MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 MOTHER..... Nature Humans have made technological advancements in each and every field known to mankind. From imaginable to unimaginable feats, we have crossed all barriers and nothing seems to be impossible for the human race. Yet, every now and then we are humbled by the power of Nature. The recent tragedy that hit Nepal not only shook our neighboring nation but also each one of us. Pictures of the devastation seen on every social media platform and news channels bringing us once again face to face with the reality of our helplessness in front of the Might of Nature. People from different parts of the world get together to extend their help to the victims and the people suffering in this tragedy. My question is that why only in the time of extreme events is the human race seeing joining hands. If we are to believe the age-old law – “All things are a result of Cause and Effect”, then we need to seriously look into the Cause. Are we responsible for messing with Mother Nature in some way for it to cause the natural calamities? If we are in some way, then why don’t we join hands stopping the Cause? Why wait to come together as one during the Effect?

Editor-in-chief Anubhav Anand

As we enter this month when Mothers Day is celebrated all across the globe, why don’t we look a little deeper into the word Mother. Nature has been called Mother Nature. Our land of birth is called Mother Land. The selfless nature of Mother desires nothing in return but Respect and Love. That should take care of most of it right? Let’s look beyond the Hallmark effect of Mothers Day, beyond the social media forwards on whatsapp and facebook and twitter claiming our never-ending love for our Mother. Let’s look a little deeper into the meaning of the word that is the beginning of all things in the name of Life.

FASHION TIPS FOR YOUR BODY SHAPE

“The human body is the best work of art.” Jess C. Scott

by Gauri Gupta

Most of us desire to look attractive. But it’s not really a “by-chance” encounter that we may often assume. Looking attractive takes effort and knowledge on ones part. There is no such thing that it will just come to you. There is a lot of thought that goes into it as well. It is essential to be aware of your body shape. One has to dress in clothes that flatter your body. Your friend’s body type may be different that yours so the same clothes that make her attractive may not do justice to your body type. Hence, one needs to know how to choose clothes that fit you well and make you appear balanced and beautiful.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR BODY SHAPE IS ESSENTIAL

It empowers you with a skill to recognize clothing styles that naturally flatter the attractive parts of you and cover the less attractive in order to create an attractive silhouette and create the illusion of an ideal figure. There are the SIX main body shape types: Triangle shape, Inverted triangle shape, rectangle shape, hourglass shape, diamond shape and the rounded shape. 10

TRIANGLE BODY SHAPE Bottom heavy, bigger around the hips, narrow shoulders, probably fairly flat stomach. Emphasis is on the lower torso. Body lines are with straighter upper body and curved lower body. BRING OUT THE BEST if you have this body shape by balancing your curvy bottom half with bold bright tops. Wear garments to emphasize your waist. Skirts and dresses that are straight or slightly MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

flared. Wear accessories to draw attention to your upper body. Maxi dresses will be your best friend as they hide your hips while making your top half look great.
A great pair of heels will always elongate your legs and make your lower half appear leaner. BEST TO AVOID-Tube pencil skirts, tight fitted skirts, and very loose garments, garments that add bulk to hips like raw silk. If you are wearing a salwar kur-

HOURGLASS BODY SHAPE Blessed with nice and a rare shape so don’t go for overly sexy look or too baggy-unless that’s the look you are going for! Women with this shape are average in height and weight, have full -rounded bodylines, with proportionally larger shoulders, bust hips and buttocks and a small waist. Bodylines are curved.

INVERTED TRIANGLE SHAPE Bigger on the top having broad shoulders and sometimes a big bust, often the hips are slim along with bottom. Body lines are with curved upper body and straighter lower body. BRING OUT THE BEST by wearing pieces on the bottom that are fuller. Flowing skirts wide leg trousers and denim and also bright colors on the bottom. V-neck should be filling your closet as they counter your broad shoulder and create a balanced outfit. BEST TO AVOID-Stay away from anything that makes your shoulder look wider such as puffy sleeved tops, lot of ruffles and sleeveless tops. In salwar suits avoid bold patterns on the upper part of the body. No heavy accessories and design details around the neck/chest area. RECTANGULAR BODY SHAPE is also called a ruler shape because of the

ta, avoid short kurta’s, patiala salwar’s, as it adds visual weight. Avoid anything with side pockets.

straight lines. This shape is the easiest type to dress, as most clothes fit them and most styles will suit them. Rectangular body shape lacks curves (chest, waist, hips and bottoms),which may make them look less feminine. BRING OUT THE BEST by wearing semi-fitted clothes, belt to emphasize the waist. Shoulder pads to emphasize your shoulders-they shouldn’t be too large and not visible. If you have firm upper arms, short sleeves and sleeve-less tops and dresses.

BRING OUT THE BEST-Wear wrap dresses, waist-clinching belts. Soft clingy flowing fabrics, straight and gently flared pants. Play up your classic curves and small waist. BEST TO AVOID-Very bulky fabrics as it would hide the curves. Avoid very loose styles in tops and kurta, very high necklines (unless you have a small bust). Avoid tapered pants.

BEST TO AVOID-No sheath dresses; low-rise jeans and trousers will make you look too long. No clingy fabrics that stick to your body, very loose fitting tops or pants. In salwar kurta, avoid fitted suits, as it would highlight the body shape.

DIAMOND BODY SHAPE The hips are wider and the bust and shoulder have a full midsection. One tends to gain weight on the stomach and hips and the waist is not defined. Arms are slender. Bodylines with rounded midbody.

BRING OUT THE BEST by balancing your bust and shoulders with your hips creating a waist. Try to look for clothes that add curves to your upper body and choose skirts that will lengthen your lower body. Wear tops with belted waist, wide V or U neck, or off the shoulder tops. Choose trousers with simple back and hip pockets and A-line skirts. Wear necklaces or earrings to draw attention towards your shoulders and face. BEST TO AVOID-Tucked -in- tops, pleated pants and skirts as they carry extra visual weight around the waist area. Narrow or tapered skirts and pants. Low waist pants. Avoid clingy fabrics that stick to your body.

ROUND BODY SHAPE You have an appearance of being round, slightly wide around the waistline, it lacks or has no waist definition. This is one of the most difficult body types to dress but can be easily camouflaged. This shape has a waist that is the largest part of their body, but often have slim arms and legs.

12

BRING OUT THE BEST by emphasizing your best features. Show-off your legs, arms, collarbones, whatever your best features are. Wear empire waist shirts that begin at the bust and go away from the stomach. Always wear foundation garments to make your body look smooth and hold in your stomach. A-line or empire dresses work well for round body shape as they hide your waistline but help you to show off your other assets. BEST TO AVOID- Trousers and pants that are extremely tailored or tight. Avoid skinny jeans and avoid mini skirts even if you have great legs because this will make one look top heavy.

NOTE Our body type often changes overtime. Whether the change is due to childbirth, weight loss or weight gain. Be prepared for little variations in your body shape and adjust your style needs appropriately. Remember to have fun with your body type and always wear clothes that make you comfortable. It is essential not to forget your personal style while choosing an outfit. Always communicate confidence by practicing good posture. The way you carry yourself tells others a lot about how you feel. Ignore the social and cultural influences that cause you to feel dissatisfied with your body. Don’t let trends sweep you into making bad choices for your body shape. Always trust your inner instinct about what you can or cannot wear, based on your experience. Lastly, recognize figure variations as something to work with. We have the tools! This guidance leads to self-acceptance, self-appreciation and self-confidence.

CLOTHES COMMUNICATE! www.shutterstock.com/ Karkas

www.shutterstock.com/ Kiselev Subbotina Anna

by Priya Kanakia

Throughout academics we are taught to read, write, speak; but is that enough? I sincerely doubt that.

Once we’re exposed to the real world, one realizes that there is a different language that people speak. It’s a language about which most aren’t aware of – but we all have been making use of it! It’s a mode of communication which is more prudent and penetrating in our daily social interactions! It’s called “Visual Communication.” Even before uttering a word, we communicate 90% of who we are via ‘Visual Image.’ It’s a silent form of communication occurring on a very unconscious level. Visual image is your impression on the minds of people. It’s nothing but the way the person perceives you! It’s like your Visual resume. So, the way this works is – humans have a photographic memory; which means, we continuously click photographs of everything we come across and store it in our memory. This is why 14

faces are easily remembered as compared to names. Now these photographs are clicked within 3-5 seconds of meeting a person (think how much time you took back then, to decide whether your neighbor is sweet or annoying.) This is called a First Impression; which can never be made again; can only be altered. A ‘First Impression’ has the potential to make or break deals. As a part of our lifestyle, we meet various individuals each day. As a home-maker you may want to be influential for your child, relatives, other parents or PTA team at school. Likewise, if you’re a college student then peers, teachers, Hr of some company. Similarly, if you’re an entrepreneur or a professional you are entrusted with the job to handle different people from diverse backgrounds. Visual Communications applies to one and all. MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

It’s unavoidable as social interaction is an essential part of human race. There are three distinct elements to Visual Image, which are:1. Clothing, including accessories 2. Personal Grooming, and 3. Body Language Together, these elements create a unique and memorable “YOU.” In this article, I’m specifically going to concentrate on the importance & impact of Clothing on your Visual Image. Often you may be picking up garments and accessories that are fascinating due to its styling or because of the latest fashion trend. Sure they are attractive and in vogue. But in daily life you never end up wearing all of that & then you feel you’re

Let’s look at this in depth. Lifestyle means where you live, the way you live, work you do, roles you play, goals you have for yourself, occasions that you attend. Often a person is not able to portray one’s core, as 3-5 seconds is too less time as we barely get chance to speak. But what if your choice of clothing can portray ‘you’ to people around you? Communicating your intent and ideas/thoughts will become so much easier, right? We, assist you to create a Personal Style which is very unique and makes a statement about you. A dress that looks amazing on a mannequin may not look that great on you. While following latest fashion makes you just another face in the crowd! But have you speculated if it matches your body type and your personal Color or no. And I agree there is lots of information on the internet; but nothing is in store for Indian Clothing,

Indian Bodies or Indian Skin Color. These solutions can be provided to you only by a professional Image Consultant. Clothes are a part of who you are. It speaks everything about who you are. A person with really shabby dressing will surely be adjudged as unorganized or lazy, right? This is just an extreme example but unconsciously you are also giving out messages by your appearance - they speak of “Who You Are.” Besides, isn’t it logical to dress what portrays us? Every fine detail of your attire is a cue. A pin-striped shirt v/s polka dotted shirt. A Large chunky neck-piece v/s a pearl necklace. Flowery dress v/s animal print dress v/s neon dress. While there are other elements that fall in between and have messages embedded in them. Many are unaware of ‘What’, ‘When’ and ‘Where’ to wear! Our lifestyle and profession expects us to be dressed a particular way, like that of a Doctor. Don’t you expect your family doctor not to be in their sweats at work? Similarly, it applies to you too, but many aren’t even aware. It’s off-late that cloth-

MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

ing became a casual thing after the jeans revolution in the early 90’s. After which personal identity and productivity started going down. As everyone started wearing jeans and started looking alike. And when we look alike, we feel alike and act alike. We lost variety, individuality and personal style. My reason for writing this article is that we must pay heed to what we wear. That creates your first impression. That’s the real you. It speaks about you. It’s your identity. It reflects your attitude, values, morals and manners. It separates you from the crowd. It influences people around you. It also buys you respect. And no one other than an Image Consultant can guide you find the ‘REAL YOU.’

Energize Your Kids This Summer by Lifestyle Nutrition Consultant Tripti Gupta

Summer time is fun time, vacations, friends and free play keep our children pleasantly occupied but the flip side also brings plenty of unhealthy indulging. Lazy activities such as watching TV, sitting on the Internet, chatting on the phone and also the frequent holidays and outings tend to attract a lot of outside eating which mostly means junk. This vacation let’s teach our kids some life’s lessons. Instead of unhealthy indulging, get them to write a secret diet diary or create a healthy recipe which makes them naturally health conscious the fun way. Why do we need to? Childhood obesity, low appetite and immunity, poor concentration power in exams, restlessness, stunted growth and much more are simple symptoms which stem from poor nourishment. The biggest mistake we make is, underestimating our child’s ability to incorporate. At an early age children learn better to adapt and follow with much more ease and discipline than any of us, they only need to be trained in the right way. Why NOW, my child can shed off the excess weight when he grows up? Let’s understand the simple science of fat within our bodies. Fat cells also known as adipose cells in our body, increase in size when we grow fat. Overeating, indulging in high calorie foods etc. causes this excess food to store as fat in these adipose cells, which is a condition also known as Hyperplasia. This means increase in your

fat cell size. That’s when our inches increase and we are FAT. These same cells shrink in size when we lose fat and our inches go back to what they were. This holds true for all of us, However, in children, right up to the age of puberty the same fat cells grow in two ways. The adipose cells not only increase in size causing Hyperplasia but after reaching a certain size they explode to multiply in number, a condition which is known as Hypertrophy. The same fat cells here are growing in two ways now, size and number. The size of these cells will shrink once they lose fat but the number of cells remains where they are making their weight loss a challenge in their grown up years. These are the children who tend to have much more difficulty as 35+ adults in losing weight and tend to fight more medical conditions such as fatty liver, cholesterol etc. compared to the healthy leaner kids. COMMON MYTHS Myth 1– Children can digest everything, they can eat anything. Fact – Cholesterol in children accumulates from the age of 2 yrs., that extra mayo, ghee and cheese are causing more damage than nourishment. Bad cholesterol does not accumulate overnight. Saturated fats should be minimized; instead a handful of mixed nuts would be sufficient to provide the healthy fats your child may MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

need to grow. Myth 2- Extra Cream, whole fat milk and Ghee are for kids, if they don’t eat then who will? Fact – If your child is a poor eater and underweight the fact is that the extra ghee is providing quick satiety killing the appetite of your child. If the child is good eater and overweight, then he doesn’t need extra he only needs a fine balance. In both cases, WE DON’T NEED EXCESS. Refer to your food pyramid before you make the blunder. Myth 3- They are too young to follow a proper diet Fact 3- The parents mindset is the bigger concern, train your kid to follow a normal healthy wholesome meal as a routine and nothing stops them from adapting to it for LIFE. Don’t push your own mindsets on the kids, they are willing, the question is ARE YOU? Realizing the importance of good nutrition for your child from the beginning is your first step towards their healthy future. Just the way we are careful about our young ones washing their hands before they eat, it is extremely important to monitor WHAT is going inside their bodies. You may not be able to control their intake always, so why not teach them the WHY’s & HOW’s from the beginning and train them for life. Gift your child a disease free life, the right time to begin is NOW, let’s energize. 17

Money Mantra for New Financial Year

www.shutterstock.com/ isak55

The Financial year comes to an end with a hectic process of preparing balance sheet and income statement and filing of income tax returns. The end of the financial year happens to be an extremely busy period. It marks the advent of a new financial year, new projects, revised budgets and new business plans. It is also an opportune time for us to embark on financial planning for the year ahead.

So let us start our new financial year with the seven money mantras to achieve financial freedom: 1. DEFINE OR REDEFINE YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS:

2. ENSURE THAT YOUR EMERGENCY FUNDS ARE IN PLACE:

3. CHECK IF YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE IS ADEQUATE

As lifestyles and aspirations change, financial goals change. For example, a family may want to send their children abroad for studies. This aspect may not have figured in their financial planning for the previous year. It is therefore critical to look at each of your financial goals and reevaluate them, visa-vis the time frame to achieve a goal.

As the last quarter of the financial year tends to be heavy on taxes for a large number of people, you may have to draw from your emergency fund. It is critical to rebuild the fund. Having a contingency fund that lasts for at least three months and can be accessed easily is crucial.

It is imperative to ensure that your risk coverage is adequate and covers most situations that can affect your personal finances. Thus, it is important to evaluate whether the life cover that you have is adequate, your family is adequately covered by health insurance, your vehicle insurance is in place and assets such as property are protected. As life insurance premium costs have fallen over a period of time, it would be a good idea to evaluate if you still have the most efficient life insurance coverage. With enhanced tax deductions on health insurance premium, it will be prudent to have a tax-friendly policy.

18

MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

A clearly defined set of financial goals for a family is as important as a clearly articulated business strategy for your profession. It ensures that your resources, i.e. your personal finances, are clearly aligned to deliver on your objectives. Your choice of asset class and asset mix can be determined accordingly. For example, if your goals are long term, i.e. more than seven years away, you can have more growth assets in your portfolio such as equities and real estate. However, if your goals are short-term, having more defensive assets such as bonds, deposits and fixed income-oriented instruments will make more sense.

Lifestyle

4. ALIGN YOUR INVESTMENT STRATEGYWITH YOURFINANCIAL GOALS

6. KEEP TAXES IN MIND WHILE BUILDING YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO: 5. ENSURE THAT YOU ARE KEEPING YOUR LOANS FOR THE RIGHT REASONS: Many a times, the loan repayment amount can be more than the returns assured on the investment portfolio. It is critical to evaluate that the interest you will pay on your loan in the long-term is less than the earnings on your investment portfolio. If that is not the case, consider prepaying your loans.

It is crucial to keep in mind that there are certain tax advantages available on certain types of investments. For instance, the National Pension Scheme (NPS) has a separate tax deduction available from financial year 2015-16. However, investments must not be solely guided by their tax benefits or efficiency; they must be in line with your financial goals. Saving systematically from the beginning of the financial year brings in discipline in spending and saving.

7. INVEST IN YOURSELF:

Remember that your profession and your job are the drivers of wealth creation. Above everything else, make sure that you are investing in yourself-financially, physically, intellectually and spiritually. A brand New Year is has begun. Hope you are ready for more great experiences and adventures!

Latest infertility treatment techniques www.shutterstock.com/ Maksim Shmeljov

Infertility, not just a disorder but also a social embarrassment for a couple, especially for a woman in our society. The couple is ready to go for everything logical or illogical to hear the precious sentence “ Congratulations!!! You are pregnant.” That is where is the role of an infertologist, tirelessly working for improving the outcome of the treatment efforts. The era has progressed over a period of years from simple treatment of planned relations & intrauterine insemination [IUI] to the advanced technologies of IVF, ICSI & now IMSI & Embryoscope. IVF is the procedure of putting eggs & sperms together in a lab which leads to the process of fertilization in vitro [means outside the body] & formation of embryos. These embryos are then delicately instilled in the cavity of uterus to implant. Successful implantation leads to “conception”.

ICSI [intracytoplasmic sperm injection] is the process of picking up the sperm & injecting into the oocyte. This is again proved to be a boon for males with very low sperm counts [total motile sperm count of < 1 million], morphologically abnormal sperms, poor fertilization in IVF & in cases when the sperms are retrieved through testicular biopsy. The success rate of IVF / ICSI treatment depends upon quality of sperms, eggs, embryos & receptivity of uterus. The advanced version of ICSI, is IMSI [intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection]. This is a real fine technology in which the image of sperm is magnified 6600 times helping the embryologist to select a morphologically normal sperm for injection into the oocyte. This obviously leads to a better success rate in cases of low count & abnormal sperms. It also leads to fall in rate of abortions. In cases of advanced maternal age & repeated IVF failures one of the factor responsible is thick shell of an embryo, which prevents it from hatching out. For this problem we have got the solution in the form of laser assisted hatching. 22

Though not advised in all the cases, it is found to improve the success rates in indicated cases. Cryopreservation is another breakthrough in history if ART [Assisted reproductive technology]. It involves preservation of extra embryos for future use. It really a dream comes true for infertologists as well as the patients. This makes it possible to preserve the precious extra embryos formed in the process of IVF & use them for further transfers in cases of failure. Not only that but it has also lead to prevention of risk of hyperstimulation by deferring embryo transfer in suspected cases & saves the overall IVF treatment cost. In expert hands the embryo recovery & pregnancy rates are really phenomenal. Embryoscope? Now everybody has heard of stethoscope to laparoscope. But what is embryoscope? It is an advanced incubator system which monitors the stages of development & growth of an embryo. This helps the embryologist & clinician in making a better choice of embryo for transfer. Ultimately the better quality means better probability of success. MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

It is useful for cases of recurrent unsuccessful IVF attempts. Last but obviously not the least is PGS [preimplantation genetic screening] technology. It is taking a biopsy of embryo & doing genetic testing to rule out the genetic abnormalities in the respective embryo; So that the embryo with abnormal genetics can be identified & eliminated from the process of embryo transfer. Definitely a technique with high level specificity & utility in indicated cases of recurrent IVF failures as well as abortions. We also expect many other innovations in near future as the research process in continuously going on. A number of expert brains & hands are working hard to fulfill the endless desires of good hearts which beat every moment for well being of humanity. Just waiting for blessings of god to bring it to the reality. article by: Dr Nandita Palshetkar M.D. ,F.C.P.S., F.I.C.O.G. Infertility Specialist

In opposition, cooling down has the effect of returning the blood back to the heart rather than allowing it to pool in the exercised muscles, which helps in returning the heart rate back to normal. In addition it helps in reducing lactic acid levels and ensures that the vital organs

2. Being over zealous Being enthusiastic to exercise and to reach your goal is a positive attitude. But don’t let it get the best of you, as with all the adrenaline pumping through your veins you tend to ignore your limitations, whereas the purpose of exercises is to overcome your limitations. This is possible by letting your systems adapt to the challenge progressively and not forcing the change upon a system, which is not prepared to handle it. So take your eyes off the heavier weights or the kilometers indicator on the cardio machines and give time. Judge for yourself- Are you there yet? 3. Lifting too much or too little Either of these extreme measures isn’t going to fetch you desired results. Keep aside the condescending attitude and lower down the weights if you need to. Instead it would be wiser to increase the number of repetitions or sets with the same amount of weights. This will

prevent your muscle fibers from undue overload. On the contrary if you are lifting lightweights, you might as well put them aside as they will prove to be nothing more than a waste of your time and render your efforts wasted. So the key is to strike the right balance between doing what you are capable of and loading the muscles with right amount of weight. 4. Improper management of rest interval While it is important to allot a stipulated amount of time for various exercises it is also important to know when to stop and take adequate rest intervals in between. Instead of taking longer or shorter breaks change the tempo of your exercise for better results. For instance, while doing Biceps curls lower the weight slowly (enhanced eccentric load) and lift it with a strong and controlled contraction (concentric load). This is very motivating as you can see your muscle working and will help you pump your guns without unprecedented damage.

It is popularly known that if you are working your calories off to get those cuts and abs without following a designed diet plan, you are wasting your time. Diet and exercise are two sides of the same coin. So let your exercise regimen to be aided by your diet plan. Apart from this remember to keep yourself adequately hydrated at all times. Avoid working out on an empty stomach or heavy meals.

Apart from this there are numerous exercises where you can go wrong. Hence we conclude that if you carry out exercises with a scientific approach you can keep uninvited injuries at bay and focus on gain not pain. Another important fact to remember is that if you develop any injury, you should immediately visit an expert in exercise science - A Physiotherapist. health myths you shouldn’t believe

(BPT) - Separating fact from fiction can be difficult, especially when it comes to information about your health. Cutting through the Internet clutter and opinions from friends to uncover the truth is key to keeping the mind and body well. Dr. Jennifer Johnson, naturopathic doctor at Bastyr University School of Naturopathic Medicine, offers her expert insight into five of the most common health myths.

Myth 1: Omega-3 fatty acids increase the risk of prostate cancer. A new study does not support the reported association between omega-3 fatty acids and the risk of prostate cancer put forth by a widely publicized 2013 study. By disputing these findings, the new study reaffirms that men can safely consume omega-3 fatty acids from dietary sources, or from supplements, and continue to reap the substantial health benefits of 26

omega-3s. Learn more about the study at http://goo.gl/mwKSMM. “Omega-3 fatty acids are vital to our health. They work to help lower inflammation, reduce risk of developing cardiovascular disease, lower triglycerides and blood pressure, and have overall positive effects on immune and brain function,” says Johnson. “The recent meta-analysis with respect to prostate health and fish oil does in fact show that men who take fish oil, either from dietary sources or supplements, are at no increased risk for MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

prostate cancer.” Johnson stresses that there is no known mechanism by which omega-3 fatty acids would increase the risk of prostate cancer. To the contrary, there is research suggesting that omega-3 fatty acids might inhibit prostate cancer cell growth.

If you’re like many people, you reach for a bottle of vitamin C at the first sign of a cold. This is a good choice, as vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that boosts the immune system to fight off infection when you are sick. However, while vitamin C is a good option for treating a cold, it does not work to prevent colds before onset. “Vitamin C has been shown to reduce the length of colds and can help treat symptoms,” says Johnson. “Though beneficial and quite safe, vitamin C has not been found to consistently prevent colds. If you do start to feel the sniffles, supplement with 500-1000 mg/ day.”

Myth 5: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Apples are a good source of antioxidants and beta-carotene, which are very beneficial for overall health. They are also fiber rich, which promotes gut health. But apples are just one of many effective ways to fend off a visit to the doctor. “First, sleeping enough sets the stage for good health, as sleep is the time for repair,” says Johnson. “Additionally, managing stress helps the immune system function best. When the body perceives stress, immune function goes down. Stress is normal, but having a balanced life will always promote health. Rest, exercise, keeping hydrated, maintaining a positive attitude and eating a balanced diet of whole foods is the true Rx for health.

Myth 3: Everyone should take a multivitamin each day. Vitamins and minerals play a vital role in the normal functioning of our bodies, from skin and bone development, to brain and heart function. However, research is inconsistent when it comes to multivitamins so an individualized approach is best. “One size does not fit all,” says Johnson. “Adding in all those nutrients in often a fairly low dose may not provide enough therapeutic benefit to help any one problem. To really target your health concerns using vitamins, see your health care provider to determine if there is a vitamin/mineral recommendation that is just right for you. Better yet, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables will provide your body with compounds and nutrients that truly do benefit the body.”

Myth 4: Most people get adequate vitamin D through diet. “Vitamin D is essential for bone health, and the actions of vitamin D are considered hormonal. This means that this compound truly has far-reaching effects on the body and has been shown to support immune function and improve mood,” says Johnson. “Studies show that this ‘sunny vitamin’ may also help to prevent cancer.” When the skin is directly exposed to sunlight, vitamin D synthesis begins, explains Johnson. In order for enough vitamin D to be produced, the skin would have to be in direct sunlight most days for 20 minutes, which most people do not experience consistently. “Supplements are a good option for getting adequate vitamin D, but make sure to check with your doctor for proper dosage. I suggest the natural vitamin D3 form,” says Johnson.

Local Boy shows That with Discipline, Hard-Work and Dedication anything is possible. 34

ryan comes from a family of swimmers. His great grand father Mr. MAGGAR SINGH was a swimmer; his father Mr. Surjeet Singh won various medals in breaststroke and free style at the club level. Swimming is in the genes of Aryan.

Aryan Singh Dadiala attributes his achievements to the support and motivation from “The Celebration Sports Club” managing committee, specially Mr. Hemant Nair, who has been very supportive, the coach Mr. Subodh Danke and Mr. Rahul Chiplunker, both have put in lots of hard work and energy to bring Aryan up to the level that he is today. Also all the support and cooperation that they got from the school “JAMNABAI NARSEE SCHOOL” and its principal Mrs. Sudeshna Chatterjee. “The school goes out of way to support the children who are interested in sports”, says the father. Resident of Lokhandwala, Andheri West, we spoke to the father and the son about Aryans journey from an over-weight kid to a disciplined fourteen old with the desire to be India’s Michael Phelp. Chat with Aryan

What would you suggest other parents who feel that school education and good marks are the only important thing in their child’s life? Today things have changed. Parents are more open and welcome new and innovative ideas. Studies are important, so is sports. Any sport is must for a child. Today it’s become our life style. With the eating habits and study pattern, we burden our children. Sports / physical activity stimulates growth and leads to improve physical and emotional health of a child. Sports help children to develop not only physical but also socially and psychologically.

When did you discover your love for swimming? I used to swim since age of 3 years, but that was only for leisure. I started participating in swimming competition only after age of 8 years (and won couple of medals) but was not serious about swimming. I discovered my love for swimming at the age of 11, when I started winning medals back to back in every competition I participated, without professional coaching.

Aryan’s timetable is jam-packed. To keep him disciplined, focused, motivated what advice do you give your son? Yes Aryan’s schedule is very jam packed, but this child is blessed, the harder the routine we set for him he works more hard. I am blessed to have a child like Aryan, many time I am not able to get up at 4:30 am, he get up on his own packs his bag, will prepare his own shake, and pack other vitamins and then wake me at 5:00 am “ DAD ITS TIME TO GO” I just have to say that God bless him. In case he cannot become a great swimmer I am 100% sure that he will become a good human being with the kind of routine, discipline the child is following and his focus. Whenever he is low he looks upon me and I feel that the time I have play a part of a friend not father or a coach or trainer. I always tell him one thing that in life don’t be afraid of a failure. How have you as parents made an effort to keep away the influence of television, video games, internet.. etc. so that Aryan can focus on other important things in life.. and go out and play. To be very frank we have not done anything. It’s his schedule and his love for swimming. He is very focused.

How and when did it become a habit and a regime for you? At the age 12 i.e. June 2013 I joined professional training under Coach Mr. Subhode Danke and Mr. Rahul Chiplunkar. They worked very hard on me. After that there was no looking back as I started competing with children who participated for states and national and were training for past 6/7 years, then swimming became a habit for me. Who inspires you? I was inspired by my dad coz I use to see him swimming non-stop 30 to 40 laps. As a child I was very much inspired and always wanted to do the same. But today my inspiration and idol is Michael Phelps, the world’s fastest swimmer and if God blesses I will break his record. What inspires you? The hard work and the dedication that my parents put on me, inspires me. What other activities do you like (outdoors and indoors)? Other outdoors activities - I love playing football, last year in 2014 represented my school as a captain in few matches in MSSA and MARCOS QUAY and won Bronze medal for the team. When ever I get time playing cricket/ badminton with my friends, if no one is around I go far a run/ jogging coz that’s part of my dry land training (I like sprinting).

Indoor – chess, reading books and when ever I get little time on Sundays I play PS3. Does Swimming help you focus better on your studies? I think that getting into any sports means lots hard work, dedication and a fixed schedule to follow. Before swimming there was no fix routine. I use to eat any time, sleep late, get glued to Television set, laptop, video games…etc. But after getting into swimming I have a fixed schedule for the whole week. Yes, It has helped me concentrate more in studies, coz now I am more focused and give quality time to studies and scoring better marks then ever before. Most young kids today spend countless hours sitting and staring at computer, cell phone, television screens. How do you draw a line, and lead such a disciplined life?

36

Today’s advance technology has made video games, movies…etc easier and more accessible than ever before. It’s not that I never did all this, but today due to my fixed and busy schedule I am more focused on my swimming. My advice to all my friends is that go out and play any outdoor games, feel the fresh air, go to the beach play football, run or just play in water its awesome. It is okay with me, the kind of life style I am following as I truly have a love for swimming and it’s my passion. You have a very focused and rigid training regime? At times when you feel like slacking or being lazy, what is it that makes you shake it off and stick to the schedule? Yes I agree that I have a very focused and rigid training regime, but it’s not only me, my other swimmer friends even they too

MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

follow the same regime. There’s a very old saying “NO PAIN NO GAIN”. At times I do feel tired and lazy, that the time my dad come into action, he is my motivation, he never lets me down, whether I win or loss, in fact when I am low he praises me more and gives me inspirational speech. He tell me “Don’t be afraid of failing, try, if you don’t succeed, try again hard, If you don’t succeed, try harder and keep trying till you get on the top”. Life is not about how hard you can hit, but it is all about how hard you can get hit and still stand strong to face it again. What are the favorites hangout places/ places to chill for kids your age in Andheri west? Cinemax, Mega Mall turf. Oye Teri a restaurant that serves special LOW FAT grill chicken and fish with high protein.

wealth and Olympics 2020

You have participated in the International Stuttgart Swimming Championship in Germany last year. This year you have been selected for the 40th International Swimming Competition to be held in June in Germany. Any difference you see in the Indian kids (swimmers) and kids from other parts of the world? Yes there’s lot of difference the physical appearance and structure are far huge then us. The facilities that are provided to these swimmers are in no comparison, what we receive. The swimmers from other part of the world are very good and it is difficult to reach their records but not impossible.

As a child, I was very chubby and my parents didn’t know what to do, at time I use to eat 3 to 4 burgers in a row, but swimming not only helped me cut down all my fat, but it made me more focus, responsible – coz today I know how much hard work and effort my Coach’s, parents have taken for me. They kept their priority behind and concentrated on me to achieve my dream.

Book Reading session by author Shunali Khullar Shroff – ‘ Battle Hymn of a Bewildered Mother’

Any thing you would like to say to the other kids out there who spend less time doing outdoor activities?

When I grow up I want to become a fastest swimmer and represent my country (INDIA) in the Asian games, commonwealth and Olympics 2020

Where is your favorite place to train for swimming? Celebration sports club in Lokhandwala is the place where I learned to swim and it’s a boon to all the people of Lokhandwala and Tata Swimming Pool at Chembur (Trombay) these are two place is love to swim.

The most important advice your coaches give you? My coaches always tell me that training is very important but eating right food and proper rest is equally important.

Mumbai, 24th April 2015 : Fort, Kitab Khana witnessed the book reading of author Shunali Khullar Shroff’s debut book ‘Battle Hymn of a Bewildered Mother’. The book reading session began with a panel discussion by freelance writer and a schoolgate mother as she is fondly called, Kiran Manral. Amongst the favourite mothers of Bollywood, the session also witnessed actor and mothers Tara Sharma and Perizaad Zorabian. The session was filled with laughter when author Shunali read a few pages from her book. The extracts she read from the book were one of her own experiences Perizaad and Tara Sharma joined in the bonhomie and recalled their experiences fondly. The book launch was attended by both mothers and fathers of young children, to be mothers and a bunch of book enthusiasts. ‘Battle Hymn of a bewildered Mother’ is just not another run-of-the-mill parenting book, in fact it is opposite of everything you know. Author and mother of two, Shunali Khullar Shroff in her book began her journey as someone who chronically is devoid of what is naturally termed as a maternal instinct but inspite of her misgivings, eventually realized there is nothing else she would rather be doing than burping her babies while avoiding all traces of tranquilizers. This brilliant whimsical bumpy tale of everyday madness has a voice of a mother both honest and hilarious. The Book reading concluded with a question and answer session where the mothers in the audience asked the author & actresses about how they dealt with daily situations in a mother’s life. Any changes you would like to see in your area (Andheri west) that would help growing kids your age? First and the most important is to have more of open space for kids, a playground where kids are allowed to play ball games. No society allows us to play ball game coz it damages cars, they are right in there place, but where we kids can go, this is one of the reason why kids are getting glued to video games, ipad, mobile phones and other gadgets. The Turf at Mega mall is almost booked every day and very soon it’s going to shut, we should have more of such place in Andheri west for kids. There should be a proper cycling track for kids as well as elders, its very unsafe to ride bicycle on the back road as cars and bike are in zooming speed.

I am basically a draftsman by profession..a mechanical draftsman (When he sees me looking puzzled he says… draw engines and all that). So I did that just to keep my parents happy but I did not wish to continue. My father introduced me to various Hollywood Broadway musical artists like Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers , Bob Fosse. As time went by I was pursuing this career. It was a bumpy ride. It is not easy to be a part of this industry without having people who are known to you or share an arm to drag you along. So I was pretty unfortunate in that manner. But whenever I want something to happen I work towards it. I try and give myself the opportunity to deliver the goods again and again on time. In this journey I have made really wonderful friends who have helped and guided me along the way. Like DJ Akbar Sami. He has given the DJ’s a status in today’s time! Whenever I would need a certain kind of music for the dance, he used to make sure I get it. He also recommended me to wonderful people and pushed me forward.

Q: Tell us a little about your first few projects. A: Javed Jaffrey introduced me to Ketan Mehta during ‘Oh Darling Yeh Hai India’ and said we should try Longie for a song. Ketan Mehta said ‘..this guy..can he come for a look test ? Can you speak hindi ? Can you act..?’ That’s the time I realized ki boss this is my entry ticket. Once you get your step in then you can feel free to take a step forward to move in the direction you prefer. And that’s exactly what I did. Q: So in the film you were acting? A: yea, it was a character job. I was just happy to be there. Plus I did one song with Javed Jaffrey and his brother Naved, with their help. ..As time passed by I lost my father and Farah Khan came home to console me. She said ‘Longie don’t worry.. what are you doing these days?’ . . I said nothing much, so she said..’Longie work with me’. I told her once that in this industry you need people to push you and back you up. She said ‘Longie my support is there with you’. And till date ..you are seeing me..you are in my house ..I have received acclaim from all over the world.. and all the credit goes to this lady. She has been really instrumental in making me the man I am! She recommended me to Mr. Ashok Mehta for ‘Moksha’. I did the song ‘Jaan Leva’ and that was a huge high. After that I got a lot of work..! She helped me get one of my first songs in the film ‘Dil ka Doctor’. She suggested I do ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’ (JDJ). She told me just see the difference and the changes it will bring in your life and she was right! After doing JDJ I became a household name.

I come from a very simple background. I was living in a place called Mazgaon. My Parents were not very keen on me being in this profession to start off with but they were supportive especially when they realized that this is what I want to do. My father was a big follower of Elvis Presley, Beetles. He quite liked John Travolta. I remember when I was very small, around 9-10 years old and told them we need a music system, so he said fine I will get you one. And he got the best.. top of the line .. I can never forget.. Sony HMK-77B. It was the works.. we were all kicked about that. I was very fond of ABBA, Boney M, Elvis Presley, John Travolta, Bee Gees, Dona Summer, Diana Ross. Later on I got very fond of Michael Jackson. I felt this is the man who has changed the entire cycle of dance all over the world. When his ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Beat It’ music videos released .. there was nothing bigger than that at that point of time.

I have received acclaim from all over the world.. and all the credit goes to FARAH KHAN. She has been really instrumental in making me the Man I am!

Then there is Javed Jaffrey. Him and the Jaffrey’s..the entire family. They have been very helpful to me and helped me learn what this industry is all about. Helping me learn what choreography should be. How to live and survive in this industry. I could not speak Hindi and I learnt from their family. on the sets of the movie “The Amazing Trip to India” MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

Q: How did ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ happen? A: I got a chance to meet Mr. Danny Boyle. He said show me what you have done. I had a kind of showreel put together..which was about forty five minutes. He said ‘oh my god, I am not going to see this for forty five minutes..’. I told him Sir see one song.. see what you feel. To my luck the first song was Adnan Sami’s ‘lift kara de..’ remix. He saw that.. fell off laughing. He said Longinus I don’t need to see anything anymore. Whatever I saw is what my story will be all about. You make sure it’s got the rough and raw edges. ‘..make my artists look pleasing to the eye’. That was something new I learnt.. ‘make them look pleasing to the eye’.

Q: Do shows like JDJ give a platform for outsiders to get a foot in the door? ..to get an opening in Bollywood. A: it is an opening for everyone, who is talented ! If you are not talented this is no place to be. Q: Are you trained in several dance forms? A: I am not trained in several dance forms. I have educated myself about what dance forms are there. So I have done my homework. Q: Do you need to change the choreography if the guy has two left feet? A: You don’t need to change any choreography! If you plan something and try and drill it in someone’s head it is never going to work. You need to see the person. Understand him. That is what choreography is all about! It is not about you setting up a dance which looks flamboyant on you. Who wants to see you? They want to see the star! Q: You may be traveling global but you are always living local. What does that mean to you? A: Home away from home! Be it in Spain

or in France just get up and dance.. Enjoy yourself. You don’t have to change according to the circumstances. When in Rome do what the Romans do. No! Those days are gone. I have traveled to fancy restaurants all over the world..sometimes they give you pot biryani. It’s called something else. But its still biryani. And I am not going to have that with a fork and a spoon. I use my hands. Q: Any changes you would like to see in Andheri west, that will benefit the people, the working professionals? A: Our area is buzzing. Bigtime! There are amazing schools, clubs, pubs, good restaurants, a nice mall, amazing offices. The Buildings are A class. It does’nt get too flooded in the rains. The Hospitals are all nearby. The only thing that has to change is the idea of wannabes. There are far too many wannabes. That makes it look as if this is a place where there are only strugglers. If that can change, people will take this place more seriously. You tell someone let’s meet. He says where? You say XYZ .. He’ll be nahin yaar, that place is full of wannabes, or that place is always packed and noisy. Otherwise, the vibe of this place is On!!

Q: Your favorite hangout spots in Andheri west? Yoko’s. Red Box.

SPINNING WITH A CAUSE

We all know what DJ’s do? Well we have ‘some’ idea. But DJ Roshan (Roshan Mansukhani) brings a whole new twist to it. A major concern in today’s time is the usage of ‘Drugs’ …across all age groups, especially amongst the youth. Roshan’s Academy of DJ’s uses music to help people lead a healthier , fuller life minus the chemical. DJ Roshan: I do not like the term ‘addict’. We are all addicted to something ..‘chai’ , ‘coffee’ .. when you call someone an addict, you make them feel like an outcast. I gather all my students on the same platform.. it is about one-ness! I work from home. It is a very homely ambience in which my students train and learn and most importantly, enjoy themselves. Q: Are all the kids who train with you already into drugs or is it before they get into all this ? A: No. No. Of course not! Why wait for

a chemical to defile your body and soul. I enroll everybody, and I teach my students all genres of music. Where I am coming from at my time we had only science, arts, commerce. Now the verticals are too many..the confusion is also too much. Right from day one I let the child/youth start on the console. I help them discover themselves and prepare them to play (DJ) in front of people, an audience .. to give them confidence. Q: Is this also an academy where you train them to take this up as a profession ? A: Of Course . That is the main motive ! It also creates an excellent hobby amongst the youngsters and diverts their mind into fruitful activity in the future. If you ask a child ‘tumhaari hobby kya hai ?’ , they will have to google search , because their life is in their I-pads and computer’s. But what if the server is down one day ? Getting people to dance on your fingertips gives you a high. (smiles). (to contact visit www.klass.in)

ME TIME FOR PARENTS

by Nivedita Mataliya Masters in counseling psyc and a management postgraduate specializing in child, relationship counseling.

A Saturday Night Creche for Lokhandwala Residents

D

uring one of my sessions 4 year old Alia (name changed) says “I am very tired of all this, I think I am going to run away from home”. Astonishing words to come out from a 4 year old. Are those really the child’s words or were they somebody else’s reflection.

On meeting the parents it was evident that the child was mirroring her young mother’s frustrations and exhaustion. The mother had her plate full of responsibilities full of daily chores to be completed. Lack of leisure time with her husband, missing companionship between the two of them, she had been pushing herself to be perfect which had resulted in her being both physically and mentally exhausted. She would often tell her mother on the call that she was very tired and felt like running away from home. Alia had overheard her mother and had internalized the behavior. Sadly, this is not a one off case. Over the years we have had a frighteningly increasing number of cases where the child’s behavioral issues are a result of the parental issues. The fact is that we all love our children very much. We want to give them the best, take care of their every need. Becoming a parent is the single most life-changing event of our lives. To be honest being a parent is no easy feat. In all fairness it is a 25*8 job. Being a parent does not mean that overnight all our needs and wants are eradicated by some nature’s miracle and all we have to do is handle our child to perfection. But that’s what we try to do. We ignore our needs, stop taking enough care of ourselves and focus on the child. But sooner or later this need deprivation 42

catches on and we end up tired, irritated, angry and frustrated. This inner discord naturally manifests itself in our behavior unknowingly. It could be the tone or pitch of our voice, the body language, the way we deal with others etc. Children are very sensitive of their parents. They easily observe this disharmony and learn this behavior. The child then begins to mirror the same emotions like being irritated, angry, stubborn and aggressive. This ultimately defeats the very purpose of our sacrifice. It is imperative that we take care of our needs also so that we are balanced and happy. This way the child will also learn to balance and even respect us more. This applies more so to mothers who are the primary caregivers. As a counselor, I have observed that the parents face a common problem. A problem of guilt looms large for taking this ME TIME. Well answer this. What is better? A cranky and tired parent who is with the child full time or a happy parent who is not there once in a while but is positive and rested inwardly? Various other issues that crop up during our sessions that prevent the parents from this time out are lack of support system, safety and security, issues of leaving the child with the help. As a mother of an 18 month old and a professional psychologist, I could relate with the apprehension of the parents. This is how the Saturday Night Pyjama Party was launched. A Saturday night crèche that runs from 7:30pm to 12:30am. Our aim is to let the parents have some ME TIME while the child has a little entertainment of his own. The crèche has

MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

different activities every Saturday right from karaoke, storytelling, zumbayogics, art and craft, science, dance, singing, treasure hunt and much more. Our expertise with children makes it possible for us to make the child comfortable and engaged in our crèche. In addition there is a focus on having fun and learning. Security and safety is given the utmost preference with regular updates, camera feeds, strict drop and pickup rules. The crèche has started in Lokhandwala as the locality has a young and dynamic demographic who look to live life in a more balanced way. The parents of today believe in working very hard to provide the best for themselves and their children but also believe in living life to the fullest. The high prevalence of nuclear families or the fact that the youngsters don’t want to burden the elders at home with the child’s responsibility or leave the child alone with the help made us realize the importance of a night crèche. The philosophy is very simple. A happy parent will raise a happy child.

UNDER the SPOTLIGHT Studio Relevé is the new hub in Andheri, Lokhandwala for dance enthusiasts and fitness freaks.

The studio holds Zumba, Hip Hop, Bollywood Belly Dance, Yoga, Jazz, Pilates, Bolly-Fit, Contemporary, Salsa and lots of other classes as well as weekly workshops. Their motto is to bridge the gap between keen learners and dedicated teachers. If performing arts interest you, this is the place to be. The teachers here are extremely encouraging and motivating, diet plans and health consultancy are added benefits. “After the studio completed a year we realized the amount of talent this city has to offer, there are such amazing teachers who have classes across the city but not enough funds to put up such a showcase, that’s when we came up with the idea to bring all these teachers together and put up one power packed stage show” says Rushil Nichani(Co-founder). With over 90 participants and a houseful debut Studio Relevé had a super hit first show. The opening act, Ganesh Vandana in Bharatnatyam was highly appreciated by the audience. It shows how the Indian art and culture is still alive in the hearts of all Indians. This was followed by their bright young stars aged between 4 and 6 years enthralling the audience by their innocent yet energetic performance. The stand-up comedian, Rudy as they fondly 44

The chief guest Ms. Manju Nichani, Principal of KC College gave an inspirational speech on the importance of values and moral education, which was truly motivating to all. Mrs. Gurdeep Kohli Punj and Mrs. Vaishali MacDonald also graced the occasion with their presence. Another heart warming act was by the underprivileged children of Spark-A-Change Foundation, a registered NGO in Mumbai which educates the less fortunate children coming from the lower income groups. The children were mentored and taught by Yashna Lalla (founder and director Dance Dynamix), it was truly a delight to watch them dance with so much confidence and joy. 12th April, Rangsharda Auditorium was a memorable and an entertaining experience for friends and family of participants who were in the “SPOTLIGHT.

Children and summer learning: 5 building blocks for their brains (BPT) - “No more pencils and no more books” is a chant heard on playgrounds across the country when the final bell releases students for the summer months. And while Alice Cooper’s lyrics go on to showcase how excited the children are about their freedom from homework, they also highlight one of the biggest problems the American educational system faces each year: summer brain drain. Sure, nobody wants to be in the classroom year-around, but there are plenty of ways to keep your children’s learning going strong - without the pencils and books! With the following suggestions, your children will have so much fun staying mentally engaged; they’ll be looking forward to the next learning activity all summer long. * Nature programs - Nature and science go hand-in-hand, and many counties, cities and other types of municipalities have established educational centers or learning centers where residents of all ages can learn more about the plants, animals and natural elements that live in the region. During the summer months, they’ll offer classes on fun and engaging subjects like bird banding, water ecology, surviving in the wilderness and star identification. * Theater productions - The stage contains so many avenues of learning potential, it will take more than just this summer to experience them all. Start with the set construction, which provides a great opportunity to learn building and designing skills. Lighting and sound have 46

their own electrical specialties. For the performance itself, line memorization, understanding the character and choreography all require intense training to keep the brain sharp all summer long. There are theater programs designed for children of all ages. * STEM camps - There are many camps that offer science, technology, engineering and math-based learning in a fun way for students. Take, for instance, the Bricks 4 Kidz camps, which focus on design and building skills using LEGO(R) Bricks. Camps are guided by experienced teachers around exciting themes like amusement parks, space and robotics, or even animated movie-making. All subjects feature hands-on building and designing using children’s favorite toy, LEGO Bricks. * Music programs - Music education goes beyond just learning notes and scales, it’s been proven in many different studies to improve students’ learning abilities in other subjects as well. Additionally, music education is extremely diverse, making it available for any child with any talents. For example, your child might sound more like Kermit the Frog than Michael Buble, but when you give him a trumpet he can make music come alive. * Create a book club - Educators say it’s important for students to keep reading during the summer months. It doesn’t have to be text books or even pleasure books. Comics are great for keeping the brain stimulated. Get your kids and their MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

friends together once a week for book club to discuss something everyone in the group read. Rotate where the club meets to include community parks, the local ice cream shop and the community pool. Many libraries will host a summer reading program, and you can contact your local librarian for resources or ideas for keeping kids interested. When looking for a summer educational program, make certain it has the following: * Emphasis on cognitive development and building self-esteem in a fun environment. * The use of relatable tools that children can learn with, such as LEGO Bricks. * Time for working with groups as well as individually. * Engaging lesson plans that promote creativity. Summer is almost here, so get your children signed up for ongoing educational programs so they’ll be ready to jump right back into school when it starts up again next fall.

The secret to Mother’s Day gifting success:

Give time, not stuff (BPT) - She nursed you through countless cases of childhood sniffles, taught you to tie your shoes and make a mean omelet, and she’s still your go-to source for good advice and your favorite home-baked cookies. Are you really going to just give Mom a pair of socks and some flowers for Mother’s Day? You can do better than that. In the tradition of a current pop-culture meme, here’s a “give this, not that” list of Mother’s Day ideas: Give: Your time. Last year, 44 percent of mothers surveyed by online deal site PriceGrabber said they wanted quality time with their family for Mother’s Day. Whether your family includes adult children who live and work far from their childhood home (and Mom) or a busy family with young children, it can be hard to find time to spend with each other on a regular basis. On Mother’s Day, make a point of devoting the day to Mom. Whatever you choose to do together - dine out, visit a botanical garden or just hang out at home - you’ll be giving her the gift she wants most: time with you. Don’t give: Stuff. There’s a difference between a thoughtful gift that has meaning to the recipient, and something clearly bought out of desperation just so the giver has something to hand over on Mother’s Day. Moms know the difference. Things like cowboy boots, sunglasses and even designer purses were among the items mothers said they didn’t want in a survey by Ebates. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy something she may not want. Put some thought into the gift a week or two before the big day so you can be sure you’re giving her something she really wants, like a piece of unique jewelry, her favorite bath products, or an attractive scarf. Give: A great meal out. It’s easy to understand why dining out was on the list

of most-wanted gifts for mothers in every geographic area surveyed by Ebates. What could make Mom happier than enjoying a great meal with her family? Not having to cook it herself or clean up afterward! Taking Mom out for meal is a time-honored Mother’s Day tradition and restaurants can be busy on the first Sunday of May. In fact, Chris Ciavarra, senior vice president of marketing for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, reports that Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for their restaurant locations across the country. When choosing a place to take Mom, look for a place that will please her palate with familiar flavors, good food and the kind of warm, comforting ambience she creates in her own dining room or kitchen. Family-style restaurants like Cracker Barrel are a good choice for Mother’s Day because there’s something on the menu for everyone. Plus, when Mom’s done with her meal, she can pick out the perfect gift from the store’s collection of nostalgic items. Don’t give: Practical kitchen items. No matter how much Mom says she wants a new electric can opener or how much she needs a new set of pots and pans, don’t give these items on Mother’s Day. Moms are more than just the sum of the time they spend in the kitchen. If she really needs and wants those things, why not give them to her at some other time of year, for no other reason than she’s MAY 2015 Volume 1 Issue 1 LIVING LOCAL MUMBAI

a great mother? Or, if you must give something kitchen-related for Mother’s Day, consider something that’s pretty and fun, too, like decorative serve ware. Buy from a store that offers free gift wrapping services - like Cracker Barrel - and it’s even easier to give a good-looking gift. Give: Gift cards. A gift card to her favorite store was another popular selection of moms surveyed by Ebates. But don’t think giving her a gift card is all you have to do. Research to find just the right card for her, and then offer to accompany her on a shopping excursion to her favorite store. That way, you’ll be giving her two things she wants most - a gift card and time spent with you. Don’t give: Technology. Do you really want to give Mom a smartphone that will be obsolete by next Mother’s Day? Or a tablet so complicated she’ll never figure out how to use it on her own? If your mother’s digitally inclined, chances are she already has the tech she needs and wants. And if she doesn’t, trying to choose it for her can be like trying to pick a pet for someone else - never a good idea. Instead, keep gift items simple, personal and nostalgic. HOROSCOPE (MAY ) (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.)

The year ahead for TAURUS: Happy Birth Anniversary! Your year ahead will unfold with three key phrases, ‘coming home’, ‘settling down’ and ‘finding your groove’. Things for which you have worked hard will now show results according to your original intentions. Mark this year as a very comfortable one, indeed! All is well! ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) The month of May would seem to start with just your interests being served, and you are energetic enough to continue any winning spree right till the end. It would be a good idea to allow others to help you, occasionally. Health will respond well to taking care.

LIBRA (September 23rd-October 22nd) You are likely to encounter this month circumstances that will challenge your sense of fairness. Still, insist on being yourself, and eventually, matters will ease out. Regular relaxation will be most beneficial for your health. Stay at ease with yourself and everything will bow before you.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th) This month, you will have a mixed bag, which you can enjoy, actually, as mid-month onwards; there are energies, which are very supportive of you. Give yourself options of relaxation and your health will be just fine, amidst all activities. You need not engage in battles that are not your own.

SCORPIO (October 23rd-November 22nd) Your guardian angels are out full force, surrounding you with loving care, so whatever the situation seems to be this month, stay in your calm zone. For your information, things will be merely exciting, not challenging; so if you feel like it, engage in those challenges according to your nature. There is variety to be observed; but do not allow that to destabilise you. Meditation and relaxation will benefit your health.

GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th) A very interesting month for you, with plenty of activities all around to observe! Holidays would be adventurous. You can consciously keep your health well and your energies high. It would be a good idea to refrain from over-excitement and over-indulgences.

CANCER (June 21st-July 21st) Your guardian angel is looking after you, so however contrary situations seem through the month, try to step back and look at them as a story unfolding. There could be life’s hilarious moments revealed! Your health will respond to looking after, so do it well. Refrain from challenging your digestion, even on a holiday. Routine helps!

LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd) May promises to be more exciting than you have planned for yourself, so right away, arrange for all your support to be at hand. You will cope very well, and perform even better, provided you allow your muses, guardian angels and friends to supply the balms and bandages at the right moments. Acknowledge your sensitivity, mainly through looking after your health as well as you can.

VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd) You are among those who can carry on when the whole world finds the going tough. This month, draw inspiration from your habit of staying well-informed. Use your ability to do the right thing for your own self, first. Routine regularity will benefit your health.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) If there ever was a happy camper in the midst of a tornado, it would be you, this month! Of course, you are very aware of what ‘difficulty’ is, but you also know how to put a cheerful face on it and have yourself an adventure. By the end of the month, you can have help, if you want. Moderation would be the key to good health. Else, have yourself a blast!

CAPRICORN (December 22nd–January 19th) Your innate stability, with some help from your guardian angels, will make the high energy quotient of this month become just so much more fuel available for your hard work engine. Make sure you are on your chosen path, and make time for fun-based health activities, and all will be excellent. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th) You are very learned and it helps that you know that there are always flip sides to all coins. So, even when this month becomes too energetic for your personal comfort, you can step back and allow the energies to be of service to those for whom they are meant. Allow yourself plenty of time to relax. Better still, plan a holiday and take it! PISCES (February 19th-March 20th) You have a very strong sense of underlying emotions to all situations. Be kind to yourself this month and put yourself in an observer mode whenever you feel the situation to be becoming more intense that you are ready for. You can always come back to it later on. Keep up all regular practices that you already have for your health. If you feel hot, consider swimming. However, working will help you far more this month than will a holiday.

Clients Speak (testimonials) Samarpit is known to us since a decade. We have extreme faith in him and wish that many more benefited from his knowledge. D Hinduja -Business, Mumbai (India)

Mr. Samarpit is a Mumbai

based acclaimed celebrity astrologer and can be best described as a New Age astrologer. He is primarily a multi faceted businessman who got into the field of astrology about a decade and half back and has numerous clients, pan India and in different parts of the world. His dealing with 6,000 plus clients has made him well researched to deliver his clients whatever they expect of him. His clients irrespective of their different castes, religions and nationalities have always benefited from his knowledge. His clientele includes successful Media personalities, Business houses, Corporates, Lawyers, Doctors, Royals, Housewives (Domestic Issues) and many people from different professions. Mr. Samarpit has intense knowledge on Vastu and Numerology and while consulting a client he likes to mix all three (Astrology, Numerology, Vastu) and provide an overall guide to his client. In his own words “Astrology is a Vedic science, which needs to be studied well and then applied. One has to be responsible enough to understand that this can work in negative for people and their lives if not done efficiently. I like to mix vastu, numerology and astrology and provide a complete solution to my client.” Having said that he again emphasizes “Astrologers are NOT GOD and neither astrology any form of a miracle. It is a science and like any specialization it has

its grammar, though application of the same differs from astrologer to astrologer. An Astrologer in his best of capability will only wish good for you but they “cannot change destiny” They can enhance your good and minimize your bad. Rest depends on your “karma”. Never expect miracles from astrologers. Take their say as guidelines only”. Samarpit surely knows that faith and trust is most important when it comes to clients. He also offers the concept of “Ask a free question” which is done via his website only. Explaining the concept he told us “ This is a very novel concept which I incorporated when I got into this field of astrology, where clients of any origin and from anywhere can ask me one question, of their choice through my website. The client can ask about any area of his life and I will answer it. This helps my clients to try me before coming to me and investing their time, money and faith in me. Once the client gets his desired result and he is assured of my prediction, he knows he can come to me for appropriate guidance and can plan his life accordingly.” As Samarpit concludes he says, “Client satisfaction is of utmost importance for me”

Samarpit has been very accurate in his predictions in my case. He was honest and provided me a true picture based on my horoscope. Unlike many astrologers, he was not afraid to communicate any unpleasant news. I found him to be very professional in his approach. He also advised certain prayers and stones depending upon my horoscope and following his advice I can see positive changes in my life. I sincerely recommend Samarpit in case you are looking for any astrological advice K Agarwal -Accenture Melbourne (Australia) Samarpitji has always guided us well and we look forward to always being guided by him in future. R.C. Pandey - MP Lucknow (India) Dear all, I am 46 yrs of age and I met many astrologers, but very few people meet genius astrologers who speak the truth. I can very proudly say that Samarpitji is one of them. He advises what is good for us and we have got very positive results from him. Thanks for your guidance. Society needs your guidance. The True Happiness Quotient

by Subhashini Sheopuri

H

uman beings are meant to be happy. They have brains to think and hearts to feel deeply. Out of all the various feelings one experiences in life, happiness has no replica, happiness has no substitute. There is nothing greater than the feeling of a gurgling joy in the heart, which one experiences at a given moment in time. It may be due to anything, but this feeling is the most beautiful thing that we can have, and we hold these memories close to our hearts as we combat the various difficulties and problems of life. The earliest memories of childhood hold inside the sweetest joys of playtime with friends out in the parks or playground. New clothes, festivals, good food and above all the doting parents and squabbly siblings that hold so dear to us, and with time the different stages of life we go through, nothing retains more precious in our hearts than the moments of joy in the little things. For me observing nature is the most satisfying since my childhood. Somehow the deep blue skies, the birds

flying and making soft sweet music, the trees swaying in the breeze, the Sun and sand on the beach, the smell of flowers and sounds of the daily motion of people everywhere going about their work evokes a thrill every day, till today. I have never been able to take anything for granted till date. It’s all new each day, its inspiring, it’s invigorating, it’s magic. It assures us that God is in the Heavens, and all is right with the world. Of course I know that life is not all roses and wine, and that every day also brings with it various trials and tribulations. In this day and age there is so much turmoil in society and materialism has taken over the planet. We are more concerned about acquiring new gadgets and earning the respect of others than we are of self-realisation and improvement. The mantra today is everything goes. But if you look deep inside in your heart, you will realise that inspite of all the changes in our lives, we are still like little children eager to have fantasy dreams of a kingdom where

everything is clean and clear and there is no misery or hardship at all. We are still grasping at dreams, and trying to touch the stars! Ok, let’s assume there is loads of happiness somewhere out there, just waiting for us to embrace it.Let us presume we all are capable of being happy, like innocent kids giggling and running at playtime. So what if we are grownups, and old people and fragile and vulnerable young ladies and dashing young men slogging hard at our careers. So what if life is actually lost in a maze of traffic and queues and day to day existence wherein each day seems like a repeat of the previous one, and the next day seems to be the same over and over again. We may have lost the joy of living and find ourselves just going through the motions. We have to wake up and understand that God intended for us to be happy. God intended for all of us to enjoy this beautiful magnificent gift that we have, this gift of life. Its up to us now.

Ingredient Of A Corruption Free Country

by Divya Panday

If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher. Dr. A P. J. Abdul Kalam India has come a long way since Independence. Indians have seen many changes and like every coin has two sides, some changes are good and some are bad. We constantly ask for a corruption free India, but did we really think from where the corruption has taken its birth. Yes, it’s us. It is so funny, the people who created it now want to get rid of it. Corruption is not only limited to the Governments, its entities or political leaders. It is much more than that. If we really want to get rid of the corruption, we need to clean our minds first. Let us understand what corruption actually is: CORRUPTION DISHONEST OR FRAUDULENT CONDUCT BY THOSE IN POWER, TYPICALLY INVOLVING BRIBERY. THE PROCESS BY WHICH SOMETHING, TYPICALLY A WORD OR EXPRESSION, IS CHANGED FROM ITS ORIGINAL USE OR MEANING TO ONE THAT IS REGARDED AS ERRONEOUS OR DEBASED. It is not necessary that only political leaders or people who are rich are the only powerful people in this world. We are powerful too. When we tell small children if they will study for some time or if they remain quite for some time they will get a chocolate or candies or toys in return; that is Corruption too. And this is the stage from where it starts. The minds of small children are really pure and beautiful and by doing like this we put thoughts of greediness and selfishness into them, and this continues for a longer period of time. So when the infant becomes an adult, they continue to do the things with others what their loved ones once did with them. If we will not stop today, surely corruption will continue to live longer. A plant needs soil, water, sunlight, fertilizers and the care of the owner, similarly we need to check and take care of the things we are teaching our young ones. We should not make the minds of our young ones like a thorny tree. Let’s strive to make their minds like blooming and beautiful flower and a fruitful and helpful tree. 52
