Getting There

is half the fun

O

ne of the most famous destinations in Florida for history, culture and wild fun is Key West, but the drive this time of year can be treacherous. Avoid the congested two-lane roads and take the water route with the Key West Express. The high-speed catamarans get you to Key West in about 3 ½ hours. Kept in impeccable shape, the boat has an open-air deck, and two climate controlled options with comfy seats; some even recline. Passengers love the views of the open water and the occasional dolphins that join the journey, playing in the ferry’s

wake. The boat is also equipped with flat screen TV’s, and tables for dining, playing games, along with a galley and bar for snacks and adult beverages. Catch the Keys bound catamarans at 8:30am from Rose Marina on Marco Island. The return trips leave Key West at 5pm. Come back the same day, or stay for a few. Find the most up to date info on schedules, reservations and fares at KeyWestExpress.net. Enter promo code LL2017 for $5 off an adult fare.*

*Cruise departs from Rose Marina on Marco Island. Discount applies to Marco Island departures only. Valid off adult or senior full fares. Expires August 16, 2017.

WELCOME TO OUR MAY EDITION OF

T

Living l! Loca

his month we are very excited and honored to announce a new initiative; For A Greater Cause. We will be spotlighting and supporting a local non-profit that is making a difference in the lives of others. It is our intention to inspire our loyal readers to support the many deserving local charities working to make a impact in our community. In celebration of Memorial Day, we have chosen Operation Open Arms (OOA) as our initial For A Greater Cause recipient. I have known Capt. John Bunch, the founder of OOA, for over a decade. He works tirelessly to provide complimentary SW Florida vacations and post traumatic stress disorder care for service men & women returning from combat and foreign duty. All with $0 payroll! Please take a few minutes and read how OOA is touching the lives of service members and their families. Also, please plan to attend their annual fundraiser on May 27th (details inside).

One area business instrumental in giving back to our community is Jason's Deli of SW Florida. This month's cover feature focuses on co-owner Diana Willis and her passion & conviction as the Board Chair for the PACE Center for Girls. They may have six successful locations from Sarasota to Naples but their commitment to family, employees & their community is what makes their business special. If you have a inspiring story to tell about a local business or charity, we would like to hear from you. In the meantime, thank you for continuing to support our advertising partners & community. S

he’s a businesswoman, a philanthropist and a mom, with the type of welcoming spirit that makes everyone around her feel comfortable; Diana Willis, co-owner of Jason’s Deli of Southwest Florida.

Hers is a familiar face at charity and special events across Southwest Florida. The fashionable go-getter’s best accessory is her smile. Born in northern California, Willis grew up in Beaumont, Texas, the home of Jason’s Deli, and the place where she met Scott, her husband of 30 years. The couple had an investment interest in Jason’s when the company was first developing its franchise opportunity. Willis liked the idea because, “It was a privately run business. Not all chains are created equal. Jason’s was a family run business and that’s the way we are.” But at the time they decided to put their money in a more established brand, McDonald’s. Success followed for the Willis’, Jason’s grew and the couple was able to sell the business they built up in order to sink their teeth into their first franchise choice. At the time there was only one deli in Jacksonville and one under construction in Tampa, so Florida was a virtually untapped market. Willis remembers, “We decided to come down on vacation, stayed on Marco, started driving around and how do you not fall in love with this area.”

Diana & her son, Brandon

That was in 1999. Her two boys, Brandon and Mason, were in 7th and 5th grades and grew up in the business. Blending work and family felt seamless to the businesswoman as she says, “You’re in a business you love, with the people you love…our kids were always part of the fabric of what we do.”

As a company and as a couple, they give generously to numerous charities and local causes. The ones that focus on single mothers and children are especially dear to Willis’ heart. She doesn’t just volunteer, she is the Board Chair for the PACE Center for Girls, Lee County.

Both boys worked in the deli as teenagers; one was even fired. Can you imagine being the manager who was forced to terminate the owner’s son because he came in late one too many times?

She says with conviction, “PACE is my passion project 100%. Magic happens at that school for girls.” About her community involvement, she says, “I’m not in something just to say I’m in it. I want to make a difference and I have limited time. If I’m going to spend my About working with her husband, Willis time somewhere, I want it to have value.” says, “We have our own strengths in the business, they overlap some but Willis is also a big supporter of FGCU we bring different things to the table. athletics and the university’s hospitality When it comes down to it, we have a program saying, “From the beginning we great communication…mutual respect made a commitment to grow an educafor what we do and we play to each tional piece that would contribute to the others strengths that way.” future of the whole community.”

Her employees are like extended family and she gives them the chance to get into the action by sponsoring a Habitat for Humanity home. She says, “It’s something the whole team can be a part of, community service.”

When not working on the business or in the community, Willis loves to travel and is a wine enthusiast. When her sons left home, she converted one of their bedrooms into a wine cellar, complete with temperature and humidity controls.

Although Willis’ title is that of “co-owner,” she likes the designation of Chief Motivational Officer explaining, “I’m just a cheerleader for what we do. If someone is having a bad day I lend a perspective to hopefully make them feel better.”

December marks the 16th anniversary of the first Jason’s Deli, on Cypress Lake Drive in Fort Myers. The business has since grown to six locations from Naples to Sarasota. While there are no current plans for more expansion, the possibility has not been ruled out.

Each week she shares with her team leadership wisdoms, inspirational daily bread messages and wellness information. So who motivates the motivator? Willis says, “My people, my family, my friends, my community. I’m motivated to see other people’s success.”

About Willis’ success in Southwest Florida she says, “We believe in investing in people that’s our secret ingredient, that’s the key ingredient.”

dros. It's been that way for the last 13 years.

A native of Utica, New York, Gini and her husband Tony moved to Florida in 2004 to be closer to their family. “When we moved here, my three children, Scott, Brett, and Jenny were already living here in Southwest Florida and starting their own families,” Gini said. “I didn't think twice to moving here as I didn't want to be a parttime grandma and not be able to see them grow up.” Gini recalls how her oldest son, Scott, had a dream of owning his own company by the age of 30. He turned that dream into Air Advantage Heating & Cooling, Inc. and eventually offered his mom a position. “I was so excited and proud that Scott was accomplishing his dream, and when he asked me to come work for the company I accepted as an employee first and a mom second,” Gini said. Gini points out that Air Advantage is a family run business on both sides of the two owners, and that everyone takes pride in making the company great. “Determination, dedication, loyalty, respect, and integrity is the foundation that Air Advantage was built on and will continue on through the generations,” Gini proudly states. “With that being said, as a proud mom, employee, and a friend to all who work here I can only say how important 'family' is and how great the rewards are that come with supporting each other.”

Park Family & Cosmetic Dentistry

By Gina Birch

F E AT U R I N G

Dr. Samanta Andisco Dr. Samanta Andisco has been practicing dentistry throughout Southwest Florida for a decade, but now that she’s landed at Park Family Dentistry she feels like she’s found a home. Dr. Andisco says, “It’s wonderful here.” Growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Andisco’s dentist was the inspiration for her to go into the field. She remembers, “I wanted to be just like her.” When the budding doctor was 14 years old, her family moved to Fort Myers. While taking science classes, the Fort Myers High School graduate always picked the ones that would prepare her for dental school and her career. She says, “I was so lucky to know what I wanted to do from an early age.” A volleyball player, she attended the University of Central Florida on a scholarship. It was there that she met her future husband, a tennis player who was also from Fort Myers.

neighborhood but was a year older and went to Bishop Verot High School so their paths never crossed. Giggling she says, “It worked out and it was awesome. I’m very lucky in that way too, not just in my career.” When Dr. Andisco talks about dentistry she lights up, is almost giddy about her profession and helping people with their smiles and oral health. She says, “I’m obsessed with teeth.” Practicing general dentistry, the restorative work is her favorite. The doctor explains, “The products in dentistry have gotten so much better. We (Park Family) have the most high-tech products, more than any place that I’ve ever worked, both the functional and aesthetic components.”

She recalls, “The athletes had to report earlier. We had a mutual friend who introduced us and we started dating.” Turns out her new boyfriend actually lived in her

It’s not just the technology and the family atmosphere at Park Family Dentistry that fill her bucket, but also the families who sit in her chair, from the kids to their parents and their grandparents. Dr. Andisco says, “I enjoy getting to know the

people behind the patients, they all have a story.” Seeing such a broad range of people is a welcomed challenge for Dr. Andisco who laughs, “The kids are like moving targets, you have to be fast.” The doctor’s kids are now ages six and nine, and her daughter is already following in her footsteps,

CONCERNED BY CHANGES ON YO It Could Be Your Veins

W

e have all seen someone walking down the street, noticed large bulging varicose veins, and known they have venous disease. Though varicose veins are prominent spider veins are the most obvious sign of venous disease, the medical condition they represent, venous insufficiency, is much more than just varicose veins. Venous insufficiency can manifest as a variety of signs or symptoms, including some which are dermatologic in nature, such as non-healing biopsy sites or thickened and discolored leg skin, and may not immediately come to mind when thinking about vein disease.

achy, heavy or tired legs at the end of the day are the most common symptoms of venous insufficiency. Patients with venous insufficiency can also suffer from disrupted sleep due to restless legs syndrome, night time leg cramps, or excessive urination. The most common dermatologic manifestation of venous hypertension is the appearance of new veins or clusters of veins especially on the lower legs and feet. This can lead to the feet and lower legs developing a purplish discoloration, especially when standing.

Venous insufficiency is a very common and underdiagnosed condition affecting millions of Americans. It is estimated to be present in as much as 40% of the population and becomes more prevalent after age 50. Heredity is a major risk factor, as are a history of blood clots or DVT, obesity, standing or sedentary occupation, female gender and prior pregnancies though the condition afflicts many men as well. Venous insufficiency is a condition that develops over time as the valves in the veins that keep blood flowing back to the heart in the legs fail. This leads to pooling of blood in the legs which causes increased pressure in the venous system, which is normally a low pressure system. This venous hypertension in the leg veins throughout the day leads to the signs and symptoms associated with venous insufficiency. Most people are aware of the most common sign of venous insufficiency which is varicose veins, but many people without varicose veins also have the condition. Legs swelling as well as livinglocalfl.com | MAY/JUNE 2017

Examples of legs with skin changes due to venous insufficiency

Skin changes and discoloration become more pronounced and severe as venous disease progresses. As the pressure builds in the veins throughout the day, fluid leaks out of the veins causing edema or swelling. In severe cases blistering or weeping skin can

develop making the patient susceptible to infections or cellulitis. Over time this leads to inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissues in the lower leg and a condition known as stasis dermatitis. Stasis dermatitis can initially manifest as dry, flaky, itchy skin or venous eczema. The continued leak of fluid and blood cells out of the veins leads to a brownish discoloration or staining of the skin and ultimately thickened leathery skin that can encircle the lower leg. Stasis dermatitis is a clinical diagnosis made by inspection of the skin and does not require a biopsy. Biopsy or any minor trauma to the area can lead to wound or ulcer development that can be very difficult to heal. Stasis dermatitis does not respond to steroids or other creams. Treating the underlying venous condition is the only way to halt the progression of the disease. Modern vein evaluation and intervention is much different than it was years ago. Prior to 2000, procedures such as vein stripping were very invasive, required general anesthesia, and had unacceptably high complication rates. For this reason, most patients with venous insufficiency were forced to suffer as there were no effective treatment options available other than compression hose and leg elevation. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. At Vein Specialists in Fort Myers and Bonita Springs/Naples, we offer comprehensive, modern vein evaluation and care. Dr. Joseph Magnant and I are board certified surgeons focused 100%

on the management of venous disease. We start by taking a detailed history and physical exam and then offer detailed ultrasound evaluations in our office by our onsite team of highly trained ultrasonographers. We are then able to formulate a specific treatment plan tailored to each patient. Often the best treatment option for patients with venous insufficiency is something called endovenous ablation or vein closure (permanently closing the vein with heat). Closing poorly functioning veins decreases the venous pressure in the leg and significantly improves symptoms. This procedure is minimally invasive and offered under local anesthesia in both our office locations with minimal discomfort. If you or a loved one is concerned by skin changes occurring on your lower legs or if you are experiencing any of the other symptoms associated with venous insufficiency, please consider visiting our website at weknowveins.com for more information. Dr. Magnant and I see patients along with our two highly trained nurse practitioners in both our Fort Myers and Bonita Springs/Naples locations daily so call for an appointment today.

BEST s ’ y a d Lis Rei HOME SERVICES

IS HONORED TO RECOGNIZE

14 Years of Dedicated Service

Best Home Services, Southwest Florida’s leading home service company providing exceptional air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing ser vices to residents from Naples to Bradenton for the last 37 years, is pleased to recognize Lisa Reidy’s 14 years of committed service. Lisa started in January 2003; when there were only 13 Best employees. Today, Best Home Services employs over 150 team members and we got a chance to link up with Lisa to hear what makes Best such a great place to work. When we walked around the sleek and modern offices of Best Home Servicesheadquar tered in N aples Florida,

Cary, Jennifer, Lisa & Kristina

we found a unique culture of happy, focused, and dedicated employees. It was apparent that one team member stood above the rest, Lisa Reidy. Lisa is currently the Accounts Receivable Coordinator; but has worn many hats in her 14 years of service. Back in 2003, when Best Home Ser vices was only offering f ive-star electrical ser vices, Lisa handled the phones, dispatched, pulled permits, scheduled jobs, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. “Very simply, Lisa is a wonderful prototype of an employee that every employer would be lucky to have. She is loyal, trustworthy, and treats everyone with the upmost respect and Dignity”, said Joel Molnar, CFO of Best Home Services. Lisa exemplifies the Best Home Service’s Core Values: Be Family. Be Amazing. Be Fun. Be Constantly Learning & Growing. As we were spending time with Lisa, she was gladly sharing her many years of knowledge and wisdom with a new employee and had one goal in mind-to lead them to success. “She’s become a sister to me (holding back a tear). I look forward to sharing our home and work stories each week. She continues to remain humble and learn more each day. She generously trains and teaches her fellow team members every chance she gets”, explained Monica Romberg, Payroll Manager of Best Home Services.

ELECTRICAL

PLUMBING

When we asked Lisa to describe Best Home Ser vices with one word she immediately responded, “awesome”. She went on to explain why she enjoys working for Best Home Services more than any other company she has worked for in the past. “Best has a great group of people I get to work with each day-I just love it here”. We asked for her input on getting through the challenges that went along with the tremendous growth she has been a part of over the last 14 years. She responded with a chuckle and states, “I have learned a lot and constantly growing myself. We still joke about when my book will get published, because it will be a ‘best’ seller”! Originally from Rhode Island, Lisa relocated to Southwest Florida with her husband Steve and her son Stevie in 1991. “Our family has been blessed to have Lisa on this journey with us these last 14 years, she is a true asset to our operation” stated Chadd Hodges, Co-

Owner of Best Home Ser vices. Lisa Reidy has been happily married to her husband Steve for 35 years, and a proud grandmother of 2 granddaughters, Casadee & Kaedence. When Lisa is not at the office she enjoys camping and being outdoors. Her happy place is sitting near a campfire surrounded by friends and family. Best Home Services is a local, family owned and operated company that is focused on caring for their customers and the community. Their team relentlessly works to continuously improve their ser vice in order to make Southwest Florida homes safer, more comfortable, and more efficient-one job at a time! Iris Sissler and her husband Bruce started their retail business 25 years ago back in Long Island, New York, they pledged to her customers that they would always offer excellent service with the best prices in their industry. That continued philosophy has separated Inside Out Furniture Direct from the competition, allowing them the

opportunity in creating the most amazing outdoor living spaces for their loyal customers. “Inside Out Furniture Direct is way above the competition!” Iris proudly states. “Everyone who comes here has my personal cell phone and can contact me at any time, seven days a week. We carefully price our furniture so we are always below our competition and will even visit our customer’s home if they have an issue. We take pride in our reputation offering the lowest prices with the best possible service.” Iris understands that it takes a great team effort to make things run smoothly and to uphold the values that her business had been built on. “My office manager, Jennifer, is second to none and always makes sure that our customers are satisfied and that everything is in proper

They always make sure that nothing leaves our warehouse without inspection and are always available to help our customers.” Iris said that when they first started out all those years ago back in New York customers would come from miles away just to find great deals and one-of-a-kind pieces. Their focus back then was on reselling goods, antique reproductions, and refinishing furniture. Today, with their Naples showroom and on-line buying opportunities, Iris has her sights set even higher. “Our goal is to grow both locally here in Southwest Florida as well as nationally,” Iris states. “We are working to expand our commercial furniture sales and hope to do

Operation Open Arms

This month is the kickoff for Living Local’s new initiative, For a Greater Cause. Not only will we introduce you to one of the many deserving local charities, but also make a monetary donation on behalf of our advertising partners to its mission, hoping to in turn inspire you to give back.

Since we celebrate Memorial Day is this month, it seemed fitting to name Operation Open Arms (OOA) as our inaugural For a Greater Cause recipient. The Army Specialist non-profit Tiana Ruano organization provides complimentary Southwest Florida vacations and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder care for service men and woman returning from combat and foreign duty. livinglocalfl.com | MAY/JUNE 2017

By Gina Birch The organization was founded in 2005 when Army Specialist Travis Downes asked Captain John “Giddy Up” Bunch where to fish before returning for his second deployment in Iraq. Instead of giving Specialist Downes directions, the fishing captain volunteered to take him. Eleven years later Bunch was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Award for his tireless work supporting the troops, the third highest public service honor the U.S. Army gives to civilians. Army Specialist Tiana Ruano is one of the more than 3400 troops OOA has assisted through the generosity of local businesses. Upon her recent return from Kuwait Ruano spent a weekend at Silver Sands Hotel and dined at Matanzas on the Bay. She says, “Being able to stay at beach all weekend was a much needed reset of me.”

Captain John “Giddy Up”

She gushes, “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words how grateful I am for what he (Capt. Bunch) does and the people and businesses like him. We need stuff like that, it’s hard on us and a perk like this is a like a weight off of our shoulders.”

Corporal Thomas Joseph Jardas

Over the years OOA has also had the joy of helping service members get married along with the heartache of planning memorial services for those who died too soon; including 20-year old USMC Corporal Thomas Joseph Jardas. The Cypress Lake High School graduate was killed in a helicopter crash off the coast of Hawaii last year. Jardas’ father Tim says as soon as news broke that his son was

missing, Capt. Bunch was at his door. He says choking back tears, “When this stuff happens it’s overwhelming and to have someone locally that knows who to call and talk to…I would’ve been lost.” OOA helped secure accommodations for the family members who flew in at a moments notice, provided food, arranged bag pipes, a helicopter fly over and other moving details for the young soldiers memorial service. The grieving father says Capt. Bunch has been like a brother to him; sharing his heartache, and like a father sharing his wisdom. The support kept and continues to keep Jardas grounded. He credits OOA, Bunch and his faith in God for getting him through his darkest days. Support Operation Open Arms May 27th, from 11am-10pm at Matanzas on the Bay located on Fort Myers Beach. They will be hosting the Fourth Annual Bluegrass, Brew and BBQ, hoping to break last year’s fund raising record of $7,000. To learn more about Operation Open Arms or to make a donation, please visit OperationOpenArms.com or call Capt. John Bunch at 239.822.8888. livinglocalfl.com | MAY/JUNE 2017

T

he wine world is a lot like the world of fashion; certain grapes and methods of winemaking go in and out of style all of the time. But two things that are always “in” for spring are whites and blushes; they come out of their winter slumber, fresh and vibrant. If you want to be the first in your circle to try something new for spring, these three Italian selections have just been introduced to the Southwest Florida market; Ileana Pinot Grigio, Vermentino Salento and Wanted Zin Blush. If you’re style conscious as well as health conscious, Ileana is a top choice to stock your cellar, not just for spring but all summer long—it’s low carb. Lower in calories than traditional white wines, you can engage in guilt free sipping all afternoon. The pinot grigio used in this one comes from Northern Italy in region of Trentino Alto Adige. The cooler climate and process used during fermentation are part of the equation that helps to keep the residual sugar low and cut the calories in this wine. It’s a straw color, smells like citrus and honeysuckle, and tastes like melon and pears with a citrus finish. The acidity of this wine makes it good for sipping or serving with food, seafood especially. Masseria Borgo del Trulli’s Vermentino

Salento comes from Southern Puglia. Wines made from vermentino are typically acidic and refreshing and this one doesn’t disappoint. It smells like a delightful mixture of peach, lemon and mango with a touch of herbs. Don’t be afraid to try a pink wine with the word “zin” on the label. The Wanted Zin Blush 2016, may be pink but it’s far from the sweet cloying white zins you may be familiar with. This one is made from old vine primitivo (zinfandel grapes) grown in northern Puglia. It’s an elegant pink color, like a lovely bouquet of peonies. Its nose is just as lovely; strawberry, watermelon and a bit floral like orange blossom. Fresh, crisp and citrusy, it’s a wine perfectly suited for Southwest Florida. Because these three Italians are brand new to the area, you may have to ask your favorite restaurant or retailer to carry them for you. Unfiltered Unfined Wines is a local company; our corporate office and wine warehouse are in Fort Myers so your request should be easy to fill. We take great pride in finding quality small production wines from all over the world and getting them into your hands. Cheers!

Jane Uttley is the owner of Unfiltered Unfined Wines, a wine importer & distributor, with offices & warehouses located in Fort Myers, Florida. She was born in London, England, grew up in Sydney, Australia and moved to the United States 20 years ago. Of those 20 years, 12 years have been in Southwest Florida. Jane is proud to be an American Citizen.
