SECTION TWO: ACADEMIC WORK

TAKING IT ALL IN

First semester we started off looking at the University of Cincinnati with analytical perspective. How do people move about the space? Where is there high traffic areas? Are there areas on campus that are shielded from rain or will one get wet walking drenched walking to and from class if they forget an umbrella? Is one part on campus for relaxing while another is an atheletic or academic center? The goal was to understand what the space meant to students faculty and staff so that we knew what to improve for the future; we joke that UC stands for Under Construction. It was amazing to learn through GIS, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator the possibilities are truly endless.

TOPOGRAPHY STUDY

Nippert Stadium and Tangeman University Center are major nodes on campus where students faculty and staff interact. Much of this landscape is built with a mixture of brick and concert with McMicken lawn buffering the edge of the TUC building. Given the ideal location and diversity of uses, Main Street and the surrounding areas are a great example of useful space on a dense collegiate campus.

LAND, WATER, & AIR

The East End is a juxtaposition between land, air and water. Columbia Parkway and Hills at the top of the site roll downward to a river town. The river is an important economic and geological feature. Group Project with Cam Williams and Olivia Hedges during 2020 summer semester. In the group, my focus was initial research plus visual graphics and storytelling (ie diagrams, project narrative & presentations).

LOWER MILL CREEK MASTER PLAN

ADVANCED TOPICAL PLANNING DESIGN STUDIO

The studio site design focused on six locations surrounding the lower Mill Creek around Salway Park and up towards Spring Grove Cemetery focusing on the Ohio scenic trailway and surrounding areas.

My group focused on a creating a series of bike-pedestrian pathways that used the built environment as well as the natural areas to create a neighborhood community park focused on community education, resilience, and water management.

My role in the group included land use research, and designing of master plan and site strategies. I focused on adaptive reuse of industrial facilities, using natural green infrastructure solutions to mitigate flooding on the property, and activating edges of the park while maintaining an ecological corridor.

CENTRAL PARKWAY REDESIGN IN OVER-THE-RHINE

PHASING IS KEY

Central Parkway is seen as a huge barrier for pedestrians who want to travel in and out of the neighborhood. The multitude of high speed vehicle lanes make it feel unsafe to cross and at night, poor lighting can make the avenue a even less desirable place to be.

Improvements to Central Parkway would be made in a three phase system.: The first phase would consist of upgrades to crosswalks with signal timing changes that prioritize pedestrians, and better painted crosswalks. Phase two consists of upgrades to lighting on the street to make pedestrians feel safer and make them more visible in crosswalks while also making the planted medians brighter and safer. Phase three would add a bike lane and renovate and expanding green space on the road to increase the “parkway” feel.

In the group, my focus was on the land use research, imageability mapping, creating a timeline for development, and redesign of the parkway itself. My other team members, Brian & Blake, were focused on redesign of two other different sites in the Over the Rhine area not pictured here.

CAN CINCINNATI BE A MIDWEST CLIMATE HAVEN?

To become a successful climate haven, Cincinnati will strengthen its resilience to climate change and in-migration through the design and implementation of an integrated network of green infrastructure and green space.

The approach for this plan will be to establish a green network of strategies that are specific to the needs of place typologies, as well as current and projected growth trends. These place typologies are high social and natural disaster risks, high environmental wellness and social risks, and high natural disaster and medium environmental wellness and social risks.

Indicators that have been established include 1) social needs; 2) disaster management; 3) land availability; and 4) environmental wellness. Metrics identified are as follows 1) population; 2) age; 3) land vacancy; 4) impervious surfaces; 5) landslides; 6) flooding;7) tree canopy; 8) greenspace and 9) temperature.

In this group with Scarlet and Anna, my focus was on graphic communication of our project (ie maps, icons, presentations) and mapping out site availability within Cincinnati (ie three graphics on the far right explaining our potential implementation sites).

Includes: Population and Age.

Includes: Landslides and Flooding.

WOMEN OF CINCY

Women of Cincy is a group focused on respect, diversity and empowerment. They use story telling and community activism to spread stories and create emphathy between people from different walks of life. From June - August 2018, I was the graphic design resident on the team alongside Chelsie and Kierstin, the two co-directors at the time, and a wonderful group of collegiate women from the tristate area. While I focused mainly on designing graphics, photography, branding, and promotion of our social media and website, I was able to participate in the writing process and learned so much about how a small business runs. This organization unfolded – quite by accident – with mission to celebrate and create opportunities for every local woman. We’ve grown exponentially in just over one year, reaching tens of thousands of Cincinnati women –and men – who give a damn about the amazing individuals that make up their community. If you want to reach an audience that cares deeply about their city and show them that you do, too, then this is the place for you.

My co-op at College Hill Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation was focused on re-vamping the organizations existing user interface to make it more interactive and so eventually, renters and business owners could use the page for information on their unit and what is coming to College Hill. The co-op was great because it combined my passions for planning and business. Advocating for small businesses to have retail space along Hamilton Avenue

and housing afforability with multiple mixed use housing developments being created when I was at the office. Website using Wordpress and coding. DAAP Camp and the DAAP Program have been an integral part of my life since freshman year of high time on UC’s campus, did a site visit on Ludlow Avenue and took public transportation to Over the Rhine to visit Model Group and 3CDC. Along with teaching the students the basics of GIS, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, the week was

never realized the immense positive impact teachers can have on a their student. The week ended with a showcase of our final project! We were so impressed with the students willingness to learn the material and are so proud of their accomplishments!

3.7 DAAP CAMP LEAD 22

My role within this organization as a Warren Bennis Student Fellow is in rebranding the organization to reach a wider audience, develop evidence based women’s leadership development programming, and promote the Leadership Institute campus wide so that all University of Cincinnati students can see themselves as a leader. Warren Bennis, UC’s

22nd president and also known as the “Father of Leadership,” believed leaders were made, not born. The Warren Bennis Leadership Institute (WBLI) will harness Bennis’ legacy to transform leaders for a better tomorrow, providing all students with leadership development opportunities such that they graduate as problem solvers, believing in their

potential to lead. The Warren Bennis Leadership Institute will (1) Serve as a hub for student leadership scholarship, programming, opportunities and events. (2) Provide leadership education for community leaders through executive education programs. (3) Function as a research lab dedicated to the study of evidence-based leadership development.
