BEFORE YOU START We appreciate that the Covid-19 pandemic has presented many challenges, and so we would like to assure our incoming students that we have been working to ensure that all of our students are entering into a safe working environment with access to the resources you need for your studies. Before you begin your course, we want to provide you with a familiar group of peers who will enhance your learning experience over the coming months. We therefore offer one-to-one meetings online with a member of staff and invite you to interact with your fellow students via our LJMU Campus Connect app in the lead up to your start date. We have expanded our digital community and invested in new learning technologies to sufficiently prepare you for the world of work beyond your studies. As our world adapts to frequent changes in public safety measures, we will continue to publish the most up to date guidance for incoming students on our website.

For me, living in student accommodation is a great way to move out for the first time and have your first real taste of independence. All your bills are included, which takes away the hassle, plus you get to meet so many people from different courses and backgrounds. I love the hustle and bustle of being in the city centre; there is always something to do on your doorstep!
MY ADVICE FOR NEW STUDENTS:
1 2 3
Be friendly with your flat mates and share certain foods, bread, salt, etc. so you don’t let food go to waste. Clean as you go - it keeps mess to a minimum and makes your job easier. Don’t suffer in silence - if you are struggling with anything talk to staff or Residential Assistants!

ACCOMMODATION WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BOOKING YOUR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
CONTRACTS
MONEY MATTERS
Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found.
It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford.
Tenancies commence on Saturday 9 January 2021 and finish 50-51 weeks later in December 2021. Teaching begins on Monday 25 January 2021. It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year – e.g. nursing – you can usually extend the tenancy period. Don’t forget that you don’t have to move out over the Easter break, the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year in all cases.
If you have any concerns about money and student accommodation, please contact our Accommodation Office.
accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk
17
MATURE STUDENTS The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations. If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation. Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing January – March 2022 should check ljmu.ac.uk/accommodation to see what options are available.
DISABLED STUDENTS Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. We can also arrange for you to visit our accommodation to check that it will meet your needs. To discuss further contact our Disability Advice Team. disability@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 3164/3165.

We know that a lot of our students want to find paid work while they are studying at LJMU. Our vacancy website can help you find graduate vacancies, sandwich or industrial placements, internships or summer work, part time jobs, volunteering opportunities and work-based learning placements. Over 1000 local and regional

During my time at LJMU I have developed sports leggings which increase the blood circulation in the lower body and gloves which offer extra grip for sporting applications.
With an undergraduate degree in Science from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka and a Diploma in Textiles, Dunila Hettiarachichi won a scholarship to study for his masters in Fashion Innovation and Realisation at LJMU. “My undergraduate degree was in Science but I was working in textile manufacturing so wanted
a qualification to back up my experience. The programme at LJMU was ideal and I loved the fact that the modules were all about experience and practical applications relevant to your career, rather than just writing assignments.”

TRAVELLING TO THE UK TO START YOUR STUDIES Our travel tips should make travelling to the UK a simpler and more enjoyable experience. In this section you’ll find our tips for packing and travelling, as well as three steps you’ll need to follow when you first arrive in the UK. We have included details about our airport pick-up service too. Up to date information on entering the UK should be checked before any travel during this time. The UK government website is a good source of information if you are unsure of the rules and regulations of our borders. www.gov.uk/uk-border-control
WHAT TO PACK AND WHAT NOT TO PACK
luggage, such as toiletries and a change of clothing.
PLANNING YOUR JOURNEY TO LIVERPOOL
OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS:
CLOTHES:
Make sure you bring all the documentation you’ll need to clear immigration and customs. You should also take a photocopy of all important documents, including your passport and immigration documents. Keep the photocopies in your hand luggage.
We offer an airport pick-up service which you’ll need to book in advance – find out more about this service at the following link: ljmu.ac.uk/international/holdingoffer-of-study/when-you-arrive
FOOD:
LUGGAGE: Check the airline’s luggage allowance and only pack as much as you can carry. Make a list of everything you pack, so that if your luggage is lost you can account for any missing items. HAND LUGGAGE: If you are arriving into the UK in January it can feel quite cool. We recommend that you pack a jumper in your hand luggage. In case your luggage is delayed or lost, you should also pack any essential overnight items in your hand
Liverpool’s climate ranges from warm in the Summer to frosty in the Winter. If you come from a very different climate it may be cheaper to buy suitable clothes for the different seasons when you arrive in Liverpool.
It is illegal to bring meat, fish, plants and honey into the UK. Please see the HM Custom and Excise website for prohibited goods. Liverpool has lots of supermarkets selling a variety of foods from all over the world. ELECTRICAL ITEMS: Please ensure all your electrical items are insured while in transit. You will be able to buy adaptors here, but they may be cheaper if you buy them before you travel.
Please check most up to date travel advice for your country before you book your flights, taking into account relevant travel corridors where possible. LJMU continues to monitor and act upon the advice set out by the world health organisation and the local authorities in relation to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Our staff will remain in contact with incoming students to give relevant advice on travel and study arrangements in the lead up to your enrollment date. Our website is refreshed on a regular basis to reflect the most up to date information. Please visit the following link: ljmu.ac.uk/microsites/movingforward/information-for-students/ international-students If you need more information or would like some advice, contact international@ljmu.ac.uk

All our degrees are designed and delivered in a way that best suits the subject being taught, and the knowledge and skills you are expected to develop as part of your studies. During your introduction to your course, your tutors will outline what modules you will be studying for the year ahead and how they will be delivered and assessed. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, there may be changes to the way some courses are delivered. This will be communicated to you throughout your application and enrolment process. We will endeavour to remain flexible in our approach to teaching in order to quickly adapt to changes in government guidelines. Your safety and the quality of your learning experience is our absolute priority.

STARTING AT LJMU You will be expected to complete your student registration online, before you enrol onto your university course. As we navigate the ongoing changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot say for certain what your introduction to the University will look like at this stage. The UK Department for Education recently announced a threelevel system to assist in preventing the rise of coronavirus cases in some areas of England. Levels are set at medium, high and very high risk. The system allows us to plan for any eventuality in the ongoing crisis and we are able to increase or decrease our offering of face to face or online teaching through our own internal alert planning. The region can rise or fall within this system at any time so it is best to check our website for the most up to date information on your expected entry
route and introduction and read your emails regularly. There you will learn more about the current course delivery method and what you can expect from your department. We would like to reassure you that even in a very high category, the city and campus will remain accessible to those who need it the most and the everyday running of local shops and food outlets are mostly unaffected. As a new student, we will ensure that you are up to date with local guidelines and are supported in your induction to your course by both staff and student representatives. We look forward to welcoming you!

The information in this publication is correct at the time of going to press (October 2020). However, along with organisations up and down the country, we are adapting to significant challenges presented by the coronavirus crisis. As a result, we are planning to take an active blended approach to our academic delivery, with a mixture of online and face-to-face teaching to adapt to the restrictions of social distancing whilst these are in place. These restrictions or changes to them may result in parts of an academic programme such as field trips, projects, placements, teaching and assessments that are referenced in this brochure being delivered in a different way (such as teaching and assessments) or not being provided (for example field trips, placements). In addition, some changes will inevitably occur in the interval between publication and the academic year to which the publication relates and the university reserves the right to withdraw or make alterations to the course, modules and facilities if necessary. Applicants should therefore not rely solely on this publication and should use it in conjunction with information provided on our website: www.ljmu.ac.uk The university offers the information contained in this publication as a general guide. It does not constitute or form part of any contract and it is not binding on prospective students, students or the university.
