his year, Thanksgiving took on a whole new meaning for many Southwest Floridians, thanks to Hurricane Irma. As Christmas and 2018 quickly approach, many of us are still cleaning up, dealing with repairs, and getting back on our collective feet. Considering the forecast of what could’ve been, my gratitude is surely one of higher proportions this season. Longtime readers have no doubt noticed the changes that livinglocal™ has implemented this year. One major addition has been more content featuring our local business partners and their stories. Every person and every business has a story; and we love sharing them with you! I’m always looking for ways to improve our magazine and provide our advertisers & readers with even more value; that is exactly how our new chef/recipe feature has come about. I met a reader while dining at a local restaurant who loved the publication but wished there was a recipe every month… she and her neighbors love to cook. It’s something I had been toying with for some time and this month it becomes a reality. Special thanks to
Gina
Bob Boye, the chef/owner of Cru, for sharing one of his favorite holiday dishes with us. This month we go behind the scenes of one Southwest Florida’s oldest and most beloved tourist attractions—the Shell Factory. It was great to personally meet the Cronin’s and Pam was gracious enough to provide me with a personal tour. I loved walking thru and reminiscing of my visits as a little girl. Although some of the original footprint remains, the Cronin’s have improved and added upon it. People travel from all over the world to visit this attraction – every Southwest Floridian needs to visit, too! As we enter the holiday season, please remember to give back. The majority of us take the simple things in life for granted – like food. Unfortunately, many individuals in our own backyard wouldn’t have a hot meal on their table if it wasn’t for organizations like the Harry Chapin Food Bank. See inside how you can make someone’s holiday a little brighter through a monetary gift or volunteering in our “For A Greater Cause” feature. As always, thank you for livinglocal,

esides the beaches, the Shell Factory is the most visited tourist attraction in Southwest Florida according to owner Tom Cronin. In operation for 79 years, the Shell Factory has seen its share of ups and downs—thankfully things are on the ‘up’ for the operation that houses a nature park, restaurant, fun park and at 68-thousand square feet, the largest single retail space in Southwest Florida.
Cronin and wife Pam purchased the bankrupt, rundown North Fort Myers site 20 years ago. After years of developing dozens of big projects from Punta Gorda to Naples, Tom’s original thought was to improve and flip this historic property. That is, until Tom puts it, “I got a soft spot in my heart. I did something you never do as a developer—fall in love with a project.”

“We are the only facility in the world with four free museums inside of it.” —Tom Cronin | Owner
Both Tom and Pam had sentimental ties to the tourist attraction. He went to grade school with the daughter of the original owner when the Shell Factory was located in Bonita Springs. When Pam moved to Florida as a child, she lived a couple streets away from the current location in North Fort Myers. She even completed her high school biology project on shells she found there. She remembers, “Neither one of us had a lot of experience in retail and we had over 50,000 square feet to fill at the time. The nature park was flat, we used to have volley ball tournaments on it.” Today, the Nature Park is home to more than 400 critters. Pam is particularly fond of the lemurs, while Tom jokes, “Pam is my favorite animal in the park.” On a more serious note, he continues, “One of our advantages over bigger zoos is we let kids touch the animals. We have a petting zoo and the kids love to touch and feed them. It’s one of the biggest draws we have.”
Currently, Tom is working on installing two large screen tv’s with a constant link to the Eagle Cam on Dick Pritchett’s property which has had over 120 million viewers and is located just two miles from the Shell Factory. Tom is particularly proud of the small museums the Shell Factory houses saying, “We are the only facility in the world with four free museums inside of it.” There are special exhibits from the Veterans Museum in Cape Coral and a growing Florida Fossil display. Pam says, “We don’t hunt but we have a lot of taxidermy, we call the Natural History Display.” Tom informed us that it is the large display in the country. Then of course there are the shells, the stars of the attraction. Boasting the largest collection of shells in the world, you’ll be amazed at the bins of treasures from the sea, the artwork and jewelry made from them and the most amazing coral. Pam’s favorite, “This bottle that coral grew around and its like tentacles wrapped around. It’s really cool.”

The Cronin’s have always invested in the community, giving back countless hours and dollars. When the Lee County School Board cut its budget years ago, the Cronin’s raised money to pay for environmental education and field trips so local students could continue learning at the Shell Factory. Some 50,000 visits have been funded. Tom has certainly made a mark in Southwest Florida. As President of the Fort Myers Community Hospital (now Gulf Coast Medical Center), he brought the first MRI equipment to the area and paved the way for the first open heart surgery. That being said he says his time at the Shell Factory has been the “most fun.” One of the things the Cronin’s love most about the Shell Factory is that it is always changing, for instance, the recent rebranding of the restaurant to Capt’n Fishbone’s Seafood and Southern Favorites. The menu has been streamlined and Sonny Pham is taking over. With over 40 years of restaurant experience, Pham is a former South
Vietnamese Army Officer who fought alongside US troops and has quite a history of service. The year round Christmas shop has been expanded to 7,000 square feet in time for the holidays. Pam says, “When things at the restaurant get stressful, I walk through there.” It’s bursting with ornaments and decorations from all over the world. Pam calls Tom a “visionary,” with a brain that is constantly coming up with new ideas, taking suggestions that seem impossible and making them a reality, like the park’s zip line. The couple is committed to making the Shell Factory a destination where everyone feels comfortable and has something to do; kids, adults and pets. At 78 year s old, Tom says, “ I’ve developed over 200 million dollars worth of property in Lee and Collier Counties and this is my last hoorah…I’ve loved every minute of it.“

Josh McEachin’s MULTIPLE YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE
Best Home Services, Southwest Florida’s leading home service company
providing exceptional air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing services to residents from Naples to Bradenton for the last 38 years, is pleased to recognize Josh McEachin’s multiple years of dedicated service. Josh started as an HVAC Install Technician with Best in February of 2012. Today, Best Home Services employs over double the number of HVAC install professionals as it did in 2012. We had the opportunity to connect with Josh to hear why Best is truly, the best. When we caught up with Josh, he was getting ready to head to his first install of the day; a family whose AC unit had gone out the day before. While Southwest Florida’s weather has gotten a little more bearable, it is still hot, humid, and uncomfortable in a home with no air conditioning. Josh cares about every single family he visits and takes pride in his work to ensure that the systems are installed safely and correctly. HVAC install technicians like Josh are the behind-the-scenes

powerhouses in the HVAC industry ensuring that every customer receives a proper, up-to-code installation of their new system to keep their family safe and comfortable. Josh is a per fec t example of the core values at Best Home Services: Be Family; Be Amazing; Be Fun; Be Constantly Growing and Learning. Josh is kind, caring, and knowledgeable in his field. We asked Josh to give us one word to define Best Home Services and he said “dedication”. He went on to explain that his coworkers are some of the most dedicated individuals he’s ever met. He states “the amount of effort they put into every job is amazing. It is a blessing to work with people who care as much about their craft as I do about mine”. Josh is originally from South Carolina. He moved to the Southwest Florida area in September of 2010. Josh is enjoying

his life here while doing what he loves. When we asked Josh about his hobbies and favorite pastimes, he chuckled. While he did admit that occasionally he likes to fish, he really expressed that he spends most of his time working, “that’s what happens when you really love your job, I guess”. Josh emulates the saying of “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Best Home Services is a local, family owned and operated company that is focused on caring for their customers and the community. Their team relentlessly works to continuously improve their service in order to make Southwest Florida homes safer, more comfortable, and more efficient-one job at a time! Don’t Replace It Restore It
T he new year is quickly approaching,
so what greater time to start sprucing up your home. Restoring the grout between your tile floors and showers can be a tough job that tends to be overlooked. If you’ve been neglecting those hard to clean areas, look no further than Nick Smith, owner of The Groutsmith. The Florida native grew up next to the founders of The Groutsmith franchise in Sarasota saying, “He’s like family.” Smith had an established career in the restaurant industry and was starting to look for a venture of his own. On his way to a food truck convention he called his old family friend and viola, found that new venture. Smith says, “In the restaurant business you wait for everyone to come to you. Now I get out and drive around on my own schedule. The way this product
works, my customers and I are blown away by the results every time.” No high-powered machines are used; the pressure can actually damage porous grout. The type of cleaning Smith does is all by hand. No big hoses are hauled through your front door and the cleaners are PH neutral which helps to preserve the grout sealers. Smith also has a patented product that is a bit like liquid cement, finding the grooves to reseal the tile to the ground. Besides cleaning, he can change the color of your grout, giving your flooring a fresh new look that often makes your space look more open. While Smith is approaching his second year of business, The Groutsmith has been around nearly 25 years restoring f loors for a fraction of the cost of replacing them.

Naples Mayor
BILL BARNETT We are Ready for Season,
Post Hurricane Irma. Sunday, September 10th, Hurricane Irma took direct aim at Southwest Florida, its eye rolling over Naples where it made landfall. The entire area spent weeks watching the storm grow to a monster, category 5+. Every little shift in its track made a potentially huge impact on what Southwest Florida would experience, as well as which community would see the worst effects. Naples Mayor Bill Barnett remembers, “At one point everybody thought it would hit the east coast, but we were still apprehensive. Probably Thursday night we knew it was going get us and we thought uh-oh.” M ayor Barnet t was faced w i t h the same question most residents had- - do we evacuate or stay? However, his decision was an official one; it would affect a good number of his 20,000 residents. Looking back, he says, “The Weather Channel was here and I remember being on the pier Thursday night, and the first thing they asked was about mandatory evacuations. I said not right now and I remember they said ‘really why not?’”
livinglocalfl.com | NOV/DEC 2017
At that point, state leaders were holding off on recommending mandatory evacuations, and Barnett was concerned about his residents getting on the road with kids, elders, pets, no hotels, no gas… he says, “It seemed like a worse situation than hunkering down or going to a shelter.” He wanted to spend t he night at City Hall when the storm hit but followed advice from his staff and instead checked into the Hilton with his wife, their rescue dogs and cats, a host of first responders and national media correspondents. When the eye hit, the storm began to fall apart, and he got the call that gave him a cautious sigh of relief… NO storm surge. There was widespread damage but nothing like what he and tens of thousands of others had been bracing for.
Without the anticipated storm surge, the mayor says, “The biggest issue was power. Once they started restoring, it was spotty… they did best they could.” By ten days out, most of the trendy 5th Avenue and 3rd Street South were open, although not at full steam. Thankfully, there were no deaths or serious injuries under the mayor’s watch. He says, “It was a very stressful time seeing a city powerless, the debris and trees down… where we were then to where we are now is incredible. The recovery has been amazing.”
Most of the debris has been picked up; in fact, the city is on its second round while other Southwest Florida communities haven’t even had a first go at removal. While there is still a lot of work to do with FEMA, Barnett says, “Businesses are open and we are going to have a busy and good season. The beaches look great, we have basically recovered.” Always looking for a silver lining during bad times, Barnett says he got to see the heart of his community... and it’s a big one.

Did Hurricane
a toll on your legs with swelling and pain? We may have your solution!
A
s Hurricane Irma was bearing down on us, we all had to quickly prepare and then make the difficult decision to stay or evacuate. For those who stayed, there were days of sitting and waiting for the storm to approach, and then watching as it inflicted it’s wrath, leaving many without power. Those who chose to evacuate faced long lines at the airport or bumper to bumper traffic for trips that took hours longer than usual. As things started to get back to normal and patients returned to the office, I have been struck by how many patients had new or worsening leg symptoms during and after the hurricane. For patients with venous disease, sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time is very difficult and can lead to significant pain and swelling. This was further worsened by the lack of air conditioning and the fact it was too hot to wear compression socks. The arduous travel and long periods of relative inactivity before and after the storm while trapped at home, in a car or in a hotel room was very difficult for patients who suffer from a medical condition known as venous insufficiency.
livinglocalfl.com | NOV/DEC 2017
Venous insufficiency is a condition where the valves in the venous system in the legs fail, leading impaired blood to return to the heart. Blood pools in the leg veins, especially when standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time as was required for so many during the storm. This leads to abnormally high pressure in the veins or venous hypertension which is the cause of the many symptoms of venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency is a very common and underdiagnosed condition affecting millions of Americans. Heredity is the major risk factor and the disease becomes more prevalent after age 50 affecting both men and women. Other risk factors include a history of blood clots or DVT, obesity, standing or sedentary occupation, female gender and prior pregnancies. Most people are aware of the most common sign of venous insufficiency which is varicose veins, but many people without varicose veins also have this condition. Legs swelling as well as achy, heavy or tired legs at the end of the day are frequently reported and in severe cases, the skin around the ankles can become discolored, thickened or even ulcerated.
Joseph G. Magnant, MD, FACS, RPVI Patrick A. Nero, MD, FACS, RPVI
Irma take As the pressure in the venous system builds throughout the day when patients are on their feet, symptoms progress and are often worse in the evening or bedtime. This is when lesser known symptoms such as restless legs, leg cramps and excessive urination become problematic and can affect sleep. A trial of compression hose best predicts if these symptoms will respond to venous interventions. At Vein Specialists, we offer comprehensive, modern vein evaluation and care. Dr. Joseph Magnant and I are board certified surgeons focused 100% on the management of venous disease. We start by performing a complete history and physical examination and then offer detailed ultrasound evaluations in our office allowing us to formulate the best treatment plan for each patient. Modern vein evaluation and intervention is much different than it was years ago when procedures such as vein stripping were invasive, required general anesthesia, and had unacceptably high complication rates. In many cases the best treatment option for patients with venous insufficiency today is something called endovenous ablation. This can be accomplished with either laser or radiofrequency catheters that allow us to heat and permanently seal the poorly functioning vein decreasing the venous pressure in the legs and significantly improving symptoms. This procedure is minimally invasive and offered under local anesthesia in
Dr. Patrick A. Nero Surgeon & Vein Expert
both our office locations with minimal discomfort. The newest treatment option for vein closure is Venaseal™, which closes the vein using a medical adhesive rather than heat, and offers the advantage of requiring fewer injections. We also perform removal of varicose veins through small incisions, called microphlebectomy, as well as injection sclerotherapy for bleeding or spider veins. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) for the investigation of patients’ pelvic or iliac veins is now available and may be appropriate for patients who have failed previous vein treatments or have had recurrent symptoms years later. If you or a loved one has varicose veins or any of the other signs or symptoms of venous insufficiency, please consider visiting our website at Weknowveins.com for more information. Though the power is back on and hopefully life is getting back to normal, now is the time to be evaluated if you experienced any problems with your legs during or after the hurricane. Dr. Magnant and I see patients along with our highly skilled nurse practitioners in both our Fort Myers and Bonita Springs/ Naples locations daily, so call for an appointment today. n

To most people, vision is the most important of the five senses. 80% of our brain’s activity comes from vision. Therefore, improving your vision will also improve your brain’s activity. Correcting vision and doing it with style is something the team at I-Topian Optical takes seriously.
from the IOS Retina Scanner is projected onto a computer screen so that both doctor and patient can precisely see photos of the retina. The imagery is then saved, so like many diagnostic tests, there is a baseline. This is extremely helpful in tracking changes in the eye.
The Southwest Florida business has long been known for quality and service when it comes to eyewear, but many people forget about the part that leads to the glasses…it all starts with an examination and it is anything but basic here.
Dr. Christine went on to explain, “Using complete retinal imaging is easier on the patient, more through and better for me to diagnose a problem or potential problem.” Since both Dr.’s Joe and Christine are optometric physicians, they can also treat conditions that could come up during your routine exam.
Dr.’s Joe and Christine Reyes perform the exams with state of the art equipment. The budding doctors met while attending high school in Southwest Florida. Upon graduating medical school they wanted to return home to work in their community. I-Topian uses cutting edge technology every day, including the IOS Retinal Scanner. Dr. Joe says, “The scanner allows me to examine the entire retina with full detail at once. Blasting it with light like traditional equipment will only let me see a small area at one time. If you have had the light blasting you know how uncomfortable it can be.” The image
One of the things that Dr. Reyes loves most about practicing at I-Topian is that the exams are never rushed and he gets to spend time with each patient. He says, “I have enough time to actually help improve someone’s lifestyle.” At I-Topian the doctors perform the entire exam themselves for the most accurate and thorough exam possible.

O CANALS Taking the Pain out of
R
OT By Gina Birch
The ‘family’ at Park Family
and Cosmetic Dentistry has grown a little bigger with the addition of a new Endodontist—Dr. Elena Kan. Dr. Kan is a root canal and pain management specialist. She says, “Some people wonder why you need a specialist for a root canal because some general dentists do them.” But root canals aren’t a one size fits all procedure. She has special equipment for high magnification that allows her to zoom inside of the tooth, to see its intricate structures. Dr. Kan explains, “It is so complex, inside of the tooth, and it is a huge advantage to treat the tooth correctly and without complications.”
The second part of the equation is knowing how to use that knowledge to correct the problem. The Endodontist grew up in Siberia, Russia. She immigrated to Nor th Carolina in 2003…for love. Friends from her hometown introduced her to her future husband, Michael, and the two began a transatlantic relationship. The doctor was not looking to leave her homeland, she was established professionally, but love has a funny way of changing the course of life. In Russia, Dr. Kan says, “Dentistry was more like a branch of medicine, where you either did extractions or fillings; just two procedures and no anesthesia.”

A visit to the dentist filled people with great fear and she says, “I was no exception. I was terrorized by dentists as a child.”
“I like helping people in p ain who need treatment right away to get out of pain.”
Then she met a dental student who was kind, compassionate and walked the future doctor through the process, calming her fear. Dr. Kan remembers, “She helped me emotionally and I thought if she helped me, someone who had so much fear, I could do the same.” At 15 years old, she was inspired to study dentistry and battle the stigma of pain that is sometimes associated with the profession. One of the reasons the Endodontist was attracted to Park Family was the level of technology offered and the philosophy of serving the patient. She explains, “During the interview I realized they truly care about every single patient, and they are treated as family.” Another thing that impressed her was the commitment the dental practice has to giving back. Dr. Kan explains, “I used to do a lot of charity work in North Carolina and really like the aspect of giving back.”

BUYING SOUTHWEST Treasures New England Collector
W
hen you gather with family for the holidays and talk about old times, you might also discuss grandma’s antiques, wondering what kind of value they hold besides sentimental.
That’s where Tony Costantino comes in, a well-respected antique collector/dealer in Southwest Florida. His antique career began in Vermont. In 1971 he and wife Bonnie moved there to start a ski business, however, it didn’t snow that year. Forced to sell almost everything they owned, they put an ad in the paper for two wood stoves in the ski lodge. The oil embargo had kicked in and people were looking for cheap heating alternatives. Costantino says, “We sold over 3000 antique wood stoves.” That began their foray into the antiques business. While they live part time in Naples, their expansive store is in the quaint town of Clarendon Springs, Vermont, in a former hotel that dates back to the 1830’s. While in Southwest Florida, they buy things residents are ready to part with. Others call on the Costantino’s when they want to get a
By Gina Birch second opinion on a price already quoted to them. He says, “Everyone likes to get top dollar.” However, today’s top dollar is significantly different than when he first got in the business. The reason, he says, “Older people had fun collecting things but younger people don’t seem to have the same interest.” Items that are still holding their value, according to Costantino, include Civil War items, jewelry, paintings, and oriental rugs. If you are looking for something in particular, the couple may be able to help you find it, however, Costantino advises, “You gotta buy today because you really love it, not for an investment.” The Antiques business may not be as lucrat ive as it was when Cos tant ino began, but he says he still likes hearing p e o p l e’s s t o r i e s a n d , “ w h e n I s e e someone get excited. I know they really love this thing and it makes me happy. I’ve meet so many people who are really a pleasure to do business with, especially in Naples.”

Reigns Supreme at Charlie Chiang’s
The name Charlie Chiang has a ring. You might expect him to be a movie star or a Chinese hero of some kind when in fact he is a former chemist and one of the owners of the eponymous restaurant in North Naples--along with his alluring wife, Christiana. The face of the restaurant, she is an artist at heart, saying, “One of my uncles was a well-known Chinese painter who had been my role model since childhood.” Her artistic skills are evident in her restaurant’s décor and her stylish dress. It also comes through in the kitchen, as she says, “Dish creation and presentation is an art.” The Chiang’s opened their first restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia in 1974 with dozens more to follow in the DC area. Christiana says, “I grew up enjoying my father’s gourmet cooking. Unlike most traditional Chinese men at his age who never stepped inside a kitchen, he is passionate about cooking for the family.” In 2005 a business associate alerted the Chiang’s to an available space in

Southwest Florida. She remembers, “When we came down to check out the location we fell in love with the tranquility Naples and its residents offers.” Located off of the bustling Tamiami Trial, Charlie Chiang’s is still considered off the beaten path by many. It’s hard to see from the road and although adjacent to the Doubletree Guests Suites, it is independent from the hotel.
Chiang’s award winning décor is modern chic, with lots of nature light. There is a sushi bar, dining room and a patio along the narrow Cocohatchee River. With cuisine from China, Thailand, Japan and Singapore, be sure to try the signature appetizer; Spicy Tangy Dumplings ($7). Pork dumplings are covered in an addicting peanut sauce. A photo worthy, tableside presentation is the Flaming Steak Christiana ($20) where slices of flat iron steak are flambéed.
breast are served in a hollowed out pineapple, light and fresh. One of Chiang’s new favorites is the Basil & Black Pepper Chicken ($16). It comes in a sizzling hot pot with lots of basil, tender chicken, mushrooms, asparagus, snow peas, carrots and celery. After being in the restaurant business for 4 decades, what is it that keeps Chiang going? She says, “It is my commitment to my father who chose this path for me and my commitment to my family and my team who have been so supportive over the years.”
Christiana’s take on a traditional pork skillet dish, she says, “I added the rum and fire to give the dish a kick and a lot of fun.” She continues, “I originally only offered the dish at private parties...my friends loved it so much they gave it that name.” More points for creative presentation go to the Tropical Chicken in Pineapple ($16). elieving R & Anxiety Stress with
Medical Marijuana By Gina Birch
Coming from a plant, it’s a natural drug that calms hyperactive states such as anxiety along with a laundry list of other ailments.
Some 40-million adults in the United States suffer from anxiety. Only a small percentage ever seek treatment and of those who do, most turn to pharmaceuticals, which have a wide range of less than desirable side effects. Dr. Sonn, founder of Iona Health and Wellness, has seen great success when prescribing medical marijuana for patients with anxiety problems and disorders. About cannabis, he says, “What’s cool about this is it’s helping a system we already have in our body… it’s one of the only drugs in the world that mimics our neurochemical receptors. Medical marijuana works the same whether it’s produced by our body or not.”
Cannabis has also proven to be a successful treatment for stress relief. Dr. Sonn explains why this is important, saying, “Stress is inversely proportionate to disease. As your stress level goes up, your immune system goes down and the more likely you are to become sick.” When prescribing cannabis to patients, Dr. Sonn says, “I like to start oral, with oils and tinctures. Everyone’s dosing is different so I need to figure out your ratio.” Dr. Sonn grew up in Fort Myers and is an integrative physician who treats the whole person, not just the disease. The doctor says, “I like to teach people how to change their lives for the better.” He has extensive medical experience, and vast knowledge behind the science of medical marijuana, a treatment that he says, “It’s not recreational… I call it medicine.”
Dr. Sonn may be reached at

aith wore a T-shirt with the words “It is what it is.” She was one of the residents at a recent mobile pantry held in Naples by the Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food she receives means she can put more money toward paying bills and helps her cope in the wake of a recent family tragedy. “My daughter-inlaw died,” she said. Now she takes care of her son and two grandchildren. Faith is one of thousands of clients the Harry Chapin Food Bank serves yearly. With the holidays approaching, the food bank faces its most critical time of the year as it pushes forward on its mission: To lead our community in the fight to end hunger. In the three months between November 1st and the end of January, the Harry Chapin Food Bank will receive about 50 percent of the total monetary donations it collects for the fiscal year. These donations not only meet the heightened need of the holidays, but provide the means to carry on the food bank’s mission throughout the year. livinglocalfl.com | NOV/DEC 2017
The food bank was fortunate enough to receive many donations from the community in the wake of Hurricane Irma, but it’s unknown whether that generosity may translate to fewer donations during the holidays. This year, long-term recovery from Irma will mean the need is even greater. “We depend on charity at the holidays, the time when families draw together around food and focus on giving,” said Richard LeBer, president and CEO of the Harry Chapin Food Bank. “We

are confident that our community will continue to be generous through the holidays.”
give the money away so people can eat, because that’s being a nice, kind friend.”
Many are seeking help for the first time, like Angela, who lives in Fort Myers and recently attended her first mobile pantry food distribution. “My boyfriend and I are struggling since the hurricane,” said Angela, who is disabled. “We’re just behind financially,” she said. “I’ve never been here before.”
Last year, Joy went a step further. She set up piggy banks at both her mom and grandfather’s offices for donations and collected whatever spare change she could find. The result: another $28.88 donation. Joy plans to be back this year.
The food bank provides food to about 28,000 people a week through more than 150 partner agencies throughout Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Glades and Hendry counties. Last fiscal year, the food bank distributed more than 22.3 million pounds of food, equaling about 18.6 million meals for people in need.
The food bank thanks all the community “angels” who help feed the hungry. Every dollar donated can be turned into $8 worth of food.
