SERIES ROUND-UP

Welcome

he 2017 Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship supported by Pro Clean proved to be somewhat unpredictable with the eventual champions, although totally deserved, perhaps not being everyone’s top pick to win before the season began. But that is of course why we run the races… From the opening round at Culham in March through to the season finale at Foxhill come the end of August, all four championships were hard fought affairs with no single rider dominating. To prove that point there were no fewer than five different race winners in MX1 while MX2 saw six riders top the podium which proves there’s plenty of talent in these championships. And the future’s looking bright too as the MXY2 Programme produced by JP Off Road 41 Northgate, White Lund Industrial Estate, Morecambe LA3 3PA

Round One, Culham

Wet n’ Wild! Culham Moto Park hosts round one of the series where pre-event rain means it’s wet, wet, wet… Hitachi KTM UK riders Jake Nicholls and Ben Watson dominated the opening round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship supported by Pro Clean at a rough, tough Culham Moto Park. Nicholls ran 1-1 in MX1 with two commanding rides and Watson matched his scores in MX2 while in MXY2 it was Team Green Kawasaki’s fast 14-year-old Lewis Hall who came away with the overall win with a 2-1 score. Overnight rain made the always testing circuit even more challenging but Nicholls and Watson, both fresh from points-scoring rides at the previous weekend’s rain-lashed Indonesian GP, never faltered.

Graeme Irwin and Nicholls go bar-to-bar as they fight for the holeshot in race two

After posting the second-fastest time in quali behind Geartec Husqvarna’s Elliott Banks-Browne, Nicholls converted good starts into early leads and maximum points with Buildbase Honda’s Graeme Irwin and Hobbs Racing Kawasaki’s Steven Lenoir joining him on the podium. Watson, who missed almost the entire 2016 season with a foot injury sustained at the Argentine GP, topped qualifying by over two seconds and looked in total control on a technically very challenging track. His double win gives him a 15-point lead over MVR-D Husqvarna’s flying Finn Harri Kullas with Putoline Planet Suspension Husqvarna rider Brad Todd a further three points adrift. After following Gear4 KTM’s Jake Edey home in the opening MXY2 moto, Hall clinched the overall with victory second time out. Keenan Hird put his Craigs Kawasaki on the second step of the podium with Edey surviving a crash in race two to take third.

Round Two, Lyng

Second Helpings! MX1 championship leader Jake Nicholls keeps on trucking as the Maxxis series visits Lyng for round two‌ Jake Nicholls kept his series winstreak going when he claimed the MX1 overall at the second round of the series which was held at Cadders Hill, Lyng. After dominating qualifying the local hero from just over the border in Suffolk raced to victory in the opening moto, leading every lap as he crossed the line over three seconds ahead of Graeme Irwin who snatched second from Steven Lenoir with a late pass as the pair encountered back-markers. Elliott Banks-Browne (Geartec Husqvarna) came home fourth, 40

8

seconds behind the winner, with former champion Kristian Whatley (Apico Husqvarna) taking fifth from Finnish ironman Harri Kullas (MVR-D Route 77 Husqvarna) who again contested both pro classes. Estonian fan-favourite Gert Krestinov (Phoenix Tools Honda) was seventh ahead of Jamie Law (Apico Husqvarna), Ashley Wilde (RFX KTM) and two-time champion Brad Anderson (Verde Sports Racing KTM). On a track where passing was difficult it was Krestinov who led the way in race two from Irwin and

Nicholls with the top three holding position for the full race distance. Lenoir was a close fourth before a 48-second gap back to Anderson with Whatley sixth from Wilde, Kullas, Dubliner Stuart Edmonds (CCM Racing TM) and Ryan Houghton (iFly JK Yamaha). Nicholls nicked the overall by one point ahead of Irwin with Krestinov filling the third step of the podium. After his double win at Culham, Ben Watson carried the MX2 red series leader’s plate at Lyng and after topping qualification by over a second and leading the opening moto for more than half-distance it looked ominous for his opposition. But Kullas had other ideas and took the lead and the win with Martin Barr (Buildbase Honda), who was racing with a shoulder injury, recovering from a crash to take third ahead of Mel Pocock (REVO Husqvarna UK), Brad Todd and Lewis Tombs (Lings Husqvarna). Josh Gilbert (DTHORC Honda) was seventh

chased by Todd Kellett (St Blazey MX Husqvarna), Luke Norris (Geartec Husqvarna) and Jordan Divall (Evotech KTM). Watson led the second race from the opening lap with Kullas, after making a quick pass on Todd for second, close behind until in the closing stages a mistake left Watson on the ground long enough for the Finn to make a decisive pass. Watson recovered quickly to finish 1.7 seconds back but comfortably ahead of Pocock whose crucial pass on Barr gave him third overall on a tie-break. Todd was fifth from Tombs, Divall, Kellett, Liam Knight (Hobbs Racing Kawasaki) and Belgian MX2 champion Kevin Wouts. The pro classes were again supported by the MXY2 class where Keenan Hird ran 2-1 to take the overall from Tom Grimshaw (HCR Putoline Apico Yamaha) who won the opener but fell when leading race two. Jake Edey was third on a tie-break with Jack Cadwallader (RMJ Husqvarna UK).

Round Three, Canada Heights

All Change!

With Jake Nicholls out through injury the MX1 series is blown wide open while Harri Kullas continues his dominance of the MX2 division… It was all change at the top of the MX1 leaderboard after round three of the championship as Jake Nicholls, the series leader after two rounds, sidelined through injury the way was clear for a new rider to take over and Frenchman Steve Lenoir stepped up to the mark, running 3-2 to move into a slender two-point lead from Graeme Irwin. The overall win on the day went to Gert Krestinov who picked up where he left off at Lyng and followed up his second-placed finish in the red-flagged opening

moto with a win in race two. Elliott Banks-Browne has looked fast all season but until Sunday had failed to string two solid races together. That all changed at Canada Heights where his 1-3 score earned him the second step on the podium. With Irwin running 4-5 after crashing in the opener and suffering a technical problem in race two it was Lenoir, third overall on Sunday with a 3-2 card, who is now the man everyone’s shooting at. In MX2 the win for the second

round on the trot went to Harri Kullas who, for the first time this season, opted not to race MX1 as well. Fresh from a round of the Estonian national championship the previous day, Kullas looked supersharp as he pulled clear of Mel Pocock to win the opener and then followed Ben Watson home in race two. Watson, who saw his series lead cut from nine points to three, was disappointed with his opening race while his team-mate Josiah Natzke ran 3-4 to take his first Maxxis podium. pre-mix hung heavy in the air as the hotly-anticipated ACU British Twostroke Championship kicked off with a strong line-up of riders. Pre-race favourite Mike Kras (GL12 KTM), who topped EMX250 qualification at Valkenswaard on his stroker the week before, didn’t disappoint and raced to a dominant double win. Former British MX2 title contender Nev Bradshaw was back in action and was sporting an earto-ear grin after ripping to a pair of second places on his 2002 CR250 while third overall was Lewis Trickett who, after struggling with injury in 2016, was happy to be back racing and running near the front.

Ben Watson extended his MX2 series lead and Graeme Irwin grabbed the MX1 leader’s red plate at round four of the championship at Hawkstone Park. Dry conditions leading into the event resulted in a track that didn’t cut up as badly as expected, shaving seconds off lap times as the country’s premier championship passed the halfway stage. Opening round winner Watson, who’s seen his lead cut first at Lyng and then Canada Heights, hit his stride in the Shropshire sand and took full advantage of a mechanical problem suffered by Harri Kullas in the opening moto to extend his lead with the race win.

Round Five, Desertmartin

Home Rule! There’s no need for the luck of the Irish at Desertmartin as homeboys Graeme Irwin and Martin Barr are simply dominant… Buildbase Honda team-mates Graeme Irwin and Martin Barr produced dominant performances to top the MX1 and MX2 podiums at Desertmartin. The two Irish riders went into their home round of the series determined to win and both achieved their goals in the deep sand of one of the UK’s premier circuits. After topping qualifying by over two-anda-half seconds, Irwin holeshot the opening MX1 moto and led all the way to the flag for a four-second victory. Race two was a repeat performance and if anything he looked even smoother as he won by seven seconds and extended his series lead to 39 points with three rounds to go.

Graeme Irwin raced to a dominant double MX1 win – his third in a row – at round six of the series at the Woodbridge club’s excellent Blaxhall circuit. The Irishman now leads the championship by 52 points and could wrap the title up one round early at Preston Docks on July 31. In MX2 it was 20-year-old Todd Kellett (Hitachi KTM UK) who raced to a career first moto win and overall victory on a sensational debut for his new team while James Dunn (GL12 KTM Racing) doubled up in the two-stroke class. Qualifying second behind home favourite Elliott Banks-Browne, Irwin

holeshot the opening moto before it was red-flagged after EBB crashed heavily and sustained a suspected concussion that put him out for the day. From the restart Irwin holeshot again and after soaking up early pressure from two-time champ Brad Anderson pulled clear to win by over 10 seconds from Ando and Ryan. Title contender Gert Krestinov took a hard-fought sixth after an early crash dropped him to 22nd on the opening lap. Irwin took his third holeshot of the day in race two and after swapping passes with Ando finally broke clear at half distance to come home over seven-and-

a-half seconds clear of Krestinov. Anderson, who was slowed by a rear brake issue, was third for second overall ahead of Houghton whose race-two fourth earned him the final step on the podium. Micky Eccles topped MX2 qualification but it was Kiwi Josiah Natzke who holeshot the opening moto and cleared off to win by almost 10 seconds from Mel Pocock. Local hero Lewis Tombs (Lings Husqvarna) had a great ride for third just ahead of Kellett who came through from 15th after the first lap. Series pace-setter Ben Watson and his main title rival Martin Barr who’d both come from outside the top 20, were in the thick of it with Watson taking second from Barr on the final lap. Pocock’s 2-5 card was good enough for second overall from Natzke who was ninth in race two after ending the opening lap all the way back in 29th. further 32 points adrift in third. Blaxhall also played host to round three of the British Two-stroke Championship and Dunn, who missed the opening round, looked supersmooth as he streaked to both wins to take the overall ahead of veteran South African Neville Bradshaw who ran 2-3 from series newcomer Manuel Lacopi who carded 4-2. Dutchman Mike Kras lost his unbeaten record but despite struggling to 3-8 finishes after taking a big soil sample in race two he still leads Bradshaw by seven points with one round to go.

Champions are crowned as the Maxxis series blows through the North West… Buildbase Honda’s Graeme Irwin won both MX1 races at the penultimate round of the Maxxis series – extending his win-streak to eight motos – and clinched the title with victory in the second 25-minute plus two lap race after resisting early pressure from EWC contender Nathan Watson who’d taken up a wildcard ride. Irwin was joined on the podium by Brad Anderson who went 2-4 and

Nathan Watson who ran 6-2. Nathan’s younger brother Ben – who missed almost the entire 2016 season through injury – won Preston Docks’ opening MX2 moto on his Hitachi KTM UK machine and led race two before American wildcard Darian Sanayei (Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki) passed him just after half-distance. With his main title rival Martin Barr struggling with starts all

Todd Kellett failed to replicate his Blaxhall form

day Watson knew he could afford to ease his pace and still take the title with one round to go. Sanayei’s 2-1 card gave him the overall win from Watson and Barr who took a pair of fourth-placed finishes to snatch third on a tie-break ahead of Watson’s team-mate Josiah Natzke. In the MXY2 class Keenan Hird took the overall and the series lead after opening race winner Lewis Hall crashed out of race two while leading. Hird’s 3-1 card gives him a 24-point lead in the championship ahead of Tom Grimshaw who was third overall behind Jack Bintcliffe (Hitachi KTM UK).

In the British Two-stroke Championship it was James Dunn who remained unbeaten on the day as his team-mate Mike Kras took the title and Tom Grimshaw topped the MXY2 class but couldn’t stop Keenan Hird from sweeping to the coveted crown. The day ended in disappointment

for Buildbase Honda pairing Graeme Irwin and Martin Barr. Irwin, with the MX1 title already secured, attempted to race both classes but withdrew halfway through the day through illness and Barr, with second in the MX2 championship safe, crashed heavily in his opening moto Fortunately, after being taken to hospital, the diagnosis was heavy bruising but no broken bones for the

tough Irishman. Sanayei was joined on the podium by Natzke who took second on a tie-break after carding 4-2 from Mel Pocock who ran 2-4. In the championship Harri Kullas snatched third behind Ben Watson – who, with the title already in the bag, raced MX1 – and Barr. Searle, the 2016 MX1 champ, was in dominant form but was chased hard all day by Elliott Banks-Browne who signed off with two secondplaced finishes and Gert Krestinov in third with a 4-3 card. Watson, making his 450 debut, looked fast and impressed with a 6-4 score for fifth overall. In the championship Krestinov took second from Brad Anderson

by 13 points. Despite missing the opening round of the two-stroke series Dunn claimed third in the championship behind Kras and Neville Bradshaw thanks to his second maximum score in a row. Bradshaw, racing an ’89 CR500, came home third on the day behind series newcomer Ashley Greedy.
