by Ryann Lavenia | CRNA, ARNP livinglocalfl.com | JANUARY 2018

I don’t know how you feel, but for me the years seem to be flying by. I suppose that is part of growing up!

Moving forward in 2018, we will be continuing our initiative, For a Greater Cause, spotlighting local non-profits that are making a difference in our community. This month’s feature is Eva’s Closet, helping a broad spectrum of Southwest Floridians obtain necessities for every day living.

The new year is a time of reflection, along with hope for what is to come. Looking back at livinglocal , we’ve made many new partnerships and friends while holding steadfast to those who’ve been part of the family for many years. I am beyond grateful for every business who has supported us along the way.

livinglocal experienced many changes and growth in 2017, and we look forward to the continued evolution and expansion of our initiatives. Our goal remains the same; to further connect you with local reputable businesses, their owners and employees, all while doing so on a personal level.

Quigley Eye Specialists is one of those businesses. Dr. Thomas Quigley has been our partner for more than seven years and I’ve been so excited to share his story since the day we interviewed him. Thank you, Dr. Quigley, for your faithful partnership and for allowing us to tell your personal story. Many of you will relate to his struggles and appreciate the success that came from his perseverance. It certainly inspired me – I know you will feel the same.

Cheers to 2018 and to living local in the coming year!

TM

It’s important for me to know who I’m doing business with. I have sincerely enjoyed getting to know more about our advertising partners over the last year, as well as having the opportunity to share their stories with our community. I hope you have enjoyed it too.

From Humble Beginnings to the # Cataract Practice in SWFL

1

How Dr. Thomas A. Quigley’s humble past and patient-first philosophy helped him grow Quigley Eye Specialists into a leading ophthalmology practice. By Gina Birch

W

hen Dr. Thomas Quigley was a young boy in Mississippi, there was a time when doctors didn’t think he would make it past the seventh grade. They were wrong. Today, he is one of the leading cataract surgeons in the country, celebrating 30 years in Southwest Florida. The son of a general medical practitioner in a small town in Mississippi, Dr. Quigley knew he wanted to practice medicine, but it wasn’t until his second year of medical school that his specialty, quite literally, came into focus. His sister Kathy had developed uveitis, an autoimmune disease that attacks the tissues of the eye. The disease had progressed to the point that one eye had to be removed. She eventually lost all sight. livinglocalfl.com | JANUARY 2018

Dr. Quigley says, “I remember her cr y ing t hrough t he night due to constant pain.” He continues, “She raised three kids by herself, she’s strong and positive. My sister is an inspiration to me. She’s the reason I do what I do today.” When the young doctor graduated from medical school, he knew he w an te d to s t ay in t he sou t h b u t wasn’t sure where. While visiting a friend in Naples, he remembers, “It was a beautiful area. (Chuckling) And I noticed it was a popular place to retire.” Wanting to specialize in eye care for an aging population, Dr. Quigley did some research and discovered the area was vastly underserved. The average wait to see an ophthalmologist was three months.

Medical Team

Setting up practice in Fort Myers, he remembers the first day, “We had a staff of two and zero patients.” He pounded the pavement, speaking at senior centers where he often found a tough audience. Laughing about one experience he says, “There were seven people, and I had my little slide show about to give a presentation and this lady says, ‘Move out of the way! Wheel of Fortune is on.’” Fast-forward thirty years, and today, Quigley Eye Specialists is one of the largest ophthalmology practices in the area. They have eight offices and perform more cataract surgery than any other practice in Southwest Florida. As a leading ophthalmology practice in the country, Quigley Eye Specialists focuses on much more than cataracts. Today, they have specialists that treat

corneal conditions, glaucoma, retinal issues and droopy eyelids with a procedure called bladeless eyelid surgery. The growth didn’t happen by accident. It was through commitment to providing excellent patient care and having the right business culture, according to Dr. Quigley. He explains, “We have impor tant core values. We focus on technical expertise, service to community and treating patients like guests in our home.” Patient s who are facing catarac t s u r g e r y a re o f te n a f r a i d o f t h e p ro c e d u re a n d /o r i t ’s p o te n t i a l complications. However, because of Dr. Q uigley ’s experience and exper tise, the probabilit y of something going wrong is a mere .02%, which is significantly lower than the national average. livinglocalfl.com | JANUARY 2018

toddler had a life-threatening virus. His father performed CPR, but he was without oxygen for about five minutes. Hospitalized for months, Dr. Quigley’s life would forever be changed. Fighting back emotions, Dr. Quigley recalls, “I became dyslexic because of the ordeal.” Dyslexia is a condition in which a person has difficulty in reading or interpreting words. “I ended up failing the third grade because I had a hard time reading.” He went to psychologists and doctors who said he likely wouldn’t finish seventh grade. The work wasn’t easy, but thanks to his mother’s tutoring and his ability to memorize words, Dr. Quigley graduated high school. He didn’t just do well in college, he excelled, graduating summa cum laude from Ole Miss and second in his class from medical school at LSU.

The personable doctor has never forgotten his struggles and humble beginnings. According to Dr. Quigley and those who know him well, those challenges have helped him become who he is today, which is one of the nations leading cataract surgeons and founder of Quigley Eye Specialists, the premier eye specialist group in Southwest Florida. Dr. Quigley says, “What makes me the happiest is focusing on the needs of people; it came from my dad’s philosophy. From day one, my dad taught us that we are here to serve the community.” That he does.

@moreoptionslessrisk

@gardnerortho239

H IP REPL ACEM ENTS By Gina Birch The process of getting to the hip joint through the anterior approach can sometimes be quite difficult; it requires retracting or pulling on the muscles until the hip joint is well visualized. An artery that courses through the front of the joint needs to be ligated before the joint capsule is opened. The joint is then dislocated and the ball is cut from the thigh bone. Getting a stem into the thigh bone deep in the wound at an awkward angle can cause the thighbone to break. If a break occurs, the surgeon has to make yet another incision to repair it.

Dr. Ameglio is an athlete; he competes in triathlons like the half Ironman, and runs extreme distances in Ultra Marathons. He understands his patients’ desires to live full and active lives, not just in the younger years but also as they age. It’s a philosophy he brings to the office every day as he seeks to relieve pain, treat injuries and give Southwest Floridians a better quality of life.

About the supercapsular or mini posterior surgical approach, Dr. Ameglio says, “We are excited by this innovation because its one of those things that you stop and think ‘why didn’t we think of this?’. It just makes sense as far as injuries to the soft tissue. By moving the incision a little further up and repositioning the patient, it makes all the difference in recovery, and patients say it feels more natural.”

Friends look forward to seeing Natalie Conner, not only because of her infectious laugh and bubbly personality but also to see what eye glasses she’s wearing.

The retired radio station general manager won’t confess to the actual number in her possession, but admits, “I change glasses as I change my outfits.” A substantial part of her enviable collection comes from I-Topian Optical. Moving to Southwest Florida from Philadelphia three years ago, Conner says, “I was looking for a fabulous eye glass place because I wear them all the time. I heard about I-Topian and fell in love instantly because of the styles they carry, the quality of the merchandise and the service.” I-Topian carries top name brands and frames from designers with almost cult like followings. Conner especially likes the trunk shows hosted by the boutique saying, “For me glasses are not only necessary to see but also as a fashion accessory.”

itopian.com • Care Credit accepted

• Use your FSA & HSA money • Authorized Out of Network Provider for most insurances

The optical boutique not only sells new frames, but can also take your vintage ones and update the lens to your current prescription using the highest quality and most up to date technology. I-Topian can custom make frames for hard to fit clients, and important to Conner, “They will not sell you something that doesn’t serve you well.” When friends and strangers ask her about her ‘eye catching’ glasses, she points them to I-Topian, confidently saying, “You’re going to get quality, the best service, and something very stylish that will enhance your overall appearance; not only how you look but how you see.”

Treating Venous reflux disease with What is VenaSeal™?

VenaSeal™ is the latest minimally invasive procedure proven to safely and effectively treat venous reflux disease. At Vein Specialists, we are dedicated to improving our patients’ health. VenaSeal™ was approved by the FDA late in 2015 and is the only procedure that uses medical adhesive to close a diseased leg vein from the inside. Dr. Magnant and Dr. Nero are the only physicians in Southwest Florida currently offering VenaSeal™, which is available in our Fort Myers and Bonita Springs locations. What is venous insufficiency? Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in the veins of the legs no longer function properly. Blood refluxes or flows backward and pools in the lower legs. This pooling of blood can result in varicose veins, leg swelling, skin discoloration or ulceration as well as a host of symptoms including heaviness, achiness and fatigue in the legs which worsen as the day progresses. Other symptoms might include night time leg cramps, restless legs or frequent night time urination.

What should you do if you have these symptoms? We encourage you to come to Vein Specialists. You will be seen by one of our Board Certified Surgeons or our highly skilled Advanced Nurse Practitioners to review your health history, perform a thorough vascular physical examination and order appropriate diagnostic testing, which often includes a comprehensive ultrasound by one of our Registered Vascular Technologists. Upon review of the diagnostic ultrasound results, an individualized treatment plan will be established. If this treatment includes closure of diseased veins, several options are offered at Vein Specialists including thermal ablation with Radiofrequency or LASER, as well as VenaSeal™. What are the advantages to VenaSeal™ over traditional thermal ablation? VenaSeal™ allows us to treat the entire length of the vein, from the ankle to the groin. With traditional thermal ablation, sealing of the vein is typically limited to the level of the middle calf. VenaSeal™ is better tolerated in some patients as it only requires one needle stick to numb the single needle entry point

whereas, with thermal ablation, several needle sticks are necessary. VenaSeal™ procedures are performed in our state of the art outpatient surgical suites under sterile conditions with local anesthesia. As 2017 draws to a close, we hope that when considering your vein disease and the various treatment options (all of which Vein Specialists offer), you carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages. Since Vein Specialists focuses 100% on the treatment of vein disease, we offer the full range of vein treatment options and we are proud to be the only Certified VenaSeal™ Provider in Lee & Collier Counties.

We are excited to announce medical adhesive vein closure, VenaSeal™ will be covered by insurance starting in 2018! Contact our team of providers at Vein Specialists to get your legs feeling and looking better today!

Chef Robert Charest’s Kitchen Crepe Crème Brulee

From

A Delectably Delecate Dessert

Crème Brulee

Preheat oven to 225 degrees F. Mix egg yolks together, then add sugar, heavy cream and vanilla. Whisk over medium heat until hot, then pour into a half inch sheet tray. Place the tray in a water bath and bake in the oven for 45 minutes or until everything is set. Let cool in refrigerator for at least one hour.

Crepes

Whisk eggs together. Stir in the milk, butter, sugar, and salt. Then mix in the flour. Remember to remove all lumps. This should have the consistency of creamy soup. When blended, heat up your crepe pan and spray with butter. Depending on how big you want your crepes to be, you can either use a 1oz or 2oz ladle to scoop out the mixture. Make sure to spread the mixture nice and thin in a circular pattern. Your crepes are ready when they are lightly brown and slightly crispy. Once the creme brûlée has cooled down, cut into squares. Place your crepe cooked side up and add creme rule square, then wrap and turn over. Use spray butter to coat the top of the wrapped crepe and sprinkle 3 packets of raw sugar over the top. Use a torch to caramelize the top, turning it golden brown. Then plate and serve!

BUYING SOUTHWEST Treasures New England Collector

W

hen you gather with family and talk about old times, you might also discuss grandma’s antiques, wondering what kind of value they hold besides sentimental.

That’s where Tony Costantino comes in, a well-respected antique collector/dealer in Southwest Florida. His antique career began in Vermont. In 1971 he and wife Bonnie moved there to start a ski business, however, it didn’t snow that year. Forced to sell almost everything they owned, they put an ad in the paper for two wood stoves in the ski lodge. The oil embargo had kicked in and people were looking for cheap heating alternatives. Costantino says, “We sold over 3000 antique wood stoves.” That began their foray into the antiques business. While they live part time in Naples, their expansive store is in the quaint town of Clarendon Springs, Vermont, in a former hotel that dates back to the 1830’s. While in Southwest Florida, they buy things residents are ready to part with. Others call on the Costantino’s when they want to get a

By Gina Birch second opinion on a price already quoted to them. He says, “Everyone likes to get top dollar.” However, today’s top dollar is significantly different than when he first got in the business. The reason, he says, “Older people had fun collecting things but younger people don’t seem to have the same interest.” Items that are still holding their value, according to Costantino, include Civil War items, jewelry, paintings, and oriental rugs. If you are looking for something in particular, the couple may be able to help you find it, however, Costantino advises, “You gotta buy today because you really love it, not for an investment.” The Antiques business may not be as lucrat ive as it was when Cos tant ino began, but he says he still likes hearing p e o p l e’s s t o r i e s a n d , “ w h e n I s e e someone get excited. I know they really love this thing and it makes me happy. I’ve meet so many people who are really a pleasure to do business with, especially in Naples.”

If

you haven’t been to Wyld’s Café, chances are you’ve whizzed by it dozens of times on Bonita Beach Road. Located in a small strip center with no frontage, the parking and entrance are in the back. Chef/owner Robert Charest signed a deal to take over the space on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th, 2004. In a whirlwind six weeks, he opened the doors.

livinglocalfl.com | JANUARY 2018

More Than A Meal... A Wyld Culinary Experience! Growing up in Massachusetts, Charest started working in the restaurant industry when he was just eleven years old and went to culinary school at Johnson and Wales. Attending classes during the day, at night he worked in a restaurant on Block Island, Rhode Island. The owners also had a restaurant in Naples. So in 1990, in his 20’s, Charest became a working snowbird. After a few seasons of summers on Block Island and winters in Naples, he had an epiphany, saying, “I’ve always worked for family owned businesses, 14 to 15 hour days for someone else, not reaping the rewards.” So he founded Wyld’s, serving modern American cuisine with a French twist. Today, he says, “I’ve changed with the times offering some gluten free items, vegetarian dishes and quinoa. You have the option to be healthy.” If you want to pass on that option, try the shallot risotto, butternut squash and sage risotto, wild mushroom risotto, or the ever-popular shrimp and lobster risotto ($33). This one comes with three jumbo shrimp and two ounces of main lobster over a decadent, creamy risotto that has spinach, fresh tomatoes and sits on top of lobster sauce. The sauces are made in house, the demi glace included. It is savory and delicious with Wyld’s signature, Tenderloin Saga. Served in seven and ten ounce

portions ($34/$42), the thick, tender steak is topped with Saga blue cheese that gracefully melts into the demi glace. The mound of crisp pommes frites on top are cut and then cooked fresh to order. Charest laughs, “I try to eat at least one a week.” The produce is local, along with most of the fish. However, there is Walleye for his Midwest fans. Otherwise, try the Cashew Encrusted Grouper ($34). Local black grouper is coated with cashews and panko, sautéed, and finished in the oven. It has a delicate and delicious soy beurre blanc sauce. Charest is a beer drinker and has many unique offerings. As for the wine, the list covers the globe with 150 bottle selections and twenty by the glass. The walls are filled with paintings from local artists. The lights are perfectly placed to illuminate each table and the tables are far enough apart to have private conversations. With seating for about 80, reservations are a necessity in season and on weekends. Charest takes great pride in scheduling so that your time slot is honored, no waiting half an hour at the bar. With the welcoming ambiance, stellar service and superb cuisine, dining at Wyld’s Café is not just a meal, it is an experience. For reservations, visit WyldsCafe.com or call 239-947-0408.

eliev i ng R & Anxiety Stress with

Med ical Marijuana

By Gina Birch

S

ome 40-million adults in the United States suffer from anxiety. Only a small percentage ever seek treatment and of those who do, most turn to pharmaceuticals, which have a wide range of less than desirable side effects. Dr. Sonn, founder of Iona Health and Wellness, has seen great success when prescribing medical marijuana for patients with anxiety problems and disorders. About cannabis, he says, “What’s cool about this is it’s helping a system we already have in our body…it’s one of the only drugs in the world that mimics our neurochemical receptors. Medical marijuana works the same whether it’s produced by our body or not.”

When prescribing cannabis to patients, Dr. Sonn says, “I like to start oral, with oils and tinctures. Everyone’s dosing is different so I need to figure out your ratio.” Dr. Sonn grew up in Fort Myers and is an integrative physician who treats the whole person, not just the disease. The doctor says, “I like to teach people how to change their lives for the better.” He has extensive medical experience, and vast knowledge behind the science of medical marijuana, a treatment that he says, “It’s not recreational…I call it medicine.”

Coming from a plant, it’s a natural drug that calms hyperactive states such as anxiety along with a laundry list of other ailments. Cannabis has also proven to be a successful treatment for stress relief. Dr. Sonn explains why this is important, saying, “Stress is inversely propor tionate to disease. As your stress level goes up, your immune system goes down and the more likely you are to become sick.”

Dr. Sonn may be reached at

We come to you

Theresa Clements | Interior Designer

Have you ever

watched a home improvement show on television and wished someone could help you freshen up your space, or fix the things that just don’t work? That’s exactly what Theresa Clements does at Fast & Frugal. Clements has been in the interior design business for more than 25 years, originally as an owner of Galloway’s, Clements and Associates in Royal Palm Square. There, she had what she calls “a dream team” of architects, designers, builders and contractors, all ready to work on major projects. Fast & Frugal is a spinoff of sorts, targeting the everyday homeowner who wants to make a home update but needs the help of an expert. She says, “I’m trying to reach people who wouldn’t think of a calling a designer.” If a home consultation is all you have the budget for, she’ll come in and decide on a game plan, giving you a road map of where to go and how to achieve exactly what you want.

If you need more direct assistance, the designer says, “Get on your running shoes, were gonna work.” She’ll take you to furniture, consignment and home improvement stores to find the perfect pieces, paint colors and more, all within your budget. About her job, Clement says, “It’s exciting for me to open new doors to clients and give them a way to solve what they thought was a huge problem.” She continues, “Once you see their vision, the fun thing is giving them the best version of that vision.”

Theresa’s Tip of the Month The color white always makes a space look larger, but perhaps a little antiseptic. Try a shade of white with some warmth and dimension that allows easy changes with new accents like rugs or pillows. When choosing strong accent pieces, make sure they thread throughout the house. This will unite and energize the spaces. @FastAndFrugal

W

ith the holiday season behind us, it can be easy to forget about the continued need of those less fortunate in our community. If you’ve made it your New Year’s resolution to give back this year, put Eva’s Closet on your radar. Founded by Jessica Goodall in February 2016, it has become a charity with long arms that embrace a diverse community, as as well as it’s wide spectrum of needs. Growing up in Worcester county, Massachusetts, Goodall spent a lot of time with her great aunt, Eva Engel, who was a founder of Abby’s House: a shelter for abused women and children. Goodall remembers, “She was amazing. That was what she was meant to do, helping people in need. She was my inspiration and I knew from a young age that I was suppose to do the same thing.” Af ter college graduation, Goodall relocated to Southwest Florida to be closer to family. Over the next eleven years, her job in the child welfare system in Naples opened her eyes to the needs in the area, and there were many. She

remembers, “My last semester of grad school at FGCU, I had the idea to begin Eva’s Closet and my family supported me fully in doing so.” She has since taken over half of the Jim Goodall Equipment warehouse off Alico Road, filling it with new and gently used donations to help people in need; from foster children and those in transitional housing, to abused women and the homeless, just to name a few. Goodall’s long-term goal is to raise enough money to buy her parents’ warehouse; she definitely needs the space! The donations she receives, organized in rows and stacks, include well-maintained and new clothing, paper and hygiene products, home goods and a small food pantry.

“For a Greater Cause” is a monthly initiative of Living Local, spotlighting a local non-profit that is making a difference in our community. Living Local also makes a monetar y donation to the non-profit on the behalf of its advertising partners.

The socially minded businesswoman says, “We aid hundreds of people every month. We are hoping to increase community awareness so that we may continually gain support in our efforts to aid local children and families in need.” Jessica’s Great Aunt Eva died before seeing her niece’s grand accomplishment, but her legacy lives on and it’s not just because her name is on the building. Her spirit of service is alive and well in Goodall who in turn passes it on to others, every single day.

Clients are served by appointment, but donations are accepted anytime at the warehouse. After the holidays, Goodall’s needs are just as great, especially for items such as: • Blankets and sheets • Pots, pans & kitchen utensils • Non-perishable food • Well-maintained and new children’s clothing and shoes Monetary donations are also deeply appreciated.
