According to the American Dental Association, more than one in five people surveyed had not visited the dentist in the last few years. The primary reasons why were fear and cost. X-rays of your teeth are also made during an initial visit. Dr. Farag explains, “At our office, these are taken digitally and are visible to you immediately on a large computer screen.” Besides the advantage of being able to see the results right away, digital X-rays, as opposed to traditional processed ones, expose patients to minimal radiation. Even so, Advanced Dentistry offers patients a lead shield to wear during the X-rays. Oral cancer screening is another part of the initial clinical exam. “At Advanced Dentistry, we now have the velscope, a tool that uses fluorescence to detect any subtle changes in your tissue that could indicate any pathology,” says the dentist. Determining a patient’s gum health is vitally important and is checked not only during an initial visit, but also in subsequent regular exams. It is estimated that 47.2% of adults over age 30 suffered from untreated periodontal disease between 2009-2010. Gums are evaluated in two ways; by the bone levels visible on X-rays and by measuring the depths between the tooth and gum with a small probe. In healthy gingival tissue, the depths are less than 3 millimeters, no bone loss exists, the gums are pink in color, and there is no bleeding. Gum disease is relatively easy to treat if caught early.
It is also important to determine if a patient has any cavities or tooth fractures that might require attention. D r. Pelvic Pain IS IT IN YOUR HEAD OR IN
C
hronic pelvic pain is a common problem in women, but because of its private nature, many patients suffering from it don’t talk about it openly. Women with this kind of pain typically seek help from their OB/GYN specialists, as well as a range of other specialists, and sometimes they are unable to uncover the root of the problem. According to Dr. Joseph Magnant, founder of Vein Specialists, says women, as well as men with unexplainable pelvic pain could be suffering from a venous condition called Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS). PCS is a condition characterized by the following signs or symptoms: large varicose veins from the groin, vulva, or gluteal fold; leg swelling, ulcers or stasis dermatitis; pain in the pelvis and abdomen with squatting or crouching; painful intercourse; painful menstruation; pain in buttocks, posterior thigh, or knee with prolonged sitting or standing. These pelvic varicose veins may wrap around the ovaries, uterus, vagina, bladder, and even the bowel. Other signs or symptoms may include buttock pain, varicose veins in the vulva or buttock fold area, and achiness in the posterior thigh down to the knee, typically worse around menstruation and after intercourse.
That was the case with Lindsay. Her problems began during her second pregnancy; she was only 28-years old. The young mom says, “I started noticing a lot of leg pain and swelling; my feet were huge.” In addition, “The back of my thigh was throbbing, aching with pain. I developed a varicose vein in the back of my leg and could pinpoint that spot as the source for a lot of my pain.” She had trouble staying on her feet during the day and suf fered from restless leg syndrome at night. Her doctors attributed the pain to her pregnancy and advised wearing compression stockings. That’s not an easy task for a pregnant woman in Southwest Florida who needs compression up high, around the groin. After she delivered her baby, the pain didn’t go away. “It became unbearable after my fourth pregnancy,” says Lindsay, “I was 32 and too young to be feeling like I was. I couldn’t be on my feet all day, yet I had toddlers to run after. The pain was drastically impacting my life.” That’s when she turned to Vein Specialists and Dr. Magnant for help. of her pain,” says Dr. Magnant. She and her husband were able to experience intimacy without pelvic pain once again, within a week of her procedure. Lindsay felt relief from her venous pain within a week after her treatment as well. She says, “I feel young again, not like a 30 year-old in an 80 year-old body.” “Women rarely talk openly about their pelvic congestion symptoms. There are more patients with treatable causes of chronic pelvic pain than we may realize and rather than labeling them as having psychogenic pelvic pain, I think investigating for a treatable cause such as iliac vein compression is the best course of action,” says Dr. Magnant. Hip Replacement D ean Heflin had his right hip replaced 24-years ago; he was 66 years old at the time. He was in the hospital for five days and then required extensive physical rehabilitation and was unable to drive for six months. This July, at the age of 90, he had his left hip replaced by Dr. Peter Ameglio, renowned for his use of an advanced technique known as SuperPATH®. Heflin was out of bed and dressed the morning following his operation, telling Dr. Ameglio he was ready to go home. “Things have come a long way since my first surgery,” he says in awe. The retiree had been in pain for quite some time saying, “My hip was just wearing out. I couldn’t walk straight, and my wife (of 63 years) would say ‘quit hobbling’. But I couldn’t because it hurt.” Knowing what his first surgery was like, Heflin put off another trip to the operating room, until he researched the SuperPATH approach and met Dr. Ameglio. There is longevity in Mr. Heflin’s family. His mother lived to be over 100 and his 93-year-old sister walks a quarter of a mile every day, neither had hip problems. Mr. Heflin believes his hip arthritis comes from playing football. “My thought process was well even though
I’m 90, I better get this done while I’m physically and mentally able to. I’m not sure if in a couple of years, I’ll have the same opportunity,” says Heflin. Although SuperPATH was originally introduced in 2003, it’s not a widely used technique. Dr. Ameglio is the first and most experienced surgeon in Southwest Florida performing SuperPATH. Its key lies in not dislocating the hip joint during surgery. With all other hip replacements, a dislocation of the hip is required. This results in injury to the joint capsule and small muscle attachments of the hip. Dr. Ameglio explains, “Since you don’t have to dislocate the hip joint in the SuperPATH approach, it’s much less traumatic. It takes a lot of force to dislocate a human hip; requiring the entire leg to be rotated until it comes out of joint. Therefore, although the SuperPATH approach isn’t easier for the surgeon, it is easier on the patient and the recovery time is shortened significantly.” Following surgery with a hip dislocation approach, the patient is instructed on hip precautions and certain positions that they should not place their leg. Even getting in and out of a car for the first two months following surgery is considered a risky move for fear of hip dislocation.

However, the SuperPATH approach does not carr y these restrictions because the joint is never dislocated in the first place. Because SuperPATH is so much easier on the body, Dr. Ameglio is now able to perform hip replacement surgery as an outpatient procedure on select patients. He says, “This is great for patients who meet the qualifications. I call them the next day to see how they are doing. I can hear it in their voices how relaxed they are. It feels like a luxury to recover in the comfort of your own home. We also send a nurse and physical therapist to help in the recovery.” Heflin says, “It took entirely too long to recover from my first hip surgery, but with SuperPATH I went in the hospital at 7am on a Monday and I was discharged the next day. I had no real discomfort.” The small amount of discomfort he did experience was easily relieved with Tylenol and aspirin. Mr. Heflin used a walker for about a week following surgery, a cane for the next week. “Then I was back to walking on my own and driving just 15 days after my surgery,” says Heflin. He recommends SuperPATH to friends who are in pain but
are putting off hip surgery for fear of a long and painful recovery process. Although his proficient use of surgical techniques, such as SuperPATH and gentle bedside manner sets Dr. Ameglio apart, so does his new solo orthopedic practice. Open since July, patients are truly appreciating the intimate feel and personal touches of the office. “I love caring and connecting with others. We are all on this life’s journey together and I feel blessed to be able to serve others in this way.”

I don’t want to see these kids standing in food lines when they are their parents age,” says Beverly Pierret about the music program at Café of Life in Bonita Springs. A longtime volunteer at the café Pierret, founded the music program two years ago and says it’s changing the lives of the under privileged children who are involved in it. “Music is good for the heart and soul and well--for everything,” says Pierret. She began the program with one piano teacher and three students. Today there six instructors, 18 students, guitar has been added to the offerings, and there is a waiting list. There are also requests to add more instruments along with vocals and dance. The Café of Life was founded 20 years ago by a couple who wanted to offer homeless in the area, many of whom were veterans, a cup of coffee and support. The organization has bounced between several locations while growing and changing with the community.

In 2012 the Bonita Springs Women’s Club donated their building on Childers Street to the Café, giving the organization space for offices, storage, and events, including the music classes. Lessons are held three days a week as Public Relations and Transportation Director Nina Hart explains, “We buy keyboards, or they are donated, and give them to the children so they can practice at home.” The students sign a waiver that allows them to keep the instruments as long as they continue to take lessons. Hart says the program also benefits parents. “It holds them accountable. If they want a better future for their child, they must bring them here and participate too. Parents want more for their kids, but they don’t always know how to go about it. They see the value in this, and we see their joy and pride when watching their kids preform at our recitals.” Iris is leading the pack when it comes to the program’s success stories. Pierret remembers, “Her mother asked us if we could help. She was sitting on the couch

crying one afternoon because she had no talent. They were planning a talent show at school.” Iris had all kinds of talent bubbling underneath the surface, just waiting for someone to coax it out. At nine years old she began piano lessons and one year later was given a coveted scholarship to Learning from Elementary to Advance Piano or LEAP, a program by the Music Foundation of Greater Naples designed to help students from low-income families with private piano lessons. The Café of Life is privately funded and multi-faceted. Every weekday hot meals are prepared by different community groups and served under a gazebo at Leitner Park. The café actually built Leitner with help from the City of Bonita Springs. It also includes a small kitchen, playground, and soccer field. There is a food pantry and tables of donated clothing and goods; special attention is given to mothers and children on Tuesday. Last year, with the help of some 200 volunteers, 18,000 meals were served.

For those who can’t make it to the park, volunteers go into local migrant communities, delivering bags of grocery basics. There is also a transportation arm that helps get the underprivileged, the elderly, and veterans to the park for meals, to physicians’ offices, and other important appointments. These services are the tangible part of what the organization offers. What can’t be quantified, is the personal touch found here; the feeling of comfort and safety, the friendships that have been formed, and the kindness extended to those experiencing a wide range of need. And music plays a vital role. “Music is giving these students in our neighborhood confidence and it’s helping them in school too,” says Pierret. Hart adds, “I’ve seen a light develop in the eyes of these children. They have a different perspective now. They have the opportunity to dream bigger than the neighborhoods they are from.”
