Because of you, LLU Children’s Hospital has been able to prioritize the health and safety of children for thirty years. Since 1993, LLU Children’s Hospital has been a place of compassionate care that champions leading-edge healthcare specifically for children.

Because of you, our hospital has grown into a 380-bed facility with more than 100 pediatricians and pediatric surgeons providing advanced and specialized care for the 1.2 million children living in San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Mono counties.

Because of you, 90,000 children are able to visit our hospitals and clinics each year to get the critical care they need. In fact, you’ve paved the way for 12,000 annual hospitalizations, more than 200 pediatric heart surgeries each year, and for specialized treatments that address 30 different conditions affecting children.

30th Anniversary Foundation Gala, Dreams Do Come True. We are honored to share our special celebration with each of you tonight.

This year’s gala focuses on recognizing all those that have helped us achieve our goals since we opened our doors in 1993 and on dreaming of a future of even greater hope and healing for the children and families of our communities.

Some of the most significant moments in people’s lives happen in a hospital and many of those moments are yet to come. I consider it an immense privilege for our children’s hospital to be ready for those times and to work alongside our medical professionals as they demonstrate skill, expertise and compassion for those who need it the most.

For an incredible 30 years, Loma Linda University Children's Hospital has offered a whole child healing environment focused on patient safety, quality and clinical innovation. Our new Children’s Hospital tower in the Dennis and Carol Troesh Medical Campus features all private patient rooms, new CATH labs, a pediatric dedicated emergency department and the San Manuel Maternity Pavilion. We continue to dream for the future and strive to provide the best medical care for the children, mothers and families of our region.

Last December, we received our fifth recognition by The Leapfrog Group as a nationally ranked Top Children's Hospital. This designation highlights our commitment to consistently provide a safe environment and deliver the highest quality care to mothers and children. We feel honored to be one of only 12 children's hospitals across the country to receive this designation. In addition to this award, we have also been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a “Best Children’s Hospital” in cardiology and heart surgery, neonatology and nephrology, and by Newsweek as a “Best Maternity Hospital.”

An Inland Empire staple on K-FROG, broadcasting for nearly 30 years, mother to a Children’s Hospital patient and a Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation board member, Heather Froglear is an enthusiastic advocate for pediatric healthcare. Combining her talent and passion, Heather Froglear has helped K-FROG raise more than $7 million to benefit Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

RENEE ROJANARO AND AFTER DARK

Renee Rojanaro and her band After Dark have been entertaining for over 15 years as a classy, versatile and fun variety band. Renee's voice embodies the nostalgic sound of a 1920’s singer but also sings today's hits with a fresh and jazzy flair. During the week, Renee serves as an administrator of Visual and Performing Arts in the California public school system and spreads her love of music and the arts to thousands of students. On the weekends, she shares her passion for performing by providing quality entertainment for private and corporate events throughout Southern California. When she isn't performing, she is snuggling her grandkids and spending time with family.

Alex Parraga: Overcoming Adversity with Strength and Resilience

We are honored to share with you the incredible story of Alex Parraga, a young man from Victorville, California, who has faced adversity with remarkable strength and resilience.

In August 2021, Alex, then 16, began feeling discomfort in his left knee. He initially dismissed it as growing pains. But as the pain intensified, he knew something was not right. After being referred to an orthopaedic surgeon, Alex underwent an MRI scan that left him and his family in shock.

“It was my orthopaedic surgeon who first said the word cancer,” Alex recalls.

Alex was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that affects the cells forming bones. His doctors also discovered calcified tumors on his lungs. Despite dealing with two types of cancer, his medical team decided to prioritize treating the bone cancer in his leg first. Alex spent weeks on the pediatric oncology unit at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, where he underwent several rounds of chemotherapy until his first cancer surgery in February 2022.

During the grueling 17-hour surgery, Alex received a bionic knee, upper thigh, and lower leg. After a two-week recovery in the hospital, he had to re-learn how to walk.

Alex admits that the life-changing diagnosis has taken a toll on him physically, emotionally and mentally.

Just when he thought the worst was behind him, a routine CT scan showed five new tumors on his right lung. But Alex isn't letting the double bout with cancer hold him back from pursuing his dreams of becoming a pilot, photographer and motivational speaker. Instead, he's using the wisdom he has gained from the experience to motivate and inspire others.

"I want to prove to myself that I can get through this. The best way is to choose to stay positive," he said.

With that determination and spirit, there's no doubt that Alex will continue to soar.

The Shirley N. Pettis Award recognizes outstanding dedication and distinguished service to children. Through their volunteerism and community service, award recipients have demonstrated the desire and motivation to improve the lives of children throughout the Inland Empire. Throughout her career, The Honorable Shirley N. Pettis Thompson was dedicated to improving the status of children, both nationally and in California. After her husband’s passing, she was elected to his seat and served the 37th Congressional District of California in the 94th and 95th Congress. Her commitment was underscored by six years of service as founding chair of the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation Board. Under her leadership, the Foundation expanded its membership and increased awareness of children’s issues and needs.

In recognition of her commitment and service to LLU Children’s Hospital and in appreciation for her lifelong dedication to improving the quality of life for children, we acknowledge and remember the late Honorable Shirley N. Pettis Thompson through this award.

Nancy B. Varner was one of the founding board members of the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation in 1992. Her active involvement with the Children’s Hospital included a term as the Foundation’s chair and chairing the inaugural Children’s Hospital Foundation Gala. In recognition of Nancy’s outstanding dedication and distinguished service to children through volunteerism and community service, the Lifetime Achievement Award is now known as the Nancy B. Varner Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Nancy B. Varner Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding dedication and lifetime distinguished service. Through both personal and professional service, the award winner has demonstrated desire, motivation and devotion to improve the lives of others.

Pete and Patsy Gillies’ relationship to Loma Linda University Health began when Patsy started volunteering for the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Over her more than 25 years of volunteer service, Patsy provided comfort and joy to countless patients and their families during their time of need. Pete was overjoyed by her love for the organization and what volunteering meant to her. Because of her service and because of Pete’s nearly 50-year career as a helicopter pilot and instructor, Pete and Patsy were inspired to name the helipad on the 16th floor of the Dennis and Carol Troesh Medical Campus.

In 2018, Pete lost the love of his life when Patsy passed away unexpectedly. To remember her, Pete named another space in the new tower lobby in memory of Patsy. Then, in 2021, Pete’s interest in technology made it clear to him how important the life-saving capacity of a dedicated pediatric daVinci robot could be for Loma Linda University Children's Hospital and he provided pivotal support for that fundraising initiative as well. Today, Pete continues the vision and compassion his wife demonstrated during her many years of service, making the couple excellent candidates for the 2023 Nancy B. Varner Lifetime Achievement Award.

Nancy, who passed away in 2019 following a battle with cancer, co-founded the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Guild, the Inland Women Fighting Cancer Committee, and the annual Believe Walk in Redlands.

Outstanding Clinician Award

Dr. Leonard L. Bailey was a world-renowned pediatric heart surgeon whose work has given hope to children everywhere. His research and innovations in infant cardiology have helped save thousands of lives around the world. For 42 years, Dr. Bailey guided patients and their families at Loma Linda University Health through some of their most trying times. In honor of his legacy, we renamed our Outstanding Clinician Award to recognize Dr. Bailey’s lifetime of contributions.

The Dr. Leonard L. Bailey Outstanding Clinician Award recognizes lifelong dedication and distinguished service provided to children by a clinician at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. Through their professional career and advocacy, award recipients have demonstrated the desire and motivation to improve the lives of children throughout the Inland Empire.

Cynthia H. Tinsley, MD

Dr. Tinsley has dedicated three decades to pediatric critical care, and for more than twenty years has served the most critically ill and injured children of the Inland Empire. As the Chair of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, Dr. Tinsley has not only provided outstanding care and compassion to families in their time of greatest need, but she has also advanced the quality of care and support provided to both the patient families and the pediatric residents rotating through Children’s Hospital.

Her selfless dedication to patients, interns, residents and colleagues along with her humor, good nature and positivity have had a profound impact on the Children’s Hospital’s pediatric care family. She teaches interns how to care for the whole patient and the whole family; she is a team member who leads and inspires by example; and her work ethic and intentional acts of kindness are unmatched.

Indeed, Dr. Tinsley’s wit, creativity and systems perspective have made her a pillar of resident education at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Her leadership coupled with her patience, compassion and grit make a difference in the lives of her interns, patients and patient’s families, and has made her a role model for interns — especially as witnessed through the challenges of a global pandemic.

A highly respected, well-published and much-loved clinician and educator, Dr. Tinsley’s legacy at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital will go on for decades. She is an exceptional candidate for this year’s Dr. Leonard L. Bailey Outstanding Clinician Award.

Dr. Leonard L. Bailey's most enduring legacy lives in the qualities he demonstrated and inspired in others every day. These qualities rekindle our spirits, and in turn, the spirits of those we serve. For these reasons and many others, we cannot thank Dr. Bailey enough.

What began as a fun pastime has launched longtime Redlands retiree, Thomas Kaney, into a formidable philanthropist! For nearly a decade, Tom has spent more than 4,000 hours in his home wood shop creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind cutting boards, charcuterie boards, game boards, breadboards, bowls and more for local charities in the Inland Empire.

In 2012, Tom created a wood shop in his home and after being inspired by a cutting board made by his Uncle Keith Robinson, made a few for his family. One day, he got the idea to make cutting boards and other items out of wood for charity and has since given away more than 1,100 items to raise money for charity. The organizations closest to Tom’s heart are those that serve children, and Tom’s crafted items are only available with a donation to the charities he supports.

Some of Tom’s favorite causes include LLU Children’s Hospital, Loma Linda University Health, Big Hearts for Little Hearts Guilds, Family Service Association of Redlands, Redlands Optimist Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of Redlands, Redlands Community Hospital, Ronald McDonald House of Loma Linda and more.

A true labor of love, each piece Tom crafts takes about four hours to complete, and he never takes one penny for his efforts. When others make a gift to one of Tom’s charities of choice, he gifts them with one of his hand-crafted pieces. To date, Tom’s gifts have inspired more than $300,000 in giving to nonprofits in our community. In recognition of his dedication to making a difference in the lives of children, it is an honor to recognize Tom Kaney with the Hometown Hero Award.
