nd just like that, the holidays are upon us. As always, this issue is full of trusted businesses providing all kinds of services to help you navigate through this season from home repairs, healthcare, glamour, and of course, fun. Since we have been receiving so much positive feedback on our monthly recipe feature, we thought it would be fun to add a little extra this month to help step up your Thanksgiving dinner. Since cooking isn’t exactly my forte, I consulted with my good friend, and one of SW Florida’s most beloved chefs, Harold Balink for some turkey tips. These ideas are sure to impress your guests. Food is such an important part of the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. It’s hard to imagine that there are people in our own backyard having trouble providing meals for their family on a daily basis, not to mention the holidays. Enter Harr y Chapin Food Bank, an organization that helps underprivileged families to not only have a traditional Thanksgiving meal, but more importantly, provides for those families all year long. can help in their efforts to fight hunger in our community. Giving back is a big theme this time of year and it’s something Dr. Carmella Fernandez gives great care to year-round. Her specialized orthopedic practice, Fernandez Upper Extremity Institute, focuses on conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow. Dr. Fernandez shares her story; how life’s experiences drew her to a career in medicine and why her top priority is to always put her patients’ care first. During this Thanksgiving season, I would like to express my gratitude to our advertising partners. A big thank you also goes out to YOU for not only reading our magazine, but more importantly, supporting the businesses found in livinglocal.

r. Fernandez became a doctor to make a difference in people’s lives. Today she is owner of The Fernandez Upper Extremity Institute in Naples where she focuses on conditions effecting the hand, wrist, and elbow. She chose Southwest Florida to establish her career and left a large practice nearly one year ago to start her own practice in the heart of Naples, Florida. She says, “We love the area. My godparents have a house down here, so we would come down often and visit.” Her path to becoming a physician began as a young girl, when her father was diagnosed with a brain tumor. “I was exposed to medicine at an early age because of him.” The experience was not a good one for more than the obvious reasons. Besides the trauma of losing her father, she was disappointed with some of her family’s experience with the medical professionals caring for and treating her father. She says, “I wanted to be a different kind of doctor.” Dr. Fernandez was a competitive gymnast growing up. Her gymnastic abilities earned her a scholarship to the University of Illinois. It was there that she suffered an injury that sidelined her gymnastics, giving her pause to reflect on her career path. During this time, she committed to pursuing a career in medicine, with a strong interest in orthopedic surgery.
She remembers, “Through that experience I realized I wanted to be a surgeon.” Narrowing her focus on orthopedics, she took a liking to the intricacies of the hands and upper extremity saying, “It is very detail oriented and that’s what I enjoy. I love it.” She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, known today as Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey, and is a dual fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in surgery of the hand, wrist, and elbow. When it comes to hands, carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem. Occupations requiring the use of vibratory tools, or activities involving high force repetitive movements, can predispose an individual to developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel is also more common in individuals with diabetes and other underlying illnesses and can be associated with the hormonal changes brought on by pregnancy. “The carpal tunnel is a well-defined space within the wrist and hand, where the tendons that move our fingers and one nerve, the median nerve, pass through. If the tunnel becomes smaller, most often due to inflammation, then the nerve Continued on next page

Patient Sara Ann with Dr.Fernandez can become compressed,“ explains Dr. Fernandez. Over time the compressed nerve produces numbness and tingling in the hand, as well as pain and weakness when trying to grip objects. Positional changes of the wrist involving excessive flexion or extension can also predispose to increased pressure on the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. “Patients often admit that their symptoms seem to worsen in the evening making it difficult to sleep. This is due to the tendency for our wrists to fall into a flexed posture while sleeping. If carpal tunnel syndrome is diagnosed early, then symptoms can occasionally be addressed with night splinting”, she explains. If however, a patient has findings consistent with moderate or severe carpal tunnel syndrome, then surgical decompression
of the nerve is a reliable and successful mode of treatment. Surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome is the second most common type of musculoskeletal surgery in the United States. It is performed by one of two ways, either an open technique or endoscopic. Dr. Fernandez says, “I typically perform my carpal tunnel surgery using the endoscopic technique, which involves a 1cm incision at the flexion crease of the wrist. Studies show that endoscopic release allows individuals to return to their work and activities earlier than the open technique. I find this to be beneficial to the active patients I see here in Southwest Florida.” If you think you might be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome Dr. Fernandez says, “It never hurts to get information. If you have any concerns come in; it could

About Dr. Fernandez be something else.” She adds, “The first line of treatment isn’t always surgery. I’m here to provide you with the information and knowledge to comfortably reach a decision regarding your care.” Besides her expertise in treating carpal tunnel syndrome, Dr. Fernandez can address trauma and arthritis in the hand, wrist, and elbow. She also treats painful fractures, along with flexor tenosynovitis, also known as trigger finger. Most important to her practice, “I always put my patients first. Being on my own, I can make that a priority along with treating my employees well. I’m a firm believer in treating others the way you want to be treated.” Her favorite part of the job is meeting and connecting with her patients. She says, “I don’t have to operate on someone to make a difference. People come to physicians when they are in pain or nervous. It’s nice to make them laugh and reassure them that it’s going to be OK. I’m very fortunate that I get to do that.”
Dr. Fernandez was born and raised in New Jersey, and is the youngest of two siblings. She was a nationally ranked springboard diver and gymnast, and was awarded a gymnastics scholarship to the University of Illinois. Following graduation, her studies led her to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Fernandez was a pioneer in becoming the first graduate of the combined MD, MBA program from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers-Camden business school. She went on to complete a five year orthopedic surgery residency at LSU, followed by two additional years of fellowship, one at Yale University in Hand and Microsurgery followed by another year at the University of Pittsburgh in Upper Extremity Surgery. She and her husband Chris moved to Naples in 2016 and are the proud parents of two Chihuahuas, Alex and Phoebe. Dr. Fernandez founded the Fernandez Upper Extremity Institute in 2018 to help serve the people of Southwest Florida.

“Now I wear sundresses and acutally show the lower part of my legs. I haven’t done that for years.” — Laura
mylivinglocal.com | NOVEMBER 2018
pproximately 25% of Americans have varicose veins. Not only are they unsightly and painful, but more importantly they are a sign of underlying venous disease called venous insufficiency, according to Dr. Joseph Magnant, founder of Vein Specialists. Varicose veins are those thick, bluish veins that bulge just below the skin surface of the legs and feet. They look twisted and may be painful. Often related to heredity, they can also worsen during pregnancy, with standing for long periods of time, advancing age, and obesity. Varicose veins are not a disease unto themselves. According to Dr. Magnant, they are a sign of venous disease, also referred to as leak y valves, venous insufficiency, or venous reflux disease. So what causes them? There are one way check valves in veins that, when functioning properly, help keep the blood moving up the legs back toward the heart. Sometimes they become weak and leak, resulting in high pressure in the leg veins. Dr. Magnant says, “A branch of the vein may dilate and become ropey developing into a varicose vein. Even though varicose veins often appear first in the calves, the pressure that creates them comes from above. They start small and can wind all of the way up to the thigh where the branch is connected to the leaky vein.” It happened to Laura Oliver who works in the shoe depar tment of Dillard’s and spends long hours on her feet. In fact, her varicose veins had started to appear years ago. She states, “My father had varicose veins and he waited until he was 70 to have them fixed. I wasn’t going
Varicose Veins to wait that long.” She was not only self-conscious about the appearance of her legs, but they hurt and would cramp at night, and sometimes they would swell. Dr. Magnant says those symptoms and signs are common in people with venous disease, even if they don’t have visible signs such as varicose veins. Laura adds, “If mine weren’t bulging, I would have just thought my legs swell at end of the day and would not have made the connection to vein disease. I don’t think I would have sought help because I didn’t know swelling was a sign of vein disease.” When talking to customers who c ame into her shoe depar t ment wearing compression stockings, Laura says, “They all went to Vein Specialists. I heard nothing but great things about their team.” Af ter she made an appointment with Vein Specialists she says, “All of the great things I heard were true.” Laura had a comprehensive ultrasound performed on both legs and a treatment plan was decided upon. She had an endovenous ablation in which heat is used to seal the vein. Dr. Magnant says, “These veins are superficial, located outside of the muscle. They are only responsible for about 5% of the return from the legs when the valves are working.” After the endovenous ablation, the blood no longer pools in the vein, immediately reducing the pressure. “I went back to work af ter the procedure, standing all day with compression hose on and it didn’t hurt,” says Laura. Not only was the process quick and with ver y little discomfort, she saw an improvement in the appearance of her varicose veins almost immediately.
“About 25 million people in the U.S. have varicose veins,” says Dr. Magnant, “and another 25 million have venous insufficiency that presents with signs other than varicose veins.” If left untreated, venous insufficiency can progress to the point of causing skin changes which can lead to open wounds. “Vein disease may not be 100% curable,” says Dr. Magnant. “But we can keep it under control. Venous reflux disease is a medical condition. Spider veins are usually considered cosmetic, however, varicose veins are a sign of a medical problem that should be investigated.” If you have varicose veins, leg cramps, leg fatigue or swelling, skin discoloration, or ulcers, you many have venous disease. Call Vein Specialists for a consultation.

Since starting his career at Best Home Services, Chris has seen and been a part of the rapid growth and development of Best Home Services in the Southwest Florida area. He feels that the word “family” is the best way to describe the company. “Everyone looks out for each other,” Norris said. “If I need help with something, I can call someone, and they will show up.” We asked Chris, as an electrician, what advice does he have for his
customers in Southwest Florida. “If you have a question about something, call a professional.” Chris explained that he has learned a lot as an electrician. “I’ve learned how the stormy weather in Southwest Florida can negatively affect the electrical system.” Chris stressed the importance of having surge protection. “Living in Florida means that we live in the lighting capital of the world,” Chris said t hat he regular l y goes into homes that don’t have the proper surge protection. “Daily, I see what happens when lightning strikes a home without surge protection.” C h r i s s ay s t h a t h e co n s t a n t l y reminds his customers about the benefits of having surge protection in their homes, and how it can save their appliances and devices. “Having surge protection in a home can save the electrical system.”

Chris doesn’t have a dog yet, but he plans on getting either an English Mastiff or English Bulldog soon. “I had an English Mastiff before, and I love them.” Although Chris says that he loves English Mastiff dogs, he still has a soft spot for English Bulldogs. “If I decide to get an English Bulldog, I want to get a female dog, and I’ll name her Lola.” Chris, who is originally from Washington D.C., moved down to Southwest Florida for the beautiful sunshine, and the endless fishing spots. “I like to fish, play volleyball, and run.” O ne of Chr is’ favor i te hobbies is to play beach volleyball. “Every weekend, I like going to the Naples Pier to play beach volleyball,” Chris says that he’s the nicest guy that you will ever meet, and we can attest to that.

Gum Disease More than half of Americans have some kind of gum or periodontal disease. Dr. Robert Bracho, co-owner of s.m.i.l.e. Dental Bonita Springs, says many people don’t even realize they have it, and those who do, are often afraid to seek treatment which could lead to even bigger health concerns. Traditional treatment for gum disease involves painful surgery, however, Dr. Bracho is one of only a handful of dentists in Southwest Florida to offer the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure or LANAP. He explains, “The laser works at a specific wave length targeting only the damaged gum tissue to create an environment for healing.” There is no cutting or sutures and discomfort is minimal. LANAP is quite remarkable when it comes to not only treating gum disease, but also reversing the damage it causes. “In dental school most of us were taught that once bone is lost due to periodontal disease, it would not come back. However, I’ve seen bone growth with the use of LANAP.”
Periodontal disease doesn’t just affect the mouth, according to Dr. Bracho. He warns, “There is a systemic link to gum disease and cardio vascular health. It can be a direct trigger for heart attack or stroke in some people.” If you have bleeding gums, pain when brushing and flossing, or chronic bad breath, you could have gum disease. Call Dr. Bracho for an appointment.
About Dr. Bracho
From Maryland, Dr. Bracho played college football at St Lawrence University and received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University Maryland Dental School. His extensive postgrad training not only includes laser treatment for periodontal disease, but also Invisalign, sedation dentistry, and digital smile design.

& Therapy with Regenerative
REDUCING PAIN ENHANCING LIFESTYLE
P
eople suffering from injuries and degenerative diseases are often told surgery is the only way to alleviate or reduce pain, but Dr. Ronald Gardner, founder of Gardner Orthopedics says that’s simply not the case and regenerative therapy is one reason why. He has been using regenerative therapies for decades with success rates of 90%. Many patients are familiar with or have heard of a regenerative variety known as biologics, which includes the use of platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapies. There are also non-biologic regenerative therapies that most commonly f all under t he umb rella heading of prolotherapy. Dr. Gardner says, “These are easier on the system, less expensive, and work pretty well for mylivinglocal.com | NOVEMBER 2018
things like tendonitis, bursitis, and early osteoarthritis; conditions that need tissues to be stimulated to heal themselves.” This course of treatment typically involves a series of precisely placed injections of the tissue stimulating compounds. However, the most exciting new findings when it comes to regenerative therapies, according to Dr. Gardner is, “In biologics, and particularly with platelet rich plasma, there are new applications that appear to have some utility in the areas of treating peripheral neuropathy, erectile dysfunction, hair regrowth, and skin regenerative therapies used in aesthetic anti-aging.” Dr Gardner comically admits that he has no intention to treat ED, but notes that as for hair regrowth, these modified treatments are done at a
fraction of the cost of hair transplant or implants, and even better— it appears that THEY WORK. Dr. Gardner says, “You would not believe the before and after pictures of some of these patients, some of whom were distinctly balding, and afterwards had a full head of hair.” L i ke w i s e , t h e u s e o f b i o l o g i c therapies for peripheral neuropathy is a budding science that adds hope to people who have had almost no effective therapies until now. Skin anti-aging experts are frequently using “PRP facials” (ever heard of a “Vampire Facial”?) as part of their skin rejuvenation protocols, and Dr. Gardner has assisted some of them in gaining the necessary expertise to properly perform these treatments. While hair regrow th, treating peripheral neuropathy, and anti-aging therapies might seem a curious extension of treatment at an orthopedic office, Dr. Gardner explains, “We have more expertise than anyone else in this part of the state with the use of regenerative therapies. It makes sense for us to pilot programs for hair regrowth, peripheral neuropathy, and anti-aging interventions due to our safety record and experience as part of a lifestyle enhancement effort, even though it really has no musculoskeletal application. We will, on a selected basis, begin to offer some of those protocols soon and those interventions will likely also include nutritional support and even hyperbaric oxygen therapies as part of the algorithm.” For the majorit y of or thopedic patients, regenerative therapies are used with great success to treat conditions such as bursitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome, and certain specific areas of arthritis to name a few. But according to Dr. Gardner, “Knee and shoulder arthritis are by far our highest areas of success for these treatments.”
The type of biologic regenerative therapy used at Gardner is called autologous, meaning the injections are derived from your own cells. Dr. Gardner explains, “We take the cells from your own blood, fat, or bone marrow, so the risk associated is very very low.” For PRP, the process begins with a blood draw from the patient. The platelet s are separated and then injected into the injured or arthritic joint. A similar process involves using liposuction to harvest fat cells that are emulsified then centrifuged to get the most concentrated specimens possible. Dr. Gardner uses the stem cell rich layer from fat to inject into the joint. A similar process is used with bone marrow. These procedures are done under local anesthesia right in the office. “The injections stimulate your body to heal itself and by replenishing the cellular material in damaged tissues, it further stimulates or augments the healing process,” explains Dr. Gardner. He adds, “Patients often go from barely being able to walk to walking without a limp. It is impressive.” For people who have chronic pain and want to avoid surgery, regenerative therapies can offer excellent solutions. And soon you can add hair regrowth, skin rejuvenation, and treatment for peripheral neuropathy to the list of regenerative services delivered at Gardner Orthopedics.

TURKEY with Chef Harold Balink
T
he turkey is typically the star guest for Thanksgiving and also the cause for much anxiety. So how do you get it right this time? We’ve turned to award winning Southwest Florida Chef Harold Balink for turkey tips guaranteed to make YOU the star in the kitchen this year. Besides making sure the bird is completely thawed and its cavit y cleaned out, his best bird tip is to brine it overnight in a mixture of one part sugar, two parts salt and 10 parts water; rinse well before cooking. Chef Balink explains, “It doesn’t matter how you cook it, brining ads so much more moisture.” OVEN ROASTED: Chef Balink says go low and slow to keep the bird moist, “Set the oven on about 200 ºF or 225ºF, rub the turkey with butter, and put it in.” Get the temperature in the thickest part of the breast up to 155-158 degrees, then take it out and turn up the heat to 450 º F. As the bird sits “carry over cooking” takes place. Chef Balink says, “It should get up to about 165ºF after it comes out of the oven. Then rub it with
mylivinglocal.com | NOVEMBER 2018
some more butter and pop it back in for 10-15 minutes to get that beautiful golden brown.” DEEP FRIED: A much faster method, first check that your pot is big enough to easily fit the bird. Get the oil temperature up to 400 degrees and completely thaw and dry the turkey, including its cavity, before submerging (never put a frozen turkey in hot oil…very dangerous!). Chef Balink says, “You don’t need to inject it (the turkey) with anything if you brine it. It’s brown, moist and beautiful.” DEBONING AND STUFFING: Chef Balink says, “Deboning is a pain, but you have this beautiful flat canvass of turkey that you can layer with anything from sausage to stuffing, and roll it up….It doesn’t need to be perfect, people will be wowed that it is all in one.” The cooking method is once again slow and low. Chef Balink says serve your bird with a glass of festive Beaujolais Nouveau and you are good to go. He continues, “Man it’s tough to beat a homemade Thanksgiving meal when you do it right.”
TIPS About Chef Harold Balink Harold is the chef/owner of Harold’s, a small farm to table restaurant in Fort Myers with a big following. His exposure to the culinary world began as a young man working in his grandparent’s steakhouse in Colorado. An apprenticeship with King’s Crown at South Sea’s Island Resort on Captiva Island brought the popular chef to the area but he didn’t stay initially. After working around the country he eventually returned to Southwest Florida where he has had quite a successful run with restaurants on Fort Myers Beach, downtown and at The Bell Tower Shops, before opening Harold’s three years ago. His culinary degree comes from Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island and his Hotel and Restaurant Management degree is from Boston University. He was also invited to cook at the esteemed James Beard House in New York City. With two grown daughters and two dogs, Harold not only feeds his patrons stomachs but also their souls. He says, “I’m passionate about serving people, not just food and wine. Everyone has a niche and for me it’s being a servant. I find that is when I seem to be happiest.”

Cataract surgery has come a long way over the years. Initially when surgeons removed the cloudy lens they did not replace it with anything, so patients were left wearing those thick, coke bottle glasses. Recovery took weeks. Today t he procedure not onl y removes the cataract, or cloudy lens, but Refractive Cataract Surgery also allows Dr. Collins to replace that lens with a variety of choices to suit your needs, desires, and lifestyle. According to Dr Collins, “These special lenses, called Premium IOL’s, used frequently in conjunction with a s t ig ma t i sm - co r re c t ing co r ne a l incisions, allow people to see things both near, far, and ever y thing in between without constantly needing to pick up a pair of glasses.” As for Nancy, she says, “The surgery was easier than having my teeth cleaned. It was painless and it was fast.” But the best part, “I didn’t think I was missing that much before surgery, but I’m seeing colors now that I haven’t seen in years. The sky is bluer and the grass is greener. I not only can see the trees but also the birds in them. I’m like a little kid.”
Dr. Collins says “Our vision has such a great impact on the things we love about life, whether it’s spending time outdoors, traveling, reading, or keeping up with grandchildren. Refractive Cataract Surgery provides this incredible opportunity to choose your vision and improve your quality of life. I feel grateful that I have the ability to help people live a better, more fulfilling life.” N anc y s t ill uses her cheater s occasionally, for things like threading a needle, but says the strength she uses is half of what she used to need. She says about Dr. Collins, “He has the personality we all want to see in our doctors. He has a terrific bedside manner and I can’t imagine my vision being any better.”
ABOUT DR. COLLINS: Dr. Michael Collins opened the doors to Collins Vision in 2004. He graduated from medical school at Vanderbilt University and completed his eye surgery residency at Emory University. During his advanced fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery at Hunkeler Eye Institute with Dr. Dan Durrie in Kansas City, Dr. Collins was active in ophthalmic research and played significant investigator roles during numerous FDA clinical trials. When Dr. Collins is not seeing patients, he shows his passion for the community by serving on the board of directors for the United Way and Captains for Clean Water.

L A E P P A B R U C R U O Y P U CLEANING with Window Genie
W
ith rainy season complete and the holidays just around the corner, now is the time to shake off the dust—on your home. To help you get those hard to reach spots like windows and gutters, Window Genie has opened its doors in Southwest Florida and the business is ready to serve. Daniel Anisz owns the local franchise that he describes as, “A one-stop shop for many home owners’ needs- from pressure cleaning driveways and siding, to soft washing roofs, as well as applying a variety of window films. We can help with all of that and more.”
For years the Punta Gorda native worked in operations at the head office of a large commercial landscape and maintenance franchise in Toronto, Canada. He says, “I did a little bit of everything and it gave me an understanding of business as well as the benefits of owning a franchise.”
Ready for warm weather and a better qualit y of life, Daniel returned to Southwest Florida this year with his wife, Charlene, and their daughter s, Hailey and Sloan. “We both had good jobs, but we wanted to own our own business and grow something here; have our own legacy.”
A fun, seasonal service that Window Even better, he says, Genie is currently “We can handle four providing, has nothing or five services in one to do with cleaning AN SLO & Y ILE HA day, so that when the DANIEL, CHARLENE, but with lighting. owner returns home Daniel and his crew from work, it looks completely different will custom design and install your from when they left in the morning.” outdoor Christmas lights. The best part of the experience for Daniel is, “Seeing people’s faces when their homes look tremendously cleaner, whether it’s the windows they can now see through or seeing the natural color of their roofs again.” While Window Genie is perhaps best known for window cleaning, their list of services provided is a long one, on top of the jobs already mentioned, includes clearing out gutters, pressure washing patios, screened cages, and more.
mylivinglocal.com | NOVEMBER 2018
“Every year you open a box and spend an hour untangling the lights. Then another hour properly arranging the cords. Finally, you pull out the ladder and yell at your husband,” laughing, he continues, “We make all of that go away.” Working within your budget, Window Genie measures your space, designs your light set up, and installs them. When the holidays are over, technicians will remove the lights, store them, and keep

them for the following year. If you can no longer hang your own lights, don’t have the time to do it, or simply don’t want to do it but still want to express your holiday spirit, this is a perfect service for you. And if you have it done before November 15th, Window Genie will give you a 10% discount. Even though they are up early, you can turn the lights on whenever you want. Loyalty programs are also in place if you use the service again next year. Not just for the holiday season, but all year long, Daniel believes in giving back to the community. “As a small business I can’t write big checks, but I can help a veteran, a family, or someone in need, whether it is help with their driveway or roof.” He praises his four technicians for giving back with their time and talent along with their expertise and customer service: Austin, Justin, Derek and Will. With more than 20 years of customer service under his belt, Daniel says,
“I want to build relationships with Southwest Florida residents, I don’t want to do a one - t ime cleaning ser vice. I want them to know that w henever t hey need somet hing done, they don’t even have to think of calling someone else because they are confident that we will take care of them.” Before your friends and family descend for t he holiday s and before t he snowbirds return and fill the appointment book s; call W indow G enie to clean the film off your windows, driveway, and roof, clear the dirt and leaves from your gutters, and freshen up the appearance and function of your home.

ouston, 86, hadn’t been to a food pantry in a long time. But now he needed help for himself and his disabled adult son who lived with him. His social security and the $45 a month he received in food stamps wasn’t able to cover his bills and buy groceries. That’s when he decided to come to a pantry in Bonita Springs that partners with the Harry Chapin Food Bank. He chose a few food items, loaded them into his 18-year-old car, and left. He was full of gratitude. “If I hadn’t got people helping me, I couldn’t make it,” he said. Houston is one of thousands of clients the Harry Chapin Food Bank serves annually through its more than 150 partner agencies, 30 monthly mobile pantries, and senior programs like the Care & Share Senior Feeding Campaign.

In the last fiscal year, the Harr y Chapin Food Bank distributed 24 million pounds of food throughout Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Glades, and Hendry counties. With the holidays approaching, the food bank faces its most critical time of the year as it pushes forward on its mission, to lead our community in the fight to end hunger. The three months bet ween November 1st and the end of January, the Harry Chapin Food Bank will receive about 50 percent of the total monetary donations it collects for the fiscal year. These donations not only meet the heightened need of the holidays, but provide the means to carry on the food bank’s mission throughout the year. “ We depend on charit y at the holidays, the time when families draw together around food and focus on

First his mother-in-law, and then his wife, became ill and had to go into a nursing home. The bills drained all their retirement savings. Just recently, Jeff and his 3-year-old daughter went to one of the emergency mobile pantries on Fort Myers Beach, that was set up to specifically help those economically impacted by the water quality crisis. “I work in a restaurant. Our business right now is down,” he said. “This is a tourist place. If there are no tourists, there is no business. Without business, there is no money, and with no money, there is no food.”
