“You’ll never feel like just a number” –Dr. Katrine Farag She uses the latest technology including digital X-rays; they are more comfortable for the patient and minimize radiation dosages. One of the most exciting offerings is the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, or LANAP. Used to treat gum disease, LANAP relies on a laser to target the diseased tissue in the periodontal pocket without harming the healthy tissues. The wound is easier to close and heals faster. Dr. Farag says, “We get such great results with it. It sets us apart.” Technology aside, the patient is her main focus. The dentist says, “We believe patient involvement and education is of utmost importance. In some offices, you feel you’re only a spectator, or that there is only one option. In ours, we take the time to explain all of your options and the benefits of each.” Patients can then make an informed decision with confidence.

The care at Advanced Dentistry is not only informative but also personal. Everyday she passed a dental clinic where she consistently saw a man behind a desk with a typewriter rather than a computer. One day she stopped to say hello and remembers, “It turned out to be Dr. Jacob Freedland, one of the very first endodontists in the entire country. This man was a legend!”

About Dr.Farag Born in London, Dr. Farag grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina—she still says ya’ll. At the age of 15 she interned with two female dentists and knew dentistry would be her career path. She completed her undergraduate studies in neuroscience at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. In 2005, she met her future husband who opened a dental practice in Port Charlotte and received her DMD in 2008 from Nova Southeastern College of Dentistry in Davie, FL. They became friends and he allowed her to shadow a mobile dental unit traveling to nursing homes. Dr. Farag says, “That is where my passion for geriatric care developed. I learned at a very young age what it means to develop personal connections with people and the depth of friendship that can develop from a stranger. I never work on a ‘stranger.’” Dr. Farag doesn’t want going to the dentist to be dreaded or seem like a chore. She says, “We respect your time. Our goal is to provide you with a beautiful, healthy smile and the most stress-free experience possible.” And for those patients who do come in grudgingly, she says, “I make sure they are smiling when they leave.”

“I’m allergic to dentists,” laughs Patsy Capps. But the Sanibel resident actually looks forward to traveling over the causeway for treatment by Dr. Farag. “She (Dr. Farag) was so genuine and that is hard to find these days,” gushes Patsy. After fixing a crown, Patsy remembers, “Her professionalism is top shelf all of the time and for the first time in my life I came away from a dental procedure with a good feeling when it was over.”

Debi Grover had gum disease and was afraid to get conventional, painful gum surgery until she learned about LANAP and Dr. Farag. Debi’s recovery was fast, virtually pain free, and she says, “I’m actually seeing bone regrowth where it had previously receded from the disease.” She had such a great experience with Dr. Farag that Debi underwent invisalign treatment and teeth whitening. When Preparing for Knee Replacement Surgery

One of the most common medical diagnoses associated with advancing age is osteoarthritis, also known as OA. This disease occurs over time due to years of “wear and tear” on our joints. Although OA can damage any joint in the body, the knee is among the top locations affected in the majority of the population. For example, consider a 60-yearold woman who has been working the majority of their lives on their feet. Over time, they begin to have a gradual worsening knee pain and stiffness. After several weeks or months of over the counter medications, home remedies, or ice and heat, they present to an orthopedic clinic for further evaluation. The orthopedist then performs testing and imaging, which often includes x-rays, and diagnoses the patient with OA in the knee joint. Over time, after conservative therapies have been exhausted, a mutual decision between the physician and patient has been made to proceed with knee replacement surgery. What now? You’ve just been told you will need a knee replacement and you are looking for answers as to how you may achieve the best possible surgical outcome with the least amount

of complications. Vein Specialists has been working with a number of Orthopedic Surgeons to optimize their patients’ vascular status prior to joint replacement, including total knee replacement. Patients over the age of 50 often have both orthopedic disease and venous disease. We have coined the term “orthovenous” disease for this group of patients. What is venous insufficiency? Everyone has arteries, which pump the blood away from the heart. Veins bring the blood back to the heart. Leg veins have numerous one-way valves within them that carry blood back to the heart. Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves within the veins no longer open and close properly, which leads to the leaking of blood backwards toward the feet. This leaking of blood results in increased venous pressure in the lower part of the legs, due to the force of gravity. This may lead to signs and symptoms of vein disease such as bulging varicose veins, spider veins, swelling, leg cramps, restless legs, increased urination throughout the night, heaviness, achiness, and even skin discoloration or ulceration. These signs and symptoms may occur in one or both legs and may not necessarily be accompanied by pain.

Refractive Cataract Surgery Success at

Some 24.5 million Americans have cataracts, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Roland Martin was one of them. The renowned professional sport fisherman and television host coincidentally noticed changes in his vision when he started having trouble seeing the fish. “Fishing involves quick decisions that need to be made in an instant, and it’s so important to have perfectly accurate vision at all distances,” says Roland. Roland met Dr. Michael J. Collins, founder of Collins Vision, on an off-shore fishing trip several years ago and they bonded over their shared passion for salt water fly-fishing. Hip Replacementt A Shorter Road to Recovery

bout three years ago, Bob Zekanoski began experiencing pain in his hip that would not go away. A supervisor for Lee County Parks and Rec, Zekanoski led an active lifestyle both in and out of work, enjoying biking, swimming, and lifting weights. Then somet hing changed . H e remembers, “I had a hard time putting on my socks. I didn’t have the same flexibility I was used to.” But that wasn’t all. He adds, “I didn’t really enjoy walking anymore. It was painful. I hated to walk even 50 yards.” Seeking medical help, his first course of treatment involved physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications. The medication helped for a time, but when the pain persisted Zekanoski says, “It was bad. I can tolerate a lot of pain. I’ve passed 27 kidney stones in my life, so when I say I’m in pain I’m not kidding.” When it became clear that he was running out of options, Zekanoski began researching the inevitable, hip surgery. He had just been promoted to his super-

visory roll and was concerned about being out of work for several months while he recovered from conventional surgery. That ’s w hen he discovered SuperPATH® hip replacement. After doing more digging, he learned there was a physician in the area that was proficient in this unique surgical technique and had great success with it, Dr. Peter Ameglio. Although SuperPATH was originally introduced in 2003, not many doctors implement it. In fact, Dr. Ameglio is only 1 of 6 surgeons trained in the State of Florida and is the only surgeon in Southwest Florida per forming SuperPATH. Its key lies in not dislocating the hip joint during surgery. In traditional hip replacements a dislocation of the hip is required. This results in injury to the joint capsule and small muscle attachments of the hip. Following the surgery with traditional approaches, the patient is instructed in hip precautions to prevent joint dislocation. The

SuperPATH approach doesn’t use these precautions because the joint is never dislocated. In addition, the capsule and muscles are not injured during surgery making for a quicker recovery. D r. A m e g lio ex p lain s , “ I n t hi s approach, since you don’t have to dislocate the hip joint, it’s less traumatic.” The surgery is easier on the patient and the recovery time is shortened significantly. “A co-worker of mine had a traditional hip replacement surgery and she was out for three months,” says Zekanoski. “She visited me in the hospital and could not believe what I was doing in physical therapy immediately following surgery. She said ‘I could not do any of this.’” A speedy recovery was not only important to Zekanoski because of returning to work, but also because he did not have the help he would need for an extended period of rehabilitation and recovery at home.

After an overnight stay at the hospital he went home. His son stayed with him for a few days to make sure he was OK, and then Zekanoski was able to complete the recovery on his own. The parks and rec supervisor did his physical therapy religiously, only using his walker for nine days. Two weeks after his surgery he was able to ride his stationary bicycle again. He says, “My progression after having major surgery was just amazing.” About the SuperPATH approach to hip surger y, Dr. Ameglio says, “SuperPATH approach reduces the risk of hip dislocation, decreases post-operative pain, and shortens the patient’s recovery time.” Zekanoski says, “I give the entire experience five stars. This is not a gimmick--it WORKS. Dr. Ameglio is a great doctor and I hope he stays around for when I get older.”

NETS NEARLY FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION

t might be summer and thoughts of the next school year far away, however, if you are a parent of a high school student now is the time to plan for your child’s college education. The evening news has been punctuated as of late with stories of scandal, cheating, fraud and bribery in exchange for guaranteed admission into some of the nations most popular and respected colleges and universities. The fields are competitive and spaces limited, making it increasingly difficult to get into some schools. Getting admission is step one; step two is paying the sometimes-exorbitant fees required. Parents often plan for those fees by enrolling in savings plans including the Florida Pre-Paid Program, designed to help Florida families save money by locking in the future cost of attending the state’s public institutions.

However, some families struggle to contribute to pre-paid plans while others can’t afford it at all. Parents–don’t throw in the towel just yet. Take heart in the fact that if your child does a little preparation, the money might just be there, in the form of a Bright Futures Scholarship. Bright Futures helps Florida students pay for college and vocational schools in the state. There is a list of requirements that include things such as ACT/ SAT scores, GPA and service hours. Liv ing Local publisher Audrey Ameglio got a late start in the Florida Pre-Paid Program saying, “I didn’t begin contributing until Timothy was in middle school. I knew I should have started earlier. It was definitely a financial stretch starting so late, but knew it was worth securing the opportunity for a college education, realizing he still had to do his part to gain admission.”

When Timothy entered high school, ACT and SAT testing were mentioned, but she thought the scores only mattered when it came to college admission. She didn’t realize that high scores could also help pay for his education until she heard about Bright Futures. Timothy was a good student with a high GPA yet like many, he struggled with standardized tests. The results from his first ACT were not good so his mother sought help from a tutor recommended by school officials. After several sessions and another poor test re s u l t , T i m o t h y w a s completely discouraged. Audrey now knew that performing well on this test would not only gain him admission to college but could help secure much needed money to pay for it as well. So she dug a little deeper and found Cammie McKenzie and her team of tutors at Learning in Motion Private Tutoring. It took some convincing, but Timothy agreed to give tutoring another try, this time with success. He achieved the required composite ACT score and through Bright Futures, nearly all of his educational costs are covered. In addition, his mother did not lose the money invested in the college pre-paid fund. “It was such a blessing to receive a refund check in the mail for Timothy’s tuition.” Audrey is very proud of her son’s determination. She believes his commitment, along with the tutoring he received from Cammie and her team is what made it possible for Timothy to raise his test scores and secure a scholarship. “When I first

spoke with Cammie, I could feel the love, passion and energy she had for helping students reach their goals,” says Audrey. “She was able to connect with Timothy at a difficult time when he was disappointed in his scores, encouraged him and provided him with the skills and tools he needed to succeed!” Watching a child graduate from high school is a proud moment for parents. Unfortunately for many, it can also be filled with anxiety and fear with the thought of college debt looming. That financial fear may keep some parents and students from even considering higher education and trade schools. Even for parents who’ve invested in the Florida Prepaid College Plan, supplemental funds may still be needed and they are not aware of the financial assistance that is available in the form of scholarships, free money for education. To get financial assistance, parents and students need to start preparations EARLY - in their junior year of high school. Statistics show those who do, have a much better chance of achieving the Bright Futures score requirements, and tutoring is an excellent way to start. Even when a student’s first test score is low like Tim’s was, time and practice can make a significant difference!
