A Drumbeat of Growth: Denver ranked #22 nationwide, welcoming 35,000 new residents between 2020 and 2023

URBAN RHYTHM

Over the past two decades, Colorado’s Front Range has undergone a striking transformation, quietly reshaping itself to emerge as a hub of cultural vibrancy and urban creativity. This isn’t just a story of population growth; it speaks to reinvention, one where innovation meets the call of the outdoors. Cutting edge sustainability, industry, and Rocky Mountain beauty converge into the ideal environment for work and play. As the Front Range continues to grow and a more diverse audience arrives, those in search of both sophistication and elemental beauty flock to the city centers, places where progress and preservation live in harmony.

With expansion comes evolution within communities, the revitalization of older neighborhoods, and an almost continual urban spread from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins. Some native Coloradans might

appreciate a slowing growth pattern; however, the heartbeat of the region embraces the new. Ready for the opportunity change brings, Colorado is on the national radar for best places to live, time and time again.

Urban living trends over the past 20 years highlight a burgeoning region with rapid growth and evolving priorities. Denver and Boulder lead the way in smart growth and sustainability, while Colorado Springs and Fort Collins navigate the complexities of managing expansion and accessibility. These trends shape the future of the Front Range, influencing everything from infrastructure and housing to community dynamics and quality of life.

Denver is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, with a population growth rate of 1.2 percent between July 2020 and

July 2023, adding 35,000 new residents. There is a continued need for investment in infrastructure and sustainable urban planning. The city’s skyline is spiking dramatically within Five Points—from Welton Street to Brighton Boulevard—to Cherry Creek and the Denver Tech Center (DTC), seeing the addition of eye-catching hotels, high-rise residential buildings, and office spaces reflecting a new era. Since the early 2000s, Denver has added two of the five tallest buildings to its skyline: the Four Seasons Hotel and 1144 Fifteenth, an office building, joined Republic Plaza, Wells Fargo (known as the cash register building to locals), and the office building at 1999 Broadway.

With increasing housing demand, Denver has seen a rise in highdensity housing, including apartment complexes and condominium developments.

Underscoring the city’s fervor for forward thinking, the push toward smart growth is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and promoting walkability. This aligns with broader trends seen across the Front Range.

Colorado Springs has also experienced a surge in development and population growth, offering the challenges of managing rapid expansion while maintaining its unique character. By midyear 2022, population in Colorado Springs reached just over 485,000. Over the last 20 years, the city gained 109,000 people. Over a 10-year span from 2012 to 2022, the number of Colorado Springs residences increased by nearly 30,000 to 212,345. The city has developed a strategic plan that prioritizes what is important to the community, helping the city meet its goals. This

vision for Colorado Springs highlights safety, economic prosperity, inclusivity, and culture, allowing the city’s rich heritage to shine. The Springs, along with Parker, Elizabeth, and areas north of Fort Collins, are among the fastest-growing communities in Colorado, according to the Colorado Municipal League.

You can’t talk about Colorado’s Front Range without mentioning the epicenter of the Flatirons. In 2024, Boulder cemented its reputation as a top draw. According to the Daily Camera, a report released in April showed that Boulder was the number one spot in Colorado for relocations. Visitors and students have become residents at an increasing speed, reflecting Boulder’s appeal for its high quality of life and proximity to outdoor activities. A strong economy and a commitment to the environment means the city’s growth has led not only to an increase in housing developments but also to innovative projects that seek to find a balance between high demand and preservation of its natural beauty, such as drawing down climate pollution, increasing soil health, and creating compost for farms.

Fort Collins is a vibrant college town with a strong community spirit, which has become a focal point for key sectors such as water innovation, clean energy, and bioscience. With the addition of key industries, the city’s housing market is a primary concern for 2024. According to KUNC News, Fort Collins is working to address these growing pains through various strategies, including zoning changes and incentives for affordable housing developments. The city aims to balance its growth with the need to ensure that housing remains accessible for all residents, reflecting a broader trend across the Front Range.

These trends have led to an industrial evolution marked by a dynamic expansion across several key sectors, including technology, bioscience, and health and wellness. The DTC, a prominent tech hub, has attracted numerous companies, including DISH Network, whose corporate headquarters is minutes from the DTC.

Founded in Meridian, Colorado, in 1995 on the premise of bringing TV to rural America, DISH has grown to provide services to approximately 17 million customers. In 2020, the company entered the consumer wireless industry and continues to grow, employing 4,000 people in the Denver metropolitan area.

With additional high-profile tech companies located in the DTC, including Ring Central, Zoom, and Arrow Electronics, former Denver Mayor Michael Hancock gave Colorado the moniker “Silicon Mountain” in 2012.

Since then, it has produced 105 varieties of tea, supported 2.1 million onsite tour visitors, and is responsible for 1.6 billion cups of tea per year.

While the wellness industry thrives in Boulder, the city has also become a known tech hub. “The evolution [of technology] in the 1990s gave those in big cities the opportunity to do their jobs remotely and still be productive via computer. The connection between the university and tech innovations was one of the qualities that drew people to Boulder,” says Tayer.

INDUSTRIAL EVOLUTION

The DTC has some friendly competition from Boulder, which is renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and a robust economy centered on clean energy, aerospace, biosciences, software technology, and health and wellness. “The foundation in entrepreneurship and innovation is central to Boulder’s economy,” said John Tayer, president and CEO of the Boulder Chamber, adding, “Entrepreneurship is supported in Boulder, leading to the development of companies that are now national and international players. To be connected to the research and entrepreneur spirit here is attractive to industry.”

In 2018, Google entered the chat, opening a new 200,000-square-foot, $130 million campus for 800 people, including a fitness center, free massage rooms, and a bouldering wall. Boulder employees pick up free coffee at Rabbit Ears Pass Barista and tuck into free breakfast and lunch at the Altitude Café.

“As an example of Boulder’s development from a startup capital to a technology center, SketchUp was a entrepreneurial tech business started in Boulder. They became a very successful software company that got the attention of Google who bought the company. Google now lands in Boulder, and they decided to stay due to the innovation and lifestyle,” explained Tayer. It is his understanding that the Boulder campus was the number one internal recruiting site for Google. When employees (known as “Googlers”) saw a job opening in Colorado, they wanted to move here.

Boulder is home to three national laboratories—the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)—and to several start-up biotech companies, including Enveda Biosciences, OnKure Therapeutics, and Nova BioLabs.

Tayer added, “In the Biotech sector, innovation happens when companies take compounds being researched at the University of Colorado for additional development, planting the seeds for further manufacturing and bigger companies moving here.”

Denver Film Festival Pioneers: Today, Denver Film reaches more than 100,000 patrons annually through more than 600 screenings

CULTURE RISING

Business is booming, and as the Front Range attracts companies and their employees, that in turn creates a desire for more culture, encouraging the arts to expand and flourish.

In 1978, Denver Film launched to promote film as an art form and a civic forum and was one of the first film festivals in the country at the time. Encouraging a lifelong relationship with film, the organization has established itself as a destination for film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and cultural explorers.

“The Festival environment delivers an elevated experience to our audiences, highlighting entertaining, challenging, and diverse themes within the films, and often extending those conversations outside of the theater and into our community,” says Kevin Smith, CEO of Denver Film.

The annual celebration of international film was seen as a premier Denver event. “Over the decades, we expanded to become a year-round organization and we’re now a part of a film festival circuit that has exploded to encompass about 3,000 annual festivals across the world,” added Smith.

Programming at its flagship home the Sie FilmCenter, the Denver Film Festival, the Film on the Rocks program at Red Rocks Amphitheater, and Spotlight Festivals including CinemaQ, Women+Film, and the Colorado Dragon Boat Film Festival are the cornerstone of Denver Film's mission.

Denver Film’s growth has relied on a team of dedicated staff and volunteers. “An unmatched passion for film has carried our organization for a very long time,” added Smith. “I’m incredibly proud of our ability to bring world-class films to Denver and this region.”

Smith adds, “It’s exciting for us to build and expand a community and an audience for the amazingly talented filmmakers, including a growing number of Colorado filmmakers. That’s a very special feeling. While many filmmakers moved to L.A. or New York to pursue their passion, they’ve started to come back to Colorado to be a part of the film community here.”

As the 47th Denver Film Festival raises its Opening Night curtain, Smith says that there is easily something for everyone in a lineup of more than 180 features, documentaries, and shorts.

Like to eat well? We thought so. Colorado’s foodie star is rising. Five of the state’s restaurants were awarded a Michelin star in the inaugural selection in 2023. An additional star (stars are earned by top restaurants serving the best dishes in the world) was announced in September 2024.

In LoDo, BRUTØ prides itself on authenticity, from grains milled and nixtamalized in-house to using a hearth as the primary cooking appliance. Chef Byron Gomez and his team take a serious approach to their seasonal menu. Located in the Dairy Block’s Free Market, BRUTØ offers guests an intimate experience witnessing each step of the culinary process.

Across town in Sunnyside, diners at The Wolf’s Tailor experience Chef Taylor Stark’s creations, including an inventive multicourse menu that is unique, full of personality, and defies convention by drawing from Nordic, Italian, and East Asian cuisines. The menu rotates throughout the year but focuses on the fermentation process as a common theme. Carefully curated wines, an impressive cocktail menu, and attentive staff add to the engaging atmosphere.

Denver’s newest Michelin-starred restaurant is Alma Fonda Fina, which received a star for exquisite contemporary Mexican cuisine. Located in Denver’s Lower Highland neighborhood, you will find crisped pork belly carnitas tacos and lamb birria, perfectly paired with an avocado margarita. The creation of Chef Johnny Curiel, the eatery pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of Curiel’s hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico.

He explains, “What once felt like a distant dream—sharing my heritage through food—has now become a reality. It’s truly an honor to see the richness of Mexican food being recognized and celebrated. This moment is a triumph not just for our team, but for our entire culture.”
