Inspiration:

Surreal

The Surreal style was very inspiring and lent itself to endless possibilities and interpretations of my creative portrayal of an Evil Dwarf. I began sketching tyrant women with large heads and small bodies.

Sketches:

Surreal

In these sketches I was playing with the idea of a dumb, squatty boy and a small, animallike character both with large heads and small bodies.

Fantasy

Sketches:

Fantasy Fantasy versions of drwarfs seemed too narrow in their depictions with axes and helmets, but I decided to give it a try and see what I could do adding my own personal spin.

Inspiration:

Environment

Most fantasy dwarfs are known for being miners and living in caves. I decided to go with an arctic, icy mountain range for my location. This added to the evil aspects of the character with the cold colors and atmosphere.

Evil Dwarf The beard and horned helmet help us to know he is a dwarf, emphasizing his small stature with the big axe. The revised version makes him look more evil, and crops in to focus on him.

Inspiration:

Creature

A wooly mammoth was chosen as the creature/ transportaion for the evil dwarf. It is well equipped to handle the icy mountains and has nice contrast of the large mammoth with the small dwarf. The image does not depict the dwarf, however there is a small saddle upon the creature to suggest their relationship.

Wooly Mammoth The original mammoth comp blended too much into the background. In the revised version, the mountains are lightened, and the background is blurred, making the focal point be the mammoth. He also has a shadow to give it more depth.
