EDITOR’S NOTE

Let it Rain! I remember the time when autumn followed summer. I was in a different country, which had so much to offer, but skipped something very dear to me that I celebrated all my growing years- Indian Monsoon. I write this above the clouds on my way to Mumbai from Delhi. Leaving the hot summer of Delhi (Monsoon still a few days away at this point of time) towards the pouring Mumbai. Excitement engulfs me, to be greeted by the weather that makes Mumbai city more awesome than it already is. More sparkle to its already glittering personality. One of the ways we celebrate being a tropical country is by welcoming the Monsoons every year. Yes we are the privileged.

Monsoon: Being Indian Editor-in-chief

Monsoon: It’s a celebratory word. Bringing in relief to the farmers as much as it does to the urban population trying to beat the growing summer heat. The word is almost symbolic of being Indian (hence my calling it the Indian Monsoon). Remember the film Monsoon Wedding. Monsoon Wedding is as Indian in its name as it is in its cinematic experience. My cousin when naming her international food product company wanted it to be Indian in its feel and sound for all Western folks. She named it the Monsoon Kitchen. The name by default represented it as an Indian brand for the West. No we don’t have a proprietary hold on that word or the weather in itself… But it’s very much a special for all of us. A special for all lovers… Be it a Chai lover or a handholdingdrenched lover. It’s special for the poor child who may find every single puddle to jump on or for the extinct crafty paperboat-making child. It’s special for the plants and the trees that shine in their true green color. There’s always going to be reasons to hide from the rain. The trouble it may cause in your office commute, the time

Anubhav Anand @anubhavanand www.anubhavanand.com/blog

it may take to dry your laundry at home, the fear of your car rusting or an unexpected splash of water by a passing vehicle. But there will be more reasons to Not hide in the rain. There are more reasons to embrace its arrival and its shear beauty in its journey from the sky to the earth. Let the beautiful Monsoon rains soak your tears in its flow giving you a reason to celebrate it. Go make some Indian Monsoon memories! * Repost from July’2016 Issue editorial.

heavy downpour can turn into a chance for you to kick back and collect your thoughts and gear yourself up for the challenges ahead. BE ONE WITH NATURE We are blessed with ghats very close to the city and the monsoons bring out the beautiful waterfalls at various spots. MONSOON MEMORIES

BRINGING THE NEIGHBOURHOOD TOGETHER The favourite thing about the monsoon in a city like Mumbai is that it brings out the best in people. You hear stories about strangers offering a ride, sharing a bottle of water or snack with someone who’s been stranded in traffic or just help a person stuck in the rain. These stories are incredible and so inspiring. The city that never sleeps, pauses to help each other out. Mumbai monsoons are truly magical and evoke the best in each hooder.

Chembur The Next Restaurant Hub

by Priyam Thakkar

Mumbai! The city of dreams is the Economic and Tourist hub of India. It’s full of dreamers and hard-labourers, starlets and gangsters, stray dogs and exotic birds, artists and servants, fisherfolk and crorepatis (millionaires), and lots and lots of people. But what is everyone’s favourite thing about Mumbai? Food! Mumbai has all types of food places where you can find food dishes from all around the world but there are certain places in Mumbai have come to be known as restaurant hubs. These areas are Colaba, Lower Parel, Bandra and Andheri that have some of the oldest and classiest restaurants in Mumbai. But wait, there is one more place that is coming up with some

Legendz by Lazeez Owned by the owners of Lazeez which is already famous for their sheeshas in Bandra, obviously making Legendz one of the best place for sheeshas in Chembur. Along with the classic minty and fruity flavors this place also serves Fruit sheeshas ! Yes, sheeshas made out of actual fruits. Along with the uniqueness these sheeshas also have amazing new flavors. This place not only masters in sheeshas but also serves of one of the most delectable chicken dishes. All their chicken dishes are marinated perfectly and then cooked making the chicken tender and super-tasty. So, if you planning to visit this place then try the ‘Mixed fruit sheesha’. As far as food is concerned, Malai Murgh Tikka are a must try.

classic fine dines and restaurants. Chembur ! Yepp, you heard right. There are a lot of new places opened in Chembur in the span of 2 years. More than 75 fine dines, restaurants, pubs and hookah parlours have opened in this time. But the question rises is that can these places compete with some of the top-notch places in Mumbai? The answer is a big ‘Yes’ because most of these places are highly innovative and have their own specialities. While I’ve visited most of these places and the food and ambiance at most of the places is top-notch, these 3 places stand out above all the others.

Singh Saab Located in the Sindhi colony of Chembur, Singh Saab has Punjabi vibes right from its decor to the names of their dishes and their flavours. The most amazing thing about this place are the names of their dishes and drinks on the menu. The names go like ‘Burrraahhhh!!!’ , ‘Desi Tharra’ , ‘Bholi Panjaban’ , ‘Singh Saab Di Talwar’ and many more. Along with ‘desi’ names, the flavours in their starters, subzis, biryanis and desserts have that ‘desiness’ too which makes them unique when compared to most of the fine dines out there. So if you are planning to go on a Mini Punjab dinner trip to this place then make sure you do try these dishes: -Garlic Mushroom Multani -Methi Mutter and Malai -Rose Petal Phirni

Flip Bar and Kitchen The entrees served at Flip are one of the most luscious and appetizing food dishes I have ever eaten and that’s why it is one of the best places in Mumbai. This 6 month year old place has its menu consulted by one of the most genius chef consultants Chef Saif. Besides having some amazing and unique nachos, appetizers and milk shakes; the entrees will definitely steal your heart. They have a continental menu for main course that consists of classic dishes from all over the world. All these dishes consist of a piece of steak, rice, salad and a sauce on the side that makes it a perfect meal. So if you are planning to visit this place, these dishes are one of the best dishes I’ve ever had:

1.for board Paradise game lovers This Cafe in Andheri has more than 150 board games! by Dhruvil Shah. If you’re like me, you would have a drawer full of card and board games as a child. But as we all grew, technology came into picture, and sadly card and board games vanished from our daily lives. Back in our childhood, we used to sit with our friends and play Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, etc . But all those games have been replaced by electronic applications like Clash of Clans and Mini Militia. There are certain cafes in Mumbai that have 4-5 cliche games. But here comes a cafe that comes with an aim to take you away from all electrical gadgets for a couple of hours and have a memorable time with your loved ones. It is a Pair-a-Dice for board game lovers

14

(pun intended). Pair a Dice Cafe located in Oshiwara in Andheri(West) is a place that brings all those childhood memories back. This cafe has a collection of more than 150 board games! ( They add 10 games every month to their collection). This collection boasts of board games ranging from Snakes and Ladders to the classic Monopoly. There are a lot of new board games like Cartegana, Lords of Vegas, Forbidden Desert and Istanbul as well but there is nothing to worry about if you don’t know how to play these games. The staff at the cafe is well versed with these games and will explain you the rules of these games in no time. You can change as many games

as you want in the time that you are allotted. The pricing scheme of this cafe is also quite different. They charge per hour per person. But what makes this pricing scheme special is their unique offer. Rs. 350 for upto five hours per person in which you can buy food worth Rs. 150 from the cafe. Pair A Dice Cafe has a small kitchen that serves a variety of appetizers, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, noodles and shakes. But the hot favourites at this place are their freakshakes, their Mexican Bhel and their Penne Pasta. A theme based cafe usually does not have food up to the mark. But the food served at Pair A Dice is quite tasty.

Really makes the Ice-cream experience the best one! This place is open till late night around 3.00 am which is a plus point for people having long working hours as well as for the night crawlers. The only thing it lacks for is the sitting area as it does not have one but that barely counts when one is busy enough wit ones falooda. This place is usually crowded because of the fame it has got over the ages. There are people coming over here since a long time and have been loyal customers. The service too is satisfactory and quick which is again a plus point. It’s simply beautiful to come over at this place with your family or friends and see them smile as they enjoy their desserts.

4. Ice Cream Pakoda Vala by Sebin Anson

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your lunch in the form of an ice-cream? It may soon become a reality with the help of Monika ice-cream’s eccentric flavors. The top most flavors in the variety list include karela(bitter gourd), adrak(ginger), nimbu(lemon) and even mirchi(chilies). Whereas their special items that make the customers coming back for more include the peru(guava) ice-cream and the ice-cream pakoda. The peru ice-cream is served with sprinkled chili powder on top just the way we eat guava cut sprinkled with chili powder .The taste is simply mind-blowingly. The Ice-cream pakoda consists of a waffle like crusty sphere which is fried in oil for a few seconds then filled in with ice-cream and served with a generous topping of chocolate sauce. Now it’s up to you to decide whether it is served hot or cold. It’s a pity that this dessert can’t be home delivered but that doesn’t stop the customers from coming over to have these delicacies again and again. This delight is available for 60 rupees only (current price). This franchise which started in Vapi, Gujarat over 19 years ago, is now flourishing in virar (address: Shop no. 1, Poonam Supreme apart., opp. New Viva College, near D-mart, Virar (w) Palghar-401303. They are quite content with the way things are going on so there are no thoughts on expanding the business as of now, as they wish to serve the people of Virar in a full-fledged way. We look forward to their more eccentric flavors which will definitely tickle our taste buds. Hoping for the customers to leave with a smile on their faces in the following years to come.

On the final day, the crowd turnout was more than 2000 and with folks bringing in drums and trumpets, the atmosphere was maddening. Parle Xenons outwitted Parle Indians in the penalties to announce themselves champions of championship division and celebrated their promotion to premier league with a bash! Next up was the exhibition match between National level blind football tournament 2017, Bangalore’s winners – Team A Aaisha and Team B Aaisha of Maharashtra. The blind girls’ teams gave an outstanding performance, scoring goals that they felt but unfortunately couldn’t see. This touched the crowd’s heart, for which it gave a standing ovation to the players. The message that those players weren’t disabled but actually differently able was conveyed to everyone with a live example. The finals for which everyone was waiting for finally kicked off at 8:30 pm. Parle Messiahs Vs. Parle Knights was one of the most intense finals the league ever saw. With both teams having their goalkeepers in top form and strikers on fire, it was impossible to be seated on the stands, one twist here, a good pass there, strong shoot, gasp! Such was the story of every attempt made by both the teams in a goalless first half. Then came that moment in the second half, when Vinod, the striker of Parle Messiahs proved to be the Messiah for his team, as he beautifully beat the keeper with his ball going towards the top corner. A magnificent goal. That goal earned him the match ball.

Mumbai Local Trains by Pooja Kochar

An average Mumbaikar spends 2 hours commuting on a daily basis. We are lucky to have a robust local train network that connects the city from one end to another but how long will we be able to sustain considering the number of commuters increase by more than 10 folds and the trains don’t. Those familiar faces you see every morning comfort you. The pace, at which you jump into a moving train and the skill of making your way out in one piece with all your belongings, is an art. Women in this city have somehow made peace with this chaos but the situation is getting more suffocating and unsafe with every passing month. For a woman who leaves her house at 7 AM and returns after almost 12 hours in the evening, security in local trains is not

20

a trivial issue. Maybe you are lucky enough to have never encountered an unpleasant incident but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. We need collective strength to fight this nuisance. The government is making an attempt to make train commutes safe by allocating a police constable in the ladies compartment during late-night trains but is this enough? Most of the cameras installed are damaged and have received a lukewarm response from the commuters. The number of sexual harassment and eve teasing cases has almost doubled. I am not saying that the authorities are not trying but we need some practical measures urgently. The gap between the crime and reporting is so long that most of the cases are never solved.

July 2017 | Volume 3 Issue 4 | Living Local Mumbai

We asked the women of Mumbai for suggestions with respect to making train commute safe and convenient, here are a few interesting ideas that could be explored at the earliest.

More space The authorities should increase the frequency of ladies special trains during peak hours, or increase the number of ladies compartments. When women represent 50 % of the vibe of this city, why not give them equality in terms of their daily commute? We definitely need more space on the harbor and central line trains.

Involve women to drive initiatives Involve women in your initiatives and safety drives. Most of the initiatives introduced by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police Force (GRPF) go unnoticed due to lack of involvement from women. The more women talk and discuss about the security helplines and safety measures, the more natural it will seem to them at the time of panic.

Use of intelligent technology We have conveniently moved to the digital world. Everything has a GPS and App function. Use of intelligent technology in the form of quick safety alert features, location alert, and free WiFi in the local trains is an effective way of reaching out to the officials. Official apps introduced in the past are not very functional. Also, poor connectivity and lack of WiFi in the compartments makes them very difficult to navigate quickly.

“

The gap between the crime and reporting is so long that most of the cases are never solved....

Current efforts made by the authorities are in the right direction but they need to reach out to the right people with the correct context to make a difference. Mumbai has given me a lot of strength of character and that gives me the confidence to raise my voice on behalf of women who’s issues need to be addressed on priority. We are ready to work with the government to make a difference. July 2017 | Volume 3 Issue 4 | Living Local Mumbai 21

The sole motive behind starting this account in 2009 was Saylee’s teenage obsession towards everything from Harry Potter to Jonas Brothers. Getting up-close and ‘virtually’ personal with her favourite celebrities is what I had in mind, and that did happen with me getting RTs, replies and even follows from them. “What basically started off as a strictly personal account, @saylee_padwal has now grown into a brand of its own. I still get asked – Why didn’t you take up a more unique username? Well, I did. What could be more unique than being yourself? Under saylee_padwal, I now tweet about food, movies, cricket, music, everything Mumbai-related, and occasionally personal rants.”

Human

Library Mumbai

Human Library Mumbai’s first event itself witnessed a foot fall of more than 450 eager readers and the broad selection of 13 books provided Mumbaikars with ample choice to challenge their stereotypes and neutralize their prejudices. The readers took advantage of this opportunity - leaving books, librarians, organizers & readers amazed at the impact of HLM. The librarians found the books to fly off the shelves in the first 15 minutes of registration. The books wereoff the shelves, not to be restocked by 5:45 pm. The main aim of this event was to neutralize the negative connotations or stigmas attached to certain situations in our societies. Some of the prejudices covered at the event were gender bias, sexual identity, professional bias, molestation, religious identity and body image

“Don’t judge? a book by its cover” How many times have you read this quote and really faced the challenges of its production? We at Human Library use this as our anthem and our value! The Human Library is a revolutionary movement which originated in Denmark and now has its presence in more than 70 countries. It was started 12 years ago as an antiviolence initiative. Initially, it was restricted to peer-to-peer discussions about prejudices and violence in the society but today it’s a place to bridge the gap between people both inside and outside the ring of prejudices. It is a place where real people as “books” are on loan to readers and where difficult questions are expected, appreciated, discussed and answered.

How many times have you read this quote and really faced the challenges of its production? We at Human Library use this as our anthem and our value!

The Human Library Mumbai (HLM) is an extension of the organisation in Mumbai. Mumbai, a thriving metropolis bears people from various cultures, religions, occupations. You won’t find a more diverse city in India! Here, everyone has a story to tell. This city is the epitome of embracing diversity and so it becomes the best place to hold a classroom without walls.

How does it work? HLM works towards creating personal dialogue between a ‘BOOK’ and a ‘READER’. Just like any public library, we have ‘BOOKS’ or people who are at the brim of prejudices and we have ‘READERS’- people who are willing to challenge their mental frameworks and listen to their respective books. We tap into various boxes of prejudices like July 2017 | Volume 3 Issue 4 | Living Local Mumbai 31

sexuality, occupation, lifestyle, religion, culture etc. On a decided day a “reader” comes into the library and gets a library card which directs him to his “book”. A reader has the experience of listening to someone’s life story first hand, take in the rollercoaster of emotions ranging from hard hitting grit,, successes, failures, hopes and the list goes on. It leaves a life changing impact on the reader and the book. They discuss the topics that you wouldn’t talk about at a supermarket or family dinners.

Who is it for? EVERYONE and ANYONE. Anyone who is lifelong learner. Anyone who Facebook page @humanlibrarymumbai. They can also be reached at humanlibrarymumbai@gmail.com . Where will these events take place: Across the city, at public places. Who can attend: This event is free for all

Human Library Team: Founder: Andaleeb Qureshi Members: Nicky Mansuri, Priyanka Pimpale, Priya Dabholkar, Sahiban Crasto, Shailaja Nakahre, Sharaf Zaidi, Shruti Nair, Surmeet Kaur, Mayur Ramteke, Bhakti Mahmbre, Jitesh Doshi, Soham Sil, Ajinkya Bhonde is brave enough to challenge their judgments of others and of things that we merely don’t understand. Anyone who is looking to broaden their perspective and open their minds to things that people find comfort in running away from. It is also for people who face these judgments and feel the need to let others know their story. It is for people who understand the challenges of being boxed in and want to fight for their respective boxes.

HLM is scheduled to take place every month in the city. More information on upcoming events and for registration as ‘Books’ or ‘Readers’ is available on their

What is the outcome? A change. A change in perspectives or thinking or attitude or acceptance or even just silent tolerance of the “other”, of the side that we may not be able to understand. The main aim that HLM strives to achieve is driving away the several invisible prejudices that separate us.

TAROTSCOPE

SCORPIO

(October 23rd November 22nd):

YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF JULY 2017

THE YEAR AHEAD FOR CANCER Happy Birth Anniversary! Keep walking on your chosen path; you are on the right track. Once you reach your goal, it will far exceed your expectations. Look after your health in familiar ways. Finances will require alertness, but overall, there is no cause for worry. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th): July will be exciting and potentially speed-cruise. You can handle it, of course. Remember to be inclusive in all your actions because people around you can help far more than you expect. Also, practice the virtue of patience. There is a lot to gain from it. Health will be good with regular exercise and familiar routines. Finances will be stable.

LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): July will be an active month for you. However, do not try to make everything meaningful, as most events will be about others. Instead, focus on increasing your database of knowledge and information. Cultivate gravitas. Health will benefit from physical activities. Finances will be good though expenses increase.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): July will throw up uneasy events, but with a little help from reliable friends, you have just what it takes to come out on top. You will surprise yourself with your resourcefulness. Keep hold of that wisdom. Health will be good through lots of exercise and some downtime. Finances will be stable.

VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): July will be an enlivening month for you. Many things will be exactly as only you can handle, thus making opportunity for you to shine. Remember to use everybody’s experiences as your database of wisdom, and not just your own. Health will benefit from outdoor activities and meditation. Finances will be good. Do indulge yourself occasionally.

GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): July will be highly satisfying in a lot of ways. Be alert that you will need to be compassionate towards others who are not having as good a time. Make space for variety, even if you have not asked for it. Your quick wit will be quite useful most days. Health will benefit from regular exercise. Finances will remain stable. CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): July will need you to rely on people you trust for wisdom about how to handle things. Eventually, your intuition will prove very helpful, but try to take action with reliable consensus, rather than going it alone. Health will benefit from regular exercise, both physical and mental. Finances will be fairly well.

LIBRA

(September 23rd-October 22nd):

July’s challenges will be entertaining, and will demand your goodhumoured self to show up. You have plenty of friends in the right places, so ask for help even when you think you can handle things yourself. This is not weakness; this is showing people you appreciate their abilities. Health will benefit from being careful about your digestion. Finances will be stable.

MOHINI BASU is a Tarot Card reader, Hypnotherapist and Life Coach. She can be contacted on mohini.tarot@yahoo.com. Her website is theredfoxanddeerlady. wordpress.com.

July will bring you challenges that you are capable of sailing through. Even when things surprise you, know that your experiences are your resources, as well as everything you have already achieved. Friends of similar attitudes will be a big help. Physical activities will enhance good health. Finances will be fairly stable. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st): July will have goings-on that will interest you greatly. Also, you will be in a good place to handle most of what comes your way. However, people you interact with will now teach you more patience than you expect. Health will be good with a conscious effort to stay light both physically and mentally. Finances will be fairly good. CAPRICORN (December 22nd–January 19th): July will see you in fine fettle, and that is necessary, as a lot will be happening. Your ability to lead with a level head will save many days. Do look for wisdom in your past experiences. A job well done will be your reward. Health will be good with a bit of care about food. Finances will be good, though there will be more of necessary expenses. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): July will need you to buckle down and be focussed on your own higher ideal, at all times. A lot will seem to be happening, yet not much will be conclusive. This, too, is a necessary zone. Try to be aware of the bigger picture. Health will benefit with mindfulness practice. Finances will be fairly good. PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): July will demand a lot of patience from you, but by the end of the month, you will feel much more vindicated. Practise keeping your focus in the present moment on stressful days. Look for simple solutions to even complex situations. Call on people you think are wise. Health will benefit from sticking to the familiar routine. Finances will be stable.
