Summertime, Family, Gratitude And Giving Back
As we embrace the summer, spend time with our loved ones and relish the beautiful sunny weather, we also take this moment to reflect on the past year and prepare for the future. Reflecting on the whirlwind that was my life a few months ago, I feel an immense sense of gratitude. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who was a part of the Living Luxe Design Show 2024 and I offer a big congratulations to Wise Nadel Design for winning the Outstanding Booth Design award and gracing the cover of this issue. As you can see on the cover, the creation of Wise Nadel Design’s booth was a monumental effort, showcasing precision and teamwork. It was a remarkable highlight of our show, one that I reflect upon with pride. The passion that exhibitors demonstrated in creating their stunning booths did not go unnoticed. To all the runners-up and every exhibitor, we deeply appreciate your hard work, dedication, and skill. Without you, the success of our show would not have been possible.
Looking ahead, I am thrilled to announce the official dates for the Living Luxe Design Show 2025, set for April 24 to 27. We are also excited to reveal that JennAir will be our presenting sponsor in 2025. JennAir has been an amazing supporter of us, and we look forward to the exciting projects and announcements we will share together. Next year promises to be even more extraordinary as we prepare for a significant expansion for both ourselves and our exhibitors. We can’t wait for you to see what we have in store.
This summer has also been a precious time for me to connect with my family. My children and I travelled to Quebec to visit my relatives. Having grown up in Montreal, I cherish these trips back home as an annual tradition. Sharing the places of my youth with my children allows them to learn more about my past, and I get to discover even more about them during our time together, especially during those long car rides.
In addition to these family moments, this summer has been a significant time for giving back and supporting our community. Recently, we presented a cheque to the SickKids Foundation from City Couture, which raised an impressive $124,612.41. This achievement was possible thanks to the incredible efforts of my amazing committee and co-chair, Marialisa De Gasperis. Moreover, we proudly supported SickKids as a media sponsor for the Scrubs in the City event, another impressive charity initiative.
We also attended and supported the Marner Assist Foundation this year, a fantastic charity founded by Mitch Marner that provides resources and support to ensure a sustainable future for children. Additionally, we are thrilled to be a media partner for the Women Empowerment Awards in September. As a woman entrepreneur, I find it empowering to support events that create spaces and networks for women to thrive. I am fortunate to have a remarkable group of strong, powerful women around me, without whom I would not be where I am today.

Celebrating And Showcasing Our Remarkable Canadian Talent
Well, it seems another year has already passed since my last letter. Congratulations to Wise Nadel Design and all of their collaborators for winning this issue’s cover with their stunning booth design.
The year has been full of excitement with our annual Living Luxe Design Show. I have to say that it was beautiful and action-packed. Thank you to all the vendors and sponsors who helped to make this event such a wonderful success. Often, we Canadians are overlooked on the world stage of design, fashion and overall talent. But we know that there is so much talent here, and that is why the Awards Show, alongside the Design Show, showcased the Canadian spirit. It may be early to look ahead to next year’s show; however, it is exciting to hear that all the participants and sponsors are already planning for the 2025 events.
Since this is our Design Issue, I am sharing a beautiful painting that my niece created for me of a phoenix. I am calling it “Rise.” Until next time!

THE GOLD STANDARD
An ancient mathematical formula that defines symmetry applies to our perception of facial beauty.
We know it when we see it: a perfectly proportioned face that epitomizes beauty. That proportion is called the golden ratio, a mathematical formula that accounts for facial attractiveness. Dr. Philip Solomon, MD, FRCSC, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeon, practising Facial Plastic Surgery in Toronto, explains the golden ratio, why we find it attractive, and how it can be emulated.
By Dr. Philip Solomon & Nancie Heiber
Living Luxe: Dr. Solomon, what is the golden ratio as it applies to human faces? How is it measured?
Dr. Philip Solomon: The golden ratio originated in ancient times when Greek mathematicians discovered the most aesthetically pleasing composition of shapes. We apply it to the human face by using the ratio 1:1.618. Ideally proportioned facial features, according to this ratio, are often considered beautiful. For example, if you take the length of the face and divide it by the width of the
face, the ideal number should equal 1.6. This means a beautiful person’s face is about one and a half times longer than it is wide.
We also look at dividing the face into thirds—from the hairline to the eyes, from the eyes to the base of the nose, and from the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin. If the measurements are equal, the face is considered more beautiful. This doesn’t mean people should start measuring their faces to determine their beauty. I would say this is a mathematical guideline that may be helpful in my line of work when it comes to surgical planning and non-surgical aesthetic procedures.
Dr. Philip Solomon MD, FRCSC
Living Luxe: Which celebrities are closest to displaying the golden ratio?
Dr. Philip Solomon: There are many beautiful celebrities who score high on the scale of the golden ratio. But there are also many whose facial balance may not fall under the golden ratio. What’s also interesting is when you strictly apply the golden ratio (with the aid of computer technology) to some celebrity faces, they actually appear less attractive. An example would be Margot Robbie or Leonardo DiCaprio. Celebrities who do score high include Bella Hadid, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Henry Cavill and Kim Kardashian; all have mathematically balanced facial features that can be considered beautiful.
Living Luxe: Can plastic surgery create the desirable balance of the golden ratio in a patient’s face? If so, how?
Dr. Philip Solomon: There are a few facial cosmetic procedures that can improve facial balance. They include rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, chin reduction, hairline lowering and brow lifts. We can’t change the position of the eyes, obviously. However, we can modify the height of the forehead, the position of the eyebrows, the projection of the nose and chin. These modifications can profoundly improve facial balance. Rhinoplasty is the most common facial cosmetic procedure that can achieve transformative results in improving facial balance. Even if it’s a matter of millimetres, substantial changes can occur. Men and women ranging in age from their teens to their 70s often look to modify the shape of their noses to improve their facial balance. In some cases, we combine rhinoplasty with a chin augmentation to better balance the profile. A recessed chin combined with an overly projected nose can throw off the harmony of the face. With regard to the horizontal thirds of the face, we are able to address a high forehead with a procedure called hairline lowering, which has become quite popular among my female patients. A high forehead can throw off the balance of the face if it measures more than one third the length of the face. It can also appear more masculine. Hairline lowering can reshape the forehead and reduce the height by one to two inches.
Living Luxe: How does the golden ratio measurement apply to surgery?
Dr. Philip Solomon: In facial cosmetic surgery, we refer to mathematics, but it’s often more about artistry. Due to the fact that most patients’ anatomy does not strictly adhere to the golden ratio, artistry needs to be applied to best balance their facial features. In chin-implant surgery, the ideal projection of the chin should be two millimetres less than the projection of the vermilion border of the bottom lip. These are guidelines for ideal positioning. However, cosmetic surgery is also an art form and we have some latitude to use our artistic sensibility as well.
Living Luxe: Can beauty be found outside of the golden ratio?
Dr. Philip Solomon: Of course. We often see people who have beautiful eyes, full lips, a refined nose, or voluminous hair, but they may not meet the golden ratio. It’s not always about mathematics, but about the sum of the parts: how the eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, and jaw look relative to each other. It’s also about confidence, intelligence, physical appearance, elegance and creative expression that can often offer more than just the golden ratio.
Living Luxe: In addition to aiming for proportionality, what other treatments do you recommend for patients who strive for more symmetry in their faces?
Dr. Solomon: When trying to improve symmetry, surgery may be the most applicable course of treatment, depending on the concerns. We can address asymmetry with such procedures as blepharoplasty, brow lifts, neck liposuction, chin augmentation or reduction, fat grafting, hairline lowering, cheek implants and facelift surgery. We may also be able to use such non-surgical tools as injectables, neuromodulators and dermal fillers. Patients in mid-life do lose facial volume and develop skin laxity as part of the aging process, which can create asymmetry. For example, eyelids can become asymmetrical with one eyelid drooping more than another. The same can occur with brow positioning as they may not remain symmetrical with age. Neuromodulators can exacerbate this over time as well. A combination of procedures can often work synergistically to address these concerns, such as a blepharoplasty with a brow lift and facelift surgery combined with facial fat grafting. We are provided the canvas to work with and our goal always is to optimize facial balance and enhance natural beauty.

DESIGNING FROM THE OUTSIDE IN
Tridel fashions a complete environment for luxury condo buyers.
By Phillipa Rispin
Discerning homeowners usually have strong preferences in design and decor. Having a home laid out and decorated to their satisfaction can be an intense process involving weeks, if not months, of discussion, discovery, and decision-making with design professionals. How, then, does a developer offer a multi-storey residential building that will appeal to the tastes of varied relocating homeowners seeking luxury and style?
For Tridel, with its condo community The Well, the planning on its
Signature Series started early. “We want to provide a unique experience,” says Samson Fung, Tridel’s vice president, sales and marketing. “We aimed for a non-traditional condo development that satisfies the demands of what we see as an underserved market: people who are smart-sizing from traditional homes with gardens and spacious interiors, or those who are ready to move up to a more luxurious lifestyle.”
Fung explains that the company’s clientele who are moving from, say, large homes surrounded by greenery are not interested in completely losing outdoor space. Those who are stepping up from traditional condos are seeking more generously sized accommodations than many contemporary developments provide.
Tridel’s solution is a building with a stepped-back front facade that overlooks Wellington Street. All suites have outdoor space and generous
fenestration. Terraced suites start on the seventh floor, offering even more ample opportunity for alfresco living. There are also, of course, the expected high-end amenities, such as an outdoor pool, a party room, and a fitness room. The first three floors of the building are given to retail space that makes for easy living, including a food hall, three coffee shops, and six restaurants along the Wellington side.
In the suites, the same sense of spaciousness prevails. Individual units range from 1,600 to 2,500 square feet. Fung makes judicious use of the term “great room” to describe the generous proportions of the open-concept living-dining-kitchen areas. “Our suites are ideal for people who like to entertain or want adequate space to feature art,” he notes. The sense of space continues in more private areas of the suites—for instance, laundry rooms feature stacked full-size machines and shelves for folding.
The Well’s Signature Series model suites showcase the various types of lifestyles possible. “We have a team of three fully accredited interior designers and one more person working towards accreditation,” Fung says. “Our designers keep up with the trends.” Just as important, they understand the possibilities of gracious living within the individual suites’ layouts. They are adept at showing how a room can serve various functions, whether as a den, an office, a media room, or a guest room, for example. It all helps prospective owners to understand the possibilities of life in this new building that Fung proudly calls “our crowning achievement.”
AT SEA IN SUMPTUOUS STYLE
A Mediterranean cruise on Silver Ray’s inaugural voyage featured the best of everything: accommodation, dining and superb pampering.
By Valerie Simmons
I was recently a guest on the inaugural voyage of the spectacular Silver Ray, the newest of Silversea’s popular Nova class of ships. Even before we boarded for our voyage between Lisbon, Portugal and Cádiz, Spain, the Silver Ray stood out as the thoroughbred of the port. With more than 13,000 square feet of glass incorporated into her asymmetric design, the Silver Ray is both dramatic and elegant.
Once aboard, I began to understand the thinking behind the innovative design. Public spaces with soaring high ceilings are flooded with light. Even the swimming pool—an absolute stunner that would not look out of place in the garden of a fine hotel—is located on the side of the deck so as not to interrupt the sea views.
In addition to its sleek beauty, the Silver Ray has been designed with cutting edge technology that makes it one of the most sustainable ships
of its class sailing today. It is 40 per cent more fuel-efficient than current international standards, due in part to a hull built to minimize resistance in the water and a hybrid fuel system that will eventually incorporate hydrogen fuel cells.
The Silver Ray can accommodate up to 728 passengers in spacious suites with large balconies that are located on decks six to nine. The many bars, restaurants and entertainment venues are found on decks three, four and five. Six glass elevators also rise to deck 10, which houses the S.A.L.T. Lab (Sea and Land Tastes), the lively pool bar, and the popular Marquee terrace for casual dining. Towards the aft of the Silver Ray is the Dusk Bar, the perfect spot for an evening drink as ports of call fade into the distance.
For me, however, the true luxury on board the Silver Ray came down to three elements: personalized service, extraordinary dining choices, and the best spa experience I’ve had on a ship. Founded in 1994 as an ultra-luxury global cruise line, Silversea is acclaimed for its all-inclusive lifestyle offerings and its global destination portfolio. All Silversea ships have butlers, and ours was a genius at anticipating our every need. Caviar and champagne on ice before we go for our evening meal? Done. Breakfast served on the balcony? No problem. Laundry disappears and
magically shows up in your walk-in closet, beautifully pressed. When you prepare to disembark, your clothes will be wrapped in tissue and packed in the manner of the organized traveler that you imagine you could be, if only you had a butler at home.
Silversea, being of Italian origin, has always focused on local ingredients and has paid attention to culinary culture that matters to modern palates. The company first introduced the S.A.L.T. program on the Muse class of ships, but the concept has been expanded and improved on the Silver Ray and her sister ship, the Silver Nova. One of the most recent innovations is a large, interactive kitchen for cooking and mixology classes. In the evening, it can accommodate 18 guests for tasting menus, prepared on-site by a knowledgeable chef. There are numerous other dining options that vary from the casual Hot Rocks Grill to the more formal French La Dame, so you will never be bored. I loved the evening ritual of dressing for dinner. While not essential, it is an on-board tradition for guests to make an occasion of every meal and it is fun to watch passengers arrive in grand style as they enter the dining rooms.
The Roman-themed Otium spa is an oasis of calm and pampering at sea. Boasting the largest suites on the ship, the 1,324-square-foot Otium spa suites have wrap-around balconies and private hot tubs. Within the walls of the spa, guests are pampered with bespoke treatments of international standard.
As we neared the end of our cruise, something wonderful happened.
We had set sail from our final port, finished a marvelous meal, and were on the deck for a final nightcap when a band began to play. Suddenly, dozens of guests spontaneously began to dance. Perhaps it was the gentle sound of the waves against the hull of the ship, the live music, the glow of the Mediterranean moonlight or just the sheer joy of being at sea. In our busy world, it felt as if dancing under the stars was the greatest luxury of all.

GLAMOUR & GENEROSITY IN THE CITY
We all know and love SickKids (the Hospital for Sick Children) and its amazing impact. It is among Canada’s most research-intensive hospitals, and is our country’s largest centre dedicated to improving children’s health. SickKids has been innovating and supporting our youngest warriors for more than 149 years, giving children and their families the special care they need to keep fighting. SickKids works tirelessly to provide the best care and facilities while constantly innovating and advancing scientific research to ensure a brighter tomorrow for our children.
The City Couture Gala is committed to assisting the SickKids Foundation in its work to provide specialized care, state-of-the-art facilities, and support to children and their families during some of the most challenging times of their lives. This gala is a wonderful event that showcases the generosity and style of Toronto’s philanthropic community. This year’s Glamour in Eden-themed gala was a wonderful celebration that highlighted the compassion and kindness of our community. City Couture is about coming together— not only philanthropically, but also through a merging of fashion and art for a worthy cause. Featuring a glamourous portrait lounge experience, lively entertainment, both a live and a silent auction, moving speeches by both Jennifer Bernard, the president of SickKids Foundation, and Emily Strike, a former patient

of the hospital, and ending with an exclusive fashion show featuring local Canadian designers, this was a night to be remembered.
For the second year, I had the honour of planning the City Couture Gala, held on April 18. As a committee member, I feel deeply connected to the impact the City Couture Gala has made and will continue to make in

the lives of children and their families. The gala holds a special place in my heart because I have a personal connection to the hospital and can speak directly to the impact it had on my family. My journey with the foundation began after my son suffered second-degree burns on his arm, which required treatment at SickKids. Despite the initial prognosis that he might lose mobility in his arm, the dedicated team at SickKids ensured his full recovery.
This experience has made me deeply admire my son’s fearlessness and resilience, and it is one of the reasons I have been committed to donating to the foundation every month for the past seven years. The strength of children facing such challenging circumstances at a young age is truly remarkable and serves as a powerful source of inspiration. These children, who are battling for their lives, need our unwavering support.
The net proceeds City Couture raised for SickKids will make a direct impact on the lives of these patients. With the generosity of our donors, we raised more than $120,000, which will begin to shatter the limits of what’s possible in children’s health, and will give both patients and their families the special care they need to keep fighting.
Witnessing the generosity of the attendees at the City Couture Gala was truly inspiring. It reminded me of the impact we can make when we come together for such an important cause: we can be the change that these young warriors need to keep fighting.

BESPOKE TILE STYLE
The Deco-Tile team takes craftsmanship and customer service to a new level.
By Adriana Ermter
Synonymous with luxury and quality craftsmanship, Deco-Tile has made its name in the business of floor and wall tiles for nearly three decades. Founded in 1995 by John Di Fonzo, this leading Toronto tile supply company stands out for its exclusive ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass and engineered products, and for its collaborative customer service. Proof is in the company’s longevity.
A lifelong industry expert, John Di Fonzo initially built his knowledge and reputation during the first 11 years of his career as a partner at a tile import and distribution firm. As his talent grew and he captured the trust of designers and customers, his entrepreneurial spirit began to shine and inspired him to open his own business. It led him to establish Deco-Tile; the name was inspired as a creative twist on “Decor Tile.” “I just went for it,” John recalls.
At the helm as the company’s founder and president, John now works alongside his children: Zachary, vice president of sales, and
“WE GO ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR ALL OUR CUSTOMERS, FROM THE BIG-NAME BRANDS TO THE PRIVATE HOMEOWNERS. WE CAN MAKE ANYTHING HAPPEN.”
Victoria, vice president of operations. In this family business, all three share a common vision of excellence, and they delight in taking tile to a new level. “Our tagline is that we find the right products for the project,” says Zachary. “We’re always saying: ‘Send us your inspiration images, your renderings for your projects and let us do the footwork for you.’ ”
That footwork creates outstanding solutions for designers and customers’ home renovations, new builds and commercial projects. With headquarters and a showroom in Toronto and a second location in Oakville, Deco-Tile is a destination for in-stock tiles available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Predominantly sourced from Italy and Spain, the tiles have been hand-selected by the team for quality, colour and resistance to wear and tear. They’re also exclusive to the company. For additional visual inspiration, life-size kitchen and bathroom vignettes by Muti Kitchen & Bath are featured throughout the DecoTile showrooms. “We’re a one-stop shop for designers and retailers,” says Zachary. “We do the work for you, to save you time and effort.”
Artisanally made tiles are also available, designed in collaboration

Steve Bailey is a seasoned real estate professional who has achieved more than $1.5 billion in sales over his almost 20-year career. Steve’s diligence, forthrightness and authenticity have made him an in-demand real estate advisor for clients throughout Waterloo Region and beyond. Though Steve has a broad-reaching knowledge of the local real estate landscape and can serve a range of clients, he is particularly passionate about luxury
with the Deco-Tile team to ensure a blend of artistry and practicality, before being crafted by the company’s manufacturers. “There’s nothing we can’t do,” adds Victoria.
Notable clients—such as Piano Piano restaurant, Eataly Toronto and Balzac’s Coffee Roasters—would agree, having chosen Deco-Tile for multiple projects. So has selfcare sanctuary Othership; the immersive sauna and ice bath spa’s signature golden tile is splashed across the floors and walls of its Toronto and New York City locations.
Recently, Adidas sought a bespoke solution for its flagship store in Toronto. “They asked if I could create a very specific tile in their signature blue colour,” says Victoria. “It’s very niche and not a lot of factories have the ability to replicate colours like this, but I said ‘absolutely!’ We go above and beyond for all our customers, from the big-name brands to the private homeowners. We can make anything happen.”

Decorium offers its clients free interior design.
By Julie Gedeon
Updating and decorating a room can cause us to second-guess ourselves. Should we hire a designer? Choose furnishings ourselves?
Uncertainty about decorating is a thing of the past for anyone tapping into the interior design expertise available without cost to Decorium customers. The three-generation family-owned furnishings store in Toronto has always offered free design services, but will take its complimentary services to an elite level in 2025 with the launch of Decorium Design.
Currently, one of the company’s interior designers can be assigned to assist a customer in everything from selecting the ideal sofa set
to creating an entire home-decorating plan. “We believe that beautifully designed homes should be accessible to everyone,” says Tara Lindsay, Decorium’s vice president of marketing/ buyer. “We’re offering this expertise to help our customers navigate the numerous options to fit their personalities, lifestyles and budgets.”
Decorium Design stems from the realization that decor has evolved. “Decor is more personalized now, but mistakes are costly,” Lindsay explains. “By asking the right questions, our designers balance an individual’s aesthetics with required function to create a space that achieves each homeowner’s style and practical needs.”
Initially opened in July 1986 with a 2,500-square-foot showroom catering exclusively to designers, Decorium ultimately responded to a broader demand for its furnishings. It opened to the public in 1992 and now has a 100,000-square-

foot showroom and warehouse along with extensive online and catalogue offerings.
The designers help customers to determine what suits them best. “It’s about creating a space that’s reflective of the homeowner while also being comfortable, cohesive and consistent in its design elements without ever looking staged,” Lindsay says. The services can range from the selection and placement of furnishings to paint colours and hardware advice, and eventually, as the program expands, offering comprehensive renovation plans with recommendations for various trades.
Everything at Decorium is chosen for design and quality to stand
the test of time rather than being solely on-trend. “Our experienced designers consider how every single piece of furniture or accessory contributes to the home’s overall look and functionality to make the space beautiful, practical and reflective of its homeowners,” Lindsay adds. “It’s all about how the occupants and guests immediately feel at home as soon as they enter that space.”
And it all starts with a phone call. “Once we determine what you’re seeking to do, we’ll recommend next steps,” Lindsay says. “It could be a store visit or appointing one of our designers to meet with you online, in-store and then at your home once you’ve committed to a project.”
CREATED FOR BEAUTY AND SUSTAINABILITY
Engineered flooring is beloved and sought after for being environmentally benign, resilient, and a great design asset in any room.
By Susan Semenak
Ralph Debra has watched with amazement as engineered flooring has gone from underdog to superhero. The president and CEO of Etobicoke-based First Class Flooring used to hear clients and builders refer to solid hardwood floors as the gold standard in flooring options. But not anymore. Engineered wood floors are the new stars, heralded for their elegant looks, versatility, stability and also for their more sustainable environmental footprint.
Debra says engineered wood floors are now the biggest seller for his 38-year-old company, accounting for as much as 80 per cent of sales. “People always thought hardwood was the best, but now top-layer engineered floors are equivalent or preferred,” he says. “With an engineered floor you get the quality, beauty and luxurious feel of walking on an oak floor while knowing that it is more stable and versatile and environmentally friendly than the solid hardwood alternative.”

LEASIDE STANDARD
“WITH AN ENGINEERED FLOOR YOU GET THE QUALITY, BEAUTY AND LUXURIOUS FEEL OF WALKING ON AN OAK FLOOR WHILE KNOWING THAT IT IS MORE STABLE AND VERSATILE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY THAN THE SOLID HARDWOOD ALTERNATIVE.”
The advantages are multiple. Where moisture, humidity or temperature are a concern—as in basements or kitchens—an engineered floor is by far the better option. Made from as many as nine layers of hardwood and plywood fused together with glue, the boards can withstand fluctuations in humidity and temperature much better than hardwood can. And because they are glued rather than nailed during installation, they are also the only option atop the concrete floors in condo buildings. What’s more, they are more environmentally sustainable. Increasingly, homeowners are seeking products that support the environment. Engineered wood uses much less of the tree per plank than solid hardwood, making it a more environmentally sustainable, natural product. “A solid hardwood floor can be sanded only four to six times in its lifetime and then the boards are too thin to hold together. What’s left of the wood underneath
is wasted,” explains Debra. “But an engineered board uses only a top layer of hardwood.”
What’s more, he adds, manufacturers are developing new processes to incorporate wood chips that would otherwise be wasted into the construction of new, stronger plywood that is used in engineered floors, making the product even more environmentally friendly.
One of the biggest drivers of the engineered wood floor’s popularity, Debra says, is the trend toward wider floor boards. “More and more, designers want the look of wider planks,” he says. “Nowadays, no one seems to want those skinny old-fashioned strips that you used to see in old houses.”
And since hardwood flooring cannot be cut to more than a five-inch width without warping or capping, it has lost out in the design war to engineered flooring, whose boards can be cut to as wide as 18 inches without compromising stability.
Among many, one of First Class Flooring’s suppliers of engineered wood is Coswick Flooring, a manufacturer in Belarus known for its fine craftsmanship and quality finishes. Debra likes the way Coswick mills its boards, relying on new technologies that create smaller gaps between boards upon installation. He says Coswick’s boards are longer than the norm and that makes for an elegant appearance. Among the
many styles of engineered wood floors that First Class Flooring sells, what’s the most popular? Debra stops to think. It’s a sleek white oak floor with seven-inch-wide boards. “That, right now, is the height of popularity,” he says.

Mareike Greve: One of the key purchase drivers for dishwashers in the luxury market is quietness. After all, no one wants a noisy, intrusive appliance. JennAir® is the quietest luxury dishwasher brand (based on normal cycle), and our newest 24-inch flushto-cabinet dishwashers operate at just 38 decibels, all without sacrificing on performance.
Living Luxe: Refrigeration is often considered a statement piece in the kitchen. How can someone elevate their kitchen design with refrigeration?
Mareike Greve: Most refrigeration appliances come with the standard stainless-steel exteriors and white interiors, but JennAir® Built-In Refrigerators offer a more luxurious aesthetic, inside and out. For those looking to make a statement in their kitchen, we recently launched the JennAir® Leather Cuts Panels for our column refrigeration products that are available in four distinct designs. But if you prefer a more subtle exterior, most of our built-in refrigerators come with our industry-exclusive Obsidian Black interior finish that offers a more daring and elegant design.
CREATING RESIDENTIAL LUXURY
Title Building Group builds homes of timeless design in Toronto’s top neighbourhoods.
By Stephanie Whittaker
In only four years, Justin Miandro has accomplished something that can take decades to achieve. As the founder and owner of Title Building Group, he has made his mark in Toronto’s luxury home-building industry, winning a coveted award for his achievement. In April, Miandro won the 2024 Mastermind Builder Award at the Living Luxe Design Show.
Although Title Building Group was founded in 2020, Miandro is certainly not new to the field of residential construction. He began his career in home-building in 2014 but wanted a new challenge: to create one-of-a-kind, custom homes. “From conception to

completion, each project is an exhilarating journey that showcases our commitment to delivering outstanding quality,” Miandro says.
The character of Title Building Group is captured in its name, which carries deep symbolic meaning. “Every book has a title, and every home marks a new chapter in a person’s life,” he explains. This philosophy underscores the impact each property has on its residents, linking the concept of “title” to both personal identity and legal property ownership, and emphasizing the significance of the homes that Title builds.
Miandro began his venture into the luxury market by creating a remarkable home for himself in Oakville. “It was a vision of a home that I wanted to live in, which I designed meticulously with the architect,” he says of the sleek contemporary structure.
Because Title Building Group is a boutique firm, Miandro chooses quality over quantity, allowing him to oversee every aspect of each build. He pays scrupulous attention to detail in material selection and design, and in finding the right people for each job, having developed relationships with high-quality tradespeople throughout

the past decade. “Every project has different elements, and for me, it’s very important to have the best tradespeople possible,” he says. The company’s upcoming project on Isabella Avenue in Mississauga exemplifies its renowned craftsmanship.
Professional pride is also evident in the fact that Title Building Group’s projects consistently meet and often surpass local construction standards, ensuring each build is not only aesthetically superior but also functional and enduring.
Miandro works closely with his clients, often finding them an architect. The company can build any architectural style—from ultramodern to French chateau style and everything in between. “We also help our clients to have realistic expectations in terms of obtaining building permits, construction timelines, and budgets,” he says. “And we look at our clients’ desired building lots to ascertain what the topographical challenges might be. Our dedication to the luxury residential sector is fueled by a desire to build homes that are not only durable but also represent meaningful investments for families.”
The company ensures that each construction is unique and perfectly aligns with clients’ visions. Services offered transcend construction to embrace interior and landscape design, as well. “We understand that true luxury is personalized,” Miandro says. “That’s why Title Building
Group prioritizes bespoke service and tailor-made solutions. We do it all, from conception to completion, bringing our clients’ visions to life and creating spectacular residences and moments for generations.”
SURFACE BEAUTY
There is a wide array of tile options, from natural stone to engineered slabs.
You’ve decided it’s time to renovate but you’re overwhelmed by choices. If you’re considering the many selections of stone surfaces, it’s essential to consult an expert to help you make the right choice. Living Luxe asked Tariq Darwish of Cava Surfaces to weigh in on the vast variety of stone his company sells—from granites and marbles to quartzite and onyx. Here’s his expert advice on how to choose wisely.
Living Luxe: Tariq, marble has been a favoured stone since the time of ancient Rome and Greece. How are we using it now?
Cava Surfaces: For centuries, marble and other natural stones have been cherished for their beauty and timelessness. At Cava, we collaborate with designers, builders, and architects, who use our materials throughout the city. Our marbles are used to adorn floors, walls, vanities, furniture, and fireplaces. Today, marble is experiencing a resurgence, with engineered slabs offering replicability while Mother Nature’s stones remain unparalleled.
Living Luxe: How are homeowners using granite now? Has granite’s popularity shifted since the 1980s and ’90s?
Cava Surfaces: Granite has long been the foundation of iconic structures, such as the sculptures carved into Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. In kitchens, its popularity surged in the late 1980s into the early 2000s, due to its exceptional durability. While design trends have evolved with the advent of such engineered materials as quartz and porcelain that mimic marble, granite remains one of our offerings at Cava. We focus on sourcing the most
unique and exotic global varieties. Recently, there’s been a resurgence in North American interest in natural stone for its unparalleled charm.
Living Luxe: What are quartzite and onyx and how are they used? What are the pros and cons of these materials?
Cava Surfaces: Quartzites, primarily mined in Brazil’s Espirito Santo region, are gaining popularity for their exceptional durability, some even surpassing granite. They come in diverse colours, patterns, and textures, resembling marble or featuring unique, otherworldly appearances. Certain quartzites exhibit translucency, making them ideal for striking applications: illuminated bars or stylish powder rooms, for example.
In contrast, onyx, softer than quartzite and akin to marble, varies significantly across quarries. Its blocks come in various shapes, colours, and sizes due to its rarity. Such rare hues as vibrant pinks, greens, oranges, blues, and blacks command premium prices, solidifying onyx as the pinnacle of luxury stones.
Living Luxe: Quartz composite surfaces have also gained mass appeal. Why? What are your recommendations on the use of quartz?
Cava Surfaces: In the past two decades, quartz has dominated the countertop industry, surpassing granite. This engineered alternative gained popularity for its durability, lighter weight, diverse colour options, and marble-like surfaces, all with minimal maintenance. Unlike natural stone samples, quartz samples closely resemble full slabs, simplifying
design choices for designers and consumers. Quartz continues to be a preferred option for countertops and has become a standard choice among builders.
Quartz colours evolve with design trends. At Cava, we’ve introduced the latest generation: Nano-Ink quartz. This technology uses HD printing to authentically mimic marble patterns on quartz slabs.
Living Luxe: Porcelain is not a natural stone, but is widely sought after for its hard texture and ability to resemble marble and granite. How is porcelain used? What are its pros and cons?
Cava Surfaces: In the past 10 years, porcelain has gained ground over quartz for building surfaces. Traditional marble-look quartz has become repetitive because many manufacturers have replicated each other’s designs, saturating the market. This widespread availability has diminished the uniqueness of quartz for those seeking distinctive kitchen aesthetics. Porcelain slabs emerged as pioneers in mimicking marble patterns, offering a near-perfect replica without the upkeep or high cost. Porcelain’s advantages include low porosity, light weight (for easy installation) and resistance to staining. However, porcelain’s fragility during manufacturing can lead to higher labour costs, and repairs are nearly impossible if tiles are chipped or cracked, unlike natural stone which can often be seamlessly repaired, maintaining its original appearance.
LIGHTING THE WAY
Union Lighting & Furnishings casts a bright light with its award-winning showroom
By Julie Gedeon
When you step inside Union Lighting & Furnishings, you enter a showroom designed in an award-winning style. The 100,000-square-foot operation in Toronto’s Castlefield Design District has received the ARTS Award for Best International Lighting Showroom along with other accolades. “It’s always been essential to me to make this showroom the destination for lighting and furnishings,” says Mark Naimer, president and owner of the Toronto location since 1993.
Naimer grew up in the business. “I was sweeping floors at 12,” he recalls. Union traces its origins to long before Naimer’s birth.
Condominiums nestled amongst the most prestigious neighbourhoods, with direct access to the York Mills subway station, and minutes to downtown Toronto and North York, from the mid $600,000s*.
It began as Star Gas & Electric in 1914. The five brothers involved renamed it Union Electric two years later to reflect their united front. The Toronto showroom opened in 1968 at its current 1491 Castlefield location in a newly constructed building. A lot has changed since. “We kept expanding the showroom to display the increasing variety of lighting available,” Naimer explains. “We also realized we could make better use of the floor space by adding furnishings.”
It so happened that Naimer and his wife had been seeking furniture for their new Toronto home around the same time and weren’t finding what they wanted. “I decided to offer the same kind of quality, style and value that we have in our lighting,” he says.
He made a point of learning about good design and construction from his furniture vendors. “Our selections—many of which are made in Canada—offer true value at mid-range prices,” he adds.
The showroom’s vignettes make it easier to visualize how furniture and lighting can dovetail in style, scale and shimmer. “Just the other day, we had clients who loved a living room display and they bought all of it,” Naimer says.
Union caters to homeowners, designers, and custom homebuilders. “We have teams to help each of these clients with their specific projects, whether it’s to plan the latest in lighting systems, or to demonstrate smart-home LED components and motorized window blinds,” he says.
Many clients arrive at the showroom with a photo image or printout of something that caught their eye on the website. “Most
people still want to see and feel things for themselves before they purchase them,” Naimer says. “I wouldn’t dream of buying a sofa without first sitting on it. We will also deliver it straight to the customer with our white-glove service.”
The revamped website, scheduled for later this year, will indicate whether an item is on display or in the building’s warehouse. And the staff is always ready to help. “Our employees, most of whom have worked here for years, undergo continual training so there’s always someone knowledgeable about the latest products and technologies to answer client questions, make recommendations and find solutions,” Naimer says.
ALL ABUZZ ABOUT LUXURY REAL ESTATE
The BUZZ Luxury Secrets event at the Living Luxe Design Show o ered a glimpse into the top-calibre world of very high-end real estate.
Portrait
The BUZZ Luxury Secrets event at the Living Luxe Design Show offered a glimpse into the elite world of high-end real estate. Toronto’s top luxury real estate market players gathered to learn and network during the event, which was curated by Virginia Munden and Isabella Munden, co-founders of BUZZ BUZZ MEDIA INC. and The BUZZ Conference, a company specializing in media and continuous learning for real estate professionals. The event featured dynamic presentations, providing the 300 attendees with valuable insights into the luxury market. “It catered toward a very exclusive clientele: the real estate agents who represent leading luxury brands,” Virginia Munden says. “This specialized segment of the market is quite small. These particular leaders were all selected to speak on the JennAir Stage, as purveyors of luxury.”
Many real estate agents also attended to hear industry updates and forecasts. Toronto REALTOR® Richard Silver of Sotheby’s International Realty Canada presided over the first presentation of the day, which focused on Realm Global, a Manhattan-based professional network for the “most affluent” agents in the luxury real estate market. “Members of Realm Global are able to stay connected to the top agents in the luxury industry,” Munden says. “They also have access to a very high-networth clientele. Richard informed his colleagues in the audience about the opportunity to join this exclusive network.” For consumers, the benefit of Realm Global is the knowledge that REALTORS® affiliated with it can attract high-end buyers, sellers, and investors qualified for the luxury market. “Members of this platform are able to compete and differentiate,” Munden says.
The second discussion, also moderated by Silver, featured a panel of luxury purveyors, including Barry Cohen, Gillian Oxley, and Michael
In addition to real estate agents, many owners of luxury properties attended, looking to learn more about the buying or selling process. “Attendees wanted to know who specializes in their neighborhoods and who’s equipped to do it best,” Munden says. “Whether buying a luxury home in Forest Hill, South-East Oakville, South Mississauga, or Burlington, it’s paramount to connect with the who’s who of luxury real estate to get the results you want.”

Phinney, all prominent Toronto real estate agents in the high-end luxury sphere. “These professionals hold the most extensive portfolio of luxury listings,” Munden said. “They discussed relationships, marketing, photography, videography, powerful networks, and privacy—all crucial elements for clients selling their homes. You can’t fake luxury real estate. Clients with high-level properties expect the very best marketing systems. They emphasize quiet luxury, relying on expertise, powerful websites and detailed, full-colour marketing brochures and digital campaigns.”
The third discussion introduced the audience to Corcoran Horizon Realty. “Corcoran is here in Canada from Manhattan, New York. They’re new players in Canada, but I think they’ll capture a significant market segment,” Munden says. “They’re opening their new location in Yorkville at Avenue Road, a prime area. We are excited to see this evolution. They’re heavily investing in marketing, speaking engagements, and public relations campaigns. They have a branded bus with their logo and tagline, which is drawing curiosity and interest.” Munden added that Corcoran aims to hire top-tier agents in the luxury market. “They were at BUZZ Luxury Secrets to show consumers they are serious contenders for buying or selling luxury real estate.”
Munden emphasized that the Living Luxe Design Show provided a high-calibre experience for attendees. “Being part of this event allowed all attendees to see what’s possible in the luxury real estate space,” she said. “It enabled us to meet people not just in real estate, but from other sectors such as design, architecture, luxury goods, fashion, and food. I’ve never seen an event like this before; it was amazing, and I look
forward to participating in 2025.”
The BUZZ Luxury Secrets event highlighted the intricacies and exclusivity of the luxury real estate market. It brought together industry leaders, high-end property owners, and top real estate agents for a day of learning, networking, and insight into the future of luxury real estate. With presentations from top professionals and the introduction of such new market players as Corcoran Horizon Realty, the event underscored the evolving dynamics and high standards expected in this exclusive market.

The
recently
merged Riverview Heika Build Group is personally invested in Niagara’s future.
By Julie Gedeon
The Riverview Heika Build Group Ltd. has enjoyed a whirlwind start to the year with the recently merged company working alongside preeminent Toronto designer Lori Morris to prepare her fabulous showcase at the Living Luxe Design Show. “It was so exciting to collaborate with Lori and her team over several months to realize her vision for her incredibly impressive display,” says Riverview Heika’s Colin J. Dempster. “It was also fantastic to meet many of the community’s luxury designers and builders and see what they’re doing.”
Dempster and his partner Vince D’Amelio have since refocused their attention on exclusive land acquisition, development and building opportunities in the Niagara-on-the-Lake region where they each have longstanding roots. Dempster moved to the Niagara region in the early 1980s after his father accepted a teaching position there. “I remember
when Inniskillin was the only estate winery, and my first-ever class trip was a visit to its vineyards,” Dempster says. “Even now, when I roll down my car window and smell grapes on the vines, it brings back nostalgic memories.”
D’Amelio is likewise enamoured with Niagara, having built hundreds of houses in the region. He bought a vineyard and planted his initial vines with the advice of his friend Paul Bosc from the Château des Charmes Estate Winery. “Growing a vineyard is a passion of mine, and my wife, Antoinette, is an amateur vintner who has won numerous awards,” he says. “I also love all our fruit trees. After 40 years of developing land for others, it’s nice to be able to come spend time at our vineyard and work on our hobby of wine-making.”
By merging forces earlier this year, D’Amelio and Dempster combine 60 years of land and real-estate development knowhow along with their extensive community network. There’s also a unique synergy between them. “When we first met working on a mutual project, we immediately clicked,” D’Amelio recalls. “We each were doing very well in our own businesses, but now we inspire each other to undertake larger, more ambitious challenges.”
“IT WAS SO EXCITING TO COLLABORATE WITH LORI AND HER TEAM OVER SEVERAL MONTHS TO REALIZE HER VISION FOR HER INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY.”
A current focal point is land development and custom homebuilding in St. David’s, a village in the Niagara region. “We’re excited about this current project involving an upscale modern bungalow design, with beautifully integrated walkouts into the adjacent vineyards,” Dempster says. “This design incorporates luxurious spa amenities, including a stunningly designed indoor pool feature. The property caters to professionals seeking resort-style living and picturesque views all year round.” It’s why Riverview Heika called upon Wise Nadel Design to work on this project. The stellar Toronto interior design firm specializes in high-end statement homes that combine luxury with livability. “It’s such a joy to work with lead designer Robin Nadel because she not only understands what aesthetically works and functions ideally, but also relates this expertly to our clients and our builders,” Dempster says.
The Niagara region naturally attracts wine aficionados so, of course, many prospective clients do usually request a customized wine cellar design within their homes. “Other popular amenities include a full gym and spa,” D’Amelio says. “Elevators are also extremely valued in a custom build, as the convenience of this luxe option adds another layer of design and functionality to a space.”
With all of Niagara currently among the most in-demand and fastest growing regions in Canada, the expertise of the Riverview Heika team is invaluable to prospective land buyers for residential, commercial or tourist-related development. “We’ve not only acquired and identified key properties but often learn about new opportunities from our community network before they are put on the market,” Dempster says. Riverview Heika is, after all, part of Niagara’s terroir.

Spearheaded by Howard Kerbel, CEO of Toronto Jazz Fest, a nonprofit organization, and chaired by Lily Li, the event showcased the best of Toronto’s vibrant music scene. Public relations expert Jessica Panetta managed the event, with the beautiful Joan Kelley Walker as the emcee. Highlights included performances by Molly Johnson, Jim Galloway’s Wee Big Band and Juno-award winner Kellylee Evans, along with an exciting dance-off between swing and hiphop dancers. The night buzzed with music, dancing, fashion, and electrifying energy.

The annual Rosé Picnic opened the summer season with rosé wine, great food, shopping and entertainment.
The Rosé Picnic kicked off the summer season with a sea of pink and white on June 21 and 22 at Hotel X in Toronto. Guests celebrated with rosé wines, cocktails, mocktails and foods prepared by accomplished chefs Mark McEwan, Trevor Lui, Shen Ousmond and Food Dudes. Food trucks were also on the scene.
Barbados brought international flair with chefs Damien Leach, Creig Greenidge and Javon Cummins, who prepared authentic dishes paired with cocktails created by winning mixologists Alexander Chandler and Philip Antoine.
DJ Puffy and DJ Jus Jay King had the crowds dancing with Dr. Jay, DJ Jester, DJ Fizza and DJ Alesandra.
More than 40 vendors showcased products, and the fashion show featured designs by Revelle, Livvy Lizzy Boutique, TIALANI (from Barbados) and Borenta Boutique as models walked the pink carpet in glorious sunshine. The event was made possible through the support of Barbados, Baskin Robbins, La Vie en Rose, Genesis, Constellation Wines and other brands, including media partner Living Luxe. The event’s president and organizer Lori Heller will donate $5 from the sale of every ticket to the Catalyst Fund at Women’s College Hospital Foundation.
Next year’s event is scheduled for June 21 at Hotel X.

Wise Nadel Design, a prominent design firm based in Toronto, garnered attention with an elegant lounge installation at last April's Living Luxe Design Show, ultimately claiming the coveted first place award: Outstanding Booth Design. And the winner is . . . Wise Nadel Design! The occasion: the inaugural Living Luxe Awards Show last April, a glittering gala celebration of the country’s shining stars of interior design, architecture, fashion and real estate. The category: Outstanding Booth Design. “I felt like I was at the Golden Globes!” recalls a triumphant Harvey Wise, half of the design duo behind the star exhibit. “The event itself was so glamorous and well executed, and a lot of fun. Being recognized in front of our peers was the icing on the cake, and we were thrilled.”
Competition was fierce, with more than 50 exhibitors vying for the honour. Wise Nadel Design emerged as both a crowd and judge favourite. “It was such an honour to be selected by the panel of six experts, each a design luminary in their own right,” adds Robin Nadel, Wise’s business partner and co-principal in the prestigious Toronto firm. Wise Nadel Design had a large booth space, a 20-by-30-foot canvas in which to showcase their combined 50-plus years of design and architectural experience. As innovative and creative visionaries, Wise and Nadel have gained recognition for creating stunning high-end spaces in the Greater Toronto Area.
The winning booth at the Living Luxe Design Show was constructed
onsite at the expansive Toronto Congress Centre in less than three days. But its conception and execution were the culmination of four months of hard work for the pair and the Wise Nadel Design team. As 2024 dawned, Nadel was vacationing in the Caribbean with her family, and drew on her surroundings for inspiration. One morning, Nadel—coffee in hand— stared out at the turquoise sea and was struck with inspiration. The concept for the Living Luxe booth emerged as a sketch on a napkin. A quick call to Wise, who was also on vacation, cemented the vision, and it was full steam ahead in January.
Front and centre in the space: A stunning slab of deep-green quartzite with exuberantly sinuous veining from Cava Surfaces was an anchor amidst the millwork and furnishings. A work of art unto itself, the eyeriveting focal point not only covered the wall behind the bar area but was also book-matched onto the counter and the island itself. “It has the most energizing and expressive movement in it,” Nadel says, “a topographic feel that makes you feel the tension between water and shoreline.” It ingeniously embraces the biophilia design trend, a holistic approach that integrates natural elements to create energizing environments.
The rest of the booth showcased the bespoke craftsmanship of Dives Design, a local millwork company with whom Wise Nadel Design
collaborates on numerous projects. Fumed oak with brass accents, glass, and bronze mirror were among the variety of materials. Underfoot, pale-toned engineered white oak herringbone floors from Nœud Atelier du Parquet evoked a sandy beach, while wavy printed Phillip Jeffries wallpaper echoed an undulating shoreline. Luxurious upholstery from Creative Custom Furnishings provided an inviting atmosphere for visitors to comfortably relax. And finally, for a playful touch, a wine wall featured bottles of delicate pink rosé from Peller Estates, an unexpected splash of hopeful, spring-like colour.
The space was aptly named Salon Privé, French for private salon.
the number of people who came to our booth, but their level of knowledge and passion for design,” says Wise. “The public could mingle with us and our colleagues in not only the design and architecture fields, but fashion and real estate as well.”
WE BROUGHT A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE FIRSTHAND A WISE NADEL-DESIGNED ROOM.
Nadel notes that over the past four years, Wise Nadel Design has had increasing requests from clients who want to upgrade their living rooms to boutique-hotelworthy lounges. This means integrating a bar area and spaces devoted to different ways of entertaining. “This approach really reinvigorates the idea of what a living room can be, and confirms that people today want to have more options while at home or when entertaining,” she says.
Historically, a salon was a gathering of people who shared similar interests in the arts or culture, and knew how to live well. The Wise Nadel Design booth captured these moments and proved a magnet for the throngs of design aficionados who attended. “What was remarkable to me was not only
And while the pair graciously accepted the award at the podium, Wise acknowledges that it took a great deal of effort from Wise Nadel Design’s in-house team and a partnership with Kilbarry Hill Construction. “Such elevated design is so much more than just a collection of beautiful finishes,” he says. “It also took the cooperation of the many suppliers, speciality tradespeople and upholsterers, many of whom donated their time and resources.”
The experience also brought home that excellent design is much more than an Instagram moment; it is something to be touched, felt and lived. “I think we showed a great example of what a booth at the Living Luxe Design Show should be in that its design was very thoughtful, purposeful and cohesive,” Nadel says. As so often happens with this in-synch duo, her business partner concurs: “We brought a way for people to experience firsthand a Wise Nadeldesigned room,” he says. “The challenge next year, of course, will be to outdo ourselves.”
ULTIMATE SHOWCASING THE IN LUXURY
The 2024 Living Luxe Design Show exceeded all expectations. We asked exhibitors for their take on this year’s highlights, and what they’re looking forward to next time around.

The rave reviews are in: the Living Luxe Design Show (LLDS) presented by JennAir was an unqualified and resounding success. “We set our sights high and, in the end, the event was more successful than we could have ever imagined,” says Jennifer Lipkowitz, Living Luxe visionary originator, publisher and driving force.
“It was the place to be that weekend for aficionados of interior design, architecture, fashion, and real estate.”
With Diana Pires of Diana Pires Events serving as show director and partner, the 2024 LLDS featured some of Canada's most eminent names in these fields. "LLDS brought together some of the most prominent names in Canada, creating an environment filled with inspiration," says Pires. "From interior to exterior design, the experience catered to all facets of their work.”
The show's public relations was handled by NKPR.
Some 13,000 attendees were immersed in a new realm of luxury through a wealth of interactive experiences, including captivating speaker sessions, inspired fashion shows by Toronto Fashion Academy and more. The innovative show was held at the expansive Toronto Congress Centre’s North Building from April 19 to 21 and showcased more than 50 immersive exhibits in the spacious hall.
“We met our goal of giving people a chance to see the magazine come to life and experience a world of opulence and innovation like never before,” says Anthony Sirianni, magazine cofounder and COO of Living Luxe media group. “But I would go as far as saying that we set a new standard for luxury exhibitions.”
As a prelude to the effervescent event, on Thursday, April 18, LLDS hosted City
Couture—Glamour in Eden, a glittering gala presented by Rogers in support of SickKids Foundation. A select audience of 300 people attended the ultra-glam VIP fashion show, highlighting Canadian talent. Very much a passion project for Lipkowitz, last year’s event raised $52,000. “This time it came to over $124,000,” she says, “for a total of $176,000 to date. So, in 2025 we should easily reach the goal of raising a quartermillion dollars.”
Rather than resting on their laurels, the partners immediately began planning next year’s event. Expect even more opportunities to celebrate all things luxurious, along with cutting-edge design and the
latest trends for our homes. “We’ve already booked two halls at the Congress Centre from April 24 to 27, 2025,” Sirianni notes. “We intend to more than double the excitement with some fresh twists that we will reveal in the coming months.”
The organizers credit all participants with exceeding expectations as well, demonstrating an exceptional level of pride in their work as creators and artisans. Here’s what some of them had to say about the experience and what they’re looking forward to in 2025:
LLDS got off to a glittering and glamorous start with the opening-night party on Friday, April 19. The

spectacular event was not only a fitting celebration and show opener, but a great networking opportunity in an elegant setting. “It was a particular highlight,” says Marin Zabzuni, founder and owner of Toronto-based design firm Contempo Studio. “We enjoyed celebrating with everyone and talking about our designs and craftsmanship.” It was the first appearance at the LLDS for this architectural designer, but ultimately proved a great teambuilding experience. And it provided valuable lessons in logistics and the art of presentation in a bustling trade show environment. “It reinforced our commitment to quality and innovation, inspiring us to continually refine our approach and expand our presence in the design industry,” he says.
Saturday, April 20 marked the inaugural Living Luxe Awards
Show, during which 13 leading lights were recognized for outstanding contribution to their respective industries (full list of winners at LivingLuxeDesignShow.ca). Vivacious Torontobased powerhouse designer Lori Morris was among them, and dazzled at the podium when accepting the coveted Living Luxe Award. The blond dynamo and her design firm House of LMD (Lori Morris Design) added it to the many awards for interior design excellence garnered over the past 36 years. “It filled the soul and the ego, and it was nice to have everyone together in one room from our interior design industry," she says.
Business was also brisk at Morris’s ultra-glam and atmospheric booth, with visitors wanting to get up close and personal with the iconic designer’s magnificent design. And it was strictly

standing room only when she appeared on the JennAir stage to give a talk: “The Making of a Brand.”
“It was a packed audience with interested and interesting onlookers all weekend. We hope it was educational and exciting for everyone who took part,” Morris says, adding "The show was an incredible experience, an elegant, exciting and dynamic show that provided great exposure for our talented community of designers, architects and trades in the city of Toronto.”
EXPANDED EVENT
This year’s show was six times larger than the previous event, encompassing more than 60,000 square feet of space for exhibitors. This inspired many to go big in showing their star products, such as allied companies Eurostar Windows and Opulence Architectural Systems. “The reaction to our display was one of genuine awe and amazement,” says Joseph Gerofsky, sales director. “When people walked in and were confronted by the 10-foot-tall, five-foot-wide Imperial liquid metal pivot doors, there were audible gasps and smiles on their faces.” Contemporary and unique in style, these stunners are coated with liquid metal, polished smooth or left textured, with subtle aged-gold effect. “We received super positive feedback and awesome exposure, which opened the door for us to start dealing with a wider network of designers, architects and builders, as well as private

homeowners,” he says. “There most definitely were a lot of influential people walking around that show.”
Another exhibitor, Prestige Build Group’s Sam Ghalenove, says: “We wanted to go all-out in representing our brand at a luxury level—and we weren’t the only ones!” Ghalenove, director of the boutique construction, consulting and project management firm, says the 200-square-foot exhibit showcased some of what his company can do, from design to construction of a home. Visitors could examine at close hand some of the workmanship and meticulous attention to detail. And all in all, he felt the high level of the show meant bringing the A-game. “Exhibiting in the Living Luxe Design Show was an exquisite journey through creativity and opulence, immersing me in a world of unparalleled elegance and innovation that left me inspired and in awe. The meticulous curation of exceptional designs and the impeccable attention to detail truly set a standard of excellence worth celebrating,” he says.
David Saini, owner of David’s Fine Linens, took a more
subdued approach, recreating some of the serene elegance that shoppers find at his company’s Castlefield and Bayview locations. “There was so much elaborate construction going on around us beforehand,” says this expert who has been sourcing and selling fine linens for more than 40 years. “But our unique and luxurious products required a softer touch.” Saini has long had a mission to introduce the Canadian market to the quality and attention to detail characterized by European textiles— think purest silk or cashmere and softest 100 per cent Egyptian cotton—and discover celebrated brands such as Frette, Sferra, and St. Pierre. “We had many visitors to the booth, many of whom you could consider a new audience,” he says. “We’re still following up on some of the contacts made.”
THE FULL SPECTRUM OF LUXURY EXHIBITORS
The many booths at the show represented a broad spectrum of companies, covering the gamut from home to lifestyle.
Interior design firms were, not surprisingly, well represented by seven companies: ADM Design, Artisan Global Design Group, Harmen Design Inc., Lori Morris Design, Michael London Design, RP Design and Wise Nadel Design.
Real estate companies also put their firms on show. Among the brokerages with booths were Barry Cohen Homes, with founder Barry Cohen speaking on Day Three, plus Corcoran Horizon Realty. BUZZ Luxury Secrets, presented by BUZZ BUZZ Media, featured a series of presentations about highend real estate along with networking.
Visitors wanting to adorn their homes with la crème de la crème of high-end furnishings could browse the offerings of
Classico Roma, Protégé Casual Outdoor Living and Unique Art & Deco. Those in the market for appliances browsed JennAir's and Smeg Canada’s products. Among companies specializing in homewares were Deki Home Inc., David’s Fine Linens and Jura.
Those considering a kitchen or bathroom makeover were not disappointed. The companies showing the magic possible in realizing a dream kitchen or bathroom included Bella Kitchens, Bloomsbury Kitchens and Fine Cabinetry, Cabernet Kitchens, Luxeme Kitchens and Vogt Industries. Kohler was a plumbing sponsor. Stone and tile purveyors were also present. Cava Surfaces
and Marbella Canada Inc. were on hand to show visitors tile surfaces, while presenting sponsor JennAir displayed the latest in kitchen appliances.
Toronto boasts many highcalibre builders, some of which had booths at the show: Prestige Build Inc., Eden Dwellings, Heika Build Group, Lucid Homes, Serpa Design Build, Yorkville Custom Homes Inc. and Landify, in addition to architectural design firm Contempo Studio.
Anyone considering a new build or renovation was able to check out the offerings of various companies specializing in aspects of construction or building components: Prospect Construction, Cube Building Systems, Noeud Atelier du Parquet, Foamcore and Igne Ferro. Sherwin-Williams was the show’s official paint sponsor.
And visitors considering investing in a new car could visit the booths of Maserati of Toronto and Alfa Romeo of Toronto. Art enthusiasts flocked to the booths created by Max Jamali Luxury Art, Tamara Bahry Art, and sponsor Nikano Studio, which created the stunning sculptures, including the horse that greeted visitors by the entrance and set an innovative and artistic tone for the event.
Flooring and carpeting were well covered by Markville Carpet & Flooring Centre and Weavers Art. And those in the market for new windows or doors flocked to booths by Doorland Group, Epal North America and the abovementioned Eurostar Windows and Opulence Architectural Systems.
WE MET OUR GOAL OF GIVING PEOPLE A CHANCE TO SEE THE MAGAZINE COME TO LIFE AND EXPERIENCE A WORLD OF OPULENCE AND INNOVATION LIKE NEVER BEFORE.
Homeowners begin to consider upgrades to their outdoor living spaces in the spring, and several companies were on hand to allow them to dream: SaunaFin Saunas and Steambaths, Suncoast Enclosures and Four Seasons Sunrooms. Patterned Concrete showed visitors how they could upgrade their patios and driveways. Floral arrangements by Rosarium Luxury Roses offered a peek at the gardening season ahead. And the show's technology sponsor was HP Canada. Atriani was the VIP Media Lounge sponsor.
SUCCESS RADIATING BEYOND
Excitement and adrenaline ran high throughout the show.
But some participants and attendees still needed an extra jolt of caffeine. Those with press passes were treated to ultra-luxe coffee breaks courtesy of official coffee sponsor Jura. “We had a booth as well that really attracted a crowd of the customers looking to buy our machines for their homes or offices,” says Joe Di Donato, vice president of operations at allied companies Faema Canada and Jura. Displays highlighted both traditional appliances such as Rocket Espresso Milano machines and groundbreaking Swiss-made Jura products for hot and cold brew speciality coffees. “I was very impressed with the show. Next year, we will likely expand the booth to include a café-like space so visitors will have a chance to really savour what these superb
machines produce,” he says.
For Cava Surfaces, the supplier of premium elegantly extravagant stone surfaces from around the world, the booth took about a year to bring to glorious fruition, says Tariq Darwish, sales manager. “It took time to design, source and install the right blocks of stone for exhibits like a freestanding bathtub,” he says. The company’s products featured in other booths as well: the spectacular quartzite slab in the award-winning Wise Nadel Design booth seen on this issue’s cover, for one. “But even more impressive was the online exposure we gained. We had hundreds of people tag us or make videos about us to post, and we gained more than 600 followers over the three days,” Darwish says. He believes that this is due to the show organizers’ active and effective social media efforts, which expanded the LLDS presence beyond Canada. “So clearly, the 2024 LLDS made some noise in a most positive and inspirational way,” he says.
All three days featured exciting runway fashion shows in collaboration with Toronto Fashion Academy. A program of powerhouse speakers was also featured at centre stage on the JennAir Stage, with panel discussions and talks presented by more than 20 captivating speakers, including designers Karim Rashid and Michael London and architect Richard Wengle. Among them was designer and fine artist Andrea McMullen, dynamic and personable owner of ADM Design Inc., a leading design firm headquartered in Newmarket. She teamed with Emily Grundy of Sherwin-Williams Canada for “In Full Colour: Using Colour Theory & Artful Inspiration in Your Interior Design.” Droves were drawn to the booth of the fine artist and designer who has designed myriad luxury

homes of all sizes throughout the GTA. “People were looking for designers who can create something to make their lives better, and at the show, they could connect with us in a special, direct way,” she says. “I believe in showing them something that’s a stretch, even more spectacular than they imagined.”
ADM’s showstopping booth depicted a model condo, a sample of one of the more than 60 that McMullen has designed in the Friday Harbour Resort in Innisfil, complete with all the sublimely chic construction elements, furniture, and decor for which the company is known.
The jewel tones (golds and burgundies), in conjunction with the
black and gold of the ceiling and chandeliers, were McMullen’s suggestion, inspired by a European buying trip. Like many of the exhibitors we spoke to, McMullen believes the LLDS innovatively plays a key role for the industry. “I think the LLDS show perfectly fills a void for not only the design and real estate communities, but also for the luxury-loving public,” she says. “And I felt that it was an important next-level showcase for Ontario and Canada, and a shining example of what a design show should be.”
You could say that the Living Luxe Design Show has elevated Toronto’s status as a global hub for creativity and innovation. And for 2025, the sky’s the limit.

LEAD DESIGNED TO
JennAir was proud to be the presenting sponsor of the 2024 Living Luxe Design Show (LLDS), which brought together industry professionals, manufacturers and designers, and explored the latest on-trend products and innovations,” says Mareike Greve, brand and marketing leader, Whirlpool Canada. The JennAir brand also served as the official appliance and stage sponsor. Given that the kitchen is the heart of the home, it seems natural that a premier name in luxury appliances should play a core role in realizing the three-day fête of innovation in interior design, fashion, architecture and all things luxury.
Since 1947, JennAir brand has been a step ahead, anticipating each advancement that would appeal to modern discerning consumers’ visions of luxury. And always with customizable options for design-conscious consumers to fulfill their limitless design visions.
“The Living Luxe Design Show was a celebration of luxury craftsmanship at its finest,” Greve continued. “At the show, JennAir was able to bring to life the brand’s two distinct design expressions—the commercial and traditional RISE™
As the presenting sponsor of the Living Luxe Design Show, JennAir® Appliances brought luminaries of the design and real estate world to centre stage.
Design Expression and the modern, minimalist NOIR™ Design Expression.” Both design expressions offer seemingly endless creativity and design options, including professional-style ranges, cooktops and wall ovens, undercounter refrigeration appliances including beverage centres, wine cellars, ice machines and more. Visitors to the show were able to see and touch examples for themselves. They could marvel at the brushed brass accents and diamond-etched handle of the RISE™ Design Expression, or dive into such intriguing details as alluring lace textures and sculpted handles of the modern, minimalist NOIR™ Design Expression.
JennAir brand showcased these and other innovations in its booth at the show, which proved a crowd favourite. The creative display took the enticing form of closed doors that emulated those of a fridge, which, once opened, revealed a lively speakeasy behind. “The immersive booth experience (was realized) in collaboration with numerous local vendors, and with design partners Brenda Danso and Aleem Kassam,” Greve says. “It was this spirit of partnership that contributed to bringing a refreshed designed show experience to the GTA.”
MISSION MAN ON A
Fashion shows were not the only high-energy, glam events gracing the 2024 Living Luxe Design Show’s main stage. Each day, there were keynote talks and panels featuring experts from the worlds of design, architecture and real estate.
On April 20, the spotlight was on Toronto designer Michael London, a man on a self-proclaimed mission to “beautify the world, one design at a time.” His presentation on the JennAir stage was titled “Get Inspired,” and it delivered on the promise. It also gave a glimpse into his work. He says on Instagram: “As a luxury interior designer, I thrive on pushing boundaries and reimagining traditional design elements to create completely innovative, luxurious spaces.”
His eponymous design company, Michael London Design, boasts an impressive portfolio of work. Among the projects are examples of his rare and refined takes on multi-unit residences such as The Pemberton and 10 Prince Arthur. There are also private homes in some of the most prestigious neighborhoods of Toronto, Ottawa and New York. In every project, big and small, he strives to create spaces that inspire, uplift, and enhance the lives of those who inhabit them.
Born and raised in Scarborough, London has forged a strong presence in the design world, drawing from more than two decades of experience. His talent was obvious early on; after a high school co-op placement at a design firm, he was later hired. Today, he maintains a passion for creating culturally inspired designs that are truly exceptional. His philosophy is to constantly push boundaries and create one-of-a-kind interiors, an innovative

approach that has earned London numerous awards and recognition. They include three from the ARIDO (Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario) and two BILD (Building Industry and Land Development Association) awards.
London, recognized as one of the leading Black interior designers, designed a mother-in-law suite that was featured in Architectural Digest magazine. His work was also featured in the book Iconic Home: Interiors, Advice, and Stories from 50 Amazing Black Designers (Abrams Books 2023). His own story is one of perseverance and resilience in an industry that is not always welcoming to visible minorities. As he states on Instagram: “My journey with Michael London Design has been marked by challenges, especially as one of the few Black designers in the luxury sector. Despite these obstacles, my commitment to supporting emerging Black designers and artists remains unwavering.”
FORWARD FASHION

music starts to play, lights illuminate the JennAir Stage, photographers jostle for their best shot. A hush falls over the packed audience, awaiting the magical moment when the first model sashays down the catwalk, showing the very latest in Canadian fashion. Such heart-pounding excitement was generated daily at the Living Luxe Design Show (LLDS), the only event of its type to put fashion shows literally at centre stage. “Every show was amazing, ultimate high energy. And all seats were filled for each,” says Jason Cameron, chief executive officer of Toronto Fashion Academy (TFA), which produced the runway shows.
For more than two decades, Cameron has worn many chic chapeaus in the entertainment and fashion industries, notably as stylist, show coordinator and model agent. He also co-founded SuperModel Canada Search and participated in several fundraisers and other special events. TFA is one of the few Canadian institutions that offer a complete spectrum of training for the fashion industry, from modeling, designing and illustration to makeup artistry and fashion photography, with locations in three countries.
There was a lot to coordinate for the LLDS shows, and TFA brought in its teams from across the country to assist. Director of operations for Western Canada Benjamin Wills oversaw the daytime shows as the evening couture show was produced by art director and director of operations for Eastern Canada, Basil Waris. Local
brands sent down the runway included: Samo Collection, Samira Morshedi’s go-to destination for all things fashion; Clutch-It, which elevates the timeless clutch bag tradition with contemporary, refined elegance; Demascare’s line of sustainable women’s and gender-neutral fashion, reflecting the designer’s love of art and architecture; House of Dwir, in which genderless fashion celebrates inclusivity, with an avant-garde spirit; and HOSH Canada, founded by Freddy Dinganga, “Hosh,” with a mission to create high-quality, couture pieces designed to be worn forever. Celebrities were spotted in the crowds, along with media and the general public. “The fashion shows were a highlight of LLDS,” Cameron says. “And they not only showcased the designers but helped create the buzz needed for them to gain more of a local and international following.”
The scope widened on Friday, April 19, when world designers sent collections down the catwalk during the International Fashion Encounter. Since 2015, TFA has organized similar events showcasing trends and talent from around the globe. For this edition, Basil Waris served as producer for the show that featured designers from as far afield as Mexico and India.
Cameron already has signed on to organize the shows at the 2025 expanded LLDS. “An event like this that brings together fashion, home design, architecture and real estate just didn’t exist before. It fills a void beautifully, and we can’t wait to be part of it again,” he says.

The waterfront setting of this two-storey townhouse in Innisfil’s Friday Harbour resort was ideal for the new owners. The retired couple could see themselves blissfully breakfasting al fresco on the balcony and inviting future guests to tie up at the private boat slip. And, since the unit backs onto the lake, they would enjoy all-day peace and tranquility.
But their enthusiasm evaporated upon viewing the threebedroom home’s existing builder-basic interior. “They have exquisite taste and high-quality standards, and actually take great joy in renovating a home, which is rare,” notes Andrea McMullen, the designer they entrusted with its complete transformation into the functional and chic oasis it is today. “So, they were involved at every step as we stripped it to the studs and set out to give them a completely new and different look.”
The vivacious and personable owner of ADM Design Inc. is uniquely qualified for the job: She owns a home in the Friday Harbour community and has been known to ride a Sea-Doo to the job sites of the more than 50
upscale townhomes and condominiums she designed for fellow residents. ADM, since 1991 a leading design firm headquartered in Newmarket, also has a model home and boutique-style retail store on the resort boardwalk— showcasing elevated style in furniture, lighting, artwork and accessories—and another retail location.
The couple gave McMullen carte blanche. They also dropped a hint that they loved fluting, a hot trend in decor and architecture that refers to vertical grooves on a surface. The designer ingeniously decided to go big, bold and different with it to add some much-needed architectural interest. “We sourced some gorgeous white oak millwork with narrow fluting,” she says. “The effect adds warmth and a texture that's bold but not distracting, while reflecting the understated elegance they love.”
The fluted millwork covers an entire wall in the living room, an eye-riveting focal point in the open-concept main floor that also gracefully houses a television and cleverly conceals the media centre. In the adjoining kitchen, the millwork is echoed on the fronts of two upper cabinets

flanking the stylish range hood covered with a rich gold-veined quartz slab by Cosentino, the same material gracing the waterfalledge island, countertops and backsplash. The fluting theme is reiterated on cabinetry in the three upstairs bedrooms, providing design details on bathroom vanities, bedroom side tables, closets and other unexpected places.
McMullen once again showed her legendary flair in sourcing unique luxury products around the world. This time, she and design manager Chelsea Brilhante sourced many of the home’s distinctive custom furniture pieces at the Las Vegas Furniture Market. They
also found original artwork that the homeowners loved, and inspired tastefully colourful decor accents. “One painting highlighted a deep forest green, which we replicated in a paint colour that appears throughout the home on accent walls, the kitchen island, and accessories,” says Brilhante. “It coordinates beautifully with all the creamy neutral colours and wood tones and really helps bring the overall look together.”
Even usually neglected areas, such as the main floor hallway toward the rear of the home, got a luxe update along with the custom cabinetry and seating area, designed by ADM’s architectural designer Lana Pihut. Custom-stained white oak flooring by Nœud Atelier du Parquet in Toronto creates a regal entranceway. Laid in a unique and distinctive thin herringbone pattern, it continues into the laundry and powder rooms, spaces that usually have tile underfoot.
“We also applied it to the powder room ceiling,” McMullen says. “It was quite a feat to accommodate lighting and venting, but the effect is so striking and has received rave reviews.”
McMullen and her team are keenly aware that Friday Harbour units have particular storage concerns. Maximizing every square
inch took ingenuity. One solution: create a hidden cleaning supply pantry under the stairs leading to the second floor’s three bedrooms; it’s concealed behind a fluted feature wall. In the principal suite, the bathroom was reconfigured so an additional 20 square feet could be devoted to the bedroom’s walk-in closet. Off it, the design called for a unique cantilevered desk. “We know from designing hundreds of condos across the GTA that multi-purpose is the way to save space,” McMullen says. “And this solution gives a very clean look.”
ADM excels at delivering turnkey projects on time, and in this case, everything down to the custom furniture, lighting and accessories was planned in advance and completed within two months. It helped that the homeowners started the process before they had keys in hand, and were so engaged and positive at every step, allowing a special bond to develop. “The entire project was so joyous,” says McMullen. “I spoke with them many times after movein, and they kept saying how much they loved the place . . . and that not only did they gain a new beautiful home and new community, but because I live nearby, a new friend and neighbour.”

Contempo Studio creates a contemporary and minimalist masterpiece in a very on-trend fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese styles.

The most striking feature of this stunning standout home in the Sunnylea area of Etobicoke is what you don’t see: There is no clutter in the sublimely chic minimalist abode. All very intentional, according to architectural designer Marin Zabzuni, who oversaw the project. “From the outset, it was obvious that the homeowners would love what is known as Japandi style, a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design,” says Zabzuni, the founder and owner of Toronto-based design firm Contempo Studio. “A couple with two small children and busy careers, they resonated with the kind of casual yet thoughtful approach it is known for.”
Japan and Scandinavia may seem worlds apart,
yet their design aesthetics have much in common. Both emphasize simplicity, sustainability, and neutral colour schemes, and reject fussy or jarring details. From the Nordic side, Japandi takes light, bright and functional features, adding the exquisitely crafted and sophisticated elements of Japanese design. The resulting fusion has steadily gained a following in recent years, Zabzuni notes, no doubt for the pared-down and organic way in which it creates a serene ambience, something coveted by all homeowners today, and this couple in particular.
The five-bedroom, two-storey home may be entered through the garage or the front door that leads into a graceful foyer, with a home office to the right.
Passing a mudroom and down a hallway, stylish and welcoming open-concept family room, dining and kitchen areas beckon. At every step, light seems to flood in from all sides, a key element of Japandi style, thanks to a plethora of floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. The Contempo team spent a great deal of time with their placement and the home’s layout to make the 3,100-square-foot home feel larger as well.
To further enhance the serenity and elegance, Contempo Studio created an airy aesthetic. Underfoot, engineered pale white oak flooring runs throughout; it’s sturdy enough to resist the onslaught of two small boys. Its ultra-wide planks add sophistication and natural warmth. Walls are painted a pristine, snowy white in keeping with Scandinavian style, and serve as the perfect backdrop for the clients’ cherished original works of art. In stark contrast, windows and doors are rimmed with a rich black reminiscent of Japanese lacquerware.
Less is more in Japandi design, as clean lines and an overall sense of mindful minimalism prevail, which means keeping as many possessions as possible behind closed doors. Throughout the home, the designer ingeniously incorporated storage solutions
into the design. Flat-front kitchen cabinets faced with rift-cut oak, for instance, have no visible hardware to mar the clean lines, and the facing island is a seamless porcelain expanse with a waterfall edge. The refrigerator resides behind a panel, too, as does another unique feature. “The clients wanted a pantry, and we wanted to invisibly integrate it into the kitchen’s visual design,” Zabzuni says. “So we hid it in plain sight behind a secret door, a practical yet fun touch that appeals to both kids and adults.”
Because there are so few details, every one of them from light fixtures to door hinges becomes especially important. In the principal bedroom, jet-black hinges and hardware become ornamental played against snowy white walls. The stairway leading to the top floor’s four bedrooms, custom-designed and cantilevered off the wall, seems to float. Crafted of steel with white oak risers to match the floors, it adds a sculptural design element.
“We also inset lighting to reduce the need for lamps or ceiling fixtures,” the designer says. “And we incorporated them in a way that feels organic, purposeful and beautiful at the same time.”

materials. In the principal ensuite bathroom, a gentle glow emanates from behind the vanity mirrors, illuminating tile and wood surfaces and eliminating the need for wall sconces while creating the spa-like ambience the clients craved.
The homeowners now happily enjoy family life in their new home, finding that the upscale, chic design also functions beautifully when they entertain, something they like to do at least once a
month. And Zabzuni can add the project to Contempo Studio’s impressive portfolio of exquisite custom luxury homes. “We took a very considered Japandi-esque approach, being highly selective of every detail,” he says. “Each had to elevate and emphasize the design while also adding comfort and warmth. And the end result provides a beautiful setting for an active family to also enjoy a feeling of serenity.”
SOPHISTICATION Playful
Designer Diana Rose takes a deep dive into elegance to create a stylish and ludic paradise in a four-season pool house.

Their Markham home was ideal for the owners, but lacked one crucial amenity: a place where their three children could hang out and have fun with their friends. Another strong motivator: “The kids were all under 12 at the time, and the parents wanted to keep them off their devices and into an active and healthy lifestyle,” says designer Diana Rose, principal and creative director at Diana Rose Design. “Since the entire family enjoyed swimming, a pool was the right solution for everyone.”
With all-season enjoyment in mind, they wanted an indoor pool, but city-imposed restrictions meant it could not be installed inside the home. Vaughan architect Ian Robertson designed a separate 1,500-square-foot structure to accommodate it, connected to the main house via a tunnel. Rose was given the challenge of turning the cavernous space into an inviting oasis. And a conventional spa-like, monotone and minimalist design didn’t seem to fit the lively family of five. “Instead, I incorporated a lot of colour and texture,” says the designer. “All in the name of
creating a look at once whimsical, playful and sophisticated, but also a little bit dreamy, a joyful place in which the family could escape from the day-to-day.”
There’s plenty of room for both recreation and serious aquatic pursuits in the 32-by-16-foot saltwater pool, which is nine feet deep at one end. At the shallower end, an adjacent circular jetted whirlpool bath invites relaxation. The pool’s long sides each have fountain features: A waterfall cascades down an inky-toned stone surface with a television monitor over it on one side, a series of single fountains provides a happy salute on the other. At night, the water dances and sparkles, illuminated by discreet LED lighting. Over the pool, a skylight is inset into the soaring vaulted ceiling. Rose envisaged its expanse covered with a deep blue mural depicting a starry sky just before dawn. “It was painted by hand, which required many hours on a scaffolding. The finished effect is ethereal and amazing, by day and night,” she says.
The designer once again shows a deft hand in blending elevated contemporary style with a soupçon of Old-World elegance. For a
sumptuous and classic spa touch, she made lavish use of natural stone slabs and tiles, using luxurious materials in a highly original way. In the poolside lounge area, the fireplace wall is covered with a chic expanse of quartzite from Brazil with edgy veining reminiscent of modern art. Played against it on the adjacent wall, large marble tiles in different textures and patterns are patchworked, separated by inlaid gold-toned metal strips to create a contemporary riff on mosaic. Overhead, a sea urchin-inspired crystal chandelier adds a touch of chic whimsy.
Slabs of onyx, a semiprecious stone much prized in decor, add a jewel-like quality to the bathroom, steam room and changing areas. Their exceptional translucency creates a luminous glow, adding a touch of sophistication to the spaces. In the massive steam room, one wall features pink patterned onyx. The floor is clad in tiles designed to resemble pebbles, providing a highly pleasurable, walking-on-thebeach sensation for bare feet. Rose’s favourite area is the bathroom, where elegant blue onyx sinks coordinate with the steam room stone, as does a striking pink onyx bench. And there are other playful and
unexpected touches to be found in the area, among them unique cabinet knobs handcrafted of agate stone.
These noble materials also inspired the colour scheme. Some doors and cabinets are painted a cheerful aqua or soothing pink to coordinate with the onyx hues. They also appear in the poolside kitchenette area where a family-sized refrigerator is concealed behind a cabinet panel and a microwave stands ready to reheat snacks. An island provides room for barstools on each side, also flanking a three-sided banquette covered in pink and blue leather. The luxe look is part retro diner, part swank South Beach bistro. “The homeowners tell me it’s a popular hangout spot,” says Rose. “The kids and their friends commandeer the banquette at get-togethers, while the adults naturally gravitate to the bar area.”
During the summer, the family enjoys indoor-outdoor living by simply opening the Nana wall, a set of bi-fold glass-panelled doors. The children can have a swim and then run outside to play in the back yard. And everyone might easily enjoy a post-barbecue dip. Once autumn arrives, the doors are kept shut, keeping out cold air and letting in lots of natural light. “The pool house is a paradise retreat, surpassing any vacation destination,” the homeowner says. “It functions beautifully with meticulous attention to both trendy and timeless design, courtesy of Diana Rose.”
Elegant Style LIVING IN
Three suites, two generations, one deluxe home
By Phillipa Rispin
This elegant home in Mississauga accommodates two very specific purposes stipulated by the homeowners: it’s ideal for entertaining, and it gives the parents and their adult daughter and son their individual private areas, also. “We chose Lorne Park because it’s a secure neighbourhood close to both the peaceful Lakeshore and the hustle and bustle and convenience of city living,” says Sonali Sahni, daughter of the house. “When we were ready to build, Richard Kossak from New Age Design was recommended to us,
and he understood what we were looking for.”
Kossak’s plans were executed by Ornella Homes, with a great deal of input from Sahni herself. She worked closely with architect, builder, and suppliers to ensure a striking and luxurious interior with minimal decor and natural light. The early days of the Covid-19 pandemic complicated the designing and decorating, and “involved lots of Zoom calls,” Sahni says. She particularly praises the owner and staff of Magnum Millwork in that difficult time: “They did such a wonderful job.”

The property’s semi-circular driveway affords ample parking for up to 10 cars, and visitors are welcomed by a large covered porch. The oak front door opens to the bright open-concept main floor, which offers soaring ceilings and oversized windows providing panoramic views of the covered patio, pool, and greenery of the back yard.
Ceilings in the foyer and living room rise to 20 feet, the rest of the main floor and the second floor have 10-foot ceilings, and the finished basement has nine-foot ceilings. All the public rooms are generously sized and follow a black, white, and gold colour scheme. The results of Magnum’s exacting standards are visible throughout the home, in sleek cabinetry and striking wall treatments. The effect is stunning in the double-height living room; it features a fireplace and television screen inset into book-matched pale “marble” wall panels (wallpaper, in fact), flanked on each side by dark wood panels with lighted niches that have a golden glow. The room is furnished, like all of the home, with custom-made pieces. Dark velvet upholstery and goldcoloured soft furnishings contrast warmly with the white floor.

an elevator shaft, acting as functional art. The staircase risers are open, the elevator cab is nearly all glass, for a light and bright effect. All three floors of the stairwell’s back wall are covered in wallpaper with a threedimensional geometric design. Off the living room is the dining room, furnished with cream-coloured chairs and a creamy beige quartz tabletop. The white walls feature wainscoting. A sparkling chandelier hangs over the table, and it and the living room light fixtures are custom made by Lando Lighting. They are synchronized with the furniture colour scheme and over-all contemporary style of the home.
The kitchen is built for practical use yet continues the elegant decor with extensive dark cabinetry offset by the white tile floor and a bank of windows down one wall. Its special features include a pantry, a servery, and a spice kitchen. Top-of-the-line Subzero and Wolf appliances are cased in, and black Dekton forms countertops and backsplashes. An expansive island is topped with quartz for additional prep space.
Down one side of the living room is a bank of large windows by Ridley. The opposite side features a glass and iron staircase built around
The main floor accommodates several more areas: a family room with an inset fireplace, a laundry room with a dog shower, and a mudroom. Here, too, is a private sanctuary: the parents’ suite. This suite is quietly
luxurious, with large windows overlooking the patio, and clever millwork that disguises the doors to the large walk-in closet and the bathroom.
The second floor is private spaces. Sahni and her brother each have their own expansive rooms with walk-in closets and ensuite bathrooms with heated floors. There is another laundry room as well as a guest room.
The mood changes downstairs in the basement—perfect for entertaining.
The main area has a spectacular wet bar with glass display shelves against a backlit onyx wall. If residents (and visitors accommodated in either of the
two guest rooms) desire more salubrious pursuits, there’s a Pilates/therapy room and a gym equipped with a sauna and a jetted tub. A prayer room can also be used as a home theatre.
Despite the family’s pleasure in their luxurious home, circumstances have now changed. Each child is moving to a different country, and the parents want to downsize, so the house is for sale through Jaz Heir at Hammond International Properties. Leaving is bittersweet: “We built a very loving home here,” says Sahni.
