We are pleased to announce that the disused Talyllyn phone kiosk has been given a new lease of life. With the aid of a Sustainable Development Fund grant from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority we have transformed our phone kiosk into an attractive centrepiece for the village. We have landscaped the area around the box, adding a planter and a memory bench, both made from recycled plastic from farms, where people can share and record their recollections of the area in a notebook which will be permanently based next to the kiosk. These memories will be recorded and placed on our website, www.llangorsehistory.org. Behind the bench is a replica sign from the old Talyllyn Railway station The phone kiosk itself is now a miniature local information centre illustrating many aspects of our fascinating history and landscape. There will also be space in the kiosk to advertise local businesses who are invited to contact Roger Young or myself for further details. Many local Talyllyn residents have supported the project including Jo and Tom Coppins, Robin Rennison, Roger Young, Ian Jones, Barbara Anglezark, Mark Young, Jon Dixon who provided the stunning visual displays and The Walled Garden at Treberfyd for supporting the maintenance of the plants in the planter. Finally, we could not have taken up care of the kiosk without the commitment of our Community Council who managed the technical details of adoption from British Telecom. To celebrate the new beginning a grand launch event was organised for the 3rd July in the evening when June Rennison, (ne Harris) and a representative from the Parks Authority jointly cut the ribbon! Having lived in Talyllyn for most of her life June remembers the local excitement when the phone kiosk was first installed in 1966 and used it on many occasions!

We hope now that the kiosk has a bright future to be enjoyed by local people and visitors for many more years to come! Our next talk by Helen Ellis is at Llangasty Hall on Thursday 11th July starting at the earlier time of 7.15pm. Helen`s talk is titled “80 yrs on; One Local Family`story of WW2”, based on the experiences of Val and Wilfred Morris of Manest Court. The talk will be followed by our popular ham and cheese ploughman's at £6. Refreshments will also be available. To reserve your ploughman's please phone the number below. Advance notice that our AGM will take place on Thursday 10th October to be followed by a talk by archivist and member Janet Karn titled “Murder most Foul“. Llangorse Common Toilets We continue to fundraise towards our match funding target of £7,000. Two coffee mornings have recently been held in support of the project, the first at Pennorth Chapel and a second at Llangorse Youth & Community Centre. Both were very well attended, raising a combined total of £578. Our thanks go out to Roger Young and everyone involved in organising the Pennorth Chapel coffee morning, and to Susan Jevons, Julie Pugh and helpers for organising the Llangorse morning. Diolch yn fawr! The demolition of the old toilet block went ahead as planned in March, and I am pleased to report that J L Stephens Ltd of Talybont-on-Usk have been appointed to build the new energeyefficient, sustainable facility in it's place. Construction started at the beginning of June, with work expected to complete by the end of the year. A grand opening will follow - watch this space! Temporary public toilet facilities are being provided until the new building is complete. If you wish to support the project, please contact Jim Price (Treasurer) on 658 616.

Fundraiser Coffee Mornings The time has flown by and the requests keep coming in for us to lend our support to. It only serves to indicate that we are a busy lot in this area... and we wouldn't have it otherwise. These coffee mornings are on the second Monday of each month 10am - 12 noon. The Bwlch With Altitude Challenge has now been running for 10 years! We think the reason for its continued success is summed up in the words of one of this year’s competitors… “The Bwlch With Altitude challenge is brilliant… with all kinds of questions to solve as you’re going between checkpoints. It doesn’t half make you think about where you are. How much we don’t see. How much we don’t question. How much we go round with our eyes half open! Try sailing at Llangorse Sailing Club's "Taster Day"

With summer weather well and truly here, well between showers, why not come and try boating at a very friendly and local club? We have one of the most beautiful lakes in the UK to sail on just around the corner? Guy Davison from Llangorse Sailing Club says “The lake boasts its own Llangorse Sailing Club run entirely by volunteers. The club’s Open Day is on Saturday 6th July when we open our doors to all”. It's our “Taster” day and they are keen to welcome you to come and have a go at sailing, see the Club and meet the very welcoming club members. “We'll provide the buoyancy aids,” Guy adds. “All you need is a set of clothes you don't mind getting a bit damp, plus a waterproof top, trainers, towel and a change of dry clothes and sun-cream for that sunny day!” The event’s open to children accompanied by parents and adults of course! Bring the family or friends, a picnic and make a day of it! The event is open to guests between 11.30am and 3pm. “Do come and join us,” Guy says. “No booking in is needed, just come on the day!” If you join the club you can sign up to learn to sail and safely drive a powerboat. Training is delivered by RYA qualified instructors. The club runs a very active youth sailing group, with a number of those now being selected for RYA Youth Squad inclusion and possible National team selection. MINISTRY AREA STUDY GROUP - NOT LENT BUT "SUMMER IN SIX OBJECTS" Based on the book LENT IN 46 OBJECTS, our Summer Study Group course will take some of its most striking yet ordinary objects and use them as a basis for bible study, reflection and discussion. The objects range from shoes to showers, from keys to curtains; they help us to appreciate all we have and see how we can use these everyday objects to go beyond, to glimpse the amazing riches of God's Kingdom. You are all welcome to one or more sessions as you are able. There will be 4 meetings, alternate Thursdays at 7pm, starting on Thursday 20th June, at Weatheroak, Llanhamlach. CONCERT AND ORGAN RECITALS There are two exciting events in Llangors Church in September, both organised by the Llangors History Group as part of the Brecon History Forum month which has 'music' as the theme this year. Please make a note of the dates: Firstly, on 14th September, Talgarth Male Voice Choir are giving an exciting and varied concert in aid of Llangors Church Funds. 7.30 pm start. Secondly, on 21st September, an Open-Day in Llangors church to celebrate Llangors Church Organ, a special and rare example of a Baroque Church Organ still in regular use. During the day, from around 11.00 – 4.30, there will be four organ recitals spaced across the day, each lasting half an hour and from four different organists; teas, coffee, cakes and sandwiches; an Art Exhibition; further exhibits by the History group, and some surprise exhibitors with an eco-friendly theme. Please join us. We will publish a programme nearer the time. (There will be no charge for either event or for the refreshments, but please feel free to donate to Church Funds.) Hope to see you there! Moon Gazing in the Brecon Beacons Llangorse Community & Youth Centre, Saturday 12th October 6pm-9pm Discover Llangorse & Bwlch are organising a fantastic evening, gazing at the moon. Do come along to our Moon gazing evening and learn more about the moon in the Dark Sky Wales planetarium, enjoy a lively talk about the legacy of the first men, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and celebrate when fifty years ago, two men first set foot on the moon. There will also be telescopes provided to offer the opportunity to look closely at the moon and do some astro photography looking at the full moon.

We would like to thank everyone that kindly supported our Coffee Morning held in May, it was a great success enjoyed by all, and raised £350 for the “Llangorse Common Community Toilets" project. On Saturday June 22nd a large congregation met at The Plough Chapel Lion St, Brecon to take part in the Ordination and Induction, of our new Minister, The Revd. Julie Kirby to the Western part of The Brecon Beacons Group Pastorate. Julie received a warm welcome from everyone, and takes her place next to her husband Ian, the Minister of the East part of the Pastorate. We wish the Kirbys our best wishes and look forward to them being our Ministers for many years. On Saturday 13th July from 4pm we will be holding a Social Event at the Chapel with a small display of the history of the Chapel. Everyone will be most welcome, please bring a bottle, tea, coffee soft drinks, and a light finger buffet will be provided, we look forward to seeing you. A note for your diary, our United Harvest Festival with Llangasty Church, will this year be held at Pennorth, on Sunday 13th October at 10.30am again a warm welcome to everyone.

After a quiet spring and our regular bookings, Bwlch Village Hall has had the pleasure of hosting the Bwlch with Altitude Challenge and Bwlchfest which included Hired Gun and friends in the evening, then a Discover Bwlch Arts day last Saturday and on the 22nd June, “A Play in a Day” culminating in a performance in the evening! A lot of very hard work went into organising these events and our Village Hall Committee would like to thank everyone who supported the Village Hall through the Walk or Bwlchfest, in particular, Emma, Pete and team for attracting even more Walk participants this year and Mike and Dave Harries and family for their creativity and commitment! We would love to see more villagers at our events and we are currently raising money for WiFi! A big thank you to the family of Lesley Price for their donation which has enabled us to purchase new staging. Look out for future events, a Breast Cancer Care Afternoon Tea fundraiser on Monday 8th June at 3pm, £10 includes raffle ticket and of course our Play in a Day workshop and evening performance!

The Brecon History Forum has chosen the theme of ‘music’ for their September history month and Llyn Syfaddan History Group’s contribution to this bigger event will be music in St. Paulinus Church. Any donations given (at both events) will go to St. Paulinus Church. • On Saturday 14th September the Talgarth Male Voice Choir is kindly giving a performance starting at 7.30pm. • On Saturday 21st September St. Paulinus Church will be hosting a day of organ music to celebrate it’s wonderful Byfield Organ (dating back to 1720). The day starts at 10.30 and finishes at 4pm. We plan to have four x half hour concerts during that time: 11am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm. Free refreshments will be available

Sixth Form Success at Gwernyfed

This year, Year 12 have taken full advantage of opportunities afforded to them as part of Gwernyfed’s successful sixth form. We are proud of all of our students but notable successes this year have been: Georgia Allen being selected to study by the Sutton Trust at a prestigious American university - during this summer (Georgia is being interviewed by S4C about this); Mia Gardner being selected to attend a residential course at Cambridge University; Amy Argent being elected onto the Welsh Youth Parliament; Year 12 media studies students interviewing celebrities live on BBC Radio Wales; Lewis Ball being selected for the Lord Edmund-Davies Legal Education Summer Scheme 2019 and Harvey Draper also organising work experience at Cardiff University. We have also attended a residential course at Carmarthen University where students completed a university module impressing their examiners with the high standards of their work. Mia has said: “One of the most helpful things about Gwernyfed sixth form is being kept up to date with external opportunities and information. I first heard about Cambridge residential placements being offered to year 12 students through an email, where I found it was targeted specifically to state school students with consideration for other factors like household income. I decided to try my luck and apply, and was very excited to hear back a few weeks later that I had gotten a place - to which I owe
a lot to the support from teachers, in both writing references and their encouragement. Over the course of the residential, I will be attending academic sessions, meeting with current students, receiving university advice as well as a quiz night and punting! It should be a fantastic few days, and I'm very grateful I was informed about such a great opportunity”. Harvey also said: “Sixth form has enabled me to secure work experience at Cardiff University. Mrs Savage helped me with the process of contacting the right people and writing to them in a formal way. This is going to be a great experience for me as I hope to gain a deeper understanding of my prospective career, and I wouldn't have been able to do to this without the help and support of the sixth form staff”. As we enjoy the long hot days of summer, (although as I write this it is cold and damp!), our thoughts naturally turn to Harvest time and our popular Harvest Supper which will be held on Friday 27th September. By popular demand we have a return visit by Uskelele who will be serenading us with their mix of musical genres with the added bonus that we can sing along. Further details will be circulated closer to the time. On July 10th we will be hosting the annual summer talk arranged by the Llyn Syfaddan History Group . It will start at 7.15 and is a fascinating account of the WW2 experiences of Val and Wilfred Morris of Manest Farm and is being given by Helen Ellis. We will be providing a ploughman's supper after the talk with proceeds going to the hall. This year we have been making further improvements to the hall, including the rewiring of the entrance area, a new porch and improvements to the car park area. We are grateful to John Rees and Andrew Kinsey for carrying out this work. Our Management Committee is shrinking further with the planned departure of Mark James who ,along with Flor, have been strong supporters. Marks practical skills and electrical knowledge has been a real help in guiding much of the improvements to the hall electrics. They will be missed but we wish them both well for the future. So, with a depleted committee, we are looking for new members to join. Are you new to the local area, or perhaps recently retired or simply looking for an opportunity to be involved in a community activity? Llangasty Village Hall is quite unique. Designed in the Arts and Craft style it retains much of its original features and is regularly hired by groups, organisations and families. Late Summer Flowers for Woodland Gardens A ravishing plant for part shade, Gillenia trifoliata has delicate, dainty, starry, white flowers with reddish calyces and stems, held above fine, dissected leaves. A native of North America, a common name is Indian physic, it has good autumn colour I first saw Kirengeshoma palmata at Beth and seedheads, and a long flowering Chatto’s garden, just outside Colchester, period from June to August. This is a very and was instantly smitten. P L A N T N U R S E RY flowers continuously from July to October. A beautiful, uncommon plant that I’m using everywhere this year. More familiar, perhaps, are my dry and shade tolerant stalwarts, the Japanese anemones and Astrantias. In particular, Anemone “Honorine Jobert” has good, dark green clump-forming foliage with tall stemmed, pure white flowers in late summer and autumn, and doesn’t run like some of the wildly vigorous pink varieties. The white Astrantia “Shaggy” flowers from May to October and will cope with most conditions once established. Astrantia major “Gill Richardson” has claret flowers and dark stems over a mound of dark purplish green foliage, needs a little more sun and flowers from May to July, and then, if cut back, again in August and September.
