FLOWER BULBS QUALITY MARK F O U N D AT I O N H O L L A N D

C.H. van den Berg BV is a member of the Flower Bulbs Quality Mark Foundation Holland. This foundation is an independent organization that has it’s origin in the Royal Association for Flower Bulbs and Plant Traders (Anthos). After a severe training and trial period the quality mark is granted exclusively to associated exporters who freely commit themselves to meet the strictest quality requirements and regulations and accept regular inspections by independent experts. Main issues for the Quality Mark Foundation are that bulbs, packed by it’s members, are healthy and of an excellent quality, true to type, colour and size as indicated on the packaging. The packaging itself must have a picture, true to nature of it’s contents and be provided with the correct planting instructions. Of each variety offered, the bulbs must have at least the required minimum sizes to ensure an optimal ﬂowering

Each Quality Mark package can be recognized by the logo you see at the top of this page. The Quality Mark is a guarantee for you and your customers that the products offered have been taken seriously and treated with care and attention. In addition, the quality mark offers consumers the possibility to apply directly to the Quality Foundation in case their expectations have not been met. How, is indicated on each package and following these guidelines your

The flowers of the cactus Dahlia are prickly looking, forming pointed and slender petals. With a height of more than 1 m, it’s used in flower beds mixed with perennials or other bulbs. Its vivid colours make excellent cut flowers to brighten up bouquets.

The Dahlia is the most widespread of the summer flowering bulbs and known for its long and generous flowering period, right up to the first frosts. The Dahlia is a tuberous root, introduced into Europe by a botanist in the 17th century to be eaten as a vegetable. In each species, a wide and varied range of colours exist where only blue and green are absent. The Dahlia isn’t hardy, except in regions with mild climates.

Bulbs have flowered and coloured our gardens for a long time: it is thought that they were first planted around 1800 BC! A bulb contains the whole plant: the future flower, the leaves, as well as the offset bulbils which will become bulbs. This set forms the whole plant.Successful growth primarily depends on the quality of the bulb and its size (grade). If stored in bad conditions they can dry out or become excessively damp which encourages unwanted mushroom growth. Flower bulbs are divided into two groups. Starting from ± the end of August/beginning of September we can find bulbs which are planted in autumn and generally flower in the spring. From the end of February/beginning of March, we can buy bulbs that are planted in spring and have a summer flowering period. Bulbs require good light and prefer a sunny or semi-sunny spot. Certain species, such as allium, dahlia, fritillary, lily and some tulips need to be sheltered from the wind due to their long stems. Depth of planting is also an essential factor for successful growth: as a general rule, it is said that bulbs should be planted at a depth equal to 3 times their diameter, but there are always exceptions!

The name Gladiolus, coming from the Latin “Gladius” (two-edged sword), was given to this flower because of its leaf shape. It’s a large genus of which the majority of the bulbs are used for greenhouse and cut flowers. Gladioli are excellent for bouquets.
