La Jolla Country Day School exists to inspire greatness for a better world. Our brand promise— launched in the 2016–2017 school year—commits to developing a culture and community of faculty, staff, students and families who believe in something bigger than themselves. Greatness is not achieved through luck or by accident; it is a process. The school recruits teachers and students of character who have a strong work ethic and a desire for greatness in whatever realm inspires them. LJCDS, in return, offers an exceptional academic program through an outstanding faculty who mentor the pursuit of excellence. FOUR TEN ETS O F G RE ATN E SS

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear La Jolla Country Day School Community, LJCDS just completed a very successful 2016–2017 year. Our students are performing at high levels in the arts, academics, athletics and in their development as leaders of character. Our faculty consistently earn praise as educators and leaders. Our alumni demonstrate that an LJCDS education prepares students to make meaningful contributions to our global society. Most importantly, through the hard work and support of faculty, staff, parents, alumni and friends, we are changing the world one student at a time. Faculty educate the whole student— mind, body and soul. Administrators and staff work tirelessly to provide the resources and structures that keep our students productive, happy, safe and inspired for a lifetime of learning. Families and alumni volunteer their time and donate generously to the school to support its mission. It is a privilege to witness the remarkable achievements of our students and alumni: acts of kindness, scholarship, artistic expressions, good sportsmanship and service to humanity. When you are immersed in the daily life of the school, you quickly gain an understanding of the powerful role that LJCDS plays in the lives of our students and the future of our community. Thank you for helping make this possible.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT Dear La Jolla Country Day School Community, It is my pleasure to share the 2016–2017 La Jolla Country Day School Annual Report on Giving. These pages contain the names of parents, friends, students, grandparents, faculty, staff and alumni who have given generously to support our mission to prepare students for a lifetime of intellectual exploration, personal growth and social responsibility. We are well aware of the commitment and sacrifice behind every gift, and we are grateful. We chose “Rooted in Generosity, Growing our Legacy” as the theme for our ninetieth anniversary celebration. As we look toward our centennial in 2026, we honor past donors who gave selflessly to La Jolla Country Day School and consider our place in Country Day’s history. What will be the legacy we leave behind? When we support La Jolla Country Day School, we lead by example and model for our children the importance of giving back to those places and institutions that matter. The goal of our development team is to create a culture of philanthropy where pride is evident and giving is seen as a privilege. Because of your generosity, we exceeded our fundraising expectations this year. We appreciate the Board of Trustees, Parents Association and our Country Day Fund parent ambassadors for their leadership and dedication. Countless volunteer hours provided by talented and caring individuals strengthen our school. You are making an impact that will last a lifetime. With gratitude,

Susan Nordenger Assistant Head of School for Development

Most independent schools charge tuition and fees that fit within a fairly narrow range because of competition in the marketplace. As a result, tuition income does not tend to distinguish one institution from another in terms of the breadth, scope and quality of the educational program. Philanthropy is the distinguishing factor. Those schools with large endowments and a robust flow of current operating gifts are able to enrich the student experience far more than one that is almost totally tuition-dependent. COUNTRY DAY F U N D DON OR SPOT L I G H T

LADAN ALAVI DANESHMAND

Parent of Darya ’19, Sahra ’22 and Ava ’24

If you are on campus, you are likely to find Ladan volunteering. Ladan has helped in her daughters’ classrooms, supported our athletic and arts programs, assisted with faculty appreciation events, hosted new parent welcome gatherings, participated on the Blue Bash committee, and more. In addition to giving her time, Ladan and her family donate to the Country Day Fund. Ladan says, “Supporting the Country Day Fund comes naturally as another practical and necessary way of promoting the school’s mission of inspiring greatness for a better world. The best interest of the students is, of course, best served when we all share the single common overriding goal of supporting and promoting our children’s school and its advancement goals that require funding.” Ladan and her family give to CDF in a unique and wonderful way. Ladan and her husband, Said Daneshmand, make a gift on each daughter’s birthday, and each daughter, on her birthday, also donates to the fund. Ladan explains how giving on the girls’ birthdays celebrates them: “We believe that a highly effective way of showing our daughters how greatly we value them and their development is to honor the school they call their own and to contribute to it in different ways…. Naturally, our daughters know that any financial contribution to the school, beyond tuition payments, is not obligatory. Our hope is that by witnessing our willingness and enthusiasm to support their school to the extent we can, they clearly realize how we cherish them. We also hope they appreciate even further the value of receiving an education of high caliber.” Ladan tells us why she thinks it is important for her daughters to give to CDF. She says, “When the girls walk into the development office as soon after their birthdays as possible to turn in their own personal contributions to the Country Day Fund, we hope a sense of pride takes over them with the realization that they, independently of their parents, can show gratitude and support of their school while gaining a greater sense of self as a part of an end larger than themselves.” Thank you, Ladan and family, for all of the ways that you contribute to the La Jolla Country Day School community.

The past four years at Country Day have meant the world to me. When I look back on my time at LJCDS, I remember constantly being challenged in ways I never would have been elsewhere but always coming out on top of each and every challenge as a better student, a better person, and most importantly, a better man. REMEMBERING DANAH FAYMAN Danah Fayman, former La Jolla Country Day School board president and mother of faculty member Bruce Fayman, died on June 18, 2017 at her home in San Diego. Danah was 97 years old. She had lived in San Diego for 63 years, and was an active participant in the life of the city and the school. Danah was an extraordinary philanthropist who dedicated her life to many causes, including the San Diego arts community and LJCDS. At LJCDS, Danah served on the Board of Trustees from 1974–1978. In addition to dedicating her time and talents to LJCDS, she was a generous donor to the Fayman Library, the Building on Excellence Campaign and the Country Day Fund. Danah loved LJCDS, and was a loyal advocate for the school. Two of her children attended LJCDS: Corey Fayman ’76 and Bruce Fayman ’77. Grandsons Fritz ’15 and Flynn Fayman ’17 are LJCDS alumni, and granddaughter Faith Fayman is a junior. We are fortunate to have had Danah in our community, and we will remember her with warmth and gratitude.

THE PRITZKER PASSION PRIZE Glen Pritzker was a fervent supporter of students pursuing their passions. Whether at a Torrey sporting event, a school drama production, or mock trial competition, his enthusiasm was palpable and inspiring to generations of students and families. To Glen, the learning outside of the classroom was just as important as what happened inside the classroom. The Pritzker Passion Prize will continue his legacy of mentorship and honor students who are passionate about an area of study, sports, the arts, community service or other activity. The prize will help students pursue a summer program between junior and senior years. Several members of the class of 2018 applied and four students were chosen. Lauren Mikuriya attended the NSLC on international business in Singapore; Jonathan Herman chose the National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security, Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy; Lindsay Newland participated in the California State Summer School for the Arts in the film program; and Danielle Stroh traveled with Global Leadership Adventures: Service Through the Lens. Generous donations have allowed us to endow the Glen Pritzker Memorial Fund to provide opportunities for students year after year.
