Whether it’s by train, car, boat or plane, you’ll find Liverpool accessible from almost anywhere.

There are major motorway links to the M62, M57, M58 and M56 and all are within easy reach of the city centre and LJMU itself. Liverpool is well served by public transport too, with a mainline railway station (Liverpool Lime Street) located right in the city centre, less than 10 minutes walk from both our campuses. There’s also a National Express coach station, a ferry terminal and an underground railway. In addition, there are two city centre bus stations, taxis are cheap and plentiful, and, if you need to go over the river, you can always take a ferry ’cross the Mersey.

The City Campus, situated in the heart of Liverpool, is close to some of the city’s most impressive attractions, such as the Walker Art Gallery, Central Library, World Museum and St George’s Hall.

Making the jump into degree-level study can be challenging at first. We can support and help you develop good study habits, giving you the confidence to succeed in your course every step of the way.

LACES OUT FESTIVAL

Laces Out Festival is the biggest event in the calendar for the sneaker heads of Liverpool. Find cool new brands and rare pairs from your favourites in a venue filled with fellow shoe lovers. Keep checking their website to see when the event is next in town.

Such beautiful handmade items deserve an equally beautiful venue, which is why we love Pop-Up at the Palm House markets, held in Sefton Park’s Palm House several times a year. Entry is free and it’s a great excuse to venture outside of the city centre, too.

Faith

We are a multiracial, multicultural city supporting a diverse range of religions and communities. The two cathedrals – Anglican and Roman Catholic – may dominate the skyline but Greek orthodox, Unitarian and numerous European churches can be found across Liverpool.

The mosque at 8 Brougham Terrace was the first to be established in England and the Al Rahma mosque near the city centre holds up to 1,000 people. Liverpool also has a thriving Jewish community and the Princes Road Synagogue is one of the finest buildings in the city. Nigerian, Somalian and Sikh communities are well established, alongside a Hindu temple on Edge Lane and active Buddhist centre in Aigburth.

Beaches green and spaces

Liverpool is well placed to explore some of the North West’s most wild and wonderful locations – all easily accessible by public transport or car. Sefton Park, Calderstones Park and the Wirral Peninsula coastal walk all offer ways to reconnect with nature. If you want to feel the sand between your toes, head to West Kirby, Crosby or Formby beaches.

Sport inthe City

Our passion for football runs deep; with three professional football teams in Merseyside – Liverpool FC, Everton FC and Tranmere Rovers. However, world-class sport in the region goes far beyond football. Merseyside is the golfing capital of England – boasting more than 40 courses, seven of which are leading championship venues, while the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club produces elite, international level athletes. We’re also home to the Grand National, the Liverpool International Horse Show and the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament. In 2022, Liverpool hosted the Gymnastics British Championships.

MUSIC

As the ‘world capital of pop’* it will come as no surprise that a great music scene exists in the city. There’s music to be heard all around Liverpool. No matter what you’re into, there’s plenty going on when it comes to Liverpool’s buzzing festival scene.

Annual festivals include Sound City, Africa Oyé, Homotopia, Brazilica, Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) and Positive Vibration Festival of Reggae – to name just a few! Our city also celebrates diversity, equality and love at the annual Liverpool Pride. Another must is the Light Night city takeover, with breathtaking light shows, art installations, street performances and latenight openings of museums and galleries.

CITY CENTRE

Liverpool city centre, known locally as Town , is like something out of a movie - because it is! From The Batman to Peaky Blinders our streets make for a stunning backdrop, filled with more Grade 1 listed buildings and national museums and galleries than any UK city outside of London. And with a bevvy of bars, shops and restaurants, it’s more than just a pretty face.

BALTIC TRIANGLE

New York has Brooklyn, London has Shoreditch and Liverpool has the Baltic Triangle. Where else can you find iconic street art, incredible music venues, independent coffee shops and breweries, street food and vintage markets AND a golf course inside a warehouse all in one postcode?

ROPEWALKS

In the past, this area was central to Liverpool’s maritime rope manufacturing industry, now the cobbled streets between Duke Street and Bold Street are home to some of the most stylish bars and eateries of the city. This independently minded retail and entertainment quarter is the perfect introduction to Liverpool.

GEORGIAN QUARTER

If you want a cathedral - we’ve got one to spare! Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter is bookended by the two sisters heading up either end of Hope Street, but there’s more to this area than just elegant Georgian architecture. Get lost in its public parks, cram in the culture at its two theatres, or spend a day wining and dining across loads of great places to eat and a traditional English pub scene.

COMMERCIAL DISTRICT

Liverpool’s business district is filled with ornate banking halls, lofty skyscrapers and eyecatching late 19th century office buildings. Got a head for heights? Try dining at one of our penthouse restaurants or hunt out a secret roof garden.

Our iconic Mersey waterfront offers everything from a singalong in The Beatles Story to a picturesque, if a little windy, riverside stroll. Magnificent mercantile architecture like the famous Liver Building is nestled alongside Turner Prize winning contemporary art - try finding more culture and history per square inch

KNOWLEDGE QUARTER

They call the top end of town the Knowledge Quarter. Nestled in beside the University of Liverpool, the walkways that link our two universities are a mix of Victorian gothic and 60s modernism alongside hi-tech new centres of learning. This is where great things happen. 7

Liverpool has a great range of clubs and events orientated towards student life. The nightlife is one of the main attractions of the city. So far, I’ve experienced so many new opportunities and had the chance to meet a lot of new people.

The accommodation is all self-catering, so you’ll have to brush up on your cookery skills before you arrive.

You will face two main expenses when embarking upon a university education – tuition fees and your living expenses . The good news is that you can receive help for both in the form of loans, bursaries or scholarships.

THE FACTS ABOUT WHAT YOUR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION WILL COST AND HOW YOU CAN PAY

n You are charged a tuition fee for every year of your course. Fees for 2025 have not been set yet. In 2024, LJMU fees were set at £9,250* per year for all full-time undergraduate degree programmes.

n You don’t have to pay tuition fees up front–subject to eligibility, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course. This is paid direct to the University.

n You can also take out a maintenance loan to help cover your living expenses such as rent and food. This loan is paid direct to you in three instalments.

n Dependent upon where you live in the UK, you may also qualify for grants for living costs too.

n You don’t start paying back your student loan until you have left university and are earning over the threshold. The current threshold is £25,000** for students from England and Wales and £19,390 for students from Northern Ireland and Scotland.

n Your monthly repayments will be a percentage of your earnings and are not based on how much you borrowed from the Student Loans Company.

The amount of funding you can receive depends on where in the UK you normally live, your household income and if you will be living at home or in other accommodation while you study. For more information visit the following websites:

n You may also be eligible for additional funding that doesn’t have to be paid back, but this depends on your household income.

n LJMU offers a fantastic range of targeted support for students from lower income households plus scholarships for talented and academically gifted students.

n Targeted support is also available for students with disabilities, students with children or students who have been in care or are estranged from their families.

The University reserves the right to increase fees up to the maximum permitted by law or Government policy in the second and subsequent years of your course. Generally, these fee increases are linked to RPIX inflation (Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).

SCHOLARSHIPS

We believe everyone is good at something, and want to reward your success

Every year we award a range of scholarships to support talented students from a range of backgrounds.

Whether it’s a new laptop, help with accommodation costs or learning how to drive – how you spend your scholarship money is up to you.

We don’t just award our scholarships to straight A students either (though academic ability is important); we are also interested in awarding scholarships to students who can show us that they are hardworking, passionate about something and a success at what they do.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Rewards academic excellence (at least 3 A grades at A2 or equivalent – 144 UCAS points) 85 awards available, £1,000 per year for the duration of your course.

SIR BERT MASSIE SCHOLARSHIP

Recognising Sir Bert Massie, national disability rights champion and former student of LJMU. We are looking to award an outstanding disabled student who has campaigned or championed inclusion in some way.

COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

For participation in areas such as volunteering, sports, the arts or citizenship; a maximum of 85 awards of £1,000 per year for the duration of your course.

OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

The aim of the Opportunity Scholarship is to enhance diversity, supporting access, participation and outcomes of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who come to LJMU. It would be expected that applicants have participated fully in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach programmes to be eligible and applicants must meet the black and minority ethnic criteria to apply.

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP

The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship has been introduced to recognise the diverse and inspiring nature of the LJMU student community. These high profile scholarships have been developed to reward the success of students that may have had a different and sometimes longer path into Higher Education or have overcome adversity in some way.

Renewal of scholarships is subject to satisfactory academic progress.

I was awarded the LJMU Community Excellence Scholarship based on my work with arts in the community. I used my videography skills to raise money for charity, making several fundraisers and generally got involved in as much community work within the arts as I could. Don’t hesitate to apply for scholarship - it’s definitely made life easier, it gives you a safety net and just takes some of the pressure off.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications for full-time undergraduate students

To apply to study on a full-time undergraduate course at LJMU you will need to submit an online application through UCAS. The ‘apply’ service at ucas.com allows you to fill in your application anytime, anywhere (please note: there is an application fee for this service and deadlines apply.)

You have the option of choosing up to five courses on your UCAS application. You can apply for just one course or use all five choices; you can also apply for more than one course at any institution.

When we consider your UCAS application, your ability to achieve the entry criteria is just one of the areas we take into account. An important part of the application form is your personal statement, which is your opportunity to tell us more about yourself. You should include your skills, relevant interests and hobbies, along with why you want to study the course. WHEN TO APPLY

You can apply through UCAS for 2025-entry from mid-September 2024. Universities receive applications throughout the year and applications may be considered outside the formal UCAS deadlines through UCAS Extra.

Applying for deferred entry

LJMU is pleased to consider applications for most programmes for deferred entry, however please check prior to submitting your form. You can do this on our course web pages.

Applications for part-time, degree apprenticeships and postgraduate programmes

Applications for part-time, degree apprenticeships and the majority of postgraduate programmes should be made directly to LJMU and we welcome applications throughout the year.

Applications can be made through our online application form. Go to ljmu.ac.uk/courses, select the course you are interested in and then follow the ‘Apply direct’ link.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

At LJMU we welcome applicants with a wide variety of educational qualifications including:

n A/AS levels

Most of the entry requirements detailed within this guide are listed as a UCAS tariff score. If you cannot see your qualification please refer to the UCAS website at ucas.com, contact our Course Enquiries team on 0151 231 5090 or email courses@ljmu.ac.uk and they will be happy to advise you.

Applications from mature students (aged 21+) are guaranteed to be given additional consideration, relating to your relevant academic, professional and life experiences.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

For all our courses there will be a minimum UCAS Tariff score requirement. In addition, many courses will ask for specific subjects at GCSE and/or A level or equivalent. If a GCSE subject is required you will always need at least a Grade C or Grade 4.

To ensure that we are fair and consistent when considering all applications we take a holistic view looking at all aspects of the application including GCSE (or equivalent) grades, references and your personal statement as well as information gained at interviews or auditions. We are aware that not every A level student will have the opportunity to study AS levels and this will be taken into consideration when assessing your application; a fourth subject at AS level is not essential.

As part of LJMU’s commitment to widening access we offer eligible students entry to their chosen course at a reduced threshold of up to 16/8 UCAS points. This applies if you are a student who has been in local authority care or if you have participated in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach initiatives.

APPLICANTS RETURNING TO EDUCATION

For students aged over 21 who have gained substantial knowledge or experience in a particular area, formal qualifications may not be essential.

However, you will have to provide evidence of your ability to study at degree level through an interview or portfolio of work.

What is a TYPICAL OFFER?

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR APPLICATION FORM?

Your application form is sent to us by UCAS and we assess your form on its merits as quickly and efficiently as possible. For some programmes decisions are based entirely on your application form; others will require you to undertake an interview, short assessment test, show your portfolio of work or undertake an audition. Details of additional forms of assessment are included in our entry criteria.

THE OFFER PROCESS

There are a number of offers that we can make you

n An unconditional offerthis will be made if you already satisfy the entrance criteria (i.e. you may be a mature student or already have the results of your examinations).

n A conditional offer - this will be made if you have yet to sit your examinations, and you will be advised of the grades and other criteria we would like you to fulfil.

n A changed course offerif we have read through your application form and think that you would be best suited to a different course, we will contact you to offer you an alternative unconditional or conditional offer for another course. You do not have to accept this offer should you not wish to do so.

APPLICANT EVENTS

Once an offer has been made, we will invite you to a course-specific applicant event, interview or audition where you will have an opportunity to meet current staff and students, see the facilities in more detail, and find out about our student accommodation, either virtually or in person.

MAKING YOUR FIRM AND INSURANCE CHOICES

Once you have received decisions back from all your choices, you will be asked to decide which two offers you wish to accept. You will have to choose which you wish to make ‘Firm’ (your first choice) and which you wish to make ‘Insurance’ (your second choice.)

UCAS EXTRA

If you have applied for all your five choices through UCAS but are not successful in gaining a place or you have declined all the offers you received you will be eligible for UCAS Extra. UCAS Extra runs from February to July.

RECEIVING YOUR RESULTS

You will automatically be accepted if you meet the requirements of your conditional firm (CF) offer with LJMU. If you do not attain the required grades, then we may still accept you on your chosen programme or offer you an alternative programme. If your application is unsuccessful you will then be considered by your ‘insurance’ choice.

CLEARING

Clearing is an additional opportunity to get a place at university, starting a course in September 2025. If you are late to apply, or do not fulfil the conditions of your conditional or unconditional choices, you can then enter the Clearing process. During Clearing you contact universities directly to establish if you can be accepted onto one of their courses. Clearing will take place from July to September.

REQUESTING ACCOMMODATION

Once you have made LJMU your Firm choice with UCAS, you can submit a request for a room in our approved accommodation. The first date that requests can be submitted is usually in Spring but the exact date is published on our website.

ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMMES FOR SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

The LJMU Outreach Team work closely with teachers, career advisors, pupils, parents and communities across Great Britain and Northern Ireland to inspire individuals to pursue a university education. We run live events throughout the year - be they onsite, on campus or virtually, for pre and post 16 education.
