Crested Butte, the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, is renowned for the flora across its scenic meadows as well as over 750 miles of biking trails and steep and deep ski runs. Grand County’s eponymous Grand Lake is the largest natural body of water in the state, ideal for kayaking, paddle boarding, and boating. Summit County is home to the ski resorts of Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, and Keystone and offers the gorgeous setting of Lake Dillon for sailing and boating surrounded by 26 miles of stunning coastline. Telluride is beloved for its off-the-beaten-path location with challenging ski terrain, a vibrant festival scene, and breathtaking vistas including Bridal Veil Falls, the state’s tallest free-falling waterfall. The Vail Valley boasts phenomenal golf courses including Red Sky Golf Club, the Country Club of the Rockies, and the Clubs at Cordillera’s three championship courses, and 7,399 acres of skiing across the two world-class resorts of Beaver Creek and Vail.

In fact, the high country of Colorado has been a destination for wellness for centuries. Members of the Ute Tribe, also known as Nuche, meaning Mountain People in their native language, discovered natural hot springs near the Colorado River. They recognized the healing powers of the geothermal waters, naming it Yampah, which means Big Medicine. Hot Sulphur Springs in Grand County was originally a winter campground for Ute people, who utilized the springs for medicinal purposes. The Triassic Dolores Formation in southwestern Colorado created hot springs in the corner of the state which were first visited by the Utes near their summer campsites. Rustic hot springs still exist in many mountain communities, and some require a hike or snowshoe trek to soak in the restorative waters. Fifteen miles southwest of the town of Kremmling, Radium Hot Springs has pools of mineral-rich water, accessible via a short hike or by boat on the Colorado River. In the San Juan Mountains near Telluride, Dunton Hot Springs is situated in a former ghost town. It’s been restored with cozy cabins and glamping tents that offer massages, wine tastings, and five-course meals in addition to five different pools to soak in the water rich in calcium bicarbonate–in a setting that’s far from basic.

In recent years, resort communities have begun to offer more and more wellness experiences previously seen only in metropolitan areas. As guests visit from Dallas, San Francisco, and New York, they anticipate hot yoga studios, Pilates sessions, reiki, and meditation during their stay. And although some of these mountain communities have fewer than 1,000 year-round residents, wellness offerings and luxurious amenities have become a mainstay. Eleven Taylor River Lodge, located in a secluded canyon near Almont and Crested Butte, offers spa treatments such as snow shower hydrotherapy and fire yoga, meditation workshops, and a lodge with private cabins in a setting sure to inspire relaxation. From forest bathing and archery to sound healing and cocktail classes, this destination leverages its stunning riverside surroundings to offer transformative experiences. The Telluride Yoga Festival brings yogis from across the country to participate in over 100 events spanning four days in June, ranging from asana at the top of the Jud Wiebe Trail overlooking the quaint town to standup-paddle yoga on Elks Lake to flow state vinyasa with guest DJs.
The Drala Mountain Center is situated on 600 acres of forests, meadows, and valleys in northern Colorado, just outside of Red Feather Lakes. The center has offered Shambhala teachings for over 50 years in this unique location. Retreats range from The Art of Meditation to Entrepreneurial Women Empowerment Workshops to Teaching and Practices from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Sun + Soul Retreats in Summit County curates customizable experiences including private sound baths, circular breathwork ceremonies, and group retreats to enhance relaxation, balance energy, and calm the mind. Summit Sol Wellness in Dillon offers a wide range of classes, from align flow vinyasa to candlelight yin to midday Xpress Yoga to accomodate yogis in various stages of their practice. The array of wellness offerings is boosting year-round visitation to resort communities across the state, as guests book yoga retreats, spa getaways, and meditation workshops in their favorite mountain destinations. Guests are seeking upscale amenities to help them relax, rejuvenate, and recenter whether they are visiting for a long weekend or several weeks at a time.
The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch, tucked into the mountains of Beaver Creek, provides 21,000-squarefeet of relaxation at their signature spa with hot and cold plunge pools, saunas, steam rooms, and a rock grotto along with 19 treatment rooms and an expansive outdoor pool.

As wellness and well-being have become one with the mountain culture, it is certainly top of mind for those looking to call these little slices of paradise home, and buyers in resort markets have come to expect these types of amenities within luxury homes as well. Celebrating Mt. Crested Butte
Fifty Years of Progress Mt. Crested Butte is celebrating its 50th anniversary this winter season, marking half a century since the mountain town with its unwavering pioneer spirit was incorporated. Residents voted to incorporate on November 6, 1973 by a vote of 50-12, ushering in a new era for the community. It was the first municipal incorporation in the state since 1920 and was followed by Snowmass in 1977. After incorporation, Mt. Crested Butte launched significant projects, including the annexation of The Overlook at Mt. Crested Butte and the North Village. To connect with other locations in the Valley, a free bus system was established to link Mt. Crested Butte with both the Town of Crested Butte and Gunnison. Mt. Crested Butte continues to grow and evolve; it incorporated with 854 acres in 1974 and now encompasses 1,138 acres. Almost 1,000 residents call Mt. Crested Butte home, up from the original 89 residents.
To commemorate significant milestones over the past 50 years, Mt. Crested Butte is partnering with the Crested Butte Museum to host a speaker series throughout the 2023-24 winter season at the Elevation Hotel. Pop-up exhibits of historic artifacts and photos of the area will complement the speaker series. The ski area has undergone ownership changes and updates, having been owned by three families since its inception during the 1962-63 season. One of those was local LIV Sotheby's International Realty broker Scout Walton's family, until Vail Resorts' acquisition in 2018. With multiple new developments underway, Mt. Crested Butte continues to grow, and these projects will shape the future of the resort town. As Mt. Crested Butte continues to evolve from a ranching community to a sought-after mountain destination with more amenities, the trailblazing spirit that built this town will prevail and serve it well over the next fifty years.

Getting Better All the Time Home to five ski resorts, Grand County and Summit County offer endless opportunities for onmountain adventure. This ski season, guests will enjoy numerous improvements ranging from new mountain dining options to additional ski terrain and quicker lifts. Breckenridge boasts a bevy of updates, including ongoing upgrades to their snowmaking system, enhancements to the Park Lane terrain park, and the conversion of Peak 8’s 5-Chair to a high-speed quad, which will move skiers and riders up the mountain more efficiently. Copper Mountain launches The Aerie, a new 25,000-square-foot mid-mountain lodge with a fullservice restaurant, bar, and lounge area, along with a coffee shop, event space, and stunning views of the Tenmile Range. The gondola station on the second level allows guests to access elevated on-mountain dining even if they’re not skiing.
Keystone’s expansion of the highly anticipated Bergman and Erickson Bowls provides skiers and riders with 555 additional acres of lift-served terrain, with glades and bowls offering scenic views above the tree line. This terrain expansion incudes a new high-speed, six-passenger chairlift and 16 new trails to explore. Winter Park is introducing Wild Spur Express, a new high-speed six-person chairlift, to the Vasquez Ridge area. Sundog Tap Room, a new dining and gathering space in the Base Village, has 30 beer taps along with shareable appetizers and other drink options– perfect for après! Wax those skis and boards, buckle your boots, and enjoy all these enhancements to the ski resorts of Grand County and Summit County.

Improvements and Expanded Services at Telluride’s Airports

Up, Up, and Away Telluride is renowned for world-class ski slopes, a rich mining history, and its remote and scenic locale deep in the San Juan Mountains. Now, thanks to expanded flight schedules and significant airport improvements, getting to the southwestern corner of Colorado will be much more convenient. The Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), located 68 miles from downtown Telluride, boasts numerous capital improvements and more flight routes this winter season, with service from four major airlines. Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), located just outside of town, offers general aviation services for private and charter flights and year-round commercial service via Denver Air Connection in partnership with United Airlines. Over 460,000 passengers flew through MTJ in 2022, a 20% increase from 2021. This ski season ushers in the completion of a $37 million expansion, doubling the terminal size and adding a new concourse, jet bridges, expanded baggage handling facilities, two new restaurants, and a bar.
This winter season also brings two daily flights on American from Dallas/Ft. Worth on 737 jets, a route previously offered on a regional jet. Southwest added daily service from Dallas Love Field throughout the ski season. United increased daily flights from Newark, a route previously offered only on weekends in January and February. Colorado Flights Alliance partners with United, Delta, American, Southwest, and Denver Air Connection on non-stop service to MTJ and TEX, including 11 major hubs in the winter, five major hubs in the summer, and growing year-round options. Non-stop service is available this winter from Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. Off the Beaten Path In addition to its world-renowned ski resorts, the Vail Valley offers unique options for exceptional winter excursions. The 10th Mountain Division Hut Association manages 38 backcountry huts throughout the Rocky Mountains, linked by 350 miles of trails. These huts can accommodate between six and 20 guests, creating cozy places to stay during a backcountry skiing journey or a multi-day snowshoe hike. Some huts are off-grid, requiring guests to melt snow or source water from nearby streams, while others provide solar power and running water. What they lack in creature comforts is made up in unrivaled access to untouched snow for incredible backcountry skiing and trekking experiences. The Association was founded in 1982 to honor the 10th Mountain Division soldiers who trained at Camp Hale near Vail during WWII.
