Llangorse Primary School - Open Day

Sunday 4th March 2018, 2pm to 4pm The pupils and teachers of Llangorse Church in Wales Primary School officially moved into the new school on Monday 19th February. The new school will be open to the community, and past and present pupils and friends on Sunday 4th March 2018 from 2p.m. until 4p.m. There will be a display of pupils' craft items for the St David's Day Eisteddfod and all are welcome to look around the school. Unfortunately the grounds will be out of action due to the ongoing works to demolish the old school. Although staff and pupils are delighted with the new school we are very sad to see the end of the old school. We have very fond memories of being there - most staff having taught there for around 30 years. We look forward to welcoming you all on the 4th March!

The committee are very grateful to Willmott Dixon for supplying and fitting new vinyl flooring in the committee room of the Community Centre. They will also make other improvements to the surrounding area of the Community Centre. This is the legacy that Willmott Dixon have agreed to provide for the community. Thanks are extended to Lee Walters and Kimberley Sweet-Walters from Willmott Dixon who have regularly attended the coffee mornings in the Community Centre and provided updates on the new school building and answering all questions and concerns. The committee would like to wish the children and teachers all the best in the new Llangors Church in Wales Primary School.
Bwlch With Altitude – Saturday 2nd June 2018

Bwlch with Altitude is a popular, family friendly navigation challenge held annually in Llangorse & Bwlch (since 2009). The challenge can be conducted either by foot or on your mountain bikes, and it is a team event (minimum 2; maximum 8 members per team). Whilst navigating the routes, your team will have a quiz sheet to fill in, digital checkpoints to collect, photographs to take, and marshalls to say hello to! There are prizes galore... all kindly donated by local businesses. The challenge starts with check-in, safety briefing and refreshments at Bwlch Village Hall.
Every year there are 3 options to choose from: • A 15 mile circular mountain bike route – ideal training for MTB challenges such as the Brecon Beast. Our route requires entrants to have some experience – it contains steep ascents/descents over rough terrain, and riders must wear a safety helmet. • A 12 mile circular walk – ideal training for WAAT4 and similar challenges, or just a really good day out in the hills with your mates! • A 5 mile circular walk – ideal for families of all ages. Cor Saffadon Celebrate their 3rd Anniversary

Cor Saffadon the local choir, that meet every Wednesday, have been together now for over 3 years. The choir was started by Margaret Jones following a successful concert that took place in the village hall at Llanfihangel Talyllyn. The concert featured local residents performing a variety of acts to a “sell out” audience. The group of ladies presented their version of “Sister Act”. Following this a few of the girls decided that they had so much fun rehearsing and singing that they should continue to meet and form a singing group. Over the years the number of members has grown and now eleven meet on weekly basis at the Black Cock Inn Llanfihangel Talyllyn for singing followed by tea cakes/biscuits. Over the three years the Choir, have been together, they have performed at Brookside and Trenewydd homes, Churches in Llangors, Llanfihangel Talyllyn and Pennorth Chapel. The Black Cock Inn is always a home venue and the choir have enjoyed singing at the functions arranged by the Garrett family and ladies of Llanfihangel. Some of their highlights were to be asked to entertain diners at the Llangasty harvest supper and to sing with members of the Ebbw Vale Male Choir on their frequent visits to the “pub”. Not only do the members meet for rehearsals they “get together” socially and enjoy dining out on special occasions. The choir are always happy to welcome new members and visitors to their rehearsals which take place at the Black Cock Inn 2pm every Wednesday or for further information contact Margaret on 01874 658 477.

Go sailing! The sailing club is on your doorstep: many do not know what a great asset it really is. We talk to Peter Thomas from the club – and find out more. “Llangorse Lake offers the best facilities for sailing in the country: safe, expert instructors and first-class facilities including a new clubhouse and a great family atmosphere. But, best of all it’s on our doorstep.” Peter Thomas, is the Commodore. It sounds very grand, but he’s one of the many volunteers who manage the club – and it’s his turn at the helm, this year. “Of course, I would make these heady claims,” Peter says. “But actually they’re all true. Recently, Llangorse Peter Thomas Sailing Club was a runner up in the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) Club of the Year Award. We’d like to have won that,” says Peter; “But we’re proud that we’re compared with the best professionally-run clubs in the UK. We have all the benefits of great facilities and a professional approach – without the high costs!” In the past decade the club has twice won Powys County Council’s equivalent award. A high-point for the club has been the explosion of kids’ sailing in the past couple of years. “We have over 40 children here regularly – and they’re forming the best-part of the national sailing squads.” Peter continues, “We’re lucky to have a former Olympic Squad sailor leading our children’s coaching and also one of Wales’s national coaches too. It’s frightening just how strong our kids are at this sport – but the important point is that they’re local kids taking advantage of something very special on their doorstep.” Peter adds, “Whether they’re in the squads or not, they’re having a lot of good, clean and educational fun – and learning one of those life-skills that they can always turn to as grown-ups.” “The club’s not just all about the kids,” Peter Thomas continues. “We’ve been going for over 60 years now, and have a great tradition as the home for some elite sailors – some who return from national championships with the silverware.” “But the majority of us simply love messing about in boats – and sharing the joy with others.” Peter says, “Most of us strolled into the club-site and thought – I’ve simply got to give it a go!” Newcomers are very welcome, “We run open days – free of charge – to introduce people of any age and ability - to the joy of sailing. Training courses are fully endorsed by the RYA as the club is a Recognised

Peter continues, “We’re always looking to improve our facilities here. We’re a modest club run entirely by volunteers, but we’ve carried out some major projects to make the experience here ever better. We’ve installed superb launch and landing-facilities and the long jetty is an important resource. Just a couple of years ago we built the new clubhouse. This includes our training-room and the balcony commands the best views of the lake. The clubhouse also boasts professional catering facilities – and we use these for events throughout the year.” Peter Thomas concludes, “Llangorse Sailing Club sits alongside many fantastic amenities in the area, adding to the joys of living in the Beacons. A fleet of sailing boats is a beautiful sight and the skill of sailing is available to us all. Why wouldn’t you want to be part of it?

It was pleasing to see over 30 attending our first talk of the year given by Ann Reese relating the experiences of soldiers written in their own words. A variety of campaigns was covered including the Anglo Zulu war, Gallipoli, the far east and First World War.The talk vividly illustrated the hardship and deprivation experienced by soldiers even when not in battle. Next Talk, Thursday April 19th at Llangors and Youth Community Hall. 7.30 start. Author and photographer Phil Scope will be talking about the “ Living Wells Project” which is run by Keep Wales Tidy. Phil has considerable knowledge of Holy Wells and will be showing and describing examples of wells from the Brecon area and fom around Wales We are delighted that the Brecon Beacons National Park authority has awarded a considerable grant towards the conversion of the Talyllyn Phone kiosk into a local history information point. A small group of Talyllyn residents have been busy giving the kiosk a rub down and new coat of BT red paint ready for when the internal work begins in late spring. Talyllyn based graphic designer Jon Dixon has drawn up some exciting designs for the display and we have no doubt that the kiosk will be an informative local asset. The kiosk will be accompanied by a bench and a planter. Attached to the bench will be a small box containing a notebook for anyone, local or just passing, to record any memories about the Llangors area. These will then be recorded in the history groups archive. We are grateful to local residents for supporting this venture. Our website is now live and can be accessed by keying in history www.llangorsehistory.org. There is currently limited information on the site but a small team of members is adding material on a regular basis. We are extremely grateful to Sam Bryan from Talyllyn for generously giving his expertise and time in setting this up for our group.
The Mysteries – they are happening and are on the way!

HOORAY! Our community performance project is well and truly underway! The schedule is in place. Parts are cast. Lines are being learnt. Costumes are being created– and they are looking simply wonderful!
WHAT: A modern stage production of the medieval mystery-cycle (Adrian Henri’s ‘The Wakefield Mysteries’) We are all thoroughly enjoying putting together this collaborative event which will involve plenty of comedy while being balanced out by more thought-provoking scenes. Those involved - on-stage and off - are drawn from across our community and across the age ranges too – it really is a shared project!
WHEN: To whet your appetite, there will be open rehearsal performances taking place early April at both Llangorse Church and Llanfihangel Church. Dates TBC.
These will be followed by two performances which will run on Saturday 28th April at Llangorse Youth and Community Centre. 2pm and 7pm.

CPR and defibrillator training will be held at the hall on Tuesday 13th March between 7 and 9pm. This will be an informal session, the purpose to be familiar with when and how to use the defibrillator and how to conduct CPR. Members of the hall committee who are trained first aiders will be there to guide and answer questions and we will have available the resuscitation dolls to practice on. This is a great way to build up your confidence and experience in basic life saving skills. As our Festive Walk proved so popular with young and old alike we have decided to organise another to coincide with the summer solstice. The walk up the Allt would take place on Friday 22nd June to be followed by a BBQ. There will be a treasure hunt quiz for the youngsters ( and the young at heart ). Further details will be circulated closer to the date. If there is a local musician who would be interested in performing in the evening to round the event off please get in touch. On Thursday 5th July the hall be be hosting the Llyn Syfaddan History Group talk given by Alan Jenkins on the subject of the Crawshay Baileys, iron work owners, who had strong connections with Llangors area. The talk will be followed by a ploughmans and refreshments in support of the hall maintenance fund. After many years of tireless work on the hall committee Elaine Sweet has decided to step down. Along with a small number of other local community members Elaine has played a big part in keeping the hall going though thick and thin. Even when Elaine moved to Brecon she still actively supported the hall. Whilst Elaine will be focussing on more Brecon based activities she will still be attending the hall through her WI commitments so the link will still be maintained. A big thanks to Elaine for her contribution. The hall is a community asset run by a committee of volunteers without whom it would simply cease to run. It is in a beautiful spot, overlooking Llangors lake and retains all its original Arts and Crafts features. If you would like to be involved in supporting the hall please consider joining our committee. Experience not required just a willingness to muck in and be part of an enthusiastic team!

For the first time in many years we had to postpone a Service because of the weather, that Service had to be our ever popular Christmas Carol Service, luckily the following Sunday the weather was much kinder, and by word of mouth and modern media we managed to nearly fill The Chapel for a delightful Service. Again this year we were able to bring in an element of Welsh to the Service with two welsh students telling the Christmas story in Welsh and followed by the congregation singing a carol in Welsh. The Service was followed by tea/ coffee and festive nibbles. I am pleased to say that Revd. Ian Kirby has been inducted to the Eastern half of the Brecon Beacons Group Pastorate, his wife Julie is currently training to be a Minister of religion at Cambridge University, and we are looking forward to her taking our Service on April 8th at 10.30am. A warm welcome to everyone.
Pennorth Chapel Coffee Morning - Saturday 28th April We are planning our annual Coffee Morning in The Chapel on Saturday 28th April between 10 – 12noon. This year the charity is our local Alzheimer’s Society. We are hoping that some representatives of the Society will be on hand to talk of their work, and need for “Befrienders” willing to visit a person with dementia. Please try and support this very good cause, every penny raised will go to the charity. It is hoped that this year we will be able to redecorate the front of The Chapel, with traditional Lime mortar, supplied and applied by Ty-Mawr Lime. This will involve removing the old cement render to allow the stone wall to thoroughly dry out during the summer. This is one of many plans we have for the Chapel, please come to the Coffee Morning and find out more.

Watch out for BIG improvements to Bwlch Village Hall in 2018! Our new chairs are not only stunning but ever so comfortable and really add to the bright, modern and welcoming ambience of the hall! A new catering sized cooker and hood will shortly be fitted continuing our improvement schedule to the kitchen and providing excellent catering facilities for anyone hiring the hall and for future Bwlch Village Hall events. The Committee Room is being refurbished and will shortly provide an attractive and more private venue for smaller meetings and group activities. Improvements to the existing car park are also planned including easier access and better lighting. The committee, ever aware of parking limitations in the village and the ensuing risk to pedestrians, are investigating the possibility of obtaining ground adjacent to the hall with the intention of providing more parking, a wildlife garden and a children’s community vegetable garden. If anyone can help with this please contact a committee member. The provision of a water bottle refill facility is also underway continuing the committee’s commitment to sustainable development whenever possible. As well as regular activities in the hall we will continue to expand the range, and appeal, of events and support community events such as The Bwlch Memorial Rededication Ceremony held last November. Llangors Community Council - update
Llangorse Community Council
Annual Public Meeting Members of the public are welcome to attend the bi-monthly meetings of the Community Council which are advertised in the local noticeboards and the webpage. Additionally in May, an Annual Public Meeting is held with a guest speaker invited to give a brief presentation about a topical community matter. The Chairperson also gives a brief outline of the work covered by the Community Council in the last year and an update on current topical matters. Residents are encouraged to attend to meet Councillors, understand the extensive range of subjects and work they do on a voluntary basis and raise current concerns. The meeting will be held on the evening of 15th May 2018 with further details being published nearer the time. Broadband Residents in some parts of the community are receiving a very poor broadband signal. It appears Openreach have now halted the installation of fibre due to the end of the Superfast Cymru project on 31st December 2017 and no current funding is in place. Welsh Government are considering the current status and funding for future broadband projects. The Community Council continue to monitor this situation and it is understood that County Cllr Emily Durrant is actively working on the matter with Kirsty Williams AM.
Llangors Primary School Everyone is delighted to see that the new school opened on 19th February 2018. We hope everyone is settling in well and we look forward to the community open day. Thanks also to Wilmott Dixon for the Llangors legacy project and the work they are currently doing at Llangors Youth & Community Centre.
Welsh Government Review of Town & Community Councils An independent review panel has been set up to consider the future role of Town and Community Councils. The review will explore the potential role of local government below Local Authority councils, define appropriate models/structures and how such structures should be applied across Wales. Keep Wales Tidy Spring Clean 1st-4th March In conjunction with St. Davids day, there is a national campaign to collect litter and keep our communities tidy. Thank you to all who are constantly helping litter pick and keep our community tidy. We can all do our bit!
Community Projects there are many local voluntary groups in our community working on exciting new projects, enhancing the area we live in. Good luck to those applying for grant funding and well done to those who have already been successful.

Beautiful Evergreen Plants for Shade…. into March. Lime green Helleborus foetidus and apple green Helleborus viridis also bring in the light to a dark corner.
Beautiful Evergreen Plants for Shade…. I have a new planting project at the Walled Garden – a gloomy overshadowed north west facing corner. The Strawberry tree and the Tassel tree are both strikingly dramatic and unusual trees for a shady place. Arbutus unedo has shiny dark green leaves and red strawberry like fruits in autumn. Garrya elliptica “James Roof” has dark matt green foliage and 1ft long silver grey flower tassels and can be trained against a wall or pergola. Winter scented evergreen shrubs give depth and structure all year and an unexpected sensory thrill in the darkest months. Skimmia confusa “Kew Green” is neat and compact and has apple green leaves with green winter buds and lily of the valley fragrance. The glossy dark leaved Sarcococca confusa has glorious scented white winter flowers and can be kept pruned as low hedge or edging plant. A hellebore that has architectural presence in the shade is the huge metallic leaved Helleborus argutifolius with large pale green flowers from the end of January right through

Two grasses that work well as ground cover, and in pots, are snowy woodrush, Luzula nivea, with softly arching creamy white flower spikes and slightly hairy matt green leaves, and the glossy fresh green leaved Hakonechloa macra which adds a more contemporary feel. The grass like Liriope muscari flowers in late summer and autumn with mauve flower spikes, and there is also a white flowered variety.
….and some more shade loving plants Where it is wet enough I’ll grow the water loving deciduous Royal Fern and Ostrich Plume Fern for their height and lush foliage and also the classic white Arum Lily. In pots on the gravel, hopefully safe from the slugs, I’ll have stately blue grey hostas. There are some lovely geraniums for shady spaces. The macrorrhizum varieties are semi evergreen and tolerate shade and drier soils – “Bevan’s Variety” has deep magenta flowers and aromatic foliage and “White Ness” has clear bright white flowers over emerald foliage.

P L A N T N U R S E RY Another striking geranium for shade is the lime foliaged “Anne Folkard” with black eyed magenta flowers. Cut them all back after the first flowering to promote a second flush of fresh foliage and sometimes flowers too. Plants for dry shade with great foliage, early emerging growth and late season show include the classic Male fern Dryopteris felix mas for stature. For colour the purplish spears of Amsonia “Blue Ice” first appear in April, followed by pointed apple green leaves, which look good with cut flowers, and clusters of bright blue star flowers in June and July. The foliage stays sharp all summer and then turns butter yellow in autumn. A woodland aster, Eurybia divaricatus “Eastern Star”, is another great performer. Shiny, green leaves appear in March to form a mound of bright green leaves held on striking black stems. Then, in from August to October, it produces masses of tiny white daisy flowers.
