Working closely with families and children over the years, I’ve come to learn a few things. I’ve met some amazing moms and dads, remarkable kids, and I'd pick up little life lessons and advice along the way in hopes that if I’m ever granted the experience of motherhood, I’d have a little help in my back pocket. By far, the most profound thing I hear from every parent is that when you become a mother, your whole world shifts, you’re no longer the center of your universe (for the best reason). That position goes to your kids — they become that bright light you endlessly revolve around. Kidsguide started 36 years ago (when the first issue published) but I’d say it really began 41 years ago when Liz first became a mother, when her world shifted to make room for Lauren Davis, who became this radiant, lion-hearted, amazing woman. A reflection of her incredible mom, for sure.

Last month, just as it was starting to feel like the good ol’ pre-pandemic days, our little Kidsguide world was turned completely upside down. Lauren passed away unexpectedly — unimaginably. Liz may have started Kidsguide, but Lauren and her brother Charlie, are the heart and soul behind it (literally growing up in the background playing, crying, doing whatever kids do while mom is trying to publish a whole magazine out of her home). Lauren's handprint was even on the cover of the very first edition and featured in every issue since (look for it on this cover!). Of all the things I've learned from parents through the years, there’s not much about when a parent loses a child — maybe because there are just no words. But Lauren was such a force of nature, there's not a day that goes by where we don't talk about the impact she left behind. Lauren continues to be a gracing light over Kidsguide. We’ll continue to help Liz shoulder the burden of loss and Kidsguide will continue to advocate for the hearts of all mothers, especially on days when it’s just too much to face the world.

As always, we are here as a reminder that there is nothing more important than spending time with the people you love. Lauren lived each day with a fierce passion and we hope the ideas you find in this issue ignite a passion in your kids and create joyful moments that live forever. 1. Figure out what type of camp is right for your family Day camps are the most popular and usually operate during working hours. Resident/Sleep Away camps are the classic summer camp experience where kids are away from home. They’re usually held at local mountains or other fun destinations.

2. Find out what your kid’s absolutely obsessed with Summer camps keep kids learning outside of school. And what’s the key to learning? Engagement! When your child’s interested in a topic, they’re more likely to engage with the activities and get the most out of their summer. Talk to your kid about their likes and dislikes. Together, make a list of programs that align with their interests.

3. Don’t forget to look into your favorite places Does your family love visiting the local aquarium, museum, or zoo? Chances are your favorite places and attractions offer a summer camp!

4. Let your child explore outside their comfort zone The best summer camps introduce kids to new experiences and topics. If your kid loves being inside on the computer, try a camp with activities like swimming, hiking, and being out in nature. Same goes for kids who love outdoor activities. Consider camps that develop their STEAM skills like coding, science, robotics, or filmmaking.

5. Ask about discounts, scholarships, and extra costs Looking to save some money? Ask about early-bird discounts, sibling discounts, member discounts, scholarships, camperships, and financial aid. On the flip side, ask about those extra fees and add-ons!

6. Don’t overlook your needs as a parent Your needs matter too. Consider your own work schedule, commute time, budget, and other family obligations.

7. Don’t stress about finding the ‘perfect’ camp There’s tons of awesome camps out there, but no camp will perfectly align with interests, schedules, budget, etc. And don’t panic if your first choice fills up, camps are a great way to explore different things. Find more tips and camps at kidsguidemagazine.com!

Aquariums & Marine Centers

1. Hype up the trip Research about the different animals you could see. Most whale watching companies have a daily log of sightings!

2. Don’t oversell it You might not even see a whale. It’ll be disappointing, but let the kids know that the whales are wild, and they’re free to swim wherever they want.

3. Prep for a long trip Cruises can be over four hours. The novelty of a boat ride could wear off quickly for kids, so bring activities!

4. Bring binoculars Whale watching boats have distancing guidelines to follow, so if you spot a whale, it might be pretty far away.

5. Prevent sea sickness Sea sickness can ruin everything! Take preventative measures, talk to the doctor, and chat with the crew for more tips!
