ow can it already be time to go back to school?

While some people had the summer off, the volunteers from Blessings in a Backpack have been busy bees. For the first time ever, the non-profit extended its mission of feeding low-income children during the regular school year, to include summer school. — Audrey & her son Timothy

This grassroots program is growing into a national organization, thanks in part to the success in Southwest Florida and the efforts of our local founder, Scott Fischer. I can’t think of better charity to feature in livinglocal for the back to school season. Another organization that supports education and empowers young ladies is gearing up for its signature summer fund raising event—Love That Dress!, benefiting PACE Center for Girls in Lee and Collier Counties. livinglocal has been a media partner of this soirée for years. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary, a majority of the gently loved, donated dresses will be sold for only $10. Please check inside this month’s issue for the details of this feel-good shopping party. It’s one that you don’t want to miss!!! ART DIRECTOR

Teddy Tedford Teddy brings a wealth of branding, marketing and creative experience to livinglocal®. Throughout his design career he has worked with local SW Florida businesses and luxury brands across the state.

Gracing our cover this month is Florice Hodges, Public Relations Director for Best Home Services. A philosophical cornerstone of livinglocal is giving back. I love that Best Home Services also carries this same philosophy. They have embraced the fact that as local business owners we have a responsibility to make our community better. And they do just that! Inside we get a behind the scenes look at the part of “service” that applies to more than just fixing the problems in your home. Find out what the word “service” truly means to this family owned business. Thank you to our business partners and to you, our readers, for living local,

Audrey

Recipe of the Month Parrot Key

Our mission at livinglocal includes spotlighting local non-profits that are making a difference in our community. In addition to sharing their story, we also provide a monetary donation on behalf of our advertisers. This month we feature Blessings in a Backpack, a local non-profit organization committed to feeding hungry school children. This organization sends children home from school with a backpack full of nutritionally balanced food - enough to feed them through the weekend. It is estimated that 60,000 children in Lee and Collier County qualify for help, and for the first time in its nine-year history, they made the decision to extend the program throughout the summer. Learn about how Blessings in a Backpack is fighting hunger and how you can join in their mission! S u b s c r i b e t o l i v i n g l o c a l a t www.LivingLocalFL.com

Servicing

“Be amazing, be fun, be family, be growing and learning.

livinglocalfl.com | AUGUST 2018

Homes And the Community by Gina Birch

B

est Home Services has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1980 when it was founded as a small family owned electrical company. As the company has grown, so has its commitment to community and giving back. Florice Hodges is in charge of Best Home Services’ public relations and community involvement. Although married to Co-Owner Keegan Hodges, she had her own career in the air conditioning field, working with Tampa Bay Trane for nearly 20 years before joining the family business. As a territory manager she says, “I was a bit burned out. It was time for a change.” The Hodges brothers knew there was a need for someone to coordinate the company’s sizeable communi t y invol vement so t hey created a position for her. Florice is the mother of all networkers. She is involved in numerous professional associations, mostly

involving realtors, where she helps to facilitate even more charity events, and along with giving back to the community, as a representative of Best Home Services. The company believes strongly in service and not just to their paying clients. Best Home and their employees regularly support organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Liberty Youth Ranch, Midwest Food Bank, and Laces of Love among others. It might seem logical that a company specializing in AC, electric, and plumbing participate in building homes for Habitat, however, it’s not just the trained service men and women who donate their time and efforts. Florice says, “Each department picks a Saturday to work and it’s almost like a competition. It’s great team building and a great way to give back. We have so much talent in our company and have so much fun doing it.” She laughs, “I never knew how to Continued on next page

install windows--I do now.” Best Home Services just wrapped up a shoe drive in which 400 pair were donated to Laces of Love. “I was extremely touched by their story,” says Florice. “When families are poor, getting shoes for their kids is the last thing they think about.” Not only did employees donate brand new shoes with a company match, staffers wrote personal notes and attached them to each pair. Florice says, “Helping kids is near and dear to our hearts. I have raised kids and most of the staff have kids.” In fact, her son Derek played a big role in the shoe drive. He works part time at Best Home’s call center while attending college. Besides being a family owned company, Florice says, “We consider every one of our staff family too. I’m

always excited to talk about them. They are professional, knowledgeable, and are great representatives of our core values.” One of those core values is to treat others, specifically customers, the way you want to be treated. Then there are these four cornerstones: “Be Amazing,” “Be Fun,” “Be Family,” and “Be Growing and Learning.” These phrases are printed on colorful bracelets and a new one given to employees each quarter. When a member of the staff does something that exemplifies the words on the bracelet, they are recognized company wide. Florice explains, “Most of our staff work in the field, so this is not just good motivation, it’s fun too. Everyone wants to get a bracelet to see what color it is for that quarter.” Great pride is taken in customer service, according to Florice, who says

About

Best Home Services Perry Hodges founded Best Home. A U.S. Navy veteran who served in Vietnam, he became an electrician while stationed on a Destroyer ship in Pearl Harbor. After leaving the service he became one of the youngest electrical contractors in his home state of California. In 1992 he and wife Marilyn, moved with their two sons to begin a new life in Florida. Buying a small electrical company, they soon added a construction element and expanded service throughout Southwest Florida. for instance, “The call center is open 7 days a week. We work hard to make sure everyone is taken care of same day or next.” When asked what it is like working with her husband after having an independent career for so long, Florice laughs, “I barely see him.” The couple takes time to work out together early in the morning and reserve weekends for family, pool time, and church. Best Home puts their best foot forward in both serving customers as well as the community. “You don’t have to give with money, it can be with labor and love,” Florice says passionately. “If I could encourage everyone to think about where they can make a difference and help, give back, this would be such a great world to live in.”

Sons Keegan and Chad began working in the family business when they were 12-years-old but it wasn’t until they returned from college that they officially joined the company. Besides providing superior electrical service, the young men thought it made perfect sense to add air conditioning repair, replacement, and installation to the list of services; something needed year round in Southwest Florida. With the expansion came a name change: Best Electric & Air. Plumbing was added to the list of services a few years later leading to the current branding of Best Home Services. Now employing more than 200 people, Best Home Services has offices in Naples, Fort Myers, and Sarasota, with a Tampa branch in the works. livinglocalfl.com | AUGUST 2018

HITTING BACK PAIN Dr. Peter Ameglio, M.D.

P

inpointing where your lower back and hip pain is coming from can be quite a puzzle. If the pieces don’t line up, no matter what procedure you undergo, including surgery, you could likely still be hurting. Solving the mystery is something that has become a mission of Dr. Peter Ameglio at Gardner Orthopedics. Dr. Ameglio is the primary hip surgeon for the respected practice and says, “When you have done all you can to treat the hip and you’ve reached the point of surgery, you want to make sure the procedure you are offering will actually resolve the pain.” While that might seem logical, some people with seemingly successful hip replacement surgeries still experience pain, and Dr. Ameglio has resolved to find out why. livinglocalfl.com | AUGUST 2018

He discovered that the cause of pain in many patients was from sacroiliitis or inflammation the sacroiliac joint (SI). It’s located where the lower spine and pelvis connect. Sacroiliitis is typically a condition treated by spinal surgeons rather than joint surgeons, such as Dr. Ameglio. It’s a diagnosis that can fall between the cracks. Dr. Ameglio explains, “The SI joint can mimic symptoms of an arthritic hip. I have seen patients who’ve had a hip replacement but still have symptoms of hip arthritis, even though the joint has been replaced.” If a patient has hip and low back pain, and x-rays show arthritis, Dr. Ameglio will first inject the hip joint. If the patient is still in pain, he looks for other possible sources. That is how he landed on the SI joint.

@moreoptionslessrisk

@gardnerortho239

Below The Belt

By Gina Birch

“15-30% of people with low back pain have sacroiliitis,” says the surgeon. “It’s sizeable and it is critical to understand because of the overlap in symptoms.” If you are having low back and hip pain and only have a little bit of arthritis, despite what you may have been told, surgery might not be the answer. Dr. Ameglio explains, “If the patient still has a great range of motion, but they are just in pain, they are a good candidate for an SI issue.” The sacroiliac joint functions as a shock absorber, supporting the entire spine. It dissipates the shock to the sacrum and pelvis; however, as we get older it is less able to absorb shocks. It becomes stiff and less mobile. Problems with the SI joint often result in pain in the pelvis, around the sacrum or lower back, buttocks, groin, lateral thigh, leg, and foot. Some patients have referred pain in other areas, making an SI diagnosis even more difficult. Patients who have had back fusion but still have pain below the belt, could have an issue with the SI joint. SI could also be the culprit if you’ve had a hip replacement and your groin still hurts; your hip may not have been the problem after all. Dr. Ameglio says, “It’s not common but it happens.” Joints in the hips and back directly affect each other and can cause overlapping symptoms. For instance if your hip is stiff, it puts strain on your low back and vice versa. Surgery is not always the answer to joint pain. Dr. Ameglio and the entire team at Gardner Orthopedics view it as a last resort and in fact, have quite an arsenal of treatments to help keep you out of the operating room.

If you are having back pain below the belt, if you’ve had a hip replacement and are still in pain, if you’ve been told you have arthritis and need a hip replacement but still have great mobility, find the real source of your pain and treat it with the help of Dr. Ameglio and Gardner Orthopedics.

About Dr. Ameglio Born in Washington DC, Dr. Peter Ameglio grew up in Panama. After returning to the states, he completed his undergrad at the University of New Hampshire, and studied pre-med in Maryland where he worked at Johns Hopkins. Graduating from medical school at Albert Einstein in New York, he had successful practices in New Hampshire and Maine before relocating to Southwest Florida to be closer to family, including a twin sister in Miami. Initially specializing in foot and ankle treatments, Dr. Ameglio moved up the leg to knees and hips. He calls it, “a natural progression to look at the entire lower extremity and how things function as a unit.” He estimates performing some 200 joint surgeries a year.

“When we enhance someone’s smile it alters their facial expressions”

says Dr. Robert Bracho, co-owner of Smile Dental of Bonita Springs. The practice name is an acronym for “Simplified Minimally Invasive Lasting Esthetics.” In dentistry, even the most minor cosmetic changes can improve a person’s appearance and boost their confidence, including teeth whitening. That’s just one of the reasons Dr. Bracho went into medicine. He explains, “Watching my mother impact lives on a daily basis as a teacher, really resonated with me.” With a passion for math and science, Dr. Bracho knew a career in dentistry would help him combine his academic interests with his core values for helping people. Dr. Bracho says, “Whitening is popular for patients from teens to those in their 80’s. It’s the least invasive way to alter their appearance.” And at Smile Dental, he uses a high-tech process called GLO Science to rid teeth of stains and restore pearly whites. “The big thing is, that there is very little, to absolutely no teeth and gum sensitivity associated with this system,” says Dr. Bracho. What makes this technology so different is the use of heat and light.

Gel is put into a custom mouthpiece that glows with light and heat to activate the whitening process. A professional grade hydrogen peroxide is incorporated to protect gums and cheeks. Patients initially receive 2-4, eight-minute treatments at Smile Dental. Then they take home a device for touch ups. Dr. Bracho explains, “Everyone’s teeth will get stained over time with different diet styles. By leaving your whitening appointment with your own GLO device, you have control over maintenance and can do it at your own pace.” This unique method of whitening is simple and streamlined. Smile Dental is glowing about GLO Science because it works well and keeps patients happy. If you’re interested in whitening your smile without the unpleasant side effects of tooth and gum sensitivity, call Smile Dental and ask about GLO Science. This one hour in office whitening will immediately brighten up our smile!

“After Years T

he swelling and achiness in her legs started long before Lynn retired from her career in business development 11 years ago. Aside from gardening, Lynn’s hobbies, including reading and staying active with crafts, kept her sitting for long periods and she noticed her legs were always exhausted by the end of the day.

“I felt like I was carting around concrete blocks because my legs and my ankles would swell,” Lynn recalled. She also experienced cramping, fatigue and trouble sleeping at night. She reported that she did not have any visible varicose veins, so it did not occur to her that it might be a venous thing. She had other health issues so she kept thinking her symptoms were related to some of her other health issues. After doing some research on the various causes of her symptoms, Lynn scheduled an appointment to have her venous system evaluated. She underwent venous insufficiency ultrasound examination, and then sat down with her vein specialist to discuss the ultrasound findings and treatment options.

Joseph G. Magnant MD, FACS, RPVI Vascular Surgeon & Vein Expert

After 15 years, Lynn finally learned that a very real and potentially serious vein disease was the cause of her swollen and achy legs. More importantly, she learned that she didn’t have to live with it. Veins are blood vessels that are specially designed to pump blood back toward the heart, against the force of

with symptoms of vein disease, Lynn learned the truth and discovered a minimally invasive treatment to cure her symptoms!” gravity. Inside the veins are a series of one-way valves that open and close with the rhythm of muscle contractions. Healthy valves close tightly, keeping blood moving upward toward the heart. With vein disease or venous insufficiency, the valves do not close properly. This allows blood to flow backward down the legs and pool in the veins. The pooled blood can lead to bothersome symptoms such as swollen, achy legs or leg cramping, and other signs of progressive venous disease such as varicose veins, and skin changes that can lead to bleeding veins and leg ulcers. These complications, Dr. Magnant emphasizes, are signals that vein disease is present. Symptoms and signs of venous disease are numerous. Varicose and spider veins are the most common indicator of vein disease. They are the easiest to diagnose. But in the absence of spider or varicose veins and in the presence of other symptoms such as heaviness, achiness, nighttime leg cramps and nighttime urination, a physician should consider the possibility of underlying venous disease. If you have varicose veins, you most likely have venous insufficiency, but someone can have venous insufficiency without presenting varicose veins.

The investigation of venous disease with ultrasound is accurate and noninvasive that it makes sense to be proactive rather than waiting for the disease to progress or for the complications of the disease to develop. Patients are simply unaware that a disease process is causing their symptoms and, further, that the disease can be treated. More often, patients tend to accept the way their legs feel and attribute the achiness, cramps, swelling, etc. to the normal result of aging, heredity or being on their feet all day. For Lynn, the turning point was learning that the feelings she was experiencing were not normal and came from a treatable disease. She encourages others to examine their own situations and seek help if they recognize themselves in the symptoms. “Do not overlook the fact that your ankles are swelling or your legs are swollen and you have dull, aching pain or cramping at night or interrupted sleep,” she suggests. “Do not push that off and say, It’s always been like that or I’ve always had that uncomfortable feeling.”

WE HAVE THE

Perfect Style for You!

One of the first things you notice when you meet a person is their eyes. Luscious lashes make those eyes look bigger, more intriguing. But even the best mascara can only do so much to augment short, thin, lackluster lashes. That’s where eyelash extensions come in. They have become one of the hottest beauty trends in the country. Not only do extensions enhance your appearance and boost confidence, they also shave precious minutes off of your morning beauty routine. But not all lashes are created equally and there are a number of things to take into considerations when choosing ones that are right for you. Your eyes frame your face, so it’s important to pick a style to compliment that unique frame. For instance, you can choose eyelashes that are either longer on the ends or in the middle. Their shape will help define the look you are going for,

be it natural or glamorous, like that of a runway model. Lash thickness is also an important consideration. Thicker lashes can provide a fuller look, but they also weigh more and aren’t the best choice for everyone. Another way to achieve that lush look is through Volume Lashes. Volume Lashes are comprised of several thin, lightweight strands that are bound together at the base. They are placed on a single lash to achieve a fluffy, denser lash line. These also come in different lengths based on the look you want to achieve--natural or dramatic. Amazing Lash Studio offers four distinct lash styles: “Cute”, “Sexy”, “Gorgeous”, and “Natural”. Volume Lashes come in both Classic 3D and Glam 6D options, and in a variety of lengths. With so many to choose from, you’re sure to find a style that fits and looks fabulous.

V

S Y To GOODBYE Dry Eyes by Gina Birch

D

o your eyes burn, itch, or water excessi vel y? You may be suffering from dry eye. This is a condition that is more than just irritating; it can damage the eye if left untreated according to Dr. Nicole E. Alessi of Collins Vision. “Dry eyes are a really big deal in Southwest Florida,” says the Florida native. She was born in Fort Lauderdale and was initially inspired to help people with their vision after watching her grandmother slowly loose hers. But she’s extremely passionate about helping people with dr y eye because it’s a problem Dr. Alessi lived with for years. “I don’t want my patients to suffer like I was suffering.” Her vision changed while she was attending optometry school at Nova Southeastern University. The doctor

says gratefully, “I was definitely in the right place when I had a problem. I was able to work with exceptional people and it stemmed my passion.” Dry eye is a chronic disease process. “Not addressing it will slowly deteriorate the surface of the eye,” explains Dr. Alessi. “The top layer of the cornea will become irregular and distort the quality of vision.” It occurs when there is a problem with the tear film, a multi layer structure that protects your eyes. To help maintain the integrity of your tears, small glands secrete an oily substance. Those gland s c an b e come obstructed and in need of expression so they can work properly. But that is just one cause. There is a not a one size fits all treatment for dry eye. Dr. Alessi does a comprehensive analysis that includes looking at a patient’s lifestyle and when

the symptoms tend to occur. She says, “The solution could be as easy as redirecting the vents in your car. If you are waking up with irritation it might be due to dust mites, so you would just need a humidifier.” Small mites, or an overgrowth of bacteria, can also live along the lash line. In this case BlephEx is a common treatment, a procedure that could be described as an exfoliation of the eyelids and lashes using a micro-sponge. Patients with this see an improvement in symptoms almost immediately. Allergies are another dry eye culprit. At Collins Vision Dr. Alessi is able to do a surface test on the forearm of a patient, exposing them to environmental allergens that specifically affect the eyes. Anti-inflammatory drops are often used to protect the surface of the eye so the doctor can then turn her attention to healing the tear film. If you have cataracts or an interest in laser vision correction and have dry eye, treating the dry eye should be done prior to surgery. She explains, “We don’t want to do vision correcting procedures on an eye that is fluctuating.” Dry eye can be exacerbated or induced by Lasik surgery, but can also be managed after the fact. Dr. Alessi says, “If you have dry eye, Lasik may not be the best way to go. Here we do Advance Surface Ablation or ASA, and that will reduce the amount of dryness dramatically.” “I had ASA with Dr. Collins,” says Alessi. She wants to encourage and help people who are having discomfort due to dry eye. “If you’ve been suffering for five years, I’m not going to be able to fix in five days, we have to do some work together but my goal is that you’re not uncomfortable, spending time thinking about your eyes all day.” If you or someone you know is looking to find relief from dry eye, call Collins Vision today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Alessi.

239.936.4706

About Dr. Alessi Dr. Alessi received her Doctorate of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University where she completed her residency in Low Vision and Geriatrics. Since then, she has completed extensive training and study in treating dry eye and was instrumental in establishing the Collins Vision Dry Eye Clinic. When not helping patients see better, she enjoys outdoor water sports and has two dogs that she describes as “my great joy.” She also loves to travel, most recently she visited the Netherlands in Belgium.

FEEDING

KI D S’ BODIES MINDS

F

By Gina Birch

or the first time in its nine-year Southwest Florida history, Blessings in a Backpack has extended its program to feed low-income school children through the summer. While many people reading this story are coming back from or planning family staycations and vacations, a large percentage of local families aren’t trying to figure out which hotel gives them the best deal or location, they’re wondering where their next meal is coming from. It’s a sad truth. There are children in our community who are hungry. During the school year, low-income students have access to free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Those meals are too often the only ones they receive. So what happens on the weekend?

Cecilia St. Arnold, Executive Director livinglocalfl.com | AUGUST 2018

That is where Blessings in a Backpack fills in the gap by sending students home with a backpack containing enough nutritional food to keep them fed through the weekend. Cecilia St. Arnold, Executive Director of Blessings, says the figures are staggering, “Florida is number four in the nation in childhood hunger even though this is an agricultural state.” Blessings in a Backpack started as a grassroots effort in Louisville where Scott Fischer and a group of his friends signed up for a golf tournament. Owner of Scott Fisher Enterprises, which includes Six Bends Harley Davidson, Fisher went for the fun, not realizing this fledgling charity was one of the beneficiaries. The idea struck a cord, especially after discovering that 90% of students in title one schools in Lee County were on free and reduced lunches. He says, “I went to my buddies and said let’s put some money in and start the program.” The work done in Southwest Florida has been instrumental in helping Blessings in a Backpack form a national organization. As the program grew locally, it was evident that a fulltime administrator was needed, so Fischer brought in St. Arnold. She didn’t know the hunger problem in local schools was so vast until her daughter became a teacher. Her first job was at Fort Myers Middle School where she kept a mini–frig full of healthful snacks to give students who were so hungry, they’d fall asleep in class.

“For A Greater Cause” is a monthly initiative of livinglocal, spotlighting a local nonprofit that is making a difference in our community. livinglocal also makes a monetary donation to the nonprofit on behalf of its advertising partners. Scott Fischer, Founder

Besides sleeping in class, hungry kids are often late for school on Monday, and there’s a high absentee rate on Friday. Since implementing Blessings, school administrators report those numbers have improved dramatically. Some students are actually excited to be at school on Friday because they know they’ll be leaving with more than homework. Every student at Tice Elementary is on free and reduced lunch according to Assistant Principal Arlene Kane. Every one of them gets their own backpack of food on Friday. “It makes a huge difference for parents. It’s one less thing they have to worry about, and kids aren’t coming to school on Monday starving because the last substantial meal they ate was lunch on Friday.” Kane sees students returning on Monday better behaved, focused, and able to concentrate on learning. “Think about how you are at work when you are starving; your focus, your attitude. How much better do you work when your belly is full?” she asks. It’s the same for kids who are also still growing physically. Continuing, the assistant principal says, “We are really thankful for Blessings as this is first year we’ve been able to run the program over the summer. Summer school only goes Monday through Thursday, so until now, students were

potentially going without food Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.” When people ask Fischer why he invests so much time, effort, and money into Blessings he says, “It’s easy to say lets help hungry kids, but the reality is all of these kids are potentially our employees. As an entrepreneur, I have an obligation to support education and make sure children are taken care of.” 60,000 children in Lee and Collier Counties qualify for help according to St. Arnold, but this year Blessings will only reach about 4,000; the need is tremendous. It doesn’t take much to help. Fischer says, “We know not everyone can spend thousands, but it only takes $100 to feed a kid all year. $100! We need $100 donors.” If you can be that next $100 donor, or even help fill the backpacks, call (239) 410-9592 or visit their website at BlessingsInSWFL.org.
