. It took Jasper (3yrs) a little time to get over his fears and it was great to see the self-confidence he gained from conquering the course. Oliver who is almost six took to it like a duck to water and completed each course several times. The staff were really great with the kids, keeping a watchful eye on their progress. A couple of times they helped in encouraging the kids through a challenging section, which was a great achievement on completion. Our kids both enjoyed the thrill of making it to the flying foxes and were disappointed when time was up. We have relived the adventure many times since and had several (hundred)

requests to go again. Next it was time for the adults to get our gear fitted and listen to our safety briefing. We tested our skills on the practice course then went on to the 4 courses. Along with all the other climbers we were kept safe by a helmet, 2 Clic-it Smart carabineers, a harness and we were also provided with a pulley for the many flying foxes we found around the courses. The courses are set high up in the beautiful gum trees and surrounding bush. It reminded me of tree climbing as a child who grew up in the Australian bush but this was so much higher, more organised, safer and loads of fun. Each challenge mastered was an achievement and helped gather confidence for the next one, which was more difficult. Even though you are connected by the 2 Clic-it Smart Carabineers and can’t fall, it still goes against ones natural desire www.livinglocalguide.com.au

to step onto a swinging piece of wood and reach for the next swinging piece of wood instead of just holding on tight to a nearby solid object. There are plenty of different challenges, all to get the heart racing. Several times I found myself doing a quick inhale before committing to the next move on the course. The course was challenging but safe. As we progressed through the course we would come across a challenge that we had previously completed before, but of course it was just a little higher than before and the step was a little further than before. The first 3 courses, Blue, Green and Red are available for those aged 10 and over who are above 1.4 metres tall. The final course, the Black Run is available for those 16 and over. What we liked about the courses is that it had something for everyone. Whether it be a family outing, kids party, a team building event or an action date, everyone would be challenged in a safe environment. We are already planning our next visit.

FLEAS & TICKS CAN CAUSE DISEASE!

Get parasite control this spring! BY DR MARTINE PERKINS, BVSC(HONS) MRCVS, MACVS, PYMBLE VETERINARY CLINIC

Along with the warmer weather also comes a greater risk of your pet being affected by the dreaded paralysis tick and the prolific flea. Along with the harmful affects on your pet these insects can also act as a vector for disease in people. The paralysis tick is the single most dangerous parasite for dogs on the eastern coast of Australia. One single tick is capable of causing paralysis and death in both cats and dogs. Native animals such as our possums and bandicoots are the native hosts. In other countries these ticks carry other diseases harmful to people and research is currently

underway in Australia to see if such diseases may be here too. Certainly in Australia some people are affected with various illnesses when bitten by a tick. Such diseases vary from allergic reactions, unusual immune responses and signs consistent with a lymes-like disease. Following a recent Australian survey it was discovered that: • Nine out of ten dogs living in tick areas are not properly covered for Paralysis Tick control • 30% of dog owners believe a monthly oral flea tablet covers their dog for Paralysis Ticks The simple flea is also largely underestimated! A single female

flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day! In the warm temperatures, it doesn’t take long for a few fleas to become hundreds, even thousands, turning your home into a summer breeding ground for fleas. Not only can fleas cause severe skin irritation and allergic reactions in your pet but it can also carry other bacteria within it which may harm not only your pet but possibly you or your family. A disease commonly called "Cat Scratch Fever" is spread by cats and their fleas to humans and can occasionally cause severe disease in the young or immune compromised person. By controlling the fleas on your pet you can help prevent further transmission of such diseases. Given that we know that fleas, ticks and other insects such as sandflies act as vectors of diseases to humans and animals it is highly recommended that you discuss effective parasite control on your pets with your veterinarian.

IT’S TIME YOU HAD A BRAZILIAN! BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS, TURRAMURRA GARDEN CENTRE No, not that sort! I’m talking about the plant that I cannot rate highly enough. An architectural but soft leafed member of the Iris family with beautiful flowers that pop open in their dozens - I am of course talking about the wonderful Brazilian Walking Iris (Neomarica gracilis). With leaves that are formed in a fan shape, this absolute gem of a plant is one of the easiest to keep. Have it indoors in a bright area or outdoors in partial to full sun. Around late winter you’ll see a swelling in the leaves – this is the flower bud in its early stages. When you see the creamy coloured buds emerge, you know it won’t be long before the full splendour of the flower unfurls. Be sure to look at the plant every day so you won’t miss the great reveal. Whilst this plant blooms most profusely over a period of a couple of months through spring, spot flowering can occur through to the end of summer. However, there is a slightly sad side to this story as each flower lasts for only one day. But, even for those precious few hours, you can still appreciate the beautiful white and blue flowers.

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

This plant propagates itself by producing plantlets that form at the tips of the flower stalks. When the new plant is formed, it bends downwards and if it is ground grown, it will take root. This new plant then repeats the process, which is why it’s called a “Walking Iris”. Plant it in a tall pot or a hanging basket to best show off these pendulous fronds. It requires moderate watering and applying Garden Gold™ fertiliser four times a year which will ensure the arching green sword shaped leaves will remain glossy and the flowers will delight you each year.

COMPETITION: WALK OFF WITH A BRAZILIAN WALKING IRIS Send us an email by 30th September and in 25 words or less, tell us why we should give you a Brazilian plant! Send your inspirational, funny or just downright cheeky entry to askus@ elegantoutdoors.com.au with the subject heading "WANT A BRAZILIAN". (One entry per email address. Winner will be notified by email on 1st October 2014. Your email address may be added to our database for our own marketing purposes.
