h is last month has been a test of endurance for many, brought on by Hurricane Irma. Mother Nature has a way of humbling us, reminding us who is boss and Irma certainly did that. Many local businesses were damaged and those that weren’t lost days, even weeks of business due to lack of power, internet or employees who could not make it in. Now, more than ever, is a time for us to come together and patronize local restaurants, retailers and service providers. I was moved in the days and weeks following the storm, by all of the out of state license plates on bucket trucks, helping restore our power. And now, as I still see so many out of state plates, my gratitude continues. However, as we try to rebuild and repair damages from the hurricane I encourage us all to seek out local businesses and local contractors, first. Switching gears, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I’ll be joining thousands of you who are going pink. In this issue of Living Local we introduce you to 4 Words Foundation, a local non-profit organization that helps residents pay for the diagnostic services that can detect breast and other cancers early. reat business ideas are most often rooted in seeing and meeting a need. That’s how Premier MD Care was formed. There are essentially two parts to this business and they work together hand in hand: a medical spa overseen by Dr. Ivan Cvik and a concierge medical service operated by his wife, Dr. Jelin Israel-Cvik. The doctors met while doing residency for internal medicine in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Jelin laughs, “He started off as my boss but that has since switched around.” After tying the knot nearly 20 years ago, the couple stayed in Ohio to practice medicine, but like many from the Midwest, often visited Southwest Florida on vacation. In 2003, Dr. Jelin says, “We were tired of grey skies and long winters. We
wanted a quiet life and a good community for the kids.” So they packed their bags and moved to Southwest Florida where Dr. Ivan opened an internal medicine practice and Dr. Jelin found a job in a more corporate healthcare setting. As the years went by, Dr. Ivan became more and more interested in hormone therapy saying, “I was seeing a lot of people not feeling well despite everything we were doing. And for my female patients, there were no good options after menopause.” He also saw a growing interest in patients wanting to lose weight in a healthful, medically supervised setting. Dr. Ivan studied internal medicine because, “As a physician I can help the whole person. I can take care of a wide variety of conditions.” And with the aging population of Southwest Florida, weight and hormones can be key to overall health--so his focus began to shift. No synthetic hormones are used in his practice, as they tend to have unpleasant side effects. At Premier MD Care, they use bioidentical hormones obtained from natural sources (yams & soy) that closely mimic the hormones your body makes. As her husband was transitioning his practice, Dr. Jelin was becoming disheartened with the direction traditional medicine was taking. She says, “Medicine was becoming an assembly line. The personal touch was gone and patients were frustrated; I was too.” It was her time to make a change and as it happened, there was room in her
husband’s office, so she took a leap of faith and established a concierge medical practice. Dr. Jelin limits the number of patients in her practice to ensure that she will have the time to provide exceptional care to the members of her practice. Concierge patients pay a modest monthly fee for enhanced services. Subscribing to this kind of medical care gives patients things they generally lack in other doctors’ office, such as personal care, face time with a professional who is not watching the clock, and direct access to a doctor, even after hours. here are many different presentations of leg vein problems although the most recognizable is that of varicose veins. Other signs and symptoms of venous reflux disease (also known as venous insufficiency, CVI, venous incompetence or leaky veins) include swollen, achy legs, restless legs, night time leg cramps and urination, varicose veins, skin discoloration in the lower legs, and bleeding or ulcerations in the legs. Venous insufficiency is defined as failure of the valves in the veins to close tightly resulting in the backward flow of blood back down toward the feet. The end result is increased pressure in the veins in the lower legs and feet which causes water and protein to leak out into the surrounding tissues.
Over the past decade, our anatomic and physiologic understanding of venous insufficiency has been greatly improved as endovenous ablation (sealing of the veins) has been applied to patients with more obscure signs and advanced stages of venous insufficiency with excellent results. Superficial veins other than the great saphenous vein, such as the small saphenous vein, intersaphenous vein, anterior accessory saphenous vein and perforating veins are now

treatable with endovenous ablation. Modern ultrasound evaluation of the lower extremity venous system by experienced vascular sonographers can accurately identify which veins are insufficient or leaking as well as the severity of the leak. Ultrasound directed sealing of the abnormal veins under local anesthesia has yielded far superior results than vein ligation or stripping, which are no longer required nor should ever be considered. With the introduction of minimally invasive treatments for venous insufficiency in 2000, and the increased acceptance and application of this technology of sealing rather than stripping of the saphenous veins there is no need for patients to suffer from their symptoms related to venous disease any longer. Patients likely to have venous insufficiency are those who have a family history of varicose veins, swollen legs or other signs of vein disease. Other risk factors for developing venous insufficiency are a history of pregnancy, obesity, sedentary occupations, advanced age, female gender and history of deep vein thrombosis or DVT. Patients may have varicose veins or other signs such as skin discoloration, brawny and thickened skin, diffuse spider veins in

the lower leg and ankle regions, open or non-healing ulcerations or wounds, history of bleeding from veins, or swelling in the legs that is worse at the end of the day and improved with elevation. s lawmakers in Tallahassee hammer out the final details on how medical marijuana is dispensed in Florida, one local doctor has already integrated the herb into his practice. Dr. Gregory Sonn, founder of Iona Health and Wellness, has been able to prescribe a non-euphoric strain of cannabis since it became legal in 2014. here are many reasons why people choose a dentist, and while that decision is an important one, dentists don’t run the show all by themselves. On their front line are the hygienists.
Park Family Dentistry has a team of four hygienists, led by Heather Boe. Soon to celebrate her five-year anniversary with the practice, Boe is one of those rare Florida natives, and an even rarer Naples native. She was first introduced to the idea of dentistry as a career while in high

school; she worked as an assistant in one of the first orthodontist’s office in town. She recalls, “I was fortunate…I got to do a lot and thought I like this. I like the patients and working in mouths.” O r iginall y set t ing her sight s on becoming a dentist she laughs, “I didn’t want to go to school another ten years. This only took 3, and 22 years later I still love it.” About putting her hands in mouths all day Boe laughs, “You have to be a little strange to do what we do, but you develop these relationships with

patients and become part of their lives.” She continues, “When they are happy and satisfied, that is satisfying to me, I like to make a positive impact in their lives.” Boe moved back to Naples after graduating from Tallahassee Community College and was working for another practice when a friend phoned, asking if the hygienist knew of anyone looking for a job—Park Family was hiring. She says, “I wasn’t looking but when God opens a door you should at least look through it. It was fate.” The Naples native remembers her interview with Park Family, saying, “Dr. Huynh-Le asked ‘if things worked out and you want to be here what can we do to make you stay?’ I said make it a positive atmosphere. She used her finger as check mark and said ‘done,’ and it has been. I have not been disappointed.“
But when back in the of f ice, she welcomes the camaraderie, likes the fact that the dental practice is charity minded and that the focus is “to provide compressive care for our patients so they can be as healthy as they can be, with lifestyle choices and treatments.”
When she’s not in the super clean work environment, she likes to be outdoors, and doesn’t mind getting dirty by going four wheeling and target shooting.
She concludes, “We are here to serve, to take care of other people, and I believe that what you put out there eventually comes back to you.” n

ith seasonal guests and residents gone, and the holidays just around the corner, now is the time to make the upgrades to your home that you’ve been talking about. Something as simple as new drapes or blinds can completely transform a room according to Kelly Panczyszyn, owner of Estero Blinds. A Fort Myers native, Panczyszyn has been in the window treatment business for more than ten years. She and her husband Steve own Statewide Window Treatments, a wholesale business that services builders and designers in Southwest Florida. But after a while Panczyszyn was looking for more creativity and contact with customers. She explains, “I wanted to do retail so that’s were Estero Blind came from. I branched off from him.” Now she has a more personal relationship with clients saying, “It’s much more hands on than working with a designer or builder. I like to see the end result and know that it was because of my input.”
The creative type, Panczyszyn used to make bedspreads for her children. Then she began making them for her clients. Estero Blinds does more than install shades and blinds, they take care of any upholstery needed to give your room that extra touch. Panczyszyn doesn’t do the sewing by herself anymore; today she has a team of talented upholsters working in house. Her extra time is spent with her five children including two sets of twins, the youngest of whom are four years old. It’s not just the upholstery but all of the work by this local business is done in house, no sub contracting. This practice sets the company apart according to Panczyszyn who says, “There is no chain of command, no calling bunch of people, if there is a problem we take care of it. We do it all from start to finish…that’s important to us.”
The input is one on one from the very beginning with Panczyszyn going into client’s homes, looking at their space, listening to their ideas and desires, and then turning them into something tangible.
The only thing she may call on colleagues for help with is finding new furniture to accent her designs or client request. Panczyszyn says, “We have a lot of resources in the area to get products. It’s a nice community and we can all stay in the loop once we know what we’re working with.”
She says, “Some people know exactly what they want while others don’t even know what is available or what things cost.” In that case Panczyszyn often invites clients into her office to look through fabrics, colors, materials and designs.
What keeps Panczyszyn going every day? She says, “Seeing how people get so excited (about the home improvements.) It’s a big deal going from ordinary to extraordinary and it’s great seeing how happy they are in the end.” n

hen Marie Springsteen was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2012, her therapy was writing. Her musings and journaling led to the publication of a book entitled 4 Words, and eventually the formation of a charity by the same name.

The 4 Words Foundation Inc. provides financial assistance for all types of cancer screenings, non-surgical diagnostic tests and biopsies for both men and women in Southwest Florida. The idea for the charity came during one of her radiation treatments. Springsteen remembers, “I saw a young girl who was going through both radiation and chemotherapy. She had a lump and let it go three years. I had no lump. Mine was caught in regular screenings.” It was an eye opener for Springsteen. thinks about her, wondering what happened to her. There are many reasons why people don’t get potentially lifesaving preventive health screenings, but Springsteen doesn’t want money to be one of them. Money was indeed a consideration for Leslie Krenzelak. She made an appointment for her annual mammogram in December of 2014. As the date approached she remembers thinking, “What am I doing? It’s the holidays; my money would better served on presents. I wanted to postpone it.” Her mammogram was self-pay; it was the first time in Krenzelak’s adult life that she had no health insurance. She says, “God is amazing right? The day I was ready to call and reschedule, my phone rang and it was Radiology Regional saying that twelve women were being given a grant for their mammogram.”
