“I know the difference WINGS makes in the lives of kids and adults -- and seeing the power of WINGS in the world is pure joy. I often think about two boys from our early years who spent 3 hours each day for 6 years with us. Both had challenging home lives and struggles most of us don’t understand. One boy is married with kids and has a great job; the other has been in jail for a very long time. I like to think that WINGS helps kids both succeed and survive their circumstances.”
Ginny Deerin WINGS Founder
D E A R W I N G S F A M I LY:
There’s a saying at WINGS: Once a WINGS kid, Always a WINGS kid. And it’s true. Not just for our kids, but for our part-time staff, full-time staff, families, fans, and donors. There is longevity in people’s love of WINGS; permanence in our connection. Each birthday -- whether family, friends, or our own -- marks a moment to reflect on time passed and an opportunity to hope forward. Wings for Kids started small, a simple dream to help kids live “joyfully, powerfully, and responsibly.” Nurtured by early supporters and true believers (like you!), WINGS wove social emotional learning (SEL) into a summer camp that paved the way for an afterschool program. From this promising beginning grew multiple after school programs across the southeast and partners from coast-to-coast. Now, 25 years later, thousands of kids and young adults are out in the world with the social emotional skills to thrive. When I run into alumni, I get a rush of emotions. The bond you build in WINGS is incredible and everyone feels like family. So just like family members, I want alumni to know I am here for them. I want to support them in any way possible. I absolutely love hearing what everyone is up to. It’s getting to the point now that I see alumni everywhere. Every time an alum talks to me about WINGS, they are full of gratitude and they have very specific questions about other kids and staff. Whether you were a part of it 20 years ago or 2 years ago, you are part of something amazing. Inside the pages of this Gratitude Report you will find letters and stories from individuals who have rippled the lessons of WINGS into their surroundings. It’s amazing to see how the WINGS family continues to be bold, bright, and making our community better for ALL. Consistently yours since 1998 -
Bridget Laird Bridget Laird, CEO PS - We could not have done this without YOU. I still get goosebumps when I think about it!

DEAR WINGS:
FROM THE MOMENT I STARTED, I FELL IN LOVE WITH YOUR WORK, MISSION, AND VISION. Several years ago, I became attached - dedicated, really - to the WINGS curriculum with the simple intention of making sure EVERY student I worked with was equipped with the social and emotional skills I unfortunately did not receive. What happened next? I felt an immediate connection with my students. Because of what you taught me, I could be an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on. I was able to create a space where my kids felt comfortable and liberated -- more feelings I never experienced as a child. A transformation began in me, too. You, WINGS, have made me more expressive, confident, and optimistic about myself and my future. Growing up, I struggled with finding my place in the world and my purpose. It is because of you, WINGS, that I have learned how to navigate surprises rather than getting wrapped up in them; I see challenges as opportunities to grow and adapt. Over these past few years, I’ve not only discovered my purpose, but have been taught all the skills I need to soar. Happy 25th Anniversary WINGS. I am forever grateful for your kindness and empathy - and for helping me become my best self.
Anjail Shabazz Anjail Shabazz WINGS Program Coordinator and Coach Charlotte, NC PS - I am expecting my first child and I cannot wait to share with her all of the things you have taught me, WINGS!
MEET RAHEIM ARTHUR WINGS ALUMNUS
DEAR WINGS KIDS:
If you told me that 23 years after I was a part of the Wings for Kids program, I would be where I am, still connected to WINGS people, and recreating the WINGS community in my adult life — I wouldn’t have believed you.
But, here I am, 30 years old -- a college graduate, firefighter, father, and small business owner -- and my life is full of strong, healthy relationships from every stage of my life. WINGS taught me this and I’m here to tell you -- soak it ALL up WINGS kids! What you’re experiencing now as a part of WINGS — the fun, the caring mentors, the bonds that feel unbreakable, the lessons on how to be your best self and deal with life’s blows — you will carry with you forever. Every chance is a choice. And, I hope you choose to replicate the community you feel in WINGS as you continue to grow. Early on — with peers I still keep in touch with (one is an apprentice at my barbershop!) and leaders who still check-in on me (my Wings Leader texted me last month!) — I felt something special, but couldn’t name it. As I moved through Burke High school and then on to Morris College, I began to take stock of the relationships in my life, the
people I chose to surround myself with. Then it hit me: relationships matter; genuine bonds cannot be broken. And this all comes back to WINGS — what I learned and experienced from K-5th grade. WINGS kids - as you move through life - notice who keeps showing up for you. Build on it. Tend to it. And use it to create the kind of community you’ve always wanted for yourself. With the right people — you can do and be everything you are dreaming of. I am proud that I was able to buy myself a home, and most recently purchase my mom a townhome. I own a barbershop in North Charleston and it’s here that I see the community I’ve built come to life — my WINGS peers, high school friends, college friends, and firefighter colleagues all SHOW UP and SUPPORT ME. But I didn’t build this alone. I had the foundation of WINGS. And the positive relationships and friendships that pushed me to be better, do better. WINGS kids — I don’t know you all, but I am you. And what I have created, you can create. Stand next to the right people, build those supportive relationships, and nurture them. Take your chances, and make good choices. You deserve this as much as I do. WINGS told us so. We are nothing without the love and support of others. Keep on and know that you’ve got a friend in me,
Raheim Arthur

OUR VISION & MISSION 25 YEARS STRONG
D E A R D O N O R S , F R I E N D S , A N D FA N S :
When I look back at 25 years of Wings for Kids, I see how it all started with small steps and an audacious goal: be a change-maker for young people in underserved communities and a national champion for social emotional learning (SEL) across the nation.
With an impressive mission to equip at-risk kids with the social emotional skills to succeed in school, stay in school, and thrive in life — at a time when social emotional learning wasn’t well known — WINGS persevered one school at a time, then one district at a time, to build deep roots within under-resourced communities in SC, GA, and NC. WINGS’ afterschool program at Title 1 elementary schools is the heart of what we do. Every day magic happens - in-person or virtual — as we serve bright, capable, curious kids and help them grow their wings by understanding good choices, building healthy relationships, navigating challenges, and embracing surprises. Skills we ALL need now more than ever. With a foundation of trust, WINGS’ work extends well beyond the students to families, schools, and community partners. This commitment to the community couldn’t have been more evident than during the pandemic. While the world hunkered down, WINGS staff showed up on the front line. Alongside our families and community partners, we provided the technology and access needed for students to attend school remotely, reimagined programming to provide supervision to kids at home, and provided in-school support for teachers.
With you on our team, WINGS continues to strive for a world where there is equity in academics, opportunity, and emotional well-being for ALL children, regardless of socioeconomic status. While SEL is now better understood due to research, advocacy, funding groups, and organizations like WINGS spearheading best-practices, there is still much work to be done. Our youth need intentional social emotional learning so we all can look forward to a better tomorrow. How do we do this? Together we use the next 25 years of WINGS to turn small steps into giant leaps and one audacious goal into many big, bold goals. We will continue to grow wings day by day, and because of this, a beautiful, big WINGS community will ripple across the country. In solidarity,
Dave Morley Dave Morley WINGS Board Chair

In the early days, all WINGS heard was “Who cares how a child feels if he can’t read and write?” Fast forward 25 years, and we hear “Children’s emotions and social and mental wellness are at the center of their education.” A look back at WINGS’ journey shows how WINGS students, families, mentors, partners, and alumni have shaped a better, brighter community for all, contributing to the growth of SEL today.
Emotional Intelligence -written by Daniel Goleman, a New York Times science reporter — propelled the concept of SEL into popular culture.

A LEGACY GIFT COULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARITABLE GIFT YOU EVER MAKE. Reason #1: 25 Years of Commitment & Trust
LEGACY GIVIN
DEAR WINGS SUPPORTER:
Since WINGS’ inception in 1996, we’ve had an unwavering commitment to advocating for the importance of social emotional learning. Back then, very few understood the important role that emotional intelligence plays in a child’s overall success. And even more so, how a lack of social emotional skills affects underserved populations and perpetuates a cycle of poverty. While we have grown from one program to eleven throughout the Southeast, partnered with existing programs throughout the country, and now have an online platform (soarwithwings.com) —we have remained focused on our commitment to social emotional learning.
As WINGS has spread its wings over the years, we have always done it with fiscal responsibility in mind. We value and respect our donors’ generosity and we strive to honor all of our donors’ commitments to WINGS now and in the future.
Reason #2: How Do You Want to Be Remembered?
We understand that preparing your will or estate plan is a time of deep reflection as you seek to craft both your personal and financial legacy. WINGS is firmly committed to being a leader in the social emotional learning community now and for years to come. A bequest with WINGS allows you to lift up future generations of kids to fly high, succeed, and soar through life.
How does it work?
It is actually pretty simple! You can do it today, with a call to your lawyer, if you already have a will. If not then reach out to us and we can help you get started!
When you choose to give a bequest to Wings for Kids you are helping create a world full of empathy, inclusivity, and integrity which is something that will only grow in importance.
Know that your bequest will truly help our WINGS kids reach the sky and give them the ability to SOAR!

AS AN ORGANIZATION
and one that serves and employs predominantly BIPOC – we did not turn away from the national reckoning and awakening that erupted last summer. Instead, WINGS embraced this teachable moment and created a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative for ALL employees within our organization. We started simple: learning. For many of the white employees within WINGS, a steep learning curve exists; for all employees, DEI has provided opportunities to listen, reflect, and do better. We have also begun to re-examine our program curriculum to ensure it is culturally responsive and representative.

WORDS TO LIVE BY I soar with WINGS. Let me tell you why. I learn lots of skills that help me reach the sky. I LOVE AND ACCEPT who I am on the inside and know my emotions are nothing to hide. Life’s full of surprises that make me feel different ways. If I can CONTROL MYSELF, I’ll have much better days. I understand the CHOICES I MAKE should be what’s best for me to do, and what happens is on me and not any of you. I understand others are unique. I want to learn more about everyone I meet. I want to STEP INTO THEIR SHOES and see what they are going through. I am a friend. I SUPPORT AND TRUST. Working together is a must. KIND AND CARING I will be. I listen to you. You listen to me. I soar with wings. I just told you why. All of these things are WHY I FLY HIGH.
