Bob and LIV have been active in the Evergreen community and Alliance Francaise of Denver for many years, and dedicate important resources to support the arts. New Story New Story is a non-profit organization supported by Sotheby’s International Realty around the world. Recently, at the Sotheby’s International Realty Global Networking Event, Sotheby’s people in attendance raised enough money to build 125 homes—in fact, an entire neighborhood in Mexico. Each home costs $6,500 and transforms dangerous living environments into communities of safe, sustainable homes. LIV was a major participant in that successful effort. Denver Designer Show House For over eight years, LIV Sotheby’s International Realty has served as the presenting sponsor of the Denver Designer Show House, a charitable fundraiser which benefits Children’s Hospital Colorado. A recent endeavor highlighting Alvarez and Morris’ penchant for excellence, and unbiased design, was their involvement in the recent Denver Designer Show House, a home staging (and in 2017, home building) event created to showcase the latest design trends set forth by industry professionals. Alvarez and Morris were the lead designers of the 2017 Denver Designer Show House, an event long-sponsored by LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. The Show House format was new in 2017, in that the home was a new-build, choreographed from the ground up by Alvarez and Morris. Alvarez designed and built the home, then Morris styled the interior of the residence once it was complete. “In a show house, we get to design and build in the way that we think we should,” said Alvarez. “The Show House in Cherry Creek has all the comforts of home, but in a modern setting that supports indoor/outdoor living.” From an interior design standpoint, Morris enjoys working on show homes for the versatility and inspiration they provide. “Show houses let you have full reign of what you want to do,” said Morris. “It’s kind of fun to be your own client. People touring the home often become inspired by designers’ ideas, and leave having gained creative ideas for the design of their own home.” Regardless of the project type Alvarez and Morris work on, the foundation of their business is built on respecting the balance between architecture and interior design. “I think the collaboration of architecture and interior design is very important,” said Morris. “It’s really important that interiors are tactile, and on a human scale. Good design is about how you feel when you are in a space, more than just how something looks on a drawing.” Alvarez and Morris’ dynamic approach to design is what sets them apart in the industry, and what raises the bar for good architecture and interior design in Denver. “In the end, our partnership creates the best end result for our clients, because when we feel strongly about something, neither of us back down,” said Morris. “By working with an interior designer and an architect, who are both striving for the best result in their design, clients get the best of both worlds.” By maintaining a design philosophy that it is ‘O.K. to be different’ when it comes to architecture and interior design, Alvarez and Morris continue to contribute to the evolving design style of Denver, which like the progressiveness of the city these varied styles are thriving in, is likely only going to improve.

We don’t have one look,” said Morris. “As long as design is done well, it is easy to appreciate different styles.”

long-standing recipe for success to improve the economic and social vibrancy of any major metropolis, is to increase the business, cultural and educational opportunities available to its residents. Denver, a relatively new city compared to its coastal counterparts, can be credited with being the home to several organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for its citizens. Today, Denver is leading the nation in regard to the unique business, cultural and educational opportunities that are available to its residents, which continue to position Denver, and the state of Colorado, as one of the best places to live and work in the country. By mirroring the progressive approach to socioeconomic development that the city of Denver has embraced since its infancy, an improved quality of life today, and promise for a better tomorrow, continues for its residents.
A 150-Year-Old Tradition One of the most prominent organizations dedicated to ensuring the economic success of the city of Denver and its residents is the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, an organization that has been paving the way, quite literally, for Denver’s future for the past 150 years. In 1867, the Union Pacific Railroad announced it was choosing to lay track for a new rail spur in Wyoming, instead of Denver, a decision that would stunt, if not eliminate, Denver’s chances of becoming a thriving city. It was the early founders of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, originally established as the Denver Board of Trade, that took action.

“In 1867, the early founders [of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce] saw the devastation that not having a major railway passing through the fledgling city would cause,” said Kelly Brough, President and CEO of the Chamber. “So, the early founders banded together and raised the funds needed to build 100 miles of rail spur on which the Union Pacific Railroad would lay track, paving the way for the future of Denver, and Colorado becoming a thriving economic state. That is the single most important reason why we have been here 150 years.” The focus of the Chamber remains to position the region as an inviting place to live and do business. As such, the organization is often on the front lines when it comes to facing important issues that impact the Denver economy. “We talk about what today’s ‘rail spur’ is,” said Brough. “What are the critical issues that we need to address today that will change the course of our future for decades?” Like the historic recognition of the importance of having a railroad pass through Denver to bring about economic vibrancy, the Chamber currently focuses on six priorities it considers the critical, or ‘rail spur’ issues of today; water, education, transportation, engaging unaffiliated voters, energy, and housing. Today, improvements to Denver’s transportation system remain vital to the city’s development. Similar to the success in bringing the railroad through Denver, the invaluable catalyst that drove the State’s early economic growth, the Chamber continues to meet success in its transit initiatives.

The Chamber’s championing of the construction of Denver International Airport proved a major contribution to the economic success of the city and state of Colorado. “In 1979 Chamber member, Bob Albin, did a study regarding whether it was important to replace Colorado’s first major transportation hub, the Stapleton Airport,” said Brough. The study, completed in 1979, recommended building a new airport by the turn of the century, and in 1995, Denver International Airport opened to travelers. The airport, widely considered one of the region’s smartest economic development investments, now serves more than 54 million passengers a year, making it among the busiest airports in the United States. “Bob’s findings became a huge proponent of why we should replace Stapleton,” said Brough. “Changing the location, size and capacity of our airport was instrumental to Denver and Colorado’s position as a major economic sector. Today, Denver International Airport is a $26B industry annually.” Along with Denver International Airport, the Chamber similarly recognized that making major improvements to the ground transportation system in the city would be vital to compete with those of other major metropolises. When FasTracks, a multi-billion-dollar public transportation expansion plan that includes 122 miles of new commuter rail and light rail, 18 miles of bus transit and 21,000 new parking spaces, was proposed, the Chamber was the first to the table with funds to support the mega ground-transport initiative. “The Chamber supported the FasTracks campaign financially, which instantly made the region more connected and accessible than ever before,” said Brough. “Like the Chamber’s early involvement championing the development of the rail spur, the Chamber’s support of Denver International Airport and
FasTracks have led to exponential economic growth in Denver.” Today, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce consists of a network of 3,000 businesses and their 300,000 employees. The Chamber’s dedication to solving key issues through progressive thinking, just as its founding fathers did by bringing the rail spur to Denver in 1867, has proven to be instrumental to the continuation of Denver’s economic growth.
The Art Of Science And Culture Just as the Denver metro community is collaborative in its business and transportation initiatives, the same can be said for the city’s arts, scientific, and cultural pursuits. One organization dedicated to positioning Denver metro as a hub of world-class culture, is the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), whose primary purpose is to support cultural facilities in the Denver metro area. Founded in 1988, the SCFD supports hundreds of cultural, artistic and scientific attractions including the Denver Art Museum, Denver Botanic Gardens, the Denver Museum of Natural History and the Denver Zoo. The organization has been so successful, Denver metro is now in the national spotlight as a world-class cultural center.

“For a long time, Denver was a city that people drove though when they arrived in Colorado to drive to the mountains,” said SCFD Board Chair, Rob Johnson. “That perception, and the reality, has changed dramatically.” Currently, Denver has the largest performing arts complex theater under one roof in the country, and is increasingly becoming known for its many cultural opportunities. “We are one of the top cultural tax districts in the country.” said Deborah Jordy, SCFD Executive Director. The SCFD model is based on implementing a local sales tax of 1 penny on every $10 sale and use tax metro-wide, which encompasses the seven counties of metro Denver (Adams,

Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson). The SCFD has been reauthorized three times; in 1994, 2004, and most recently in 2016, demonstrating that Colorado residents place a high value on the availability of cultural offerings. “This last election cycle renewal of the SCFD passed at almost two-thirds majority of Denver metro voters,” said Jordy. “Residents of Denver metro truly value the arts, cultural and scientific programs SCFD provides, and part of that success, is that the SCFD provides access for all. Between various organizations ranging from Denver Art Museum to The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, approximately 1,000 free days and free events are made available to a broad range of the general public, ranging from small children to seniors.” The SCFD is so successful, it has become a national model for publicly funded tax districts. “In 1998, the population of metro Denver was 1.8 million and we distributed approximately $13M to SCFD organizations,” said Jordy. “In 2016, we’ve doubled the number of SCFD organizations and have distributed over $56M dollars to them. In almost 30 years, to see the growth and types and breadth of organizations that provide theater and dance and education classes to the population, is unprecedented. We punch way above our weight as a cultural community.” In addition to supplying entertainment for residents, the SCFD exemplifies the notion that the arts have a direct impact on Denver’s economic development. “In 2015 over half a billion dollars in new money was infused into the Denver metro economy through SCFD organizations. $367M of that resulted from cultural tourism,” said Jordy. “This is significant because it demonstrates SCFD art/culture/science organizations alone, are making a major economic impact. Couple the approximately

300 SCFD organizations, with the other sectors of the creative industries; music venues, architecture and design firms— it’s a significant industry cluster. People don’t often think of music organizations and art galleries as economic drivers, but they are. The relationship between these arts are a catalyst for community development, neighborhood development, cultural tourism, and capital improvements.” Adding to the economic impact arts and cultural centers provide, SCFD organizations attribute over 11,000 jobs to the economy annually. “We see all these people moving here, and they need jobs. SCFD is just a small slice of the creative arts industries that are bolstering the economy by offering employment opportunities for new and existing residents.” The robust cultural community fostered by the SCFD improves the overall health and wellbeing of a robust and dynamic quality of life in Denver and Colorado. “Over 14 million people attended cultural, arts or science events in 2015, a significant number in that we have a population of 3.5 million people,” said Jordy. “Repeat visitors, outdoor music festivals, taking a child to a class at the Butterfly Pavilion—these are all activities attributing to the economic success of Denver.”
Unparalleled Education Perhaps the greatest way to ensure the success of a city’s economic, social and cultural future, is to invest in its youth. Today, the Denver metro school district is the largest in Colorado, and recently, has been leading the nation in terms of preparing students to succeed in the highest-demand job sectors in the state. By investing in educational opportunities that will earn Colorado’s educated youth good jobs, the state is developing and retaining a better workforce, while simultaneously taking strides to ensure the state’s long-term

economic success. “We are seeing some distinct trends related to educational opportunities available to students in Colorado,” said Misti Ruthven, Executive Director of Innovation and Pathways for the Colorado Department of Education. “Not only are we seeing an increased opportunity for students to achieve levels of higher education while they are still in high school, there are more opportunities for students to explore career and job opportunities with real businesses [in the State].” Embracing the philosophy that higher education is one pathway to a career, the Colorado Department of Education has embraced a program called, concurrent enrollment, which takes place when a student that is currently enrolled in high school, takes college credits simultaneously. Often, students can graduate with a high-school diploma in one hand and a business credential or an Associate’s degree in the other. “Colorado is leading the nation in terms of students taking college credits while in high school,” said Ruthven. “94% of school districts offer concurrent enrollment. Pretty much anywhere you move in Colorado, there will be some [concurrent enrollment] opportunities available, and we’ve been seeing significant growth in these programs over the past couple years.” Though concurrent enrollment has existed in Colorado since 2008, today, more than 30,000 students, up from only a few hundred the program started with, are currently enrolled across the state.
Parents and students are increasingly supporting and participating in the program, because with school districts helping to fund the initiative while students are still in high school, the cost of earning a college degree is lessened significantly. “We see concurrent enrollment continuing to grow,” said Ruthven. “We’re hearing from students and parents across the state that the earlier students earn college credit, the more options they have; students can earn a Bachelor’s degree faster if they want to go into more college, or, if they want to go straight into the workforce, they’ll already be prepared and positioned to get a good paying job.” In addition to its concurrent enrollment programs, Colorado offers an extensive variety of work-based employment experiences for students. “Work-based learning experiences and apprenticeships are being made available to students within the highest demand business sectors in Colorado,” said Ruthven. “Students are working in marketing, engineering, and finance firms— pre-law, the electrical and technology industry, banking— PICTURED ABOVE, LEFT: Colorado Department of Education building, photo courtesy Colorado Department of Education.
and they are not just serving coffee. They are contributing directly to projects, and they are earning money while they do it. [Students] then are first in line for those high-demand jobs when they graduate with their degree.” Colorado’s unique educational opportunities not only prepare students for the state’s highest paying and most in-demand jobs, but benefit the future of the state economy, by ensuring an educated and lasting workforce. Denver, through its world-class institutions, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and the Colorado Department of Education, continues to set itself apart through its progressive approach to sustained economic growth focusing on business development, arts and culture, and world-class education. This progressive approach results in an improved quality of life for residents of Denver and Colorado as a whole, and augments the State’s reputation as one of the most desirable places to live in the country.
