Message From the Head of School As I join La Jolla Country Day School as its 12th head of school, I am grateful for the extraordinary generosity of philanthropic supporters, like you, who help to sustain our mission. There are few things in life more rewarding than developing young people into citizens of character who possess the desire to make our community and world a better place. Our society’s enduring legacy will depend upon our ability to develop educated, ethical, innovative and thoughtful leaders who can anticipate and respond effectively to a rapidly changing world. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you and your family. Your financial leadership has made a meaningful difference for our students and our school. This past year, fundraising efforts across campus were led by parent volunteers committed to building a strong culture of philanthropy while raising funds totaling nearly 1.7 million dollars. Vice President of Development Angela Glynn launched the Fab Lab campaign in January with support from Board President Manish Parikh and Interim Head of School Judy Fox. With nearly 60 percent of the fundraising goal completed, we broke ground this summer for a fall unveiling of our new Fab Lab (see page 18). With the leadership of Amy Glass Mischler ’91 (Lower School), Laura Gambs Irvin (Middle School) and Shital Parikh (Upper School), the Country Day Fund enjoyed much success. With 100 percent participation from the Board of Trustees, faculty, board committees and over 65 percent of parents, this community-wide campaign totaled $951,658. Parents Association President Michelle O’Donnell along with a devoted Blue Bash Committee, helped raise over $300,000 in support of financial assistance, faculty professional growth and the school’s endowment. To those who attended and to those who led the efforts for another successful Blue Bash, we offer our heartfelt thanks. Philanthropy is more than a list of names; it is a foundational value. It is what first established this school and what will bring us into the future as a leading educational center in the nation and the world. As you read this report, I hope you will take a moment to pause and to realize that your contribution to our school is a long-term investment in our most precious resource, our children. I am honored to lead La Jolla Country Day School into the future. Please accept our sincerest thanks for your beneficence and support.

Gary Krahn, Ph.D. Head of School

Message From the Director of Development Supporting. Sustaining. Strengthening. Surpassing. Your generous gifts have made all of this possible by providing exceptional opportunities beyond those traditionally supported by our operational budget. You have supported all facets of a Country Day experience for students and faculty alike. Your partnership has attracted and retained the brightest students and best faculty. Thank you. This report recognizes over 1,000 gifts given to Country Day during the 2014–2015 school year. From annual giving to the creation of a new Fab Lab, we thank you for your belief in our work as a school. Your children and grandchildren are the most precious components making up our every day, and it is a privilege to help develop them into caring, thoughtful, bright and competent citizens of the world. It also recognizes, although could never accurately capture, the dozens of volunteers and volunteer hours committed to building a strong culture of philanthropy as a core value at Country Day. Your passion and advocacy reverberates across this campus and will continue to with each new generation of Torreys. Thank you for making a difference.

Sincerely,

Laura E. White, CFRM Director of Development

Country Day Fund Individualized education, individualized opportunity—that is the mark of a Country Day education. The ability for our school to scale to new heights benefits from the generosity and confidence of its community. From the inspirational families who prioritize giving to Country Day to the willingness of parent volunteers to model and cultivate a culture of philanthropy, annual giving bands all Country Day stakeholders together. It is our generous community of Country Day parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and students that enable our school to meet emerging challenges and pilot new initiatives. Thank you for supporting the Country Day Fund.

Unveiling of New Giving Circles in Fall 2016 The generosity of Country Day’s donors is essential to fulfilling the school’s mission. The recognition and honoring of those gifts are just as important. After careful review of the history of philanthropy at Country Day and in alignment with best practices at independent schools across the country, we will be unveiling new Giving Circles that encompass and recognize cumulative charitable gifts on an annual basis. From gifts to the Country Day Fund to Blue Bash sponsorships and more, we are a stronger community when we know we are in it together.

Patsy Armstrong Patsy Armstrong, mother of Anthony ’20, is the co-chair of the annual Parents Association Torrey Fest for the second year. We asked Patsy to share why she chooses to volunteer as well as contribute annually to the Country Day Fund: Country Day is a wonderful community that provides my son with endless opportunities for growth and development. Community and family are important to us and Country Day has provided him that. I began volunteering with the Parents Association (specifically Torrey Fest) because I wanted to make an impact and give back to the school that gives so much to my child. Developing closer relationships with other parents and staff has been very rewarding. I enjoy being able to share my programming skills to ensure our students and families have a wonderful experience. I support the Country Day Fund because I understand every dollar counts. I believe in what Country Day does for my son and every other student. In order for Country Day to continue their commitment to excellence and give our students the best resources and opportunities, we all need to contribute any way we can. Thank you, Patsy, and all of our Country Day families for enriching our community.

Fab Lab: A Space for Innovation This brand new collaborative space allows our students to think together, work as a team and innovate far beyond any one individual can do on his/her own. Our Fab Lab not only provides the technical and design skills necessary for a highly technical workforce but encourages students to see beyond the how and better understand the what and why. We want our students to identify the right problems to solve in order to have an impact on making the world a better place. Alongside the screwdrivers, duct tape, 3D printers and laser cutter, the space is designed to be flexible by having a modular infrastructure of facilities, mobile workstations and a separation of “clean” and “dirty” work. With over 4,000 square feet of writeable wall and a 150-square-foot projection wall, the entire Country Day community can perform activities from brainstorming and ideation to electromechanical prototyping and storytelling. This year, we welcomed a new Director of Design and Innovation, Matt Abbondanzio, who is collaborating with faculty to develop K–12 curricula that focuses on building curiosity, utilizing cutting edge technologies, understanding the social impacts of technology and how to problem solve and design.

Message From the Parents Association President On behalf of the Parents Association, I would like to express gratitude to the Country Day families who shared their time and talent with our school. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. During the 2014–2015 school year, the Parents Association enjoyed many successes, including Torrey Fest, Faculty & Staff Appreciation events, PA meetings with informative guest speakers, WeCare Consortium participation, the Heritage Project, the Book Fair and Blue Bash. Through Blue Bash, Country Day’s annual celebration and fundraising event, your generous donations supported financial assistance and faculty professional growth. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our parent volunteers all year long, the Parents Association was able to enrich the Country Day experience for students and families while maintaining a strong partnership between the school and parents. I encourage you to browse the brand new Parents Community Page on ljcds.org and learn how you can become involved as a parent volunteer at Country Day. Your participation helps to make Country Day the wonderful place it is and gives you a chance to meet other Country Day parents, faculty and staff. Thank you again for your contributions and participation. The PA officers and I look forward to working with all of you in the coming year.

Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation has been a devoted partner of La Jolla Country Day School for 15 years. Reaching further back, Wisteria Cottage in downtown La Jolla, originally owned by the Scripps family, was the site of the Balmer School, now known as La Jolla Country Day School. Ellen and Roger Revelle (grandniece of Ellen Browning Scripps) rented 780 Prospect Avenue to Louise Balmer in 1942 where the school resided before relocating to our current campus in 1961. Since 2002, the foundation has awarded over $181,000 to Country Day in support of programs across campus including the addition of a robotics program in the Lower and Middle schools in 2007 and several library initiatives. This year the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation, led by Executive Director Doug Dawson, awarded Country Day $15,900 for the purchase of new robotics equipment for our fourth grade curriculum as well as the Upper School robotics competitive teams. These funds allow our faculty to expand their program offerings and continue to develop meaningful opportunities to engage more girls in STEM subjects. Thank you to the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation for being an integral part of academic programming for so many years at Country Day. As one of the first women to attend college in the United States, Ellen Browning Scripps completed her studies in Illinois at Knox College in 1858 before relocating to La Jolla, California in 1896. Scripps’ legacy has impacted San Diego residents for over a century. Some of her most significant contributions helped establish institutions such as the San Diego Zoo, Scripps Memorial Hospital, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and La Jolla Public Library.
