EDITOR’S NOTE

Don’t Say it- Just Do It… or Say it- So you Do It.

People are always advising people how things should be done. The one advice especially catches my attention- How one should Do things. Two sides of a Coin kind of advice. One side goes- “Don’t Say it… Just Do It” and the other side– “Say it… So you Do It.” Both make sense. But you can’t practice both. Often finding myself in the dilemma of which advice to use I decided to gather sense on the both these sides of this “Do It” coin.

Side 1: Don’t Say It.. Just Do It! Actions speak louder than words. Lets get on with what needs to be done and not talk about it. Talkers talk… Doers Do. You catch the drift. In my observation, a lot of people who go by this philosophy happen to be the quieter ones. The ones who spring out of nowhere sometimes. Having spoken to a couple of achiever friends about this I realized that they also tend to be conservative by nature. This kind of harnesses all the energy from within to reach their goal of Doing It.

Side 2: Say it… So you Do It. The second kind comes with a different philosophy. “If I say it then I am putting a pressure on myself to make sure I do it. It’s a kickstarter of sorts”, says one of my friends from the media industry. Having observed a few of the kinds who follow this philosophy, I realized that most of them come across as the fearless ones. I would classify their technique as the Red Bull drinking Restless kinds.

Editor-in-chief

Anubhav Anand @anubhavanand www.anubhavanand.com/blog Which of this is the Correct Side of the Coin? It’s a trick question. The question would be which side of the coin would YOU pick. My belief has always been to not listen to anyone about How to Do something You want to Do. While both work with the same intention of Doing It, your chances of actually Doing It will be best when you do it with your natural flow. Say It OR Don’t Say It. That’s your call. What will matter in the end if you Do It!

Warli Art A Pictorial Beauty

“These villages do not need urbanization; they need our support to retain their roots. If there could be a way to commercialize their art without hurting tradition we can do them good.

A

rt is not just a nice thing to have or do in your free time; it defines our lineage and provides an account of history to the next generation. We explored the Warli culture, one of the oldest art forms of Maharashtra and its simplicity left us in awe. Warli derives its name from one of the largest tribes found in western Maharashtra. As humans one of our strongest emotions is to empathize. I witnessed the most genuine smiles, hospitality and human spirit in this village. Warli is a pictorial language matched by rudimentary technique. Scenes portraying hunting, fishing, farming, festivals, and animals surround the central motif in these ritual paintings. You must have come across a glimpse of this art in the form of hand painted walls, table accessories and artifacts in urban homes. In order to sustain a lot of Warli artists start moving to nearby cities, this is obviously leaving the Warli tradition hollow. If the artisans have a constant source of income, they will not have to leave their villages in search of a living.

Art is never finished, only abandoned. ~ Leonardo Da Vinci

posure could help them tremendously. International fashion designers and art connoisseurs have showcased Warli art, it will be great if people from our own hood can forward and help them re-establish their art through new techniques and markets. I would like to mention an organization that has been working at the grass root level with the Warli artists. Learning Space Foundation is the vision of Mr. Nitin Orayan, his team is investing phenomenal time and effort to restore the Warli culture. http://www.learningspace.org.in. You can connect with them if you wish to visit and explore their culture. Inspite of being in such close proximity to Mumbai, Warli tribesmen shun all influences of modern urbanization. These villages do not need urbanization; they need our support to retain their roots. If there could be a way to commercialize their art without hurting tradition we can do them good. How to get there: Situated 3 hours away from Mumbai. The fastest route would be to drive to Taluka Bhiwandi via Thane and get to Ambadi Junction. A lot of tour operators organize weekend nature camps around these villages.

Neighborhood Stories

NEETA KOLHATKAR HOOD: GIRGAUM

#HooderSpeaks Each of us has a certain sense of belonging when it comes to our respective neighborhoods. Things we like, dislike, approve or disapprove – they still belong to us. We got together with various people from different walks of life to get them to share their story about their neighborhood. Here’s what it is like to see your neighborhood from someone else’s perspective.

Girgaum hooder, Neeta Kolhatkar, tells us what it’s like to live so close to the sea. A journalist by profession and co-founder of TheReportLive – Girgaum has been her home for three generations and she doesn’t plan to leave it anytime soon!

How has Girgaum neighborhood changed over the years? There has been a dynamic change in the population. Back then; there was never a dominance of any religion, except the Marathi culture. However, that has now changed. There are new people who are predominantly Jain-Marwaris, which has brought a lot of change in the food culture of the area as well. There is a vegetarian mafia-ism going on right now. Earlier there used to be many seafood and non-vegetarian joints. The whole area has compulsorily turned vegetarian, and I’m against that. It concerns me, as this is a huge change – culturally, socially and politically. And mind you, I am a vegetarian myself!

Reasons why one should move to your neighborhood – Girgaum? If you wish to be a part of #HooderSpeaks and become the voice of your neighborhood, write to us at articles@livinglocal.com and we’ll feature it! Read more such article on the Living Local app.

I live in an area where people from other parts of the city come to, to grab some time for themselves and admire the sea. Besides, my neighborhood is so well connected and centrally located too. I’m equally close to the western and central sides of the city, so close to Crawford market where you can find everything under the sun, and the best part is I’m so close to the sea.

MULCHAND DEDHIA

ANISHA MURARKA

HOOD: BANDRA

HOOD: JUHU

Juhu Hooder, Anisha Murarka, tells us what it’s like to live a stone’s throw away from everything that’s exciting in the city. “I live in a neighborhood that is close to possibly everything – From beaches and nightlife to temples and celebrities, I don’t really feel the need to step out of Juhu for anything”.

Something Juhu could borrow from another neighborhood?

Bandra hooder, Mulchand Dedhia, tells us what it’s like to live at the epicenter of Mumbai. “I’m not a typical Bandra boy, but I’ve lived here long enough to understand what it means”.

How has Bandra neighborhood changed in the last 10 years?

Not any specific neighborhood particularly, but we could definitely borrow a better sense of cleanliness and hygiene from South Bombay. Despite being such an affluent neighborhood, Juhu still lacks sanitation. Also, wider roads and more open spaces wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

I see a variety of new cafés and restaurants. The social quotient has changed dynamically. 10 years ago we didn’t have a concept of graffiti and art around. That’s changed a lot now. From street to gold – People from other parts of the city come to Bandra for every kind of shopping.

Reasons why one should move to your neighborhood – Juhu?

Reasons why one should move to your neighborhood - Bandra?

Besides the fact that the location is great, it is also much quieter in comparison to the neighboring neighborhoods. Of course we’ve got the beach and that is good enough for someone to move. Juhu is the perfect blend of a buzzing social life with room for peaceful alone time as well.

You’re right at the social epicenter. Your chances of being at close proximity to everything else are very high. In terms of overall sustainability, you get a lot more options to possibly anything in comparison to other neighborhoods. And if that’s not convincing enough, then we’ve got the most premium Bollywood actors living here!

ANIRUDDHA PATHAK HOOD: POWAI

Powai hooder, Aniruddha Pathak, tells us what it’s like to live in one of the greenest neighborhoods of the city. “I no longer feel disconnected from other parts of the city”.

How easy/difficult is it to commute from Powai? Fortunately, Powai is almost equidistant from both the highways, Eastern Express and Western Express, so one has the advantage of choosing either depending on where they are heading. On the flipside, you do have to plan your travel quite well before stepping out of the house.

Reasons why one should move to your neighborhood , Powai? Overall, Powai is a very quiet neighborhood. It is also one of the greenest ones among the others. I think it has the maximum number of trees in comparison to any other neighborhood. It is pretty socially active with very good options of food joints, shopping centers, gardens and parks, fitness centers and outdoor activities.

T

he only vast expanse of green in the concrete jungle of Sanjay Gandhi National Park is the bustling untamed life of animals living in peace in their natural environment. And one of the main things that people would go to see is the Kanheri caves and Tulsi Lake. In order to reach these places, there are well-constructed roads that must be followed. However, very few people know about another section of the caves that isn’t connected by the roadways. Secondly, the route to Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lake was recently closed due to possible animal sightings. Whatever the officials have you believe, these areas are still very much accessible, you just need to be up for getting your legs mucky and wet. Off the map of SGNP, there are numerous brooks and streams trailing off into different directions of the park. 3 such paths were verified by unnamed adventure lovers and plotted on the map. Though these paths may look closed, it is a safe way through the foliage that leads to these unmarked spots. It may be slightly unsafe to travel these parts, as the officials have been unable to actually mark them off and keep any individual to track a hiker who gets lost in the forest. Not can there is any as-

sured safety from wild animals, neither like wild boars and others nor from reptiles and insects like poisonous snakes, spiders and the like. Though these paths promise a fun filled journey and true adventure it is only advised for the daring with proper tracking equipment so that in case you do get lost you have some way to contact the forest officials to come rescue you. You may encounter some tribals or locals in the forest or if you’ve been walking long enough in the right direction you may reach the outskirts of Aarey milk colony, which is on the other side of the forest. The red lines indicating the trails on the map may not be the most accurate because we only used a compass and a picture of the map. So if you do plan to go exploring make sure you have a compass and know how to use it. And in case of the occasion you do get lost follow the river downstream because most of them end up either at the Borivali entrance of SGNP or else the Tulsi Lake. Take note that if you are caught on the path to Tulsi Lake or anywhere in the unauthorized part of the forest, the officials can heavily fine you. Apart from that, have a great time and make more memories!

INITIATIVE

Paper over Plastic with Plastic Free Powai

W

e have been so accustomed to living life around plastic, that the thought of not having it around might seem unrealistic and equally difficult. Did you think something as basic as plastic could be replaceable? Plastic not only harms the environment but also has a long-term aftermath that we are beginning to ignore. To bring back the consciousness of eliminating plastic from the face of this planet, a local initiative is doing wonders to make a fraction of their contribution to this global issue. Plastic Free Powai, an initiative started in Powai, is picking up pace with respect to what they aim to achieve. Amidst much large-scale environmental problems to overcome, we forget to address the smaller issues such as the reckless usage of plastic bags. One day, these small issues will begin to magnify and it will be extremely difficult to overlook it.

for the entire neighbor-

Failing to acknowledge this issue at the initial stage, has led to the impetuous use of plastic bags a little more than it should have been. It’s easy to tackle this problem – Stop using plastic bags, you would say. What happens then? Like everything else in nature, you need a better-suited replacement to eradicate the problem completely. Plastic Free Powai not only works towards eliminating the use of plastic bags, but also help in replacing it’s need by providing paper bags to shopkeepers at a cheaper cost than what they have been buying plastic bags for.

tainable, something that involves the participation of the entire community and provides a solution to this problem, and at the same time, acts as an adhesive for the entire neighborhood”, says founder of Plastic Free Powai initiative, Shlok Babu. The plan of action started with a few friends coming together, recognizing the problem and looking for a practical solution for it. An integral part of this initiative is the raddi collection drive, wherein residents of Powai provide raddi i.e. old newspapers and magazines, which are used to make these paper bags. “When I speak to people in my neighborhood, I want them to say that a part of Plastic Free Powai belongs to them as well, because they contributed their raddi for free to help make those paper bags. If everyone in the community follows this mindset, we can see a total transformation of the neighborhood within no time”, says Babu. Besides a group of teenagers, MP Poonam Mahajan has been a pillar of support to this organization and has helped it become what it is today. With an aim of making the entire city plastic free, this is their first step towards their larger goal. Plastic Free Powai is not just an initiative, but a model that can be adopted and implemented in other parts of the city. Giving up plastic should not be difficult when one has a more sustainable alternative that will not only benefit the environment but also be the most doable action that will make the most impact. Join the movement!
