s quickly as it began, it’s hard to believe that season is already starting to wind down! Time is definitely marching on, and we are moving right along with it. I’d like to thank you for all the positive feedback on the growth of livinglocalTM , specifically the addition of more content. Perhaps the area that I’m most excited about is the expansion of our medical content. KNEE PAIN
WITHOUT SURGERY By Gina Birch
“We have people we’ve been treating for 16 years, who originally came in for a knee replacement and haven’t had one yet. They’re still playing golf and tennis, and leading active lifestyles.” It’s statements like this from Dr. Ronald Gardner, owner of Gardner Orthopedics, which gives hope to thousands of Southwest Floridians suffering with osteoarthritis knee pain. Although Dr. Gardner has been in the area for nearly 30 years, this month (April) marks the three-year anniversary of his eponymous practice. When he decided to establish a business in Southwest Florida, there were no fellowship trained arthroscopic reconstruction surgeons between Tampa and Miami; Dr. Gardner was the first. Attending college at Samford University in Alabama and unhappy with his course of study, he visited his sister, a nurse who was working in a hospital maternity ward nursery. She introduced him to a pediatric surgeon who, in turn, invited the future doctor to accompany him on hospital rounds that day. “The very first room, the very first kid we saw had been on deaths doorstep in

the ER the night before,” remembers Dr. Gardner. The 6-year-old had emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix. “He was sitting on the floor playing with cars, and struggled to get up and greet the doctor, his abdomen sore from the night before,” recalls Dr. Gardner. He continues, “His mother got up crying and hugged the doctor saying ‘you saved my baby, you saved my baby.’” Vividly reliving the memory, he says passionately, “This guy impacted people on a one-onone basis, impacting lives in such a huge way. I thought, how could you not want to do that?” Having an active childhood that included sports injuries, Dr. Gardner also had an affinity for home repairs, motorcycle and car repairs. Put those experiences together and orthopedics became a perfect fit. Dr. Gardner is most passionate about knees, saying, “Most people with knee arthritis do not need surgery. There are some who have bone on bone x-rays but still don’t need it. Then there are some who really need replacements, but my opinion is that they are the minority.” Continued on next page

In the late 90’s, a new injectable hyaluronic acid medication became available: a non-surgical way to frequently eliminate knee pain. Dr. Gardner tried it, but with marginal success. He remembers, “An article came out in 2002 suggesting that even orthopedic surgeons were not getting in the actual knee joint space with their injections almost half of the time. It hit me that maybe it’s not working because I’m not in the actual knee joint space every time.” Putting his pride aside, he visited a doctor in the Tampa area who was doing the injections under fluoroscopic control — an X-ray like process — to make sure the injections were indeed hitting the right spot. When Dr. Gardner began using that technique, he says, “The results went through the roof.” In fact, his joint replacement numbers dropped from as many as 150 a year, to at times not

even one a week. It was a turning point. The compassionate surgeon’s commitment to finding non-operative solutions to debilitating arthritis in the knee has become a driving force over the years. When Dr. Gardner is introduced to new therapies, he does extensive research, even visiting other physicians using the techniques to determine if they would work in his practice. Over the years, he has incorporated the use of platelet rich plasma and more recently prolotherapy, a less expensive procedure using non-biological substances to stimulate healing. Now with a treatment arsenal stocked with numerous options, Dr. Gardner says, “We have multiple layers of treatments to fit multiple needs, multiple indications and multiple economic levels, for people who don’t want surgery.” As an outgrowth of those options, Gardner Orthopedics

has one of the largest active knee osteoarthritis patient populations in all of Southwest Florida. There is even more on the horizon; utilizing fetal cord blood derived stem cell therapy. “We only incorporate things that have an 80% plus success rate,” says Dr. Gardner. His definition of success is pain relief greater than 50%. If you are in pain, that indeed spells success. Surgery is not without risk and when people with osteoarthritis knee pain are told they need it, the news often creates fear. Surprisingly, some never seek a second opinion. “I’ve had people break down in my office and cry when I’ve said, ‘I think we can get you better without surgery’,” says Dr. Gardner. That being said, there ARE still people with advanced arthritis, and when all else fails, surgery remains the only sensible option. For those patients, Dr. Gardner
does over 200 joint replacements a year. hen Sharon Chambry entered the W optical field at age 19, she thought it was merely going to be a summer sales position at Sterling Optical in Rochester, NY. She quickly realized that not only did she love the optical field, but that is was a viable career. Soon after being hired, Sharon was promoted to a three-year apprentice optician program. ave you ever watched a home improvement show on television and wished someone could help you freshen up your space, or fix the things that just don’t work? That’s exactly what Theresa Clements does at Clements Interior Design. Clements has been in the interior design business for more than 25 years, and was even featured on HGTV. Originally an owner of Galloway’s, Clements and Associates in Royal Palm Square, she had what she calls ‘a dream team’ of architects, designers, builders and contractors, all ready to work on major projects. Clements Interior Design is a spinoff of sorts, targeting the everyday homeowner who wants to make a home update but needs the help of an expert. She says, “I’m trying to reach people who wouldn’t think of a calling a designer.” Although the name has recently changed, the Fast & Frugal concept continues to be a service we extend to our clients. If a home consultation is all you have the budget for, she’ll come in and decide on a game plan, giving you a road map of where to go and how to achieve exactly what you want. If you need more direct assistance, the designer says, “Get on your running shoes, we’re gonna work.” She’ll take you to furniture, consignment and home improvement stores to find the perfect pieces, paint colors and more, all within your budget.
About her job, Clements says, “It’s exciting for me to open new doors to clients and give them a way to solve what they thought was a huge problem.” She continues, “Once you see their vision, the fun thing is giving them the best version of that vision.”

ORGANIZING Y O U R S PA C E AND YOUR MIND By Gina Birch
“An organized home is an organized mind.” So says Chas Hollan, a designer with All About Closets. Originally from Tarpon Springs, the native Floridian makes a living turning chaos into calm, and she’s really good at it. Growing up, Hollan says, “My room was always clean and the bed made—always. Everything had a place.” She also had a talent for drawing and painting. Before discovering All About Closets, the master organizer never imagined finding a career so perfectly suited for her both talents and her personality. Interior design and organization was a hobby for the stay at home mom until just five years ago. She would come to the rescue of friends and other mom’s who were in desperate need of organization, as their families grew. She remembers, “I never thought someone would spend money on a closet but once you do it and realize the function and storage it gives you, you can never go back.” “Life gets crazy busy and in some cases people just want a room that is theirs,” says Hollan. She has a client who put a chair and lamp in her closet so she would have a place to escape to and read. Hollan spends a lot of time with builders, helping them make the most out of their blueprints before a foundation is poured, and also with designers who need assistance after a home has been built.

But it’s the individual client she often has the most fun with, many of whom don’t just want better closets, but want them to make a statement. She says, “I can make it simple or over the top, like a Carry Bradshaw closet from “Sex in the City.”” Once she gets an idea of what her client wants, she creates a design plan using high tech computer programs that offer 3D views and more. Then the homeowner can see every little detail. All About Closets has a team of craftsmen who custom make the shelves, drawers, islands and anything else the design calls for. “We don’t have any sub contractors and most of our installers have been with us from the beginning,” says Hollan. She adds, “We take really good care of our employees.” All About Closets is a locally owned company that has been in business for more than twenty years. As for Hollan’s own closet, she says, “The storage in my townhome is awful. “One of the most common questions I get from patients is ‘ what a re t hose black lines around my teeth?’,” says Dr. Katrine Farag, owner of Advanced Dentistry of Fort Myers.

Those unappealing lines can also be caused by decay. “Some patients are under the false impression that just because a tooth is covered with a crown or veneer it is imper vious to decay,” explains Dr. Farag. That is not the case. Crowns can last a lifetime but they can also become loose or even fall out; this is just one of the many reasons why good oral hygiene is so important. Speaking of hygiene, dental plaque from bacteria can be another cause for black lines, according to the doctor. Fortunately, this issue is a preventable one. Simply brush your teeth on a regular basis and floss daily, especially after meals. “Another very common cause of black lines between teeth is the recession of gums. This condition can be caused by over brushing, periodontal disease, tooth grinding and shifting of teeth. That dark area you are seeing is the actual root structure,” says Dr. Farag. In these instances the appearance of lines is often accompanied by tooth sensitivity. The bottom line according to Dr. Farag, “It is important to make regular visits to ensure that your crowns are maintaining integrity and functioning properly.”

ickory BBQ is a historic part of Lee County’s dinning scene. Originally opening its doors in 1956, the BBQ restaurant is still serving some of its original mouthwatering recipes, even though ownership has since changed. The prices have changed too; the original menu, posted on the back wall, reads “Rib Plate $1.55 and Iced Tea .10. “An accountant came in here once and crunched the numbers using an inflation calculator and we are dead on,” laughs Jeremy Kendall, co-owner of the restaurant. The Fort Myers native had been living in Knoxville, Tennessee when his father, Jim Kendall, called with a proposition. He wanted to buy the family owned Hickory BBQ and wanted his son by his side.

“It had been a dream of my father to run a restaurant with me.” Jeremy continues, “The thing that we tried to do more than anything was to maintain the integrity of the original recipes.” That being said, the Kendall’s have added a couple of new things to the lineup such as mouthwatering, Southern-style collard greens and salty, delicious black-eyed peas. The hushpuppies have the perfect crispness and the back beans the right amount of sweetness. But sides aside, it’s the meat that takes top billing and getting it just right is both an art and a science. Over the years, Jim worked for the previous owners off and on, learning the tricks of the trade from skilled pit masters. Jeremy explains, “A pit

E H T n I l l A T A FAMILY master’s job is all about fire control. The perfect smoke requires the right temperature.” If the fire is too hot it will impart heavy, even burnt flavors into the meat. If the fire is not hot enough, the flavors become bitter. The pit gets fired up as early as 5 some mornings. Besides chicken, pork butt, ribs, and such, the Kendall’s have added pulled pork and Jeremy’s pride and joy; beef brisket. He’s been perfecting it for the past two years and it’s now one of the top sellers. Made with a simple salt and pepper rub, the meat is hard smoked from 6 hours then finished another 12 to 15 hour s cooking slow and low. You might just f ight over the crispy bits.
Before returning to Southwest Florida in 2016, Jeremy had been experimenting, with pit cooking. He beams, “What better way to work than to work your hobby. If you enjoy it, it’s never a bad time. Sure there are bumps and bruises but you get over it when you open that pit and smell that wood.” Jeremy’s grilling tips; “Fire management is key for home cooks. BBQ is about patience. You have to be a patient person to achieve what you are going for. It’s easy to get anxious and want the meat to be done now. It will be pretty good but not what could be.” That’s the reason why people go to Hickory BBQ; the meat is perfect

“A horse is an intuitive animal and has the ability to work with humans in a very special way. When it comes to children with special needs, they often communicate and interact with the horse in a way that sometimes their parents have never seen before,” says Missy Saracino, Executive Director of Naples Therapeutic Riding Center or NTRC. When Tony and Kerry McClure moved to Naples about four years ago, they began looking for programs for Joe, their autistic teenage son, and NTRC consistently came up. After waiting six months for a spot to open, Kerry remembers, “I thought he would be scared, but then he got on that horse and had this huge smile.” She continues, “They really care about Joe and push him in a nice way, as www.NaplesTherapeuticRidingCenter.org

Today Kerry says, “He’s gotten so much stronger, his posture is much better and there has been a huge change in his confidence and independence.” Joe’s father, Tony, says, “Not only has NTRC helped tremendously with his core strength and balance, but it has also provided a sense of community for Joe and our family.” Kerry began volunteering with the non-profit when she moved to Naples saying, “I have a passion for horses but knew very little about the magic of therapeutic riding when I started volunteering with the organization a decade ago.” In Januar y, Tony became president of the NTRC board of directors saying, “We are in a major time of positive growth right now. There are so many opportunities to help the riders whose numbers continue to grow.” The riding center has 12 horses and recently added a new riding arena.
Children and adults with physical and mental challenges must get referrals from a physician to participate in the equestrian program. Riders only pay $10 to reserve their spot. Generous donors and grants cover the bulk of the costs associated with the program. The signature fundraiser is the Bootstrap Boogie Barn Dance on November 10th. Besides money, NTRC heavily depends on volunteers. Tony says, “Volunteers are the life blood of this organization. I can see it on their faces; it’s not a thankless job. These people are getting tremendous fulfillment out of what they are doing; engaging with magnificent animals and with children who are relying on them to provide a service they might not otherwise have.” Missy adds, “I feel lucky everyday to be able to come to work.
