As the seasons change, I like to embrace the colder weather, bringing our activities inside: the living room’s fireplace becomes the gathering place, the reading nook becomes the Sunday morning lounge and the dining room once again becomes the center of entertaining. For me, it is not about changing the decor; it is about changing how we use our spaces.

New Season, New Partnerships, New Celebrations

As the crisp air and vibrant colours of fall settle in, we are excited to welcome you to our Autumn issue. On my daily walks, watching the greens of summer turn to rich oranges and reds, I’m reminded that autumn is a season of change and transition. Businesses prepare for the high season, and kids—including my own—get ready for their first days back at school. Change can be daunting, and it’s natural to feel butterflies when facing something new. However, with confidence and courage, we often find ourselves stronger on the other side. I’m thrilled to share that more than 85 per cent of the Living Luxe Design Show is already sold out—a fantastic achievement. Even more exciting, the dates for LLDS 2025 have been confirmed for April 24 to 27. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our team, exhibitors and supporters, whose hard work made this year’s show such a success. Special thanks go to JennAir, which has signed a partnership as our presenting sponsor, stage sponsor and official appliance sponsor for 2025. Without their support, none of this would be possible. LLDS is truly our magazine brought to life, and I can promise that 2025 will be filled with new experiences and luxury like you’ve never seen.

While the summer focused on sales, this fall we transition into exciting events and the building of partnerships with amazing organizations across the city. For the first time, we were accepted as press for the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have witnessed the outstanding talent in Toronto during the Festival’s two weeks. I’m already looking forward to next year’s films and the remarkable stories behind them.

During TIFF, we were part of several meaningful events. We were invited to the Women in Film event presented by Halo & Co and The Kit, a significant celebration of Canadian female filmmakers and producers who offer a unique lens in cinema. As a woman in the media industry, I understand how vital it is to lift up women in these fields. We also attended the Artists for Peace and Justice gala, hosted by NKPR, which supports the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada and Artists for Peace and Justice, and we are proud to have been a part of it. Additionally, as a media sponsor of the Chair’s Dinner, we celebrated the world premiere of Paul Anka: His Way. Having grown up listening to his music, I found it a deeply personal and unforgettable experience to hear his story and his voice live. Our thanks go to Liberty Entertainment Group and Canada’s Walk of Fame for allowing us to sponsor such a memorable event.

Beyond TIFF, this autumn brings many opportunities to collaborate and celebrate milestones. We are proud to be the official media sponsor for Canaroma’s 45th anniversary—a truly remarkable achievement. We also attended the Mount Sinai gala, an inspirational evening celebrating the hospital’s 100th anniversary. Additionally, we are a media sponsor of Elevate Festival from October 1 to 3. For those unfamiliar with it, Elevate showcases Canadian innovation by bringing together leaders in tech, and we’re thrilled to be part of this important event.

As we embrace this season of change, we’re excited about new partnerships, events and opportunities on the horizon, and a possible new look for Living Luxe!

Finding Warmth In is Cool Season

As I write this on the first day of autumn, the wind carries a sharp bite that promises cooler days ahead. I couldn’t be more excited. For me, fall is the best time of the year—it’s a time of fresh starts, cozy sweaters, letting go of things that no longer serve us, the anticipation of the holidays . . . I could go on.

As a lifelong bookworm, I think my love of fall is also because it’s peak reading season. At no other time is it more tempting to forgo all other plans in favour of sinking into an armchair with a cup of tea and a good book—I could happily bury my nose in a novel until the revelry of December begins.

But for many, the start of fall can herald a tough period. Whether it’s holidays spent far from loved ones, days that are more dark than light or panic as the end of another year looms, it can be a lonely time, so take care of yourself (and start taking vitamin D now). Whatever you might feel as the days grow shorter, I hope you’ll join me for a moment of gratitude. I’m a firm believer in practising gratitude (and yes, much like running or playing piano, gratitude requires a bit of practice before it comes readily). While it doesn’t fix everything, taking the time each day to focus on all that I have has helped enable me to more thoroughly enjoy the present.

This year, I find myself grateful for the community of makers and creatives that enliven Toronto’s design scene whom I had the privilege of getting to know while building this issue. Within the pages of our magazine, we hear from rugmakers and interior designers, tile importers and winemakers. I am moved by their commitment to their crafts and encouraged that we have so many capable and passionate people leading the community. We honour those—such as Tamara Bahry with Melanoma Canada—who are working hard to give back to those in need and we raise our glasses to celebrate Liberty Entertainment Group’s restaurant, DaNico, which just earned its first Michelin star.

I’m particularly grateful for the time spent getting to know the incredible Pooja Handa, who welcomed us into her home for our cover shoot this issue. Down-to-earth and effortlessly stylish, Handa inspires me with her endurance, spunk and commitment to being herself. Her elegant multigenerational Toronto home, designed by Harvey Wise of Wise Nadel Design, is a testament to the timelessness of following one’s heart rather than fleeting trends.

In each story, there’s something new to be learned and someone who is excited to share their passions with the world. So reader, wherever and however this finds you, I invite you to light a candle, grab a mug of something warm and lose yourself in the pages of our magazine for an hour or two. I hope you’ll enjoy reading these stories as much as we’ve enjoyed telling them.

Happy reading,

THE WARM EMBRACE OF NOSTALGIA

Where legacy meets innovation—exploring fashion, flavours and homes that evoke cherished memories.

As the leaves turn gold and the air becomes crisp, there’s a warmth that fills the city—a comforting sense of nostalgia. For me, autumn is a time of reflection, of reconnecting with things that have shaped us and moments that continue to inspire us. I’m excited to share with you some of the ways we’re celebrating nostalgia, from iconic fashion and luxury properties with a sense of legacy to a modern twist on beloved flavours of our youth. After all, nostalgia isn’t just about remembering; it’s about celebrating the things that have made us who we are today.

In this issue, we revisit such cherished favourites as Bayview Village, where I began my career, and Corcoran Horizon Realty, which introduced me to New York real estate and is now expanding into Canada. There’s a touch of vintage in every corner, from the timeless styles of Sorel’s Varsity shoe collection to the nostalgic flavours of Candy Can beverages designed to bring back memories of carefree childhood days. And for those seeking a winter escape, Freed Blue Mountain has exciting new developments on the horizon.

PERFECTIONISM AND FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY

Through the haze of social media filters and the carefully curated lives we see online, the quest for cosmetic perfection can lead to unrealistic expectations and disappointment.

Nowadays, we have incredible access to other’s personal lives on social media. People share their experiences, celebrities post intimate photos and surgeons document their work daily. But often, we see only the final outcome, not the process leading up to it. And, as many images in the media are modified and filtered, what appears online is not always a reflection of reality—but it can still have a big impact on what we think is achievable. Expecting immediate perfection is something

cosmetic surgeons are seeing more and more, but even the most excellent surgeon can’t promise a perfect result and certainly not right away. So, what is a cosmetic perfectionist and why are they on the rise? When is perfection something to strive for and when does it go too far? Dr. Philip Solomon MD, FRCSC, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeon, practising Facial Plastic Surgery in Toronto, discusses how to identify and confront perfectionism in cosmetic surgery.

Living Luxe (LL): Dr. Solomon, let’s start with how you define a perfectionist. Is it a positive trait in cosmetic surgery?

Dr. Philip Solomon (PS): I would define a perfectionist in the world of cosmetic surgery as someone who has a very specific vision or image of what they want their result to look like. What can be challenging for this personality type is that they may have a difficult time if the immediate outcome does not align definitively with their vision. A perfectionist may also have a degree of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) and may obsess over the most minor imperfection, which can lead to a lack in self-esteem or even depression.

Working with a perfectionist patient can become a challenge if the perfectionism impacts their ability to manage or cope with the recovery phase when swelling plays a role and the result doesn’t look “perfect” right out of the gate. Surgery is not 100 per cent predictable as results can vary, which can be challenging for both the surgeon and the patient.

LL: So how do you determine during consultation if a patient is a perfectionist and how do you navigate that at an early stage?

PS: The consultation is a meeting between the patient and the surgeon where we learn about each other. From our perspective, we are interviewing the patient to ensure they are a candidate for surgery in all capacities—physically, emotionally and psychologically. We like to know what their motivation is for surgery and determine if it’s reasonable. We also use this opportunity to educate the patient about the procedure of interest and what the recovery entails. We can often get a sense if a patient is a perfectionist at this early stage. Quite often, the patients who want the slightest or most minimal change are those seeking perfection.

LL: Have you seen a change since COVID when it comes to the desire for cosmetic surgery and the need for perfectionism?

PS: Absolutely. There was a significant rise in plastic surgery during COVID as people worked from home and had the downtime to recover from surgery. What often drove people to want surgery was videoconferencing, as people saw themselves from a different vantage point. This was known as the “zoom boom.” Not all cases

were driven by the perfectionist mentality. However, there is no question that we live in a time when selfie photos and videos impact how people see themselves.

LL: When does the quest for perfection go too far?

PS: The last thing we want is for a patient to struggle in any way after having had cosmetic surgery. We want the experience to be positive and fulfilling. Setting realistic goals is critical with all patients but especially with patients who are predisposed to being perfectionists. Michael Jackson is a perfect example of someone whose perfectionism led to multiple surgeries that inevitably damaged his nasal structure and its appearance. There was also the New York socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein, known in the media as the “cat woman,” who underwent multiple plastic surgery procedures that led her to look somewhat unnatural and “cat-like.” The desire for the perfect cosmetic surgery result often comes from a place of deep dissatisfaction with a physical trait and wanting to perfect its appearance. It’s normal to want to change something you don’t like about yourself, but it can become unhealthy if you disregard the limitations of what is realistic and attainable with surgery.

LL: What is your advice to patients seeking perfection with cosmetic surgery?

PS: Ensure you have an open and honest relationship with your surgeon and that your goals are realistic and achievable. Educate yourself on what the healing process looks like, and be sure you can manage what is required. Plastic surgery can be a fabulous experience for those looking to improve rather than wanting to perfect.

LUXURY HORIZONS

As Camrost Felcorp nears the completion of its newest Exchange District tower, EXS is poised to become a stylish hotel and residential destination in Mississauga.

It’s hard to imagine a nondescript office tower and parking lot once dominated the site where one of Canada’s most innovative new neighbourhoods is coming to life: EXS, a luxury 30-storey building, is in its final stages of construction in downtown Mississauga. Across the street from Square One Shopping Centre, Canada’s second largest mall, EXS is the latest installment in the Exchange District, an award-winning master-planned community launched in 2018 by high-rise developer Camrost Felcorp and the city of Mississauga.

The glass and metal-panelled EXS tower claims the title of Mississauga’s first hotel residence. Its bottom two floors in the

podium will house a 26-room boutique hotel, as well as two storeys of offices and a mix of condo and rental suites. Residents will love coming home to the hotel’s elegant doubleheight lobby and 20,000 square feet of amenities, including a half basketball court, indoor pool and gym. They’ll also enjoy private access to event and work-from-home spaces and an outdoor terrace with barbecues.

Camrost Felcorp, which specializes in multipurpose residential buildings, has built more than 80 buildings across the Greater Toronto Area throughout its 50-year history, comprising 2,000 residences and two million square feet of office and retail space. The company prides itself on its vertically integrated process, which means its team handles everything from purchase to construction. “We are one of the few developers who do all the heavy lifting in-house,” says Christopher Castellano, Camrost Felcorp’s vice president of marketing and sales. This allows the team to curate every element of the development and ensure that it lives up to the high standards the company’s projects have become known for.

Ranging from 500 to 1,000 square feet, each residential unit at EXS has its own balcony and is equipped with allwhite Trevisana kitchen cabinets imported from Italy, Miele appliances and quartz countertops with matching roll-up backsplashes. “The type of person we see living here is a young professional who wants a connected lifestyle,” Castellano says. “It’s a three-minute walk to the upcoming Hurontario LRT station.”

EXS joins Camrost Felcorp’s three other Exchange District high-rise condo buildings, EX1, EX2, and EX3, which have accrued more than 50 awards. “This is one of the largest developments the GTA has ever seen. About 3,000 people will live here,” Castellano says. “But the buildings have gone up with a real sense of unity.”

To maximize convenience, the Exchange District will have a grocery store and “restaurant row” with several dining options, plus a rooftop restaurant on the 42nd floor of EX2 and seasonal pop-up areas with rotating bars and eateries. The developers also incorporated opportunities for art throughout, including a gallery, pedestrian piazza with room for a sculpture garden, and performance space.

As EXS’s construction nears the finish line, its first residents should be ready to move in this fall. As a bonus to attract new tenants, the developer is offering limited-time prelease incentives. To learn more, go to www.rentEXS.com.

SMASHING OUT SKIN CANCER

Philanthropist Tamara Bahry fights against melanoma on the court at Melanoma Canada’s Smash Out Skin Cancer Celebrity Pickleball Tournament.

Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma, one of the most aggressive and potentially deadly forms of skin cancer. It doesn’t discriminate, affecting people of all ages, genders and races. The good news is that it’s largely preventable with proactive sun safety measures. As a passionate supporter of Melanoma Canada, I’ve seen firsthand how crucial education and awareness are in the fight against this deadly disease.

My personal connection to skin cancer has only deepened my commitment to raising awareness as I’ve watched loved ones battle the effects of melanoma. Thanks to Melanoma Canada’s Mole Mobile initiative, I discovered that I had actinic keratosis, the most common precancer. Catching it early made me more committed to sun safety and skin health.

Melanoma Canada is dedicated to changing the narrative around skin cancer. The organization provides crucial resources and

support services for patients and caregivers while championing prevention strategies. Their mission inspired me to get involved, and it’s why I’m so committed to supporting their initiatives.

This year, I’m looking forward to participating in their second annual Smash Out Skin Cancer Celebrity Pickleball Tournament. This unique event, featuring Billy Baldwin and Chynna Phillips, will bring together athletes, celebrities and community members, all rallying to raise funds and awareness for skin cancer prevention. The event will be electric—full of spirited matches, laughter and powerful moments of connection. The funds raised from the tournament will support Melanoma Canada’s newly launched Sun Guardians Grant Program, which provides sun safety solutions— such as sunscreen, shade structures and educational materials—to youth in rural, remote and underserved areas, including First Nations communities, where access

is often limited or prohibitively expensive. The Sun Guardians initiative aims to change that by equipping camps, daycares, sports teams and community centres with the necessary tools to keep kids safe in the sun.

As I gear up for the second annual Smash Out Skin Cancer tournament, I can’t help but feel excited about the impact we’re making, driving change and educating communities about the importance of sun safety. The more people understand the risks associated with unprotected sun exposure, the more we can prevent melanoma before it starts.

I invite you to learn more about Melanoma Canada, whether as a volunteer or a supporter; we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against skin cancer.

BESPOKE IN BLACK

In Toronto’s Little Italy neighbourhood, DaNico’s innovative Italian cuisine and contemporary gothic interiors garner global attention and a Michelin star.

DaNico hasn’t yet been open a full year but it’s quickly gaining international acclaim. The fine dining venue at College and Bathurst Streets recently earned DaNico its first Michelin star thanks to Chef Daniele Corona’s worldly Italian cuisine and has been shortlisted for two International Hotel & Property Awards for restaurant design in the Americas and globally.

“This project is a passion of ours,” says Nadia Di Donato, vice president and creative director of Liberty Entertainment Group, the hospitality team behind DaNico. “It’s part of my husband Nick’s and my mission to give back to our city by taking iconic buildings and infusing them with renewed life as we elevate Toronto’s culinary scene.”

“THIS PROJECT IS A PASSION OF OURS. IT’S PART OF MY HUSBAND NICK’S AND MY MISSION TO GIVE BACK TO OUR CITY.”

Creating DaNico has been a labour of love, so much so that the Di Donatos named it after their first grandchild. To house a project born of so much passion, they needed a special space. The former bank building that ultimately set the project in motion is one of Toronto’s architectural heritage gems with Doric pilasters framing the arched doorway and a rare Versace ceramic-tiled facade paying tribute to Roman temples. “The interior had all been gutted, except for the safe, which we’ve turned into wine storage,” Di Donato says. “The rest was a blank canvas where I set out to honour the ornate exterior with a modern interpretation that integrates some of the urban grit in this part of Little Italy.”

Opting for natural materials when possible, Di Donato imported 15-foot solid wood doors from a 19th-century Italian villa for the

entrance. She retained the breathtaking grandeur of the 30-foot ceilings while establishing intimacy by expertly playing with scale, lighting, textures and even sound against black walls with burgundy undertones.

Her core inspiration came from the gothic flavour of three 12-by6-foot mixed-media installations, created in collaboration with Toronto artists Max Jamali and Peter Triantos; they’re framed sideby-side along the main wall. “The design treatment incorporated into the windows echoes the grandness of church organs,” Di Donato adds. Drawing on her theatrical production experience, she installed lasers to pinpoint the lighting for each table, so the space retains its cloaked mystique without leaving anyone in the dark.

Di Donato eliminated any chance of a cavernous echo from the high ceilings by positioning a multitude of smaller speakers at a 12-foot height. All the sofas and chairs are upholstered in thick velvety fabrics that not only make for luxurious seating but also absorb sound. “The chairs are just slightly firmer so they have a regalness,” Di Donato adds.

Originally from Naples, Corona moved to Canada to become the executive chef of Liberty Group’s Don Alfonso 1890. Under his leadership, it was named 50 Top Italy’s Best Italian Restaurant Outside of Italy in 2021 and is one of Toronto’s first Michelin-starred restaurants. Now, he’s ready to take on a new challenge, one where he can fully dive into his unique style of marrying Italian and Asian ingredients. “He’s just so exceptional that we decided to support his innovative palate,” Di Donato says. “The restaurant seats only 60, so he and his team can prepare their Michelin-worthy dishes.” As the world turns its eyes to the luxe and moody dining room at DaNico with high expectations, Corona, with the help of the Di Donatos, is ready to deliver.

Toronto’s Weavers Art rug showroom is a modernist design lover’s haven for high-quality rugs. Here’s what to look for.

What comes to mind when thinking of a rug? For many people, it’s probably an opulent Persian or perhaps a timeless jute. It can be a daunting task trying to find hand-knotted rugs that appeal to modernist tastes, but finding one that you really love is worth spending time on.

“Having the right rug puts your stamp, your mark, in your home,” says Weavers Art founder and creative director Michael Pourvakil.

Born from Pourvakil’s deep passion for high-quality rugs, Weavers Art has become a go-to destination for GTA design enthusiasts on the hunt for the finest options. Now in its third decade, the showroom has an extensive collection, with everything from transitional Persians to neutral contemporary styles, and many are designed in-house by Weavers Art’s head designer Wan Ki. For those seeking bold and modern rugs, the showroom stocks an exceptional array.

New to the Weavers Art collection is a selection of freeform rugs, which feature irregular shapes to pack a modern design punch. Take, for instance,

the Splash Zone rug, a freeform variety made of hand-knotted silk and wool: it boasts an amorphous oval shape with colours that radiate out in a gradient. Others in the collection look like the cross-section of a geode or a blooming flower. Opting for a rug beyond the typical round or rectangular shape is a trend that’s gaining momentum as designers seek to incorporate playful and unexpected elements into their spaces.

being handcrafted in Nepal, each has a density of 22,500 knots per square foot. “This exceptional collection will appeal to people who love art but also to anyone who wants a rare and distinctive statement rug worth collecting,” Pourvakil notes.

“HAVING THE RIGHT RUG PUTS YOUR STAMP, YOUR MARK, IN YOUR HOME.”

For a more refined modern flair, look for rugs created in collaboration with contemporary artists. In the works now at Weavers Art is a collection created with Toronto abstract artist Pietro Adamo, whose colourful paintings have been exhibited worldwide. With vivid pieces that masterfully blend hues, the rugs make for a joyful and sumptuous focal point. Currently

The Weavers Art showroom also includes a vast Modern Art collection, featuring sophisticated abstract rugs that would look right at home on a gallery wall. For a slightly more muted but still modern look, rugs with geometric patterns, such as the Cubes & Pyramids carpet, imbue a space with a subtle nod to Bauhaus design.

No matter an individual’s style, rugs should be chosen with care and longevity in mind. “They are timeless and an investment,”

says Pourvakil. “You live with them, walk on them and after 30 years, they will still look brand new.” Good rugs are the grounding element for a room, and with half of our lives spent indoors, they become the backdrop for countless memories and occasions.

Growing up in Tehran, Pourvakil developed an appreciation early on for the artistry of well-made rugs. “In Iran, you may drive a Toyota, but your home will have a $100,000 rug in it,” he says. “It’s our heritage and custom.” It’s a legacy he has proudly brought to Canada with Weavers Art—now he sources one-ofa-kind hand-knotted rugs from around the world, including Nepal, India and Pakistan, and takes pride in having one of the most beautiful rug collections in the country. Thanks to Pourvakil’s keen eye, it’s also one of the best places to source high-quality modern rugs. “I’m happy to share my passion for rugs,” he says. “I guess you could say it is my life’s calling.”

ELEGANT ESCAPES

With the holidays nearly upon us, vineyards offer an intimate and magical place to host private events.

As the temperatures cool down, our social calendars have a way of heating up. We caught up with Angela Marotta and Melissa Marotta-Paolicelli, the dynamicsister duo and co-proprietors of Two Sisters Vineyards, to get the details on how to host a private event at their estate.

Living Luxe (LL): What is the vineyard like during the cooler seasons? Does it still work for hosting?

Two Sisters Vineyards (TSV): Two Sisters Vineyards is an incredible venue all year round. Each season brings its own unique charm and atmosphere. In the fall, the vineyard is at the peak of its seasonal beauty. The cooler temperatures are ideal for experiences on our heated Veranda, like wine tastings, sparkling receptions and corporate team building. During the winter, the serene beauty of the estate lends itself to intimate events: holiday parties, weddings and corporate gatherings. The Barrel Room offers a stunning and sophisticated environment, perfect for private and corporate events. The vineyard adapts beautifully to the changing seasons, with each one offering its own distinct experience.

LL: With all the event spaces out there, hosting can be overwhelming. What should people look for when choosing a venue?

TSV: When selecting a private event space, there are several factors to consider. First, the quality of food and drink is often a highlight of any event. At Two Sisters, you’ll enjoy exceptional cuisine from our on-site restaurant, Kitchen76, paired with our award-winning wines. Second, make sure the space can comfortably accommodate your guest list while allowing for the flow of activities. Kitchen76 can host up to 100 guests, while our Barrel Room is reserved for groups of 20 to 60 people. Our seasonal Pond Pergola and Veranda can each hold up to 60 guests. Finally, you want to consider event support and services—it’s often overlooked but it can make or break the event! At Two Sisters, our events team ensures every detail is taken care of, from decor to dining.

LL: What are some other ways people can host private events at Two Sisters?

TSV: Hosting a private event at Two Sisters can include a personalized wine tour, where guests are taken through the vineyard and winery. At our private dinners, guests enjoy a curated menu in the Barrel Room or Kitchen76, paired with our award-winning wines. The vineyard is also an ideal venue for corporate events, and we offer a range of activities that can be tailored to fit the goals of each team. We also offer beautiful seasonal celebrations, such as holiday-focused dinners.

LL: A private wine tasting sounds magical! What can visitors expect from doing one at Two Sisters?

TSV: They can expect a refined and personalized experience. The private tastings are led by our estate sommelier or wine consultant, who will guide them through the winemaking process and a curated selection of Two Sisters’ award-winning wines, and explain the history of the vineyard. It’s both educational and enjoyable! Plus, the tasting can be customized to suit the preferences and interests of the guests.

POLISHED PERFECTION

At the Floorence Tile & Slab showroom, founders Ali and Sareh Khalilzadeh use virtual reality technology to change the way we shop for tiles. The duo shares what sets them apart, the latest trends in tiling and how to use VR for your next project.

“WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT IMPORTING THE MOST ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE TILE AND SLAB COLLECTIONS.”

For Floorence Tile & Slab owners Ali and Sareh Khalilzadeh, design is in their DNA. Born into families of designers and architects, the husband-and-wife team says it was a natural choice for them to open a tile showroom. “We are passionate about importing the most original and unique tile and slab collections,” Ali says. Filled with products imported from Italy and Spain, the exquisite 8,000-squarefoot showroom, located in the heart of Toronto’s design district, offers a large selection of high-end, luxurious porcelain and ceramic tiles and slabs in a range of sizes, with more than 1,000 designs

from more than 30 of Europe’s most beloved brands. Adorning the showroom walls and floors, the tiles are showcased in stylish displays, offering design inspiration for shoppers. Catering to a wide range of needs, from a hotel lobby to an ensuite bathroom, Floorence covers it all.

Ali and Sareh, who have been in business for 20 years with five at the current location, are well-versed in the merits of porcelain slabs, which are particularly popular at Floorence. Not familiar with the material? Here’s why it’s so well loved: “Porcelain slabs,

Condominiums nestled amongst the most prestigious neighbourhoods, with direct access to the York Mills subway station, and minutes to downtown Toronto and North York, from the mid $600,000s*.

unlike natural stone, require no maintenance and are heat-resistant, scratch-resistant and chemical-resistant, which makes porcelain the ideal choice for kitchen countertops,” Ali says. It’s good news for anyone who enjoys a glass of red wine with dinner, as any spills may be easily wiped away, leaving no stain or residue on the countertop—with all the conflict that’s bound to eliminate, maybe we should add “divorce-resistant” to the list of porcelain’s virtues. Thanks to their versatility, such neutral colours as white, grey, beige and greige continue to trend. “However, porcelain in an onyx look, in the colours of white, pink, blue and black, are becoming more popular and especially those with the cloudy veining,” Ali says.

For those who can’t make it to the showroom in person, Floorence’s virtual reality technology sets the scene for a fully immersive design experience. The technology’s seamless interface allows users to explore the showroom’s extensive range of tiles in great detail as if they were there in person. “The virtual reality experience really allows you to see your design come alive,” Ali explains.

Begin by selecting a kitchen or bathroom design similar to your own, then choose the slab or tiles you wish to use. The technology will instantly generate a 3D rendering of the space, which you can then explore from various angles in a virtual walk-through. Should you want to try a contrasting tile on your island or nearby fireplace surround, you may change them individually to see their combined effect. Tile finishes may also be switched from shiny to matte, and you can view the space in both daytime and nighttime lighting. Perfect for architects, designers and homeowners alike, the VR technology allows customers to experiment with bold choices to

see how tiles look on a larger scale so they can get exactly what they want with no surprises on installation day. For Ali and Sareh, creating better designs and happier customers is what Floorence Tile & Slab is all about.

RIISE AND GRIND

For coffee enthusiasts wanting to take their brews to the next level, JURA’s new J8 twin allows for a completely customizable cup of joe.

At home, Chris Papastathopoulos starts the day by making his wife, Vesna, her morning cappuccino. She likes her coffee robust, so he programs the JURA J8 twin to dispense a dark blend containing a high ratio of robusta beans. Then he sets the grinder to its highest strength to yield a fine coffee powder, ensuring a really bold espresso. And because Vesna doesn’t like too much milk in her cappuccino, he programs the J8 twin to froth less milk.

Papastathopoulos prefers a different cup of coffee, something more mellow. For his, he sets the J8 twin to grind a 50-50 blend of arabica and robusta beans at mid-level to yield a coarser coffee powder for a lighter and less bold cup of coffee. “I like extra milk froth, so I’ll program the machine to reflect that, too,” he says.

“The perfect way to start the day.”

“ YOU CAN EXTRACT ONE BLEND FOR YOUR MORNING CAPPUCCINO AND AN ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT ONE FOR YOUR AFTERNOON ESPRESSO.“

Papastathopoulos is the JURA National Sales Manager for Faema Canada and a big proponent of JURA’s new espresso machine, the J8 twin. With two precision grinders and two separate bean containers, it’s already making its mark with coffee aficionados looking to experiment with various blends and customize their coffee.

“It’s a phenomenal machine,” Papastathopoulos says. “You can pinpoint and create your own proprietary blend of coffee by keeping dark roast coffee beans in one container and lighter roast beans in the other and programming the machine to mix the blend you like, extracting a cup of coffee that is perfect for you.”

Created by JURA, a Swiss brand that has been innovating quality coffee appliances since the 1930s, the J8 twin is a smaller, more compact

version of the wildly popular GIGA 10, a premium coffee machine with two separate grinders and bean containers, launched last year. Measuring just 12.2 inches wide by 14.2 inches high by 17.6 inches deep, the J8 twin is a two-grinder machine that’s ideal for kitchens where space is tight.

“IT’S A FANTASTIC MACHINE THAT CAN CATER TO EVERYONE’S NEEDS, RIGHT FROM THE GET-GO.”

Also recently launched by JURA is the revamped E8, a global bestseller, upgraded with the Professional Aroma Grinder 2, a 3.5-inch push-button display with large symbols, and 17 different coffee classics and specialties at the touch of a button. Incredibly simple to use, the new E8 combines delicious coffee results with sleek modern design.

flavoured syrup, serving up an

Beyond customizing the blending process, the J8 twin also allows users to adjust the coffee grind fineness prior to making their beverage so the cup is perfect from the first second of production. It can be programmed to create individual profiles with specific recipes for multiple coffee drinkers in the house. And the exciting Sweet Foam function provides the option to delicately infuse the milk foam with a flavoured syrup, serving up an entirely new world of taste.

The J8 twin comes in elegant Diamond Black, with a highdefinition 6.7-inch Panorama Coffee Panel touchscreen that displays all the machine’s functions and beverage selections. It also prompts you when any care and maintenance, like a filter change or a milk system clean, is required. “It’s a fantastic machine that can cater to everyone’s needs, right from the get-go,” Papastathopoulos says. “You can extract one blend for your morning cappuccino and an altogether different one for your afternoon espresso.”

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

In a city that experienced nearly 4,000 residential break-ins last year, Toronto’s Chateau Window & Door Systems takes home security very seriously. We caught up with Chateau president Edgar Sigal to get the details on how to keep your home safe without sacrificing style.

Living Luxe (LL): When we think of maximizing security, we think of windowless rooms. How can you ensure your home stays secure without sacrificing natural light?

Edgar Sigal (ES): Natural light is certainly a key reason we have windows in homes—it is fundamental to our well-being and connects us with our environment. Being secure does not mean sacrificing any of that. At Chateau Window & Door Systems, we offer a few different options that improve the security of our products. The most effective way is to use laminated glass as part of the window fabrication, which utilizes a sandwich of glass to increase resistance to forced entry.

LL: A study found that 55 per cent of home invasions happened through a door. How can we make our doors more secure?

ES: At Chateau, we have always recommended doors with multipoint locks. They have a number of lock points between the door and frame, which makes it more difficult to kick in or pry off. In fact, we have a few clients with these lock mechanisms who have had attempted break-ins, and the perpetrator could not gain access and moved on. On this note, we are excited to have just introduced a new door product into our lineup that offers higher security. These high-security doors can be used internally for safe rooms and for exterior applications.

LL: Who should consider adding alarms to their homes? What is the installation process like?

ES: I believe everyone should have an alarm system on their homes as a basic element. At a minimum, a good alarm system will identify if you have left a window open prior to leaving the house. At Chateau, we are always cognizant of alarm requirements as we deal with both replacement and new construction. We offer integrated alarm contacts in our premium products so that the security company doesn’t need to drill into a window or door and compromise its operation.

LL: What do you wish more people knew about securing their homes?

ES: I think home security is a very personal thing, and there are different levels that each of us needs to feel secure. But we have also seen a rise in brute-force break-ins in Toronto, and I believe that we need to be more vigilant. I want people to know that it is not complicated to improve security, and we are happy to assist. At Chateau, security has always been a high priority and we’re always looking at new technologies and systems to offer the best solutions. We take a consultative approach with our clients to capture their specific requirements so we can ensure we cater to their varying needs.

PROSPEROUS VIBES IN THE HOME OFFICE

How to apply the tenets of the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui in your home office to attract wealth and success.

The home office has been transformed from a sporadically used room to a key space in our work lives. We spend a lot of time there, sometimes more than eight hours a day. So it’s important to set up your office to attract career success and wealth. Feng shui can help.

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of arranging spaces— both indoors and out—in a way that fosters the smooth flow of energy, to create harmony and well-being for the inhabitants. According to

feng shui principles, each person has a kua (pronounced gua), or life number, that corresponds to his or her birth date. This kua number dictates the person’s four favourable and four harmful directions. Each direction has a meaning. The first and most important direction is your success or sheng qi direction. This is the direction that assists you in obtaining wealth, be it financial or via assistance from others. When possible, you should always sit in your home office facing your wealth direction. If this is not

“FENG SHUI IS THE ANCIENT CHINESE PRACTICE OF ARRANGING SPACES—
BOTH INDOORS AND OUT—IN A WAY THAT FOSTERS THE SMOOTH FLOW OF ENERGY, TO CREATE HARMONY AND WELL-BEING FOR THE INHABITANTS.”

possible in your current space, sit facing one of your other three favourable directions.

There are also a few other things that you can do to increase your chances of success that don’t involve your kua number. Always place your desk in the command position, with a solid wall behind you and a clear view of the door and any windows. If there are two people sharing the office, they may sit facing each other with each person’s back to a wall and a clear view of the door and the window.

The best-case scenario is that each person faces one of their favourable directions. Never sit with your back to the door or with your back to a window. And don’t position your desk directly facing the door, in its so-called “energy corridor,” as this leads to instability.

The items that you use to decorate your home office are also important. What you surround yourself with has an impact on your psyche. My feng shui master always said that beautiful objects emit favourable energy. So, do not have artwork depicting death

or other negative scenes. Having guns and swords in your office is also considered negative even if they are decorative. Select items and artwork that are uplifting or frame some photos taken during one of a vacation. If you have a mentor whom you wish to emulate, you may place a photo of this person on the wall in front of you or on your desk to remind you of your goals. If you have diplomas or awards, they should also be displayed. This will give you a sense of achievement and confidence.

Having a tall plant in your office is also considered favourable. You may place the plant in the south or southeast direction. If this is impossible, you may place the plant in the far right corner of your office, which you face when entering the room. Do not have cacti, as their spikes are considered to be like poison arrows. Tall leafy plants are best. Do not place a water feature, such as a fountain, in your office unless you’ve had a consultation with a professional. Water can generate wealth but it can also take it away if it’s improperly placed.

Finally, you may want to consider getting some crystals—a nice chunk of citrine or good-quality tiger’s eye—to be used as a paperweight on your desk. These stones are considered to be good for assisting with money matters. Put a picture of the person or the company you want a contract with, or place the bid that you wish to win under your chosen stone, and let the magic begin.

A NEW VEIN

Prized for millennia by connoisseurs—from emperors to artists—marble is having a renaissance in our homes. The pros at Better Marble have mastered the art of providing the very best of both classic and on-trend marble masterpieces.

Marble and its look-alikes remain a hot trend for those wanting to make a grand statement in their spaces, and a passion for this richly veined noble material is the lifeblood of Better Marble, a North York company that offers clients hand-selected stone surfaces from around the world. A passion for marble is also what prompted Jason Marticho to leave a career as an airline pilot and sign on to the family business as Better Marble’s account manager. “The name sums up what we do: offer very good quality marble at a very good price,” he says. “It also reflects our commitment to exceed, to always provide better products and service.”

“LIKE FINE WORKS OF ART, EVERY SLAB IS DIFFERENT, EACH CAPABLE OF MAKING A UNIQUE DESIGN STATEMENT. WE WELCOME THE CHANCE TO HELP YOU FIND THE PERFECT ONE.”

Better Marble’s clients (mostly interior designers, architects, contractors and fabricators, but also the occasional homeowner) come for not only superior stone products but also excellent customer service—as a family-owned business, the company strives to make clients feel like part of the clan.

Besides marble, the 22,000-square-foot showroom features exquisite examples of quartzite and granite, plus the newest

technology and innovation of manmade quartz and porcelain. Each of the thousands of slabs has been painstakingly selected by Marticho or his father, Eli Marticho, who founded the company in 2020 and serves as COO. The elder partner brings more than 25 years of expertise gained through working in many aspects of the industry, including quarrying marble in Italy, and exporting between Europe and Middle Eastern countries. “You could say marble is in my veins,” says his son with a laugh.

The pair now mine an extensive network to keep on top of the latest industry trends and developments. Because natural stone is best selected in person, they travel the world to source the highestquality products, with frequent forays to Europe. The soaring popularity of prized natural stone quartzite has put Brazil, where it’s mined, on the itinerary. The result: Better Marble has a vast selection of quartzite, with more than 1,000 slabs to choose from. No two are exactly alike—some slabs emulate marble or precious onyx and others cut a unique and striking contemporary look.

With its timeless appeal, natural marble remains the most sought-after stone here. Topping the A-list is high-end calacatta marble, originating in Tuscany and distinguished by its incomparable veining. But, of course, with such a vast inventory, there is no shortage of other marble options to choose from in the showroom, from sedate and classic to dramatic and fashionforward. “I’m struck by the inventive ways marble is used today,” Marticho says. “We’ve helped clients find the ideal stone to apply to ceilings or on furniture frames and television surrounds. The possibilities for reinvention are endless.”

There is also an impressive collection of manmade stone surfaces at Better Marble. Whether the stone is real or faux, the duo behind the curated selection have seen firsthand how finding the perfect stone can turn a project from ordinary to exceptional. “Like fine works of art, every slab is different, each

capable of making a unique design statement,” Marticho says. “We welcome the chance to help you find the perfect one.”

AN EVENT TO REMEMBER

Michelle Mawby and Geoffrey Lackner opened their Prince Edward County farmhouse to the JennAir brand and the design community.

In June, interior designer Michelle Mawby and cinematographer Geoffrey Lackner, alongside JennAir® Luxury Appliances, MARLABAKER.ca and Diana Pires Events, hosted an unforgettable event in their newly renovated century-old farmhouse. They welcomed guests for a day of innovation, design and natural beauty on their 12 acres of farmland in Prince Edward County. Designers enjoyed farmhouse tours, horticultural workshops led by Carson Arthur and an outdoor dining experience by Cultura TIEMPO. Central to the day was the JennAir brand experience, which highlighted the fusion of technology with design and the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in luxury kitchen appliances. This event exemplified the power of connection— designers unwound, exchanged ideas and forged new friendships. Bolstered by MARLABAKER.ca’s dedication to inspiring and elevating the design community, the day in the County was a testament to the creativity and collaboration that define the industry.

AT HOME

TV and radio personality Pooja Handa shares the details of her home design collaboration with Harvey Wise and how she made her house functional for multiple generations.

If you live in the GTA, you probably recognize Pooja Handa’s face. She’s been a news anchor, reporter and TV host for nearly two decades, appearing on CP24, CTV and Global Morning News, covering a wide variety of topics. You might also be able to pick out her voice thanks to The Pooja and Gurdeep Show, which she co-hosts on 98.1 CHFI. The 45-yearold has become a household name thanks to the wit, charm and humour she brings to everything she does.

What you might not know about Handa is that she’s always really, really loved children. She would gravitate towards them, sitting at the kids’ table and playing with them at the park. “I’ve always known in the most guttural way that I was meant to be a mom,” she says. But when it came time to start her own family, it didn’t happen as she’d expected. After seven years, seven rounds of IVF, two rounds of IUI and 11 failed embryo transfers, she was physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. “I think everybody just assumed that, because I had such a big career, I was just this career woman who didn't want kids and that maybe this was a decision that we made. Behind the scenes, I so desperately wanted to have children,” Handa says. “It was really hard. And in what I do, you have to be on. My job is to make people smile in the morning so you have to put your own stuff aside and come to work and do what you’ve got to do.”

It was during this gruelling cycle of doctors’ appointments and letdowns that Handa and her husband, Paul Pathak, purchased a home in Toronto, and what started as a renovation project turned into a full-on tear-down to create their custom dream home in 2018 with the help of long-time friend and designer Harvey Wise, now of Wise Nadel Design.

Amid the countless disappointments, the house ultimately was an embodiment of hope, ready and waiting to be filled with the pitter-patter of small feet whenever and however they came into Handa’s life. “I remember one point when they were a bit exasperated about their journey and I said to them, ‘Trust me on this: you will have children. I don’t know when it will be, but it will be and you need to have hope that it will happen,’” Wise says.

Now, six years, two children and an in-law suite later, the Handa house is filled with family and joy. The 5,000-square-foot midtown home defies trends, instead serving as a sanctuary of timeless elegance that is just as impactful now as it was when

Wise first designed it. “I did not want to pick a look that was just super trendy or modern or contemporary or any of those things,” Handa says. “I just wanted a house that exudes warmth.”

In keeping with her personality, Handa wanted a casual and cool family-oriented vibe that prioritized livability over fussiness. To do this, Wise and Handa opted for warm and woody interiors filled with clean lines, timeless silhouettes and brass finishes. Throughout, works by Canadian artists, including painter Steve Driscoll and photographer Edward Burtynsky, and layers of texture add dimension to the serene muted colour palette, while statement lighting fixtures create design impact and a bespoke feel to each room. “I wanted it to feel like we were in a hotel,” Handa says. “The type of vibes where it just feels warm and modern, but it's not so contemporary that it feels cold. I had a real problem with grey. I kept saying, ‘I don't want a grey house.’”

Nowhere exudes effortless warmth more than the kitchen. Intricate marquetry flooring in a deep-toned wood harmonizes with a mix of white, glass-faced and walnut cabinetry. A stacked-tile backsplash gets a geometric and modern flair with bright white grouting, balancing some of the more traditional elements. Three ribbed globe pendants reminiscent of beehives are suspended over a generous island that conceals extra storage beneath the waterfall marble top.

In the family room, a floor-to-ceiling white-veined grey marble surround makes for an impactful backdrop to the linear fireplace and 80-inch TV (this and an integrated ironing board were Pathak’s two requests for the house). On each side, built-in white bookcases are decorated with books, mementoes and sculptures, while a large white sofa pairs with a chestnut leather chair and a chaise longue, tucked in a window alcove.

The dining and formal sitting rooms are separated by an asymmetrical two-sided linear fireplace with a striking marbleclad chimney column, accented with gold. Above the spacious wood dining table, a glamorous chandelier, made from dozens of hexagonal pieces suspended from golden chains, casts a soft glow over the diners.

Upstairs, the serene primary ensuite is a favourite space for both Wise and Handa. Sitting parallel to each other, two mounted curved floor-to-ceiling mirrors abut Art Deco-inspired vanities. A sumptuous freestanding tub in front of the window wall overlooks the backyard. “The primary bathroom is probably one of the most

spectacular bathrooms we've ever designed,” Wise says. “The floor pattern is beyond amazing and tests the passage of time so beautifully. The vanities are exquisite. I think that bathroom is really ahead of its time in so many ways.”

Wise’s solution for a bit of excess space, an anteroom—a sitting room to use while getting dressed—connects the bathroom and primary bedroom. A pair of modern walnut built-in desks with grid-like open shelves that peek into the bathroom offer a luxurious place to apply makeup or catch up on last-minute work. A huge walk-in closet—a must for Handa—conceals clutter behind leather-like vinyl-clad doors. “The primary ensuite and closet are pretty beyond reproach,” Wise says. “There's a lot of great moments in that house, but I would say to you that that's a real wow.”

In the backyard, a peaceful haven awaits with an inviting pool and in-ground hot tub, an outdoor kitchen and dining area, and a contemporary pergola lounge. Beyond the main two floors, a rec room occupies the basement, and on the third floor, an in-law suite, with a kitchenette, lounge area, bedroom and bathroom, is the newest addition to the home, added a few years after the rest of the house was completed and also designed by Wise. In anticipation of the children to come, Wise designed the home with durability in mind, choosing finishes, flooring and fabrics that could withstand wear and tear without sacrificing style. While Handa and her husband try to strategically contain the inevitable chaos of toddlers in certain areas, the ever-downto-earth Handa admits that “it feels like a daycare sometimes.” And ultimately, it’s that livability that breathes life into the house and makes it a home—a comfortable and relaxed place that doesn’t feel like a museum. “It's really nice to be able to create this feeling of family and warmth and coziness and also personality,” Wise says. He notes that, as good design becomes more accessible, parents and designers are putting more care into the way their homes work for their kids. “It is important today that you're thoughtful about the environment your kids are in on any level. Whether it's about how it's designed or how it flows or how it functions for them, we think through that.”

For Handa, there’s something special about a house that holds a lifetime of memories, through highs and lows. “I'm never moving. I'm staying here forever,” she says. “I think having a home where you have so many memories that you're making in it, that's really my

hope for [my kids]. It’s that we, together, make the best memories.”

Though Handa now has her happy ending in her dream home, it’s become more important than ever to her to advocate for those still in the throes of infertility. “I realized that I have this huge platform, and if I don't start being part of normalizing these conversations, then I'm not helping move them forward,” she says. “I knew from being in waiting rooms at fertility clinics for seven years that I was not alone, and yet I felt so alone.”

Now, Handa openly discusses her journey with her tens of thousands of followers on social media. She works closely with and is on the advisory committee of the Modern Miracle Foundation, an organization that provides grants for fertility treatments. “I was in a position where I could exhaust all options, including surrogacy, but not everybody has that, so I felt like it was incumbent upon me to start talking about it so I could make it easier for the next person.” Handa’s kids—a boy and a girl now two years old, referred to as twiblings—were born through two surrogates a few months apart.

Wise laid the groundwork for this next chapter of Handa’s life in more ways than one. Beyond designing the home that will be the backdrop for the family for years to come, he introduced Handa and Pathak to the surrogate who carried their daughter, the same woman who birthed Wise’s daughter when he and his husband were going through the process several years prior. “It means so much to me,” Handa says. “It's one of those things where I'll never be able to thank him enough.”

Now Handa and Wise share a bond, which transcends one label but is rooted in a mutual respect that is evident in talking to them both. “We have such a great relationship that I just trust him implicitly with almost everything because I just love his design aesthetic,” Handa says. “His vision is usually my vision.” It’s probably this shared taste that gave the house they designed together such a beautiful sense of harmony.

Nowadays, if you stop by the Handa house, there’s a good chance there will already be company there. “It is filled with people all the time,” she says. “My house is like Grand Central Station nonstop. We always have somebody here. I love that our house has become that house. I hope we're going to be the hang house in the future with the kids.”

I’ve always known in the most guttural way that I was meant to be a mom.

Falling for LUXURY ULTIMATE

Internationally acclaimed designer Lori Morris shares the secrets of creating her signature looks: opulent spaces that are both on-trend and eternally elegant.

Susan Kelly Photography by Edward James

As days grow shorter, many designers advise countering with a lighter colour scheme. But rather than “rage against the dying of the light,” one of the world’s most sought-after designers encourages embracing the dark side. “I’ve built my career on breaking rules,” notes the audacious and vivacious Lori Morris. “I think both of the homes shown here that I’ve designed illustrate how a dark colour palette can be sumptuously warm and inviting, even romantic, after I add the sexiness and panache I feel every room should have.”

And what a magnificent career it has been for the master designer, artist and free-spiritat-heart. Since establishing the House of Lori Morris Design (LMD) in 1987, she has remained true to her eclectic and unique vision, gaining recognition as one of the Andrew Martin: Interior Design Review ’s World’s Top 100 Designers. To that, Morris adds a slew of awards, including a recent INT Interior Design Award for best interior design for a private residence in Canada—the winning LMD-designed project, some of which is highlighted here, was a five-bedroom Toronto home.

Nicknamed Palace Deluxe, its design oozes her signature bespoke luxury, with an aura of Old-World timeless sophistication and rock-star élan. The library in particular is a favourite of hers. “The client wanted a very warm, authentic, classic English style with a soupçon of French flair,” Morris says. “It’s also deliciously elegant and romantic at the same time.” Against lavishly

walnut-panelled walls, the designer employed a deep and moody colour palette, rich shades of chocolate, navy blue and olive green, punctuated with burnished golds. It’s a chic and cozy autumnal look that invites curling up before a roaring fire on the contemporary-meets-classic forest green velvet Lion Sofa from the Lori Morris furniture collection.

As in fashion, layering is what adds design interest and personality to decor, Morris feels. And it goes far beyond simply adding extra throws in cozy textiles. In the home’s primary bedroom, for instance, layers are many and lavish. Cognac-coloured lamps gleam on exquisite vintage Italian end tables, flanking a baronial bed with a faux fur headboard. A sleek tobacco satin quilted duvet is topped with layers upon layers of velvet pillows. “You can’t have too many pillows,” she says. “Some are in animal print, which in my world is a neutral and appears in almost every room I design.” Strategically placed soft burnished metal accents add a subtle sheen.

Fall is the time of the autumn equinox, when light and dark are in perfect balance. And a home need not be completely dark and moody or all light and airy, this designer feels. She combined both approaches in the other stunning project shown here: a grand foyer, which she inventively turned into a luxe loungelike space distinguished by dramatic high-gloss black walls. “It forms a segue to the grand, allwhite, light-filled central staircase beyond,” she

says. “So it's a balance of the light and the dark which creates the design impact.”

The walls have inset panels covered with white exquisitely etched wallpaper. Underfoot, there are ultra-chic white marble floors with silver inlays. A sumptuous chaise covered with black-striated-with-silver velvet claims pride of place, topped with lushly decadent fur and wool throw pillows for textural interest. A rock crystal sculpture and drinks table add sparkling glass touches, as do mirrored cabinets with beautiful silver hardware.

For an element of surprise, Morris likes to inject unexpected accents of vibrant colour. It’s the perfect way to add light relief while complementing the overall moody scheme.

Here, bright ultramarine makes a dramatic appearance on the tuxedo-style chair upholstery, lamps and other accessories. It is also featured in artwork, such as the quirky sculpture of a spaceman riding a horse. Many clients admire the clear turquoise-blue Lori Morris Wilhelmina cabinet in a half-moon shape, with a finishing flourish of Swarovski crystal-encrusted floral hardware.

“When I design, it’s more about what the client resonates with than being in harmony with a season,” Morris says. “Moody colour schemes are having a moment now, but I find a jewel-tone colour palette has universal appeal and is timelessly elegant, especially when combined with rich woods and other noble materials. It’s the original way we at House of LMD combine them that adds the excitement.”

UPSCALE KEEPING APPEARANCES

This architecturally impeccable Vaughan estate resembles a resort but has everything needed to enjoy family life.

By Susan Kelly

Architecturally aspirational homes can seem so picture-perfect that it’s difficult to imagine living in them. Such is not the case with this homey, contemporary two-storey property in Vaughan.

“This is not the first magazine spread to highlight the house’s architecture by renowned Richard Librach and stunning interiors designed by Tara Fingold,” says listing agent Justin Cohen, vice president at Cohen Homes and Estates in Toronto. “The genius of their design is that it is also a very warm and welcoming family home.”

Often in the media, Tara Fingold Interiors has designed awardwinning spaces across North America for more than 25 years, reflecting a deft ability to create sophisticated yet liveable high-end spaces, while Librach is one of Toronto’s leading residential architects. A selfproclaimed “architectural philosopher moonlighting as a rock-androll legend,” he is recognized for his design brilliance and sleek and impactful contemporary approach. Librach’s early career was spent at a hip architecture firm in Miami, which might account for a prime feature of this manse at 151 Centre Street. “It’s all Miami luxury in the backyard,” Cohen notes. “You feel like you’re in South Beach.”

The pristine grounds offer a hotel-like oasis with a saltwater pool, hot tub, cabana and multiple seating areas—it’s the ideal retreat for both relaxing and entertaining. From the front, however, the agent reckons it’s more about Muskoka charm. The gated entrance, obscured by lush greenery, leads into a grand driveway lined with lanterns. As the wellset-back house comes into view, visitors are greeted by a natural stone façade accented with Indiana limestone and wood elements. The front entrance is topped with a dramatic and imposing cantilevered overhang with a walnut-grooved ceiling. The effect is not unlike pulling up to a resort. The same grooved walnut detail continues on the ceiling of the front foyer. The sunken grand entranceway stays free of clutter, thanks to a walk-in closet by the door that can accommodate plenty of coats and boots. Another full mudroom is found at the side of the house.

Inside, more than 11,000 square feet of airy, open-concept living space beckons. Guests immediately glimpse one of the home’s focal features that gives a nod to legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, renowned for integrating natural elements into contemporary architecture. “There are impressive ceiling heights everywhere, which are made even more dramatic

with the grey granite wall that extends from the basement all the way to the second floor,” says Cohen.

Across wide-plank hardwood floors that span the main floor, the open-concept principal living spaces await. The gourmet kitchen blends function and style with full-height dark-stained wood cabinetry and integrated Miele appliances. Two pantries— one a butler’s, the other hidden behind a secret door, a fun touch for both children and adults—offer ample food storage.

One bedroom is located on the main floor. With backyard access and a three-piece ensuite, it might serve as a home office or in-law suite. Of the home’s six bedrooms, the remaining luxuriously appointed sleeping quarters are found on the second floor, accessible via elevator, and they enjoy access to a dramatic atrium. The primary suite is a sunlit sanctuary, spacious enough to include a cozy seating area in front of the linear fireplace next to the wide windows. A covetable massive walkin closet includes a centre island. With all the amenities of a five-star resort spa, the primary bathroom features two vanities, a large double walk-in shower and a soaker tub overlooking the wooded front yard.

Contemporary and elegant, the home was designed to function for a large family with

four children. The designers equipped the basement level with everything for an entertainment haven, perfect for kids and the young at heart. Awaiting downstairs is a fully appointed games room, carpeted movie theatre and full gym, plus a second kitchen for snack time and an additional guest suite. Modern, stylish and replete with smart-home features, 151 Centre Street is listed for $11.795 million. “This amazing property has enough resortworthy features for anyone to enjoy an exceptional lifestyle,” says Cohen. “And with possibilities for multigenerational living, it will also make a perfect family home.”

As Tapestry Decor celebrates 20 years, owner Rosalia Fazzari reveals a recent kitchen renovation project and shares the secrets to her success.

By Susan Kelly Photography by Shoot 1Space

When the owner of this sublimely stylish home in the Pine Valley area of Woodbridge approached designer Rosalia Fazzari to revamp her kitchen, it was a testament to their enduring professional relationship. After all, the founder of Tapestry Decor had designed the first elegant iteration of the space. “I was delighted,” Fazzari says. “This is the third home I've worked on for her over the past 20 years. It had been 15 years since I designed the previous kitchen along with the rest of the interior, and I completely embraced her desire for a refresh.”

This Pine Valley homeowner is just one of many long-time clients who have returned to Fazzari over the years, drawn by her comprehensive approach to design and project management. “I’ve personally overseen every home build and renovation, ensuring each project runs seamlessly from start to finish,” Fazzari says. “From the initial concept to the final details, I manage every aspect of the process.” Since founding Tapestry Decor 20 years ago, Fazzari has been transforming homes from the ground up, offering services that span from initial construction and total remodelling to interior design and project management. Based in Woodbridge, Tapestry Decor is a luxury design studio for clients seeking personalized, full-service solutions.

“I chose the name because a tapestry itself has many materials and colours, along with weaves and prints,” she says. “I think Tapestry Decor reflects not only the diverse people who come for my services but also the many different styles and textures that must be orchestrated to realize their design visions.”

"WE’VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF TRANSFORMING COUNTLESS HOMES AND SPACES WITH OUR PASSION FOR DESIGN AND RENOVATION.
EACH PROJECT IS A TESTAMENT TO THE TRUST OUR CLIENTS PLACE IN US AND THE INCREDIBLE TEAM OF TALENTED TRADESPEOPLE WE'VE BUILT OVER THE YEARS.”

Over the past two decades, demand for Fazzari’s multifaceted expertise has soared, and her impressive project portfolio encompasses styles from classic to transitional to contemporary. She takes joy in personalizing each project by deeply understanding her clients and capturing the essence of their visions. Whether managing a large-scale renovation or selecting the perfect accessory, Fazzari brings the same infectious enthusiasm to every endeavour. “We’ve had the privilege of transforming countless homes and spaces with our passion for design and renovation,” she says. “Each project is a testament to the trust our clients place in us and the incredible team of talented tradespeople we've built over the years.”

For this renovation, the owner wanted to update the previous rather formal kitchen to be more on-trend yet still in harmony with the home’s overall serenely elegant and timeless transitional style. And the homeowner’s lifestyle had changed. Now an empty nester, she wanted something that would work for her and her husband and feel like a hug to the kids and grandchildren when they came to visit. Upgrading to more luxurious custom cabinetry and state-of-the-art appliances was a must.

Fazzari took a cue from the walnut flooring found in the areas surrounding the kitchen, framing the entire space with the same richly toned wood to create continuity. The crisp lines add both Midcentury modern flair and textural interest to the overall transitional style. Walnut was also used to create one of the kitchen’s most striking and original features: a custom glass-panelled modern riff on a classic china cabinet. Rather than gathering dust on open shelving or hiding in a butler’s pantry, the homeowner’s fine crystal, serving platters and the like are proudly displayed.

One element repeated from the original design was the use of sumptuous and exotic natural quartzite with a leathered finish. Now a popular and prized luxury material, natural leathered quartzite was new on the market 15 years ago. “Back then, the homeowner was skeptical,” the designer recalls. “I was so excited to see this gorgeous material leathered that through my excitement she decided to take the chance. I told her she would love it—and she still does!” This time, in a warm beige colour, the material adorns the countertops, backsplash, and centre island, providing an eye-catching backdrop for the custom-feature glass cabinet.

To incorporate one of the hottest current kitchen trends, Fazzari used sleek walnut fluting to great effect on the sides of the island, then echoed the ribbing on the nearby range hood and some cabinets, this time in a matching white. To further bring the kitchen into the present day, she looked to the curved-furniture craze. “I added curved shapes to both the island and the range hood to soften the look while making a strong statement that, because it’s also classic, will stand the test of time,” she says. Brushed gold accents add discreet impact—a band of it graces the range hood, and both the island sink and farmer’s sink under the window are rendered in gold, with matching faucets.

Because it’s open to the kitchen, the adjacent family room also received a refresh, starting with a fresh coat of creamy white paint. The linear fireplace that houses the television was framed in walnut and faced with a beige porcelain slab to echo the kitchen’s decor. Underfoot, the designer placed a lush area rug in a contemporary pattern of cream, grey and brown. A new custom-made sofa with coordinating chairs and ottomans completes the look.

Fazzari says this home illustrates her philosophy that a well-designed space should be both timeless and distinctive. “This kitchen is unique and luxurious but also is very functional and livable,” she says. “And most importantly, it reflects the homeowner and is a welcoming space she is proud of.”

The design team at Stamp & Hammer brings all the sumptuous chic of a European boutique hotel to a residence on the shore of Lake Ontario. Here’s how they did it.

Moody decor schemes are having a moment, and in a showstopping four-bedroom lake house in the Clarkson area of Mississauga, a dark colour palette is employed with elegant effect. But being trendy was not the designers’ main motivation. “We design houses for people, not trends, while curating a tailored experience for them,”

says Berit Bech, co-head of Stamp & Hammer, a bespoke architectural design studio based in Newmarket. “This home is a perfect fit for the homeowners, a couple of successful entrepreneurs whose glamorous, lavish lifestyle includes a passion for world travel.”

WE DESIGN HOUSES FOR PEOPLE, NOT TRENDS, WHILE CURATING A TAILORED EXPERIENCE FOR THEM.

Bech shares co-principal designer status with business partner Mitch Sauder. The duo, along with the youthful, dynamic team they lead, designed both the interior and exterior of the new-build project. “The homeowners had big dreams,” Sauder says. “Since they wanted something unique, this home stands out with its distinctive, angular, and edgy exterior architecture.” Fitting a long wish list into a relatively

small lot did pose a challenge, he admits. But in the end, the team delivered a home with 3,730 square feet of sleekly sophisticated living space, including a finished basement.

To make the most of the prime lakeside location, the designers put the main floor living area and primary bedroom on the second floor, tucking three more bedrooms on the

lower level. Huge, black-framed floor-grazing windows grace upper-level rooms, flooding them with light and opening onto a wraparound balcony. “We installed glass railings so there’s nothing to block the spectacular views of the lake and distant cityscape and did the same on the resort-worthy rooftop patio that has plenty of room for cocktails around the firepit,” Sauder notes.

Inside, it’s all about sophisticated, moody drama. Ebonyhued marble with striking white veining sourced in Portugal makes a sumptuously impactful statement in the kitchen, living areas and primary suite. To soften the look, wall paint and upholstery are in creamy neutral tones, and rich wood millwork and wide-plank hardwood flooring add an earthy, grounding element. “By orchestrating the different textures and materials to complement one another, the home appears both cozy and spacious at the same time,” Bech says. For a finishing flourish, custom furniture was commissioned in curved shapes to add an organic feel. Chandeliers and other

accessories go unapologetically bold and glam in gleaming crystal and burnished gold.

Space for entertaining was a must-have and inspired the designers to create a unique feature: a swank cigar lounge in the basement. The homeowner can invite friends for a smoke and at the same time show off his prized luxury car collection, which includes a Lamborghini, thanks to a glass wall letting into the two-level garage, accessed by a car lift. Advanced systems vent both tobacco smoke and exhaust fumes, part of the technological sophistication that lies behind the house’s cool elegance.

The home beautifully typifies the Stamp & Hammer principals’ commitment to delivering enduring excellence and luxury. “As with every project, we were with them all the way,” Sauder says. “It’s part of our culture of collaboration. In the end, the clients loved it, and that is what is most rewarding for us.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT SOPHISTICATED, MOODY DRAMA.

OLD WORLD Opulence

Everything is designed with hosting in mind at this expanded and updated Roseland gem.

One of the most admired and iconic properties in Burlington’s Roseland neighbourhood is ready to welcome a new family.

“The grandeur, charm and character of this home, with

its impeccably landscaped gardens on a mature-treed double lot, stops people in their tracks,” says David Bakowsky, the co-managing director of The Agency and co-founder of The CB Group. “We don’t anticipate an irreplaceable home like this to last too long on the market.”

Nicknamed Casa Blanca for its eye-catching white exterior, the property at 347 East Hart Crescent is expected to fetch $7.35 million—a record price for Roseland’s off-water area. “This home is designed for entertaining, with multiple areas inside and out—including several wet bar stations— to conveniently serve food and beverages,” says Christina Clavero, comanaging director of The Agency and co-founder of The CB Group.

Photography by Eric Visuals

Current owners Jim and Nikki Lishman honoured the original 1920s character when they expanded the house to almost 7,000 square feet to accommodate their lifestyle. The founders of Turtle Jack’s Muskoka Grill restaurants wanted an oasis where they could readily host family and friends with elegance and ease. “Updating this property has been a labour of love for this family,” Bakowsky says. “After purchasing it in 2015, they undertook a lot of the general contracting over a five-year span to create a home that has all the modern conveniences for hosting people, while retaining the property’s Old-World charm.”

Deriving its name from the rose seedlings planted by Irish immigrants in the 1830s that bloom in the area’s sandy soil, Roseland dates to the 1920s when developer Hughes Cleaver sought to create suburbs inspired by the English garden style. Houses are typically set back from tree-lined boulevards to create expansive front lawns and space for horticultural favourites. At Casa Blanca, the landscaping of the expansive yard is both inviting and sophisticated.

ProScape Land Design expertly enhanced the property by complementing its mature trees with an English-garden-inspired design. They employed a sophisticated green-and-white palette, showcasing hardy hostas with elegant hydrangeas, and introduced vibrant accents of pink impatiens to add seasonal flair. The sleek lines of the saltwater pool are beautifully softened by cascading vines from the

back wall, which drape delicately over the serene waterfalls. A cedar-clad sauna nearby offers an additional touch of luxury, creating a tranquil retreat within this exquisite backyard sanctuary.

Paying tribute to the home’s architectural heritage was important to the owners. The front entrance boasts an impressive portico, a half-moon attic window and a cedar shake roof. Indoors, original brick is exposed in the front living room, while the timeless wooden staircases and marbled tiling elsewhere recall the past with added modern refinement.

To welcome guests, come rain or shine, a newly added breezeway with its own foyer makes it easy to greet company upon their arrival in the driveway. Inside the main living area, four separate patio doors provide the option to step out to the outdoor kitchen, where the barbecues await, or onto the covered patio that has a Southern charm with natural cedarslat ceilings. “The commercial-grade semi-enclosed wet bar was built for outdoor entertaining. An outdoor TV, two beverage fridges, an ice maker and a dishwasher, all tucked behind a glassed roll-up door, make this the perfect summer spot to unwind,” Bakowsky says.

In keeping with the home’s exterior, bright white interiors are punctuated with earthy tones and stone greys. The Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances make the kitchen a food prep haven, with the large counter

areas, full-wall cabinetry and a walk-in pantry supplying loads of space. “The kitchen’s eating area also has a wet bar that provides additional storage and a handy second dishwasher,” Bakowsky adds.

The mindfulness toward convenience carries into the three bedrooms—each with its own ensuite privilege—and the loft, which can easily convert to a fourth bedroom with a powder room.

But one of the home’s most unusual aspects, Clavero says, is the recreational space above the garage. “It’s something we haven’t seen in any other home in the community.” Given the basement’s limited

headroom, the Lishmans opted to use it for storage and instead create a separate space above the garage. Dubbed the Muskoka Room, it features a billiards and games area, reading nook, and a large recreation space with a full wet bar, ready to provide refreshments.

A three-piece bathroom makes this standalone space with its own entrance a great retreat for teens to escape their parents for a while— or vice versa.

“This is easily one of the most recognized and admired homes within Roseland, let alone Burlington,” Bakowsky says. “With so many unique characteristics, it is truly irreplaceable.”
