WELCOME LJCDS TORREY FANS TO THE 2021 SEASON ONE >>>
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY HAS BEEN DEVELOPING SCHOLARS, ARTISTS, AND ATHLETES OF CHARACTER SINCE 1926. While many schools have fine scholars, artists, and athletes, LJCDS is wonderfully unique because it endeavors to foster growth in every individual student on campus as a scholar, an artist, and an athlete. And, as the Country Day community works to develop its young thinkers, actors and ball players, it does so with a constant focus on honesty, integrity and service towards others. La Jolla Country Day believes that sound character is every bit as important as being smart, creative, and physically skilled. Because we are in the business of fostering scholars, artists, and athletes of character, athletics at La Jolla Country Day is a vital component of each student’s educational process. Country Day teaches physical education classes to every child ages 3 through the 8th grade, five days per week. LJCDS fields 19 middle school and 34 upper school programs and almost 100 teams will compete in Torrey Blue in 2020-21. In recent years the Torreys have won league, conference, regional and/or state championships in men’s cross-country, football, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball, men’s swimming, men’s water polo, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s tennis. Moreover, Country Day prepares its student-athletes to compete at the next level; Twenty-five members of the class of 2020 will play basketball (6), baseball (5), football (4), lacrosse (4), soccer (2), volleyball (2), and water polo (1) at the college level at some of the best schools in the country including Harvard, Colombia, MIT, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Oregon and many more. Sixty-eight former Torreys will compete for the nation’s finest college athletic programs in 2020-21, including eleven in the Ivy League. In all, seventy-four former Torreys will compete at the college and professional levels in 2019-20. Our football, cross country, track & field, field hockey, golf, tennis, and swim & dive programs are vital components of Big Blue Athletics and do much to foster Torrey Pride on our campus. I join you in cheering for our studentathletes as they bring honor to themselves, their families, their teams and their school community.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL
THE 2021 SPRING FOOTBALL TORREYS LOOK TO REPLACE SOME KEY PLAYERS FROM AN 8-4, CIF SEMI-FINALIST, AND RECORD-BREAKING 2019 SQUAD. The quarterback position consists of a competitive battle between Matthew Davis ’22, and Bito Bass-Sulpizio ’23, who both offer key abilities to lead our Torrey Raid Offense. Whoever is throwing the ball around the field will have plenty of options to throw to in returning All-League and 100+ catch WR and captain Daniel Rosenberg ’21, as well other returners Mondo Nishiba ’22, Evan Hiremath ’22, and Charlie Gooding ’23, and newcomers Anthony Aruffo ’23 and Jaden Mangini ’24 will also add depth to our offensive firepower. The Hogs on the offensive line will be anchored by three-year starters and captains Owen Benjamin ’21 and Devin Longenecker ‘21, and All-League Sam Alligood ’22. Captain Michael Gibbs ’21 will join the line along with Sam Geddes ’22, Evan Estrada ’23 and Kyle Minasian ‘24. The defense will be led by Gibbs at linebacker, Rosenberg and Nishiba at safety, and Alligood on the defensive line. Anthony Aruffo ‘23, Jaden Mangini ’24, and Chris Hughes ’24 will round out our linebackers, with Longenecker, Benjamin, Geddes and Estrada providing depth on the defensive line. The defensive backs will have plenty of depth and experience in Hiremath, Gooding, Oliver Stephenson ’23, and a crew of talented freshmen. The Torreys play a competitive schedule in the Coastal League and look to continue to build on their traditions and add more bricks to their wall this spring! ONE TREE, ONE TEAM, TORREY PRIDE!

2021 VARSITY ROSTER
The Torrey football program goes all the way back to 1962, when we played 6-man football. Coaches Bob Kennedy and John Fahey helped launch the football program in the 1960s and early 1970s. The school did not field a football team between 1975 and 1980, until Bruce Corbin took the reigns and restarted the program in 1981. Rick Woods then became the coach and lead the Torreys for 13 years, leading them to 8-Man Coastal League Championships in 1985, 1990, and 1991 and 1994. The 1990 and 1991 team was led by 1994 Heisman Trophy winner, Rashaan Salaam, who would later go on to be a first round draft pick by the Chicago Bears; Salaam still ranks fourth all-time in San Diego history for single season scoring with his 51 touchdowns in 1990 - he also rushed for over 2,000 yards in only 11 games. Current strength and line Coach Kevin Reaume became the head coach after Coach Woods. When Jeff Hutzler took over in 2002, the Torreys went back to 8-Man football until 2004. After 3-peating as CIF Champs, Country Day returned to 11-Man football in 2005, and joined the Pacific League until 2010, winning the League four times. In 2011, the Torreys rejoined the Coastal League, with the Bishop’s School, Francis Parker, Horizon Christian, and Santa Fe Christian. The Torreys won the CIF Championship in both 2014 (D5) and 2016 (D4). The 2016 Torreys advanced all the way to the State Championship game. The Torreys have rejoined the Pacific League for the 2019 season.
L A J OL L A COUN T R Y D AY - P R ID E C O U N C IL The Torrey Football Pride Council is an integral part of the football program. Players select team leaders to serve on this leadership group that meets every week with the head coach. The Pride Council works on leadership skills while also addressing any team needs or challenges together with Coach Hales.
T OR R E Y F OO T B A L L M ISSION S TAT E M E N T Perseverance, Accountability, Integrity, and Enthusiasm are the Roots of Torrey Pride and the Torrey Football Program. Torrey football players are expected to carry on Country Day’s rich traditions by enthusiastically striving for excellence in meeting the high standards that Torrey Pride demands. The ultimate goal of the Torrey Football Program is to guide tomorrow’s leaders, through the game of football, to become loving men who pride themselves on their Perseverance, Accountability, Integrity, and Enthusiasm. Torrey Football coaches lead by example in demanding that each player is accountable, perseveres through adversity, and handles himself with integrity at all times. While each coach demonstrates his passion for football on a daily basis, it is his love of working with and teaching young men that drives his desire and enthusiasm to coach at La Jolla Country Day. We teach and stress the idea of No P.A.I.N., No Gain. In order to gain in life and on the field, players will battle adversity. Without P.A.I.N., players will not reach their full potential.

L A JOL L A COUN T R Y D AY F O O T B A L L - B L A C K S T R IP E S Black Stripes are senior Torrey football players playing their fourth season for La Jolla Country Day School. Black Stripes are leaders who are respected, followed, and emulated because they are the walking embodiment of the Torrey football program’s ideals of dedication, courage, work ethic, loyalty, and team. HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE CROSS COUNTRY
Strong performances at the 2019 CIF meet led to better-thananticipated team finishes and led to raised expectations for this year’s XC squad. Unfortunately, the many delays to the season and the overall disruption to sports and school in San Diego have led to a smaller team and a shorter XC season. A core group of runners, led by Paul Criado, Jake Needle, and John Guckian, continued to attend optional runs all fall and into the winter. Several runners also attended weekly Zoom meetings as we prepared for a season of uncertainty. While XC was the first sport to resume in San Diego, restrictions still in place involving competitions have ruled out all the traditional invitationals and also the State and CIF meets. We are focusing on dual meets and team time trials, and fingers are crossed that we may still have league or conference finals. Though this isn’t the season any of us were hoping for and it is especially disappointing for seniors Walter Chen, Daven Gujral, Andrew Kuhn, Tian Zhou, Jaden McDaniel, Grace Karmazin-Schneider, Jenna Hernandez, and Alexcia Doak, the team is making the best of the season and enjoying the simplicity of running together.
Scott Sanders >> HEAD COACH Coach Scott Sanders has coached the cross country teams since 1999, and has been head coach since 2001. During this time, he has worked with many terrific runners and dedicated assistant coaches, and the men’s and women’s teams have both seen significant success, including conference and CIF championships and podium finishes at State. Coach Sanders was named San Diego section Boys Coach of the Year in 2013. In addition to big meets and watching runners improve, his season highlights include trail runs, team dinners, and the annual alumni run. A graduate of Washington & Lee University (’90) and Middlebury College (’93), Coach Sanders joined the LJCD faculty in 1998 and currently teaches History and French in the Upper School. He also leads the sophomore experiential education trip to Utah. His children, Ethan (’21) and Logan (’22), are both lifers at Country Day.
John Hill >> ASSISTANT COACH Coach John Hill coached cross country, track and swimming at Suffield Academy in Connecticut from 1988-1990. He assisted in building the kids program for the Triathlon Club of San Diego 2004-2014. After running cross country in high school, and his first year in college, he switched sports and swam for his final two years at Pomona College (’88). He has been an active participant in triathlons for more than 20 years having raced distances from the US Sprint National Championships to the Ironman World Championships. His son Alex (LJCDS ’18) was a two-time team captain on the LJCDS cross country team and currently is a member of USC’s triathlon team. His son Max (LJCDS ’21) doesn’t particularly like to run.
Ryan Najera >> ASSISTANT COACH Coach Ryan Najera has 14 years of running experience and accomplishments, including running cross country and track locally at UC High. He currently studies engineering at SDSU. Coach Ryan decided to give back to the running community and teach what he has learned in order to encourage and develop student-athlete skills at La Jolla Country Day, drawing on experiences like competing at state championships, in nation-wide invitationals, in regional competitions, all the way to classic dual meets. Coaching distance track and cross country at La Jolla Country Day since the spring of 2019 has been an amazing experience for Coach Ryan, and he looks forward to having even more great seasons.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE TRACK & FIELD
This year’s track and field team is full of newcomers and multi-sport student athletes. They have come out to challenge themselves and test their mental and physical fortitude. Our strong senior class will lead the way: Jenna Hernandez, Ethan Estrada, Alexcia Doak, Daven Gujral, Grace Karmazin-Scheider, Andrew Kuhn, and Jazzy Anousinh.
The Distance Squad has grown and looks for guidance from the experienced Daven, Grace, and Andrew. They are passing the squad to a strong junior, Paul Criado. Sam Alligood and Jenna Hernandez, multi-sport student athletes, look to increase their marks in the throws, providing leadership for a young throwing team. Senior Ethan Estrada and newcomer Jordan Kinkead are ready to lead the young pole vaulters to new heights. Juniors Stuart Needle and sophomore Micah Afshar lead the way over the hurdles while junior Capri Nova, senior Jazzy Anousinh, and sophomores John Guckian and Catherine Gizzo blaze a trail on the track. I look forward to a successful season with the team setting new personal records and strengthening their passion for track and field. Go Torreys!!

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FIELD HOCKEY
The Torrey Field Hockey program will enter itsfourth season competing as a Varsity team, and though much has been uncertain, this is primed to be our most exciting season yet! Our seniors started out with me in my first year at LJCDS as freshmen and have been fundamental in the growth and development of Torrey Field Hockey. Last year our core covenant was GREAT (growth, resilience, enthusiasm, accountability, together) and, as a younger team, our goal was to build a strong team community that was passionate about field hockey. Not only did they gain a love for the game, but team leaders of all grade levels emerged who stepped up in different ways during the offseason to continue making our program better. Also, for the first time, we have 9th graders joining our team with two years of experience playing in our MS Field Hockey program, andtheywill make an immediate impact. All this combined with the leadership of our returning captain Olivia Brass leaves no doubt that we are wellpositioned tohave a successful season! We should match up well against other City Eastern League teams as we attempt to make CIFs for the first time.No matter what our season looks like, it will definitely be one to follow!
Krista Jackson >> HEAD COACH A San Diego native, Krista started playing field hockey at University City High School. She continued her career playing at Davidson College (NC) where she studied Sociology and Communications. Upon graduating in 2012, she returned to UC where she spent four years coaching field hockey and also headed the inaugural season for the girls’ lacrosse team in 2017. In the summer of 2017, Krista accepted the position as Head Field Hockey and Women’s Lacrosse Coach at LJCDS. Now a full-time PE Teacher on campus, Krista enjoys the opportunity to build deeper connections with these stellar student-athletes year-round both on and off the field!
Megan Hempsey >> ASSISTANT COACH Coach Megan's field hockey career began at University City High School in San Diego. Throughout high school, she played goalie on the varsity team, with various club teams, and trained at the Olympic Training Center with the Futures program. Megan studied Sociology, Religion, and Mathematics at Ripon College in Wisconsin. After playing a variety of sports in college, she continued her field hockey career as the Assistant Varsity Coach at La Jolla Country Day beginning in 2017. Megan has a level 1 coaching certification from USA Field Hockey and is excited to continue to share her passion for field hockey with the LJCDS community.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE GOLF
WOMEN’S GOLF SPRING SEASON PREVIEW: With the opening of all sports this spring season of 2021, women’s golf is back in the game. Fiona Paterson and Jordan Salter are our two returning seniors. They are joined by three newcomers, Sr. Cecelia Hormovitis, Jr. Kaia Brown, and Jr. Emily Bernstein. We are going to get after it this season with our mindset being to improve every day. We expect our results will reflect the work we put in. Fiona was 1st team all Coastal League last season and we expect her to play her way onto 1st team once again. Jordan has put in a lot of work and made great strides in her game. Look for her to join Fiona on 1st team all-league. Cecelia, Kaia, and Emily all took up the game in response to athletics being on hiatus beginning last spring. We see improvement in their games on a daily basis, and are glad to have them contributing to our team this season. There have been many challenges over the course of this academic year. It is so great to get back out playing again, and we are excited to see where the season takes us. Go Torreys.
MEN’S GOLF SPRING SEASON PREVIEW: Men’s golf returns two seniors, Zach Banner and Jeramiah Woods. Zach has been a three-year varsity player, while Jeramiah has played both junior varsity and varsity. We have four new team members, Sr. Devon Jha, Jr. Akshar Sharma, So. Andres Icaza, and Fr. Giovanni Cozic. While down some in our numbers this season, there is great enthusiasm for playing the game among this group. We have been out practicing for a few weeks now, the kids playing well past sunset most afternoons. We look forward to competing against some of the best teams and players in the county, including Torrey Pines B, St. Augustine, and Mater Dei. Our league season includes matches with Classical Academy and Pacific Ridge among others. While we are short on match experience, we will grow and be a better team as the season progresses. It will be fun to watch it all play out. Go Torreys.
Bob Simon >> HEAD COACH Coach Simon has been at LJCDS since 2000. He was born and raised in Seattle, Washington and still closely follows the doings of the college and professional sports teams from the area. Coach Simon graduated from San Diego State University in 1984.
Greg Chachas >> ASSISTANT COACH Coach Chachas’ graduated from LJCDS in 2014 and was a four-year member of the golf team. During his LJCDS career, Greg was a member of four Coastal League championship teams as well as the 2012 Division II CIF Champions. He was also fortunate to play with many extremely talented players during his time at LJCDS, including Anthony Paolucci, Alberto Sanchez, and Khaled Attieh, all of whom are currently playing professionally. He has been a lifelong golfer and he is extremely excited to continue his passion for the game coaching for La Jolla Country Day.
Adair Warren >> ASSISTANT COACH Adair has been a golfer and advocate for the game since before he can remember. He was introduced to the game at four years old and has been playing for the past 20 years. He loves the golf saying, “drive for show and putt for dough”. Every shot needs to be intentional no matter if it's a 300 yard drive or a two foot putt. He’ll focus his coaching on course management, mental mindset of limiting bad shots, and 100 yards-in pitching and putting. He loved his time playing on the Country Day golf team and is incredibly excited about being able to give back to the program that gave him some of his most cherished golfing memories.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE SWIM & DIVE
OUR COUNTRY DAY SWIM AND DIVE TEAM ENTERS THE 2021 SEASON WITH ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED ROSTERS IN TEAM HISTORY. Both our girls and boys will have a nicely balanced mix of experienced juniors and seniors, as well as a strong contingent of talented freshmen and sophomores. On the girls’ side, senior team captainsTaylor Wassel and LaurenMiller will look to build upon 2019 seasons in which Taylorplaced at CIF in two events – 200 Free and 100 Fly – and earned All-League in Fly, whileLauren was both the City Conference diving champion and a CIF finalist. In the diving competition, Lauren is joined by senior Anastasiya Ivanova, a top10 City Conference finisher and CIF qualifier in 2019 (her first season of competitive diving). Junior Dani Hackman is the reigning Eastern League Swimmer of the Year, our team record holder in the 200 Free, and a CIF Finalist and All-League in the 200 Free and 500 Free.Joining Dani as high impact 11th graders are Gabby Schmidt (sprint free, breaststroke), Caroline Kelly (freestyle, breaststroke) and Emily Bergan (backstroke). Overall, our girls have a great opportunity to challenge for an Eastern League title, as we combine consistent talent with increased depth. Our Torrey boys are the defending Eastern League champs, going undefeated in 2019 in league competition. Senior team captain Ethan Estrada broke our school record once againin 2019, and he looks to improve upon his top-10 finishes at both City Conference and CIF. Junior twins Shawn and Jerry Zhou took the Eastern League by storm in 2019, going undefeated in league competition, and will excel in a wide range of events. At the championship level in 2019, Shawn earned All-League honors in the 200 Free, while Jerry earned All-League honors in the 50 and 100 Free. Both boys have their sights set on top-5 finishes at CIF in their primary events. Finally, senior captain Sam He (freestyle, breaststroke), junior Colton Ace (freestyle, fly), as well as sophomores Eric Yang (I.M., freestyle), Harris Feinman (freestyle), and Alex Randall (I.M., backstroke) add speed and depth to our talented boys’ roster. Ultimately, the LJCDS boys will look to defend their Eastern League title, with Christian and Patrick Henry being the primary competitors. The Torrey swimmers and divers compete in the Eastern League of the San Diego City Conference (Country Day, Patrick Henry, Mira Mesa, Serra, Christian, and Point Loma). LJCDS.ORG
