BASEBALL 2 0 2 0 J U N I O R VA R S I T Y >>A MESSAGE FROM THE BASEBALL
HEAD COACH This year’s pitching staff returns with over 200 innings pitched in 2019 and 13 wins. It is a talented group that includes 3 seniors who will be pitching in college next year (EJ Kreutzmann (Columbia), Aidan Risse (Bard College), Joseph Cetale (undecided at the moment)). Juniors Michael McClellan, Ben Pajak, and Peyton Wallace are likely to round out the staff. Senior Vincenzo Lucia, and sophomores Alvaro Partida and Chris Esquivel will be valuable assets out of the bullpen. Offensively, Zach Schwartzberg (Gonzaga commit) will lead the charge along with Kreutzmann and Cetale. Junior Ben Pajak and sophomores Chris Esquivel, Johnny Luetzow, and Jake Bold finished the year very well in 2019. This team has a lot of depth and is excited to see what they can do.

Becky Wedel >> ASSISTANT COACH This will be Rebecca (Becky) Wedel second year as assistant coach at LJCD. She played for Radford University in the Big South Conference. Finished her career under Aileen Morales as program's all-time leader in on-base percentage (.457), third in runs scored (149) and walks (74) and tied for fourth in home runs (32). Set new NCAA record for career HBPs on Apr. 6 at Appalachian State and finished with 111. Led team with career-bests of 34 RBIs and 45 runs scored and co-led team with nine home runs to equal career-high. One of four Highlanders to start all 61 games. Selected as a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American. Continued her career as a graduate assistant coach for the University of West Georgia under Al Thomas as she completed her master’s degree.
The 2019 Country Day softball team saw the Torreys finish with a .500 record. Three members of our team graduated, leaving us with nine returners. We finished the season with (3) 1st Team All-League players, and (2) 2nd Team All-League Players. Country Day softball has been lucky enough to receive a new turf infield that ‘plays like dirt’ and a new sound system as upgrades to our field this summer.
Returning seniors include starting short-stop Malia Acol (Captain), starting pitcher/outfielder Lauren Ziment (Captain), starting 3rd baseman Paris Correia (Captain), and Bella White who ended 2018 with a knee injury and should be coming back strong; Three of which are active travel ball softball players year-round and four year starters for LJCD. Our loan returning junior is Mia Muzquiz, she brings tenacity to every practice and game. Our returning sophomores include Paige Bilski, Alana Fesili, Charlotte Reed, and DJ Villareal. Each of these players made an impact in our 2019 season and we look forward to seeing what positions they take over this season. We will have quite a few fresh faces at all grade levels that will put our returners to the test this season. The Country Day softball team with another large roster of 16-19 excellent student-athletes that are prepared to compete in the Coastal League 2020.

2020 SENIORS
HEAD COACH The 2020 Torreys Lacrosse team has high hopes and rightfully so. The 2019 Torreys were the CIF Division 1 runners-up. Lone senior Wynton Bastian helped carry the Torreys to the CIF playoffs each of their previous seasons. This year’s team is led by an outstanding group of captains highlighted by seniors Henry Little, Jonny Polarek, Trent Grainger and Jackson Hamman. Nico Hanna, Daniel Rosenberg, Keon Badiee, Gus Dernbach, and Abed Burni stabilize a defense that could be the Torreys strength this year. At the other end, Alex Besharati, Jon Hell, Henry Little, and Brett Grainger bring weapons to what is sure to be a potent offense. Rookie sensations Adam and Patrick Jette, Jackson Fields and Nick Albert look ready to contribute. The Torreys play in what may be San Diego’s toughest division: The Coastal Conference. Having fallen behind the pack in the last few years, there are many reasons for optimism this spring. The Torreys will need to build on their strong 2019 performance while staying true to their core value of Brotherhood.

2020 COACHING STAFF. SCHEDULE & ACHIEVEMENTS
HEAD COACH Our Country Day swim and dive team enters the 2020 season with one of the largest squads we’ve ever had. Both our girls and boys will have a nicely balanced mix of experienced juniors and seniors, as well as a strong contingent of talented freshmen and sophomores. On the girls’ side, senior team captain Danielle AmirLobel will look to build upon a 2019 season in which she earned All-League in an individual event (100 Free) for the first time. Junior captain Taylor Wassel placed at 2019 CIF in two events – 200 Free and 100 Fly – and earned All-League in Fly. Fellow junior captain Lauren Miller was both the City Conference diving champion and a CIF finalist. In the diving competition, Lauren is joined by junior Anastasiya Ivanova, a top-10 City Conference finisher and CIF qualifier in 2019 (her first season of competitive diving). Sophomore Dani Hackman is the reigning Eastern League Swimmer of the Year, our team record holder in the 200 Free, and a CIF Finalist and AllLeague in the 200 Free and 500 Free. Joining Dani as high impact 10th graders are Caroline Kelly (freestyle, breaststroke) and Emily Bergan (backstroke). Overall, our girls have a great opportunity to challenge for an Eastern League title, as we combine consistent talent with increased depth. Our Torrey boys are the defending Eastern League champs, going undefeated last season in league competition. Senior team captains Daniel Hotson and Austin Yang will build upon successful 2019 seasons, in which they took home All-League honors in the 500 Free (Daniel) and 100 Back (Austin). As a diver, junior Ethan Estrada broke our school record once again last season, and he looks to improve upon his top-10 finishes at both City Conference and CIF. Sophomore twins Shawn and Jerry Zhou took the Eastern League by storm in 2019, going undefeated in league competition, and will excel in a wide range of events. At the championship level, Shawn earned All-League honors in the 200 Free, while Jerry earned AllLeague honors in the 50 and 100 Free events. Both boys have their sights set on top-5 finishes at CIF in their primary events. Finally, junior Sam He (breast), as well as freshman Eric Yang (I.M., free) add speed and depth to our talented boys’ roster. Ultimately, the LJCDS boys will look to defend their Eastern League title, with Christian and Patrick Henry being the primary competitors. The Torrey swimmers and divers compete in the Eastern League of the San Diego City Conference (Country Day, Patrick Henry, Mira Mesa, Serra, Christian, and Point Loma).
Nate Heppner >> HEAD COACH Nate Heppner grew up in Palmer, Alaska, where he was a four-year varsity member of the Palmer High swim team. Coach Heppner continued his swimming career in Spokane, WA at Whitworth University, where he was a member of the 1996 squad which won Whitworth’s first NCIC Swimming Championship and finished second at Nationals. The 1996 team was inducted into the Whitworth Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame in 2005. Coach Heppner spent the 1997/98 season as an assistant swim coach at Whitworth before leaving Spokane to pursue teaching. This is Coach Heppner’s 18th year at La Jolla Country Day.
Sydney Hammerness >> ASSISTANT COACH Sydney grew up in the Imperial Valley and started swimming competitively when she was eight. Sydney swam through high school and kept swimming on the Colorado State Univsersity Club team in college. She started coaching when she was 16 for the Imperial Sea Lions. When Sydney moved to San Diego, she started coaching the JCC Barracuda Swim Team, as well as with the Master’s program. Coaching is one of Sydney’s passions and she is excited for the opportunity to continue her coaching and expand her experience with LJCDS.

Right behind them bringing depth and experience are seniors Erik Earl, Alan Wong, junior Allen Tu, and sophomores Mondo Nishiba and Enzo Grimaud. Finally we have a good group of freshman ready to step up and contribute, Jake Murray, Ryan Scwhillinski, Brandon Pyo, Colin Guckian and Lyle Steger. Despite losing five starters from last season and playing in a very tough Coastal League this year, the boys will look to compete in typical Torrey Tennis fashion. HEAD COACH The 2020 Men’s Volleyball Season will be our Re-Grand Opening of the program. We will be led by returning senior Jok Jok from the previous season two years ago. Seniors Andy Xiao, Ethan Burger, Matthew Tibbets, and Thomas Semprez will join the team in our quest for success. The men’s volleyball squad will have seven under classmen to continue to build the Torrey culture. Our emphasis will be on being a good learner, working harder than we are currently working, and being focused and on task. We will be playing in the Pacific League in Division IV and will be looking for big support from the student body. I feel blessed and fortunate to be apart of this great opportunity.
