-A condo for timeshare travelers 12 Fall 601 Brian Phillips Studio work selected in PennDesign <Work Book 2012-2013> Republic of Wynwood’s (ROW) targets time-share travelers who are not satisfied by traditional travel model. Compared with ordinary hotel guests, they are more interested in being authentically connected to the local community rather than simply treated as tourists. Although Wynwood is not on the beach, it’s art-based context and central role in Art Basel presents a different kind of insider Miami experience. Unlike most condos in Miami, ROW redistributes the proportion between public space and private space. By providing a continuous balcony, ROW creates a multilayered circulation system which encourages people to build social connections with each other. ROW maximizes the ability for travelers to establish strong relationships with the local community.

Miami Dilemma After the economic bubble crashed in 2008, both the construction and the sale of new condo fallen into the trough. Both developers and potential clients were no longer able to support the huge debt they had. But meanwhile as a global city Miami is still attractive for immigrants from Latin America and Asia. Definitely, the existing Miami Model no longer maintained the prosperity of real estates.

pixel cloud 13 Spring 602 Shawn Rickenbacker Studio work (in progress) Cooperate with Jason Potter (role: Site research, concept develop, massing develop) Pixel cloud is an air remediation complex located in downtown NYC. The pixelized form creates maximized surface to absorb pollutants while exhibiting a varity of spatial possibilities. An obeserve deck connects all programs along the zigzag surface and atriums are set to introduce natural light into the building, Based on the spatial organization of pixel, the massing evolves a series of continuous spaces with varied desities, solidities and lighting environments. Like a cloud without solid boundaries, the complex is integrated with the community. Meanwhile, the spaces within space give extensive space definitions and allow the professionals working in the station maintain privacy.

12 Spring 502 Mark Kroeckel Studio work selected in PennDesign <Work Book 2011-2012> Distance and volumn are not always measured visually. Given the same room, the same building, the same street,or the same city, people always get different experiences because of their different speeds. In this project, building is a tool to redesign users’ speeds. Each program of the building could put certain impact on people’s speed. When the property is well applied to the design process, these programs could compose a network of speed incubators. Then people could have better experience while they are the dynamic elements of the network.

communication bazzar 11 Fall 501 Studio work

Eye contact is a psychological tie which plays a significant role in people’s daily communication. In many cases, eye contact is affected by the environment in which people walk, sit and talk. Once figure out the relationship between space and eye contact, designers could build up an artificical space which could shorten the psychological distance between people by creating more eye contacts. Exhibition space and meditation space could be the tie to link people’s emotion and attention.

not just garage

12 Spring 502 Studio work

A statue could turn a wasteland into a park; A park could turn an abandoned place into a dynamic community. Therefore,a food truck garage could serve as a catalyst that can activate whole area as long as it is designed not just a garage.

flexible cube 11 Fall 501 Visual Study

The Concept of Flexible Cube is when a physical structure is parameterized, some potential properties which maybe contradictory to its physical properties could be found and developed. In this case a physical cube is build in parametric method. When it turns into a surreal deployable structure that could insert into itself, the parametric statistics could reveal a variety of strenchness and volumn.

Regenerate Go-Chair 11 Fall 501 Studio work

Go-Chair’s organic design gives it a form naturally generated from its joints and curves. When regeneration happened, the organization of Go-Chair’s structural component would define a series of iterations which could create great beauty.

new york super sewer 12 Fall Personal environment design

In this case, I draw a super sewer system which provides water clean function and could deal with some emergency situations such as water overflowing by setting several layers of filters and dams. The big machine is underground with only an entrance for staff left on ground. The purified water from the outlets could be used for irrigation. And probably the huge underground space could become the home of another NYC,a non-mainstream New York City version.
