What’s not for Sale this Diwali: Happiness

E

very day during the festive season the most highlighted word in every form of media is SALE. The battle of the e-commerce giants’ Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon makes it all the more exciting for the consumers to make their pick. The brick and mortar stores don’t want to fall short either. You see advertisements with gifts that pretty much fall under all categories of materialistic things known in the world. All on Sale. BUT there is one thing that is never on Sale – Happiness. No matter how big or small the festival may be, happiness never finds its way in this discounted fashion ever. There is a very good reason for the same – Happiness never had a price tag on it to begin with. It was always free, all around us and available with no conditions applied. All we have to do is grab it, feel it, embrace it and celebrate it.

Editor-in-chief Anubhav Anand Twitter- @anubhavanand

With the festivities of Diwali around the corner, there is happiness in the air by default. It comes from spending time with friends, family bonding, get-togethers, puja and all things that don’t require an advertisement with Sale on it. Did your real true friends ever judge you based on how big your car was or the brand of your watch? Probably not. They judged you based on the happiness you brought in by being a part of their lives. There is nothing wrong with indulging in the materialistic pleasures of the Sales that are almost pleading you to pick the products. But that pleasure is short lived. A longer and meaningful happiness will probably come when you give a materialistic item to someone who cannot afford it. See the joy on a poor kids face when you give him or her a candy or a toy they cannot afford. And unknowingly that genuine joy on their face gives us the Happiness that we couldn’t have bought for ourselves on any direct Sale. As I wish you all a very happy Diwali and a prosperous year ahead, I also wish you all the most important thing of all – Happiness.

Hide a manicure that’s growing out by creating a glitter ombré effect starting at the base of your nails. 3. If you’re too impatient to wait for your moisturizer, toner, and self-tanner to dry, or for your makeup to set, then blast your skin with a blow-dryer on the cool setting.

with your whole makeup regimen, use lipstick to add a little colour to your lips, cheeks, and eyes. 5. If you love winged liner but don’t have the hand-eye coordination to do it perfectly, no big deal: You can clean messy edges with a cotton swab coated with petroleum jelly. 6. If you’re out of liquid or gel eyeliner, borrow some mascara instead of going to the store. 7. Instantly make your eyes look more awake by lining the inner rim (also known as the waterline) of your lower eyelid with a nude eye pencil. 8. Make your blowout last longer than one day by rolling your hair into a looped bun and pinning it before bed. 9. If your hair is too dirty for words but there’s absolutely no chance you’re waking up early enough for a wash, apply baby powder liberally to your roots before bed. 10. If you’ve washed your hair but don’t have the energy to blow it dry, loosely twist your hair into a low bun, secure with a clip, and go about your life.

Travel Essentials – Minimum Baggage Maximum Freedom!

F

a. Travel as light as possible because unnecessary things are nothing but a liability. b. One cluster of 7 specific items (i.e a total of 15 garments) is enough for 15 to 20 days of a trip. c. Only if you go light, chances are you can bring souvenirs & shop from the local shops. Before I list down the names, I strongly recommend you to do your homework about your destination – determining

12

In my preference carrying basics is the best choice to make. As they mix and match – Plain white/black/navy blue/ grey t-shirts can easily be worn with shorts, skirts & can also be accessorized with neck piece or scarf in an easy manner, while the others could be your personal favorite ones! At the same time make sure you carry different styles – Racer back, halter, camisoles, and fancy blouses for evening wear.

irst time I traveled outside India, it was to New Zealand for my honeymoon. Since it was first time, the super-excited soul in me carried the whole wardrobe along. Being our “honeymoon”, I could carry all of it” but I did realize I’d taken loads of unnecessary items which were left unused. So, for my next trip to Spain & Portugal which was more of a backpacker’s trip and not a honeymoon style luxurious one – it’s a great deal of walking around with the luggage, I decided to pack half number of clothes I carried to New Zealand. But this time we stayed in hostels and managing the baggage was a pain. Again I learnt few things from that trip:

the season during the months you’re traveling & some do’s and don’ts for travelers in that country. This list is specifically for pleasant/warm climate only. So here are the travel essentials every woman must carry to complete their look as well as to suit their destination. Find the list below: 1. T-shirts & Blouses (6 or 7) It’s the most vital part of the cluster.

November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

2. Shorts (2) Trust me two pairs of shorts are enough for a 15 day trip. Dark colored jeans works best as they can be worn multiple times without washing. While the other pair you could consider printed ones or any other color of your choice. Shorts are awesome for beach destinations, but do your homework before wearing them to sight see religious places in all of Europe like cathedrals or Mosques as they are strict about rules even with tourists. 3. Leggings (1) These are best for travel – airplane or long bus/train/car journey from one destination to the other, especially for summers. They can be worn with any tee or blouse, are easy to wear, look fashionable & are most comfortable to stay in for all day!

4. Skater Dress (2) A dress for the day and one for night in case you plan a date or party. Plan your clothing according to the places you are going to visit on that particular day. The reason for specifically carrying skater dress is you can team it up with any top and there you get a new outfit. Also, keep in mind to choose the fabric wisely depending upon the temperatures – georgette, chiffon, crepe may make you feel uncomfortable in overly hot climate or satin may stick to your body in rains/ strong winds. 5. Maxi (1) Maxi dresses are too comfortable, cool and can be worn in different ways – with cardigan, neck piece or scarf to get you different looks each time you wear it. They are good for all body types especially the good fitted ones. Personally, I feel, it’s a mark of a woman ;)

sunscreen, body cream, lip balm, wallet, swim wear, sarong and sunglasses. Personally, instead of carrying a tote (which is more fashionable), I’d carry a sling bag because it lets my hands be free to greet people, touch and feel nature and capture photographs etc.

It’s a great deal of walking around with the luggage

3. Accessories Sunglasses, hat, earrings, neck pieces and scarves are a must. Sunglasses are essential for any destination. Make sure you co-ordinate your jewelry and scarf along with your tees, dresses, maxi dress, also pack no more than 2 or 3 different pieces of each.

7. Swimwear(1) Of course, swim wear is a must if your destination is a beach. If not still carry it along, it hardly weighs anything & you never know where you get a chance to take a dip. Different swim wears are available for various body types; find out which one is for yours. Generally I just wear my shorts over the costume so it looks like a crop top – 2 in 1 effect! Apart from clothes, here are few essentials to have a complete look at the trip: 1. Footwear Walking shoes/boots, a pair of flip flops and evening ballerinas/sandals/wedges depending on what you prefer – 3 pairs are must have if you going in for leisure cum adventurous cum party trip. 2. Sling bag A medium sized sling bag is ideal because it has just enough space to carry your day essentials like day cream,

www.shutterstock.com/Superson

6. Cardigan(1) One Cardigan is a must. It saves skin from sun tan, and also protects you from cold wind and is also an outfit that you can easily mix and match – shorts + tee +cardigan or Maxi + cardigan or Skater dress + cardigan – to have different looks each time!

4. Make up Make up that I usually carry for my holiday includes – sun screen, a good tinted moisturizer (especially if you want to have an even skin tone), lipstick, lip-balm, eye pencil (but apply occasionally) and make up remover. I don’t say make up is a must, but a little bit of it for the day – lipstick and tinted moisturizer and for the night – eye pencil, lipstick and tinted moisturizer make you look more polished.

Travel as light as possible because unnecessary things are nothing but a liability

I believe in a foreign county we represent our country, so might as well make a good impression on people around the world about my country! Happy Holidays!

Good news is that it can be reversed, provided you start treatment early. You may need a holistic program of hair revive and regrow treatments along with suitable home care system and nutritional supplements. Of course, treating the root cause is vital. Hence I would recommend that you consult a hair specialist doctor who can get to the root of the problem and plan a hair volume boosting regime for you.

Dear Soma, Many factors come together to cause hair thinning in women. Of them, nutritional deficiencies, ageing (or pre-mature ageing) of the hair root or follicle, and hormonal imbalances are the most important factors. Ageing reduces blood circulation to the follicle, depriving the hair of nutrition. Nutritional deficiencies aggravate the problem. Hormonal imbalances (eg. Thyroid problems, PCOD, peri-menopausal period) alter the male:female hormone ratio and cause shrinking of hair follicle.

Q. My husband is 35 yrs old. He has started balding, this has increased since 3 years. He has a genetic tendency for balding. Can he get back his hair without surgery? - Sonali Sharma

In your case, probable peri-menopausal hormonal disturbances or ageing changes with genetic tendency may be the primary culprits.

14

Dear Sonali, There are 7 different stages in male pattern hair loss. Depending on the stage of your husband’s hair loss, one can recommend the appropriate treatments. Non-surgical treatments like BiogenesisTM and Nutri-driveTM do help in effectively reversing the hair loss and re growing the natural hair back. What is very important is to opt for holistic treatments for best results. In advanced stages as well as in reconstructing the receding hair line,

November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

surgical treatments may be needed. Remember even when opting for surgical treatments like hair transplant, medical treatments need to be done simultaneously to ensure that the existing hair are preserved. Another non-surgical hair reconstruction is hair integration system. Using this solution, one can get a full head of hair instantly. This solution is very useful to give complete scalp coverage in advanced hair loss cases.

Q. Doctor, of late, I have been noticing that my hair is thinner than what it used to be. Also, my scalp is more visible, especially in the center of parting. I am a 45 years old, busy, professional. I maintain a healthy lifestyle. Also, I only use good branded shampoo and conditioners. Hence am not able to understand why my hair is thinning. Is it ageing? What should I do? - Soma Parikh

Custom Made

Furniture

T

he cost of getting custom made furniture might deter some people. It’s not that much of a problem, though. Nowadays, custom furniture can cost as much as buying ready-made furniture. So, if you budget it right, you don’t have to worry about spending more than you want to spend. Advantages Of Custom Made Furniture

Custom furniture is what you should turn to when you cannot find the exact type of furniture you are looking for to fit in the rooms of your house. Since

many furniture showrooms these days are packed full of pieces made using pressed wood, it can be a challenge to find quality modern furniture these days. Furniture like this typically does not last very long after you begin using it so even if you do find the style or design you are looking for, the purchase probably will not be worthwhile. Reasons to Furniture

Choose

Custom

Made

Mark & Measure custom made furniture is designed and built to meet the particular needs of the space you have to fill. Making the right choices might mean running through several design possibilities during the process of finding the right match for your home and personality. Using age-old traditions, paying close attention to detail produces a high quality finish furniture. Size, type of timber, and finish may be all personally selected according to your taste and flair for design.

Why Not Furniture?

Save

&

Buy

Discounted

Discount furniture is inherently generic, making little artistic or aesthetic impact on your living space. Do you really want furniture that everyone else has sitting in their homes? Custom made furniture adds the perfect mood to your room, tying individual elements like carpet and wall color into a cohesive theme. Custom Made furniture has a personality, and it usually lasts for decades, making it a wise investment. Custom made pieces will be an heirloom that you can pass down for generations, as they are built to last. They become heirlooms that you are proud to pass onto your family. Discount furniture generally has a short life and the cheaper materials will wear out a lot faster. Always remember that quality custom made furniture will always have a great resale value. What you pay for it today is an investment.

ouple of decades back, a typical “MARD” was someone very macho. A strong man who fought goons to protect his damsel in distress. This generation cheered every time Amitabh Bachchan screamed, ‘Mard ko dard nahi hota”. The definition has gone through various iterations, MARD in 2015 is a progressive man who cheers for his woman every time she wins, shares responsibility, isn’t conscious about being sensitive and stands with her through tough decisions. This article is not about what women expect from men but about all those men, who in their own way want to tell women that they respect us. I know so many men who are “True Gentleman” and treat us right. They want to step up and prove all stereotypical judgments are wrong. This is not a gender debate, because not all men are the same.

to make a difference by standing strong for women that represent strength and dignity. These men are amongst us, our dad, brothers, spouse, partner, sons, friends and we love them. FINANCIAL PLANNING LESSONS FOR A JOYOUS DIWALI

“T

he greatest Indian sale is here!!!” Are these the kind of emails that you are receiving in your inbox? I certainly think so. Is this changing the way you consume? Your spending can be categorized into two types - regular spends and lifestyle spends. Regular spending includes basic necessities of life, whilst lifestyle spending includes items that enhance your convenience. There are a number of factors which affect consumer spending patterns How and where you shop? Shopping online or at supermarkets mostly ends up in you buying more than what you actually need. Having a list indicating what you need to buy can prevent you from buying things that you do not absolutely require. Rising brand consciousness – Global exposure, introduction of new products and offers are some of the reasons. Easy availability of credit - Personal loans and plastic money options such as debit cards, credit cardsand other online payment options also contribute to a great extent towards making it easier to spend and reduce the pain of delayed gratification.

20

Increased spending on luxury items The image below shows that Indians have started spending more towards luxury goods.

Growth of the eating out culture Lifestyle expenditure is not just limited to shopping but also dining out. Earlier people used to go out for dining may be once in a month or only to celebrate specific occasions. It’s good to celebrate and spend a part of your savings on yourself. But before doing that we must ask ourselves few important questions – Have I saved enough? What impact will this have on my important long term goals? Things that we can do to make sure that we do not deviate from our long term goals are: Keep a check on our expenses: This can be done by making a budget for oneself – separate regular expenses and occasional expenses like vacation and other onetime expenses. Also a lot of expense management applications are available on our smartphones these days. Invest regularly: Get yourself into the habit to invest regularly. Change your thinking from “ I got a goodBonus this

Diwali, let me buy a new LED TV or a latest smart phone” to “Let me invest this for my long term goals”. Plan in advance: Make a list of your goals – self education, child education, property purchase, etc. Know the amount of money you would need for each of these. Don’t forget to apply inflation while calculating the value of these goals when they become due. Insurance: Plan for both term insurance, and health and critical illness cover in your kitty. Have a wonderful Diwali, but keep your lifestyle expenses in check.

Q&A with

Sakhiya Skin Clinic

I am a 30 year old woman facing issues like dark spots on both the cheeks and no glow on the skin after the delivery of my first child around 3 years ago. I have tried home remedies and facials but have not seen much change. Please suggest if there is some way to overcome this problem. Ruchita, Mumbai A. Hi Ruchita, Due to hormonal changes which occur during pregnancy, some women develop pigmentation around cheeks and forehead which is known as melasma or pregnancy mask. Start using a good sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor of 15 or higher). Remember to repeat the application after 2 to 3 hours. Use creams which contain mild lightening agents like vitamin C, AHA acids (alpha hydroxy acids), kojic acid, glutathione or arbutin at night. Treatments like Peels, certain lasers and Medifacials help in lightening the pigment. You could visit a good dermatologist who could guide you.

Q. As I am nearing 40....I have noticed

that my skin looks loose. I feel I have lost the tightness that I had in my skin around 7 to 8 years ago. What best can I do to prevent this aging process and reverse it if possible? Nirali Mehta. 39 yrs. Mumbai A. Hi Nirali,

22

We start aging faster as we cross our late 20’s. You start noticing appearance of fine lines and wrinkles along with loss of elasticity of skin. Collagen and elastin are two important components which maintain the skin elasticity. As we age, these break down causing loss of skin laxity and sagging of skin. Invest in a good antiaging serum and a night cream according to your skin type. Look out for creams containing AHAs , retinol, peptides or ceramides. When used on a regular basis these can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To slow down the aging process treatments like radiofrequency skin tightening, peels and skin boosters would help. When done on a regular basis, it will prevent further sagging of skin. Minimally invasive treatments like dermal fillers and threads will help plump up and tighten the skin.

changes in the body. These factors could lead to dull, patchy skin and lack of the much desired glow on face. Antioxidants play an important role here. Start consuming foods rich in vitamin C like orange, lemon, Indian Gooseberry. Take Antioxidant tablets which contain vitamin A, C and E. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or 20 regularly. For getting a glow during the festive season you could opt for skin brightening treatments like fruit peels, chemical peels or photofacials. You could also start using a pack made from gram flour or oatmeal, turmeric and yoghurt with a few drops of lemon juice added to it. Use this once a week. www.shutterstock.com/ Yuganov Konstantin

Mumbai at 4th highest number of Suicides Accelerating suicides in Mumbai’s youth causing genesis of mental health decadence by Dr. Sonal Anand Psychiatrist, Medical Director at Omni Health Services

T

he social, economic and psychological burden of suicides is a major public health burden in all countries of the world and more so in India. The NCRB statistics ranked Mumbai at 4th highest number of suicides in 2013. The figure had gone up by 2% as compared to 2012 amounting to almost 3 suicides per day. The study shows that suicide is among the 3 top causes of death amongst people within the age group of 15- 35 years. Among men 40 % of suicides are reported amongst people belonging to the age group of 15 – 29 years. For women it is nearly 60%. So what is causing so much turmoil in the minds of the young? Pressure of academics and social fragmentation has an important role to play, no doubt, but that doesn’t seem to complete the picture. Contemporary suicidologists believe that fantasies of what would happen after suicide and thoughts of consequences of suicide affect the psychodynamics of the young mind. In fact a previous suicide attempt is the best indicator that a person is at risk. Additional factors include a genetic predisposition, torment of family violence, impulsive traits and alcohol or drugs related problems. Incompatibility between physical and mental development, easy access to alcohol and peer pressure adds fuel to the fire. Pre- existing depression is a common cause of suicide. Some data has suggested that conflicts over sexual orientation also raises the risk. “Taboo associated with mental illnesses

24

has limited the access to mental health services, a lot of people don’t know that depression and other mood disorders are like any other medical disorder like diabetes or hypertension which can be treated with medication and psychotherapy”, says Dr.Sonal Anand, consultant Psychiatrist at Omni Health Services Pvt Ltd, Andheri. She adds that lifestyle maladaptations have put the younger generation on the edge who are constantly looking for instant gratification. Parents, teachers and friends have a major role to play in helping the youngsters. Warning signs to look out for: - Becoming more irritable/ speaking less than before / withdrawing from family and friends. -Talk of suicide or death, even in a jovial way. - Getting lower grades. - Talks of worthlessness / hopelessness. - Indulgent sprees of alcohol and drugs. For the depressed it is important to know that due to negative thoughts your brain blocks out alternate solutions, but there always is another solution. If you cannot control yourself, contact someone who can help you. Mental health professionals are equipped in diagnosing and treating depression and suicidal thoughts with medication and counselling. “We cover behavior therapies like CBT, REBT which helps in rationalizing cognition and behavior of an individual. There are specific techniques which are applied like meditation and guided imagery which often have proved beneficial to clients or patients”, says Ms. Simrita Basrur from Omni, which provides psychiatric and psychological services.

STROKE:

A Rising Menaca For All Ages Dr. Payal Pancholi M P T Orthopaedics and sports Rehabilitation Consultant physiotherapist Karman Pain Care

S

troke is one of the leading cause of death and disability in India. It is caused by interruption of blood supply to the brain leading to paralysis of one half of the body. By 2015, India will report 1.6 million cases of stroke annually, at least one-third of whom will be disabled. Today, I would like to share with you a case history of a patient and her journey to recovery from a massive stroke.

Sujata Vyas (name changed), 62 year old active house wife was busy with her daily routine work when she suddenly experienced severe headache followed by weakness of her left upper and lower

26

limbs. Her husband rushed her to nearby hospital where she was diagnosed with brain stroke. She was under medical supervision in hospital for 15 days after which she was discharged and advised physiotherapy. Her husband contacted our center Karman Pain Care for physiotherapy and discussed her case in detail with me. MRI reports clearly indicated massive major arteries infract. Physical examination revealed gross weakness of left arm and leg, difficulty in getting from the bed and inability to walk without support along with loss of balance and coordination. I explained her carefully about her condition and designed goal oriented treatment program for her. Rehabilitation focused on an exercise regime consisting of strength training, stretching and coordination and balance activities. Within 20-25 days Mrs. Vyas (name changed) was able to get up independently from the bed and walk independently with the help of stick. According to the level of recovery, the treatment program was modified and

November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

new goals were set with more difficult and complex tasks to further challenge her abilities.

By the end of two months she could do most of her work independently. After this, I discussed her progress with her husband and devised a home program for her which she continued for three more months with a review of exercise and progress every 15 days. She was once again able to move independently without any support and return to her daily life. She was very happy and grateful to the team of Karman Pain Care for their constant efforts and motivation which gave her independence. Stroke hits all the age groups and not just the elderly. Special attention should be paid to the onset of symptoms and quick action should be taken.

How Moving Your

Butt

H

ave you heard the news? Sitting is the new smoking.

It’s taking years off your life. All that time you spend parked behind a steering wheel, slumped over a keyboard, or kicked back in front of the TV increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and even depression. Not mention what it does to your waistline. Here’s what the research shows.  Sitting for more than three hours a day can cut two years off your life expectancy, even if you exercise regularly.  Watching TV for more than two hours a day can shorten life expectancy even further, by another 1.4 years.  An Australian study determined that watching an hour of TV was about as lethal for anyone over 25 years of age as lighting up one cigarette. This is not good news for those of us who are chained to a desk all day long! What Happens to Your Body When You Sit? Long periods of sitting cause changes in your body. These include:  Overproduction of insulin by your pancreas: Cells that aren’t moving don’t respond as well to the effects of insulin, so your body makes more. This can lead to diabetes in the long run.

28

 An increased risk for colon, breast and endometrial cancers: One theory is that excess insulin encourages cell growth. Another is that regular movement boosts natural antioxidants that kill celldamaging free radicals.  Poor circulation: Sitting decreases blood flow to your lower legs, putting you at risk for blood clots (DVT).  Mushy abs/glutes and tight hips: When you’re standing, your abs hold you up, giving them a workout. If you’re sitting, they don’t have to do much! Same for your glutes. Hip flexors become tight if you’re not upright. This can affect balance and increase your risk of falling.  Brain fog: Movement pumps blood to your brain, keeping you clear and energized.  Neck, back and shoulder strain: Craning your neck forward all day and slouching over a keyboard puts a lot of strain on your upper body. Wonder why you have those knots in your shoulder muscles? Look no further than the way you sit at a desk. If you’d like Those Years Back… Depending on your work situation, you may or may not have the flexibility to make all of the environmental changes that will support your body. But you can make lifestyle changes in your home/ workplace that can help you hang on to those extra years. Here are some suggestions to get you started:  Get a standing or treadmill desk.  Get up at least every half-hour and walk around (bonus points for getting a

Reasons Why to Restore Missing

Teeth

by Dr Ritika Arora Dr. Ritika Arora MDS – Cosmetic Dentist & Implanotologist (Aesthetic Smiles Dental Clinic)

D

o you have missing teeth? Are you one of the numerous adults that have lost their teeth do to gum disease, accidental trauma, failed root canals, decay, etc.? Missing teeth can affect your self-esteem and cause you to miss out on your favorite foods. So what is the solution you may ask? Dental implants can raise your self-confidence again as they look and feel just like your own teeth. Dental implants could be the best option for you. Just what are the perks of dental implants over other procedures for missing teeth? Here are 6 benefits that dental implants have to offer: Reason #1- Closest Looking To Natural Healthy Teeth They are sturdy and also secure and can replace a missing tooth. It fits as well as looks like a natural tooth. No more anxiety over dentures slipping or falling out. You are able to keep you teeth in place like natural teeth instead of a having them removable and keeping them in a cup. You can brush, floss, and take care of them like real teeth. Reason #2- Long Lasting Dental implants are a long-term option. Traditional, tooth-supported oral bridges simply last for 5 to 7 years, as well as with proper treatment usually ten years. However eventually they may need to be switched out. While dental implants might need periodic changes,

30

they can last a lifetime when properly placed and also looked after with time. Reason #3- Keeps Your Face Shape And Smile Intact A face without teeth could sag as well as show up submerged and can make you look older. Dental implants permit you to maintain the all-natural form of your face and smile. Reason #4- Keeps Your Jaw Bone Healthy Did you know that leaving vacant spaces in your mouth after losing a tooth or more can lead to added wellness concerns, such as the loss and degeneration of some of your jawbone? Then as the jawbone wears away, it loses the firmness and support. Dental implants can prevent bone loss as the root applies pressure as natural teeth, unlike denture that accelerate bone loss. Reason #5- Eating And Speaking Dental implants make it easy to speak like just like normal natural teeth. Dentures are not easy to speak with and it can be difficult to pronounce things and hard for people to understand you. Eating is more enjoyable as you can consume your favorite meals. Dental implants are placed in position and fused naturally with your jawbone, suggesting your new tooth will not move, shift or click.

Reason #6- No Cavities Tooth cavities cannot happen in dental implants or tooth replacements. You will still need to have your yearly exams and clean and care for you gums and mouth daily just like you do with your real teeth. We Are Accepting New Patients Aesthetic Smiles Dental Clinic. Dr. Ritika Arora ensures outstanding solution by constantly finding out brand-new modern technology as well as keeping pace with the new advances in the field of dental care. LL | food Chef Around The Corner Anand Morwani

BREWING A FLAVOURFUL STORM by Zeba Akhtar

B

ringing flavors all the way from Europe, meet Anand Morwani, co-founder and Head chef at Brewbot, Andheri West. With a degree in entrepreneurship and international hospitality management from “Les Roches”, Switzerland and culinary education from ‘Le Corden Bleu’ Institute of Culinary Arts, London, Anand brings an amalgamation of technique and skill to the tables of Brewbot. “When I was in 7th grade, I told my mom that I wanted to own a restaurant. I always knew that food was something

I wanted to play with all my life. I have grown up in a household that itself was a boiling pot of flavors. Been exposed to Mahrashtrian, Sindhi as well as international cuisines ever since a very

32

early age, I was always attracted towards food. While growing up, I always took charge of most parties which my parents used to host.” With a determination to bring gourmet cuisine to the city, Anand moved back from the UK where he worked for over 2 years. After moving, he began developing his recipes and was on the lookout for a plan for a one of kind restaurant. It was during this phase, that Brewbot happened. “Brewbot for us was initially only about food, because getting a micro brewery

license is not that easy. Today we are the only micro brewery in Andheri West, and the response from the local community has been phenomenal. Localities like Lokhandwala, Link Road,

Versova etc are buzzing with young people who are always on the lookout for something new, and we wanted them to be proud of us. Beer as a topic needed to be explored better, and which is why after international research, we came up with our micro brewery. We want to break the stereotype of international flavours, and our aim is to develop flavours specific to this city, something that we too can flaunt. Everything from grain to glass happens in house.” With a smile on his face, he meticulously took me through the process of beer brewing at Brewbot. The varieties include Skywalker- Kolsch, Belgian Saison, Mojo Rising and Black Mamba. Each beer has a different flavor and is processed in its own unique way. Currently he is all set to come up with a more beer centric menu where beer as an ingredient will hold more prominence. Eventually, the plan is to bring in a variety of beer cocktails as well. “Not everyone has the palate for beer, but this does not mean that they can’t enjoy amazing beer cocktails. Our aim is to try and cater to the needs of different types of foodies”, says Anand as he takes me through his plans for the future. Having gained a lot of training in Switzerland and London, he wanted to dive into cooking head first, so that he could sharpen and implement his skill, and every kitchen staff at Brewbot is efficiently trained by him personally.

“If you would ask me of my signature ingredient, then it would for sure be Star Anise. Also, salt, I believe is not just the essence of food, but of life in general. As much as I respect classics, my idea is not to just keep replicating them. I like taking elements from a classic and adding a unique touch to it myself. My frenzy for fresh produce goes to the extent that a lot of the fresh produce for Brewbot is sourced from my organically cured farm in Lonavala. We want our lettuce, spinach, rosemary, thyme, parsley etc to be the best and the most fresh. Even when it comes to meat, nothing goes on to the plate unless it has been brined for at least 12 hours. For me, effort matters a lot, even if it means going from a fifty to a fifty one percent efficiency rate.” Anand’s pick for the top 5 dishes at Brewbot include, lobster mac n cheese, eggplant parmigiana ,48 hrs pulled pork sliders, pulled chicken or chipotle chicken poutine and The Big Bot, their house special tenderloin burger. Taking care of a 5000 square feet massive restaurant, and making sure that every customer leaves with a satisfied smile seems to be an oddly tiring job, but Anand seems to be managing that with perfect ease, which is what’s drawing large crowds to Brewbot within such a short span of time. So next time you want a perfectly balance meal, or are on the lookout for a great Sunday brunch option, you know where to head!

Not everyone has the palate for beer, but this does not mean that they can’t enjoy amazing beer cocktails

KSHITIJ ’15 MITHIBAI COLLEGE FEST

S

VKM’s Mithibai College and Roposo present Kshitij’15, their annual international intercollegiate cultural festival, which ranks as one of the best college cultural festivals in town. Kshitij’s mascot is a doubleheaded phoenix, the majestic bird which is reborn from its own ashes. Today, in its ninth year, like its mascot, Kshitij has soared high and far, crossing new horizons with every passing year. Each year, the organizing team of Kshitij comes up with innovative themes and events to serve as a platform for students across the country to come and showcase their talents and skills. The festival garners a footfall of over 40,000 students each year, with participation from over 150 colleges and several international entries too.

The theme for the popular festival is Legion of Legends this year. The Chairperson of the festival, Parth V. Bhanushali said “It was only after the sudden death of the Missile Man Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, that we realized how short and unpredictable life is. It was when we lost a gem of our own that

36

we realized that people who inspire us and change our lives are not going to be around forever, but their teachings and their work will forever be engraved in our minds and hearts. To pay tribute to innumerable such legends who have contributed to revolutionize our world, the organizing team of Kshitij 2015 have taken an initiative to reminisce the forgotten legends and thank the ones amongst us, by having a legendary theme for our festival.” This year, the festival witnessed a grand launch at the hands of the star cast of Brothers; Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandes and Siddharth Malhotra along with Rajiv Masand as the host. Akshay Kumar appreciated the efforts and hard work put in by the workforce of Kshitij in putting up a festival as grand as Kshitij. Recently, the star cast of the blockbuster movie Shaandaar held the exclusive launch of their title song “Shaam Shaandaar” with the theme launch of Kshitij’15. Alumni Shahid Kapoor and the stunning Alia Bhatt performed to the title track of their recently launched film. Rising star Alia Bhatt stated that “I wish Kshitij was happening right now because it is the perfect occasion. Kshitij is so Shaandaar, so why can’t we be Shaandaar with Kshitij?” Such encouraging words sent a wave of pride

and pleasure over the hearts of Kshitijites who put their sweat and blood in making their festival a great success. Each year, Kshitij hosts a plethora of events in various categories such as performing arts, literary arts, gaming and sports, photography, management and so on. Their events like Scorch the Floor, Just A Minute, Hog-a-thon, Kronum and many more are the unique selling points of the festival that sets it apart from other college festivals. This year, the organizing team decided to take a step further and expand their festival across the country by hosting a national level singing event called ‘The Unlocal Vocal’. With the national event adding to their crown, Kshitij is sure to leave its mark on the map of India. KEEP GOING No matter what you do, no matter how many times you screw up and think to yourself “there’s no point to carry on”, no matter how many people tell you that you can’t do it- Keep Going. Don’t quit. Don’t quit, because a month from now you will be that much closer to your goal than you are now. Yesterday you said tomorrow. Make today count. These are some beautiful words to motivate you in achieving your success. In case if there is something which is refraining you from doing things for yourself, the two quotes given below might help you: “Lack of Direction, not lack of Time is the problem, we all have twenty-four hours day” – Zig Zagler I have seen a lot of people cribbing about not doing what they always wanted to do. But the thing is if you always wanted to achieve something for so long, how you can not have time for it. There might be two reasons for it; one- due to unpredictable situations a person is not able to achieve things. Two- the person is directionless. We all have same number of hours in a day, how we make use of them depends on us. A lot of things can be achieved if we have directions or if we have set goals and a clear mind about what we really want to achieve in our life or in a day. It may be a small thing initially, but eventually may lead us to achieve the things which once were our dreams. “I don’t know the key to success but the key to failure is trying to please everyone” – Bill Cosby You will end up forgetting yourself in order to please everyone. Stop doing that right away. You cannot make everyone happy, even if you most desperately want it. You need to be happy yourself first. You try to make so many people happy that at times you are the only one who is surrounded by sadness, stress and depression. People are responsible for their own happiness. You must have the key to your own happiness. So stop pleasing everyone around you and make time for yourselfa small moment into a big moment- that power is with us. Make use of it. You should be your own driving force. by Divya Panday

AAMAD REVIVING AN AGE OLD DANCE FORM - Ishita Sharma

by Zeba Akhtar

WHEN I FIRST HEARD ABOUT ‘AAMAD’, I THOUGHT IT TO BE ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE ART AND DANCE STUDIOS WHICH KEEP PROPPING UP IN MUMBAI EVERY NOW AND THEN. BUT I WAS WRONG. TAKEN FROM THE WORD ‘AAMAD’ WHICH MEANS ‘OPENING’ OR ‘ENTRY’ IN KATHAK DANCE FORM TERMINOLOGY, THE PLACE EXUDES AN AURA OF ITS OWN.

W

e caught up with Ishita Sharma, the actress-dancer brainchild behind Aamad, and here’s how she contextualized her journey. With a formal degree in Human Development and belonging to an exclusively service oriented background, Ishita had never thought of taking up dance formally, leave alone building up an entire set up and organization around dance forms and art. “I have been learning kathak for over 12 years now. It is rigorous and beautiful and requires an extreme amount of dedication. However, as a dance form or even as form of art, it was never as popular as it should be. Most people think that classical dance is drab and boring. It was this notion which I wanted to change. According to me, kathak, and for that matter of fact, most classical dance forms are extremely cool and fun because they tell a story, and have a deeper context. In fact, when I used to learn kathak, my teacher used to instruct us to perform in such a way that it could be understood both by a lay person, as well as someone who has an intense knowledge of the dance form. It is with this in mind that the notion of Aamad materialized for me.” Ishita began her endeavor to change the way people looked at classical dance forms and she feels that the name ‘Aamad’ was the most befitting because

40

it made people curious. She would be asked repeatedly about its meaning and she believes that it was a good way of spreading awareness about kathak. With Aamad completing a year, the journey for Ishita was not strewn with flowers all along. Having no prior experience of running an organization, there were a large number of road blocks initially. However, she believes that it was just a phase and gradually the word began to spread and the response today is phenomenal. “I was never really too worried about the outcome. All I knew was that this venture makes me happy. When I first began, I had only one student, but that would also get me excited and fill me with joy at the thought of being able to practice and train someone else in such an amazing art form.” Situated in one of the quaint and cozy old bungalows of Aram Nagar, the Aamad studio epitomizes art and its tranquility. Apart from kathak, other art forms such as zumba, tai-chi, kung-fu, kalari, as well as social dance sessions are a part of Aamad’s classes. Yoga as well as healing sessions are also incorporated within their regular classes. In addition, different forms of workshops and pop sessions keep happening time and again. “My idea is to maintain a strict quality control over content. Aamad, for me is

November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

not just any other performing arts center, it has a spirit of its own which is why the workshops and performances are few in number but make up for quantity with their amazing quality”, says Ishita who has big dreams for Aamad. “While I fervently believe that no matter what you do, every venture has a destiny of its own and just the same way Aamad will carve out its own niche, but at the same time, I have massive, almost unrealistic plans. I want Aamad to grow to an extent where we have at least 4 huge studios, where there are separate wings for each category of art, and then eventually go international.” With over 5 different art forms within just a year of launch, Ishita and her efforts with Aamad have already been creating waves!

If you wish to be a part of Aamad and learn new art forms along with interacting with different people, you could get in touch with them on Facebook or write an email to ishitta. sharrma@yahoo.co.in!

The Hooders Express

M

eet Manju Panchal, a resident of Lokhandwala, who teaches us how to not give up on things we are passionate about.

An Artist’s Story by Sherene Kharawala

“I’ve been painting since childhood, but I went onto taking up the science stream because everybody did that around me. After my marriage for personal reasons I did not take up a full time job which gave me a lot of time to devote to my hobby. I love and enjoy my work and it has become such an intricate part of my lifestyle that I could paint for hours at a stretch and not realize the time fly by. Over a period of time I’ve realized that whatever you love to do you must give serious thought to that particular part of your life and you must do what you really want to do because it gives you contentment that nothing else can bring. Also, it takes care of a lot of other things happening in your life, be it health, your personal life, combating negativity or complaints with regards to a particular aspect of life because if you feel happy, the world looks like a happy place to live in. It gives you a lesser chance to dwell on the complexities of life. My love for art makes me feel like it has given me an identity and a focus in life. Many may not want to take up a full time corporate job but if every person discovers his hidden/apparent talent, or a hobby that they are gifted with and begins to concentrate on this god-given gift it can change their lives for the better. I am a self motivated artist who loves to paint everyday but I must credit some of this derived inspiration from a ‘Daily painting movement’ that I had come across on the internet where I learnt that there are some artists who paint everyday and how they have grown in the field of arts. This gave me food for thought that no matter how busy each day is I must steal a few hours in the day to make atleast one painting, a sketch, or even just a drawing and continue to practice and develop my skill each and every day. I also read a lot of biographies on artists to keep me inspired and motivated. I take up art workshops, sell my pastel and charcoal paintings online, have held exhibitions around Mumbai, and make customized name plates on order. To anyone out there who wants to do something of their own, there is no shortcut to success. Sincerity and dedication are the golden habits to inculcate if you want to carve a niche for yourself.” November 2015 | Volume 1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition) 41

THE HOMEMADE CAFE Rekindling the Home Made Taste by Zeba Akhtar

S

he’s been in the television industry for more than 13 years and after getting fame through a variety of shows, this busy actress has now turned entrepreneur with her first venture, “The Homemade Café” situated on Link Road in Oshiwara.

Simple who seemed chirpy and excited about her latest venture. Rebuilt off an old shop, the café took around 5 months to be prepped up, and now stands pretty with beautiful flowers, wall art and tiny trinkets all around to give it an old world and lazy café feeling. Why the name ‘The Homemade Café’, we asked? “I wanted the place to not be like one of the regular coffee shops with blaring music and an impersonal feel. I wanted the place to have an easy going and relaxed feel, and what can be more relaxed than home? Hence the name, ‘The Homemade Café’. I want it to become one of those hangouts where people can easily drop in and just have a nice and quiet time. Sit down with a book and have some me time, or just spend some quality time chit chatting with friends”, explained Simple.

A joint venture of three women from the media industry, ‘The Homemade Café’ is the brainchild of Simple, and her friends Aditi, and Vatsala. “Aditi and I have been friends for ages, and we mostly travel together. It was during one of my trips to Spain and Italy that the idea of a café sprung up. We would sit for hours in one of the quaint cafes off a cobbled street and just laze around. I wanted to recreate the whole feel and concept in Mumbai, and hence ‘The Homemade Café’ happened”, says

42

True to its name, the café does have pieces of home, and each of the three partners have gotten special items from their own houses to add to the feel of the place. The menu is easy and light, with mostly continental flavors, while the desserts are freshly baked every day. The café attempts to keep evolving and experimenting which is

why there are daily specials which keep changing each day, just to see what clicks with the customers. But all this beauty would not have existed had it not been for the hard work of these three phenomenal ladies. “This has been my most exciting venture and hence in order to devote myself fully to this I had to give up on my other projects. But I am more than happy to do it because I want to see it grow. I make it a point to look into all the details and also to interact with customers so that they feel a part of the set up. This is my first attempt at being an entrepreneur and I would like to not hurry things up. There are a lot of ideas lined up, but I only want to take them up in good time”, beamed Simple as she took me through the menu. For those hooders who would love to have a taste of European flavours in an easy setting, The Homemade Café is your place to go.

LL | community Entrepreneur Of The Hood Madhav Kabra by Zeba Akhtar

“I

had two options in life. Either I could work hard now, or party later. Or I could party now and keep slogging for the rest of my life, and I decided to choose the former.” Meet Madhav Kabra, the 19 entrepreneur of the hood, whose startup Platino Laundry in Oshiwara is all set to mix quality service with cutting edge technology. What exactly is Platino Laundry, you may ask? Well, his is a home delivered laundry service, backed by the best technology and finest of products, and within a few weeks of launch, is already gathering great responses from residents all across different hoods.

On being asked about the motivation behind the business, the 19 year old business student from Jai Hind College answered, “I had been to a meeting with my father as a part of being inducted into the art of doing proper business. It is here that I got to know about the best technology which goes into state of the art laundries and hence an idea struck my mind. Why not combine this with great service and have a business of one’s own?”

44

And thus with detailed discussions in the family, and a little help and support from friends and family, Madhav launched Platino Laundry in October 2015. Smart enough to not take any major risks at the moment, Madhav is taking things slow for now. Instead of spending huge sums of money on publicity, he is going via the word of mouth marketing route and has also been promoting his business on social media, which has garnered him good responses. That apart, he knows how to keep it simple for the start, and will soon go into meticulous technological backing. For now, orders are placed over the phone and pick up happens within a day, and delivery usually takes around 2 to 3 days. He personally looks into all of these details to make sure that the quality of service is not compromised at any step. “Soon we will go into mechanized orders and will also have an automated pick up service, along with a mobile phone based application which will make ordering even more easier. We realize that we do have a lot of competition around, but that’s not a deterring factor at all. In fact it only inspires me to do better work every day.”

November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

Platino Laundry’s ethics has been backed by Madhav’s personal beliefs, which is why they already have a CSR initiative where while doing pick -ups for laundry, they also receive old clothes from their clients which are then delivered to the underprivileged. “Setting this up was not an easy task, especially for someone as inexperienced and as young as myself. But I was pretty sure that once I put my heart into things, I would definitely ace it. When I see all my friends having fun and parting during leisure times, there is always a strong urge to do the same, but I have a business to take care of, and I need to devote my time to other things. But every time I see my family feel proud because of me, it fills me with energy that yes, I am taking a step in the right direction.”

LOTUS PETROL PUMP

T

Chronicles of the Hood

by Zeba Akhtar

here are some spaces that exist, and quietly turn important. Mostly, the reason is unknown. Such is the case of the Lotus Petrol Pump in Andheri West. Whenever I think about it, it reminds me of the case of interchangeable signs and words, such as how easily we mix chocolates for Cadbury, photocopy machine for Xerox, and mineral water for Bisleri. The same goes for this landmark called Lotus Petrol Pump. Shaped like a lotus, this place has been around for years and has gradually become almost like a symbol of the hood. Used in off hand references, most people use this as a land mark while giving directions and explaining any address. Almost every hooder living in Andheri West is familiar with the Lotus Petrol Pump. Falling at the intersection of Andheri and

Jogeshwari, the Lotus Petrol Pump is not something that you can miss. The artistic shape sets it apart from most petrol pumps and you cannot help but wonder why or how did such a structure come about, and that too for something as mundane as a petrol pump. Well, such is the hood of Andheri West, with hidden surprises and stories in every nook and corner!

ANDHERI HAS A LOT OF LIGHT AND

MANOHAR IYER KEEPS IT ALIVE by Subhashini Sheopuri

M

anohar Iyer breathes, eats, drinks, sleeps, walks and talks nothing but music. Through his brain-child KEEP ALIVE, he has been striving to resurrect the golden era of Hindi film music and perpetuate the great musical works of the legendary maestro. Manohar is highly respected for his pioneering efforts and his encyclopaedic knowledge on vintage music and also for his fine human qualities. Not only music lovers but also legends like Anil Biswas, Naushad, O P Nayyar, Khayyam, Ravi, Pradeep, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Hasrat Jaipuri, Dilip Kumar have all vouched for this through their gracious presence in his shows and sincere appreciation for his dedicated

and selfless service to music. The KEEP ALIVE live show is a treat to the mind and soul and has often been an emotional journey for the listener as the life and events of the great legends spring to life in front of them in a neverseen-before manner. As each nugget is unearthed carefully breathing new life to ‘keep it alive’, the curious crowd is drawn into his mystical realm of never ending harmony. Manohar Iyer has truly brought about a revolution and created history that will live on for a number of years and every show of

founder of the musical organisation KEEP ALIVE, will have none of it. He has succeeded in making his own rules and his own magical world to live in. Born in a traditional Iyer household in Mumbai, the Mecca of Indian Cinema, Manohar Iyer grew up highly entranced by the Hindi film songs of yore – the 40s, 50s, 60s… All along his growing years, he nurtured a secret desire to break free and enter the world of music and poetry in a truly fulfilling manner. After serving the I D B I for 16 years, he quit his job in 1994 for transcending his musical dreams into reality. Through his brainchild KEEP ALIVE, he has been striving to resurrect the glorious mellifluous past, perpetuate the great musical works of the legendary maestros and keep their melodious memories alive in the hearts and minds of music lovers. In the last eighteen years, the organisation has not only grown in strength and stature but also in its vision and passion. What started out as a modest club of a few hundred has metamorphosed now into a large, warm, enthusiastic and eager group of similar minded members (over 2,500 in number) with a ravenous appetite for taste of good old music. KEEP ALIVE is regarded more as a mission and a service dedicated to

Don’t just go through music but grow through music

46

his is only a consolidation of his ideals and beliefs. His message to music lovers is, “Don’t just go through music but grow through music”. It will be an understatement to say that while others dream of living with passion, Manohar Iyer has been living his dream with passion. It is easy to be a face in the crowd; to get lost among millions; to go with the flow and follow the trends set by others. But Manohar Iyer,

preserving antique musical gems rather than a commercial proposition. The organisation is a family that consists of musicians and singers and well-wishers galore. What makes KEEP ALIVE so special? It is a 4-hour long programme mostly in the form of a musical biography of a legend or on varied themes / subjects which have inspired film music . Live rendering of songs (a mix of rare and remote, forgotten and less heard and popular songs) by trained and talented young artistes are interspersed with rare and interesting anecdotes related to the song and the legend. The well - researched music programmes are a unique fusion of entertainment and enlightenment!

Positive Parents... The HOW???? by Nivedita Mataliya

I

Nivedita Mataliya is a counseling psychologist specializing in children and relationship counseling

n the last article we discussed the importance of positivity. Now, the more pertinent question is HOW? So here we go…. Be Aware of Your Negative Self Talk Self talk is what you are constantly telling yourself. If you are incessantly telling yourself any of these, “why me”, “this always happens to me”, “everyone is so mean”, “I am the victim”, then you are looking at the black dot in life. Remember YOUR BELIEF IS YOUR REALITY. Try and make an effort to become aware of what kind of self talk you engage in throughout the day. What do you tell yourself when you get up or when you are faced with challenges. This habit is the most difficult to change, but also it is the most important to imbibe. This is the foundation of all things positive. This is also going to form the base for your child’s thinking. Practice, Practice, Practice I can’t stress it enough, practice. It is very simple. If you have excess flab or are unfit what do you have to do? You have to regularly and consistently go to the gym, control your diet and

48

change your lifestyle to lose all the flab. Similarly when your thinking is unhealthy or unfit for your happy existence, you have to visit your thinking everyday and train yourself to think positively. It is an art that requires practice but once learnt reaps huge rewards Have Faith The bad news is there is no magic wand that will make you positive or make all your woes go away. The good news is that mans faith and will power is more powerful than any magic wand. Having faith and positive self belief helps us persevere in adverse situations. This Too Shall Pass Remember, no matter how terrible and unbearable the situation seems to you right now, it will eventually pass. Yes, it will eventually pass. Focus on the Solution Not the Problem If you focus on the solution you are thinking If you focus on the problem you are worrying. Become solution focused not problem focused. Practice breathing, relaxation and meditation

November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

Exercise Exercise helps the brain release endorphins which are associated with positive emotions such feeling happy, energetic and resilient. It also increases focus and concentration. All of this helps us feel positive. Take One Day at a Time Sometimes it is best not to brood too much into the past or worry too much about the future. It is best to focus on how you can make the best of today Start Your Day with a Smile A smile is so beautiful; it can brighten everybody around you. it will also send positive signals to your brain. Unwind: Do Something That You Enjoy It is a must. You have to give yourself a break, step back and unwind. When you as a parent will bring this positive approach into your life, your children will also adopt the same. You are after all their first and most important teacher so lead by example. Happy Parenting. “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” – Winston Churchill

LL | kids & parenting The Prepared Environment in the Montessori Classroom

A

Montessori classroom is commonly referred to as the Prepared Environment. In the Prepared Environment, a community of children from ages 2.5years to 6 years, all in the first stage of development learn social, academic, and creative skills while developing into independent beings. The montessori environment is characterized by its abundance of order, beauty, accessibility, and availability of real materials as opposed to toys. The

50

classroom is filled with an array of sequential learning activities. They are displayed on open shelves, in order, without clutter. Each unique activity has a purpose and special location. Children gain independence from the prepared environment as they move about choosing their own work and making their own decisions. The high degree of order in the Prepared Environment directly correlates to the unique way in which children naturally learn and absorb information. The Montessori Adult guides the children and plays a vital role in the creation and maintenance of the specially prepared environment. The Practical life activities groups are: Care of the Person: Daily human activities like washing hands, dressing ourselves that fulfill the child’s need for independence. Care of the Environment: Sweeping, dusting, and keeping the environment around him clean, imbibes a sense of respect for all labour. Grace and Courtesy: Culture specific activities of basic social behavior like greeting, how to

November 2015 | Volume1 Issue 7 | Living Local Mumbai (Andheri West Edition)

talk in a classroom, how to offer, how to sit. This brings in the child positive social behavior. Control of movement: Walking on the line and the Silence Activity develop co-ordination of movement, will power, and social awareness as these are group activities. Why the Prepared Environment? The human child has a great desire to be independent and express himself through speech, movement and exploration. The deep seated need of the child to “do it himself is met by the activities of Practical Life. He has freedom to choose his own work and repeat it till he attains perfection. Dr. Montessori saw the hands as the instruments of intelligence. Thus in the Montessori environment, each activity is child-sized and presented on an individual basis, giving the child an opportunity to work independently and intelligently. The child also is developing a Will, the power to make a choice and so is given the freedom to choose his own individual work and work freely along with his peer group, thus strengthening his self-control and will. Every human being has to adapt himself to his social environment to become a useful, contributing member of his group. All Montessori activities involve physical movement and develop co-ordination of gross and fine motor skills and a sense of equilibrium. The Montessori classroom has a Mixed Age group, making it possible for children from the ages of 2.5 to 6 years to work together in perfect harmony, learning from each other, reflecting real life situations. The influence of the prepared environment in the Montessori setting is what allows children to take pride in their discoveries and forms the foundation for a lifetime love of learning.

TAROTSCOPE

YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2015

THE YEAR AHEAD FOR SCORPIO Happy Birth Anniversary! In the recent past, you have made some major changes to your life, perhaps under pressure. Now, in those very areas, you are going to see an upliftment, some excitement, and a very good indication that you are regaining control over those situations. Health will benefit from taking care. Finances will be good, though occasionally challenging. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.) ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Your enthusiastic approach to life will carry all days in November, whether you feel yourself in control or not. This positive attitude of yours will accomplish much more in the larger picture, garnering you some surprise appreciation. Practice calmness and your health will be better than before. TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): In November, draw on your own sense of stability to keep yourself working at optimum. While circumstances may be challenging, they are actually encouraging you to discover a larger picture. So practice calmness, and you will do excellently. Drink plenty of water and follow your usual regime of good health. GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): Your bright quickness will empower you to deal with whatever November shows up. You will be quite successful in everything you do. Remember to stay focused on your ideals and goals, and don’t let yourself be diverted even for a lark. Cardiovascular exercises of even tempo will give your physical energies the necessary grounding. CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): Your warmly emotional nature may need protection and care in November, so ask for help and enjoy its double benefit. Not only will you receive that which will make you happy, you will also be privy to the way people who are different from you think and operate, which will be a learning experience. Try new types of health-care to upgrade your routine.

52

LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): November will be a fairly exciting and active month for you. Inside, you will feel completely aligned to your life’s calling, and externally, too, you will experience some marvelous synchronicities that may prove you right. Make sure you eat familiar food and maintain a familiar exercise routine for your physical health to be as happy. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): Take a step back from actively engaging your thought processes, this November. Instead, engage in observing and culling information from what is going on around you. Nothing will be untoward; it will only be calmer for you to maintain a bit of a distance. Focus on physical activities that are calming and grounding for you. LIBRA

(September 23rd-October 22nd):

Much happiness, wisdom and activity await you this November. You are inherently inclined to harmony, so use that capacity to see even the prickliest situations as an appeal for a higher understanding. You can experience yourself as a winner, now. Encourage your health by focusing on feeling good and refreshed.

SCORPIO

(October 23rd November 22nd):

November is an exciting month in general, but since all of it is not about you, feel free to choose your battles! Uneasy verbal engagements need not escalate into quarrels, so step back and decide to learn from the differences. Choose to look after your health as a priority. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st):

November is exciting and invigorating for you, though not much is about you. You can actually step back and relax in the knowledge that it is okay to just watch life unfold, and perhaps even just as exciting. There will be enough of your own activity to keep you busy to not go chasing after chimeras. Try a few new health routine ideas. CAPRICORN

(December 22nd–January 19th):

November will challenge your practical wisdom… and lose. So, whatever happens is situational, and it will be simple for you to see them as the end-result of earlier processes. Treat mistakes as opportunities to put things right and enhance your skills. Pay attention to your diet and maintain regularity for good health. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): In November, everything you do, think and say will fall just right. This is a gift of truth, so utilize this opportunity to be your truest self living in your ideal world, and watch how that attitude influences situations around you. Be alert that manipulation doesn’t enter into the equations. Do what you think is best for your own health, with utmost sincerity and calmness. PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): Practice circumspect retreat in November. Step back from becoming emotionally invested in situations. With this distance, you will gain more knowledge about the variety life offers. You will also be subconsciously connecting strands of emerging lifepatterns, and this is best done in calmness and quiet. Your health routines need also be in the space of meditative slowing down and building awareness.
