ou know that saying about March coming in like a lion? For once I hope it does, driving all of the flu and sickness away. It’s been a tough season for so many, me included! I’m ready to get outside and see some baseball… it’s finally Spring Training time. While the traffic is never any fun, this is still one of the most exciting times of the year for both businesses and residents of Southwest Florida. For our cover story this month, Living Local goes behind the scenes of the new MedSpa Del Mar in Naples. It’s a beautiful location with unique services, but what I enjoyed most about my visit

was meeting the people who make it work. If you have ever had a vision for a business, or are currently trying to form one now, you will likely relate to this story. March is the kick off for one of Habitat for Humanity’s most successful local programs, Women Build. As a woman, to say I was intrigued by this initiative is an understatement. I love the philosophy behind the program and how it empowers women from all walks of life. Habitat changes lives in ways I didn’t even realize until reading this story. It may even inspire you get involved this year. At least that’s what we’re hoping! Stay well and remember to keep Living Local.

BRINGING
Beautiful
TO F I F T H AV EN U E SO U T H “Sparkly is my favorite word. I like things to sparkle and shine and bling,” says Denise Morris, the enthusiastic owner of the new Medspa del Mar on Fifth Avenue South in Naples. Not only does her space shine, but so do her clients when they leave after receiving a host of services including facials, laser treatments, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and so much more. Perched on the second floor of an ornate building at the corner of 5th Avenue South and 9th Street South, Medspa del Mar is light, fresh and has a fantastic view of the chic and trendy downtown area. While this is Denise’s first med spa, she is not new to the industry or to business. Growing up in South Carolina she says, “In high school I was a bit of an ugly duckling.” Her mother passed away when Denise was just 14 years old. She remembers, “Life was hard. All I wanted was to be pretty, to feel pretty, but I realized that starts inside.” Continued on next| page livinglocalfl. com MARCH 2018
The seahorse printed on black business cards is beautiful but also a symbol of masculinity. Men as well as women are catered to at MedSpa Del Mar. It’s that feeling from her teenage years that fuels her passion today, “I want to help women feel beautiful all of the time, whatever it takes.” It wasn’t until the wellness bug bit her, that Denise actually started to feel good. The adventurous young woman moved to California and that is where her Cinderella story takes flight; she met her husband of 24 years, Ric. He was a highly sought after and very successful personal trainer, with celebrity clients in the Los Angeles area. Denise watched his business grow and began to think of ways to capture his audience; people that cared about their health and how they looked. Working out was just one piece of the wellness puzzle. With a business management degree, Denise describes herself as a “numbers girl” who just so happened to have her finger on the pulse of the beauty industry. She began getting Botox in her late 20’s and traveled the country researching top medspas, explaining, “I wanted to experience top quality services and see if I got my money’s worth.” The entrepreneur wanted to make sure her clients had that feeling in spades when they left the business she was forming in her dreams. livinglocalfl. com | MARCH 2018
Working for big name cosmetics counters in department stores, she continued putting the pieces of her vision together. Today that vision is finally a reality that you can see, touch, and experience at Medspa del Mar. The name is Spanish for ‘of the sea.’ Denise explains, “I’m all about the sand, sun, and surf,” and it’s a theme she wanted to incorporate in Medspa del Mar from the services, to the decor and even the mascot; a seahorse named Deseo (desire in Spanish.) Her husband is fluent in Spanish and helped with the creative names. The seahorse printed on black business cards is beautiful but also a symbol of masculinity. Men as well as women are catered to at Medspa del Mar. In fact, Ric is not just her biggest supporter but also a client. Denise says, “I get an eye roll at times but he has been good about trying the services.” Her husband chimes in, “I had laser treatment on my hands and now there isn’t a spot on them. I didn’t know much about lasers and was pleasantly surprised at the results.” The super high tech laser nicknamed “Flash” has amazing next generation capabilities, from hair removal to wrinkle

reduction, to scar and stretch mark and sun damage treatment. It’s the only laser to offer the ThreeForMe™ laser treatment - the proven way to reduce wrinkles, sun damage, and facial veins all at the same time. Operated by a highly trained and certified technician, there isn’t a laser on the market like this one, with its range of treatments for a variety of skin tones. Medspa del Mar is a result driven business, clients feel and look better the minute they walk out of the door. When the door to the treatment room closes for your service, the attention to detail is superb. The music, the products and the provider transport you into total relaxation. The Morris’ are adamant about the scope of their practice, staying within the boundaries of their license. Clients have a warranted expectation that oversight of all procedures is done by a highly qualified medspa director. Unfortunately that is not always the case according to Ric, who explains, “Although the state has regulations you don’t have to go too far to see people bending and subverting the rules.” Dr. Manuel Pena is Medspa del Mar’s medical director. Denise calls him a “rock star in the plastic surgery scene
of Naples.” He is an active part of the business who on occasion will provide services personally. Along with the attentive medical director, you’ll also find Dr. Marianne Mason, who offers another layer of medical professionalism. On site regularly, she skillfully performs injections and other advanced services. Medspa del Mar has a combined staff of MD’s, PA’s, nurse practitioners and medical estheticians that are top in their field. Ric says, “(Denise) took two years to lay the groundwork and network with the best providers.” She used that time to get to know the community and find the best team so it’s more like a family, rather than a business. Ric says about his wife’s business success, “I think there have been lots of happy moments in her life but this is the most fulfilling. She is very driven and so fulfilled to create and realize her vision.” “I’m a southern girl,” says Denise, her subtle accent giving her away. “There’s something about swinging on the front porch, sipping sweet tea, enjoying fresh air and you think ‘this is the greatest day ever.’ That’s how I want people to feel when they leave here.”com And| they do. livinglocalfl. Experience Counts for Cataract Surgery
By Gina Birch
S
er ving the Southwest Florida community for 30 years, Dr. Thomas Quigley, founder of Quigley Eye Specialists, is not only celebrated locally, he is also one of the leading cataract surgeons in the country. It’s not just the fact that Dr. Quigley has been performing this surgery for three decades that puts him at the top of the list, it’s also the sheer number of surgeries preformed within those years. You know the old adage ‘practice makes perfect?’ Consider these figures; where most cataract surgeons average a few thousand cases in a lifetime, Dr. Quigley has performed more than 80,000 cataract procedures to date. If you have cataracts, choosing the right surgeon is a big decision, and experience is one of the most important things to consider. When you choose a surgeon who is in the top 1% of his or her profession nationwide, the complication rate for that surgeon is typically lower.
For example, given Dr. Quigley’s experience with cataract surgery, his complication rate is significantly lower than the national average. Dr. Quigley grew up in a small town in Mississippi, the son of a general medical practitioner. Graduating second in his class while attending medical school at LSU, Dr. Quigley knew he wanted to stay in the south. Visiting a friend in Naples he remembers his first impressions, “It was a beautiful area. (Chuckling) And I noticed it was a popular place to retire.” Wanting to specialize in eye care for an aging population, it was an important observation. At the time, the area was vastly under served; the average wait to see an ophthalmologist was three months. Setting up practice in Fort Myers with a staff of two and zero patients, his dedication, commitment and excellent care propelled Quigley Eye Specialist to where it is today; eight

Is Out
Americans have a growing love affair with online shopping and while convenient, this method of getting goods doesn’t translate well for all items; eyeglasses being one of them. Eyewear needs to be f it ted. Kelly Chasnov, optician at I-Topian Optical says, “When you purchase online, you can’t try on the glasses for accuracy and you still may have to visit an optician for help.” She jokes, “They’re technically a medical device. You don’t buy glasses where you buy your meat.” Yes, that includes that six-pack of ‘cheaters’ at the checkout. Online purchasing may seem simple and you may think you’re saving money, but you could end up frustrated and paying more in the end. You have both affordability and personal care at I-Topian where they offer a great selection of FREE fames with a lens purchase. The only way to really find the best material and design for your needs is through physically touching and trying them. If the bridge of the frame is off, it can be painful or irritating to your nose and ears. A licensed optician has the education and tools to fit you with the best lens for your eyes.

FOR PRESCRIPTION EYEWEAR
By Gina Birch
Chasnov explains, “Measurements are important. If not made properly, your glasses can also cause eye strain and headaches – the same is true for over the counter readers.” Standard measurements are used to make those glasses; most faces aren’t standard. I-Topian has been the premier purveyor of luxury and custom eyewear in Southwest Florida for nearly twenty years. Chasnov has an eye for making sure your frames fit your face as well as personality. And when filling your prescription she says, “We don’t just put numbers in a computer. We verify it three times and then go through a check list to make sure they are flawless.” Order online and they show up in a box. Good luck. If you are unhappy with your online eyeglass purchase, take them to Chasnov. She’ll give you a $100 store credit so you can experience the difference that a personal, professional and local touch makes.

Do You Have a
LEG WOUND That Won’t Go AWAY?
By Dr. Joseph G. Magnant, MD, FACS, RPVI
Today it is more important than ever for patients to take a more active role in researching their medical care. Fortunately, the internet has provided the means by which patients can perform background research on their health care providers’ training and experience and choose the most appropriate specialist. Leg ulcers are a common source of distress for many patients and may have a variety of causes. The key to successful management of lower limb ulcers is determining the underlying problem as early in the treatment process as possible. Ulcers can be broadly classified into one of three etiologies: arterial, venous, or neuropathic. Arterial ulcers are typically characterized by extreme pain in a pale appearing wound which may have necrotic edges. Pulses may be absent or diminished, and the lower legs or feet may lack hair and the nails may be thickened. Patients may complain of pain in their feet across their toes when they elevate their legs in bed (rest pain). Risk factors for developing peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which is the underlying cause of arterial ulcers, are diabetes, advanced age, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, high cholesterol and a strong family history. Incidental wounds or injuries often develop into non-healing ulcers in patients with PAD, examples of which include biopsy of a skin lesion, traumatic injury or a surgical incision. Often, these are insignificant wounds which would heal without delay in a patient with normal arterial circulation, but fester and grow in size in patients with compromised arterial supply. Accurate diagnosis can be established with non-invasive vascular laboratory testing and minimally invasive
treatments are available which often involve the use of balloons, stents, LASERs and other devices which actually remove excess plaque and restore normal arterial blood flow. Delayed attention in a patient with an arterial ulcer may result in eventual amputation.
Venous ulcers are much more common than arterial ulcers and often affect a younger, healthier population. They typically appear in the area just above the ankle on the medial or inside surface of the calf, although they can occur in other areas as well. There is often a strong family history of venous insufficiency in patients with venous ulcers, and there may be other signs of venous insufficiency in these patients such as varicose veins, leg swelling or skin discoloration. Patients may also have a variety of symptoms including leg fatigue, achiness or pain which worsens by the end of the day, sitting, or standing and improves with elevation and walking. The underlying cause is venous hypertension, which if left untreated may lead to skin thickening and pigmentation (stasis dermatitis). Stasis dermatitis (or lipodermatosclerosis-fat and skin scarred to the underlying muscle tissue of the legs) is a precursor to ulceration, as minor injuries in diseased skin tend to heal poorly. Early investigation of the venous circulation by a qualified vein specialist, with a detailed venous insufficiency ultrasound will often disclose the culprit vein or veins with leaky valves. A variety of minimally invasive treatments are very effective and all share the same goal of sealing the leaking vein closed in an effort at returning the venous pressure to normal levels. Once this has been accomplished, ulcers often heal without much delay. In 15-20% of patients with venous ulcers, there may be a deeper, pelvic vein problem where the outflow veins

are compressed or pinched. There are new methods of making this diagnosis and minimally invasive techniques for opening these blocked pelvic veins are very effective. If you have had a chronic lower extremity ulcer for more than 3 months and have not had a thorough vascular evaluation including the arterial and venous circulation, take the initiative to schedule an evaluation on your own. Neuropathic ulcers are most common seen in diabetics as a result of deterioration of the peripheral nerves and subsequent weakening of the bonds which hold the bones of the feet together. Muscles often atrophy and the normal architecture of the feet change resulting in weight bearing on improper parts of the feet which leads to callus formation. Neuropathy my also result in a wound not being recognized, especially on the plantar surface of the feet, which may lead to serious infections of the deep soft tissue and bones in more severe cases. Pulses in diabetics may be normal or diminished based on the age of the patient and whether there is also a history of arterial disease. Diabetic neuropathy is usually not affected by the time of day and is often described as a stocking glove distribution. Regardless of the etiology of a lower extremity wound, they should be taken seriously and treated with a sense of urgency, as the mere presence of an open wound serves as a portal of entry for bacteria to enter the blood stream and
risk infecting existing artificial joints, heart valves and bone spurs of the spine and other bones. Rather than just treating the wound with a variety of topical agents, it is critical to identify the root cause of the ulcer and obtain trained professional care for the underlying problem. I have seen too many patients suffering for years with ulcers of indeterminate cause, only to be found to have straight forward venous disease. Once the underlying venous disease is identified and treated appropriately, the ulcers heal within 4-6 weeks with patient directed wound care. In conclusion, if you have a non-healing wound, you deserve a thorough assessment to determine the underlying cause. Vein Specialists has offices in Fort Myers and Bonita Springs and is a leading outpatient vein center in Southwest Florida. Vein Specialists is committed to excellence in vein care and is dedicated to increasing physician and public awareness of venous disease. he owners of Park Family Dentistry, Dr. Long Huynh and Dr. Huynh-Le, have a heart; a heart for their patients, a heart for their staff and a heart for the community they call home. Not only do they empower employees with leadership meetings, trainings and the likes, they empower those around them who desperately need dental care but can’t afford it, through events like Dentistry from the Heart.
Years ago the Park Family team formed a charity committee, headed by Terrie Kleinberger. The group maps out causes and events to support each month while planning one of their own: Dentistry From the Heart.
O
For the past four years and for one day only, the dental practice opens its doors to anyone in the community in need of an extraction, a filling or teeth cleaning. They guarantee to see at least the first 200 patients at this year’s event on May 12th. The undertaking is much bigger than the means of one practice, so dentists, hygienists and dental assistants from as far away as Tampa donate their time and talents. Dental help is given on a first-come first-serve basis with some people so desperate they camp out in the parking lot. Kleinbergers says, “We got in at 4am the first year and there was a line.”

Registration begins around 6:00am when Kleinberger says, “We huddle up and put a plan in place for the day, then keep going until we get it all done.” One year they ran out of time and energy as the sun was going down, so rain checks were offered to those still waiting. It takes a lot of effort and people to put on an event like this so the call is going out to dental professionals who can donate any amount of time to this year’s event. However, the call for help doesn’t stop there. Kleinberger says, “We are still looking for volunteers and sponsors.” Sponsors range from donating food and drinks, to monetary contributions. Some even set up booths the day of the event. Other volunteers are needed to help take care of those waiting, and a band will be on site for entertainment to make the event more fun and festive. Kleinberger says the rewards are “huge,” explaining, “To see somebody in pain or discomfort come here and leave with a smile on their face, it gives me goose bumps and keeps me going the whole day no matter how tired I am.” She says, “It really fills your heart. We all feel that way we all look forward to it every year.”

ADDRESSING YOUR
Shoulder Pain
By Gina Birch
If you have chronic shoulder pain and
have been chalking it up to arthritis, think again. Dr. Robert Martinez from Gardner Orthopedics says, “The most common shoulder problems are bursitis and rotator cuff tears. People think it is arthritis but normally it isn’t.”
points in the shoulder that thicken with age. That thickening closes the space where the muscle goes underneath the collarbone, causing it to rub when you lift your arm. It’s a relatively easy fix-if you address it early-through a procedure called an arthroscopy. The arthroscope is like a miniature telescope. Then using a burring device, you can insert it into the shoulder to shave off the spur.
Most of that pain is caused by a spur that has grown under the collarbone; it pinches when someone lifts his or her arm overhead. It may also hurt to sleep on your shoulder at night. Many people don’t seek help for their shoulder pain In the late 80’s, Dr. Martinez was one of because they brush it off as arthritis or the first orthopedic doctors in Southwest are afraid of potential surgery. Florida to perform a shoulder arthroscopy.
However, Dr. Martinez says, “Sometimes This technology has increased to the all you need are anti-inflammatory point where he can also repair muscles medications or a cortisone shot.” and tears with the arthroscope, as well as address issues with the bicep tendon While injury accounts for some, most in the front of the shoulder. shoulder problems are simply degendegen erative. “It’s like when you get older If a spur gets bigger, it can tear the you get wrinkles and grey hair,” says rotator cuff making things a bit more Dr. Martinez. He explains there are complicated.
livinglocalfl.com | MARCH 2018
Sometimes Dr. Martinez can reattach the muscle but says, “You have to do it relatively quickly, before the muscle atrophies, or you face a shoulder replacement.” He adds, “Usually I’m able to pull the muscle back into place. There are ways to lengthen the muscle but it can only give so much.” For the most difficult cases, the doctor has a new option where a modified human skin graft is placed over the top of the shoulder joint and hooked to the socket keeping the shoulder from riding up and hitting the collar bone. If you are suffering from shoulder pain, it’s time to get some relief. Call Dr. Martinez at Gardner Orthopedics.

About Dr. Martinez
Dr. Martinez was born in Cuba where his father was a professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Havana. When the family fled the island they landed in Columbia, eventually settling in Odessa, Texas. As a teenager, the budding doctor would help his father in surgery as a scrub tech; his path for a career in medicine set in stone. Dr. Martinez went to medical school at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and received his orthopedic training at the University of New Mexico. When he came to Southwest Florida for a job interview more than 20 years ago, the hotel he checked into had “Welcome Bob Martinez” on the marque. He remembers thinking, “Wow they really want me.” Bob Martinez was the governor at the time…he was visiting also.

Born in Falls Church, Virginia, 27-year-old Travis Garrett discovered his love for cooking through his father, a decorated chef in Boston, Massachusetts. Since beginning his career, he has already accumulated over 10 years in the culinary biz. His first five were spent in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania learning the keys to Italian cuisine, followed by another five years working with fine dining and sports eateries in Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. Recently, he decided to move to Florida after wanting to get involved in the tropical side of cuisine and has been serving up just that as the Executive Chef of Parrot Key Caribbean Grill.

Serving up Food with
Flair
By Gina Birch
hen you walk into Maguro Sushi and Steakhouse, you might just be greeted by applause and shrieks of excitement. While it’s nice to think the welcome is for you, the energy is coming from the Asian restaurant’s popular Hibachi room. More laid back fun is found at the small sushi bar or in the comfortable dining room. Bamboo dividers separate the dining from the spacious bar where you can begin the evening with traditional cocktails as well as photo worthy specials. Try the popular Lychee Martini with vodka, lychee juice and a drizzle of elderflower liquor, garnished with a bright flower and a juicy lychee. Refreshing and colorful, the Cosmo Bellini has Grey Goose le Citron, peach puree, cranberry, and prosecco.

Sake is taken seriously here thanks to owner Denny Zhang who looks at it like a fine wine. The list is impressive with selections like Horrin; elegant and fruity, yet dry with a spicy finish. The Hibachi room, with it’s modern blue back lighting, is where you’ll find most of the action. Hibachi or teppanyaki is not just about eating; it’s also about entertainment. Chefs flip their kitchen tools with ninja skills, spin raw eggs, and create mesmerizing bursts of flames on the cooktop just inches from your seat. The large rectangular tables are per fec t for families and all kinds of celebrations. For bir thdays, employees don traditional Chinese lion heads and parade to your table to the beat of a drum.

Denny and his wife Tracy, humble and personable, have created a nice community of regulars. Six years ago, the couple left their large families in New York City to begin a new life as restaurateurs in Naples. Denny’s father was a chef. Growing up in the business, he says, “You have to love food to open a restaurant.” When he’s not meticulously inspecting the deliveries or cooking at Maguro, he is eating at other restaurants; not just to check out the competition but because he is passionate about cuisine. When it comes to quality products, Denny is vigilant, especially with the fish. Perhaps it’s why he’s garnered the reputation as serving some of the best sushi in Southwest Florida.
It’s not just about the surf, but also the turf at Maguro. “People compare our steak to what is served at some high-end steak houses in the area. Our filet is a fraction of the cost,” says the entrepreneur of Chinese decent. He continues, “Americans love steak and they know quality. I have to only take top quality.” One of his favorite dishes in the dining room is Crispy Duck. For appetizers, the Tuna Taco has great flavors and textures. You may fight over the last piece of the tuna twister. Seared Ahi wraps around kani and mango, with a citrus ponzu sauce that is spicy, sweet, and oh so good. With several dining options under one roof, Denny says, “I love food and want to update the menu all the time. You never know who will walk in so everyday I keep it fresh and new.” livinglocalfl.com | MARCH 2018

lorida law regarding the use of medical marijuana officially changed this past July allowing seasonal and full-time residents with a host of ailments, broader access to the natural herb for treatment options. Dr. Gregory Sonn, founder of Iona Cannabis Clinic, has been prescribing a non-euphoric strain of cannabis since it became legal in 2014, but the new laws open doors for him to help even more people. Growing up in Fort Myers, Dr. Sonn specialized in palliative care for many years; his medical background is quite extensive. Today his holistic practice focuses on the overall health and wellness of a person. The use of cannabis figures promipromi nently in his treatments, in everything from topical creams, to capsules, oils, tinctures, and inhalation. F or people w ho t hink medial marijuana is just about getting high, think again. Dr. Sonn explains, “It’s one of the only drugs in the world that mimics our neurochemical receptors.” Unlike many pharmaceuticals that affect the body in numerous ways he says cannabis, “just does one thing that works for all symptoms…it slows things down.”
Whether treating patients who have nausea from chemo or suffer from anxiety Dr. Sonn says, “Things work more efficiently in your body when they are slow and steady.” When the body is calm it decreases stress and pain that can eventually beat up your immune system, causing more sickness. The physician starts slowly when prescribing cannabis, personalizing each treatment, something you wont find in most medical marijuana practices, the majority of which have a corporate backing, not local. It’s an important distinction and consideration…one that set s Dr. Sonn apart.

Women BUILD FOR
“It has changed my life so much for the better, I can’t even put into words.” —Eva, 2016 Women Build Recipient
March is the kick-off for one of Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties’ most inspiring programs—Women Build. This fiscal year, Habitat has a goal to build 64 homes, three of which are chosen for the Women Build program. “It’s designed to bring empowerment to women but also awareness to Habitat,” says Habitat Community Program Director Elisha Baird. This year’s event kicked off with an inspirational address from motivational speaker Dr. Tererai Trent, an Oprah Winfrey’s “All-Time Favorite Guest.” Teams of women pledged to raise $170,000 by April 28th to build one new home and rehab two homes. While contractors take care of electric, plumbing, and AC, the female volunteers install cabinets, flooring, base-boards, doors, soffit and fascia, do the painting, and landscaping, all in the two weeks leading up to Mother’s Day. Habitat for Humanity homebuyers, do indeed ‘buy’ their homes; nothing is free. Candidates must have decent credit and
be able to pay for closing costs. They are also required to take financial literacy and homeownership classes to learn how to take care of their house once they get it. Finally, Habitat candidates must put in 300 hours of sweat equity, physical labor, on their home. Baird says, “They pay taxes and insurance like anyone else. They have a mortgage customized to their ability to pay, helping them achieve the American dream.” Eva is a 2016 Women Build recipient in Cape Coral. She says, “I was going through a rough time, living with my parents in two bedrooms, and with two autistic kids.” Because her daughter often displayed aggressive behavior, Eva could not keep an apartment. Two months out from being approved for Section 8 Housing, she got booted from the program; her daughter had spent the better part of eight months in the hospital and Eva had trouble keeping up with the housing paperwork.

“For A Greater Cause” is a monthly initiative of livinglocal, spotlighting a local nonprofit that is making a difference in our community. livinglocal also makes a monetary donation to the nonprofit on the behalf of its advertising partners.
Discouraged and with no hope, she applied for Habitat. “It has changed my life so much for the better, I can’t even put into words,” she says, voice shaking with emotion. The single mom now has enough space for her children to get therapy at home. She says, “I never realized it would have such a huge impact on their lives. My daughter is a whole different child and my son is learning sign language. I never imagined something like a home would change their lives to the magnitude that it has.” Wanting to give back, Eva volunteers every year for Women Build. As for Baird, it is her third season with Women Build and she is excited. She gushes, “I have a strong passion for helping people and wanting to empower women so they have a voice.” Coming from a ministry background, she says, “I have a heart for service and when I heard about the Women Build program I knew it was meant for me.”
