Reggae Sky in silk & wool

Cheer Sand in silk & wool

Reggae – Whimsical yet distinct, orderly yet haphazard, peaceful yet powerful…Reggae. Inspired by the designer’s love of music and his own experience playing classical guitar, this simple yet sophisticated design evokes much emotion as the name so aptly applies. Cheer – An ongoing theme for this artist is the belief that there is beauty everywhere and life is simple. The intersecting patterns and colors seemingly sewn together, just as days converge together to create our lives.

Fire & Ice smoke in silk & wool

Fire & Ice – A perfect blend of subtle style and Art Deco edge, this is for the abstract art lover at heart. The designer used saturated, vibrant tones woven in silk against a cool wool backdrop to create complexity both visually and texturally. Notice how the seemingly obvious circular design elements are really not circles at all, and are made of various entwined shapes to enhance the effect of abstraction and illusion. Fire & Ice is modern art made for the ages.

Looking Ahead I hope this letter finds you healthy and safe. Happy New Year to you all; I wish everyone a healthy and happy 2021. This is our first issue of 2021 and I am excited for what’s ahead for Living Luxe and our journey. I know these are challenging times, but I am trying to remain positive and share the kindness that is around all of us. I spent the winter break with my children. We went for long walks and enjoyed each other’s company. They got creative and painted beautiful art pieces. It brought me such joy to spend so much quality time with them, even though it was so different than winter breaks past. Our team is working tirelessly, and I appreciate their dedication to Living Luxe. Without them, I would never have been able to create this beautiful magazine to share with all of you, and for that I am very grateful. Thank you again to all of our loyal clients, contributors and readers for being such a huge part of our magazine. I know that COVID-19 has affected all of us in different ways, and I feel so blessed that we were able to continue to publish our magazine and create beautiful content and amazing stories for you. We were also very blessed to grow our presence with various collaborations, including with airlines and hotel chains, and their checkout. I also wanted to share that I will be continuing my Instagram live series every Thursday night at 8 p.m. EST. Please feel free to join us and our fabulous guest celebrities, designers and business owners, and be sure to stay for incredible giveaways you can win by participating in Living Luxe trivia. I wish everyone a fabulous and healthy spring! Warmest regards,

Time for a Refresh When I asked our contributors in this issue to tell me what they do to rejuvenate or revitalize their minds, bodies or homes for spring, I was impressed with their responses — they each have great ideas for ways to refresh for the new season. Designer Rosalia Fazzari says she changes out her accessories and decor, while lifestyle editor Jeanne Beker is going to practice old hobbies. Their responses made me think about what I do when the snow melts and the days get warmer. I’d love to say I do a deep spring cleaning in my house — a floor-to-ceiling dust and scrub — but who am I kidding. (I never seem to have time for that seasonal deep clean — I should probably put it in my day planner.) So, instead of fixating on endless chores around the house, this year I’ve decided I’m going to focus on how to get into a better mood come spring. I want to leave the dark days of winter behind and invigorate my spirit — I want to feel better emotionally and mentally, and ready myself for brighter days ahead. Not too surprisingly, I haven’t come up with anything truly revolutionary yet, so I’ve decided to set some goals while I ponder ways to get rid of the winter blahs. This spring I hope to smile more and feel happier in my own skin. I’ll continue to go for socially distanced walks with my mom — it’s nice to get away from the laptop and get some fresh air, and I like spending that time with her. I’ll binge-watch really great television shows with my husband, Peter. We’re always happy sitting in front of the TV and love nothing more than getting immersed in a fabulous series. I’ll chat with friends over Zoom with a glass of wine in hand. It’s nice to connect with mates I miss, and I’m always up for Moscato. Maybe where they’d rather be playing games online or watching Harry Potter movies on repeat, but they’re still up for art projects with their mother — thankfully. I’ll FaceTime my silly nephews, Sebastian and Nicholas. They always seem to fill my tank when I feel drained. And maybe I’ll finally take care of that neglected garden we put in a few years ago — fill it with big, beautiful blooms. You can’t feel anything but happiness when you have peonies growing outside your window. Whatever you’re wishing for spring — and however you’re planning on rejuvenating and revitalizing — I hope you remember to take good care of your mind. You can do that seasonal deep clean if it’s in your day planner but take care of yourself first. Enjoy the warmer days,

Jeff Buzbuzian of Knar Jewellery shares what’s happening in the world of fine jewellery, the shift toward yellow gold and the Knar experience. By Martha Beach

What are you noticing lately about what customers are looking for? After being in the industry for 43 years, it’s interesting to see trends moving back and forth. We are seeing high interest in bold yellow gold designs and natural-coloured diamonds. More importantly, people are wanting things that are unique, so they’re going out of their way to find artisans who create specialty items made with fine craftsmanship. When they look at their treasure, it puts a smile on their face knowing it was made just for them. When it comes to fashion choices, what’s something that stands out to you? Men have become much more fashionable; they want to express themselves. Years ago, men wore a watch and a ring, but that was about it. Now, for example, three of five men may be wearing multiple bracelets, and they’ll want those paired with their watches and other jewellery. Speaking of watches, we know they’ve been on fire for decades. Do you think that flame will continue to burn? It will continue because it is an art form. I see a watch as a companion object — you wear it, you take care of it, it tells you the time, it brings you joy. Not only that, but they can become heirlooms, rare objects, they have

spring — more than ever — we are ready for some excitement. No other shoe has as much fire in its sole as Christian Louboutin. Fashion should take you to another world and that’s exactly what Christian Louboutin’s fantastical footwear, with its distinctive red sole, can do. It’s been a favourite of fashionistas, celebrities and royalty for its extravagant designs and luxurious aesthetic. I fell I saw them. I love the uniqueness in design and use of colour. The Spring 2021 collection is no different — the exquisite, whimsical offerings ensure there’s something every shoe aficionado will love. From a young age, Christian Louboutin was fascinated by the power of women’s shoes and loved sketching them. He was especially interested in the way shoes have the ability to shape the silhouette. This season, he has designed the new Pic heel — its purpose is to make the foot look as though it were standing on its toes. This interesting design balances between an architectural metal pick and the delicacy of the shoe, all while beautifully highlighting the arch of the foot.

58

DRESS BY RVNG COUTURE

in love with Louboutin shoes the very first time

Christine Rezvanian Contributing Fashion Editor

Beautiful spring hues come in the form of fresh pastels. We love both the feminine kitten and fun open-toed heels. With hues of blue, yellow and pink, you can add one of the hottest fashion trends this spring to your collection. These delicious shades are the perfect way to add subtle hint of colour to any outfit.

Christian Louboutin takes some of the iconic designs and reimagines them for the everyday. The icy-cool blue tie-dye denim (across both men’s and women’s styles) is a refreshing yet timeless fashion staple that will add a lot of fun to your existing collection of flats and heels.

Prints are back this spring with a daring twist. With a fun combination of pony and textures, these styles are a great way to bring heels back to your spring wardrobe. With prints available in a chunky heel platform and slim stiletto, there is something for everyone, perfect for a dinner party or patio soirée. For the first time, the Kate pump is introduced into the Nudes family with a matching insole. Crafted entirely in nude nappa leather for a capsule collection, the iconic Kate pump features sophisticated lines, a pointed toe and a signature low cut.

If you’re not ready for heels yet, the Loubishark for both men and women is back. This fashion-forward, warm-weather must-have is designed with comfort and style in mind.

59

Louboutin frequently travels the world for shoe design inspiration. Many of the special editions he creates end up becoming collectors’ items, with limited-release locations and quantities. My favourite Christian Louboutin shoe from my personal collection is the Tigerspump from the Bhutan Treasure Collection released in Japan for Spring/Summer 2020. The designs in this collection were inspired by nature, sculptures and paintings of Bhutan, the small kingdom in the Eastern Himalayas.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Residents of 89 Avenue Road don’t just love the esteem that comes with their sought-after location, they’re enthralled with the details that make up the building’s façade and interior. The ultra-lavish 89 Avenue Road is more than a coveted address — it’s opening residents’ eyes to what life looks like at one of the city’s most luxurious and desired residences. It starts with the façade. The 20-storey narrow building doesn’t look like a typical Toronto condominium complex. Architect Richard Wengle wanted to move away from the traditionallooking building and bring in a pre-war design using luxe materials such as limestone, granite, marble and bronze. “It feels like it’s always been there. It’s very elegant looking. And because it’s narrow and tall, it’s interesting to look at. I used a stepping technique for the windows. It looks simple, but it was quite complex,” says Wengle. “We did want it to look and feel like a classic building, and we accomplished that.” The interiors are equally impressive. Frank Mazzotta, president of Armour Heights, says the project has shown positive customer satisfaction since its inception, and one of the main reasons is the incredible list of interior details and finishes. “Our residents appreciate the time that has been spent with them in the presentation gallery customizing their suites to their specific requests and needs. This is something that is unheard of in the industry.” They are most impressed with the level of offerings

that come standard in each suite, such as 10- to 12-inch ceilings, La Cornue gas ranges, home automation, Kohler and Kallista plumbing fixtures, the Miele experience appliance package, herringbone wood floors, closet organizers, heated flooring in washrooms and custom kitchens designed by Brian Gluckstein, who designed each suite and hand-selected everything, from doors to faucets. Much like Wengle’s classic inspiration for the building, Gluckstein says he too was taken by the 1930s and 1940s Art Deco-inspired Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue buildings in New York. “The parchment walls and fluted plaster panels on either side of the fireplace are very strong elements of that era. There’s a modern timelessness to the space because the designs date back 80 to 90 years, but are still so relevant today,” Gluckstein explains. When it comes down to it, it’s the details and materials that are most attractive to residents. “I would say the key to the drama of the design is found in the mix of materials, whether it’s the marble fireplace, linen glass on the screens, the blond cerused oak floors with brass inlay, the velvet of the furniture, or back-painted glass of the coffee table. Each of these components adds to the visual impact of the space, and, because the space is monochromatic, it relies even more on the details.” For more information, visit 89avenueyorkville.com.

TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY MEDICINE SHOULDN’T BE HELD BACK BY A 1949 BUILDING. That’s the challenge SickKids faces: we’re limited by our old building. The cornerstone was laid in 1949. Modern and up-to-date then, a beacon of civic pride for Toronto and Canada, our building now limits what we can do. Because of low ceilings, certain equipment doesn’t fit in patient rooms. Families find themselves in public spaces when they need privacy. Our old HVAC system doesn’t allow for the timely and precise temperature control some surgeries require. We need a building that accommodates everything we can now do for our patients. We need to build a new SickKids. And it’s going to take all of us. fundthefight.ca

tional and beautiful. Let’s be honest — we’re all spending most of our time at home these days. First Class Flooring continues to provide top-notch flooring services even during these tough times. Whether you’re looking for engineered, solid hardwood, unfinished wood, laminate or vinyl, the Etobicoke, Ont.-based business has your bases covered. President Ralph Debra notes this season’s colour choices are fairly similar to previous seasons in terms of colour, with most clients opting for light, neutral tones — with one big difference: “Grey tones have calmed down,” he says. The deep, solid grey colours are on the out. “Now, clients prefer a very light undertone of grey.” When it comes to style, the most surprising change is a throwback to the 1960s. “Parquet

It’s really cool.” He’s seen many clients opting for this geometric wooden mosaic flooring, whether herringbone, chevron or basket weave. “They won’t put it throughout the entire house,” he says. That would be a bit much. “Instead, they’ll TOP: Espresso lounge with reclaimed hemlock floor and wall feature. BOTTOM: Transitional wait area featuring the Bellini shag rag.

To top it off, what we’re seeing is brass inlaid boarder.” While business is far from normal, the team at First Class Flooring is adjusting to this new age of shopping. He says clients can shop online and browse through a series of products, and can even see how it looks in their own home using the magic of digital overlay. From First Class Flooring’s website, you can also book a one-on-one consultation, for which you’ll first complete a detailed questionnaire about your project, your style, your plan and your hopes for the flooring of your future. “So, by the time the appointment happens, it’s very streamlined,” he says. And in our day-and-age, that is business as usual.

What trends do you see coming down the pipe? What’s coming in window and door design, materials, innovations in the next year? Design has steadily been moving toward contemporary modernist styling with sharper lines and clean edges. I don’t see that going away any time soon. There are always product innovations in window and door hardware to provide additional functionality and design options. We are also seeing a bit more interest in pivot doors. While these have been popular in California, it’s only with the recent improvements in hardware that have allowed them to be used in our harsher climate, where we have a greater need to prevent air and water getting in. Joe Guida from Patterned Concrete told us everything we need to know about installing concrete walkways, patios and pool decks just in time for patio season. Living Luxe: Why concrete? Why should homeowners consider concrete for their walkways, driveways, patios and pool decks? Joe Guida, the president of Patterned Concrete, a North York,Ont.-based company specializing in high-quality architectural concrete: There’s nothing like high-quality architectural concrete. Of all the products on the market, concrete is the superior choice. It outperforms, has longevity, it’s easy to maintain and it’s like a work of art. We’ve been doing this for more than 40 years — Patterned concrete is not what we do, it’s who we are. Concrete is meant to work for the client. Every concrete installation is custom. Homeowners get to choose the colour, texture and finish they want from a wide array of options. It’s very versatile. The trend is often for concrete to look like natural stone, but whatever the homeowner envisions is what we can offer, whether it’s the look and feel of European cobblestone, herringbone or sidewalk slate. We can do acid washing, sand blasting, pebble washing — there are so many ways to use decorative concrete. It’s art on the ground — it’s meant to be enjoyed forever.

Concrete is obviously very versatile and quite maintenance-free, but is it something homeowners can select and install on their own? HIDE AND SEEK

One of Ontario’s most popular stores, The Hide House is a mainstay in the province and known throughout the country for its incredible collection of all things leather. Here’s the reason they always say, “It’s worth the drive to Acton.” By Robert Stewart

THE HIDE HOUSE

has a history as rich as its buttery leath-

er goods. Canada’s largest leather store started as a shipping and receiving warehouse for Beardmore & Co. — the biggest tannery in the British empire in the early 1900s. The story goes like this: There were three brothers Rufus, Zenas and Ezra Adams, from New York State, who came north to Canada looking for farmland. After they bought in 1842, a town emerged on their anchorage — the town was originally called Adamsville, however, as the town began to emerge in 1844, the name of the town was changed to Acton. In 1856, an ambitious businessman named George Beardmore arrived in Acton from Hamilton, Ont., after losing his tannery to fire — he was looking to rebuild and area since 1844. Another fire wiped out his second tannery in 1872, and 27 years later, Beardmore & Co. built a brick warehouse, which became known as the Hide House — rawhides were stored there before heading to the tannery for processing. (They also housed finished leather, which would be sent to other places by rail; the railway line was right beside the building.) At one-million square feet, it was certainly one of the largest tanning operations in the world. The warehouse would be sold to various buyers

She’s mastered the art of designing outdoor spaces and styling them on exterior projects. The terraces and backyards she’s designed all have something in common: They’re uniquely suited to each homeowner. “I always walk through the home to get a feel for the style and kind of decor used inside the house before I work on the outside,” says Aiken. “I really get a feel for what the homeowner wants from their terrace or yard, and what they need. Sometimes it’s all about fun and lounging, sometimes the focus is on dining. Whatever it is, the exterior is an extension of the interior living space, and I make it flow.” Besides her current services, Aiken has expanded the business to offer concierge services. For one homeowner, this means the family can stay at another of their residences while Aiken tends to everything

that needs to be done in their home’s interior and exterior. “I packed them up, then did everything from selecting linens to choosing the signature scent of their home. When they came back and walked inside, the fireplace was on, the Champagne was poured and they had a fridge full of food,” Aiken says. “They loved the service, and loved that they didn’t have to worry about the details — I had it all covered.” With warmer weather on the horizon, Aiken is ready for terrace and yard design services to ramp up. “I not only do pergolas, custom firepits, hot tubs, as well as live and artificial walls, but I can bring in lighting, remote-controlled blinds, kitchens and custom containers. We’re all spending more time outside and more time at home. Ensuring your outdoor space

MARKET MOVERS Daniela Mazzotta and Angelo Ferlisi are two friends and colleagues who recently decided it was time to merge their talents and open their own boutique real estate office. Forest Hill Kleinburg is the result of their determination and flair for selling spectacular homes. By Lisa van de Geyn

Situated at the corner of Islington Avenue and Nashville Road in the ultra-charming downtown area of Kleinburg village in Vaughan, Ont., sits a quaint grey house where Daniela Mazzotta and business partner Angelo Ferlisi have set up their new business. The long-time realtors and colleagues have been friends for years — their relationship dates back to high school. After deciding it was time to leave their previous brokerage, Mazzotta and Ferlisi knew what they wanted in their new business venture: Their ultimate goal was to open a real estate office that felt more familial and offered a more boutique-style service. “We we wanted that culture reflected in our new workplace. The focus for the duo now is on building their office with top-tier real-estate professionals who fit with the familial, close-knit feel they have already established. “Our office has a welcome feel — it’s not an intimidating place. Everyone will mesh, we’ll ensure everyone feels supported where you are not just another number,” Mazzotta says. Gopal proudly mentions two students — brothers — who weren’t doing well in school. “When I met them, they weren’t being given the proper attention in the classroom. Within two months of working with me, they each jumped two levels in their studies. could say that Ferris Rafauli’s monumental work speaks for itself, in tones so rich, loud and clear, it’s practically

deafening. The Canadian talent has cultivated a powerfully distinctive voice in architectural design that’s being both heard and celebrated on the global stage, and the grand masterpieces he’s continually creating are setting new standards when it comes to luxury lifestyle. Growing up in Oakville, Ont., Rafauli was in touch with his inner artist from the start, and his creative eye was lovingly nurtured by his supportive parents who inspired in him a strong sense of confidence. “Whether I wanted to be an artist or an athlete or a lawyer or a doctor, it was really irrelevant,” Rafauli tells me. “They were very supportive of the things that made me happy and allowed me to express myself with my God-given talents, as opposed to telling me what to do.” From helping his father pick the colour of his suit to advising his friend on the finishes of his car, good taste came naturally to Rafauli, and by the time he was 18, he was designing and building homes. In an arena in which business savvy counts for so much, Rafauli was able to bring an added bonus to the table: His strong sense of artistry. “For me, architecture and design — all things to do with artistic layering and detail — was something that came to me by innate nature, and then enhanced by a passion for the creation of these things, starting from a blank page to creating awe-inspiring expressions of art. And I look at what we do as art,” Rafauli explains. It’s no surprise that Rafauli’s artsy edge and expertise in the luxury realm peaked the curiosity of mighty music icon Drake, who was looking to build a unique home in Toronto’s exclusive Bridle Path

neighbourhood in 2016. Famous by then for his distinctive design of lavish residences, Rafauli proved to be the perfect choice to mastermind the 50,000-square-foot mansion. Dubbed “The Embassy,” the 100-million-dollar home, completed last year, features a full-sized NBA basketball court, world-class music studios, indoor and outdoor pools and Hammam spas complete with tanning beds and a massage centre — just what the pop star ordered and what Rafauli helped deliver. “There’s nothing too extreme, there’s nothing too grand as a wish,” states

the proud designer. “Each project is its own jewel stone and has its own DNA of the client involved. These spaces would be relevant a hundred years ago and they’re more relevant a hundred years later.” A hallmark of Rafauli’s work is his obsession with fashion, and he cites visionary designers like Gianni Versace, Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford among his influences. Beyond Rafauli’s own impeccably suave and polished sense of personal style, he’s adamant about weaving fashion statements into all his architectural and furniture designs. “There’s an automatic attraction to fashion for me. I understand what it takes in terms of artistic vision, and then to see that through, seamlessly, to a completed product,” Rafauli reflects. But his penchant for fashion is more than mere fashion for fashion’s sake. “What I wear is an expression of who I am, and a reflection of what makes me who

I am. So when I think of fashion, I certainly think of my work, because I use an average of 5,000 different textiles in any given project that I involve myself in. My personal home has almost 6,200 textiles. That’s a lot of materiality, a lot of detail and a lot of coordination of colours and tones and the right material choices.” Since art is such an integral part of Rafauli’s sensibility, he was elated to design a bespoke grand piano for Drake, partnering with the world’s largest piano maker, Bosendorfer, out of Vienna, and teaming up with the great Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The collaboration resulted in three masterpiece pianos, with the first one going to Drake. “So now, you not only have the most valuable piano in the world, but it is now an art piece as well as a musical instrument within a spectacular space where people congregate. It oozes Drake’s personality and my personality, and it reflects luxury, quality and all the things that we’re It’s of paramount importance for Rafauli to have a close relationship with his clients, and a real feel for who they are so that he can imbue his creations with their spirit. “I like to get to know my prospective clients in terms of their personalities and how they live and function — whether it’s a carte blanche situation or whether they’re heavily involved — because Ferris Rafauli x Takashi Murakami collaboration of Bosendorfer Piano. or may not realize until they’re living in the space. It’s important for me to really get to know who I’m working with on a personal level.” In the case of Drake, Rafauli claims it was a magical marriage: Both men are of the same generation, both Canadian-born and both highly successful artists in their respective fields. The end result, in the eyes of Rafauli, Drake and anyone else who’s had the privilege to experience the space, is magnificent. And while all of his diverse projects have the stamp of super-high quality when it comes to design, architecture, discipline, formality and a kind of seamless style, what’s really outstanding about these various spaces, according to Rafauli, is that they all have a different soul. “The DNA of the client always has to appear right, in terms of what they love or want to express, whether it’s colour, fashion, cars, sports — any of these things that people enjoy become features that I then highlight throughout the artistic design. And that’s what makes it super special.” Some might say that, because of the pandemic, we’re living in times that are more in line with minimalisim than maximalism. However, the bold, elegant opulence in Rafauli’s masterpieces speaks of another perspective. I suggest to him that it might be a form of fantasy escapism. “I see it very much as a fantasy,” he concurs. “These are environments that we create that have artistic infusion, that are detailed and bespoke and tailored to specific clientele who are looking for ‘special’ — not average, not regular, but an expression of who that client is.” Every layer, every textile, every element that Rafauli designs and employs all make for a result that is seamless. He designs the architecture, the interiors and the collection of furniture that he draws on. “Even the landscaping is all of ours, so it’s truly bespoke living and designing at the highest level internationally. And that’s the way I see it — a real fantasy.” Interestingly, Rafauli feels like he’s been preparing for the pandemic his whole life, because everything that he incorporates into his home projects has always been about making the “at home” experience easier, richer, more luxurious and more inspiring. “It’s all about staying at home and having people come to you for parties and having events at your house and housing all the things that make you who you are, whether you’re into sports or

109

you can have many different environments within one dwelling,” he says. And he’s in more demand than ever, as people with means are realizing just how important the home is, as opposed to travelling to different destinations. Rafauli says the focus on these customized homes is a kind of new wave right now. When it comes to fantasy features that are dear to Rafauli’s heart, it’s the heady, artful, international collaborations he’s worked on that he seems most proud of, citing that he just wants to align himself with stuff that has substance and longevity. Examples are two other stellar creations that stand out: An ArtDeco-inspired “Chateau Supreme” stove he designed with the 150-year-old French company La Cornue, and the “Grand Vividus” bed he designed with 169-year-old Swedish company, Hästens. There’s already a long waiting list for both of these products, including the Grand Vividus bed that sells for $400,000 USD. The bed weighs over a ton, and Rafauli considers it an art piece. “It’s the Birkin Bag of beds. It’s the super exclusive for the super exclusive for the finest sleep in the world, with art in mind.” Like all great designers, it’s a perfect balance of form and function that Rafauli aspires to. And his fantastic, detail-driven dreams are realized because of his fearlessness and tenacity. While he also welcomes change, he’s excited by the permanent nature of architectural wonders, as opposed to the fleeting nature of mere fashion. “There’s something fascinating and magical about drawing something on paper and then

seeing it born and realized in bricks and mortar, and then knowing that long after you’re gone, people can appreciate something you dreamed up so many years ago,” reflects Rafauli. He also finds inspiration in knowing that what he produces becomes such an important part of people’s lives. “One of the biggest attractions to architectural design for me was to create environments that people actually get to live in. It’s flattering for me, because someone is trusting you to not only invest time, money and efforts to design and build their dream, but when it’s completed, they live in it with their family, and they grow their families, and they have good days and great memories that are made over the years. These people are choosing to carve out their time in life to live in an environment that I created.” It’s a fact that most architects get better with age. But there’s also a fearlessness that has to be present in order to push new boundaries. “For me, fearlessness is a big part of great design,” says Rafauli. I ask him if that’s something that could dissipate with age. “I think with age, you get comfort, and you might potentially take less risks, because as you get further along in your career and your age, it takes a lot out of you to keep pushing boundaries.” Rafauli admits that he may already wear people down at the factories he works with because the details he demands are often so complicated. “We’re constantly pushing,” he admits. “I wonder how much more of that one does as one gets further along.” However, barely out of his fourth decade, Rafauli isn’t slowing down anytime soon. His star continues to rise; he’s in huge demand around the world. Still, he’s pretty hard on himself, and says he’s his biggest critic. “It’s my personality type that every detail matters, so I look at things with such a sharp eye that 99 percent of the population wouldn’t even notice. It’s hard to live that way. It’s just how you’re disciplined, and as you keep progressing and the projects become more and more intense, the details get more and more immense, whether it’s a minimalist structure or a maximalist approach. So I am my worst critic. It’s great for the end result, but it’s definitely a hard way to live.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDON BARRÉ

As much blood, sweat, tears and imagination go into the luxurious lifestyle temples that Ferris Rafauli dreams up and creates, nothings compares with the satisfaction he gets in wowing and empowering his clients. “I’ve had people tell me that when they live in these homes, they feel like they just do better in life and have more success in business because they’re motivated,” he says with pride. “When you wake up in the morning, you have a Library den designed by Ferris Rafauli for private residence, complete with his furniture line.

sense of reward, and when you leave the house you’re motivated to go out and do more. It’s a really cool feeling. I think it’s special and it’s part of the beauty of creating these jewel stones.”

When one client who was fond of an almost-completely blue room Naranjo created asked her to design something just as impactful in his heritage home, Naranjo was confident she’d deliver. “He wanted bold and

Yellow isn’t a shade that speaks to Naranjo often, but she was up to the challenge of designing a space around the sunny hue. “I love yellow, but it’s intimidating. Not everyone can wear it or pull it off. It’s one of the more difficult colours to design with,” she says. The bold yellow space started out as a room that left much to be desired. The long living room was done in pink, which wasn’t an out-of-the-ordinary choice for the 1980s. The sofa was covered in florals, there were no mouldings, the fireplace was dated and

STYLE MODERNE Simple, clean, streamlined, ornamental and geometric, this exquisite house was remodelled with an Art Deco panache in mind and it delivers on all counts. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Red Curtain Entertainment Photography featured on pg 40 by AB Studio Inc

opted for a piece that was inspired by Edgar Brandt, an artist who was dubbed the “master of Art Deco ironwork.” The metal door was created the same way jewellery is made. “There’s casting, bending, forging, grinding, sanding and polishing. It takes thousands of hours and is made by truly skilled craftsmen,” Saavedra says. The clients toured Art Boulle’s Vaughan, Ont.-based showroom and took a liking to the highgloss finishes and the intricate details in the metal and woodwork. When the clients saw the possibilities of the various high-end work that can be designed and produced, they placed their trust in Art Boulle and Saavedra to be the interior designer for their 6,000-square-foot abode in Mississauga, Ont. “When we met, we worked together very well and gained each other’s trust — we created a very special relationship. It took several meetings to truly understand what the clients envisioned for their dream home. Their vision encompassed a palace-like design, not the palace we would imagine but a palace of this era. With this in mind, our inspiration came from the Art Deco movement,” Saavedra says. Integrated in the design are beautiful white lacquered panels with dark macassar ebony wood and gold trims. The elegant Carrara Lincoln marble floors with dark emperador features and brass inlays bring together the grandeur of the interior. “We wanted the entrance to feel majestic, so we incorporated solid-wood columns with gilded details, oversized bronze mirrors and scalloped panels in the two-storey hallway,” she says.

here’s a quiet little pocket in Maple, Ont., near the corners of Bathurst Street and Teston Road, that’s synonymous with luxury — just ask the residents in nearby neighbourhoods who frequently

stroll through Woodland Acres when a lavish setting is desired. The sprawling lawns, vast and opulent homes, mature trees and charming courts off the main street, Woodland Acres Crescent, are something you’d typically find in more rural settings of the province. “That’s what makes this community — and this spectacular house — so special. Situated just seven minutes from Highway 407, when you’re in Woodland Acres, it feels like you’re farther away from such fabulous amenities, but you’re not,” says Voula Argyropoulos, the realtor from Hammond International Properties who sold this remarkable abode. “You’d have to go much farther out to find something this incredible. There’s so much appeal here.”

The family not only appreciated the space that the traditionally designed 8,600-square-foot home (it’s 12,000 square feet if you factor in the basement) would afford them, they also valued the home’s functionality and quality. The custom build is full of exceptional details that the new homeowners didn’t overlook. “Everything from the windows, trim work and solid-wood doors to built-ins, bookshelves and walnut flooring is done beautifully, and the architectural details and layout of the house is perfect for a large family and for entertaining,” she says. “The homeowners were particularly impressed with the flow of the home, as well as the second

It’s true this appeal is what drew the new homeowner when this house went up for sale, but it was also the fact that this is a true family home. One of the highest-set houses in the area (you can see Toronto’s skyline from atop the 1.8-acre property), the home was built in 2008, and it was designed to shelter three generations — a set of grandparents, parents and their children. “There are two principal bedrooms situated at either end of a long hallway, each with ensuites, sitting areas and balconies,” says Argyropoulos. “When the buyer saw the property, they loved that it could accommodate their multigenerational family. In their culture, it’s customary for adults to live with their parents.”

floor. The bedrooms are generously separate — it’s like each principal bedroom is in a wing of its own.” If the new owners were taken with the interior of the home, the exterior was the added bonus. The original occupant had a vision — he focused heavily on the grounds and treated the landscaping and special additions as if the property was a resort. “There’s a tennis court and pool, which isn’t out of the ordinary, but there’s also a putting green, brilliant gardens, a fire pit and camping area, where the kids would pitch tents and sleep outside on nice nights. In the winter, it served as a toboggan hill,” says Argyropoulos. The landscape designer also built retaining walls with river stone that surrounds the property. “It’s built like Fort Knox. Twenty-foot retaining walls surround the property in its entirety,”

It was a thrilling build for Marin Zabzuni. When the architectural designer, who’s also the founder and owner of Toronto-based design firm Contempo Studio, first met the homeowner of this impressive 3,600-square-foot abode in the Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue area of Toronto, he immediately saw the potential in the 30-footwide lot. The homeowner found Zabzuni online and when they met, it was clear they’d be able to work together seamlessly. “I could tell that he had design savvy, and he had some great ideas right off the bat,” Zabzuni says. So, together with Tailor Build, a local boutique custom home builder, Zabzuni designed and built this lavish two-storey, four-bedroom ABOVE: The kitchen is super streamlined, and the blackand-white contrast works perfectly in the space. home for the young couple with kids. “They wanted a modern house, but not something too modern. They wanted something timeless that would grow with their family,” he says. “They also asked for an open-concept space with contrasting colours, a functional layout and a minimalistic look. It was all about clean, fresh design.” This is where DS Interiors came into play and helped realize the look for the end product. The inspiration for the build was to create something understated yet luxe — it was important to keep the design uncluttered. The kitchen is the perfect case in point. The designer opted for a streamlined look for the cabinets — there

were no handles, just touch latches. “It’s very minimal. We did a white kitchen and brought in black for a monochromatic look. There are also built-ins — like the coffee compartment and the fridge and freezer — that don’t stick out, keeping that modern, organized feel,” he says. The contrast comes in with the matte porcelain island and the black stone quartz backsplash and countertop. “That’s kind of the theme of the main floor — everything looks clean and streamlined. The white oak floors are a great example. They’re not stained, just varnished, so they look very natural in the house.” The staircase also has a modern feel. “We decided on a closed-riser staircase and chose to add glass to give a sense of openness to the main floor. Then, behind the stairs, we did a feature wall that extends from the second floor down to the basement — it really adds texture to the space,” the builder says. There’s another feature wall, this one is in the front entrance. To make the wall beside the front door, the team used pieces of flooring and affixed them to the wall on an angle. With a bench and cabinet at the entrance, the wall adds visual interest. The fireplace accomplishes the same thing in the living room. It’s streamlined and has an interesting design feature: The outlet where the heat comes out was recessed and incorporated as part of the design. It’s the opening at the top of the wall and blends in flawlessly with the

style of the room. Upstairs you’ll find a blue bedroom for the homeowners’ son (it’s quite adorable and features Star Wars wall art) and a light pink room for their daughter. The kids share a blue bathroom with stunning gold accents. The master bedroom follows the look of the rest of the house and is clean and uncluttered. The ensuite brings in that black-and-white contrast — the vanity and shower are surrounded by concretecoloured tile at the floors and on the walls. “The tile looks like concrete and really allows the vanity and the incredible curb-less shower to be the main focus in the room,” he says. It goes without saying that the homeowners embraced their new space — they were happy with the fresh design details and the layout’s spacious feel. “They both love it and it was so great to work with the couple. In fact, we still keep in touch,” he says.

A Work of Art Peter Triantos was born an artist. Here, this master of his craft shares his unique, colourful story — from being a student and time spent as a carpenter, to how Toronto and his travels have affected what he puts on his canvases. By Martha Beach

eter Triantos has always been creative. “Grade three is when the bug first hit me,” he recalls. His teacher handed out big sheets of paper during class, and he was immediately hooked. “I was influenced by a couple young artists, who were luckily sitting on either side of me,” he jokes. But all kidding aside, he describes the experience as “vivid.” It jump-started his pure adoration of creating art for joy’s sake. Throughout elementary, middle and into high school, Triantos continued to explore his artistry. “No one could stop me. I didn’t pay attention in school, in class. I was always doodling.” Despite the passionate start, Triantos didn’t pursue art full-time until much later in life. Traditional schooling didn’t capture his mind, so Triantos left high school early. He began carpentry at age 25 and launched a successful career as a carpenter and homebuilder. “It has helped me in my art tremendously,” he says. “But I never got to enjoy it.” The world of constructing and finishing multi-million-dollar homes is fast-paced. “I never got to enjoy the homes I was building. It was on to the next, then the next, and so on,” he says. “It’s definitely not the same as what I do now.” Throughout his woodworking career, Triantos knew that he always had that special artist card in his ABOVE: Weeping Woman, 2020, acrylic on canvas, 60” x 48.”

mixed with culture and colour.” Triantos has travelled the world with his art — France, Miami, Switzerland, Korea, New York, Napa Valley, Auckland and more — but he had never thought of relocating his studio. That is, until COVID-19 hit. “I love the coffee shops, the people. But now Toronto has lost that sense of flavour. The dynamic of the city has changed.” A year into shutdowns, the thought has finally crossed his mind: Maybe it’s time to set sail, possibly get a studio in Europe, and just try and find some happiness painting on a beach. “I love the city, but it’s more important to be painting and be happy,” he confesses. “I think it’s better to tools. reating a modern home for a family that tends to prefer more traditional design is a challenge, but for Rosalia Fazzari, president and lead designer at Vaughan, Ont.based Tapestry Decor, it was a pleasure.

Fazzari was hired by the homeowners — a couple with four

older kids — to completely remodel and redesign their 23-year-old, 4,000-square-foot home in Nobleton. They had outgrown the way they use their home and were ready for a refresh. “There were certain things they wanted from their home that they just weren’t getting anymore.

The homeowners asked Fazzari to add more space to their existing kitchen — they're a large family and they love to entertain.

For example, their kitchen needed to be expanded, so they asked me to build an extension onto the room. They’re a large family and they’re

South Beach isn’t the only thing that brings the heat. When designer Nadia Di Donato was tasked with designing this stunning penthouse, she took her cue from her sublime surroundings. By Lisa van de Geyn Photography by Bright Lifestyle Media

THE SONGS

about it would

have you believe that Miami is all nightclubs and beaches filled with the young and carefree. But Miami is a locale that boasts so much more, and according to designer Nadia Di Donato — who designed this spectacular condo — Florida’s southern coast is the perfect place to create a soothing space worthy of being called home. The homeowners were looking for a cool, luxe, tranquil space in Miami Beach. “They wanted a place that’s inviting and beautifully designed,” says Di Donato. “Considering this, and that Miami is in the global spotlight each year for its international art, design and architecture, the challenge was to recognize that it would take much more than just a waterfront condo with an ocean view to create the backdrop for an ocean-centric lifestyle in an inviting and iconic residence for design-minded owners.”

145

“I aimed to capture the sunny, optimistic vibe of Miami.”

The penthouse is in the Akoya building, which is known for its luxury and elegance. Located on Collins Avenue — right on the beach — the prestigious building is 47 storeys, making it the tallest condo in Miami Beach. It’s also nestled between the world-class shopping of Bal Harbour and South Beach’s nightlife. The homeowners chose the 3,000-square-foot, tri-level penthouse, which was “crafted to blur the lines between the indoors and out. The design helps the owners feel like they’re perched amidst the clouds and at home with the ocean below,” says Di Donato. “Styling the penthouse, furnishings and artwork, I aimed to capture the sunny and optimistic vibe of Miami.” The interior exudes vibrancy and tranquility. It’s clean and modern and combines glamour with modernity. With floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and indoor-outdoor balconies, the homeowners can easily bring the outdoors in. “The inspiration behind the design is to literally feel the comfort of the ocean and the openness of the sky. The airy and sunlit interior is meant to complement the exterior with the spirit of modern-day Miami upheld.” The palette blends stark white finishes with rich hues and natural textures that speak to the area. “Drawing inspiration from Miami’s glamorous mid-century past, and urban, hip vibe the design is jewel-like; it’s a timeless interior that is as sophisti-

cated as it is comfortable. This modern-chic residence is designed to be warm and welcoming,” says Di Donato. For accent colours against the white palette, Di Donato used colours inspired by the sun, sand, ocean and sky. “Rich materials and mid-century modern furnishings further add to the warmth and comfort of the luxury condo unit, infusing it with an enduring appeal. It really takes its warm, welcoming cues from Miami lifestyle. I meticulously selected finishes, furniture and artwork. These details are accentuated by touches of white quartz and mosaic tile. Floor-to-ceiling windows and a uniquely sleek sophistication offer an unparalleled living experience.” The condo also boasts an incredible collection of artists, including a commissioned Romero Britto’s skull-motif painting and a Mr. Brainwash striped zebra sculpture. Plus, it has elements that incorporate hospitality design philosophy to condo living, thanks to Di Donato’s impressive resume — she has styled several residential and commercial properties in Miami, including Cibo Wine Bar, Coral Gables Country Club and Athletic Club, the lobby and residences of Oceania III and Floyd Mayweather’s home. The condo has stateof-the-art sound and lighting systems, smart home, commercial-grade wine storage and hotel-grade fixtures. And since the homeowners love nothing more than relaxing and indulging in the serene surrounding, there’s a panoramic ocean view from every room. “There’s also 2,000 square feet of outdoor space and rooftop private pool deck. The design for the infinity-edge lap pool and underwater banquette seating is sublime. This is truly a one-of-a-kind trophy condo.”

Luxe to You

STATE OF THE ART

Artist Max Jamali told us about how luxury plays into his art, his inspirations and how he lives his best life.

What does living luxuriously mean to you? I feel like the word “luxury” and pursuing luxury are very unique to each individual. Some see it in physical achievements, and some see it in spiritual ones. I think the ultimate definition of “luxury” is achievements that allow each person to enjoy their life to the fullest. For me, living luxuriously means waking up and trusting that whatever defines the luxurious fulfilment for me is possible, and that every day I am taking one step closer toward it. How does luxury and extravagance factor into your work? I spent my teenage years in Dubai, and I was always fascinated by the design and architecture — that city is visually super luxurious and
