To me, structure is not fixed. Though Still and stable, structure also hides a dynamic state. In this project, I create the floating cube which reflects the dynamic side. When these floating cubes are arranged in certain pattern, they could form a complicated and continous curved surface.

The Concept of Floating Cube

These points divide each edge into 20 equal segments.

In the cube's framework, some pairs of edges are not on the same facet. By connecting their equaldividing points correspondingly, we could form an elegant floating curved surface. The more dense these equal-dividing points are, the more smooth the surface would be.

More Complicated Cube

Extension of Floating Surface

As more edges are connected, simple floating cubes could be developed into more complicated cubes. And the progress equals to adding one cube to anther.

While floating cubes are piled up or arranged in certain order, more and more floating surfaces are connecting to form bigger surfaces whereas the interrelations among these floating surfaces would generate very impressing visions and structures.

Form A Floating Surface When these floating cubes are put into an arrangement in order, their surfaces could compose a continous floating surface. With more floating cubes added into the arrangement, the surface could keep spreading. And the direction of its spreading depends on what kind of new cube is added. To demostrate the formation of surface, I begin with two CUBE A.

Red lines are the edges of floating surface within a single cube. When two cube are arranged together, making sure their red lines could meet closely.

While two red lines match together, a continous floating surface is formed within the two cube.

DEMO of Two CUBE A Since CUBE A has 3 red edges, there are several different ways to fo r m a f l o at i n g surface by using two CUBE A.

Gallery A variety of natural forms could be made up of floating cubes . The framework of these cubes represents the volume and stability of these forms while the floating surface reflects their instability and fluidity.

Mirroring World Since the world becomes more and more virtual, designers are able to create virtual feeling. Given this,I believe space could be also divorced from reality because it is something about feeling and sensibility. In this project, I create a virtual space based on calculation. It could be generated step by step without any deviation. But on the other hand, without limitation in real world, I could design the space for absolute feeling and something eternal. The mathematical justification is partly contributed by Zhang Zhiqiang PhD.

The Dialogue Between Two Mirrors

B

Once a mirror is erected, a negative world is born. The angle between the mirror and the observer's sight line determines the angle between the mirroring world and the real world.

B

A

A

When the second mirror parallel to the former one is erected, the real world is reflected between the two mirrors once and once again. The process is a kind of generation, thus an infinite mirroring world is generated.

When the second mirror is not parallel to the former one, the mirroring world would form a cycle eventually.

The Third Mirror + B

?

If I erect the third mirror which it is neither parallel to the former mirrors, nor parallel to the line the former two mirrors intersect, what would the mirroring world look like? Mirroring block generated by Mirror A

Mirror C

Mirror A

The more times new mirroring blocks are generated, the more the overall shape is approaching a sphere. But it is no coincidence that the mirroring blocks would form a sphere eventually.

Mirror B

Because the generation cannot be displayed by 2D Demo, I build a block which represents the space in the middle of three mirrors. Then I will use the block to demo how mirroring world is generated based on three mirrors.

Continuous Generation

Why It is Sphere?

Like the mirroring space generated by two mirrors, the mirroring space generated by three mirrors could also continuously generate more mirroring spaces based on the new reflection of original mirrors.

2

All new generated blocks are the reflection of the existing blocks.

Definitely, that the final appearance is sphere is not affected by the specific steps that I choose to generate the mirroring blocks. It is determined by the basic attribute of the original block: a space cut by three mirrors which intersect each other. Mirror C

Once the three mirrors are extended into three plane sur faces, these surfaces would intersect at a certain point (Point O). Supposing P is a point within the original block. P1, P2 and P3 are mirror point of P1 through the three mirrors. It is obvious to get the following conclusion:

OP=OP1=OP2=OP3

3

Mirror A

Thus Point O is the center of the sphere formed by Point P and its mirror points.

Mirror B

The mathematical justification is partly contributed by Zhang Zhiqiang PhD.

More Mirrors

Variation Of Mirroring Space

The final appearance of mirroring space based on three mirrors is a sphere, then is there any final form based on four or more mirrors? To find the answer, I demonstrate the generation process based on four mirrors.

In the previous demo, I use a block to represent the initial space within the mirrors. When the initial block is replaced by other forms or shapes, the appearance of the mirroring space would undoubtedly show a variety of forms.

Obviously, when there are more t h a n t h re e i n i t i a l m i r ro r s, t h e generation process becomes unpredictable and no final form would be attained. But the overall form is similar to a kind of fractal since in each step, the mirroring space could be divided into smaller spaces which partly share the same character of the bigger one.

MATERIAL & PROPERTY The material I use to create the artificial leaves is thin plastic bag because I find some interesting properties of it.

The original material is a transparent plastic bag with some elasticity。

Having scissored the bottom of the bag, I get a plastic case with openings both above and below. The case will be the basic element to compose the leaves.

After scissoring one side of the case, I can get a V-shaped plastic film.

By scissoring boths side of the case, I can get two plastic films.

By scissoring the case from different entry points, I can get smaller plastic cases of different sizes.

The small size case could be reversed into a '8'-like case.

ORGANIZATION By insecting these cases and flims of different shapes in different way, I could assemble various shapes of leaves. A single bent layer

叶 子 LEAVES Leafage is one of the most beautiful forms created by Mother Nature. While every leaf is unique, leafage share some universal forms and properties which reflect the basic law of beauty. In this project, I make use of the natural property of artificial materials to mold my own leaves which could approach the most natural state.

EW YORK PUZZLE is a jigsaw puzzle I design to test my ability of memory as well as to kill time. Unlike ordinar y jig saw puzzle, NEW YORK PUZZLE is also pritical. By playing it, I am able to demonstrate the other possibilities of the present city. Some of these possibilities are absurd while some others are really exciting. In some cases, I could even 'foresee' the potential risk cased by inappropriate urban plan. Definitely, NEW YORK PUZZLE could serve as a tool to inspire new mode of thinking and provide more information for problem-solving. New York is divided into 400 pieces

lassical art emphasizes molding body and light while modern art largely focuses on creating the pattern or melody among components. Fine art training cultivated my basic drawing skill and aesthetics. Design experiencce expands my thinking and pushes me to think different. With Prosody and Rhythm confirmed, we could write the first Stanza of Paper Poetry.

Stanza.1 Lily Flower

By nailing four Prosodies together, I could connect these lilies to form an exquisite web.

Prosody Prosody is the basic element to define a poetry. The prosody of Paper Poetry is very simple. It is made of a small paper square. By folding along the diagonal line, I get a 3D structure. It is where Paper Pomtry would begin.

The Prosody

Rhythm Metrical rhythm generally involves precise arrangements of stresses or syllables into repeated patterns called feet within a line. When it comes to Paper Poetry, the rhythm means several basic array modes or combination types of prosody. Definitely, Rhythm inherits the scalability of Prosody.

18

Stanza 2 has a special Rhythm which allows it to grow along a hexagonal frame.

Stanza.2 Honeycomb

Stanza 5 reflects and amplifies the scalability of Prosody.

Stanza.5 Fin

The speical Rhythem of this Stanza allows it to bend and stretch towards different directions. Twisted Fin

The staggered arrangement of Prosody in both horizontal and vertical dimensions forms the Honeycomb-like structure.

Stanza 3 & 4 are based on very simple Rhythm.

Stanza.3 Web

Similar to Honeycomb, Web is also based on the staggered arrangement of Prosody, but it only extends in two dimensions. Bent Fin

Stanza.4 Star Three Prosodies could compose a pyramid-like cone. Each Prosody creates one edge of the cone. When 24 Prosodies are arranged along the edge of a cube, they would form a pointed cube.

19

Stanza 6 could extend in three dimensions at the same time.

Stanza.6 Diamond

Stanza 7 is a double-layer hollow structure which could extend in two dimensions.

Stanza.7 Sponge

The frame made of four Prosodies displays extensibility in three dimensions.

Two Prosodies compose the basic element with two layers. And the two layers extend in differnet directions

Different Points of View

By nowďźŒI have finished all Stanzas made of Prosodies. So it is time to write the paper poetry!
