PROJECT 1

VERTICAL TRANSITIONS

EXPLORATION OF 3 PROVOCATIONS ABOUT VERTICALITY: VERTICAL RELATI

IONSHIP, THE NEW LOCAL, EPHEMERAL URBANISM AND DESIGN INTERVENTIONS

In the first 6 weeks of the semester, we explored concept of Vertical Transition and Transformation through a series of design provocations through research, documentation, observation, mapping , drawing, model making and analysis. The design explorations are developed based on 3 main ideas: • VERTICAL RELATIONSHIP (understanding of verticality and where the design can inhabit a vertical space, programs and supports to encourage vertical rather than horizontal movement / engagement) • THE NEW LOCAL (possibilities to build social and creative networks and nodes at the micro level in the city, ways to enable or support local activities, ways to engage and develop new community through designs) • EPHEMERAL URBANISM (Short term tactics that leads to long term design strategies with significant impact to the urban designs) The design process works have led to my research about types of programs (art performance and creative production) that I would like to focus on the second project which will take place at Turning Circle Precinct (Foxton Lane).

Diagram 1 : Relationship with the streets

Precedent Superblock - Barcelona, Spain

Diagram 2 : local relationship vertically within a building

Restricting car access to the street, allowing more space for foot path and access through street. Further development of this idea involve development public transport network to allow more access to site. • Increase frequency of public transport (more tram routes). Variety of routes per transport types • Providing access to near by car park spaces but not within the super block models.

Vertical relationship Density vs Stages (Switching the roles of audience & performer)

Precedent

Idea

Metropolitan Opera House Theatre NYC, 20th century

Vertical spaces have been used to as a form to have more audience getting great view of the stage. There are existing public spaces within the CBD such as car parks have been constructed with the similar structure of not completely being covered with facades. Mpavilion 2020 has used multiple abandoned public spaces (car park, existed amphitheater ).

Ambitions for creative/ art productions within the design

Design direction

City of Melbourne Creative Strategy

Ambition to create a space for the creative practices: • Artists (space to perform/ display/talk/ work on site) • neighbourhood residents (public space, park) • Students (space to have classes on site) • Supports and connections to the existing creative programs by the City of Melbourne (Immigration Museum, Melbourne Festivals...)

Art Infrastructure Framework - goals: 1. Secure commitment for the delivery of three arts hubs that include mid-sized performance spaces and community arts spaces. 2. To significantly increase the number of creative spaces within the municipality. 3. Advocate to create and incorporate live/ work spaces within the city. 4. Advocate to support the provision of more affordable housing for artists, as per the city’s housing strategy. 5. To ensure the integration of embedded public art projects in new public and private developments.

Testing Ground - Website

Testing Ground is an infrastructure for creative practice supporting experimentation and interdisciplinary practice across art, performance design and education. Programmed through simple application processes, Testing Grounds is a place where people at all stages of practice can test, develop and share their work.

The Arts House - Website

Arts House is a space for Research, Create and Present performing art. RESEARCH is their laboratory stream: artists conduct experiments and explore new ideas. CREATE is where ideas are transformed into practice. We run two streams, calling for new projects once a year. PRESENT is how they share new contemporary art with the community.

PROJECT 2 In the second half of the semester, we will take our processes, approaches and the design outcomes regarding vertical transition and transformation discovered from Project 1 then test them through a design project within Foxton Lane - Turning Circle Precinct. In this project, I will discuss site analysis, research context regarding creative productions with a design direction driven from Project 1 (art performance and art production). The final design outcomes include 3 major interventions: • Vertical Park: a flexible infrastructure that accommodate public park (extension of W Hotel Market Street Park) and amphitheatre for public performances • Art Residence Program: Infrastructure taking place at basement of Reed House • The Third Space: vertical infrastructure hosting educational programs including public talks by Immigration Museum and site excursion for RMIT University students. The roof top allows public access without booking These interventions links through a series of staircases attached to Reed House that links intervention 1 +3, as well as the car park thresholds by removing perforated windows , turning these into folding doors

The interior is divided into the front space as lounge areas for the public and the back of house design as working spaces. Glass and transparent materials are used as window allow the public to learn about art making process, also encourage the conversation between artist and the public about creative production on site.
