This schedule includes course listings for the Basic Police Academy and Continued Professional Training (CPT) programs as well as training in driving skills, firearms, security, first aid, motorcycle skills and other public safety-related areas. The course schedule also features contact information for program coordinators in each of the training areas. Please feel free to call or email them for additional information as needed. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST)-certified course consists of 40 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of hands-on training that covers the basic skills, knowledge and abilities every successful public safety telecommunicator needs to meet the demands of this critical work. The basic PST training course meets the American National Standards as contained in the ANSI approved minimum training standard for public safety telecommunicators (APCO ANS 3.103.2.2015). Building on foundational topics such as communication skills, call-taking and radio techniques, the course incorporates the most up-to-date information on technology and workrelated issues in public safety communications centers. Hot topics include NextGen 911, emerging technologies, continuing education and liability. Hands-on training consists of keyboarding, listening and responding to actual 911 and non-emergency calls; skillbuilding exercises in listening, multitasking, information gathering and decision making; entering calls using computer aided dispatching (CAD); and dispatching and clearing calls.

OTHER INFORMATION

This course provides the training mandated by the State of Ohio to prepare persons hoping to gain employment in the field of 911 dispatching. Students who successfully pass the final exam receive APCO Institute certification demonstrating completion of a training course that meets and exceeds industryaccepted national basic training standards.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Tri�C’s Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC)certified program is designed for individuals seeking employment as a police officer in the state of Ohio. The open enrollment academy is also open to individuals who have been sworn with a department and need to complete their Peace Officer Basic Training (Basic Police Academy). This paramilitary-structured academy includes all of the training mandated by OPOTC. The academy includes certifications in the following areas: Hazmat Operations Level, Taser Operator Certification, Active Shooter Training and first aid/CPR certifications.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission training academy fulfills the basic training requirement per AC Section 109:2-9-02(A) for new or newly assigned correctional staff. Students will learn the skills necessary to become a professional correctional officer. Seven units of discussion include administration, legal, jail security, human relations, medical overview, subject control techniques and first aid/CPR/AED. There are written and practical skill tests throughout. At the completion of this academy, participants will be qualified to take the state exam. Note: Workout clothing is necessary for subject control skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course identifies and defines roles and responsibilities, legal and liability issues, quality assurance and stress management for emergency medical dispatchers. Participants will review and discuss basic medical anatomy and physiology along with chief complaint types, resource allocation and effective ways to obtain valuable information from callers to aid in appropriate dispatch and pre-arrival medical instruction.

Participants must have successfully completed the 911 Telecommunication training and a First Aid/CPR/AED class. APCO EMD Certification.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Police and citizens often come into contact with one another for reasons other than criminal investigation. In addition to enforcing criminal law, police officers often engage in community service. This may include providing information and/or assistance to people in need, as well as offering youth education and coordinating community outreach efforts. In many communities, police officers network to establish partnerships between residents and the law enforcement agency. Community-oriented policing seeks to address the causes of crime and to reduce fear of social disorder through problem solving strategies and police-community partnerships. It typically involves a greater use of foot and bicycle patrols and frequent meetings with community groups.

This interactive training addresses the need for an understanding of trauma-informed approaches to those whom the community law enforcement professional serves. The goal of this training is to increase the understanding of trauma, create an awareness of the impact of trauma on behavior and help develop trauma-informed responses. Participants will explore issues of vicarious trauma with the law enforcement community and provide suggestions on how to promote sustainable practices that may mitigate the effects of vicarious trauma.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This training is required for persons reappointed as peace officers on or after January 1, 1989 who have had a break in service of more than one year but less than four years. This course meets the requirements described in Section 109: 2-1-12(D) of the Ohio Administrative Code.

Participants must provide a copy of their determination letter prior to the start of class and will be required to take the state exam at an OPOTC facility approximately two weeks after class concludes.

The Police Officer Physical Agility Exam is conducted for approximately 65 police departments in Northeast Ohio. This exam measures participants’ fitness performance as it relates to the law enforcement profession.

A certificate of completion will be issued upon successful completion of the exam. Participants are responsible for providing the agency/agencies they are testing for with a copy of the certificate. Test scores will be forwarded to the agency on the participant’s behalf. Certificates and scores may be valid for up to one year, depending on agency standards.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This eight-hour course provides officers with the opportunity to develop the skills needed to maneuver their patrol vehicles with speed, precision and agility on a dedicated tarmac pad, passing through a series of coned work stations. These activities require repeated and tightly-timed runs, with lessons in proper steering techniques, acceleration, right and left turns, ABS and threshold braking in an emergency situation and operating the vehicle in reverse, while maneuvering around obstacles on a simulated curving roadway.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This intense firearms training course focuses on tactical speed shooting, development of aggressive gun-handling skills and dynamic action while deploying the semiautomatic pistol. Training takes place in a professional classroom and state-of-the-art indoor range. This course is instructed by tactical operators with years of hands-on, real-life experience and training, certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and/or the National Rifle Association. This training provides an opportunity to go in front of the line and practice your shooting, an option that is not available at public ranges. The concepts of dominating the weapon, threat and all visual areas while continuously moving will be emphasized throughout the class. Students will develop reflexive gun-handling skills that will enable them to quickly and efficiently engage threats while performing multiple complex tasks. Students will also learn and practice flanking moves while drawing and acquiring deadly force threats and scanning for additional threats.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course prepares students to write and present lesson plans in a law enforcement setting. Topics include instruction in the theories of adult education, teaching techniques, and lesson plan development; student learning objectives; platform teaching skills; facilitative learning, evaluation and measurement; working with problem learners; and training aid usage. This is an academically challenging course merging theory and practice. Participants are required to develop and present a 15-minute lesson plan, a 30-minute lesson plan and a 45-minute course of instruction using a prepared commission basic training lesson plan. Participants should bring resource materials and requisite props to create and conduct instruction in a law enforcement cognitive or psychomotor skills area. There is classwork to be completed outside of class to prepare for class projects. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop, flash drive and word processing software with which they are familiar.

The Advanced Rider Skills (ARS) course complements an experienced rider’s basic skills and helps with personal risk assessment. It includes a fast-paced classroom segment with interactive activities to improve perception and hazard awareness. Range exercises enhance both basic and crash avoidance skills. Improving braking and cornering finesse are emphasized. ARS starts in a small-group, discussion-oriented classroom session, moves to the range (parking lot) for riding exercises and ends back in the classroom.

KeyBank Public Safety Scholarship The KeyBank Public Safety Scholarship Initiative was established to support efforts to increase the number of minorities and females in the public safety career field. The scholarship provides funding for select Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) Public Safety programs, including: • EMT Paramedic • Fire Academy • Basic Police Academy • Corrections • Criminal Justice

KeyBank Public Safety Scholarship Requirements: • Must be a minority and/or female. • All students must complete the FAFSA and utilize any Pell funding offered before scholarship funds will be awarded. • All students awarded funding will be required to fulfill a minimum number of community and/or service hours. • Students will not be accepted into any public safety program or awarded scholarship funding if they have an outstanding debt with the college. • Students must meet all of the program requirements and be accepted into the program before any scholarship funds will be awarded.
