PARENTING LOCAL’S ADVICE
can you recommend any Q Mums, alternatives to using bottles for
babies containing BPA (Bisphenol A) ie. plastic bottles which release toxins?
My first response... breastfeeding. Unfortunately it doesn’t always work out though. Apart from BPA bottles, I found glass bottles for sale online. Same look as back in the old days but with a rubber like wrap on the outside to soften any falls and the risk of breakage. They were really funky too! For the older child there are those metal drink bottles with bright designs on them or thermos bottles for hot/cold storage. Heaps of fun colourful and funky designs to choose from. They are more expensive than plastic BPA free alternatives though. Angie I read the recycling numbers. They tell you which plastics are considered safe and not. You can then look up each number online. If they are unlabeled, I call the manufacturer to ask about the plastic they use. Sam
There seems to be some controversy as to whether the bottles that state BPA free actually are. You can buy glass bottles for babies or metal drink bottles for children. As a mum who drinks lots of water I have bought a metal bottle from the health food store. It cost about $18 which was a bit of an investment but saves the environment and much healthier for mum. Rebecca A better alternative would be to use glass bottles for feeding babies. They do not release toxins into the milk and can be easily sterilized. Lesley
I only buy bottles made from glass or stainless steel. No leaching chemicals: no lead, phthalate, BPAs, unbreakable and it won’t even dent! Carmen For the older child there are metal drink bottles with bright designs on them or thermos bottles for hot/cold storage. Angie
Next issues’ question is: I’m not sure that I’m bonding with my baby. Isn’t this something that’s supposed to happen automatically? Please email answers to: editorial@livingnt.com.au

PIGMENTATION
PROBLEMS BY WENDY KWEI MAKE-UP ARTIST
For more make-up tips visit Wendy’s blog:
www.wendykwei.com/blog
Pigmentation problems (ie skin discolorations) are common across all skin types and ages. It usually appears in the form of freckles, moles or pink/brown spots that linger after a pimple or just irregular patches of colour. While it is primarily hereditary, environmental factors are causing it to occur more frequently. Clinique has recently launched another product to address the issue (by fading it) and you can probably expect more brands to follow. But off the shelf solutions don’t work for everyone, and pigmentation can persist even when you are treating it. The best thing to do is identify the source of the problem.
One of the most common triggers for pigmentation is an imbalance or change in hormones coupled with sun exposure. So if you’ve noticed pigmentation suddenly appearing, and you happen to be on the Pill, it may not be a coincidence. Speak to your doctor about it as there may another Pill, with a different mix of hormones, which has fewer side effects on your skin. Pregnancy and menopause also make some people susceptible to pigmentation issues. Even though the discolorations are only short term, and will eventually fade, it is easy to feel self conscious about it. Using make-up can really help you get through this period by evening out your skin temporarily. While it does require a higher level of make-up application skill than normal, a short lesson with a make-up artist will help you learn which products and techniques to use to mask the pigmented areas and not draw attention to it.

NEPAL
Australian Ambassador opens Local Projects In Nepal
Allan Waldon (local butcher at Eastern Road Meats) has been raising money via dog bone sales in his shop at Turramurra for some years now. In Early 2009 Allan visited Nepal with Richard Jackson, observing the needs of the schools. Toilets, or lack of them, as well as the rarity of books was their main concern. Visiting five schools and finding only a total of two books was a real worry. At the end of the trip, Allan and Richard made a point to see the Australian Embassy, seeking a small grant. It was three hours before the plane departed and things were put in place. The embassy only pay a small percent of applications and Richard was left with endless paper work!
On arrival home Allan spoke with a very nice couple in Turramurra about the need for books in Nepal, Georgiana and Cameron McCullagh. They generously donated a whole library, which was the first in that part of Nepal, in a school (Dharapani Secondary School) that will directly help many thousands of students for years to come. The Embassy Granted the project $5000, and a new impressive toilet block was started in Bhairibi Primary School. As we featured last issue, Allan and his daughter Sam went back to Nepal in early 2010 to check on the progress in the schools. Both projects were finished in May this year and to top things off, the Honorable Ambassador of Australia Ms. Susan Grace went to open the schools officially. To get to this remote part of Nepal it takes a three day return trip, which is not an easy drive. It is a hard four hour, four wheel drive trip, each way, travelling around cliff edges after you leave the last town. It was fantastic to see how the Australian Ambassador got behind and
supported a small Australian project. Wahroonga Rotary Club has been a wonderful supporter of our work in Nepal and a big thankyou to the new sponsors Heidi and Scott Healy from Chadwick First National. Allan has been thinking over the past few days, about where he would like the next year to go. A lot of people have benefited, there have been a lot of changes both here and in Nepal. Both Allan and his daughter have taken away more than they have given. Some ideas for sponsorship are: 1. There are two other schools in this direct area, Stiala Primary School, about 88 students, and Shankar Primary School, approx 105 students. ‘I want to find sponsers for both schools, basic sponsorship could start at about $2500 p/a’, said Allan. 2. Simple education on rubbish and bins. They have no idea about bins, or how to make the place look clean. 3. A student, girl, leaving Dharapani this year (June/July) wants to be a doctor. She is smart, shy and well spoken. ‘I understand very few, if any, girls get the chance to move forward with their education. This girl wants to be a doctor, or nurse. Education in nursing over three years, with boarding is around $11500. or $75 a week’, Allan Said. The waste and rubbish is a pet hate of Allans, and he would love to address this area on his next trip. ‘The other two ideas may be dreams but I’m sure we can tackle them’, said Allan. If you would like to get involved or find out more, please visit www.sambhavelnepal.org

Australian
ICON
Dick Smith is a man with vision. He has been taking a stand on population growth. Recently the NSW Government has passed drastic new planning laws whilst Dick has been travelling all over the country debating the changes Australians face. I was fortunate to meet with him in Lindfield to discuss his past endeavors as well as his current work. We pay a premium price for free range eggs, surely the chooks aren’t as important as our kids.
Dick Smith, a familiar Australian face, is often seen enlarged on the side of an Electronics store or in a helicopter or hot air balloon, undertaking a new expedition. Dick grew up in Ku-Ring-Gai and attended Roseville Public School. Dick was teased at school for his individuality, something we grow up hoping to achieve. “Unique” definitely describes Dick Smith. It’s his unique character that has earned him the title of an “Australian Icon”. His childhood dream was to be a steam train driver and he loved to watch the steam trains go past at Roseville station. As a child he admits to being mischievous, “I used to go drain crawling”, Dick said. “I would be horrified if one of my grandchildren did this as it is extremely dangerous! In Dudley Avenue Roseville was a drain I would disappear into, go right down to the bottom of Archibald Road, and continue almost up to Roseville Park by crawling through a small, narrow drain. One day my mother called the council to request extra bars on the drain. What she didn’t realise, was that I could even get between the new bars.”
At only 23 years old he discovered he was very good at running a business. His outstanding individuality led him to starting Dick Smith Electronics with just $610 in his pocket. At 38 years old he sold Dick Smith to Woolworths. Dick said, “When I sold to Woolworths I was absolutely confident I was making the right decision and I have never looked back. I thought at the time, imagine being 38 and having tens of millions of dollars in the bank to do worthwhile things and to put something back into Australia. It also allowed me the freedom to go adventuring and spend more time with my family. I’ve never regretted it.” He then started Australian Geographic, which was even more successful “I didn’t think I would then start another business and do even better.” Dick Smith has had many successes, aside from being a successful business owner, he has his
coverstory own food line, has undertaken many expeditions, was titled Australian of the Year in 1986, and the list continues. A definition of courage is “doing it afraid”. Dick is a risk taker and admits to “being afraid but doing it all anyway”
Roseville, just twenty minutes from the city. Now that’s impossible. It was good to see young kids living in the house, playing cricket on the front lawn as we used to, and even running around on the street outside.
Last month Dick Smith was back in the home where he grew up in Dudley Avenue, Roseville. He describes how the area has changed. The amazing thing is that the home I lived in for my first five years is still very similar. The backyard is very similar (even though it now has a swimming pool), the paling fence we used to climb over is still there, and even the tree we built a cubby-house in is still there. The main difference is that the house which cost about £1,600 in 1950 is now worth over $2 million, only affordable by the wealthy. So that’s the difference. In my day as a kid, a father who worked as a salesman and a mother who was a housewife could afford a house with a backyard in
There are still lots of trees around, however the home units are getting closer, as developers knock down houses with backyards. Even Roseville School is now being demolished to build multi-story buildings to take extra students. Dick Smith’s latest project has been Population Growth. Recently Ku-ring-gai’s new zoning plans have been approved. I asked him what he sees as the main issue. We seem to be obsessed with growth but as we’re living in a finite world we are going to have a real problem if we continue to try and grow all the time. We are a democratic country so we should be able to make a
decision that says this is the optimum size for Australia. Do you think a population risk study would be helpful? Yes, it would certainly provide a lot of insight however I think it’s going to be many years away. I believe that one day we are going to have a new, young leader; someone who is presently under 25. Someone who will show the leadership what politicians showed in the 1830s when they strove to abolish slavery. People are starting to say, “Oh we can actually do something about our huge population increase”. It’s not just something that is going to happen. The risk study will be expensive and I’m sure it will be done one day, but not in the near future When asked about the main factors contributing to the increase of high density housing in Ku-Ring-Gai, Dick Smith identifies a number of factors including: over consumption, capitalism, immigration and

changes to State planning. I believe that Capitalism is causing over consumption. Capitalism loves growth and wants to make money the easiest way possible and that’s with growth and consumerism. Many don’t admit the fact that growth can’t continue forever and we would do better to stabilise our population. We won’t make quite as much money but it will still do ok and capitalism will adapt. Our intake of immigrants is at a record high, with 280,000
people a year. I would like to see it at about 70,000 a year which is still very high. I love immigration but at 70,000 a year it would stabilise our population position and I think that’s a good idea. If this were the case we would need to address the shortage of skilled labour in Australia and yes, there is massive shortage which I can’t really believe. What I would do is first train some of the million people who are not working and also older people like me. I’m 65
years old. I have met 80 year old workers. We should keep working longer, that is the way. I’m totally opposed to the fact that a state government are taking over the zoning powers from Ku-Ring-Gai’s local community. I just can’t believe it could happen in Australia. When I was young, when I first bought my first block of land I thought this was now mine and no one could interfere with it. The problem is now when they re-zone and you don’t sell they build home units all around you. They destroy your value and they destroy your lifestyle. It’s completely un-Australian. I’m completely opposed to it. When asked about Solutions, Dick Smith reflects on his own childhood and shares his philosophy. What we should do, is try to keep as many backyards as possible. I grew up playing in the backyard and in the streets of Roseville. I think we should have free-range kids not battery kids. Battery kids live in high density home units, which we are building here, free range kids live in backyards. We pay a premium price for free range eggs, surely the chooks aren’t as important as our kids.

Jan Taylor’s
story
BY WENDY McCREADY FREELANCE WRITER Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) For thirty years Jan Taylor has suffered with the symptoms of ME/CFS. They first developed whilst recovering from a major operation that had required a blood transfusion, a year after the birth of her fourth child. She developed an infection following this - never understanding whether the infection was from the operation or the blood transfusion - and she has never recovered her health and vigour. For the first six years Jan did not know why she felt so exhausted. Doctors had no answers. It was only when her 12 year old son developed similar symptoms and was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that Jan realised this was what she had too. After thirty long years Jan knows how to manage the condition. She rarely goes out – “if I do anything I pay for it”. She lies down for a while every afternoon so that she has the energy to make dinner each night. She is exhausted and wishes she could sleep but suffers with insomnia. At one stage she was in a wheelchair because she struggles to be able to move
What are ME and CFS? The terms Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are both used to describe a severe illness with numerous symptoms. In the UK and other countries another term, Post-Viral Syndrome, is also used. ME has been classified as a neurological disorder by the World Health Organisation since 1969. What are the symptoms of ME/CFS? Most sufferers of ME/CFS report feeling exhausted all the time. They suffer absolutely overwhelming fatigue after any physical and/or mental activity. Other symptoms might include insomnia, muscle pain, migraine headache, symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, problems with memory and concentration, sensitivity to light, touch and sound, problems with standing and balance, problems with body temperature and weight, and flu-like symptoms that persist for at least six months. How is ME/CFS diagnosed? Symptoms are different for every sufferer and this makes diagnosis difficult. Until recently, diagnosis often occurred as the result of elimination tests for other conditions and diseases. The document used now to diagnose ME/CFS is the “Canadian Guidelines for Medical Practitioners”, which was written by a consortium of renowned researchers and medical practitioners from around the world and published in
2003. This document provides a comprehensive analysis of symptoms, guidelines and a checklist for medical practitioners. It is the accepted standard for diagnosis of ME/CFS in Australia and across the world. What causes ME/CFS? The causes of ME/CFS are much debated and the topic of ongoing research. It is likely that there is an interaction between genetic susceptibility, environmental stressors and the basic health of an individual at a particular time which makes them vulnerable to developing. Who gets ME/CFS? It affects men, women and children of all ages, cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. It affects women about twice as often and onset is most commonly in early 20s to mid-40s or in children aged 13 to 15. What is the prognosis? There is a wide variation in the duration of the illness, much as there is a wide variation in symptoms. Some people recover in less than two years whilst others remain ill for decades. As might be expected, the prognosis is worse for the most severe cases. Interestingly however, those with acute onset of symptoms often have a better prognosis than those with a gradual onset. ME/CFS is the peak body for ME/CFS in Australia. Its role is to communicate with medical and health professionals, federal politicians, service organisations and the media to improve awareness and knowledge of ME/CFS; support research into ME/ CFS and co-ordinate national ME/CFS awareness projects. Branches are in every state. Look at www.mecfs.org.au.

Naturopathic Winter Winter has begun and naturally at this time of year we want to eat more, move less and sleep for longer. How do we get through Winter, avoiding the Winter ‘spread’ and maintaining our health and a good diet? While exercise is essential to meet these needs, there is more to the equation than just keeping up our daily exercise. During Winter we tend to crave carbohydrate foods like mashed potato, hot chips, rich pastas, hot chocolate etc… These foods may help to warm our bones on a cold night, but don’t help in managing our weight or our health. One handy tip is to have soups and stews at the ready. The root vegies in abundance at the moment like leeks, swedes, turnips, parsnips, pumpkins, ginger, garlic, onion and the different coloured carrots all make delicious, nutrient packed soups. Adding whole grains like pearl barley, wholegrain rice, lentils, chickpeas, split peas etc as well

as chicken or ham off the bone, will thicken our soups into hearty stews that satisfy even the most insatiable customer; growing boys! Roasted vegetables and warm salads are an excellent addition during Winter. Roasted sweet potato with pine nuts makes a delicious warm salad with the tough winter lettuce varieties like rocket and radiccio. Experimenting with vegetable mash is another great way to get in more nutrition during winter. Roasted orange and purple carrot mash is delicious, so is cauliflower and broccoli mash, green pea and adzuki bean mash (you might need a blender for that one!) and garlic, onion and sweet potato mash. Make friends with all the warming spices during winter, as they will also help your digestion and aid metabolism. Some Winter classics include curry powder, paprika, garam masala, the red, green or yellow curry pastes, pepper, nutmeg, cardamom, cayenne, ginger, chilli, garlic….. These spices are also fantastic for those of us who suffer from cold hands and feet during
Winter. Adding a pinch of these spices to each meal will help to improve circulation to the extremities and warm up those cold fingers. Pepper is a spice that is also being used therapeutically in herbal medicine to manage pain and inflammation, so, for those who suffer the most with their arthritis in winter, pepper is a great condiment to add to most meals. Cocoa is another beautiful Winter addition. Raw cacao (cold extracted cocoa) is very high in antioxidants and is naturally very sweet tasting. It makes a delicious hot chocolate without all the added sugars and flavouring found in packaged hot chocolates. Warm your milk with 2 heaped teaspoons of raw cacao powder and you’ll have your chocolate cravings satisfied as well as a great energy boost for the long days of winter. These are just a few handy ideas to help you get through Winter in great health. Have fun experimenting with all the Winter produce and spices you discover!

Pet-Friendly More than a third of Australian adults would sooner dump their partner than their pet, according to recent research undertaken by the RSPCA. RSPCA veterinarian Simone Maher said the “astounding” research results revealed that pets can indeed be our best friends. “Some 86.8 per cent of survey respondents said they would choose their pet over their friends or flatmate,” Dr Maher said. Only one third said their partner understood them better than their pet did. “In fact, almost a quarter of respondents wished their partner was like their pet,” she said. Such sobering statistics graphically illustrate the importance of animals in society. So, what happens when people are pressured by advancing age or lifestyle circumstances to down-size from a family home to something smaller? Real estate agent Heidi Healy understands more than most the difficulties buyers face. “I see it time and time again … buyers frustrated by the lack of choice available in pet-friendly strata properties,” Heidi said. “It’s especially so on the upper North Shore where so many strata complexes are positioned on main roads. Many
people don’t feel comfortable about keeping a pet near a busy road,” she said. It’s why a recently-completed
complex of 17 garden homes and villas in North Turramurra has been met with such enthusiasm. Positioned in a leafy street adjoining North Turramurra Golf Course, Curragul Greens offers pet-friendly living within a short walk of shops, cafes and transport links. Five of the 17 properties have been snapped up in the short time they have been on the market. “Considering they weren’t even finished when we first started marketing them, it’s an amazing result,” Heidi said. She said the stylish properties would appeal to all age groups - young families, executives and retirees. “They offer quality appointments and a peaceful setting at an affordable price, and you can’t really beat that in terms of appeal,” she said. The three to four-bedroom properties are priced from $950,000 and have a spacious open-plan living/dining area flowing out to a private garden. The homes also feature a luxury master suite, 2 ½ bathrooms and double lock-up garage. Contact Heidi Healy, of Chadwick First National, on 0421 098 344.

Liz Ellis inspired all at Ku-ring-gai Business Forum Dinner
Acclaimed Former Australian netball player, Liz Ellis (left), spoke recently at a Ku-ring-gai Business Forum dinner sponsored by the Turramurra Community Bank®. Liz was a natural and engaging speaker who spoke about her belief in the importance of goal setting, leadership, teamwork and taking risks… It all started when Liz was eight years old. An old friend of her mother rang her Mum and asked if she could play netball. Her Mum’s response was, ‘Liz is too un-coordinated and a bit of a loner. She isn’t really a team player so I don’t think Liz should play’. A week later the friend rang again and told Liz’s mum that she really feels Liz should play as she had heard that kids that didn’t play team sports ended up as juvenile delinquents. Her Mum relented and let her play. Liz said she loved playing netball from the first time she stepped onto the court. Eighteen years later Liz has played in two Gold Medal winning Commonwealth Games teams, won two World Championships and surpassed the record for most test matches played for Australia. Liz is known as one of Australia’s most successful netball players as well as being captain of the Australian team and the Sydney Swifts.
Success didn’t just fall in her lap. In 2002 she made an investment in an ice-cream shop in Manly. She thought because of her experience with her netball training camps (a low-overhead small business) that she could turn her hand to any small business. The icecream shop was however a small retail business and a completely different animal. She realised it was not for her, so she fairly quickly got out of it. In the Test against the Silver Ferns played in Auckland on October 29 2006, Ellis suffered a serious knee injury doing a move that she’d probably done 100,000 times before. She was required to have surgery and rehabilitation lasting several months. This was shattering for Liz as she was due to play in the Commonwealth Games, Melbourne, in six months time. Her goals for those six months went out the window. Liz remarkably recovered well. She was thirty-three years old and determined to get back on court and to play at an elite level. Beating the Kiwis in the World Championships on their home ground in November 2007 was a great last game to play. She believes having a whole team working with her to get her back on the court, is the reason she pulled through. She kept her retirement a secret from her team. Her family and Catherine Cox (a close friend) and a couple of officials within Netball Australia knew as she felt necessary in order for them to plan ahead. Even her coach didn’t know that the World Championship match was going
to be her last. She wanted the team to remain completely focused and she didn’t want her retirement to be a distraction from the game. Liz was named the Most Valuable player of the series and the Grand Final. In 2009 Liz Ellis became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to netball and the encouragement of women in sport and to the community through her support for a range of charitable organisations. Liz has now established “Liz Ellis Goals 4 Girls”. This is a foundation that offers girls an education and the opportunity to pursue their goalsin which, due to their family situation, wouldn’t otherwise be possible. Ashley with her certificate Liz Ellis is also a highly sought after speaker and broadcaster. Jobs include: ONE HD Netball Commentator and Host and Thursday Night Live. “We were thrilled to be able to provide the opportunity for the Ku-ring-gai Business Community (and any aspiring netballers) to learn and be inspired by one of Australian netball’s greatest players” commented Turramurra Community Bank’s Branch Manager, Denice Kelly. The Ku-ring-gai Business Forum is an initiative of the Turramurra Community Bank® and gives local business people an opportunity to engage in business networking in a relaxed, social environment. If you are interested in attending the next Ku-ring-gai Business Forum dinner, please register at the Turramurra Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank, 1273 Pacific Highway, Turramurra or phone 9488 9496.

What are your short term career plans? Have you considered any off season playing contracts? As with any sport or profession, the more you practice, the luckier you get. So every opportunity that I find – or can even make – I will spend trying to make myself luckier.
Q
The Waratahs have been close to the super 14 title but can’t quite get there, considering the new format next year what do you think is the missing key to winning the competition?
Variations in format can obviously impact a team’s longer term performance, but really – it comes down to how you perform on the day. It’s not only about attitude, it’s also about constantly honing your individual – but more particularly your team – skills to deliver an optimum performance, every time. Now that’s a really big ask, but I know that BOBBIN the Waratahs can do it.
HEAD GARAGEHow do you think the Melbourne Rebels will FUEL go next year - do you consider them a good team with opportunities for young players? So having a city SUMMER with the huge talent and resources of Melbourne OFFERS entering the tournament is fantastic! It not only

creates additional opportunities for the current players, but will also inspire younger players in Victoria to step up to playing professionally.

Our chickens are NOT fed hormones in any way. Tests by the Commonwealth Government confirm this on a regular basis. Our chickens are grain fed. A balanced diet consisting of vitamins, minerals, soyabean meal and a variety of grains including wheat, barley, sorghum and oats form the entire content of the chicken’s feed. Our chickens are housed in large open sheds and are not kept in cages. These sheds protect the birds from the elements in the same way a chicken house would be provided by any farmer.
