WISHING TO SUPPORT THOSE STRUGGLING WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH IN THE UK, QUALIFIED COUNSELLOR ALI ROBINSON CHOSE TO ENHANCE HER CAREER WITH AN MA IN MENTAL HEALTH AT LJMU.
When deciding what she wanted to do in her future career, Ali decided to return to education as a mature student to further her career prospects and challenge herself to step outside her comfort zone. “I chose a postgraduate qualification ultimately for myself to prove that I could do it, but also to enhance my career prospects in an ever-competitive job market,” she explains. “I felt that the knowledge I would gain through completing the course would complement my current career”.
While studying her masters qualification part-time, Ali worked alongside her studies as a qualified counsellor, putting everything she learnt into practice. Although she had her studies, work and family life to balance, Ali used the support services to make sure that she still got the most out of her time at LJMU.
“Balancing studies with family life is hard, however the tutors have been so amazingly supportive and
I have felt very comfortable about coming forward and asking for help. This has been hugely important in helping me not only manage well but flourish on my course”.
After studying her masters, Ali has found that the opportunities available to her are endless. “Initially, I decided to study the postgraduate course to enhance my counselling career but since being on the course I’ve learned that I could use it for other career paths,” she explains. “Now, I have a lot of choice over my future and career. It’s an exciting position to be in.”
Ali considers the step up to postgraduate study to be a positive decision and urges others in her position to do the same. “You’re never too old to change careers or learn something new. Don’t let fear get in the way of yours dreams and aspirations. I would never in a million years have thought that I’d be in the position I am today with so many amazing opportunities ahead of me”.

LAW GRADUATE CHARLOTTE MORTON HAD NOT EVEN FINISHED HER MASTERS IN MARITIME OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT WHEN SHE SECURED A POST AS PORT OPERATIONS COORDINATOR WITH CMA CGM (UK) LTD.
“I applied for the Port Operations job in June,” recalls Charlotte. “Teaching on my programme had finished and we were all starting to write our dissertations. If I’m honest I was procrastinating a little about my dissertation and so I decided to start applying for jobs.”
Charlotte was familiar with CMA CGM through her masters programme. “We had visited the company for a presentation,” she explains. “I immediately realised it was a really friendly place so, when the job was advertised, I knew I had to apply for it.”
Despite her lack of work experience in the industry, Charlotte felt her interview went well. “As I expected it was a friendly interview but I still didn’t think I would be successful,” she smiles. “When I found out the following day I had got the job I was over the moon and the following week I started work!”
Working first as Port Operations Coordinator and then as Cargo Readiness Assistant on temporary contracts, Charlotte went on to secure a permanent position as a Port Operations Coordinator. “I worked on the UK Feeder vessels ensuring that all export cargo
was loaded on the vessels sailing out of Greenock, Grangemouth, Immingham, Liverpool and Teesport,” she explains. “It was a fascinating job and each day was different.”
Keen to further her understanding of the industry and boost her commercial experience, Charlotte recently accepted a sales role at CMA. She also visited Malmö to attend the WMU Empowering Women in the Maritime Community conference.
“I think it is really important to connect with like-minded people to create change,” says Charlotte. “I listened to so many speakers who really inspired me. It has made me even more determined to work towards a mentoring role. I have received so much help in my career and I now want to help others. I certainly made the right decision to go into the Maritime industry and my masters made that move possible. I don’t think you should ever hold back from trying something so long as you have the capability and knowledge required.”
Charlotte has now continued her academic journey by starting her PhD at the University of Chester this year in Human Vulnerability, while working part time for the Yorkshire Cyber Security Cluster.

WHEN PHD STUDENT MARTINA PIZZOLATO ATTENDED AN ONLINE COURSE IN FACIAL RECONSTRUCTION AT THE END OF HER MASTERS SHE FOUND HERSELF PERUSING AN ACADEMIC CAREER IN ART AND DESIGN.
Martina, originally from Italy, was finishing her dissertation for her masters at Bournemouth University when she attended an online class in facial reconstruction. “I come from a forensic anthropology background and in that field, you learn very little about craniofacial analysis and identification. During my masters, I attended an online course in facial reconstruction and realised that I wanted to be a part of that field”.
After visiting a postgraduate event on campus, Martina met Professor Caroline Wilkinson and was amazed by the facilities available within the School of Art and Design. “The reason why I chose to stay in the UK after my masters was because of the Face Lab. It is a pioneering lab for craniofacial identification and is essential for my course.”
Although she could feel the step up from her masters to PhD, Martina made the most of her experience by attending webinars and online events in the first few weeks of her course. “When I started, I felt a bit lost with all of the information that you receive, but the Doctoral Academy staff were incredible and whenever I had issues or questions, they were always ready to answer straight away,” she explains. “The webinars helped me meet other postgraduates in different faculties and departments so you can create a
connection with people like you that are going through the same things as you. This can make a real difference”.
Throughout her PhD course, Martina made the most of a range of opportunities to gain experience within the field, including some roles within the university itself. “As well as working alongside the rest of the staff in lab projects, I felt that the course that trained me to become a paid demonstrator in the University was such a valuable experience, whether I wanted to stay in academia or not”.
Now, looking towards the future, Martina is hoping to continue along a similar path. “My goal is to have a career in academia in the field of craniofacial identification and become competent in facial reconstruction. I also would love to be able to keep researching the field and hopefully get into teaching”.
After changing her academic focus during her postgraduate journey, Martina urges others to not be scared to do the same. “Do not feel that you have lost time by doing something different to your chosen PhD subject, you will have developed abilities and skills that you can then use during your new postgraduate journey. At the end of the day, the PhD is all about learning and motivation”.

JOSEPHAT LOAMBO HAD NO DIRECT FINANCIAL EXPERIENCE WHEN SHE EMBARKED ON HER MASTERS IN FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. SHE TOOK SECOND PLACE IN THE NATIONAL FINAL OF THE CISI EDUCATIONAL TRUST AWARD SCHEME, HAVING WON HER REGIONAL HEAT AT LJMU.
Josephat graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Business Management before taking an internship back home in the Congo for 12 months. “I was attracted to LJMU by the opportunity to specialise in the financial sector,” she explains. “I found the course a little stressful at first due to my lack of previous knowledge but my confidence soon grew thanks to the support of my tutors and my peers.”
When Josephat was introduced to Bloomberg towards the start of her course she knew that it would be a life-changing experience. “I’ll never forget learning all about Bloomberg and starting to work with investments,” she smiles. “I really enjoyed navigating the system and gaining a better understanding of the market. As I started to see my investments working I came to truly understand that hard work really does pay off and that gave me a real boost.”
Making a profit of £3,000 at the end of the investment period, Josephat then had to present her findings to the assessment team and was chosen as the regional winner. A 400 word essay on ‘Green Finance’ followed before she was named as one of the five top students in the country.
“In the final stage of the competition, I attended an interview at the CISI headquarters in London and then a lunch with the Chairman,” she smiles. “During the lunch I was able to learn about the organisation’s future projects and shared some of my objectives for the coming 12 months. I explained to the CEO how beneficial it would be for the CISI to provide their qualification in Congo. His response was very inspiring and optimistic as he explained they were now providing qualifications in Morocco, in my native language.”
Josephat obviously made a great impression on the CEO and his team as, at the end of the day, she was awarded second place in the competition and received a cheque for £2,000. “It was an amazing day and a fabulous outcome,” smiles Josephat. “It has really set me up for my future career.”
Wanting to work as a Chartered Wealth Manager, Josephat would like to launch her career in the UK. “Long term I want to return to the Congo,” she says. “I need to establish myself first though and would love to stay in Liverpool as I am really happy here. LJMU has set me on the right path for the career I want.”

WITH A DEGREE IN ZOOLOGY AND HERPETOLOGY FROM BANGOR UNIVERSITY, NAOMI DAVIES FOUND HERSELF WORKING IN JOBS UNCONNECTED WITH HER PASSION FOR ANIMALS. A MASTERS IN WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND DRONE APPLICATIONS, HOWEVER, HAS PRETTY MUCH TRANSFORMED HER LIFE.
Animal lover Naomi had no idea what the future held for her when she embarked on her undergraduate degree so decided to study something she loved. “I chose Bangor because it was the only university that offered the reptile focus I was looking for at that time,” she says.
On graduation, Naomi found herself working in a gym and then at a number of car dealerships. “I liked the jobs but they were not what I wanted to do,” she says. “I started looking at the kind of roles I wanted and soon realised I needed a masters.”
Searching for masters courses, Naomi came across the Wildlife Conservation and Drone Applications MSc at LJMU. “It was exactly what I was looking for,” she smiles, “so I was delighted when I was offered a place.”
The highlight of the course for Naomi was the field trip to Tanzania. Surprisingly, however, she decided not to base her dissertation on the trip but to look for something closer to home. Instead, with the help of her Programme Leader and an LJMU PhD student, she designed her project around the density of native bat species in areas of high and low animal populations. Fortunately, the high population area targeted was
Knowsley Safari. “I loved it there from the first time I visited,” she recalls. “When I needed a part-time job whilst writing up my dissertation, it seemed like the obvious place.”
For around 15 months Naomi worked in Knowsley’s education department: guiding tours, giving public engagement talks and generally helping out. “I really needed a full-time job and, although I was offered posts elsewhere, I kept turning them down because I loved it here so much,” she smiles.
Last summer a full-time role was advertised at the Park and Naomi was thrilled to be successful in her interview. “My practical experience was really helpful in getting the job” she recalls, “it has been invaluable since starting in this role, showing how important it is to get relevant experience in the field you are hoping to work in.”
Naomi still can’t imagine ever working elsewhere. “This really is my dream,” she beams. However, after a few years within her role, she has now applied to complete her Doctor of Philosophy in Conservation Technology back at LJMU in Conservation Technology alongside her role.

WHEN 34 YEAR-OLD RICHARD KIRWAN SAW A PHD STUDY ADVERTISED AT LJMU HE COULDN’T BELIEVE HIS LUCK. THE GLOBE-TROTTING NUTRITIONIST FROM WATERFORD WAS OVERWHELMED THAT AN OPPORTUNITY SO IDEALLY SUITED TO HIS EXPERIENCE HAD BECOME AVAILABLE JUST AS HE WAS LOOKING TO START HIS DOCTORATE.
Richard originally studied Biological Sciences with Microbiology at University College Cork. Life after graduation was a globetrotter’s dream with time spent teaching English in Japan, working at the Japanese embassy in Ireland and translating and teaching in Colombia.
In 2014 Richard decided to return to his passion for nutrition. “I wanted to study for a masters and, to maintain my proficiency in Spanish, I decided to go to university in Barcelona,” he explains.
After his masters, Richard worked as a freelance Nutritionist specialising in weight loss and muscle gain. “I soon realised what was missing for me was the teaching element,” he says. “I decided to look for a PhD opportunity with a view to moving into academia.”
Exploring many different options, Richard knew LJMU was the place for him as soon as he saw the ad for a PhD in Nutrition. “It was just as if it had been tailor-made for me,” he smiles.
“I contacted the Supervisor and told them how keen I was and asked what I could do to ensure my enthusiasm was reflected in my application.”
Richard’s experience and approach paid off and he was successful in his application. “The PhD really
encompasses everything I am interested in,” he explains. “It covers: protein metabolism and how it applies to health as we age; the Mediterranean diet and exercise and nutritional strategies to improve the quality of life in an aging population.”
Richard started his PhD in October 2018. “I really like the independence that comes with PhD study,” he smiles. “There is probably a little more to do than I expected but I am loving building up the relationships with the organisations I am going to work with.”
As to the future, Richard would like to take on a Postdoctoral study and move into research and lecturing. So what advice would he give to others who are considering a PhD? “Just make sure you are studying something you are passionate about,” he says. “You will spend at least three years of your life consumed by your topic and motivation is not easy to maintain without passion. I really couldn’t be happier with my PhD. I am studying a subject I am hugely passionate about and am very excited about the future.”
Richard has now taken up a role at Leeds Beckett University as a research officer.
