ou can sure tell that season is here, not only by the shift in the weather but also the growing traffic! It’s an exciting time of the year with so many events, visitors and snowbirds. Although it can be frustrating on the roadways, I greatly appreciate the snowbirds for investing in our community and contributing to our local economy. How are your New Year’s Resolutions coming along? If you’ve resolved to improve your health or home, you’ll be sure to find just the right people in this month’s issue, as well as some terrific dining options. I’m still on track with my resolution; to live more local than ever. It’s so easy to go straight to the internet and make instant purchases. But in order to keep our local community thriving, we have to be more mindful when considering who and where we shop from. Whenever possible, I ask you to join me in looking locally first. Each month, we feature the untold stories behind

many of our business partners, sharing the challenges they have overcome, the people that make them a success and the unique services and talents they bring to Southwest Florida. While each story is different, they share a common thread: giving back to our community. At livinglocal, we strongly believe in this mission. That is one reason why we feature the great works of a local non-profit every month in our initiative, “For A Greater Cause”. This month, learn about Our Mother’s Home and how they are helping young moms in foster care rise above the system to become self-sufficient. Our Mother’s Home has a 90% success rate in keeping families together. I’d say that is an incredibly positive impact! Don’t forget to check out our website for incentives and information, and as always, thank you for living local!

B s n a M n a M Taking Care of
When you walk into either location of Love My Dog Resort and Spa, you get that cozy, intimate feeling. You really can feel the love, which is why the name Love My Dog Resort and Spa is so fitting.
Owner Kathy Skott opened the doors of Love My Dog Resort and Spa nearly 10 years ago, recently adding a second location. A couple of things inspired her to open the business. She explains, “I genuinely loved dogs and second, being a mom was my number one job. livinglocalfl.com | FEBRUARY 2018
Having my own business gave me the flexibility to never miss a sporting event or anything important for my sons. They are my priority.”
Her journey to entrepreneurship was not always easy. She says, “It was a struggle being a single mom and opening my own business. I made a lot of mistakes.” Hav ing never op ene d or manage d a busines s before, there was a lot of trial and error, but she says, “My love for dogs kept me going.”

She hopes her story will encourage women who find themselves in similar situations. Kathy says, “I want to give other women hope. You can do whatever you put your mind to and it doesn’t matter how many times you fall, it only matters that you get back up.”
It’s not easy for some pet owners to leave their animals in the care of someone else. But this story speaks for it self. When a longtime client recently passed away, he willed his dog to Kathy.
The dog was the only family the man had. Having most of same staff since she opened, Kathy says, “He knew we were trustworthy, and I think it speaks to the character of the business.” It speaks to her character as well. However, nothing sheds light on Kathy’s heart quite like the events surrounding Hurricane Irma. She had not planned on boarding any dogs during the storm and intended

on leaving but says, “I had two or three people who couldn’t get back to pick up their dogs so I couldn’t leave.” She took the animals to her house. Her phone rang off the hook, residents desperate, literally crying for help with nowhere to leave their dog. Many were in mobile homes with mandatory evacuation, or needed medical facilities because of health conditions and could not bring their dogs. Kathy couldn’t say no. By the time the storm hit, she had nearly 25 pets in her home. Thankful for her parents who stayed to help, she says, “The best part is that I had dozens of dogs in a category 4 storm, yet I had an indescribable sense of inner peace. I wasn’t scared at all.” livinglocalfl.com | FEBRUARY 2018
As the storm cleared, Kathy ventured out to check on her facilities. The first one had no electricity. The second, miraculously had power. She remembers, “I was the only building on the street with power. I just smiled to myself and knew it was a ‘God thing’ because all of Collier County had no electricity yet I did.” She slowly transferred the animals from her house to Love My Dog, saying, “I was just in disbelief I had power and thanking God the entire time. Then I understood why I had that sense of peace. God turns bad situations to good for those who trust in Him.” When word got out that she had power, people began showing up with their pets to cool off. They were completely full. People aren’t the only ones who can overheat; dogs can too.

Looking back, she says, “People thought I was crazy, taking so many a n i m a l s i nto my h o m e d u r i n g a dangerous hurricane.” But it was life saving for at least one client whose mobile home was destroyed. Had she stayed because she couldn’t take her dog with her, both could have died. Today, Kathy’s boys are in college, and she has one dog at home, a dachshund named Opa. She says about canines, “They give unconditional love and that is why I love them so much.” If you treat your dog like a member of your family, and need master grooming, doggy daycare or a loving, homey place for your fur baby to stay while you are gone, Love My Dog Resort and Spa is definitely for you.
When not taking care of dogs, Kathy attends small groups and fellowship within her church, Life Christian Church, moving soon to a new location on US41. One of them is Project Outreach; a community ministry program that helps people in Collier County. She says, “It is near and dear to my heart. The program and the church have changed my life.” She continues, “My business is where it’s at right now because of God. I give it all to Him.”

High Tech To most people, vision is the most important of the five senses. 80% of our brain’s activity comes from vision. Therefore, improving your vision will also improve your brain’s activity. Correcting vision and doing it with style is something the team at I-Topian Optical takes seriously.
The Southwest Florida business has long been known for quality and service when it comes to eyewear, but many people forget about the part that leads to the glasses…it all starts with an examination and it is anything but basic here. Dr.’s Joe and Christine Reyes perform the exams with state of the art equipment. The budding doctors met while attending high school in Southwest Florida. Upon graduating medical school they wanted to return home to work in their community. The high tech equipment they use at I-Topian consists of a microscope with a slit lamp. Dr. Joe Reyes says, “It allows me to examine the whole retina at once, where blasting it with light (like traditional equipment) I can only see a little at a time.”

ftg EYE EXAMS By Gina Birch
If you’ve had the light blasting, you know it can be uncomfortable. Dr. Reyes says this method is “easier on the patient, more thorough and better for me to diagnose a problem or a potential problem.” The image is projected to a computer screen so doctor and patient can see precise photos of the retina. The imagery is then saved so like many diagnostic tests, there is a baseline, helpful in tracking changes in the eye. Since the Reyes’ are medical optometrists, they can also treat conditions that could come up during your routine exam. One of the things that Dr. Reyes loves most about practicing at I-Topian is that the exams are never rushed and he gets to spend time with each patient. He says, “I have enough time to actually help improve someone’s lifestyle.” At I-Topian the doctors perform the entire exam themselves for the most accurate and thorough exam possible.

What Will You
RESOLVE As each new year dawns, many of us spend the weeks or months preceding the turning of the calendar contemplating potential New Year’s resolutions. I have RESOLVED to renew and further my commitment to the education of the general public and physician community regarding the wide variety of presentations of correctable superficial venous insufficiency.
It is estimated that 35-40 million adult Americans suffer from significant venous insufficiency who present with symptoms such as painful varicose veins, swollen legs, skin discoloration, restless leg syndrome, nocturnal leg cramps and frequent nighttime urination. Until the year 2000, the only treatments for venous insufficiency were compression hose or stripping. Endovenous closure, which was introduced in 2000, has significantly changed the landscape for patients with vein disease. Since its introduction, endovenous closure (the minimally invasive and effective procedure of sealing the leaky veins within the legs with a small catheter) has been successfully used to treat hundreds of thousands of patients, relieving their disabling symptoms prior to developing venous ulcers or bleeding.
Since the superficial venous system (rather than the deep system) is responsible for the majority of patients’ problems with advanced signs and symptoms of venous insufficiency, it seems only appropriate to offer patients thorough venous evaluation and definitive therapy earlier in the course of the disease process rather than making them suffer complications such as bleeding, ulceration and cellulitis. I would like to highlight an interesting patient that made a resolution to make their leg problems a priority.
C.D. is a 58-year-old female who presented through a podiatrist (the 8th physician she had seen for her legs) for evaluation of venous insufficiency. She has been told by a number of physicians that she had “fat and swollen legs” but that since she did not have any visible bulging varicose veins, Venous Insufficiency was not a consideration. Clinically, her legs were swollen, red, tender and extremely tight to the point that she could not perform activities of daily living. She RESOLVED to search further for a curable cause and her podiatrist referred her for a venous evaluation. Her ultrasound subsequently confirmed severe superficial venous insufficiency. Other symptoms

included severe leg cramps and nighttime urination. The endovenous closure was performed on both legs, 2 weeks apart and she returned for her post-op follow-up, smiling from ear to ear, with ankle bones she could actually see. The swelling had resolved and she remarked that she was wearing tennis shoes for the first time in nine months. So‌ in 2018, will you RESOLVE to address the important issue of the health of your legs? RESOLVE to live without swollen, achy, tight, red legs. Make the RESOLUTION to live a life free from painful leg cramps, nocturnal urination and restless legs. We have extended the opportunity for patients and the general public to RESOLVE their leg complaints. Vein Specialists offers a personal virtual vein consultation on either of our websites, weknowveins.com and eveinscreening.com. here is a rumor that bunion surgery is a bust; that once the protruding bone in your forefoot is shaved off, it comes back. But that’s much less likely these days according to Dr. Brad Castellano, a podiatrist and foot and ankle specialist at Gardner Orthopedics.
To correct the widening of the forefoot, Dr. Castellano has to move the bone back to its original location. He says, “The bone has to be cut and repositioned. Then very specialized screws are used to hold the bone in place.”

here is a philosophy at Park Family and Cosmetic Dentistry that is not just cerebral, but tangible. You can feel it when you walk through the door; the patient comes first. But this v iewpoint doesn’t jus t magically happen. The person who facilitates the mission of founders Dr. Long and Dr. Huynh-Le, is Practice Administrator JoAnn Toppin. Although she has worked in dentistry for over 28 years, Toppin’s career path began as a paralegal for one of the top 500 attorneys in Illinois. Turn Back the Hands of Time There are many aspects in life you can’t change; aging is one of them. You can, however, slow the process and even reverse some of its cumulative effects on your skin.
in identifying those problem areas that can be fixed with subtle changes. There are many treatments and procedures that can make a dramatic difference in appearance.”
That’s what Natalie Suero does at Natalie’s Skin Solutions.
With that experience, she specializes in injectables like Botox and fillers at Natalie’s Skin Solutions. Lavenia says, “In anesthesia, I see people getting all of these invasive procedures done, but with injectables we can stop the aging process without as much work, with minimal downtime, and it gives instant gratification.”
Suero grew up in a family of small business owners, several of whom owned hair salons, father Danny Suero included. The Southwest Florida native wanted to help people look and feel their best, and knew an aesthetic center would do just that. With that notion, she went to school for skin care and worked at a laser center doing aesthetics in a plastic surgeon’s office. The more she learned, the more she noticed specific areas that could be improved upon when offering aesthetic services. Educating patients was a big one. She solved the problem by partnering with a colleague to open Gulf Coast Academy, the only school of its kind in the area. Not only was she able to educate her clients, she could also now educate her work force, too. Ryann Lavenia, CRNA, ARNP, is one of the many skilled professionals who’ve joined Suero’s team. Working in anesthesia for twelve years, Lavenia says, “I’ve worked closely with experts
livinglocalfl.com | FEBRUARY 2018
Suero agrees. When clients come to her for help with their skin and aging concerns, she says, “I give people a customized plan, both long and short term. I spend time with them and I follow through.” Most importantly, she educates them. This is one of the reasons why surgeons refer so many of their patients to Suero. They are confident that she will help their post-op patients with both healing and maintenance. People come into Natalie’s unhappy about their appearance, but Suero says when they leave after a treatment, “Their personality changes, they get excited, and they have more confidence. It’s just wonderful to make people look and feel better.”

eliev i ng R & Anxiety Stress with
Med ical Marijuana
By Gina Birch
S
ome 40-million adults in the United States suffer from anxiety. Only a small percentage ever seek treatment and of those who do, most turn to pharmaceuticals, which have a wide range of less than desirable side effects. Dr. Sonn, founder of Iona Health and Wellness, has seen great success when prescribing medical marijuana for patients with anxiety problems and disorders. About cannabis, he says, “What’s cool about this is it’s helping a system we already have in our body…it’s one of the only drugs in the world that mimics our neurochemical receptors. Medical marijuana works the same whether it’s produced by our body or not.”
When prescribing cannabis to patients, Dr. Sonn says, “I like to start oral, with oils and tinctures. Everyone’s dosing is different so I need to figure out your ratio.” Dr. Sonn grew up in Fort Myers and is an integrative physician who treats the whole person, not just the disease. The doctor says, “I like to teach people how to change their lives for the better.” He has extensive medical experience, and vast knowledge behind the science of medical marijuana, a treatment that he says, “It’s not recreational…I call it medicine.”
Coming from a plant, it’s a natural drug that calms hyperactive states such as anxiety along with a laundry list of other ailments. Cannabis has also proven to be a successful treatment for stress relief. Dr. Sonn explains why this is important, saying, “Stress is inversely propor tionate to disease. As your stress level goes up, your immune system goes down and the more likely you are to become sick.”

CHANGING
Lives
the
of
TEEN MOMS
There are more than 2,000 children in foster care in Southwest Florida, some 14,000 statewide. The options aren’t good when an adolescent female becomes pregnant, but hope is alive and well at Our Mother’s Home of Southwest Florida.
The home was established some 17 years ago to keep mother and child together, removing them from foster care while helping them to become self-sufficient. More than 200 young moms have come through the doors of Our Mother’s Home with a 90% success rate. Karen Watson has been involved in the home for 10 years, spending the past 6 as the executive director. When she came on board, there was no strategic plan in place. She had less than $300,000 to work with, but thanks to her vision and expertise she has continued to grow the operation, more than doubling the funding. livinglocalfl.com | FEBRUARY 2018
Life at the house involves daily chores, cooking rotations and nightly dinners. Watson says, “We try to make it as normal as possible.” The residents take parenting and financial classes, receive job training, are given transportation to doctors and therapy appointments, and perhaps most importantly, they receive daycare assistance so they can stay in school. 17-year-old Angela Manley is one of those girls. She says, “When I first got here, I had bad trust issues. I was really quiet and isolated.” She suffered from anxiety and depression, didn’t want to go to school, and had fallen behind in her studies. Two years later, Manley is not only on track to graduate, she’s looking forward to college. She says, “I love math, it’s my best subject, and reading too.” She hopes to become a nurse, specializing in care for children.

“For A Greater Cause” is a monthly initiative of livinglocal, spotlighting a local nonprofit that is making a difference in our community. livinglocal also makes a monetary donation to the nonprofit on the behalf of its advertising partners.
Giving girls like Manley the tools they need to be successful in life takes funding. But besides the constant crusade to secure financial backing, Watson says the biggest challenge she faces is changing public perception. She asks people to, “look at these young ladies as choosing life, regardless of how they were impregnated. They think people look down on them because they are young and with child.” However, the casual observer has no idea that one young woman was impregnated by her father, another through human trafficking. Watson says, “Some girls have to learn to love and forgive their child. It’s tough during a pregnancy that they don’t want, to learn to forgive and move on.” Volunteers are always needed. If this is a mission that speaks to you, Manley says, “We have a family vibe and a good time here. I don’t’ know where I’d be right now with out Our Mother’s Home.” When you ask Watson about the program’s success, she says, “Success for me is healing. If they can heal their trauma, pain and hurt, they can be successful in anything else in life.”
