EDITOR’S NOTES Did you know that there are 105.2 male births per 100 female births? This issue we have special guest writers Dr Sean Seeho and Jenny Stuart, who share the stories of 3 women and their pregnancies. These 3 women’s journeys include the wonderful joy of having a newborn baby and, unfortunately the case for many, the terrible pain. Dr Seeho and Jenny Stuart, amongst other researchers, dedicate much of their time to helping families have a healthy and happy pregnancy through clinical, laboratory and population-based research. As you gear-up for the holiday season and New Year enjoy reading our other articles in this issue, which are focused on health and well-being. BEAUTYtips
With Christmas just around the corner, it’s easy to be overwhelmed walking through the cosmetics floor this time of the year. Most makeup counters are spilling over with limited edition holiday palettes, hampers and gift sets to fill out those Christmas stockings! These pre-packaged gifts are a good option provided that you can be certain the colours and inclusions will suit your loved ones. Otherwise it can be an expensive makeup gift that doesn’t get used to its full potential. If you would rather choose your items separately and personalise them yourself, here are five of my favourite makeup gifts that are guaranteed to please! By makeup artist Wendy Kwei
1
A high end lipstick It’s the best way to spoil someone who loves good quality makeup that’s wrapped in indulgent packaging. Brands like Chanel and Tom Ford are at the top of their game when it comes to well designed, decadent cases. It might be tricky getting the shade right, so make sure you’re familiar with the returns policy, and that the product can be taken back and exchanged if it hasn’t been used.
2
A makeup brush (or two!) An investment in everyone’s makeup bag. They are an essential tool that makes makeup application easy and blending like-a-pro possible. Most makeup brands offer a selection of brushes, but the best place to start is with your gift recipient’s favourite
6 LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2011
brand. Speak to the artists on the counter and choose a versatile brush (like a blush brush or an eye-shadow brush) that you know she will enjoy using regularly.
3
Nail polish Most girls would agree that their nail polish wardrobe is never complete! To keep on trend for summer 2012, choose bold, bright and metallic colours. If you’re not sure how these shades will look on the person you are buying them for, check-out OPI’s website and their “try on this colour” web tool. It’s a fabulous way to see exactly how the polish colours look on many different skin tones.
4
A makeup book I don’t know any makeup enthusiast who wouldn’t love a classic, hard back makeup book (think Kevin Aucoin) to add to their collection. These books are timeless, inspiring and capable of pulling someone out of a makeup rut and reinvigorating them again!
5
A makeup bag
It’s the one item that holds all our products together, yet something most of us don’t change often enough! A good makeup bag should have zip locked compartments so brushes can be kept separate, waterproof fabric that can be wiped regularly for good hygiene and shallow sections that only allow you to hold three or four products in it (and not hoard!). It’s not only a great gift to receive, but one that will motivate her to sort through all old makeup to start the new year afresh! For more makeup and beauty tips visit Wendy’s website at www.wendykwei.com to read her makeup blog.

Name: Adrienne McLean Business: The Speakers Practice I have 3 children, a loving husband and an elderly father who I am the primary carer for, so it has been a juggling act between having a business and a busy home life. What I do, is fit the business around my family, which is ideal! A good calendar and a diary is a necessity to balancing everyone’s needs.
PERSONAL & WORK LIFE The Speakers Practice held the Let’s Celebrate Innovation Lunch, 2011. A lunch to celebrate the many successes that people, who work from home, have achieved.

Christmas HAS ARRIVED As the year draws to a close, so too does the wet season in Nepal. This year has seen steady growth and progress, with projects now up and running in five schools. Sabita, the first girl from her village to finish high school and go on to university, recently started her three-year nursing course at university. This is a very exciting time and we are seeing history in the making.
by Allan Waldon ICMS STUDENTS Our inaugural Melbourne Cup function, at The Cook’s Garden in North Turramurra, raised funds to specifically help support Sabita in her studies. Heidi Healy from Chadwick Real Estate and Edwina Hunter from Living Local Guide did an amazing job in organising a fantastic day, which raised almost $2000! The atmosphere was abuzz with the laughter of so many supportive locals, each sporting their finest hat or fascinator. Everyone enjoyed participating in the silent and live auctions, raffles and sweeps, in this perfect venue. It was all topped off with great wine and delicious food! It was a most successful event. We would like to extend a special thanks to the wait staff,

her further education including her boarding, books, and university fees (approximately $4000 per year).
A few Wahroonga Rotarians also held a Melbourne Cup lunch, raising an additional $500. Well done to all!
Fundraising Christmas cards are now available from Eastern Road Quality Meats for only $1 each with all funds going to the Nepal school projects. We also have a huge perfume raffle, worth $1500 with tickets for sale at $5 each or 6 for $20. The raffle will be drawn on 17th December 2011, just in time for Christmas.
All the funds raised from these events will contribute to helping make Sabita’s dream of becoming a nurse a reality. Specifically, the funds will contribute to the costs of
Throughout the year, Warren and Dypna Sly, Ray and Pam Sleap, and Heidi Healy and Scott Chadwick of Chadwick Real Estate, have all been very involved and a great support base for all our projects in Nepal. As usual, Richard Jackson works nonstop, putting our projects together.

school’s innovative educational program, the LNSGM (Loreto Normanhurst Student Growth Model), continues to support the school’s diverse students towards excellence. This is evident, not only in the HSC, but in successes throughout the student body in oratory and debating, sport, music, drama, and a wide array of extra-curricular pursuits. The essential element of a Loreto education is about being a person for others and our students demonstrate this so well each day. Students of Year 12 lead the school and their House groups, always finding time for younger students. The vertical pastoral care system is strong at Loreto Normanhurst where each student is known for their own uniqueness. Staff at Loreto Normanhurst care for the students and know them well, building good relationships that assist both pastorally and in the learning realm. The FACE (Faith, Academic, Community, Extracurricular) Curriculum is an holistic program which is at the core of the work done at the school. In short, Loreto Normanhurst is… such an exciting place to be.

The greatestGIFT! What greater gift, than the gift of a newborn child? The joy of having a healthy baby is universal. Although most mothers have uncomplicated pregnancies, this is not always the case. For a large number of families the arrival of their new baby is marked with sadness. The festive season is often a particularly difficult time for these families. In the lead up to Christmas I interviewed three mothers who had very different experiences. Jenny had a healthy pregnancy; but for Veronica and Amber, their pregnancies were far from straightforward. Interestingly, Jenny and Veronica both work at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research where their focus is on helping all mothers have a healthy pregnancy. When a pregnancy fails or a baby dies, families have a desperate need to know why. The death of a baby is devastating and the loss of a life unrealised. These two young researchers are devoted to finding an answer to this question and ensuring that every baby has the best chance to be born healthy. AMBER’S STORY… Amber delivered identical twin girls, Hannah and Sophie in June 2011. When Amber went into premature labour at 26 weeks of pregnancy; baby Sophie was stillborn. Hannah weighed just over a kilogram at birth and spent her first 93 days of life at the Royal North Shore Hospital. Even when allowed home, Hannah required oxygen to help her breathe. Amber and her husband Pete are also parents to a daughter Zoe, who is almost three.

true miracle! Once she was moved to the High Dependency Unit, a massive weight was lifted from our shoulders and with each day our confidence grew.
I assume that Hannah’s development is being closely watched. How is she progressing and are there any special considerations in parenting her?
She is doing remarkably well. I’ve been told that premature babies like Hannah are usually very small. However, Hannah’s weight and height are normal for her age, which is incredible. The only real concern is the possibility of her catching respiratory infections due to her Liversidge initial lung1950’s problems. If so, Digger she would be required to go back on oxygen for a short while. Apart from that, we will be treating her exactly the same way as our first child, Zoe. We will not be wrapping her in cotton wool!
How do you plan to spend Hannah’s first Christmas?
A quiet lunch with family and most probably spoiling her rotten! VERONICA’S STORY… Veronica is a mum and a medical researcher. She has experienced first-hand the complications that can occur during pregnancy. Her specific area of interest is preeclampsia, which she developed in her first pregnancy. Preeclampsia, also known as toxaemia, is a condition that can occur in pregnancy, and is associated with high blood pressure and fetal growth problems. Veronica is now expecting her second child. She is passionate about research and finding the cause of preeclampsia.
As a mother and as a researcher, what are your hopes for the future?
My hope is for all mothers to have safe pregnancies and healthy babies. Preeclampsia still causes the deaths of many mothers and babies worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Even in Australia preeclampsia remains a very significant problem. As a researcher I can help find solutions to problems that affect pregnant women. Although the Australian Government provides funding for research, more funds are needed. Research makes a difference by bringing understanding to what is currently unknown, giving hope to those who have been affected by hopelessness and providing answers where is currently only angst. Discoveries here, in Australia, can have the potential to help millions of women across the world.

I have a new respect and admiration for the wonderful doctors who save the lives of babies like Hannah, and for that matter – mine! can be both a blessing and a curse. Although aware that many women develop preeclampsia, never did I expect that I would be affected. I became slightly concerned during the latter part of my pregnancy, because I had very swollen legs and feet. At about 36 weeks I decided to go to hospital for a check-up as I had some concerns. Once there, I was told I had preeclampsia. The obstetrician decided it was best if I remained in hospital until the birth of my baby. I was overjoyed that we were both okay. Holding her for the first time made me realise how lucky we were. I am so thankful that in Australia we have such good medical care.

My research is focused on examining genes and proteins in the placenta that may be dysfunctional in these women. What I appreciate most is the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of women at such an important time in their lives - that of having a baby. Tens of thousands of women worldwide continue to die every year from preeclampsia. Even in Australia, thousands of babies are born very small. Helping to find a reason why some pregnancies don’t end well is a very strong motivator! I also love being part of a group of researchers who are dedicated to improving the health of our youngest Australians.
In the area of your research, what do you find hardest and see as the greatest challenge?
Much of science is not about the successes that we all celebrate, rather it is the months and years of failure that eventually lead to a breakthrough. Being patient and not too disheartened by failures is sometimes hard. The greatest challenge? The uncertainty and difficulty in obtaining funding for research. Although we are very competitive in obtaining government grants, often this is insufficient as research is expensive. Grants, apart from being difficult to get, are usually for only a few years which means that I can never be sure I will still have a job when the grant ends. That is why external donations are such an important part of us being able to continue our work. 22 LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2011
Not really, I know that most pregnancies have good outcomes despite some having complications. My research has also allowed me to see first-hand many complicated pregnancies that were treated with the highest levels of expertise and care, resulting in a healthy baby and mother. This gave me much reassurance.
Has becoming a mother changed the way you approach your research?
Being a mother does affect the way I see many things in life, including what I want to achieve in research. It has made me even more motivated to find reasons why some women, unfortunately, have pregnancies that do not end happily. Instead of just being interested in genes and molecules in the lab, I am now focused on how my work will translate to helping pregnant women and their babies. Being mum to a very busy boy has also made me more efficient with my time, prioritise what is important, and improve my female ability to multitask! (laughs)
How do you plan to spend this Christmas with Oliver?
We plan to spend Christmas with our families in Sydney, eat well and recharge for next year! We love food and travel, and often plan when and where we might go to eat or have a short break. PilatesSHAPING
Have you always wanted to find an exercise program that is tailored to your needs, that constantly challenges you then leaves you feeling refreshed and energised, and is never boring? You should consider pilates. Pilates was invented in the early 1900’s by the legendary Joseph Pilates, and is now popular world-wide. People who do Pilates regularly feel they have better posture, are less prone to injury, and experience better overall health. Pilates can target specific areas of the body and provide a full-body workout while realigning poor posture and strengthening the core. The toned, lengthened and strong body that comes with regular Pilates is just a bonus! Pilates is suitable for everybody! It’s for men and women, those recovering from injury, sufferers of back pain, elite athletes and dancers, and for pre-natal and post-natal clients. Pilates can be done in group sessions or individually.
Something for you to try at home: Like anything, practice is very important for Pilates so doing some basic exercises at home is ideal. Try this fundamental movement, which is key to optimal Pilates performance. Set aside just ten minutes, three times a week to practice. • Pelvic curl: works the abdominals, glutes and hamstrings, and also gets the spine moving and stretching. Lie on the floor, squeeze your bottom to raise your spine and pelvis off the floor to a bridge position, then roll the spine back down starting from the shoulders.
When doing Pilates, there are a few important things to remember. • Breathing – In Pilates we breathe into the back and sides of the ribs, rather than the stomach. As you inhale push the ribs to the back and sides, and as you exhale pull the ribs down into the waist and draw the navel in toward the spine. • Control – Pilates is about precision, not big movements. Make every movement controlled and only increase the resistance or range once you have mastered the basics. • Centreing – Each exercise begins in the core. Initiate each movement from the connection of the abdominals by gently pulling the navel into the spine. This ensures you have the support of the core as you move. Pilates exercises are performed on a mat or by using various pieces of specialised equipment, such as those described below. • Reformer - a gliding platform used for sitting, kneeling, standing or lying down. The user pushes and pulls off the foot bar in a controlled manner, while the tension in the springs gently works the muscles. With its sophisticated system of springs, straps and pulleys, unlimited exercises can be performed on this surprisingly versatile apparatus. • Wunda chair - resembling a stylish little stool, it is not necessarily used to sit on but to strengthen arms and legs while stabilising through the torso. • Cadillac – also known as the trapeze, this is essentially a raised horizontal table-top surrounded by a four-poster frame on which various bars, straps, springs and levers are fixed. Standard models include a push-through bar, a roll-down bar, a trapeze or cross bar, arm springs, leg springs, thigh and ankle cuffs and even fuzzy hanging loops. The number of exercises that you can do on the Pilates apparatus is endless, meaning there is always something new to learn and different ways to work. Here are some of our favourite exercises. • Little frogs - works the core as well as the hamstrings and trains the body to allow the legs to move freely, while the rest of the body remains stable. Uses the reformer whereby straps are attached to the feet, part of a pulley system which uses the resistance of springs. • Standing leg press – works the glutes and hamstrings while also challenging balance and co-ordination. This standing exercise is performed using the wunda chair and has many variations to increase the challenge.

Krystyna of Somatherapy has extensive professional training and experience in the treatment of many forms of myofascial pain and dysfunction. She is a certified practitioner in the clinical application of the Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy (FSM), with a diploma in Myofascial Release and Government accreditation in Tactile Therapy (highest level). Traditional approaches to chronic pain are not always effective. Krystyna provides therapy with a difference, changing what is possible in pain management. She offers highly specialised, non-invasive and painless manual therapy, in combination with the latest advances in Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy.
FSM therapy represents a significant improvement in rapid pain control and injury repair stimulation. It uses currents in the micro ampere range, 1000 times less than TENS and below sensation threshold. It is an exciting new way of treating nerve pain and muscle soreness. New injuries heal in record time. It has been shown that FSM may reduce tissue inflammation by 62% in four minutes. Accelerated healing of ligaments and tendon injuries by over 250% has been reported. Clinical experience indicates that FSM is effective for treatment of soft tissue injuries, postsurgical scars, headaches, temporomandibular joint
pain, bursitis, tendonitis, nerve pain from traction injuries, disc bulges, compression neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome, knee joint pain and more. FSM may help patients recover from chronic myofascial pain that didn’t respond to other commonly used therapies. FSM instruments have been TGA approved for pain relief in 2001. The therapy is gentle, safe (no side effects) and clinically proven to be effective. To discuss treatment options please call Somatherapy Clinic in Gordon on 9844 5406. We are here to help you. SOLUTIONS TO A HEALTHY PREGNANCY Pregnancy can conjure images of relaxed, glowing women and perfect pregnant bellies. While the reality of pregnancy can most often be very different to this, there is still much that can be done safely and naturally to smooth the bumps of your pregnancy journey. By Kirrily Bartik, local naturopath, Sage Street Clinic The number one top tip for a healthy pregnancy is prevention! Before beginning to conceive, make sure your health is at its optimum. Be within a healthy weight range, exercise regularly, have healthy eating habits and most importantly manage stress levels. This tip is just as important for both partners. Pregnancy and parenthood is a time of huge change and being in top health will ensure you are best able to meet the challenge. It is just as important to continue these healthy habits during pregnancy. While fatigue, cravings, morning sickness and stress can make this a lot harder to achieve, every healthy habit you maintain, even if its not perfect, will make a difference. If you continue to exercise regularly when you can, eat healthy meals, get plenty of rest and relaxation, you will be helping your body perform the miracle of growing an entire human being! Every pregnancy is different and every pregnant woman has different health needs. Regular check ups with your doctor, obstetrician or midwife will mean you get the best care possible. Before beginning to conceive, see your GP for an overall check up and if you need help with 28 LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2011
lifestyle advice, now is the time to see your naturopath and make those healthy changes. Remember that more is less in terms of supplements and herbal medicines and always get advice about the quality and dosage of products before you start to take anything new. It is also essential to see your dentist before trying to conceive, as gum health can decline rapidly due to the hormonal changes of pregnancy and many procedures may not be ideal to do during pregnancy. Make sure there will be no complications during your pregnancy and that you have a healthy teeth and gum management plan to get you through the pregnancy. It is highly recommended to take a specially formulated pregnancy multivitamin before starting to conceive and throughout pregnancy and even breastfeeding. Much research supports the use of 500mcg of Folate (or vitamin B9) daily before and during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects- a common cause of early miscarriage. It is ideal to take a small amount of the remaining B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12) with your Folate to aid absorption and as co-factors for the
action of Folate. Iron is an essential nutrient during pregnancy as a woman’s blood volume almost doubles during this time. Iodine is another essential pregnancy nutrient to support healthy brain development of the foetus. A good pregnancy multivitamin will contain all these nutrients as well as vitamin D and calcium. Always take care to choose a quality multivitamin that is specific for pregnancy, with safe therapeutic doses of nutrients and does not contain any herbs. There are so many more helpful hints to make your pregnancy journey a comfortable one, possibly the most important, however is rest. It is very normal to experience fatigue, especially in the 1st and 3rd trimesters. Within reason, reducing extra activities you do and going to bed earlier will provide the extra energy to support that rapidly growing foetus. Take the time to slow down and enjoy your pregnancy. It is a complete life change and is followed by the biggest lifestyle adjustment you may ever experience; a newborn baby to care for! Enjoy being quiet, putting your feet up, going out less and being at home more. Be gentle with yourself- your body and your baby will certainly appreciate it too!

She said, “I felt there was a need for an independent clinic catering to all age groups. Many people are not aware that several of the larger chains of hearing clinics are owned by foreign-owned hearing aid manufacturers. I personally believe this situation is less than ideal. Such chains are geared to selling a particular brand of hearing aid and selling hearing aids is their primary business. Some chains I know of, offer their staff financial incentives to drive hearing aid sales.” You don’t have to be Einstein to see there could be issues with this. When you visit an audiologist, you want to know you will get expert advice on what all your options are. If you consider that globally there are around 130 hearing devices on the market, Melissa believes it is essential for people to “receive specialist advice on whether they even need a hearing aid, and if so, what are the best options to meet their needs.” Most of the time people who do seek assistance are very pleased with the outcome. Valerie Khoo, founder of the Sydney Writers’ Centre Keeping up with the Jones’, Jones’s or Joneses? Where does the apostrophe go? Apostrophes are one of the most misused marks. In some cases, they’re great for a laugh. In other cases, you create an unprofessional impression. Ever since school, Valerie Khoo loved writing but never considered it as a career. Instead, she studied to become an accountant and ended up working as an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Valerie worked hard to climb the corporate ladder but she knew in her heart she wasn’t passionate about this career. Her dream was to become a successful writer. Valerie founded the Sydney Writers’ Centre in 2005 with two courses and it is now Australia’s leading centre for writing training offering over thirty courses! I recently attended a course at Sydney Writers’ Centre, which I really enjoyed and found well worthwhile. Further to this, I interviewed Valerie about her passion for writing, her journey so far and the courses on offer.

Was the journey as you expected it to be?
When I finally left PricewaterhouseCoopers I went back to university. I did a part-time, postgraduate course in communication, majoring in journalism and public relations. I didn’t understand that writing could be a career. It was only after studying and working in public relations for two years that I entered into writing full-time. Fortunately, because of my background in accounting, I am not daunted by numbers or balance sheets. It is a great background to have and still benefits me in my newfound career.

How do you balance writing and running a business?
It is all about time management. You have to be ruthless, understanding your priorities. I can get distracted especially in the world of Twitter and Facebook, which I am quite into. When I have a big project, I know I have to work hard and make myself focus. I make sure I am rewarded to encourage myself: anything as little as going out to afternoon tea to buying myself a new dress.

. You are now living your dream, you are a regularly published writer and author of five books. What is your next goal? I’m writing a book about business at the moment. Its focus is about communicating in the business world. Too often we get bogged down with information, pie charts, and Excel spread sheets. It will contain stories to empower your staff and get your customers over the line.

Christmas Giving for
Cancer Research
Is your Christmas wish-list starting to look the same as last year? Australians spend billions of dollars on presents at Christmas time but if just a tiny percentage of the cost of these gifts went to cancer research, we could make such an incredible difference. The Australian Cancer Research Foundation gives 100% of the donations it receives to world-class research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Since inception, the ACRF has awarded almost $80 million to cancer research projects in Australia, including the development of the cervical cancer vaccine which has, since its release in 2006, changed the lives of women and girls in over 90 countries. This Christmas, your donation to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation in lieu of a Christmas gift will help to: • Purchase state-of-the-art technologies for testing and analysing new treatments for cancer • Fund collaborative projects between Australian and international cancer researchers, and... • Keep world-class Australian scientists working in the best possible facilities to ensure we defeat this terrible disease. Make your Christmas gifts count towards cancer research this year! For more giving options this Christmas, including charity hampers, cards and e-cards for your friends and family, please visit: www.acrf.com.au or phone 1300 884 988. 36 LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2011
ChristMEANS
During the first week of December the North Turramurra Church will be serving the community with a memorial service at 7:30pm on Wednesday 7th December. This is a service for those grieving the loss of a significant person in their life: a lost loved one, a miscarriage, or a missing person. This will be an opportunity to remember, respect and honour those who have meant so much to us. It is also a time for healing and tending to the wounds of loss. On Sunday 11th December at 7:30pm we hold our annual Christmas Carols On The Lawn with Turramurra North Public School. Animals, feathers and jumping castles are not normally what you associate with singing Christmas carols. This will be the scene for the North Turramurra carols on 11th December. Each year the North Turramurra Church of Christ and Turramurra North Public School combine their creative talent to present the Carols On The Lawn for the local community. On the church grounds before the carol singing there will be a number of family activities. These include a baby animal farm, plaster craft, colouring-in and jumping castle. Over 500 people joined in carol singing last year. Pastor Stephen Cathcart said, “last year was the best carols on the lawn we have had. It is great to be able to give back to the local community whilst celebrating the birth of Jesus”. One young member of the community, Nicholas, and his mother Angela, thoroughly enjoyed the evening. ”Where else can you go in northern Sydney and enjoy this community spirit at Christmas”, said the young mother of three. Our Christmas services are: Christmas Eve at 5pm and 11pm and Christmas Day at 9:45am-10:30am.
