The Grapevine - Summer 2018
Update from Cllr Emily Durrant It has been a really busy few months in our ward and at the Council. I’m sure you have noticed the new footway scheme in Llangorse, which will soon be extended to the end of the village. Speed calming in the form of a chicane will also be installed on the approach to the village from Bwlch end. Residents in Llangorse and anyone regularly travelling through will be relieved to hear that we are expecting a much-needed new road surface through Llangorse village in the next few months. The downside is that there will be disruption to traffic so be prepared. I know that Highways are trying really hard to keep it outside of our busiest periods. In March, Full Council passed a motion that I proposed, to promote Powys as a major plastic reducer and put a strategy together for plastics throughout the Council. Since then, the canteens in County Hall and Brecon have already made improvements, such as providing reusable drinks cups for sale – and these are selling out fast! There is still a long way to go and I am meeting with the waste team to keep pushing this forward. The AGM in May saw my reappointment to the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and new appointments to the Employment and Appeals Committee and Audit Committee. I concluded my work on Scrutiny Committee A, which has been working hard to drive improvements in our Adult Social Care provision for the past 12 months. There are currently several consultations live and I am particularly concerned about the proposed changes to Blue Badge parking in Powys car parks and home to school transport. We need to save money but there are better ways than these, both of which I see as offsetting costs onto already struggling families and
Cllr Emily Durrant those least able to deal with the consequences and be heard. I am making my views clear responses to the consultations and I recommend that you do the same if this is something you feel is important. Unfortunately the Blue Badge Consultation closes on 2nd July and this newsletter is due for circulation on 1st July, so I am trying to spread the news in other ways. You still have time to respond to the home to school transport consultation, which may mean significant changes in our ward. For example, it is unclear if most residents in our ward will have access transport to Gwernyfed High School, as Brecon is closer. Furthermore, Llangorse Primary pupils who currently get on the bus in Llanfihangel Talyllyn will no longer be able to access the service if the proposals go ahead. There are also implications for post-16 pupils which are a bit more complicated depending on where they study. You can respond here: http://www.powys.gov.uk/en/corporate/find-out-aboutconsultations-in-powys/revised-school-transport-policy/ On other local matters, I have initiated two groups who are working on development of a village shop and community transport scheme. If you are interested in either of these then please do get in touch as we need as much help as we can get. Our next community shop meeting is on the 9th July in the Castle Inn at 7.30pm. Please RSVP if you can make it to the details below. Lastly, you may have seen in the news that I formed a new Political Group with the Welsh Liberal Democrats, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Green Group, in May. The Lib Dems have offered me a huge amount of support over the past year and we find ourselves aligned on most issues. It has been incredibly productive, useful and enjoyable working with them already and I look forward to achieving improvements for Powys with them over the next four years. I am available for advice and information on 07976 928 077 or cllr.emily.durrant@powys.gov.uk .
Defibrillator for Llangorse Sailing Club A new defibrillator will soon be in place at Llangorse Sailing Club for use should anybody need assistance whilst they are at the club, the campsite or taking part in any activities nearby. The British Heart Foundation part-funded the equipment with the remaining £600 coming from the annual Llangorse Big Swim. The sailing club will provide the cabinet and the kit will be mounted on the outside of the clubhouse building so that it can be accessed at all times. During last year's swim a competitor was taken seriously ill and was resuscitated by volunteer paramedics who were marshalling and the professional first aid team who were on site for the event. A defibrillator was on site and the defibrillator stored at
Nicola Goodwin
the village hall was also brought down in case it was needed. The swimmer underwent extensive tests following the incident and has since been found to have a previously undiagnosed heart condition. She is having treatment and hopes to return to Llangorse next year to continue her swim and to thank the volunteers who saved her life. This year's Big Swim will take place on Saturday September 15th at 2pm. Once again the event will be raising funds for the sailing club and local sports clubs. Local swimmers are most welcome please contact llangorsetri@hotmail.co.uk for more information and a discount code for locally based swimmers.
As well as the new unit soon to be in place at Llangorse Sailing Club, Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) can be found at: Llangasty Village Hall, Pennorth Chapel, Llanfihangel Talyllyn Village Hall, Llangors Village Hall, Llangorse Multi Activity Centre and The New Inn, Bwlch

The Mysteries – What a Wonderful Day!
Lynn Clausen
Diolch yn fawr! A huge thank you to all – to all on-stage, off-stage and to a superb audience! As a group, we were overwhelmed with the unstinting support we had for our first Llangorse Community Performance Project outing with ‘The Wakefield Mysteries’ which took place with two performances on Saturday 28th April at the Llangorse Youth & Community Centre. This couldn’t have happened without the support of our cast, but also in the background – wardrobe, refreshments, our chaperones looking after our younger cast… We also raised £900 proceeds (as well as creating resources for the venue), which exceeded all our expectations – and these have gone to the Youth & Community Centre with a little earmarked for future productions. Donations were also made to Llanfihangel Talyllyn Community Hall and to the fund-raising event which took place at Llanwern, in aid of local Parish churches, over the weekend 16th and 17th June 2018.
Some feedback We were joined for the afternoon first performance by Kirsty Williams AM: "I thoroughly enjoyed watching the performance. It’s wonderful to see the community come together young and old to perform the play. I hope that I will have the opportunity to see future performances." In a letter received from and on behalf of the Llangorse Youth and Community Centre, Melrose East wrote: "It brought the whole community of Llangors, and beyond, together in a way that I have not seen for a very long time… We need things like this to bring communities together and put a smile on people’s faces! Congratulations on a magnificent production."
Here are some testimonials from the cast (we were a cast of almost 40 all told!): "Taking part in the Mysteries was a great way for me as a 'new Llangorse resident' to get to know lots of the community folk, young and old together.." Chris Demanuel (Angel)
"I was surprised by how much fun it turned out to be… It was an all-age production and lovely to have the children so engaged and I feel it was particularly rewarding for everyone who took part. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone of any age to take part in next time – it did me the power of good." Gareth Jones (Lucifer / God / shepherd) "I’ve made good friends and got to know people in my local community. Can’t wait until we all get together again and work on our next show!" Sue Phair (Eve / tap dancing chorus member / John the Baptist / Gill / Joseph…) "Absolutely humbled by the children in the cast. Their eagerness and excitement was overwhelming and their presence always a pleasure... Sign up us oldies for the next play cos’ we can’t wait to be in their gang again." Noah & Uxor alias Laurence & Rose Snowden "[Lynn] wanted it to be a community project and it certainly was. So good to meet more local people and make new friends." Sheena Sheppard (Pilate / Shepherd)
FOCUS and HOPES: Our focus was to create a community project drawing together people from all walks of life. We certainly succeeded here! We hoped to celebrate our community spaces as well as meet new people, forge new friendships and broaden our community network even further. NEXT STEPS: To write our own! A collective community writing group plans to start up later this year, in September. We will be looking at creating a script chronicling the history of our lake communities. Get in touch with Lynn if you could like to get involved in any way! Open to all. Lynn: 07949 329 561 Email: lynn.clausen@btinternet.com Web: www.ravendrama.com Facebook: www.facebook/ravendramawales

The Grapevine - Summer 2018
Llangors Community Council Update Annual Public Meeting: Following our well attended Annual Public Meeting on 15th May, we thank community members for attending and participating in the many discussions and for completing the Welsh Government survey being carried out by the Independent Review Panel on Community & Town Councils. All the forms received have been collated and returned to Welsh Government, the data will allow Welsh Government to consider the future role of Community & Town Councils. As a Community Council we hope to meet soon with Llangors School Governors to discuss continued use of Llangors Playing Field. As agreed at our APM, we will be keeping our community updated with our progress.
Broadband was a topic which prompted strong dissatisfaction
at the APM. We thank Lee Pullen for attending our APM and providing his input and expert local knowledge on the matter. We hope that the next phase of broadband infrastructure shortly to be announced by Welsh Government will be of benefit to our area. We will continue to monitor and campaign for broadband speeds to be improved in our community.
Highways: Recently Powys have been carrying out some minor road repairs in our area. However highway matters and particularly the state of our roads are always a concern, with progress generally slow on highway matters raised with PCC. We will continue to monitor and appreciate any reports that community members have regarding highway defects.
Vehicular Speeding in our Villages: Under the guidance of
Dyfed Powys Police, having a Community Speed Watch team appears the way forward with monitoring, recording and helping reduce speeds locally. We will continue to highlight
Colin Preece, Chair
unsafe speed outside our 30mph limits, but if residents want to be involved and organise Speed Watch in Llangors or Llanfihangel Talyllyn, please contact County Cllr Emily Durrant. The Community Council thanks those already actively involved.
Home to School Transport policy: Powys County Council
Consultation until 20/7/18: anyone currently using school transport or hoping to in the future should read this important document, it is available on the Powys County Council webpage: powys.gov.uk/consultations. Please consider which schools are the “catchment school” and the “nearest geographical school” from your home address and be sure you understand how the policy may affect you at different stages of your child’s education. Please respond directly to Powys County Council with any objections. For further information contact County Cllr Emily Durrant or Community Clerk Judith Phillips, if you are unsure about anything, prior to 10th July 2018.
Brecknock Play Network will again be running an open access
play session at the Glebe Community Field on 13th August 2pm - 4pm which they are able to provide thanks to funding from the fantastic Co-op community fund. This will include the opportunity for lots of types of play including den building, dressing up, circus, sports, giant bubbles, gloop plus lots more. The session is free and for all children (those under 8 must be supervised by an adult/carer).

History talk Thursday July 5th at Llangasty Village Hall. Alan Jenkins will be telling us all about the Crawshay Baileys, iron works owners. Starts 7pm to be followed by a cheese/ ham ploughmans with a drink for £5 to be ordered in advance. This is always a popular summer event! Progress on the refurbishment of the Talyllyn phone kiosk is progressing really well. Painting of the kiosk is complete and the footings for the memory bench is now in place. We hope to install both the bench and the planter very soon and put up the “Talyllyn” sign. John Dixon is busy preparing the graphic displays for installing inside the kiosk and we hope that by the next edition of the Grapevine everything is up and running. The Brecknock History Festival will take place in the first couple of weeks of September. The theme of the event is on “notable people”. We would like to set up a display describing people from around the lake who have made a significant contribution to the lives of others in the past. Can you help? If you have any suggestions or information that we could use please get in touch. We intend displaying our material at Pennorth Chapel`s “Open Day” on September 15th. Tel. 01874 658726

Llangorse Common Community Toilets There is excitement in the air! A sub-group of Discover Llangorse & Bwlch has decided that action is needed to enhance the toilet facilities at Llangorse Common. Powys County Council has relinquished all responsibility for financing the running costs of the existing toilet block, and the sub-group has taken on the challenge of keeping the facility open for visitors and equally importantly the local community. Instead of simply refurbishing the existing building, the bold decision has been taken to rebuild it completely, providing a new, energy efficient building comprising two unisex toilets, a disabled toilet and a dog wash! An area for visitor information will also be available. An initial grant of £28,000 has been generously awarded by Visit Wales / Welsh Government through the helpful efforts of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. This is an 80% grant so we have to raise £7,000 to make this happen. We have plans to achieve this but we need all the help we can get to achieve our aim of creating a unique, sustainable and attractive facility for the benefit of all. Let’s face it – on a visit to Llangorse Common, what is perhaps the most important need? Answer – welcoming toilet facilities for visitors and the local community!
Jim Price
The working group has recently achieved charitable status. “Llangorse Common Community Toilets”, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) has been set up to oversee the redevelopment and operate the new toilets going forward. Four local people have volunteered to be trustees. The group are currently working with Powys County Council to lease the site as a Community Asset Transfer (CAT). An architect and project manager are also being appointed. Fundraising is already underway; donations have been received from businesses operating around Llangorse Common (thank you!), and a donation box has been placed on the existing toilet building. Upon opening, the new toilets will be coin operated to assist with ongoing running costs. Further support will be needed to enable the new building to be completed by Autumn 2019. The working group already has several ideas for fundraising, however any ideas from Grapevine readers would be welcomed. Project progress will be reported in future Grapevine newsletters, so watch this space! Contact: Jim Price, for Llangorse Common Community Toilets, tel. 01874 658 616
Llangors Play and Recreation Park Project The committee of Llangors Youth and Community Centre have secured a 25 year lease from Powys County Council for a portion of ground situated on the old site of Llangors Church in Wales School. We are very grateful to the School Governing Body for agreeing to this, although we are waiting to hear where the exact boundary will be. This area will be developed for use by the community as a play and recreation park, providing something for all age groups including benches, patio, picnic tables, flower/ veg beds as well as play and exercise equipment. Following last year’s questionnaires that were completed by users of the existing playground and residents of Llangors, we now have a good idea about what people want. The children in Llangors Church in Wales School also completed a small project identifying the type of play equipment they would like. As Chair of Llangors Youth and Community Centre, I would like to take this project forward with the help of committee members Lynn Clausen and Ailsa Dunn. I would, however, like to set up a local group of interested adults and children who would like to help plan this exciting park. Please contact me if you
Melrose East
would be interested in being part of such a group. I am also looking for anyone with skills such as landscaping/gardening, carpentry, building, fencing, general labouring, fundraising etc, etc. We realise that this will cost a lot of money and have already undertaken a number of fundraising activities and received some generous donations. At a recent Pig Racing Night in the Castle Inn a staggering £1,350 was raised during one evening of great fun! Thanks to Mike and Michelle for their generosity. We recently received a £500 cheque from Brecon Rotary Club. We have also had donations from Llangors Cubs (£500), Sri Lanka curry evening (£1,000), Castle Inn Llangors (£175), coffee morning (£185), Mary Anderson (£20). We have other activities planned. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide a really useful facility in the middle of the village to bring everyone together and enjoy. Please contact Melrose East if you are interested in supporting this project. Email: melrosemeast@gmail.com or telephone: 01874 658 335

Yes, Autumn is still a long way away but our Harvest Supper has now been fixed for Friday 28th September. Further reminders will be circulated in August but we can confirm that entertainment will be provided by a local ukulele band. Tickets will be priced at £10 for adults and children under 16 will be free. Ongoing maintenance work will focus on the outside of the hall with repairs to the rendering, and other areas of potential water ingress. We will also be making some improvements to the car parking space with the intention of creating a designated disabled parking bay. We are grateful for the work Glyn Price is doing to keep the area around the hall neat and tidy which is much appreciated by those who use the hall. If you would be interested in helping out with the running of the hall do please get in touch - 01874 658726.

Bwlch Village Hall - News
Lesley Doggett
If you weren’t there you missed a real treat at Bwlch Village Hall on Friday 8th June! As part of 2018 Bwlchfest Celebrations, the Bingo and Curry Evening was a huge success: delicious home made curries and accompaniments cooked by local chef Charlotte Roskill; bingo with with record prize money and excellent company! We hope to repeat this event in the Autumn when an exclusive Bingo Billy T Shirt will be presented to the winner of the final Full House! The fun continued on 29th June with Hired Gun and local supporting singer songwriter Kirsty. Plans are also afoot for fundraising events to secure the land next to the hall as a car park, community garden and picnic area. A “pamper day” comprising reflexology, hair, nails, skin care treatments and general well-being is being organised so watch out for poster news of this event! A gentle reminder that we hold our Family Discos at least twice a year and would love to see many more children from Bwlch enjoying these! After another successful Bwlch with Altitude event the Bwlch with Altitude Committee is also planning a “ New Look Event” for 2019 with walks and cycling as usual but expanding into wellbeing and mindfulness events to appeal to a wider age and interest range. Don’t be fooled by the wonderful Summer weather we’re having! Christmas and our Annual Bwlchfestive Celebrations are coming! This year as well as musical entertainment and our very popular Christmas Bazaar we will be putting on a Pantomime with a Pirate theme! We will be featuring one or two extra special guests for cameo appearances and without giving too many secrets away, do the names “Depp and Craig” ring any bells?! We look forward to welcoming you and your families at our forthcoming events.

Community Transport Scheme Needs Your Input
Cllr Emily Durrant
Llangors residents, Jayne Woolford and Cllr Emily Durrant, are beginning work on a Community Transport Scheme. We are in the early stages and need your help to ensure that we design the right scheme for our community. Our initial plans are to develop a scheme that can collect people from our ward and transport them to Talgarth, Bwlch and Brecon, where they can connect to existing transport services, if needed. We would like a regular service that provides for local need but is also available for tourists, with a view to boost visitors to our wonderful area and give holiday accommodation another way to bring people in. Similar schemes are successful elsewhere. If you are a business or resident interested in community transport, please get in touch by emailing communitytransportllangorse@outlook.com. We need you!
• Dec 10th - Gwernyfed Junior Rugby Someone is often there representing the charity / good cause and will tell us a little about it. We have a list of further causes to raise funds. If you support or benefit from a charity / good cause and want a coffee morning to raise funds for that, please mention it, and come along and help. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Calibre Audio Library - the freedom to read
Lizzie Goodrich
Calibre Audio Library is a national charity funded largely by voluntary donations and legacies. The library offers a subscription free service to anyone who cannot see well enough to read a print book or who has dyslexia - or any other disability that prevents the reading of print. For a one off fee of £35 for an adult or £20 for a young person under 16, you can receive a regular supply of books for as long as you wish. Postage is free and there is no charge if books are overdue, lost or damaged. Calibre was founded in 1974 by three ladies who recorded books onto cassettes in a kitchen. By the end of the 70s Calibre had 600 titles and was sending out 30 books a day. Today, Calibre offers 10,000 titles and has a membership of 16,000 from all over the UK and beyond. Over 1750 books are sent out each day - 1 every 18 seconds - and as many are returned. Some of these go straight out to readers without even touching the shelves. In 2017 the library added 732 book titles to its list with 293 of these being recorded by Calibre’s 80 or so volunteer readers. There is now the option to listen to the books on mobile phones and tablets via the new specially designed App or by USB memory sticks or MP3 CDs. In memory of my father who was losing his sight as a result of diabetes, I was inspired to submit my voice audition to Calibre when I retired. I was accepted and have been a volunteer reader ever since. There will be a coffee morning in support of the Calibre Audio Library in the Village Hall in Llangors on Monday 13th August. All are very welcome. Meanwhile, if you would like to learn more their website is www.calibre.org

Coffee Morning in aid of Brecon to Hay Cycle Path
Freya Morgan
Please join us for coffee and cake from 10am on Monday 10th September in Llangorse Community Centre. We will be raising funds towards an accessible cycle and walking path between Brecon and Hay for the benefit of residents and tourists. We are committed to creating a traffic-free route that families and inexperienced cyclists can use for leisure and daily journeys, that will also be available to pedestrians and those with mobility issues. The project hopes to promote safe, ecological and sustainable travel and tourism in the area. Come and find out more about the plans and help the future well-being of the community.
What is "City Farms and Community Gardens"?
Susan Jevons
The coffee morning on October 8th is to support this movement, but what is it ? If you have a place to grow flowers, vegetables, raise animals, and do so, you will know what the experience can give you: achievement, fresh air, a hand in creating, a place to work out your balance inside yourself, a place to share with others, rehabilitation, sense of continuity and belonging, pleasure, learning, surprise, challenge, and yes, failure too. And the list goes on and on! However, many people do not have access to such places.. Now, across the country, people have shared gardens, reclaimed abandoned land for the community, shared allotments, developed miniature "farms" and with it found personal and community benefit. Finding money to gain these sites, and make and keep them accessible and sustainable is, like in so many other cases, an uphill task. Our nearest well-established example is in Merthyr, although Talgarth is feeling it's way towards a similar idea. The Amelia Trust near Cardiff is another example, look it up - it's a fascinating and exciting place!

Gardens to visit The Piet Oudolf garden at Hauser and Wirth, Bruton, and the Harold Peto garden at Iford Manor, are both near Bath and very different to one another. telephone: 01874 730 169
P L A N T N U R S E RY The former is a relatively recent planting in the New Perennial style with an emphasis on grasses late on in the season and minimal maintenance. There are some amazing plants and planting combinations here and the garden is fascinating to visit for inspiration in any month of the year. In stark contrast the Italianate gardens at Iford Manor are hidden deep in a damp valley. There are chapels, grottoes, steps, running water and old stone terraces, traditional plants and striking new finds. I saw Lobelia x speciosa “Vedrariensis” here last year and just had to grow it immediately. It is a strong upright plant with deep purple flower racemes late summer and autumn.
