Welcome W Are proud to support the 2017 Maxxis British Motocross Championship

oodbridge and DMCC welcomes you to the Blaxhall Circuit in Suffolk for the sixth round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship supported by Pro Clean.

We are very pleased to be able to welcome everyone back to the Blaxhall Circuit once again. Our previous two events in 2015 and 2016 have been very successful and even saw the club awarded the ‘Maxxis Organiser of the Year’ award for its 2016 event.

Obviously today’s event would not be possible without the kind support of our event sponsors, including local Mercedes Benz dealership, Orwell Truck and Vans. Orwell Truck & Van are East Anglia’s Leading Provider of Mercedes-Benz and Fuso commercial vehicles with dealerships in Ipswich, Norwich, Colchester and Newmarket and have worked very hard to establish a reputation for professionalism and service. Founded in 1991, Orwell Truck and Van have never lost sight of their roots and that is why their quality of work, customer care and a friendly service remain the hallmarks of their business. Orwell Truck and Van are part of Imperial Holdings and are committed to making their customers Mercedes-Benz ownership as enjoyable and convenient an experience as possible. It is for this reason Orwell Truck and Van have recently opened a brand new Mercedes-Benz Van Centre on Gloster Road, Martlesham Heath offering the same exemplary experience to that of a passenger vehicle dealer at a purpose built showroom. Facilities include a large outdoor display area for both New & Used Mercedes-Benz Vans, ample customer parking and for your convenience, extended opening hours; Monday – Friday 08:00 – 18:00 & Saturdays 08:00 – 16:00. This year the Foxwood Ceramics Holeshot Award will once again help to increase the excitement of the most spectacular part of the race, the start, thanks to the support of Kesgrave based Foxwood Ceramics. This established local family business offers an extensive and imaginative range of wall and floor tiles and bathrooms. Foxwood Ceramics is owned by former motocross rider Matt Cottrell, who has long been a supporter of the Woodbridge Club and father of former European and British Championship rider James Cottrell. With forty of the best Motocross riders from the UK and Europe battling it out in both the MX1 and MX2 classes, the extra incentive of a Cash Prize is sure to increase the importance of the start for the riders. Also for the first time in 2017 the Holeshot Awards will be given to the all-new British 2-Stroke Championship races meaning that there will be six Awards handed out across the course of the races. Programme produced by JP Off Road 41 Northgate, White Lund Industrial Estate, Morecambe LA3 3PA

Local road surfacing company Steve Lumley Planing Ltd, a keen supporter of both two and four wheeled Motorsport in the area have stepped forward once again to help support the event. Over 100 tonnes of Road Planings have been supplied to allow us to create new roadways and resurface existing access roads around the venue. As a club we were originally formed back in 1956 in the name of the Rendlesham MCC before changing to the Woodbridge and DMCC in 1966 and have been running motorcycle events at Blaxhall for over fifty years.

We are also proud to be one of the very few clubs in the country lucky enough to own their own facility and are continually working towards improving the facilities around the venue for both the riders and spectators and remain very club orientated by holding Club events during the season. Preparation and planning never stops from year to year as we continually look to improve the venue and our events. Due to the scale of the event we have once again rented additional land from our neighbouring farmers, which has formed the extension of the main paddock and car park. This additional land has allowed us to create a spacious Trade and Catering Area, where you will be able to sit down and relax on one of the many picnic tables during the course of the day. The Woodbridge and DMCC would like to thank all of their sponsors, the hard working club members, friends of the club for their countless hours over the last year and the local landowners and neighbours of the circuit for their support of the event. If you would like to find out more about the Woodbridge and DMCC then visit the club website at www.woodbridgemcc.co.uk or ‘Like and Follow’ us on both Facebook and Instagram. We hope that you have an enjoyable day here at Blaxhall.

Flashback: 2009

Some mid-season Maxxis mayhem from Brampton where a dominant double win for MVR-D Suzuki’s Matiss Karro sees his machine officially protested – ooh, the controversy!

18

“Oooooh, controversy!” So sang pint-sized pop pixie Prince on his hit song ‘Controversy’ and although the controversy he was singing about was a different controversy, he could well have been singing about the controversy surrounding round three of the 2009 Maxxis British MX championship at Brampton. The aforementioned controversy centres around the MX2 class where MVR-D Suzuki’s Latvian whipper-snapper Matiss Karro nails two commanding wins on the Cumbrian track that’s

tougher than a Carlisle barmaid.

So commanding are his wins – the first by over four seconds from KTM UK’s Jake Nicholls and the second by 10 seconds from the Reverend’s team-mate Stephen Sword – that there’s a suspicion that his engine could well be, er, a little on the large size. A protest is lodged by KTM UK, the Suzi is stripped and measured and all is found to be in order so the baby-faced Baltic Bullet gets his 50 points and – more importantly – gets to keep his trophy.

“That was a good race and I like the track,” says the typically sand-loving Latvian, the 2008 world junior champ. “I feel really good. I was ready when the gate dropped and my bike is so fast. It has been an awesome day.” Although Roger Magee’s KTM UK squad doesn’t get a man on the top of the podium it’s still a good day for the boys in orange with Swordy and Nicholls second and third overall with 3-2 and 2-3 cards. Graeme Irwin also shows

his potential with a mega charge through the field in the first moto from near last to fifth and briefly leads race two. And with Shaun Simpson sidelined with a broken leg it also means three-time champ Swordy gets his mitts on the series leader’s red plate. “I didn’t feel like I rode my best today – I got a little bit of arm-pump in the first race and I wasn’t using good lines,” says Swordy. “We made some changes to the suspension for the second moto and that made things a lot better. “Even though I didn’t win getting the points lead today was good for me and I know I can increase my lead in the series over the next few rounds because some of my favourite tracks are coming up.” Fourth overall on the day goes to PAR Homes Honda’s talented teenager Scott Elderfield ahead of DB Racing’s Neville

Bradshaw and another up-and-comer in the shape of UTAG Yamaha’s Mel Pocock. Martin Barr, Joe Dark, Irwin and Rickard Sandberg round out the top 10. “No-one likes a smart-arse,” my dad used to say before aiming a teeth-rattling thick ear in my direction but it was fairl easy to predict a Brad Anderson win in MX1 what with it being his home track. Brad’s done more laps of Brampton than I’ve had teeth-rattling thick ears off my dad and even though the track’s been reworked for the Maxxis round he puts in a pair of killer motos to card the second maximum of the day and stretch out his lead at the top of the MX1 standings. Good work Bradley! “It was a bit dodgy out there with backmarkers but we made it,” grins Brad. “I wanted to win here last year but I crashed while I was in the lead, hopefully I’ve got that sorted.”

Mark Chamberlain’s MVR-D Suzuki team was having a bit of a stellar season in 2009 and James Noble kept the momentum rolling nicely along with second overall. Third in the opener behind KRT Kawasaki’s Gareth Swanepoel, Noble goes one better second time out and gets to within a second of Brad at the flag. Third overall goes to Jason Dougan who survives an attack of arm-pump in the opener to card 4-4. Defending champ Billy MacKenzie has another tough day. A first corner crash in the opening moto sees the CAS Honda somersaulting through the air but he gets straight back on it and salvages 10th before crossing the line third second time out which earns him fourth overall. Behind Billy it’s Kiwi Scotty Columb who leads home Swanepoel, Samsung Yamaha’s Mark ‘Moe’ Jones, Zach Osborne, Bry MacKenzie and Kristian Whatley.

Series standings MX1

Story

so far…

It’s home wins for Martin Barr and Graeme Irwin while Lewis Hall dominates MXY2 in Desertmartin… Buildbase Honda team-mates Graeme Irwin and Martin Barr produced dominant performances to top the MX1 and MX2 podiums at round five of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship supported by Pro Clean at Desertmartin. The two Irish riders went into their home round of the series determined to win and both achieved their goals in the deep sand of one of the UK’s premier circuits. After topping qualifying by over two-anda-half seconds, Irwin holeshot the opening MX1 moto and led all the way to the flag for a four-second victory. Race two was a repeat performance and if anything he looked even smoother as he won by seven seconds and extended his series lead to 39 points with three rounds to go. Two-time champion Brad Anderson (Verde Sports Racing KTM) came home

second with a 4-2 card from Gert Krestinov (Phoenix Tools Honda Racing) who was third both times out. Barr went into Desertmartin in third in the championship chase but has now moved up a position after racing to first and secondplaced finishes – although he was forced to dig deep after crashing in moto two. Championship leader Ben Watson (Hitachi KTM UK) ran 3-1 for second overall, three points ahead of Micky Eccles (Putoline Planet Suspension Husqvarna) who carded a career-best 2-3. In the MXY2 class Lewis Hall (Team Green Kawasaki) raced to a double win from Tom Grimshaw (HCR Putoline Apico Yamaha) who carded 2-4 and Keenan Hird (Craigs Kawasaki) who ran 5-2. With two rounds in this series to go Hird leads Hall by 13 points with Grimshaw a further three points adrift.
